  • There’s a small chance an asteroid could hit Earth within the next decade, says NASA


    A large asteroid could pass close enough to Earth within the next decade that there’s a chance it could strike the planet, according to NASA.

    The space rock, named 2024 YR4, is between 130 feet and 330 feet in diameter and could hit Earth in 2032, according to NASA’s Center for Near Earth Object Studies.

    But that likelihood is low, with just a 1.3% chance that the asteroid could make direct impact on the planet on Dec. 22, 2032, according to space experts.

    Astronomers monitoring the ATLAS telescope at the University of Hawaii first spotted the asteroid as it was moving away from Earth on Dec. 27 and reported it to the International Astronomical Union Minor Planet Center, which determined it had never before been seen, Kelly Fast, a planetary defense officer at NASA, told ABC News.

    Asteroid 2024 YR4 has an “interesting” orbit, Fast said. The elongated path takes the asteroid around the sun and into Earth’s vicinity before it ventures far out between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, she said.

    “In the past, even though it’s passed through the inner solar system before, it didn’t always pass by where the Earth happened to be, where it could be picked up easily,” Fast said, explaining why the asteroid was only recently discovered.

    Because of its unique orbit, astronomers are trying to learn everything they can about 2024 YR4 before it disappears out of sight after April, Fast said. It’s not expected to be visible again until 2028.

    The end of 2032 is when astronomers predict 2024 YR will come close to Earth again, Fast said, adding that further observations are expected to provide data to support the likelihood that 2024 YR4 will avoid hitting Earth.

    “The worldwide community is continuing to take observations,” Fast said. “it can’t all happen in a day, because the asteroid has to keep moving in the sky.”

    The Large Binocular Telescope Interferometer, or LBTI, is a ground-based instrument connecting two 8-meter class telescopes on Mount Graham in Arizona to form the largest single-mount telescope in the world.

    Astronomers estimate the size of asteroids based on how much light they reflect. Based on current data, 2024 YR is large enough for it to potentially cause localized damage were it to strike a populated city, Fast said.

    In 1908, the Tunguska asteroid, which was a similar size, flattened trees over an area of about 1,250 miles after it exploded in the skies over Siberia.

    Congress has tasked NASA with locating asteroids larger than 450 feet in length – large enough to potentially do “regional” damage were it to strike the planet, Fast said.

    Smaller asteroids, within a few yards in diameter, tend to be disintegrated by Earth’s atmosphere and transformed into fireballs, Fast said.

    NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) Asteroid Watch tracks asteroids and comets that will make relatively close approaches to Earth. Five asteroids are forecast to pass near Earth in the coming days.

    On Friday, two asteroids are expected to pass near Earth, according to the updated list. Asteroid 2025 BR2, with JPL describes as an “airplane-size” space rock about 67 feet long, is expected to pass within 3.21 million miles of Earth, while another asteroid, 2015 DJ155 – two-and-a-half times as large, at 170 feet – is expected to pass within 4.42 million miles of Earth.

    Two more asteroids, 2025 BG4 and 2025 BR7 – 75 and 100 feet in length, respectively – are forecast to pass within 3.09 million miles and 3.58 million miles of Earth, respectively, also on Friday.

    On Sunday, 2025 BU, which JPL describe as being about the size of a house, at around 54 feet in length, is predicted to pass within 2.1 million miles of Earth, according to Asteroid Watch.

    Fast emphasized that although these asteroids are passing “relatively” close to Earth, they’re still a great distance away. The moon itself is fewer than 240,000 miles from Earth and there are often asteroids passing Earth within that distance, she said.

    “Space is big, and so that’s very far away,” Fast said.



    NASA has revealed that there is a small chance an asteroid could potentially hit Earth within the next decade. While the probability is low, it serves as a reminder of the importance of monitoring near-Earth objects and being prepared for any potential impact.

    According to NASA’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies, there are currently no known asteroids on a collision course with Earth in the next decade. However, they continue to track and monitor asteroids to ensure the safety of our planet.

    In the event that an asteroid is detected on a collision course with Earth, NASA has plans in place to mitigate the impact, including possible deflection missions. This highlights the importance of investing in asteroid detection and deflection technologies to protect our planet from potential threats.

    While the likelihood of an asteroid impact is small, it is crucial to remain vigilant and prepared for any potential scenario. NASA’s continued efforts in monitoring near-Earth objects serve as a reminder of the importance of planetary defense and the need for international cooperation in safeguarding our planet.

  • NASA Tracking Bus-Size Asteroid Approaching Earth at 30,000 Mph


    An asteroid the size of a school bus is set to zoom by the Earth on Tuesday, traveling several times faster than a speeding bullet.

    The asteroid, named 2025 BS4, is said by NASA‘s Jet Propulsion Laboratory to be roughly 22 feet in diameter, with JPL’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) estimated that it could be between 17 and 40 feet across.

    The average American school bus is roughly 35 to 40 feet long, for reference.

    The asteroid has a speed of 16.02 km/s, or about 35,835 mph, while the fastest bullets can only travel about 1,800 mph.

    2025 BS4 is due to fly past our planet at a distance of about 511,000 miles, roughly twice the distance of the moon’s 238,900-mile orbit around our planet.

    Asteroids in our solar system are mostly found in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Occasionally, interactions with the gravity of the planets can cause an asteroid to be ejected from this reservoir, zooming into the inner solar system and in the vicinity of Earth.

    “Space is three dimensional—whilst there are a huge number of comets and asteroids out there, most of them move on orbits that don’t perfectly intersect with that of the Earth—even if they do cross where our orbit is in terms of the distance from the Sun, they usually pass harmlessly well above or below the Earth,” Jonti Horner, an astrophysics professor at Australia’s University of Southern Queensland, told Newsweek.

    Due to its proximity to the Earth, 2025 BS4 is classified as a near-Earth object (NEO), which are defined as objects that come within about 120 million miles of the sun, or 30 million miles of Earth.

    Objects and asteroids that come within around 4.6 million miles of the Earth and have a diameter of at least 460 feet.

    “A PHA is one that has an orbit intersecting the Earth’s orbit around the sun by less than 0.05 astronomical units (1 AU is the distance to the Sun), that’s just over 4.5 million miles,” Martin Barstow, a professor of astrophysics and space science at the University of Leicester in the U.K., previously told Newsweek.

    “It also has to have an absolute brightness of 22.0 or less (lower values of the magnitude are brighter = larger objects), i.e. an asteroid (or comet) that would cause significant regional damage if it hit the Earth,” he said. “Not all NEOs are potentially hazardous, but all hazardous objects are NEOs.”

    2025 BS4 is not large enough to be considered a PHA, however, so is only classified as an NEO. According to NASA, this asteroid has a 0.000013 chance of hitting us at any point in the future.

    There are several other NEO asteroids making close fly-bys of the Earth over the next few days, including the 100-foot 2025 BH2 passing at a distance of 4,280,000 miles today, the 36-foot 2025 BF5 coming within 797,000 miles of us tomorrow, and the 51-foot 2025 BS2 missing us by 2,330,000 on Wednesday.

  • Liftoff! NASA Sends Science, Tech to Moon on Firefly, SpaceX Flight


    A suite of NASA scientific investigations and technology demonstrations is on its way to our nearest celestial neighbor aboard a commercial spacecraft, where they will provide insights into the Moon’s environment and test technologies to support future astronauts landing safely on the lunar surface under the agency’s Artemis campaign.

    Carrying science and tech on Firefly Aerospace’s first CLPS or Commercial Lunar Payload Services flight for NASA, Blue Ghost Mission 1 launched at 1:11 a.m. EST aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Launch Complex 39A at the agency’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The company is targeting a lunar landing on Sunday, March 2.

    “This mission embodies the bold spirit of NASA’s Artemis campaign – a campaign driven by scientific exploration and discovery,” said NASA Deputy Administrator Pam Melroy. “Each flight we’re part of is vital step in the larger blueprint to establish a responsible, sustained human presence at the Moon, Mars, and beyond. Each scientific instrument and technology demonstration brings us closer to realizing our vision. Congratulations to the NASA, Firefly, and SpaceX teams on this successful launch.” 

    Once on the Moon, NASA will test and demonstrate lunar drilling technology, regolith (lunar rocks and soil) sample collection capabilities, global navigation satellite system abilities, radiation tolerant computing, and lunar dust mitigation methods. The data captured could also benefit humans on Earth by providing insights into how space weather and other cosmic forces impact our home planet.  

    “NASA leads the world in space exploration, and American companies are a critical part of bringing humanity back to the Moon,” said Nicola Fox, associate administrator, Science Mission Directorate, NASA Headquarters in Washington. “We learned many lessons during the Apollo Era which informed the technological and science demonstrations aboard Firefly’s Blue Ghost Mission 1 – ensuring the safety and health of our future science instruments, spacecraft, and, most importantly, our astronauts on the lunar surface. I am excited to see the incredible science and technological data Firefly’s Blue Ghost Mission 1 will deliver in the days to come.”

    As part of NASA’s modern lunar exploration activities, CLPS deliveries to the Moon will help humanity better understand planetary processes and evolution, search for water and other resources, and support long-term, sustainable human exploration of the Moon in preparation for the first human mission to Mars. 

    There are 10 NASA payloads flying on this flight:

    • Lunar Instrumentation for Subsurface Thermal Exploration with Rapidity (LISTER) will characterize heat flow from the interior of the Moon by measuring the thermal gradient and conductivity of the lunar subsurface. It will take several measurements to about a 10-foot final depth using pneumatic drilling technology with a custom heat flow needle instrument at its tip. Lead organization: Texas Tech University 
    • Lunar PlanetVac (LPV) is designed to collect regolith samples from the lunar surface using a burst of compressed gas to drive the regolith into a sample chamber for collection and analysis by various instruments. Additional instrumentation will then transmit the results back to Earth. Lead organization: Honeybee Robotics  
    • Next Generation Lunar Retroreflector (NGLR) serves as a target for lasers on Earth to precisely measure the distance between Earth and the Moon. The retroreflector that will fly on this mission could also collect data to understand various aspects of the lunar interior and address fundamental physics questions. Lead organization: University of Maryland
    • Regolith Adherence Characterization (RAC) will determine how lunar regolith sticks to a range of materials exposed to the Moon’s environment throughout the lunar day. The RAC instrument will measure accumulation rates of lunar regolith on the surfaces of several materials including solar cells, optical systems, coatings, and sensors through imaging to determine their ability to repel or shed lunar dust. The data captured will allow the industry to test, improve, and protect spacecraft, spacesuits, and habitats from abrasive regolith. Lead organization: Aegis Aerospace 
    • Radiation Tolerant Computer (RadPC) will demonstrate a computer that can recover from faults caused by ionizing radiation. Several RadPC prototypes have been tested aboard the International Space Station and Earth-orbiting satellites, but now will demonstrate the computer’s ability to withstand space radiation as it passes through Earth’s radiation belts, while in transit to the Moon, and on the lunar surface. Lead organization: Montana State University 
    • Electrodynamic Dust Shield (EDS) is an active dust mitigation technology that uses electric fields to move and prevent hazardous lunar dust accumulation on surfaces. The EDS technology is designed to lift, transport, and remove particles from surfaces with no moving parts. Multiple tests will demonstrate the feasibility of the self-cleaning glasses and thermal radiator surfaces on the Moon. In the event the surfaces do not receive dust during landing, EDS has the capability to re-dust itself using the same technology. Lead organization: NASA’s Kennedy Space Center 
    • Lunar Environment heliospheric X-ray Imager (LEXI) will capture a series of X-ray images to study the interaction of solar wind and the Earth’s magnetic field that drives geomagnetic disturbances and storms. Deployed and operated on the lunar surface, this instrument will provide the first global images showing the edge of Earth’s magnetic field for critical insights into how space weather and other cosmic forces surrounding our planet impact it. Lead organizations: NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, Boston University, and Johns Hopkins University 
    • Lunar Magnetotelluric Sounder (LMS) will characterize the structure and composition of the Moon’s mantle by measuring electric and magnetic fields. This investigation will help determine the Moon’s temperature structure and thermal evolution to understand how the Moon has cooled and chemically differentiated since it formed. Lead organization: Southwest Research Institute
    • Lunar GNSS Receiver Experiment (LuGRE) will demonstrate the possibility of acquiring and tracking signals from Global Navigation Satellite System constellations, specifically GPS and Galileo, during transit to the Moon, during lunar orbit, and on the lunar surface. If successful, LuGRE will be the first pathfinder for future lunar spacecraft to use existing Earth-based navigation constellations to autonomously and accurately estimate their position, velocity, and time. Lead organizations: NASA Goddard, Italian Space Agency
    • Stereo Camera for Lunar Plume-Surface Studies (SCALPSS) will use stereo imaging photogrammetry to capture the impact of rocket plume on lunar regolith as the lander descends on the Moon’s surface. The high-resolution stereo images will aid in creating models to predict lunar regolith erosion, which is an important task as bigger, heavier payloads are delivered to the Moon in close proximity to each other. This instrument also flew on Intuitive Machine’s first CLPS delivery. Lead organization: NASA’s Langley Research Center 

    “With 10 NASA science and technology instruments launching to the Moon, this is the largest CLPS delivery to date, and we are proud of the teams that have gotten us to this point,” said Chris Culbert, program manager for the Commercial Lunar Payload Services initiative at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston. “We will follow this latest CLPS delivery with more in 2025 and later years. American innovation and interest to the Moon continues to grow, and NASA has already awarded 11 CLPS deliveries and plans to continue to select two more flights per year.”

    Firefly’s Blue Ghost lander is targeted to land near a volcanic feature called Mons Latreille within Mare Crisium, a more than 300-mile-wide basin located in the northeast quadrant of the Moon’s near side. The NASA science on this flight will gather valuable scientific data studying Earth’s nearest neighbor and helping pave the way for the first Artemis astronauts to explore the lunar surface later this decade.

    Southwest Research Institute awarded $26 million contract from NASA


    SAN ANTONIO – One of San Antonio’s oldest nonprofit organizations is celebrating a big win for their space instruments.

    Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) was awarded a $26 million contract from NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), according to a statement from the organization.

    SwRi said the contract involves developing magnetometers for NOAA’s Space Weather Next Program.

    The instruments will be deployed on satellites that will orbit the sun at a stable point, giving scientists an uninterrupted view of the star, the statement said.

    These will measure the interplanetary magnetic field carried by the solar wind for two upcoming missions in 2029 and 2032.

    “The instruments provide critical data to NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center which issues forecasts, warnings and alerts that help mitigate space weather impacts,” said Dr. Roy Torbert, a program director in SwRI’s Earth, Oceans, and Space office at the University of New Hampshire (UNH) in Durham, N.H., and principal investigator of the magnetometer.

    He also explained what space weather means.

    “Space weather refers to the variable conditions on the Sun and in space that can influence the performance of technology we use on Earth, such as electrical power grids, and disrupt satellite-based communication and navigation systems,” Torbert stated.

    The magnetometers will be known as SW-MAG, and SwRI said they will work with UNH to develop, calibrate and evaluate the instruments.

    SwRI said NASA and NOAA will oversee the development, launch and testing of the satellites, providing funding and launch services as needed.
