#NASCAR #schedule #weekend #Clash #Bowman #Gray #kicks #Cup #Series #seasonDale Earnhardt Jr. fed up with NASCAR waivers, ‘Kyle Larson Rule’
NASCAR has passed a few new waiver rules heading into the 2025 season and one of the ones that has drawn the most scrutiny has already been dubbed the ‘Kyle Larson Rule.’
That rule? NASCAR has changed its playoff waiver policy.
The new policy will strip all of a driver’s playoff points for the 26-race regular season if they miss a race for non-medical or family reasons.
It’s been called the Kyle Larson Rule, in part, because the driver needed a waiver to make the playoffs last season after missing the Coca-Cola 600 while trying to pull the double with the Indianapolis 500.
There’s at least one man with a lot of say-so in NASCAR circles that isn’t a fan of the new waiver rule in the slightest.
“I hate putting that label on it, but look: I don’t like this waiver stuff,” Dale Earnhardt Jr. said on the Dale Jr. Download. “Like the original, the whole idea of it, I just don’t love it. Listen, I mean, I’m trying not to use any examples, but man if you’re injured and you’re out, you’re injured and you’re out. I don’t think there should be a medical waiver.
“I don’t think there should be any waiver whatsoever. You show up, you race, you get points. If you don’t race, you don’t start, you don’t get the points. You just don’t. So what is the argument against that? Why do we need the waiver at all?”
Some like the idea of drivers like Larson being able to compete across various driving disciplines. It certainly created a fun viewership experience for the fans, with the will-he-won’t-he-make-it drama creating a truly unique angle last year.
“I don’t love the optics of it,” Earnhardt said.
Earnhardt seemed at a loss for how to process that drivers could be given a pass without racing the full slate. He asked his co-hosts on the show for an explanation in defense of the new waiver rules.
He didn’t find any of them particularly satisfying.
“It had been a certain way for so many years and then now you can miss races due to an injury and still run for a championship,” Earnhardt said. “And I just never really like thought that was part of the deal. So I guess when I was asking you what the argument against it is, I was hoping you might say, ‘Well, an NFL quarterback can get injured, come back and then take his team to the championship’ and say OK, that’s kind of what it’s like.”
To Earnhardt, though, it’s just tough luck if you’re forced to miss significant time on the racing circuit. Even if you’ve accumulated enough points to otherwise qualify.
“In my mind the waiver is only to make sure your big stars are in the playoffs,” Earnhardt said. “And so if something were to happen, somebody gets hurt or some medical issue happens — I don’t know that I feel that great, I don’t know that I feel good about the medical pass, getting the free pass off of an injury.”
Dale Earnhardt Jr. has had enough of NASCAR’s waivers and the controversial “Kyle Larson Rule.” The retired NASCAR driver took to social media to express his frustration with the league’s inconsistent handling of penalties and waivers for certain drivers. In his post, Earnhardt Jr. criticized NASCAR for granting waivers to drivers like Larson, who was reinstated after using a racial slur during a virtual race last year. The “Kyle Larson Rule” allows drivers who have been suspended for disciplinary reasons to apply for a waiver to be eligible for competition again.
Earnhardt Jr. argued that NASCAR’s waivers undermine the integrity of the sport and send the wrong message to fans and sponsors. He called for a more transparent and consistent policy when it comes to disciplinary actions and reinstatements.
Fans and fellow drivers rallied behind Earnhardt Jr., agreeing that NASCAR needs to hold all drivers accountable for their actions and uphold the values of the sport. Many called for a reevaluation of the waiver system and a more stringent approach to enforcing penalties.
As the debate continues, it remains to be seen whether NASCAR will make any changes to its policies in response to the criticism from Earnhardt Jr. and others in the racing community. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

Defending Cup Series champion Joey Logano recently wrote on social media about his excitement for the 2025 season after his family trip to Florida this past week.
The Team Penske driver was seen enjoying an NBA game on January 12. He recently replied to a video of himself with his wife and three children at the NBA game between Orlando Magic and Philadelphia 76ers.
“Great trip to FL with the family. Excited to get the 2025 @NASCAR season underway,” Logano wrote.
Logano made an incredible comeback last season after he was nearly disqualified from the playoffs. The 34-year-old advanced to the next round at the Charlotte Roval after Alex Bowman was disqualified. Logano was the first driver to win his spot in the Championship 4 and had plenty of time to prepare for the season finale at Phoenix Raceway. He won his third Cup title from his teammate, Ryan Blaney and became only the 10th driver with three or more championships. Logano won the previous championships in 2018 and 2022.
The 2025 NASCAR season will start with “The Clash” at Bowman Gray Stadium on February 2. The first points race for the year will be held at the Daytona International Speedway.
Joey Logano announces 3rd ‘Concert For Charity’
Joey Logano runs a foundation that supports children and young adults in foster care and has donated over $6 million to help them. Logano started the foundation in 2013 and recently helped with disaster recovery with a $250,000 donation in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. Logano and Ford also gave two cars to people who lost theirs in the hurricane.
The Middletown, Connecticut native wrote about the 3rd annual charity concert on X:
“The ‘Joey Logano Concert For Charity’ is coming back for year 3! Mark your calendars and plan a fun night with us at @coyotejoes on Thursday, May 22nd. Stay tuned for more updates with Artist Announcements and when tickets will go for sale.”
Logano, who debuted in the Cup Series in 2008, will return for his 17th full-time season in the series in the No. 22 Ford Mustang Dark Horse with Paul Wolfe as crew chief. He has 36 wins in over 17 years.
Last year, Logano was criticized for receiving the Cup title after a poor regular season performance, where he had an average finish of 17.1. Some believed the current playoff system was unfair to other drivers who had better overall performances. Hendrick Motorsports‘ Kyle Larson dominated the 2024 season with six wins and most laps lead.

NASCAR champ Joey Logano’s close-calls mount at Daytona 500
NASCAR driver Joey Logano won his first Daytona 500 10 years ago but didn’t realize it would be his last trip to Victory Lane during his sport’s biggest race.
Every year pretty much since his 2015 win at age 24, Logano feels like he’s on the verge of his next one.
Joey Logano celebrates his victory at the 2015 Daytona 500. After all, he’s been right there more times than he’d care to count.
“I feel like it’s with a couple little things changing, we’re sitting here with four of them,” he recently told the Orlando Sentinel. “I get more frustrated than I do proud of being close.”
Logano once again should be in the thick of it Feb. 16 when the Daytona 500 kicks off the 2025 regular season.
The 34-year-old is coming off his third NASCAR Cup Series title, something just Jimmie Johnson and Tony Stewart have done since 2000 and only 10 drivers have accomplished in the sport’s history.
“It is really special but I’m still in the middle of it,” he said. “At some point I’ll look back and think, ‘Man, that’s really cool.’ But we’re far from being done.”
Logano, a 36-time Cup Series winner, could further cement his status among NASCAR’s elite with another Daytona 500 victory — something several iconic drivers including Stewart and Kyle Busch failed to accomplish even once.
Logano’s dogged pursuit comes a year after he won the pole for the first time and led a personal-best 45 laps before a massive 23-car crash ended his day on Lap 191.
A year earlier, he finished runner-up to Ricky Stenhouse Jr., who won a record 212-lap affair under caution after Logano at one point led during the final lap.
“[If] the caution came out a second-and-a-half before it did, we would have won the Daytona 500,” Logano said.
In 2021, Logano led Brad Keselowski entering the final lap but when Logano looked to hold off Keselowski, the two cars collided and Michael McDowell raced ahead for a stunning victory.
Joey Logano drives during the NASCAR All-Star auto race at North Wilkesboro Speedway in North Wilkesboro, N.C., Sunday, May 19, 2024. (AP Photo/Chuck Burton) During Denny Hamlin’s 2019 victory, Logano finished fourth when he felt McDowell, also driving a Ford Mustang, failed to give him a late-race push. McDowell later watched replays, spoke to Logano and Ford executives, and said he likely erred.
Add it to the list of close calls for Logano, who hopes his fortunes improve during a race he drove for the first time in 2009 when he crashed early and finished dead last in the 43rd spot.
Then a 19-year-old phenom driving for Joe Gibbs Racing, Logano won just twice in four seasons before he was dropped by Gibbs and landed with Roger Penske, another Hall of Fame owner.
“I needed that reality check to learn about myself, to learn how to prepare, to learn how to go to work,” said Logano, who enters his 17th Cup Series ready to work at again winning the race that continues to elude him — and consume him.
“There’s been quite a few times I’ve led the white-flag lap, but not the checkered-flag lap,” he recently told the Sentinel. “And that’s frustrating”
