  • Winter storms will paste the US with snow as cold grips the nation

    CNN
     —

An already active winter is about to shift into overdrive as a trio of storms over the weekend and into next week deliver snow to the Midwest, East and possibly as far south as the Gulf Coast.

It’s all happening because the coldest air of the season is working its way over most of the US. The Arctic air from Siberia will even reach southern areas usually spared from such bitter cold.

Forecasts for two of the three upcoming winter storms are tricky and more uncertain than usual. But the forecast for the first storm is clear cut.

It will drop a mix of rain and 1 to 3 inches of snow over parts of the Midwest and Interior Northeast Saturday before it exits by Sunday morning. It will impact cities including Indianapolis, Detroit and Cleveland Saturday morning before bringing the same mix of snow and rain into the interior Northeast by the afternoon.

Another, potentially more potent storm will form in the central Appalachians as soon as the last one departs. It will strengthen quickly while spreading wintry slop over the mid-Atlantic and into southern New York and southern New England Sunday afternoon. Precipitation will spread north through the remainder of New York and New England over the rest of Sunday. Snow will fall in more inland locations while rain mixes in with the snow at times closer to the coast.

Exactly how much snow piles up Sunday, particularly in the heavily populated and highly traveled Interstate-95 corridor, depends on how close to the coast the storm travels.

Current forecasts show it staying just off the coast as it moves north through Sunday night which could bring widespread amounts of 1 to 3 inches of snow from Washington, DC, north to New England. Higher amounts of 3 to 6 inches are more likely just west of the I-95 corridor.

If the storm tracks closer to the coast than currently expected, it could tap into additional moisture and snow amounts could increase by a few inches — even for areas closer to the coast like New York City and Boston.

The storm will wrap up by Monday morning everywhere except far northern New England. The coldest air of the season and breezy conditions will arrive in its wake. Temperatures Monday from New England to the Southeast will be anywhere from 15 to just over 30 degrees below normal for what’s already the coldest time of the year.

Temperatures in Washington, DC, will drop into the teens Sunday night and will be stuck in the 20s Monday, so whatever snow falls Sunday will stick around for the coldest Inauguration Day in 40 years. Fresh snow on the ground, bitterly cold air and wind gusts to 30 mph at times will generate wind chills — what the air feels like when combined with wind — in the single digits for the entire day.

Confidence is growing in another round of winter weather in the South next week after snow and ice brought the region to a standstill last week.

This southern storm could develop much farther south than the last. Normally, a storm like this would bring rain to the Gulf Coast’s I-10 corridor, but the intense cold spreading over the country will open the door for winter weather there.

A wintry mix could begin in central Texas as early as Monday evening and increase in coverage and intensity by Tuesday morning. Some snow, sleet and freezing rain could expand east throughout Tuesday along the I-10 corridor and potentially farther north into more of the Southeast — possibly including northern Florida — overnight.

CNN Digital Tracker Winter Storm Precip Accum Euro Track Test 011725 euro1.png
CNN Digital Tracker Winter Storm Precip Accum Euro Track Test gfs1 011725.png

Forecast models differ on the location, type and amount of wintry precipitation along the Gulf Coast next week. The ECMWF (left) forecast keeps precipitation centered on the I-10 corridor because it models the storm track farther south than the GFS forecast (right). The GFS forecast spreads wintry precipitation to more of the Southeast.
    CNN Weather

Almost every element of the forecast — timing, location, precipitation type and intensity — is soaked in uncertainty and won’t be settled until the exact track of the storm is locked into by forecast models over the weekend.

It’s hard to overstate how rare accumulating snow is in the Deep South, particularly along the Gulf Coast. So even a small chance of snow or ice is significant for the region.

Measurable snow has only happened a dozen times at Houston’s Hobby Airport since 1932 and eight times since 1948 in New Orleans and 1940 in Tallahassee, Florida. All three locations have a chance at it next week.

Winter storms are set to wallop the United States with heavy snowfall as bone-chilling temperatures grip the nation. The forecast is calling for a significant amount of snow to blanket various regions, causing travel disruptions and potentially hazardous conditions. As the cold front moves in, residents are urged to stay indoors and take necessary precautions to stay safe and warm. Stay tuned for updates on this developing weather situation. #WinterStorms #Snowfall #ColdWeather #StaySafe

  • HBCU holds its own against No. 1 hoops team in the nation

HBCU holds its own against No. 1 hoops team in the nation

    Courtesy of Norfolk State Athletics

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Norfolk State men’s basketball team held its own for 40 minutes against the top-ranked team in the nation on Tuesday afternoon, as the HBCU fell 67-52 to the No. 1 Tennessee Volunteers at the Food City Center.

Christian Ings led the Spartans (9-7) with 19 points and four assists, while Brian Moore Jr. added 18 points and five rebounds.  Fifth-year guard Chaz Lanier paced the Tennessee Volunteers (13-0) with 24 points, including six 3-pointers.

Tennessee scored the game’s first five points, but a pair of jumpers from Moore and Jalen Myers helped the Spartans stay within reach. The Volunteers began to gain separation with multiple successful 3-point attempts, but Kuluel Mading responded with back-to-back baskets in the paint.

Moore scored on consecutive possessions to trim Tennessee’s advantage to 18-12. The Volunteers moved the gap to double digits soon after, as Lanier started to heat up.

Straying away from his typical mid-range dominance, Moore helped the Spartans stay afloat with a timely 3-pointer on a fast break opportunity. Ings converted with touch through contact a couple of minutes later, knocking down the ensuing free throw.

Waiting for the clock to wind down for a last-second opportunity, Ings got a floater off the glass to fall at the buzzer, sending Norfolk State into halftime trailing 35-28.

Tennessee’s Zakai Zeigler knocked down a 3-pointer to get the home team started in the second half, but Ings and Jaylani Darden got the Spartans back within single digits with a pair of inside field goals.

The Volunteers boosted the gap back to double digits, holding that cushion over the HBCU hoops team for the rest of the afternoon. Norfolk State refused to fall out of the game, keeping things interesting by attacking the rim offensively while remaining staunch on the defensive end.

A pair of dunks by Tennessee’s Cade Phillips and Jordan Gainey gave the Volunteers a 60-44 lead with 5:18 to play. UT earned its largest advantage of the game – a 20-point cushion – after a 3-pointer from Lanier in the final three minutes.

The HBCU hoops squad continued to battle to the final whistle. Moore made two jumpers in the final minute of regulation, but the Spartans could not pull back within single digits of the heavyweight Volunteers.

  • Andrew Carr introduces his fiancée to Big Blue Nation in a heartwarming moment

Andrew Carr introduces his fiancée to Big Blue Nation in a heartwarming moment

Andrew Carr took advantage of the trip to New York City to make his longtime girlfriend his fiancee. He actually wasn’t the only Wildcat basketball player to do so, as Collin Chandler also got engaged to his girlfriend in the Big Apple. After the Brown game, Genevieve – Carr’s fiancee, was standing off to the side as he was being interviewed, and Mark Pope encouraged him to introduce her to Big Blue Nation. In a very wholesome moment, Carr is beaming as he introduces Genevieve.

She was already a part of Big Blue Nation, rooting on her boyfriend and now her future husband, but Pope and Carr wanted you to meet her. It may have been the biggest smile Kentucky fans have ever seen from Carr. He’s normally a happy player, but bringing his future wife up puts a rare glimmer into his smile.

Carr was also asked about his sister transferring to Kentucky and was thrilled by the reality of Lizzie coming to play volleyball for the Wildcats.

“You know it’s awesome…I fell in love with BBN and being able to shed some light on that for my sister. She was able to make her own decision to come here. She’s super excited to be able to be here in January. Carrs are Wildcats forever now. “

    Andrew Carr

Carr had a great game today against Brown and maybe all the good news that’s happening in his life is really helping take his game to the next level or turn on an extra gear. He had 14 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, and 3 steals. An absolute stat-stuffing appearance by Carr.

In an interview with BBN Tonight, Carr talked about turning the corner and heading into conference play. “I just love playing with this team… I think the cool part is we’re not done getting better… we’ve done a great job this year of continuing to learn from our mistakes.” Watch the full interview below:

Great end to 2024 for Andrew Carr, here’s to a huge year for him in 2025!

Last night was a special night for Andrew Carr as he introduced his fiancée to the Big Blue Nation for the first time. The crowd erupted in cheers as the couple made their way to their seats, surrounded by friends and family.

As the game went on, Andrew couldn’t help but sneak glances at his fiancée, watching her cheer on the Wildcats with enthusiasm. The love and support between them was palpable, and it was clear that they were meant to be together.

At halftime, Andrew stood up and took the microphone, his voice filled with emotion as he spoke about his fiancée and how grateful he was to have her by his side. The crowd erupted in applause, showing their support for the happy couple.

It was a heartwarming moment that reminded everyone in the arena of the power of love and the importance of sharing special moments with those we care about. And as the final buzzer sounded and the Wildcats secured a victory, Andrew and his fiancée stood together, united in their love and their shared passion for the Big Blue Nation.

Welcome to “Good Morning, Illini Nation,” your daily dose of college basketball news from Illini beat writer and AP Top 25 voter Scott Richey. He’ll offer up insights every morning on Brad Underwood’s team and college basketball at large:

Illinois will play its final buy game of the 2024-25 season Sunday against Chicago State. While Illini coach Brad Underwood has expressed a desire to play more marquee games — a full round robin in the Big Ten works for him — the sport isn’t at that level just yet. So buy games remain on the schedule.

So what does Underwood try to get out of a game like Sunday’s? What is he looking for in a game where his team is projected as a 40 1/2-point favorite by the metrics?

“I think that you always try to find a little bit of a balance in your non-league. There’s been no doubt we’ve obviously tried to play some of those games regionally to help those teams in terms of there’s no doubt there’s a guarantee involved. I also know that Chicago State is really well coached. That was a good basketball team. That was a basketball team last year that beat Northwestern.

“I hope it’s an opportunity for us to work on a few things after the break and refine. Mostly, an important step for us is to take the momentum from the Missouri win and keep building on that. We still make too many mistakes. We have to eliminate those. We can’t worry about who we play, whether it’s league, non-league, Braggin’ Rights game, Arkansas, whoever. We have to go out and do our job, and that’s our challenge every single game is to get better every single day.”

Good morning, Illini Nation! Today marks the last buy game of the season for our beloved Fighting Illini basketball team. As we prepare to take on a lesser-known opponent, let’s show our support and cheer on our boys as they aim to finish the non-conference schedule strong.

Buy games are often seen as tune-ups for the tougher conference matchups ahead, but that doesn’t mean we should take them lightly. Every game is an opportunity for our players to improve, build chemistry, and gain confidence.

So let’s pack the arena, wear our orange and blue proudly, and show the team that we are behind them no matter the opponent. Let’s make some noise, create a home-court advantage, and help propel our Fighting Illini to victory.

As the season progresses, let’s continue to show our unwavering support for our team. Win or lose, we are always proud to be a part of Illini Nation. Let’s make this last buy game one to remember!

  • Trump’s nominee to run Pentagon hangs by a thread | Nation

Trump’s nominee to run Pentagon hangs by a thread | Nation

US President-elect Donald Trump’s nomination of TV host Pete Hegseth to run the Defense Department appeared to be on life support Wednesday as Republican senators questioned his fitness for the powerful role.

Hegseth, a former Army National Guard officer and Fox News presenter, is under intense pressure over a series of misconduct allegations, including accusations of drunken behavior and a sexual assault claim from 2017, over which no charges were filed.

Hegseth denies wrongdoing but the controversy has left Trump’s transition officials scrambling to avoid the embarrassment of a second Cabinet nomination collapsing amid dwindling support from Republicans in Congress.

Running the Pentagon is one of the biggest roles in public office. The Defense Department employs almost three million military and civilian staff, and spending — including veterans’ care — topped $1 trillion in the 2023 fiscal year.

“I’m doing this for the warfighters, not the warmongers. The Left is afraid of disrupters and change agents,” Hegseth posted on social media, accusing the press of smearing him and vowing to “never back down.”

He told CBS as he arrived for a second day of meetings with senators on Capitol Hill that Trump told him to “keep going, keep fighting.”

However, up to six Senate Republicans — including South Carolina’s Lindsey Graham, one of Trump’s staunchest allies on Capitol Hill — have voiced doubts over Hegseth’s confirmation, according to NBC and ABC.

The questions around his character deepened as an old email emerged in which Hegseth’s own mother called him an “abuser of women,” although she subsequently disavowed the criticism, which she said had been made “in haste.”

    – ‘Very disturbing’ –

But Graham told CBS News the allegations emerging from Hegseth’s past were “very disturbing.”

“He obviously has a chance to defend himself here, but some of this stuff is going to be difficult,” Graham told CBS.

Trump’s nominees can afford to lose the support of only three Republicans at their January Senate confirmation hearings, assuming all Democrats vote against them.

US media have floated various alternatives to Hegseth, with Trump said to be mulling one-time Republican primary rival and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

The move would raise eyebrows in Washington, as the pair had only the most perfunctory of reconciliations after a bitter presidential nomination battle that left both bruised, although the governor did endorse Trump after dropping out.

On what was being seen as a day of reckoning, Hegseth’s schedule included sit-downs with the incoming Republican Senate leader and Armed Services Committee chairman.

He told reporters in Congress the process had been “wonderful” and revealed that Trump had tasked him with bringing a “warfighting ethos” back to the Pentagon.

“Your job is to make sure that it’s lethality, lethality, lethality. Everything else is gone. Everything else that distracts from that shouldn’t be happening,” he said.

The 44-year-old had been expected to give an interview to Fox News but instead went on SiriusXM, where he denied having a drinking problem and accused unspecified enemies of inventing his misconduct because they see him as a “threat.”

Betting exchange Polymarket gave him an 83 percent probability of securing the Pentagon post when he was first announced three weeks ago but that has since dropped precipitously, to 12 percent.

Former Florida congressman Matt Gaetz, Trump’s first choice for attorney general, withdrew when he was on 30 percent amid his own sexual misconduct allegations.

The New Yorker piled the agony on Hegseth at the weekend, reporting that he was forced to quit roles running two non-profits over allegations of sexual misconduct, heavy drinking and mismanagement of funds.

As many as 10 former colleagues at Fox News have also voiced worries over Hegseth’s drinking, NBC News reported.

He is one of a number of Trump nominees facing uphill climbs to get through Senate confirmation to join a government set to feature at least three other figures who have denied past accusations of sexual misconduct, including Robert F. Kennedy and Elon Musk.

In a stunning turn of events, President Trump’s nominee to run the Pentagon, Anthony Tata, is hanging by a thread as his controversial past comes to light. Tata, a retired Army brigadier general and Fox News commentator, has come under fire for a history of inflammatory and offensive remarks on social media.

Critics have pointed to Tata’s Islamophobic and sexist tweets, as well as his past comments calling former President Barack Obama a “terrorist leader.” These remarks have raised serious concerns about his ability to lead the Department of Defense effectively and impartially.

Tata’s nomination is currently pending in the Senate, where several key lawmakers have expressed reservations about his fitness for the position. With a slim Republican majority in the Senate, Tata’s confirmation is far from certain.

As the controversy surrounding Tata continues to grow, it remains to be seen whether he will be able to weather the storm and secure the support needed to lead the Pentagon. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
