Elon Musk’s ‘Department of Government Efficiency’ has a rough first week
About a month after Donald Trump won a second term, as Republican hype surrounding the so-called Department of Government Efficiency reached absurd levels, Punchbowl News’ Jake Sherman, an MSNBC contributor, spoke to a senior GOP aide with low expectations.
Referring to Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, then the chairs of the fake “department,” the congressional staffer said: “Two people who know nothing about how the government works pretending they can cut a trillion dollars, both with decent pulpits to preach from, and the ear of an unpredictable president? Disaster.”
Seven weeks later, the relevance of that prediction continues to linger — because things could be better in DOGE Land.
As this week got underway, for example, Ramaswamy resigned from the advisory panel, and according to multiple reports, his colleagues weren’t exactly sad to see him leave. A few days later, as The Wall Street Journal reported, the fake “department” suffered another major departure.
The top lawyer at Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency said he is leaving just days after President Trump’s return to the White House. Bill McGinley, whom Trump appointed as DOGE’s legal counsel in December, is in discussions with several large companies to return to the private sector.
The lawyer confirmed his departure in an interview with the Journal, emphasizing that he remains supportive of the president and his agenda.
If McGinley’s name sounds at all familiar, it’s because Trump announced in December that the Republican lawyer would serve as the next White House counsel. Four weeks later, for reasons that were not disclosed to the public, Trump changed his mind, demoted McGinley and dispatched him to the DOGE endeavor — which McGinley is now leaving, just days after the new president’s inauguration.
Making matters worse, it’s not the only challenge facing the initiative:
- DOGE is the target of multiple lawsuits that allege the endeavor is failing to comply with disclosure and hiring laws that apply to all advisory panels.
- The so-called department is facing new questions as to why it was created in such a way that it’s not subject to Freedom of Information Act requests.
- While the stated purpose of the project was to identify wasteful spending, Musk has already walked back Trump’s unrealistic campaign promises, and the president’s executive order creating DOGE said its purpose will be to “implement the President’s DOGE Agenda, by modernizing Federal technology and software to maximize governmental efficiency and productivity,” suggesting that the reason for the endeavor’s existence has already been overhauled.
Meanwhile, the “department” that was ostensibly created to address waste and fraud in federal spending is also already experiencing mission creep, reportedly contacting the U.S. Marshals Service this week to express concern about the speed with which pardoned Jan. 6 criminals were being released from detention.
In case that weren’t quite enough, a Wired magazine report noted that DOGE, at an institutional level, has been parked inside the executive branch by reorganizing and renaming an existing entity, the U.S. Digital Service, as the U.S. DOGE Service. That might not seem especially notable, but the Wired article added that this is a move “that will give centibillionaire Elon Musk and his allies seemingly unprecedented insight across the government, and access to troves of federal data.”
In other words, as the first week of Trump’s second term gets underway, the not-quite-real Department of Government Efficiency is both struggling and expanding its remit — which is far from an ideal scenario in an initiative clouded by secrecy.
The “disaster” prediction from December might’ve understated the case.
Elon Musk’s latest venture, the ‘Department of Government Efficiency,’ has had a rough first week as reports of chaos and confusion emerge from within the newly established agency. The department, created by Musk with the goal of streamlining government processes and increasing efficiency, has faced criticism for its lack of organization and unclear objectives. Employees have reportedly been struggling to understand their roles and responsibilities, leading to a series of miscommunications and delays in projects.
In addition, there have been concerns raised about the department’s transparency and accountability, with some accusing Musk of creating a secretive and opaque organization that operates outside of traditional government oversight.
Despite these challenges, Musk remains optimistic about the future of the ‘Department of Government Efficiency’ and has vowed to address the issues that have arisen during its first week of operation. Only time will tell if Musk’s ambitious vision for a more efficient government can be realized, or if the department will continue to face obstacles in its path to success.

Elon Musk’s Maybe-Club and Bret Baier’s $25 Million Mansion Sale Are Fueling the Hamptons-ification of DC
Now that a second Donald Trump presidency has dawned, the rich and wannabe-famous have realized that DC might just be the place to be, if they’re hoping to get The Donald’s ear and champion their causes over the next four years. The problem is, they all have to sleep somewhere.
Due to the mega-MAGA influx of new personnel and those who want to influence them hitting the area, there’s high demand for high-end real estate, the New York Times reports. “We’ve really been overwhelmed by the wealth factor that has come to Washington since the election,” TTR Sotheby’s International Realty executive vice president Jim Bell told the Times, noting that some agents have taken to cold-calling past clients with homes that might fit the bill and asking them to name their price.
Jonathan Taylor, a founder and managing partner at the same firm, told the paper that “there are a lot of very wealthy people looking for a seat at the table.”
Carlyle Group founder David Rubenstein, founder of the private equity firm the Carlyle Group, pointed out that housing in the government town is more affordable than in other meccas for the uber-rich. “If you want to buy a home in New York or Southampton, a really good house, it could cost $100 million to $150 million,” he told the Times. “You can’t spend $25 million in Washington even if you try.”
Chairman and CEO of Cantor Fitzgerald turned Commerce Secretary pick Howard Lutnick, however, did try—and succeeded. Lutnick recently closed on a new home, paying $25 million for a mansion previously owned by Fox News anchor Bret Baier. The 16,250-square-foot estate was inspired by a French Chateau and features a 56-foot heated pool and its own putting green, among other amenities. Baier initially listed the home at $31.9 million in October 2023, but even coming down from the sticker price, the all-cash transaction set a new record for the most expensive real estate transaction in DC’s history.
Sotheby’s agent Daniel Heider, who represented the listing, told the Washingtonian, “I’m currently in the midst of selling more real estate than I’ve ever sold in a short period in my career. It’s not a Trump bump. It’s a Trump surge.”
Amazon’s Jeff Bezos got in the door early and snapped up real estate during Trump’s first term. Bezos bought the 27,000-square-foot space formerly housing the Textile Museum for $23 million in 2016. Rumor has it that Elon Musk is eyeing DC property himself, with Eater DC reporting that he’s mulling a bid on the 220-room Line Hotel to create a private club, a little Musk-a-Lago. The property goes to public auction on Thursday. (A spokesperson for Musk did not respond to the Times or VF.)
So, what to do if you have a nice place, no strong need to be in DC specifically, and are disgusted by the new guys in town, who aren’t even bothering to deny whether they were throwing up Nazi salutes while installing a new president?
Consider throwing a little gold paint on it, taking the buyout, and getting the hell out while you still can. Another upside: You won’t have to witness whatever the eyeball-burning hell Melania decides to do with the Christmas trees this time around.
Elon Musk’s Maybe-Club and Bret Baier’s $25 Million Mansion Sale Are Fueling the Hamptons-ification of DCThe Hamptons, known for its luxurious homes, high-profile residents, and exclusive social scene, has long been a symbol of wealth and power on the East Coast. But now, it seems that the Hamptons lifestyle is making its way to the nation’s capital.
With Elon Musk’s recent announcement of his plans to open a private club in Washington, DC, and Fox News anchor Bret Baier’s $25 million mansion sale in the city’s upscale Kalorama neighborhood, it’s clear that the influence of the Hamptons is spreading beyond Long Island.
Musk’s club, which he described as a “maybe-club” in a recent tweet, is rumored to be a members-only space for the elite to network and socialize. Meanwhile, Baier’s massive mansion sale is just the latest example of the growing trend of ultra-luxury real estate in the DC area.
As more billionaires and celebrities flock to DC, it’s clear that the city is becoming a playground for the rich and famous. And with this influx of wealth and glamour, it’s no surprise that the Hamptons-ification of DC is well underway.
So get ready for more exclusive clubs, extravagant mansions, and star-studded events in the nation’s capital. The Hamptons may be hundreds of miles away, but its influence is closer than ever.

Elon Musk’s Nazi salute controversy reveals a collapse in American morality
Since Donald Trump’s rise to power, some liberals have developed a bad habit of seeing secret Nazi imagery everywhere on the right.
Be it Laura Ingraham allegedly sieg-heiling at the 2016 Republican National Convention, a Justice Brett Kavanaugh clerk being called a covert white supremacist in 2018 because of her resting hand position, or concerns that the furniture at a 2021 conservative conference was arranged in the shape of a Nazi division’s emblem, these charges almost always end up looking kind of absurd.
So when I say that Elon Musk gave a Nazi salute at Trump’s inauguration on Monday, I am doing so only because I can see no other plausible interpretation of his gesture.
I watched the footage from as many angles as I could find. He stuck his arm straight out, palm down, and pointed it toward the crowd in a gesture of tribute. He put his hand on his heart first, a variant of the Adolf Hitler salute popularized in American History X — a critical film about neo-Nazism that some on the far-right have reclaimed as a celebration. And he did it twice.
If that’s what you saw — well, I’m with you. And it’s what neo-Nazis themselves saw; Nick Fuentes, the Hitler admirer who dined with Trump in 2022, described Musk’s gesture as “a straight-up sieg heil, like loving Hitler energy.”
But maybe you saw things differently.
Maybe, like the Washington Post’s Megan McArdle, you are inclined to give Musk the benefit of the doubt — suggesting that he was merely trying to mime his heart going out to the crowd. Maybe you’re skeptical of viral video clips on principle, a reasonable attitude given how easy they are to edit deceptively. Maybe you think we ultimately can’t know what’s in someone’s heart, and it’s not worth trying to guess — especially given Musk’s dismissal of the charges.
But whatever you believe was in Musk’s heart on Monday, you can see why many of us would be leery of giving him the benefit of the doubt.
Musk has a long and extensive track record of extreme-right politics, flirtations with antisemitism, and juvenile trolling. This assessment does not hinge entirely on one gesture but on the totality of his public behavior. Just a few years ago, someone this radical wouldn’t be anywhere near a presidential inauguration.
Musk’s presence there, and his ability to avoid even a hint of contrition for doing something that emboldens America’s neo-Nazis, is a sign of a deeper rot.
Since Trump has risen to power, Americans’ shared notion of public morals — the idea that there are certain standards for conduct that shouldn’t be transgressed — have been blown to bits. Some of those standards, like strong prohibitions on doing anything that even resembles an endorsement of Nazism, are some of our most important bulwarks against a return to the worst political moments in modern humanity’s long collective history.
And that, more than anything else, is why what Musk did — both from that stage and long before — matters. Even if leaders and elites have abandoned any pretensions to a moral code, we as citizens still need to insist on it. Instead, even institutions created to banish bigotry and contain cruelty are bending the knee.
We don’t need a Hitler salute to know who Elon Musk is
It’s true that Elon Musk has done some things, like visiting Auschwitz, that one wouldn’t expect from someone who would heil Hitler in public. But when you look at his public record in totality, the pattern is unmistakable — and disturbing.
After purchasing Twitter in 2022, Musk personally intervened to restore Fuentes and others like him, who had been banned by the platform’s previous owners. Two 2023 data analyses found that the amount of antisemitic content on Twitter, now X, doubled after Musk’s purchase. A 2024 NBC investigation reported that Musk’s choices allowed antisemitism and neo-Nazism to “flourish” on the platform, identifying hundreds of neo-Nazi accounts gaining in influence under Musk’s new policies.
While his initial justification was that these views are easier to combat when debated publicly, it quickly became clear that he actually agreed with some of what they had to say.
The most infamous example came when Musk replied approvingly to a nakedly antisemitic tweet. The original poster accused Jews of pushing “dialectical hatred against whites,” adding that he was “deeply disinterested in giving the tiniest shit now about western Jewish populations coming to the disturbing realization that those hordes of minorities that support flooding their country don’t exactly like them too much.”
Musk told this person that “you have said the actual truth.” He then went on to attack the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), a Jewish anti-hate group, for “unjustly attack[ing] the majority of the West.” He ultimately apologized and visited Auschwitz to demonstrate that he had learned.
Yet there are plenty of other examples afterward of Musk interacting with or promoting antisemitic or neo-Nazi content.
He, for example, amplified a post accusing Jews of supporting censorship. He praised two separate Tucker Carlson interviews with troubling content — one featuring a Hitler apologist and the other airing conspiracy theories about Israeli control over US foreign policy. And he once accused the billionaire Holocaust survivor George Soros of “hating humanity,” comparing Soros to Magneto — the Jewish X-Men villain whose hatred of humanity arose from his experience in a death camp.
In the past few weeks, Musk has used his platform on X to repeatedly and loudly advance Germany’s far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party. The AfD is extreme even by the standards of the European far-right: Some of its members tried to storm the German parliament in 2020, January 6-style, while a former AfD member of parliament was arrested in 2022 for plotting an actual coup. The party is virulently opposed to immigration; its leader Alice Weidel recently called for “remigration” — a mass deportation campaign that could potentially target even legal residents of minority backgrounds. Another leading party figure, Björn Höcke, has called for an end to German guilt over Nazism and used a Nazi slogan in one of his speeches.
The International Auschwitz Committee, a German anti-hate group founded by Holocaust survivors, has repeatedly warned about the party’s dangers.
“With every year of its existence, the AfD has become increasingly cynical and extreme. As a result, it has contributed to a huge level of radicalisation in language and in the extreme far right as a whole in Germany,” Christoph Heubner, the committee’s executive vice president, said in a 2023 press release. “MPs and representatives of the AfD repeatedly trigger disconcerting memories in the survivors of the German concentration and extermination camps with their speeches and public performances.”
So do the many examples of Musk supporting neo-Nazis and promoting their ideas make him a dyed-in-the-wool Nazi, one who simply revealed his true colors at Trump’s inauguration? We can’t tell what’s in his heart, of course, but I think there’s a likely explanation.
We know that Elon Musk has genuinely far-right politics and that he marinades in an online information environment rife with conspiracy theories. We also know that he delights in trolling.
He is willing to pursue these interests even in ways that damage his business. Think about X’s plummeting ad revenues after Musk platformed extremists. Or how he triggered an SEC lawsuit after vowing to take Tesla private at $420 a share (weed jokes, they’re hilarious). Or how, in the midst of a fight with Twitter’s corporate landlord, he repainted the sign to read “Titter” (boob jokes, they’re hilarious).
Elon Musk is many things: a brilliant entrepreneur, the world’s richest man, and a genuinely dangerous political extremist. But he also has a juvenile sense of humor and an adolescent love of transgressing against liberal America’s taboos. He is human South Park.
Such a person could sincerely hold Nazi beliefs. But he could just as easily find joy in making an obvious Nazi gesture on a national stage and then denying it, knowing full well that there would be no serious cost to his actions.
A Thursday morning tweet containing a series of Nazi puns relating to the salute controversy — “Don’t say Hess to Nazi accusations,” “Some people will Goebbels anything down” — makes this all too easy to imagine.
Musk, manners, and the execrable “vibe shift”
It used to be that something like what Musk pulled — a gesture that perfectly mimicked a Nazi salute, intentionally or not — would necessitate some kind of apology. Something along the lines of “Of course I didn’t mean to heil Hitler, and I’m sorry for the hurt this caused to the victims of Nazism and their descendants.”
That’s not what Musk has done. Since Monday, he has gone on the offensive — calling the media propagandists and trying to shift to a debate over liberals’ position on Israel. There’s no contrition, no sense of embarrassment: just utter and complete shamelessness.
This is, of course, one of the defining traits of the Trump era of politics. But what’s striking is that, since Trump’s reelection, the institutions that are supposed to push back on this have kissed the ring.
Take the ADL, which had previously done so much to expose the rise of extremism after Musk’s purchase of Twitter and called him out for flirtations with white supremacy. It got so heated that Musk blamed the ADL directly for X’s loss in revenue and repeatedly threatened to sue them.
The ADL has retained a very low tolerance for public displays of antisemitism since then. After the October 7, 2023, attacks on Israel, it has been quite clearly overzealous in that regard, pursuing pro-Palestinian college students for behavior far less troubling (like handing out anti-Zionist flyers) than what Musk just did.
Yet after the inauguration, the group issued a statement basically giving Musk a hall pass for performing “an awkward gesture.” It did so, in large part, because we are in the midst of “a new beginning” for American politics in which “all sides should give one another a bit of grace.”
Even though the ADL found some spine on Thursday and criticized Musk for the Nazi jokes, the initial statement was capitulation of a particularly notable kind. It was a response to the much-heralded “vibe shift,” a sense that culture has shifted in Trump’s direction after his victory and that the rest of society needs to accommodate his faction. That it’s now realized it went too far, and is going after him for the much lesser offense of making Nazi leaders’ names into puns, does not diminish the severity of its original mistake.
You can see this mindset at work in another exchange about Musk. When Congress member Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez accused Musk of doing a “Nazi salute,” leading right-wing activist Chris Rufo responded by saying that the time for such allegations is over.
“They still think if they shout ‘racist’ and ‘Nazi’ loud enough, the entire society will bend to their narcissism and manipulation. No. It’s not 2020 anymore,” he said.
Both the ADL and Rufo, in very different ways, are showing why we shouldn’t give Musk’s boorish behavior a pass.
The truth is that Musk has a public record of sympathy for odious views, and has shown zero contrition about making a gesture that looked exactly like a Nazi salute. Criticizing him for it is not uncivil or impolite; it is a way to assert that there are real moral standards, certain lines that shouldn’t be crossed by people in positions of power.
The Trump era “vibe shift” isn’t merely a move to the right. It’s a move away from accountability and toward a culture where people get away with meanness, cruelty, and gratuitous insults against the vulnerable. As an anonymous banker put it: “We can say ‘retard’ and ‘pussy’ without the fear of getting cancelled . . . it’s a new dawn.”
At moments like these, collectively insisting on standards is all the more important. One of those standards is that you should not be able to get away with performing a Nazi gesture, intentionally or not, without apologizing like you mean it. Another is that someone with Musk’s record of promoting far-right ideas and approvingly conversing with neo-Nazis should never have been on the inaugural stage to begin with. This is one of the bulwarks we have, as a society, to prevent honest-to-goodness Nazism from reentering the zone of political acceptability.
Yet Musk and Trump have made blurring those moral lines part of their life’s work. I fear we are all about to suffer the consequences — to live in a world where it becomes even more acceptable to openly perform nastiness and extremism. We may enter the world prophesied by philosopher Richard Rorty in 1998, where a far-right backlash brings “all the sadism” we once considered “unacceptable” in public life “flooding back.”
If that indeed comes to pass, the future of American politics is one in which Musk’s ugly display on Monday ends up looking like a dance recital.
Recently, Tesla CEO Elon Musk found himself in hot water after a video surfaced of him making a Nazi salute during a conference call. The controversial gesture has sparked outrage and condemnation from many, with critics pointing out that such actions are not only offensive but also indicative of a larger problem in American society.Musk’s behavior has raised questions about his judgment and character, with some calling for him to step down from his position at Tesla. The incident has also reignited discussions about the rise of extremism and hate speech in the United States, as well as the need for greater accountability among public figures.
The fact that someone as influential and successful as Musk would engage in such a gesture is troubling, to say the least. It serves as a stark reminder of the erosion of moral values in American society and the normalization of hateful ideologies.
In a time when political polarization and social division are at an all-time high, it is more important than ever for individuals in positions of power to lead by example and promote inclusivity, tolerance, and respect. Musk’s actions have only further highlighted the urgent need for a collective reassessment of our values and priorities as a nation.
Ultimately, the controversy surrounding Elon Musk’s Nazi salute serves as a wake-up call for all Americans to reflect on the state of our morality and to strive for a more compassionate and just society. It is a reminder that we must actively work to combat hate and intolerance in all its forms, lest we continue down a dangerous path towards further division and discord.

-
Elon Musk faces mounting criticism from the gaming community, including Twitch streamer Asmongold, after controversial claims about his gaming prowess, leaked private messages, and actions that questioned his authenticity and credibility.
Elon Musk’s credibility as a self-proclaimed world-class gamer is under scrutiny after he clashed with popular Twitch streamer Asmongold, who challenged him to prove his skills in exchange for streaming exclusively on X for a year.
Instead of seizing the opportunity to lure Asmongold’s 3.6 million followers to his platform, Musk leaked private messages and stripped the streamer of his verification badge, which allows ad revenue sharing.
The move comes as Musk continues efforts to attract Twitch creators to X, including discrediting Amazon’s platform over adult content—shortly before permitting it on X.
“Asmon behaves like a maverick ‘independent’, but in reality has to ask his boss for permission before he can do anything. He is not his own man,” Musk posted in a series of tweets that included the leaked messages. Musk’s posts were slapped with Community Notes for spreading disinformation.
The X owner stopped short of completely deactivating the account, a tactic the self-described “free speech absolutist” has employed on occasion.
Asmongold’s checkmark was also later restored with no explanation. Fortune reached out to Musk on his platform for comment, and will update with any statement from the owner.
Musk’s gaming claims spark credibility concerns
Musk’s alleged ranking as a top-tier player in games like Diablo IV or Path of Exile 2—or the possibility he paid others to boost his status—may seem trivial for a figure hailed as the most influential innovator of his generation.
However, the controversy strikes at his credibility. If Musk, who once fought to be named a Tesla co-founder, isn’t forthcoming about something as minor as gaming, it raises questions about his transparency on more significant matters.
Criticism intensified after Musk, who has often touted his gaming prowess on podcasts like Lex Fridman and Joe Rogan, hosted a livestream earlier this month that inadvertently exposed his lack of expertise at the elite level he claimed.
Had Musk framed himself as a casual gamer rather than a self-proclaimed king, the community might have forgiven a boosted account. Instead, his grandiose claims have invited deeper scrutiny.
“It was stupid for him to have done this. The fact is people respect authenticity more than they respect success,” Asmongold said this week. “It just makes him look like an insecure a–hole.”
Musk faces backlash from gamer community
Going after a Twitch streamer like Asmongold to silence him earned Musk a roasting by a community that once viewed him as one of their own.
“This is a legendary meltdown, abuse of his power & exactly what the left does,” wrote The Quartering.
The backlash against Musk over his gaming claims is surprising, given gamers’ history of instinctively supporting his anti-establishment stance. Long before Musk openly criticized diversity and political correctness, gamers rebelled against similar themes being imposed on their medium, as seen with titles like Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
Rooted in nerd culture, gamers tend to reject authority figures who scorned them, valuing shared passion over status.
“I’m a huge fan of Elon Musk—but this is embarrassing and very silly,” Asmongold said in his video from Monday. “It makes him look bad and it’s for absolutely no reason, it’s of no consequence and it achieves no goal.”

Elon Musk, the billionaire CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has found himself embroiled in a gaming scandal that seems to be getting more scandalous by the day. It all started when popular Twitch streamer Asmongold, known for his World of Warcraft streams, publicly accused Musk of using his influence to manipulate the gaming industry.Asmongold claimed that Musk, who recently purchased the popular gaming company X, was pressuring him to promote X games on his stream in exchange for money and other perks. Asmongold refused, citing ethical concerns and a desire to maintain his integrity as a streamer.
However, the situation took a darker turn when it was revealed that the owner of X had allegedly attempted to silence Asmongold by threatening legal action if he continued to speak out against Musk. This move has sparked outrage among the gaming community, with many accusing X of trying to suppress dissent and control the narrative surrounding their games.
Asmongold has vowed to continue speaking out against what he sees as unethical behavior in the gaming industry, and has called on his fans to support him in his fight against corporate censorship. The scandal has only served to further tarnish Musk’s reputation in the gaming community, and it remains to be seen how he will address these allegations in the coming days.

ADL faces backlash for defending Elon Musk’s raised-arm gesture | Politics News
Washington, DC – After Elon Musk made an apparent Nazi salute at an inauguration rally for United States President Donald Trump, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) rushed to defend the SpaceX founder.
The self-described anti-Semitism watchdog and “leading anti-hate organization in the world” dismissed Musk’s raised arm as “an awkward gesture in a moment of enthusiasm” in a social media post on Monday.
Months earlier, however, Jonathan Greenblatt, the head of the staunchly pro-Israel ADL, compared the Palestinian keffiyeh to the Nazi swastika.
Activists say the contrast between the ADL’s hurried defence of Musk and its efforts to demonise Palestinians and their supporters shows that the group is more focused on silencing voices critical of Israel than it is on fighting anti-Semitism.
“The ADL is being crystal clear about where it stands,” said Beth Miller, political director at Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP).
“They have made it as clear as possible that they are not a reputable source of information when it comes to anti-Semitism. They are not actually prioritising the protection of Jewish communities at all.”
Miller called the ADL a “hateful group” dedicated to smearing Palestinian rights advocates.
For years, the ADL has been a go-to NGO for government agencies and the corporate world when it comes to anti-Semitism, hate crimes and broader civil rights issues.
The group has hosted top Israeli and US politicians, FBI directors, celebrities and businesspeople.
The group’s annual “audit” of anti-Semitic incidents in the US — which last year included “certain expressions of opposition to Zionism, as well as support for resistance against Israel” — often gets cited by government agencies and legislation.
Still, Palestinian rights supporters and US-based Muslim groups have long sounded the alarm about the ADL and its stalwart support for Israel.
In recent years, the group has come under increased criticism for the perception that it has gone soft on right-wing figures accused of bigotry, as long as they support Israel.
Those accusations escalated after Musk’s gesture on Monday.
“Just to be clear, you are defending a Heil Hitler salute that was performed and repeated for emphasis and clarity,” progressive Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez wrote on social media in response to the ADL’s defence of Musk.
“People can officially stop listening to you as any sort of reputable source of information now.”
Just to be clear, you are defending a Heil Hitler salute that was performed and repeated for emphasis and clarity.
People can officially stop listening to you as any sort of reputable source of information now. You work for them. Thank you for making that crystal clear to all. https://t.co/0gLdMCU3UV

Musk’s gesture
While speaking at the Capital One Arena following Trump’s inauguration, Musk put his hand to his chest, then swiftly raised his arm as he thanked the crowd for electing the Republican president.
The 53-year-old billionaire then turned around and did it again.
His motion resembled the Nazi gesture — known as the “Sieg Heil”, German for “hail victory” — which has roots in an ancient Roman salute.
“My heart goes out to you. It is thanks to you that the future of civilisation is assured,” Musk said.
While it is not uncommon for politicians to extend their arms to greet an audience, the combination of Musk’s rhetoric about “civilisation” and the repeated gesture raised many eyebrows.
Ruth Ben-Ghiat, a history professor at New York University who writes about fascism and authoritarianism, said in a social media post that Musk’s gesture was “a Nazi salute — and a very belligerent one too”.
Musk has not provided a detailed explanation of what happened, but he did brush off the accusations, saying that his critics “need better dirty tricks”.
“The ‘everyone is Hitler’ attack is sooo tired,” Musk wrote on X. He later shared a post showing Democratic politicians with their arms raised and dismissed legacy media as “pure propaganda”.
But Matan Arad-Neeman, a spokesperson for IfNotNow, a Jewish progressive group, rejected Musk’s apparent denial.
“I’m descended from Holocaust survivors, and I know a Nazi salute when I see one, and that was absolutely what Elon Musk was doing,” Arad-Neeman told Al Jazeera.
He added that the ADL’s defence of Musk was “obscene”. He juxtaposed the group’s response with its reaction to antiwar protesters pushing for a ceasefire in Gaza, where Israel has pursued a devastating military campaign since 2023.
“It’s not surprising — although it is shameful — that the ADL has spent recent years focusing their attention on egging on a crackdown on protesters for Palestinian human rights and antiwar protesters,” Arad-Neeman said.
ADL-Musk feud
The ADL’s backing of Musk would have been unthinkable less than a year and a half ago, when the billionaire entrepreneur threatened to sue the pro-Israel group over allegations that it was preventing companies from advertising on X after he acquired the platform.
Musk’s attacks, which the ADL described as “dangerous and deeply irresponsible”, were also perceived by critics as anti-Semitic. Some criticised Musk for blaming a Jewish group for his new company’s shortcomings.
But weeks after accusing X of “elevating” anti-Semites, the ADL welcomed what it called the platform’s “intent” to address anti-Semitism.
In October 2023, Greenblatt described Musk as an “amazing entrepreneur and extraordinary innovator”, positively comparing him with the pioneering industrialist Henry Ford, who is widely believed to have espoused anti-Semitic views.
Even after Musk and the ADL appeared to bury the hatchet, the X owner responded to a post accusing Jewish communities of promoting “dialectical hatred” against white people by writing: “You have said the actual truth”.
Musk visited Israel in November of that year, weeks into its war on Gaza, and met with the country’s leaders.
Tesla and SpaceX CEO Musk gestures during the inaugural parade inside Capital One Arena in Washington, DC, on January 20 [Angela Weiss/AFP] Arad-Neeman said bigots should not be able to “wave away their anti-Semitism” by saying that they support Israel.
“It’s unacceptable,” he told Al Jazeera. “It is offensive to the vast majority of American Jews who are terrified by people like the Proud Boys, by people like Elon Musk, by people like Donald Trump who cosy up to white supremacists and fascists.”
Besides his comments on the Jewish people, Musk has voiced support for far-right groups across the world.
Last month, he sparked outrage when he said only Germany’s far-right party, the AfD, could save the country.
Musk has also taken up the cause of the British anti-Muslim campaigner Tommy Robinson, who is in jail for contempt of court as part of a libel case. A court found that Robinson had falsely accused a Syrian refugee schoolboy of attacking “young English girls”.
The ADL recently denounced Robinson, whose legal name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, as an “anti-Muslim bigot”.
‘Censoring our speech’
Abed Ayoub, the executive director at the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC), said he wished the ADL would extend the same careful approach and benefit of the doubt it offered Musk to members of Arab and Muslim communities.
“This organisation has a history of censoring our speech and going after our speech and our freedom of expression, and it has made life difficult for many Arabs, Palestinians, Muslims and our supporters in this country,” Ayoub told Al Jazeera.
The ADL opposed a proposed mosque in New York in 2010 because it was close to the site of the 9/11 attacks at the World Trade Center, siding with far-right and Islamophobic groups.
The group has admitted more than a decade later that its position on the mosque was “wrong”.
More recently, the ADL has accused protesters supporting Palestinian rights — including left-wing Jewish groups — of promoting anti-Semitism.
Earlier this month, the ADL featured on its website a Jewish insider story slamming CBS News for interviewing Josh Paul and Hala Rharrit, two former US officials who quit their government jobs as a protest against Washington’s support for Israel’s war on Gaza.
The article emphasised a vague connection that Paul and Rharrit have with the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a civil rights group.
Last year, Greenblatt slammed members of then-President Joe Biden’s administration for meeting with Osama Siblani, the publisher of the Michigan-based Arab American News, over what he called “sympathy” for Hezbollah and Hamas.
The ADL has also been an uncompromising supporter of Israel’s war on Gaza, which rights groups and United Nations advocates have described as a genocide.
Ayoub said it is easy to get behind the ADL’s “mission on paper”: to fight hatred and bigotry. But more people are becoming aware of the group’s actual positions, he added.
“We’re starting to see a crack in their support, and we’re starting to see people call them out, especially on things like defending Elon Musk at the speed at which they did,” Ayoub told Al Jazeera.
The ADL did not respond to Al Jazeera’s request for comment by the time of publication.
On Tuesday, Bend the Arc, a progressive Jewish group, started circulating a petition calling for the ADL to retract its defence of Musk.
“The ADL claims to be an expert on antisemitism,” the petition reads.
“They are quick to defame pro-Palestinian students, Black and brown elected officials, writers, and professors over accusations of antisemitism. But when the world’s wealthiest man performed a Nazi salute while the world watched, they came to his defense?”
The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) is facing backlash after defending Elon Musk’s recent raised-arm gesture during a Tesla event. The controversial gesture, which some have interpreted as a symbol of white supremacy, has sparked outrage and calls for accountability. Many critics argue that the ADL’s defense of Musk’s gesture is tone-deaf and undermines their credibility as a leading anti-hate organization. They believe that the gesture, which has been associated with the alt-right and white nationalist movements, should not be brushed off or excused.
In response to the backlash, the ADL has released a statement clarifying their position and reaffirming their commitment to fighting hate and bigotry in all forms. However, the damage has already been done, and many are questioning the organization’s judgment and integrity.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of holding individuals and organizations accountable for their actions, especially in today’s increasingly polarized and politically charged climate. It also highlights the complexities and challenges of navigating issues of race, identity, and symbolism in a society that is deeply divided.

Getting humans to Mars has long been an obsession for SpaceX CEO Elon Musk. On Monday, that project got a full endorsement from the newly sworn-in president.
During his inaugural address, President Donald Trump promised he would “pursue our manifest destiny into the stars, launching American astronauts who plant the Stars and Stripes on the planet Mars.”
Musk, standing just a few feet away, grinned widely and pumped his fists in the air.
The moment sharply illustrated the unusual partnership the billionaire tech titan, who has lucrative contracts with the federal government, has established with the incoming president.
The blossoming relationship was on full display throughout the inaugural ceremonies. Musk heaped praise on Trump during a rally shortly after the swearing-in, repeating Trump’s promise of a coming “golden age” for the country.
“It is thanks to you that the future of civilization is assured,” Musk told the crowd at Capital One Arena.
On his social media platform X, Musk posted his approval of Trump returning to power for a second term: “The Return of the King.”
During the inauguration inside the Capitol Rotunda, Musk was seated in a row that included other tech giants, including Google CEO Sundar Pichai and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. All were seated behind Trump’s wife, Melania, and children, though Musk was seated closest to Trump.
Shortly after Trump’s youngest son, Barron, arrived at his seat in the second row, he turned and shook hands with Musk, who was visible in the televised shot of the podium throughout much of the proceedings. The treatment follows a hearty embrace by Trump of Musk, the Tesla owner and world’s wealthiest person.
Musk contributed roughly $200 million to America PAC, a super political action committee that worked to organize Trump support last fall.
The proximity of so many of the world’s wealthiest people to Trump’s incoming government led former President Joe Biden to warn of a burgeoning U.S. oligarchy of tech billionaires.
Among the projects Trump has assigned Musk is to work with former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy on an effort known as the Department of Government Efficiency. The mandate of the advisory group, which operates outside the formal government, is to slash federal bureaucracy, regulations and spending, a target Musk set last year at $2 trillion, roughly the size of the deficit.
Cuts of that scale would likely require targeting entitlement programs such as Social Security and Medicare, as well as laying off hundreds of thousands of federal employees. Though still bullish on the prospect for deep cuts, Musk noted during a public forum earlier this month that the $2 trillion target might be difficult to achieve.
“I think if you try for $2 trillion, I think we can get to 1 (trillion),” Musk said during a question-and-answer session on X with pollster Mark Penn.
Since the election, Musk has been a regular visitor to Trump’s resort in Palm Beach, Florida, and has been part of calls and meetings with prospects for Cabinet positions and world leaders.
It hasn’t all been rosy. There has been some early tension between Musk and influential Trump supporters, including former campaign adviser and conservative podcaster Steve Bannon, over Musk’s support for immigration visas that bring skilled foreign workers to the U.S.
Though Trump appears to have sided with Musk and others in the tech industry, Bannon criticized the program as at odds with the administration’s “America first” mantra. In what could signal a division within Trump’s base, Bannon vowed this month in an interview with an Italian newspaper to “have Elon Musk run out of here.”
Musk also stirred up some Republican lawmakers after he helped scuttle a bipartisan government funding proposal last month, in part by posting false claims on X, where he has over 200 million followers. The platform has largely abandoned guardrails against misinformation and has experienced a surge in conspiracy theories and bogus claims since Musk bought what was then Twitter nearly three years ago. That has raised concerns about how it could be used to manipulate public perception given its owner’s ties to the Trump administration.
During his rally speech later at the arena, Musk could hardly contain his enthusiasm about Trump’s second term.
“Man, I can’t wait,” he said. “This is going to be fantastic.”

Elon Musk’s first wife Justine reveals secret to his success: ‘Hard work and saying no a lot’
Billionaire businessman Elon Musk is set to join the Donald Trump-led US government this week — partnering with Vivek Ramaswamy on a project to slash the size of the federal government. There has also been renewed interest in his personal life and work ethics as the Tesla and SpaceX CEO becomes a permanent fixture in news headlines.
“I was married…I was married…to a man who became extremely successful. And as I watched him rise, I noticed two things. He worked very hard, much harder than your average bear. And he said no a lot,” his ex-wife Justine Musk reportedly said during a TedX talk in 2014.
Details about their messy divorce — outlined by Justine Musk in a 2008 essay — have also come under the spotlight ahead of the inauguration.
She had met the businessman at Queen’s University in Ontario and they eventually married in 2000. The couple tragically lost their first child to sudden infant death syndrome at the age of 10 weeks. They went on to have five more children through IVF — twins in 2004 followed by triplets in 2006. The loss of their son and the subsequent birth of five more children as well as Musk’s growing role in the business world had severely strained their relationship.
“This, and the vast economic imbalance between us, meant that in the months following our wedding, a certain dynamic began to take hold. Elon’s judgment overruled mine, and he was constantly remarking on the ways he found me lacking,” she wrote.
The Canadian author also recalled telling her then husband repeatedly that she was his wife and not an employee.
“If you were my employee…I would fire you,” she quoted him as responding just as often.
Elon Musk is now slated to lead the Department of Government Efficiency under Donald Trump. DOGE will be a nongovernmental task force assigned to find ways to fire federal workers, cut programs and slash federal regulations — all part of what the incoming POTUS calls his “Save America” agenda for a second term in the White House.

Elon Musk’s first wife Justine recently opened up about the key to his success in a candid interview. According to Justine, the billionaire entrepreneur’s secret to achieving greatness lies in two simple yet crucial factors: hard work and the ability to say no.In the interview, Justine shared how Elon’s relentless work ethic and drive to constantly push boundaries have been instrumental in his rise to the top. She emphasized that Elon is not afraid to put in the long hours and make sacrifices in order to achieve his goals, a trait that has set him apart from others in the industry.
Additionally, Justine highlighted Elon’s unwavering ability to say no to distractions and focus on what truly matters. She explained that Elon is very selective about where he invests his time and energy, choosing to prioritize projects that align with his vision and goals.
Overall, Justine’s insights shed light on the mindset and habits that have contributed to Elon Musk’s incredible success. By following in his footsteps and embracing hard work while learning to say no to distractions, aspiring entrepreneurs may be able to unlock their own potential for greatness.

Benzinga and Yahoo Finance LLC may earn commission or revenue on some items through the links below.
Whales have amassed almost 1 billion Dogecoin (CRYPTO: DOGE) within a span of 48 hours.
What Happened: Cryptocurrency trader and analyst Ali Martinez shared data on X indicating a substantial upswing in Dogecoin purchases. This buying frenzy was triggered by Musk’s recent remarks concerning the potential future slump of cryptocurrency prices.
The data shared by Martinez unveiled that Dogecoin whales have swiftly purchased over 470 million DOGE in the past two days. This surge in buying activity was concurrent with a 20% plunge in the price of Dogecoin, from $0.39620 to a low of $0.31648.
Don’t Miss:
Despite the intense accumulation, the data also revealed significant DOGE sales.
On Friday, cryptocurrency tracker Whale Alert reported two large Dogecoin transactions sent to the U.S.-based crypto exchange Coinbase, presumably for sale.
Elon Musk recently hinted on social media that the price of Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC), Dogecoin, and other cryptocurrencies could significantly plummet in the next two years if dollar inflation is resolved.
This statement was made in the context of his role in the U.S. Department of Government Efficiency, which is focused on reducing excessive government spending.
Dogecoin Whales are on the move once again, this time accumulating nearly 1 billion DOGE in just two days following Elon Musk’s latest crypto forecast. The billionaire Tesla CEO has been known to have a significant impact on the price and popularity of Dogecoin, often tweeting about the meme-inspired cryptocurrency to his millions of followers. In a recent tweet, Musk hinted at a potential collaboration between Dogecoin and Ethereum, causing a surge in interest and investment in the digital asset. This led to a flurry of activity from Dogecoin Whales, who are large holders of the cryptocurrency and have the power to influence its price movements.
According to data from WhaleStats, Dogecoin Whales accumulated a total of 972 million DOGE in just two days, signaling their bullish outlook on the future of the cryptocurrency. This influx of buying pressure has helped drive up the price of Dogecoin, which is now trading at its highest levels in months.
While some investors may be wary of the influence that Whales can have on the market, others see their accumulation as a positive sign of confidence in Dogecoin’s long-term potential. With Musk’s continued support and the backing of these influential holders, Dogecoin could be poised for even more gains in the coming weeks and months.

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Elon Musk wants to splashdown his SpaceX rockets in a much larger area in Hawaii waters and Hawaii residents are encouraged to weigh in.
The space exploration company is asking the FAA for a landing zone about 20 times larger than its current zone.
The proposal also seeks to increase the number of landings from 5 to 25 a year.
The new area would include waters used by fishermen and humpback whales. It’ll also encompass significant areas like Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument.
A FAA biological opinion from 2022 found the previous landing area would not cause harm to marine mammals or critical habitats.
Currently, the FAA is not conducting an environmental impact statement but public feedback could trigger a review.
The deadline to submit input is this Friday.
