  • Former PlayStation Boss Names One Feature the PS6 Should Not Exclude

    Summary

    • Former PlayStation boss Shawn Layden believes that the PS6 must include an optical disc drive.
    • While Sony has already started offering discless consoles during the PS5 generation, an all-digital PS6 would alienate too many existing users, Layden believes.
    • The industry veteran suspects the rumored standalone PlayStation handheld will also have to support cartridges or some other form of physical media for much the same reasons, assuming that device ever makes it to the market.

Shawn Layden, the former Chairman, President, and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios, believes that the PlayStation 6 should include a physical disc drive at all costs. The industry veteran said as much during a recent interview, which saw him explain why he doesn’t believe Sony can pull off an all-digital PlayStation console generation just yet.

The PS5 Digital Edition was Sony’s first-ever home console that launched without an optical disc drive. Since then, the company has also introduced the PS5 Pro and a discless variant of the PS5 Slim, both of which can be equipped with a separately purchased Blu-ray drive. In light of these product releases, some fans and industry watchers alike have been speculating that Sony might be gearing up for an all-digital console generation sooner rather than later.

Rumor: PS6 Leak May Hint at Console’s Release Window

A well-known hardware leaker provides some new information that may hint at the potential release window of Sony’s PlayStation 6.

Former SIE Worldwide Studios CEO Shawn Layden disagrees with this forecast, having said as much during a recent interview with YouTube channel Kiwi Talkz. “I don’t think Sony can get away with [an all-digital PS6] now,” the industry veteran said. Elaborating on this notion, Layden noted that Sony’s home consoles continue to see plenty of use in environments with slow internet speeds or no connectivity whatsoever, whether due to technical or security reasons. From rural players to users on military bases, there are still many consumers who would be unable to consistently enjoy modern PlayStation games if Sony stopped supporting physical media, the former PlayStation boss said.

A Discless PS6 Lineup Would Alienate Many PlayStation Users

Given this state of affairs, a fully discless PS6 lineup would alienate a significant portion of PlayStation users, which Layden cites as the main reason why Sony likely can’t pull off an all-digital home console generation just yet. Although the former SIE executive didn’t speculate beyond the tenth console generation, some other market watchers already did. E.g., Circana analyst Mat Piscatella previously predicted that the PS7 will be Sony’s first all-digital console.

Rumored PlayStation Handheld Will Likely Have to Support Physical Media As Well

Elsewhere during the interview, Layden discussed the challenges of an all-digital console generation through the prism of recent reports about Sony developing a new standalone PlayStation handheld. While the portable form factor would rule out support for Blu-ray discs, that doesn’t mean Sony could make it entirely digital either—for the same reasons that a discless PS6 would be problematic, Layden explained. As a result, he expects Sony’s rumored handheld to feature a physical media option, possibly using Switch-like cartridges, assuming the device ever materializes. Layden holds similar expectations for the Xbox handheld, which Microsoft recently confirmed is in the prototyping stage but has yet to be approved for commercialization.

I don’t think Sony can get away with [an all-digital PS6] now.

Several Sony executives have previously said that the PS5 had entered the latter half of its life cycle as of early 2024. In light of those remarks and the company’s track record with console release timings, the PS6 is expected to hit the market in either late 2027 or Q4 2028.

Former PlayStation Boss Jim Ryan recently spoke out about one feature that he believes the upcoming PS6 should not exclude: backwards compatibility.

In an interview with IGN, Ryan emphasized the importance of backwards compatibility in gaming consoles, stating that it allows gamers to access and play their favorite titles from previous generations. He pointed out that the PS5’s backwards compatibility feature has been well-received by fans, and he believes that this should be a key feature in future PlayStation consoles as well.

Ryan’s comments come as rumors swirl about the upcoming PS6, with many speculating about what new features and improvements it will bring. While details about the PS6 are still scarce, Ryan’s endorsement of backwards compatibility suggests that this feature will likely be a priority for Sony in the development of their next console.

As fans eagerly await more news about the PS6, it seems that they can at least rest assured that one beloved feature will not be left behind.

  • ‘He’s better than you’: Cristiano Ronaldo’s son names favorite player

Cristiano Ronaldo turns 40 next week but his advancing age hasn’t dimmed his famous competitive instinct.

He has scored 20 goals in 23 appearances for Al Nassr this season and remains a regular starter for the Portuguese national team. But his age is undoubtedly catching up with him and CR7’s son has reportedly told his dad that’s he’s no longer No. 1.

Speaking in an interview this week, Ronaldo revealed which player his son Mateo believes is the best in the world.

“Mateo, he really likes Mbappé,” Ronaldo explained. “He sometimes tells me: Hey dad, Mbappé is better than you,’ and I reply by saying: ‘No, I am better than him, I have scored more goals.”

Kylian Mbappé has been viewed as Cristiano Ronaldo's long-term replacement for Real Madrid.

Mbappé has made no secret of that fact that Ronaldo was his hero growing up, one of the main reasons why he coveted a move to Real Madrid in his career. The Frenchman has not looked entirely comfortable during his first season at the Santiago Bernabeu but a recent purple patch of form has put him on track for a very respectable goals tally.

With a hat-trick last weekend Mbappé is now on 15 LaLiga goals in his first season with the club, 22 goals in all competitions. CR7 hit 33 goals in his first season in Madrid, although injury restricted him to just 35 appearances in all competitions.

If Mbappé stays fit this campaign he could still catch Ronaldo’s goal tally from his debut season in the Spanish capital. Is that likely to make Ronaldo concede that the Frenchman is now his equal? Unlikely.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s son has made a bold statement by naming his favorite player, and it’s not who you might expect. In a recent interview, Ronaldo’s son revealed that he looks up to Lionel Messi as his favorite player.

Despite his father’s status as one of the greatest footballers of all time, it seems that Ronaldo’s son has developed a fondness for his father’s long-time rival. The young football fan praised Messi’s skill and talent on the pitch, calling him “the best player in the world.”

While some may be surprised by this revelation, it’s clear that Ronaldo’s son is not afraid to go against the norm and choose his own favorite player. Perhaps this is a sign of the changing times in football, where loyalty and admiration are not always tied to family ties.

Regardless of his son’s choice, Cristiano Ronaldo remains a legend in the sport and continues to inspire fans around the world. It will be interesting to see how this playful rivalry between father and son plays out in the years to come.

  • Trump names Treasury’s Scott Bessent acting head after firing Chopra

Republican presidential nominee former President Donald Trump, left, listens as investor Scott Bessent speaks on the economy in Asheville, N.C., Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2024.

    Matt Kelley | AP

President Donald Trump has made Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent the acting director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau after firing former head Rohit Chopra over the weekend.

Bessent, a former hedge fund manager who was confirmed as head of the U.S. Treasury last week, will presumably lead the CFPB until a permanent pick is named.

“I look forward to working with the CFPB to advance President Trump’s agenda to lower costs for the American people and accelerate economic growth,” Bessent said in a CFPB statement released Monday announcing his appointment.

Chopra, who was appointed by former President Joe Biden in 2021, was often at loggerheads with the U.S. banking industry after pushing to drastically rein in practices around credit card late fees and overdraft fees, among many other efforts. Trade groups representing banks fought these regulations in court, fending off rules that would’ve saved Americans billions of dollars in fees, but that the industry called poorly considered or unjustified.

Banking groups had expected Chopra to be fired as soon as Trump’s inauguration day, but Chopra remained on for nearly two weeks into Trump’s second term, continuing to fire off releases and weigh in on hot-button topics including whether banks unfairly closed accounts.

This story is developing. Please check back for updates.

In a surprising move, President Trump has named Treasury’s Scott Bessent as the acting head after firing Rohit Chopra. This latest shakeup in the administration has left many wondering about the future direction of the Treasury Department. President Donald Trump’s return to the White House could clear the way for the public to finally see a glimpse of Jeffrey Epstein’s long-awaited “black book,” as questions about the deceased financier and sex trafficker continue to swirl years after he was found dead in a federal jail in New York City.

Sen. Marsha Blackburn, a Tennessee Republican who has long called for the government to release more of its evidence against Epstein and his potential accomplices, raised the issue during a Senate confirmation hearing Thursday for Trump’s FBI director nominee, Kash Patel.

“I have been working on this for years, trying to get those records of who flew on Epstein’s plane and who helped him build this international human trafficking, sex trafficking ring,” Blackburn told the nominee.

(U.S. Department of Justice/Mega)

She said past attempts to convince former committee chairman Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Illinois, to subpoena the information failed, and former FBI Director Christopher Wray declined to hand it over to her as well.

“Will you work with me on this issue, so we know who worked with Jeffrey Epstein in building these sex trafficking rings?” Blackburn asked Patel.

“Absolutely, senator,” Patel replied. “Child sex trafficking has no place in the United States of America, and I will do everything, if confirmed as FBI director, to make sure the American public knows the full weight of what happened in the past and how we are going to countermand missing children and exploited children going forward.”

Durbin’s office previously denied allegations that he “stonewalled” Blackburn’s request and blamed “an obscure Senate rule” for ending debate on the issue.

More than a year has gone by, and the records remain out of public view.

    — Kash Patel, nominee for FBI director

“Jeffrey Epstein built a disgusting global sex trafficking network that caused irreparable damage to countless women,” Blackburn said last week. “Americans deserve to know exactly who was affiliated with this network.”

Epstein, a 66-year-old millionaire financier with a private island in the U.S. Virgin Islands and mansions around the country, died in federal custody in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.

He had landed a sweetheart plea deal more than a decade earlier after having sex with a teenager – 13 months in jail with work release during the day.

“This is not about celebrities – this is about what happened to victims and survivors,” Blackburn said.

Blackburn has long called for the release of additional evidence against the deceased defendant believed to be in the FBI’s possession.

She urged Wray to disclose more information in 2023. She renewed her calls in November after Patel’s nomination.

“I look forward to working with Kash Patel as FBI Director to release Epstein’s flight logs and black book,” she wrote on X. “Under the Trump administration, the American people are going to get answers.”

A federal court ordered thousands of pages of sealed records to be made public last year. They revealed nearly 200 names, many of which belonged to people who were not accused of crimes. Some of them were prominent figures, including politicians, billionaire business leaders and celebrities.

Epstein’s so-called black book, expected to include potential conspirators in his international sex trafficking ring, remains a mystery.

A group of 12 Epstein accusers also sued the FBI last year, alleging the bureau failed to properly investigate credible allegations that he led a “sex trafficking ring for the elite” as far back as the 1990s.

The FBI previously said it does not comment on pending litigation.

JEFFREY EPSTEIN ACCUSER MOCKS ‘NERVOUS’ ASSOCIATES SET TO BE NAMED: ‘WHO’S ON THE NAUGHTY LIST?’

Epstein, his former lover and now a convicted accomplice, Ghislaine Maxwell, and unnamed co-conspirators allegedly abused young women and underage girls between 1996 and his death in 2019, according to the lawsuit. Citing police documents, it alleges that Epstein recruited girls between 14 and 16 as well as students at Palm Beach Community College for “sex-tinged sessions.”

He allegedly coerced them into silence with violent threats: “You’re going to die; I’m going to break your legs,” according to the lawsuit.

“We know the FBI seized a treasure trove of surveillance footage from Epstein’s Palm Beach home where he ran his operations,” Blackburn said at the time. “Why won’t they release those tapes or the flight logs I’ve been requesting for months?”

In addition to Maxwell, another Epstein associate, French modeling agent Jean-Luc Brunel, was also charged with sex trafficking. Like Epstein, he turned up dead in a jail cell

Maxwell is appealing her conviction while serving a sentence at a federal prison in Tallahassee. She is due for release in the summer of 2037.

FORMER MODEL RECALLS JEFFREY EPSTEIN ABUSE AT PRIVATE ISLAND

At the state level, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis last year signed a new law that allowed secret grand jury transcripts to be made public in the case.

Hours after the law took effect, Palm Beach County Court Clerk and Comptroller Joseph Abruzzo announced the release.

Palm Beach police initially opened an investigation into Epstein after a fight between high school girls, according to the transcripts. One, just 16, had been accused of prostitution by a classmate, and a school official later found $300 in her purse – payment from Epstein.

She testified that she had been instructed to concoct a fake life story and pretend to be 18 to get $200 to give Epstein a massage before the first time she met him. Then she revealed she was asked to strip down to her underwear and had a graphic sexual encounter with him.

In a court order authorizing the release of the documents, Circuit Judge Luis Delgado warned that the contents were disturbing.

“It is widely accepted that Epstein is a notorious and serial pedophile,” the order reads. “The testimony taken by the Grand Jury concerns activity ranging from grossly unacceptable to rape – all of the conduct at issue is sexually deviant, disgusting, and criminal. The details in the record will be outrageous to decent people.”

The question remains – who else was involved?

The recent news surrounding Jeffrey Epstein’s files has caused quite a stir, especially in regards to the infamous ‘black book’ list that allegedly contains the names of high-profile individuals who were associated with Epstein. With the upcoming election, many are speculating that Trump’s potential reelection could lead to the exposure of these names.

The ‘black book’ list has long been a source of speculation and intrigue, with rumors swirling about the powerful people who may have been connected to Epstein and his illicit activities. The possibility of these names being revealed has raised concerns about the potential fallout and the impact it could have on those involved.

As the election draws nearer, the pressure is mounting for Trump to address the issue and potentially release the names on the ‘black book’ list. With the stakes so high, the revelations could have far-reaching implications for not only the individuals named, but also for the political landscape as a whole.

The Epstein files have already shed light on the extent of his connections and the disturbing nature of his crimes. The potential release of the ‘black book’ list could further expose the dark underbelly of the elite circles that Epstein moved in, and could have ripple effects that extend far beyond the election.

As the situation continues to unfold, one thing is clear: the Epstein files have the potential to shake up the political and social landscape in ways that we can only begin to imagine. The truth may soon come to light, and the fallout could be monumental.

  • Finland names Jokiharju, Vaakanainen as 4 Nations replacements

Finland is adding defensemen Henri Jokiharju of the Buffalo Sabres and Urho Vaakanainen of the New York Rangers to its roster for the 4 Nations Face-Off.

The Finnish Ice Hockey Federation on Sunday named Jokiharju and Vaakanainen as injury replacements for Miro Heiskanen and Jani Hakanpaa. Finland had only four players left to choose from to fill those spots because only 11 defensemen from that country have played in the NHL this season; the other seven already were on the roster.

Jokiharju and Vaakanainen were by far the most experienced of that quartet. Winnipeg‘s Ville Heinola has appeared in just 51 games and Ottawa‘s Nikolas Matinpalo 19 since debuting in the league.

“It’s great to have Henri and Urho on board,” coach Antti Pennanen said in announcing the decisions. “Both are very motivated and looking forward to the tournament and the opportunity to represent their country.”

Finland on Saturday ruled out Hakanpää, who appeared in only two games this season for Toronto and none since mid-November because of a lower body injury.

Heiskanen would have been Finland’s No. 1 defenseman, but he was injured on a hit by Mark Stone in Dallas‘ game against Vegas on Tuesday night. The Stars listed Heiskanen as week to week with a lower body injury, and Finland acknowledged he won’t be playing 4 Nations.

“He’s that type of player that any team in the world would love to have,” captain Aleksander Barkov said Thursday of Heiskanen. “He is a leader defensively and really good offensively, so he’s a huge part of Team Finland’s success. … All the best and try and get back as soon as possible and as healthy as possible. Health is the most important thing.”

Finland opens Feb. 13 against the U.S., plays rival Sweden on Feb. 15 and finishes round-robin play Feb. 17 against Canada.

Sweden also has a few injury situations to monitor. Vegas’ William Karlsson and Minnesota‘s Jonas Brodin remain out, while Boston‘s Hampus Lindholm is close to returning from his absence.

Canada must still name a replacement for two-time Stanley Cup champion and 2014 Olympic gold medalist Alex Pietrangelo, who withdrew “to tend to an ailment and prepare for the remainder of the regular season,” the Golden Knights said.

In a surprising move, Team Finland has named Henri Jokiharju and Urho Vaakanainen as replacements for the upcoming 4 Nations tournament. Jokiharju, a defenseman for the Buffalo Sabres, and Vaakanainen, a defenseman for the Boston Bruins, will be stepping in for injured players on the Finnish squad. Both players have shown great skill and promise in the NHL, and are sure to bring their A-game to the tournament. • Duncan Robinson names key reason LA Lakers’ JJ Redick is going to succeed as a coach, ‘he’s never going to’

JJ Redick has experienced a lot in his early days as a coach, it comes with the territory of taking the job at the LA Lakers.

After a poor start to the season, the Lakers appear to have found the winning formula and have lost just one of their last six games which came against the Philadelphia 76ers.

The Lakers coach was under pressure from the fans early in his tenure but some strong trades bringing in Dorian Finney Smith and Shake Milton have helped the side come together.

Redick has some great coaching qualities and Miami Heat’s Duncan Robinson has highlighted one key reason why he’s going to be a success.

Los Angeles, California November 13, 2024-Lakers Dalton Knecht talks with head coach JJ Redick at Crypto.com Arena Wednesday.

    Robinson praises Redick’s relentlessness

One of Redick’s greatest qualities is his unwavering competetiveness which sees him demand the most from his team.

The former shooting guard is never afraid to call out his players and he recently demanded more from Bronny James following a poor performance against the Utah Jazz.

While Redick is not afraid to question his team, he also balances this out with a supportive role which looks to draw the very best out of his stars.

This support has seen his players stand up for him in situations where he is receiving heat from the media, he recently got into a large spat with Charles Barkley about the ‘negativity’ the media portrays on the league.

Redick is still young in his coaching career having never had a role before the Lakers job, but Robinson has highlighted why he believes he will be a success.

Speaking on The Young Man and The Three, he said: “I think one reason why JJ is going to be such a good coach in time is that he’s not going to relent, he’s always going to try and find ‘this isn’t working we’re pivoting we’re playing, we’re going to figure out what’s next.”

Reaves opens up on Redick relationship

Austin Reaves has become a key part of the Lakers set-up under JJ Redick and is putting in some starring performances this season.

AR15 is grateful for his opportunity at the Lakers and he is thriving under Redick’s mentorship where he is averaging 18-4-6, his best in his NBA career so far.

The star, who went undrafted, is also a big supporter of his teammates and has explained how he is looking to help current rookie Dalton Knecht.

Reaves spoke openly about his relationship with Redick in which he feels the pair can be open with one another.

He said: “He [Redick] can say anything to me. If it’s the middle of the game he can sit there and cuss me out if he wants as I know it’s coming from a good place as I’ve spent so much time with him on a human level.

“He’s told me multiple times if there’s a situation where I need to cuss him out he said ‘Go ahead, I’m not going to hold anything against you, we’re both competitors’ so that was the main thing, we can always be honest with each other.”

Redick will now be looking to build on his 27-19 start with the Lakers, he might even be preparing to welcome a new face to the side.

Duncan Robinson names key reason LA Lakers’ JJ Redick is going to succeed as a coach, ‘he’s never going to’

In a recent interview, Miami Heat sharpshooter Duncan Robinson shared his thoughts on former NBA player JJ Redick’s transition into coaching with the Los Angeles Lakers. Robinson praised Redick’s basketball IQ and work ethic, stating that these qualities will make him a successful coach in the NBA.

“He’s never going to settle for mediocrity,” Robinson said. “JJ is a perfectionist on the court, and I know he will bring that same level of dedication and attention to detail to his coaching career. He’s always looking for ways to improve and get better, and I have no doubt that he will instill that same mindset in his players.”

Robinson also highlighted Redick’s leadership skills and ability to connect with players on a personal level as key factors that will contribute to his success as a coach. “JJ knows how to motivate and inspire his teammates, and I think that will translate well to coaching,” Robinson said. “He’s a great communicator and has a natural ability to bring people together.”

With Redick’s impressive resume as a player and his passion for the game, it seems that he is poised for a successful coaching career with the Lakers. As Robinson noted, Redick’s drive for excellence and his ability to connect with players will undoubtedly set him apart as a coach in the NBA.

Only time will tell how Redick’s coaching career will unfold, but based on Robinson’s comments, it seems like he is on the right path to success.

  • Bully Ray Names WWE Star He’d Want To See Wrestle Every Night

Since Triple H took over as head of creative of WWE in 2022, certain stars have become essential viewing for their in-ring talent. Wrestlers such as Chad Gable and IYO SKY have been given more opportunities to showcase their abilities in the ring, while also proving to be some of the most relied-upon stars to deliver a good match on any given night.

In a recent edition of “Busted Open Radio,” Bully Ray revealed which WWE star he would choose to watch compete in the ring on a nightly basis if given the option to watch only one match.

“I think if you gave me a choice and you said you can only watch one person’s match tonight, I think I’d say GUNTHER, ’cause I know I’m going to get something that I love. I know that there’s going to be a great story in the match along with great physicality. I’m just saying like maybe a top three guy, he’s bang for your buck, give me a GUNTHER match,” he said. “Dude, GUNTHER and Sami Zayn is really good stuff. It doesn’t scream Rock-Hogan, but, man, is it a great match. GUNTHER, he’s so, so good at what he does, I don’t try to find holes in people’s game. You watch GUNTHER’s stuff, you can’t find holes in his game.”

GUNTHER has easily entered the conversation for WWE’s best in-ring competitor at the moment, with his matches against Sami Zayn, Sheamus and Drew McIntyre being great examples of why “The Ring General” is considered one of the most talented performers in pro wrestling today.

  • Possible Spoiler On Two Big WWE Names In Town For The Royal Rumble

Expect the unexpected regarding who might just show up in the men and women’s Royal Rumbles tonight. Ahead of what will likely be an unpredictable night, it appears two former world champions are in Indianapolis, Indiana, the host city for this year’s Rumble. According to reports by “Fightful Select,” two-time WWE Champion “The Phenomenal” AJ Styles, and two-time NXT Champion Trick Williams are in town. As of this report, there is no confirmation if either man will participate in the men’s Royal Rumble, or if they are simply in Indianapolis to fulfill other obligations this weekend.

Styles, who was last seen on the October 4 “WWE SmackDown,” sustained a Lisfranc injury during his contest against Carmelo Hayes. Last month, Styles wrote in a post on X that his timeframe to return was unknown, considering this injury was “challenging” to recover from. In December, Styles visited his old stomping grounds, making a backstage visit during TNA Final Resolution. It was reported that at that visit, he was not wearing or using a brace, cast, or crutch.

Regarding Williams, last year, he reclaimed the NXT Championship from Ethan Page at the premiere of “WWE NXT” on The CW in October. He held the title for 98 days until it changed hands to Oba Femi at New Year’s Evil on January 7. Recently, Williams expressed his desire to headline WrestleMania. While he believes he has a long way to go before he feels he’s made it, the Rumble could provide him with that opportunity if he indeed participates.

But, man, there’s been a lot, like, I think the first match I had with Ivar where I came back with extra cushion around my waist was a pretty nerve-wracking one for me because I didn’t even think I was going to be able to wrestle again, so I came back on that one.”

On his match with Ivar: “I was pretty nervous with that, but Ivar is such a great talent it was easy enough. Also, the triple threat, I think, with me, Drew [McIntyre] and [Ilja] Dragunov, I think that was the match for me that I actually belt, ‘I’m back.’”
