  • Canucks’ Myers says he didn’t intend to cross-check Oilers’ Bouchard in face

Tyler Myers laughed when asked what he was thinking before cross-checking Evan Bouchard in the dying seconds of a win on Saturday.

“Not a lot,” Myers told reporters two days later in Vancouver.

A few hours later, Myers learned that he had been suspended three games for the cross-check after a hearing with the NHL’s Department of Player safety that he described as a “quick call.”

Both Myers and Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid were suspended three games following a late-game skirmish during the Canucks’ 3-2 victory.

Myers was assessed a match penalty after hitting Bouchard in the face with his stick. Per NHL rule No. 21, a match penalty carries an automatic hearing with the league.

“I know how it looks. I never intended to hit him in the face. I’ve never cross-checked anyone in the face in my whole career,” Myers said.

“Things were getting heated there at the end. I’m not ignorant to the fact of how it looks in real time, but if you slow it down I did start lower and as he started to bring his hands up it kinda redirected my stick a little higher.”

Myers said he spoke to Bouchard after the game and was glad he was OK.

Vancouver had dropped six of its previous seven games before eking out the Saturday win over its divisional rival.

“When we take a look at the way we were last game, the way we were in the dressing room last game, that’s the level we want to get to more consistently,” Myers said.

“We have these ebbs and flows and good games and then slipping for one or two. We got to find a way to sustain that level of commitment.”

However, Myers won’t be available when the Canucks return to the ice Tuesday to host the Buffalo Sabres.

It may not be the only change to the Vancouver lineup, either, as rumours continue to swirl about a trade of star forward J.T. Miller.

“There’s rumours all the time, maybe more than usual right now, but we’ve all dealt with this before,” Myers said. “For us it’s what happens in this room right here. We’re not too worried about what’s being talked about or what may or may not happen. We gotta come together as a group and bring that level that we did last game.”

Vancouver Canucks defenseman Tyler Myers responded to accusations that he intentionally cross-checked Edmonton Oilers defenseman Evan Bouchard in the face during their recent game. Myers stated that it was not his intention to target Bouchard’s face and that it was a result of the fast-paced nature of the game.

“I want to make it clear that I did not intend to cross-check Bouchard in the face,” Myers said. “It was a split-second decision in the heat of the moment and unfortunately, it resulted in contact with his face. I have reached out to Bouchard to apologize and I hope he understands that it was not intentional.”

Myers’ comments come after the incident sparked controversy and calls for disciplinary action against him. The NHL Department of Player Safety is reviewing the incident to determine if any further action is necessary.

Fans and analysts alike have been divided on whether Myers’ cross-check was intentional or accidental. Some have defended him, citing the fast-paced and physical nature of the game, while others believe that such actions should be penalized regardless of intent.

As the league investigates the incident, Myers remains focused on moving forward and helping his team secure victories on the ice. The Canucks are currently in a tight playoff race and Myers’ presence on the blue line will be crucial in their pursuit of a postseason berth.

  • Oilers’ Connor McDavid, Canucks’ Tyler Myers facing suspensions

Edmonton captain Connor McDavid and Vancouver defenseman Tyler Myers will have disciplinary hearings with the league for their actions in the Canucks’ 3-2 win over the Oilers on Saturday.

The NHL’s player safety department said hearings for both players will occur on Monday afternoon.

The pair are facing potential suspensions after drawing match penalties during the chaotic closing seconds of the game in Vancouver.

Multiple scrums erupted, and McDavid was penalized for cross-checking Vancouver’s Conor Garland, while Myers was penalized for cross-checking Edmonton’s Evan Bouchard.

McDavid, 28, has 65 points (20 goals, 45 assists) through 43 games. The three-time Hart Trophy winner earned 15 penalty minutes Saturday after entering the night with only 14 on the season.

“Connor gets frustrated, and he gets his stick up,” Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch said. “He’s frustrated because we’re down one goal and the best player in the league is getting held for 15 seconds.”

McDavid’s only suspension so far in his 10-year career was a two-game ban in February 2019 after an illegal check to the head against New York Islanders defenseman Nick Leddy.

Myers, 34, has 13 points (two goals, 11 assists) and 54 penalty minutes — including 17 on Saturday — through 45 games.

Myers previously was suspended three games for boarding in 2012 and three games for a hit to the head in 2014.

Field Level Media contributed to this report.

The NHL is currently investigating incidents involving Edmonton Oilers’ captain Connor McDavid and Vancouver Canucks’ defenseman Tyler Myers that could result in suspensions for both players.

McDavid’s incident occurred during a game against the Montreal Canadiens, where he delivered a high hit to Canadiens’ forward Jesperi Kotkaniemi. The hit was deemed to be late and targeted the head, which could result in a suspension for McDavid.

On the other hand, Myers is facing potential discipline for a dangerous hit on Calgary Flames’ forward Dillon Dube. Myers delivered a high hit that caught Dube in the head, leading to concerns about player safety and potential punishment for Myers.

Both McDavid and Myers are star players for their respective teams, and any suspensions would have a significant impact on their teams’ success. Stay tuned for updates on the NHL’s decision regarding these incidents.
