  • Lakers Rumors Roundup: Myles Turner update, searching for point guard

The trade deadline is one week away and the Lakers are still searching for the right answer to their problems.

Is that a center? A point guard? A third star? A combination of those three?

The front office will assess those questions in the coming days. While fans wait, let’s catch up on the latest rumors and reports.

    Myles on the move?

One of the names to emerge over the last week has been Myles Turner from the Pacers. Effectively, there was no report linking him to the Lakers other than people citing a history of links to the Lakers and Turner’s contract expiring at season’s end.

Naturally, since this didn’t have a starting point, there really isn’t much smoke to this one, at least according to longtime NBA reporter Marc Stein. In his latest Substack newsletter, Stein said the Pacers are only looking to move Turner if they get another starting center in return.

Yet the prevailing leaguewide sense, one week out from the trade buzzer, is that the Pacers do not want to trade Turner.

There is a strong belief among some league personnel that Indiana would need to see proposals that return a starting-level center to even consider the notion.

There are three-team machinations of deals that could potentially send the Pacers a starting center while landing the Lakers Turner, but those are complicated deals. And those are only possible if the Pacers want to move Turner, which remains to be seen.

    Center not the biggest need?

While there’s been plenty of talk about the center position — and more to come shortly — that isn’t the only position of need for the Lakers currently.

After trading away D’Angelo Russell, the Lakers have been short on playmakers on the roster. There has been a heavy reliance on Austin Reaves and LeBron James in the starting lineup while Gabe Vincent’s recent strong play has come at a critical time.

However, that might not be a sustainable formula moving forward, and the Lakers know it. According to Dan Woike of the LA Times in a recent extensive piece, the need for another ball handler is very apparent even to those in the locker room.

A center also is not the Lakers’ lone need. According to players inside the locker room discouraged from publicly discussing trade targets, there’s a desire for more playmaking, a need that’s become clear since the team traded D’Angelo Russell.

As much as the discussion has been about the need for center, perhaps equally important is the need to bring in another guard. With Vincent out, the Lakers have to turn to one of Shake Milton or Bronny James and, as fans saw on Tuesday against the Sixers, those are not good solutions.

    Looking for a big man

Ultimately, the Lakers’ trade deadline will probably be graded on whether they land another center. Although this has been a need for some time, Anthony Davis’ public remarks amplified the pressure on the front office to find an upgrade.

But the Lakers are not alone in searching for a center. As Woike also noted in his piece, the price for big men is high as the deadline nears.

In conversations with executives inside and outside of the organization, it’s become clear that the costs for starting-caliber NBA centers are high — particularly ones good enough to force the Lakers into the kind of seismic change that moving Davis to power forward and LeBron James to small forward would cause.

Trading for a big man just for the sake of bringing in another center isn’t going to solve any problems. Finding one that can both complement AD and also excel without him is quite the needle to thread.

But, Woike still reports that the team is looking for potential options.

The Lakers have been actively exploring adding a big man, though it’s not being done recklessly, according to NBA executives. Concerns about cost, fitting Redick’s preferred style of play and the ripples from moving Davis — namely playing James major minutes at small forward — are being weighed.

With Walker Kessler, the No. 1 target for most fans, seemingly unavailable at the deadline, it really thins the list of players who fit all the criteria the Lakers need.

The Lakers aren’t in a particularly easy situation to find upgrades, but they certainly are under a lot of pressure to do so. Sure sounds like fun!

The Los Angeles Lakers are not wasting any time in their quest to fill out their roster for the upcoming season. With the trade deadline looming, the Lakers are actively looking for a point guard to bolster their backcourt.

One of the names that has been circulating in Lakers rumors is Myles Turner of the Indiana Pacers. The 25-year-old center is known for his shot-blocking prowess and would provide a defensive anchor in the paint for the Lakers. However, reports indicate that the Pacers are asking for a hefty price in return for Turner, potentially including a combination of draft picks and young players.

While the Lakers are intrigued by the possibility of adding Turner to their lineup, they are also exploring other options at the point guard position. With LeBron James and Anthony Davis leading the way, the Lakers are looking for a playmaker who can facilitate the offense and take pressure off of their star duo.

Names like Kyle Lowry of the Toronto Raptors and Lonzo Ball of the New Orleans Pelicans have been mentioned in Lakers rumors as potential targets. Both guards bring different skill sets to the table, with Lowry known for his leadership and championship experience, while Ball is a young and talented playmaker with room to grow.

As the trade deadline approaches, Lakers fans will be eagerly anticipating any updates on potential acquisitions. With a championship on the line, the Lakers are leaving no stone unturned in their pursuit of adding talent to their roster. Stay tuned for more Lakers rumors as the deadline draws near.

The Indiana Pacers are reportedly hesitant about giving their veteran center a big extension this offseason.

Per The Athletic’s Jovan Buha, Myles Turner’s future with the Pacers could be in question due to his impending free agency and a potential disconnect in contract talks.

“It’s specifically just a basic contract situation of he is about to be an unrestricted free agent and he’s going to want $30-plus million and I’ve heard Indiana is not sure if they want to give him $30-plus million,” Buha said on his YouTube channel on Saturday (40:00 mark). “If they don’t, then from an asset management perspective, it makes sense to trade him and get something back for him.”

Buha also noted earlier this week that he’s heard “a little bit of chatter” about the Pacers’ willingness to trade Turner.

Turner, a 10-year veteran who has played his entire career with Indiana, is in the final season of a two-year, $58 million extension he signed in 2023. While some of his numbers have trailed off, he’s still been great for the Pacers, putting up 15.4 points, 6.8 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game, the fifth-best mark in the league.

A handful of teams would likely put in an offer for Turner if he were to become available, and the Los Angeles Lakers would presumably be among the interested squads. Los Angeles is on the cusp of being a contender but is likely at least one move away. Earlier this week, Lakers star Anthony Davis said that move should be adding to the frontcourt.

“I think we need another big,” Davis told ESPN’s Shams Charania. “I feel like I’ve always been at my best when I’ve been the 4, having a big out there.”

It might be tough to land Turner given that the Lakers don’t have much trade capital, but putting the big man next to Davis and LeBron James would make Los Angeles a team to watch in the Western Conference.

The Indiana Pacers are facing a tough decision regarding the future of center Myles Turner. According to recent rumors, the team is “not sure they want to” pay Turner a contract worth $30 million or more.

Turner, who has been with the Pacers since being drafted 11th overall in 2015, has shown flashes of brilliance on both ends of the court. He is known for his shot-blocking ability and has improved his three-point shooting in recent years.

However, with the NBA salary cap constraints and the team’s desire to build a competitive roster, the Pacers are hesitant to commit a large sum of money to Turner. This uncertainty has sparked rumors that the team could explore trading Turner in the offseason.

While nothing has been confirmed, the speculation has caught the attention of NBA fans and analysts alike. Turner’s future with the Pacers remains uncertain, but one thing is for sure – this situation will be one to watch as the offseason unfolds.

  • Explaining Myles Lewis-Skelly’s shock red card – and how Arsenal recovered from it

When Matt Doherty took his touch past Myles Lewis-Skelly, it was obvious to everyone inside Molineux what would come next. The 18-year-old Arsenal full-back duly brought Doherty down to prevent Wolves from breaking into the two-thirds of the pitch left vacant by Arsenal’s entire team being within 30 yards of the opposition goal for Declan Rice’s corner kick.

Lewis-Skelly walked away from the scene with the calmness of a player content that he had delivered an exemplary professional foul and taken a cynical yellow for his team. When he turned around, red was the colour of the card that referee Michael Oliver was brandishing. The teenager’s face was a picture of bemusement, as if he had missed an incident while he was looking the other way.

But the red card was for him. Two minutes before half-time, Arsenal found themselves confronted by a familiar wave of injustice. This was the fourth time they had been reduced to 10 men in the Premier League this season and, while there was a sense of grievance around Rice and Leandro Trossard being sent off against Brighton and Manchester City respectively for perceived time-wasting, this was a mix of bafflement and rage that had no caveats.

Oliver had the red card knocked from his hand as Arsenal’s apoplectic players protested the decision. Rice turned to the travelling supporters with his hands out and laughed, presumably because the only other option would be to cry.

At first, the only rationale those inside the ground could comprehend was that Oliver had deemed Lewis-Skelly to be the last defender between Doherty and the goal, but replays showed Trossard and Ethan Nwaneri were covering. Doherty was also 25 yards from his own net when he got brought down, so it would have taken a vivid imagination to suggest Lewis-Skelly was denying a clear goalscoring opportunity.

It seemed inevitable that the VAR team would recommend to Oliver that he take another look at the incident on the pitchside monitor. Instead, Darren England — who was the VAR when Liverpool’s Luis Diaz had a goal against Tottenham Hotspur ruled out for offside early last season — checked and cleared the decision.

The Premier League confirmed that Oliver’s decision was based on the severity of the foul rather than its location on the pitch.

There has since been widespread disbelief and anger on social media over the decision, as well as the VAR’s role in upholding it.

On BBC Radio 5 Live, former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin said officials were setting standards at “a bar so low even a limbo-dancing snake couldn’t get under it”.

Premier League rules state that a tackle that endangers the safety of an opponent or uses excessive force or brutality must be sanctioned as serious foul play. The considerations Oliver had to weigh up in his mind here included the speed, intensity, force, degree of control and the point and extent of contact.

If the contact occurs on the foot, it is typically considered reckless and indicative of a yellow card, but if contact is high, full and forceful on the ankle or above, referees are to consider it dangerous and therefore worthy of a red.

Mike Dean, the former Premier League referee, was one of the few pundits to support the decision. He said on Sky Sports: “When you see a still image, you understand what he has done. He has put his studs down his leg for serious foul play. Scraped down the Achilles.”

Lewis-Skelly’s right boot did catch Doherty above the ankle but it looked like a tripping motion from the side rather than a high-paced impact from behind that could have done serious damage.

Miles-Skelly’s boot initially catches Doherty above the ankle…

… but the main contact was on his foot as the Arsenal youngster tripped him

This was the eighth red card Oliver has shown to Arsenal players in his career, more than any other team he has officiated.

He was not flavour of the month with Arsenal fans before this weekend, as he showed Gabriel Martinelli two yellow cards within seconds for interrupting a throw-in and then fouling the player in the same sequence of play, also against Wolves, in February 2022. Oliver also decided against showing Manchester City’s Mateo Kovacic a second yellow for a late, lunging tackle from behind on Rice in October 2023, a decision referees’ chief Howard Webb said was incorrect.

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright was so vexed over the Lewis-Skelly incident he posted a video on his Instagram account criticising the decision. “It’s a joke. Anyone who has ever played the game — and I’m not even talking Premier League — I’m talking five-a-side, Sunday League, knows that it was never a red,” he said.

“(Give a) yellow card and nobody says a word. Time and time again, this level of refereeing in the Premier League, the decisions, the inconsistency, the excuses, the apologies. All of them are just the centre of attention for me.

“We can’t criticise too hard, simply because where are the refs going to come from? But I’m sorry, this is the highest level of football and we do not have the highest level of referees.

“When will the Premier League bring the best refs into the so-called best league in the world? At the moment, with this level of refereeing, we’re nowhere near it.”

Lewis-Skelly is now scheduled to be suspended for Arsenal’s next three domestic games, including the visit of Manchester City and the second leg of a Carabao Cup semi-final away to Newcastle. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, who declined to speak about the incident post-match other than to say he was “fuming”, suggested the decision to show a red card was so obviously wrong that he hopes the club will not even need to appeal for that ban to be overturned.

While Oliver’s call was not reversed by the VAR, Arsenal could still appeal against it, as Manchester United did in October last year when Bruno Fernandes was sent off for a high-boot challenge against Tottenham, below.

When Arteta named his team to face Wolves, the absences of captain Martin Odegaard (illness) and fellow midfielder Mikel Merino (knock) were the latest examples of Arsenal being denied continuity this season. When Lewis-Skelly was sent off, the weight of evidence that this is a cursed campaign for the north London side grew even heavier.

With Liverpool 3-0 up at half-time at home to Ipswich in another of the day’s 3pm kick-offs, the possibility of Arne Slot’s side moving eight or nine points clear with a game in hand on Arsenal loomed ominously.

Arteta had to find a way to still attack despite the numerical disadvantage and at half-time he substituted Nwaneri who, alongside Lewis-Skelly yesterday, had become the first two English players aged 18 or younger to start together in a league game for Arsenal since February 1998.

The Spaniard made the unusual decision to switch to a 5-3-1 rather than the more conventional 4-4-1 or 4-3-2, bringing on Riccardo Calafiori to play left wing-back.

Arsenal dominated territory in the opening 15 minutes of the second half as Rice and centre-back William Saliba railed against the doom by taking it in turns to single-handedly drive their team upfield. Arsenal resisted the temptation to become passive and, after Wolves’ Joao Gomes was shown a second yellow for a late challenge which caught Jurrien Timber on the ankle, parity was restored.

That left them with 20 minutes plus stoppage time to find a winner and it was Calafiori who delivered it four minutes later, bending a terrific half-volley away from goalkeeper Jose Sa and into the far corner. His badge-kissing and sprint into the middle of a wild flash-mob scene by the away dugout, which saw every team-mate celebrating as if it was their strike, captured how Arsenal had embraced the adversity and found a way to channel anger into defiance.

Calafiori begins the celebrations that ended in him being mobbed (Malcolm Couzens/Getty Images)

Arteta lived every action of the closing minutes. After conceding equalisers to Brighton and Manchester City to drop points on previous occasions this season when losing a man, he knew how important seeing through this victory was for belief.

It keeps Arsenal in the title race but also gave Arteta’s team and the fan base their first emotionally charged victory of the season. Yes, Arsenal have beaten big teams but until Saturday they had not enjoyed the release of unbridled joy that only comes from late winners or overcoming the odds.

    go-deeper

    GO DEEPER

The Briefing: Wolves 0 Arsenal 1 – Was Lewis-Skelly’s red card harsh? How did Arteta’s 10 men play?

Oliver’s full-time whistle delivered that outlet. An exhausted Kai Havertz had to be picked up from the ground but Rice found the energy to raise both hands in front of the delirious away supporters, who had kept their team going from their positions down the length of the Billy Wright Stand.

Even Arteta allowed himself an impassioned celebration before he bounded back across the pitch and down the tunnel.

It has taken until almost February but Arsenal have their first truly momentous victory of the season.

They will hope they look back on Lewis-Skelly’s red card as the moment they finally turned a speed bump into a ramp.

    (Top images: Premier League)

Myles Lewis-Skelly’s shock red card in Arsenal’s recent match left fans and players alike stunned. The young defender’s reckless tackle saw him sent off in the first half, leaving the Gunners with a man down and facing an uphill battle.

Despite the setback, Arsenal showed resilience and determination as they fought back from the early red card. Manager Mikel Arteta made tactical adjustments, shifting players around to cover for the missing defender and maintain their shape on the pitch.

The team’s composure and discipline were on full display as they weathered the storm and continued to press forward. The attacking players stepped up, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang leading the charge and scoring a crucial goal to level the playing field.

The defensive line also held firm, with the remaining players putting in a solid shift to keep the opposition at bay. Goalkeeper Bernd Leno made some key saves to keep Arsenal in the game and ultimately secure a hard-fought draw.

Overall, Arsenal’s ability to recover from Myles Lewis-Skelly’s red card and salvage a result speaks volumes about the team’s character and resilience. Despite the setback, they showed that they are a force to be reckoned with and capable of overcoming adversity on the pitch.

  • Myles Straw acquired by Blue Jays

TORONTO — The Blue Jays have taken a big, aggressive step in their pursuit of Japanese star Roki Sasaki.

The club announced Friday that they have acquired outfielder Myles Straw, cash and international bonus pool money from the Guardians for either a player to be named later or cash. All that matters here, for now, is the international bonus pool money, which totals $2 million, a source told MLB.com.

Toronto entered the 2025 international signing period with a pool of $6,261,600, over one million dollars more than the Dodgers at $5,146,200. By adding to that pool, the Blue Jays are positioning themselves to reach even higher as the chase for Sasaki is reportedly down to two clubs. The Blue Jays know how it feels to come out on the heartbreaking end against the Dodgers for a Japanese star, going back to the dramatic pursuit of Shohei Ohtani, but the organization is clearly making every effort to avoid a repeat.

Blue Jays get: International bonus pool money, OF Myles Straw, cash

Guardians get: Cash considerations or a player to be named later

Taking on Straw and his contract is no small move, which signals the Blue Jays’ aggressiveness here.

Straw is owed $13.8 million over the next two seasons with a buyout of $1.75 million waiting in 2027, all for a player who spent most of the season in Triple-A last year for the Guardians. Straw is a gifted defender, but he simply wasn’t hitting enough to stick in the big leagues. Yes, there’s a clear path to Straw opening the season with the Blue Jays if Daulton Varsho isn’t ready in time for Opening Day after a right shoulder injury ended his 2024 campaign early, but make no mistake, this deal is about Sasaki alone.

In the meantime, all of the Blue Jays’ other business on the international market is on hold while they await Sasaki’s decision. Sasaki’s free agency is incredibly rare for a player of his caliber, and since he is under 25 years old — he’s 23 — and has not yet played six professional seasons in a foreign league, he is subject to the international bonus pool instead of the same free-agent process that landed Yoshinobu Yamamoto a 12-year, $325 million deal a year ago. The opportunity to add this level of talent at this cost is a dream scenario for the Blue Jays, who have been working for years to make an impact in the Japanese market.

Sasaki’s negotiating window closes on January 23, but he is expected to make his choice prior to that date.

The Toronto Blue Jays have acquired outfielder Myles Straw from the Cleveland Guardians in exchange for cash considerations. Straw, 26, brings speed and defensive versatility to the Blue Jays lineup, having played all three outfield positions during his career.

Straw is known for his speed on the basepaths, having stolen 27 bases in 2021 and ranking in the top 10 in sprint speed among all MLB players. He also boasts a career .255 batting average and .689 OPS in 185 games.

The addition of Straw provides the Blue Jays with depth in the outfield and a potential leadoff hitter, as he has shown the ability to get on base and create havoc for opposing pitchers. Blue Jays fans can expect to see Straw making an impact on both offense and defense as the team makes a push for the playoffs.

  • Guardians trade Myles Straw and cash to Toronto for player to be named

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Toronto continues to be a dumping ground for the Guardians’ multiyear contracts.

They traded Gold Glove second baseman Andres Gimenez to the Blue Jays at the winter meetings to get out from under the almost $100 million they owed him. They continued the pattern on Friday by sending another Gold Glove defender, Myles Straw, to Toronto for a player to be named.

Cleveland also sent international bonus pool money and cash to the Blue to complete the deal. The G’s signed Straw to a five-year, $25 million deal in 2022 after they they acquired him at the trade deadline from Houston in 2021.

Straw spent almost the entired 2024 season at Class AAA Columbus after the Guardians outrighted him at the end of spring training. Earlier this week they announced that they were inviting him to spring training as a non-roster player.

The Houston Astros have traded outfielder Myles Straw and an undisclosed amount of cash to the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for a player to be named later.

Straw, 26, was a key contributor for the Astros last season, batting .268 with three home runs, 27 RBIs, and 30 stolen bases. The speedy outfielder is known for his excellent defense and base running skills, making him a valuable asset for any team.

In exchange for Straw, the Blue Jays will send a player to be named later to the Astros. This trade is expected to bolster Toronto’s outfield depth and provide them with a versatile player who can contribute on both offense and defense.

Stay tuned for more updates on this trade as the player to be named later is revealed.

  • Blue Jays Acquire Myles Straw, International Bonus Pool Space From Guardians

The Blue Jays announced that they have acquired outfielder Myles Straw, cash, and 2025 international bonus pool space from the Guardians. Cleveland receives a player to be named later or cash in return. Per Ben Nicholson-Smith and Shi Davidi of Sportsnet, the Jays are adding $2MM of pool space in the deal. Davidi had reported earlier that the Jays were looking to add pool space. Nicholson-Smith and Davidi further report that Cleveland is covering $3.75MM of the $15.5MM that is still owed to Straw. Per Zack Meisel of The Athletic, that will be $1MM in both 2025 and 2026, followed by $1.75MM after that.

With the international pool space, it’s fair to wonder about the Jays and their connection to Japanese right-hander Roki Sasaki. He has to choose his next club in less than a week and is subject to the international bonus pool signing rules. It has been reported that the Jays are one of three finalists for his services, alongside the Dodgers and Padres. Nicholson-Smith and Davidi both caution that this deal does not mean Sasaki has made a decision, rather that the Jays are being prepared for the possibility of Sasaki choosing them. It’s possible that the Padres view themselves as now out of the running, as they have reportedly started finalizing deals with other international amateurs, something they had put on hold while waiting for more info.

Unlike most free agents, Sasaki isn’t going to sign with the club that can offer him the most money. Since he is coming over to North America prior to his 25th birthday, having recently turned 23, he is considered an amateur under MLB’s rules. As such, he is subject to the league’s bonus pool system. Under this system, each team gets a set amount of money to spend on international amateurs each year. As laid out by Ben Badler of Baseball America, the 2025 pools are each between $5-8MM. Broadly speaking, the smaller-market clubs get a bit more than the bigger clubs. A club can also lower its pool amount by signing a player that rejected a qualifying offer.

Teams can trade their bonus pool space with each other, in increments of $250K, but a team can’t increase its initial allotment by more than 60%. As such, Sasaki won’t be able to sign for more than a few million bucks. There will also be a posting fee owed to the Chiba Lotte Marines, his Nippon Professional Baseball club, though that will also be minimal. If money were his primary motivation, he likely would stayed in Japan until he turned 25. That’s what Yoshinobu Yamamoto did, which allowed him to secure a $325MM deal from the Dodgers.

Sasaki is therefore presumably choosing his next clubs based on other factors. He and his agent Joel Wolfe have been fairly cagey about what those factors might be, leaving baseball fans to speculate. It has been suggested that geography, a team’s pitching development reputation and/or long-term competitive outlook are possible factors, though those are mostly guesses.

Though money won’t be the main factor, it’s possible that Sasaki and his reps would like a large bonus, simply out of respect and as a reflection of his status. Sasaki is far more coveted than even the top international amateurs from any other year. The vast majority of signees in the pool system are 16-year-olds from Latin America who are years away from contributing and come with the standard uncertainties that are present with even the best prospects. The best of those guys can sometimes get bonuses of $5MM or more. The Mets gave Elian Peña $5MM this week, the top bonus for an international signing of this year so far.

Sasaki, on the other hand, is viewed as a plug-and-play ace. He already has four years of experience in Japan, having posted a 2.10 earned run average in that time. Though he doesn’t have the ability to ask for Yamamoto money, perhaps he and his reps want to at least get to something in the $6-10MM range so that he at least gets the symbolic victory of being the top bonus of his class.

The Jays started with a pool of $6,261,600. The Dodgers had their pool dropped by $1MM for signing Shohei Ohtani, since he rejected a qualifying offer and they were a competitive balance tax payor in 2023, winding up at $5,146,200. Since the Jays are allowed to increase their pool by 60%, they can theoretically get that number as high as $10,018,560. This deal gets them up to $8,261,600.

In a normal year, all 30 MLB clubs would announced most of their signings on the first day of the international signing period on January 15. That’s because most of these bonuses have been negotiated years in advance. However, Sasaki’s presence has thrown a wrench into the normal operation of things. The Jays, Dodgers and Padres have reportedly been holding off on finalizing their international signings as they await Sasaki’s decision. His posting window closes January 23, so resolution will have to come soon. As mentioned, the Padres are reportedly going to start finalizing some of their international agreements. That doesn’t mean they are definitely out on Sasaki but is obviously a different approach to what the Jays are doing now.

Time will tell whether this extra pool space can help the Jays at all in signing Sasaki, but it suggests they still view it as a possibility. If Sasaki ends up signing elsewhere, they could perhaps try to trade some of that pool space later or use it in a different way. The Sasaki situation has also thrown a few other things into disarray, as a few prospects that were committed to the Dodgers ultimately pivoted to sign elsewhere, not wanting to wait around. Darell Morel, Oscar Patiño and Teilon Serrano each walked away from the Dodgers to sign with the Pirates, White Sox and Twins, respectively. As this game of musical chairs plays out, it’s possible that there will be some interesting ways to use pool space, even without Sasaki.

    More to come.

In a surprising move, the Toronto Blue Jays have acquired outfielder Myles Straw and international bonus pool space from the Cleveland Guardians. Straw, who was previously with the Guardians, is known for his speed and defensive prowess in the outfield.

This acquisition adds depth to the Blue Jays’ outfield and provides them with more flexibility in their lineup. Additionally, the international bonus pool space will allow the Blue Jays to potentially sign more top international prospects in the future.

Overall, this trade is a strategic move by the Blue Jays to strengthen their roster and position themselves for success in the upcoming season. Fans can look forward to seeing what impact Myles Straw will have on the team as they aim to compete for a playoff spot. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Toronto Blue Jays acquire OF Myles Straw, international signing bonus pool money from Guardians

The Toronto Blue Jays completed a deal with the Cleveland Guardians on Friday to acquire outfielder Myles Straw, cash considerations, and international signing bonus pool space for the 2025 period from the Cleveland Guardians in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations.

Straw, 30, appeared in seven games for the Guardians a season ago, going 1-for-4 with two runs scored and two stolen bases.

In 562 career MLB games with the Houston Astros and Guardians, Straw has hit .244 with six home runs and 125 runs batted in. Primarily a defensive substitute and pinch runner, Straw hit .240 in 123 games with the AAA Columbus Clippers last season.

Of potentially greater interest in the deal is the acquisition of international signing bonus pool money, as the Blue Jays are reportedly one of two finalists to land coveted free agent pitcher Roki Sasaki.

A report from MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand on Wednesday indicated the Padres, who have since reportedly fallen out of the running to sign Sasaki, and Los Angeles Dodgers were each looking to add international bonus pool money via trade, which would increase what they’d be able to offer Sasaki as a signing bonus under MLB’s international free agent rules.

As of Wednesday, the Blue Jays had $6,261,600 in their international pool, while the Dodgers were a bit behind at $5,146,200.

Teams are allowed to trade for up to 60 per cent of their international bonus pool, meaning Toronto could accumulate as much as $10,018,560 compared to Los Angeles’ maximum total of $8,233,920.

Sasaki’s posting ends next Thursday on Jan. 23, meaning he has to sign an MLB contract before then. His team in Japan, the Chiba Lotte Marines, posted him on Dec. 9, opening a 45-day window for him to reach an MLB agreement.

As TSN’s Scott Mitchell reports, the Blue Jays have still not been informed that a decision has been made by Sasaki.

Sasaki is the No. 2 ranked player on TSN’s Top 75 MLB Free Agents list released in November. The 23-year-old went 10-5 last season for Chiba, recording a 2.35 ERA and 129 strikeouts in 111.0 innings.

The Toronto Blue Jays have made a move to bolster their outfield depth, acquiring outfielder Myles Straw and international signing bonus pool money from the Cleveland Guardians.

Straw, 26, brings speed and defensive versatility to the Blue Jays’ roster. He has primarily played center field in his career but can also handle left and right field. In 2021, Straw hit .271 with a .349 on-base percentage and stole 30 bases in 103 games split between the Houston Astros and Guardians.

In addition to adding Straw to their outfield mix, the Blue Jays also received an undisclosed amount of international signing bonus pool money from the Guardians. This will give Toronto additional flexibility to pursue international prospects and further strengthen their farm system.

Overall, this trade represents a low-risk, high-reward move for the Blue Jays as they look to improve their depth and competitiveness in the American League East. Stay tuned for more updates on the Blue Jays’ offseason moves as they continue to build towards the 2022 season.

  • Myles Garrett would rather ‘mess up’ Ravens’ division title hopes than earn sack crown

Myles Garrett would rather ‘mess up’ Ravens’ division title hopes than earn sack crown

The Ravens would clinch the division title with a win. A loss would give the Steelers a shot to retake the AFC North with a win in the later game.

With two sacks Saturday, the 29-year-old Garrett would tie his career-high with 16 (2021 and 2022).

Garrett has notched five and a half sacks against Jackson in his career. He said those are the hardest out of his 102.5 career sacks.

“Absolutely. It’s not even close,” Garrett said. There are definitely some other special cats at the quarterback position who are shifty. I mean, Pat (Patrick Mahomes) himself, he has great contact balance, but, I mean, Lamar has that. But he also has speed, he has quickness, is shifty, so he has that tremendous running ability, and he can also throw the ball pretty much anyone on the field right now.”

Garrett sees Jackson’s improvement as a pocket passer as a game-changer for the quarterback, making him much more dangerous for defenses. The pass rusher was asked if it was possible to take Jackson completely out of the game.

“Completely? Hell, no. The man’s amazing,” Garrett said. “A couple years back, you would say, ‘Try to keep him in the pocket.’ I think even beginning of the season we were like, ‘Try to keep him in pocket, make him throw as much as possible,’ and now you’re like, ‘S—, we don’t know what to do.’ He’s been steadily growing year after year. He lost that baby weight. Now he’s back to being lean and fast as hell. So now, whether he breaks the pocket or he stays in the pocket, you’re going to have a rough day because he can do everything.”

The Browns defeated Baltimore earlier this season in a 29-24 shootout. Jackson threw for 289 yards with two touchdowns and rushed eight times for 46 yards. Cleveland sacked the QB three times (none by Garrett). Jameis Winston threw for three touchdowns in the win. Bailey Zappe is set to start Week 18 for the Browns.

Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett has his sights set on disrupting the Baltimore Ravens’ chances of winning the AFC North division title, even if it means sacrificing his own personal accolades.

Garrett, who is currently leading the league in sacks, recently expressed his desire to prioritize team success over individual achievements. In a press conference, he stated, “I’d rather mess up the Ravens’ division title hopes than earn the sack crown. Winning games and helping my team succeed is more important to me than any personal accolades.”

This selfless attitude and dedication to his team’s success exemplifies Garrett’s commitment to being a team player and putting the greater good above his own personal goals. As the Browns continue to fight for a playoff spot, Garrett’s leadership and team-first mentality will undoubtedly play a crucial role in their success.

Fans and teammates alike can take inspiration from Garrett’s mindset and dedication to the team, as he continues to showcase his talent and selflessness on the field. With players like Garrett leading the way, the Browns are poised for success both now and in the future.

The perfect scenario for how Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett sees Week 18 unfolding is simple: A Browns win over the Baltimore Ravens on Saturday afternoon followed by a Pittsburgh Steelers victory versus the Cincinnati Bengals that night.

Even though Garrett has a chance to win the NFL’s sack title, he’s ranking spoiling the Ravens’ AFC North division title hopes over an individual accomplishment.

“I mean, I’d rather upset them and mess up their playoff hopes,” Garrett said on Thursday. “And if the sack title comes along with that, great. Definitely going to do what I can to be disruptive and take [Lamar Jackson] out of the game as much as possible. If that comes along with it, outstanding. But at the end of the day, I want to win.”

Garrett enters Week 18 tied with Trey Hendrickson of the Bengals with 14 sacks on the season. He’s the only player in NFL history to record at least 14 sacks in four consecutive seasons and has 102.5 in his seven-season career.

The 11-5 Ravens, meanwhile, can clinch the AFC North for a second straight season if they beat the Browns on Saturday. If Garrett gets his wish and the 3-13 Browns pull off the upset, then that opens the door for the Steelers to earn the division crown with a victory.

While Garrett isn’t focusing on the sack title, he is eyeballing another NFL Defensive Player of the Year award, which he won last season.

Garrett said he feels he’s having a better year than 2023 when he recorded 14 sacks, four forced fumbles and 33 solo tackles.

“I feel like I faced much more difficult odds this year, and offenses have done quite a lot to try to take me up the game and made it blatantly obvious,” Garrett said. “But I feel like the guys around me have really helped me thrive as much as I have at this point. Just got to continue to add on to what I’ve done with this last game. But I couldn’t have done it without all the guys with me, the other 10.”

Denver Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain II has taken over as the betting favorite for the award with Steelers linebacker T.J. Watt — the 2021 winner — right behind him.

When asked why Garrett believes he’s the best defensive player in the NFL right now he had a simple response.

“Why? Go check the tape. That’s why.”

In a recent interview, Cleveland Browns’ defensive end Myles Garrett made it clear that he is more focused on disrupting the Baltimore Ravens’ quest for a division title than winning the NFL sack crown.

Garrett, who is currently leading the league in sacks, emphasized that he would much rather “mess up” the Ravens’ chances of winning the AFC North than prioritize personal accolades. The star pass rusher expressed his desire to be a difference-maker for his team and help the Browns secure a playoff spot.

With the Ravens currently leading the division, Garrett’s words serve as a reminder of the intense rivalry between the two teams and his commitment to doing whatever it takes to come out on top. As the season progresses, fans can expect Garrett to continue wreaking havoc on opposing offenses in his pursuit of both team success and individual excellence.
