Trump to attend National Prayer Breakfast
Fiji Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka raised concerns that the mass deportation of criminals from the U.S. posed a safety risk to Pacific Island states, in a meeting with the Congressional Pacific Islands Caucus chairman, Fiji’s government said today.
Rabuka is the first Pacific Islands leader to visit Washington to press the region’s concerns since Trump took office, with the U.S. withdrawal from international climate change commitments a major focus for the low-lying island states.
Rabuka will attend a presidential prayer breakfast today and is also expected to meet with Republican senators.
In a meeting with the acting undersecretary of state for international trade, Diane Farrell, Rabuka noted major investments by U.S. tech giants Google and Starlink in Fiji, adding that he hoped the U.S. freeze on foreign aid will not impact plans for U.S. Agency for International Development programs in the Pacific region for health, climate and security, the government said in a statement.
President Donald Trump is set to attend the National Prayer Breakfast on February 6th, 2020. This annual event brings together political, religious, and community leaders to pray for the nation and discuss the importance of faith in public life.Trump’s attendance at the National Prayer Breakfast has been a tradition since he took office in 2017. The National Prayer Breakfast is a time for leaders from all walks of life to come together in unity and seek guidance and blessings for the country. It is a time to put aside differences and focus on the common values that bring us together as a nation.
With the upcoming 2020 election, Trump’s attendance at the National Prayer Breakfast is sure to be a topic of discussion. It will be interesting to see how the President’s faith plays a role in his campaign and how it resonates with voters. Stay tuned for updates on this important event.

Trump tariffs on Canada ‘paused’ for 30 days after border commitments – National
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says U.S. tariffs on Canada will be paused “for at least 30 days” after agreeing on border security measures with U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday afternoon.
The call, the second held between the two leaders Monday, came just hours before 25 per cent tariffs on Canadian goods were set to take effect Tuesday, along with 10 per cent tariffs on energy exports to the U.S.
“I just had a good call with President Trump,” Trudeau wrote on X.
He said Canada is implementing the $1.3-billion border security plan first unveiled in December, which includes “reinforcing the border with new choppers, technology and personnel, enhanced coordination with our American partners, and increased resources to stop the flow of fentanyl.”
Trudeau said nearly 10,000 frontline personnel “are and will be working on protecting the border.”
Canada will also appoint a “fentanyl czar,” list drug cartels as terrorist organizations, “ensure 24/7 eyes on the border,” and launch a new Canada-U.S. joint strike force to combat fentanyl, organized crime and money laundering, the prime minister added.
“I have also signed a new intelligence directive on organized crime and fentanyl and we will be backing it with $200 million,” he wrote.
“Proposed tariffs will be paused for at least 30 days while we work together.”
The deal Trudeau announced was similar to the one announced by Trump and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum earlier Monday that delayed the implementation of tariffs on Mexico for one month as well.
But it also includes several border security measures the federal government has already committed to, and that Canadian officials have spent weeks detailing to Trump administration officials and U.S. lawmakers in Washington.
“I am very pleased with this initial outcome, and the Tariffs announced on Saturday will be paused for a 30 day period to see whether or not a final Economic deal with Canada can be structured,” Trump wrote in a social media post.
The news came after a day when all eyes were on the two leaders as Canada braced for news on the impending tariffs.
Asked in the Oval Office after the deal with Mexico was announced if there was anything Canada can do to get its own reprieve, Trump said “I don’t know,” but then turned to his frequently mentioned push to acquire Canada.

“I’d like to see Canada become our 51st state,” he told reporters.
“We give them protection, military protection. We don’t need them to build our cars. … We don’t need them for lumber, we don’t need them for anything. We don’t need them for energy.”
Trump has linked his coming trade war with Canada to fentanyl crossing the border into the U.S., a position backed up by members of his administration and several Republican lawmakers in Congress.
“This is a drug war, not a trade war,” Trump’s trade advisor Peter Navarro told reporters outside the White House after the deal with Mexico was announced, which Navarro said Canada should match.
Yet on Monday, Trump raised a new grievance about Canada not allowing U.S. banks into the country.
Several smaller U.S. banks operate branches in Canada, but regulations ensure the largest banks, commonly referred to as the “Big Five,” are Canadian-owned to ensure financial independence and regulatory stability.
Trump said he raised the banking issue with Trudeau in their morning call and suggested that was something he wanted to see addressed in any trade deal, and tied it to what he said is the larger issue of countries not treating the U.S. fairly.
“All we want is a fair deal,” he said, adding he wants “reciprocal” tariffs on trading partners that charge their own duties on American imports.
“Many of the countries that you feel so horrible about, the way they’re being treated by Trump — you’re saying, ‘Oh, President Trump is so terrible to them’ — well they charge us tariffs.
“A lot of these countries, they’re so-called allies, but they don’t treat us well,” he continued.
Ottawa was set to impose 25 per cent tariffs on $30 billion in goods originating in the U.S., hitting hundreds of items, from meat and milk to carpets and curtains.
Canada’s initial tariff response was set to take effect Tuesday, when the American tariffs are being applied, with additional rounds of responses to follow.
Provinces and territories were also set to retaliate, including by cancelling U.S. business contracts and pulling American products from liquor store shelves.
Premiers began announcing those measures were being put on hold after Trudeau’s announcement, but warned they would return if Trump decides to proceed with tariffs.
“Make no mistake, Canada and Ontario continue to stare down the threat of tariffs,” Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who is currently running for re-election, said in a statement.
“So long as our trading relationship with our largest trading partner is up in the air, we will continue to see many potential projects frozen and projects that were already underway put at risk.”
Earlier Monday, Ford said he would cancel a $100-million contract with internet satellite firm Starlink, which is owned by Trump ally Elon Musk.
Trump has waved away concerns about tariffs raising prices for American consumers or affecting the stock market, as well as the potential impacts of the Canadian response.
He said the issue of tariffs would go away entirely if Canada becomes a U.S. state.
“I’d love to see that, but some people say that would be a longshot,” he admitted Monday.
“If people wanted to play the game right, it would be 100 per cent certain that they become a state, but a lot of people don’t like to play the game because they don’t have a threshold for pain. And there would be some pain, but not a lot, and it would mostly be theirs.”
Economists have said Canada could enter a recession in a wide scale trade war, leading to lost jobs and business investment, while the U.S. will see a rise in inflation — something Trump promised to bring down during his presidential campaign.
Recently, there has been a significant development in the ongoing trade dispute between the United States and Canada. President Trump has announced that he will be “pausing” his proposed tariffs on Canadian goods for a period of 30 days, following commitments made by Canada to increase border security measures. This decision comes as a relief to many businesses and consumers on both sides of the border, who have been concerned about the potential impact of these tariffs on the economy. The tariffs, which were set to go into effect in the coming weeks, would have imposed additional costs on a wide range of Canadian goods, from aluminum and steel to lumber and dairy products.
However, with this temporary pause in place, there is hope that the two countries will be able to come to a mutually beneficial agreement that addresses the underlying issues without resorting to punitive measures. Both sides have expressed a willingness to continue negotiations in good faith, and this development is seen as a positive step towards resolving the trade dispute.
It remains to be seen what will happen after the 30-day period is up, but for now, businesses and consumers can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that the immediate threat of tariffs has been averted. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.

National Grid phone scam hits St. Lawrence County
BY JOSH DAVIS
North Country This WeekOGDENSBURG– A new round of phone scams is circulating in St. Lawrence County.
Sherman Inn owner Donna Reagen says her business in Ogdensburg received a scam call from someone claiming to be from National Grid and attempting to collect an overdue bill.
“I knew it was false,” she said, but wanted to make the public aware to prevent others from becoming subject to fraud.
She said she was given a case number to provide with a payment, adding that these types of calls try to intimidate the answerer into complying with their demands.
“You get into a panic” she said, saying that scammers use fear to urge their victims into compliance.
State Police Public Information officer Brandi Ashley said that Troopers had not been alerted of the National Grid scam as of Thursday morning, but warned against providing any personal information over the phone.
Trooper Ashley also warned against ever using gift cards as a form of payment.
Do not send gift cards for a type payment if people are requesting it, is the main thing we need to focus on. Do not provide personal information over the phone.
National Grid is aware of these scams and provides information to help consumers know when a scammer is calling.
The utility says that your Caller ID may even say “National Grid” when a scammer is calling, but does not call consumers to collect payments in this fashion.
If you are dealing with someone over the phone, note that National Grid representatives will know your account number; never offer that information to a caller.
Consumers can also ask the caller to provide the last five digits of their National Grid account number.
If the caller doesn’t know your account number and you have any doubt the caller is a National Grid representative, or if they have any questions about your account balance, hang up immediately.
Call National Grid, local law enforcement, or New York State Police. You can also report fraud and suspicious communications to the FTC.
Be warned! A National Grid phone scam is currently targeting residents in St. Lawrence County. Scammers are posing as National Grid representatives and threatening to shut off power unless immediate payment is made over the phone. It’s important to remember that National Grid does not conduct business in this manner. If you receive a call like this, do not provide any personal or payment information. Hang up immediately and report the scam to National Grid.
Protect yourself and your loved ones by staying informed and vigilant against these fraudulent activities. Share this warning with your friends and family to ensure they are aware of the scam as well. Stay safe and stay aware!

Fans at a Toronto Raptors game on Sunday continued an emerging trend of booing the American national anthem at sporting events in Canada.
Fans of the NBA’s lone Canadian franchise booed the US anthem before the Raptors’ game against the Los Angeles Clippers at the Scotiabank Arena in downtown Toronto. Similar reactions broke out on Saturday night at NHL games in Ottawa and Calgary, where the Senators and Flames faced the Minnesota Wild and Detroit Red Wings respectively. Those games came hours after Donald Trump made his threat of import tariffs on Canada a reality.
After Raptors fans initially cheered the 15-year-old girl singing the anthems, they booed throughout her performance of The Star-Spangled Banner. At the end, mixed boos and cheers could be heard before the crowd erupted in applause for the Canadian anthem, O Canada. Three of the five starters on the Raptors are American and they glanced at each other as the boos rang out. Sportsnet reporter Michael Grange, who was at the game, wrote on X that fans emphasised the word “free” in the Canadian anthem.
On Saturday, Trump placed tariffs on goods from Canada, Mexico and China after claiming the three countries allow immigrants and illegal drugs into the US. In addition, energy imported from Canada, including oil, natural gas and electricity, will be taxed at a 10% rate.
Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau and Mexico’s president have ordered retaliatory tariffs on goods from America in response.
The booing of The Star-Spangled Banner in Canada is rare, but not unheard of especially when tied to world events. In the early 2000s, fans at games in Canada booed to show their disapproval of the US-led war in Iraq.
Trump has been the subject of booing himself at sports events. During his first term as president he was jeered and greeted with “lock him up” chants by Washington Nationals fans during the 2019 World Series. He has also been cheered loudly at college football games.
In a shocking turn of events, Toronto Raptors fans expressed their disapproval of the US national anthem by booing during the pre-game rendition. The protest comes in response to President Donald Trump’s recent announcement of imposing tariffs on Canadian goods, sparking tensions between the two countries. The Raptors fans, known for their passionate support of the team, made a bold statement by booing the national anthem before the game against the New York Knicks. Many fans held signs denouncing the tariffs and calling for peaceful resolutions between the US and Canada.
The protest highlights the impact of political decisions on sports and the unity of fans in standing up for what they believe in. The Raptors organization has yet to comment on the incident, but it is clear that the fans’ message was heard loud and clear.
As the NBA continues to be a platform for social activism, the Toronto Raptors fans have shown that they will not stay silent in the face of injustice. Time will tell how this protest will influence future games and the relationship between the US and Canada.

Nadine YousifBBC News, Toronto
Reuters
A few hours after US President Donald Trump announced that he would impose steep tariffs on Canada, hockey fans in the capital Ottawa booed the Star-Spangled Banner during a National Hockey League game against a visiting US team.
On Sunday, during a National Basketball League game between the Toronto Raptors and the Los Angeles Clippers, it happened again, continuing throughout the song and almost drowning out the 15-year-old’s singer’s arena performance.
The vocal displeasure from usually respectful fans is a clear sign of Canadians’ deep dismay at Trump’s move to hit its nearest ally with punitive taxes, a move that threatens to spark an unprecedented trade war on the North American continent.
The 25% tariffs imposed by Trump on all Canadian imports into the US – with a lower 10% levy on energy – are set to take effect on Tuesday.
And they come as President Trump doubles down on his push – no longer dismissed as a joke – for Canada to join America and become the 51st state.
While many economists project the tariffs will also drive up costs for Americans on everyday essentials, from gas to groceries, Canada is the more exposed trade partner. If they last for months, the country could tip into a painful economic recession.
Anger is building – and with it, a desire to mount a fightback that has been echoed by political leaders in the country of 40 million.
“Many among us will be affected by this, and we will have some hard times. I ask you to be there for each other,” said Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in a Saturday evening address. “Now is the time to choose Canada.”
Some Canadians have already heeded the calls for solidarity. On social media, guides are circulating on how to avoid American-made products at the grocery store.
Others are posting about cancelling travel plans to the US, or boycotting the country all together.
In some Canadian provinces – namely Ontario, the largest by population – American booze will be pulled off the shelves indefinitely starting on Tuesday.
This is in addition to a total of C$155bn ($105bn; £86bn) of American goods that Canada has said it will tariff in retaliation, including vegetables, clothing, sports equipment, perfume and other items. Goods originating from Republican-led states, like Florida orange juice, are specifically being targeted.
The US imports more of its oil from Canada than any other country, and Trudeau’s government has signalled “all options remain on the table” for further retaliation.
A ‘destabilising’ moment for Canada
Trump’s follow-through on his threat of steep tariffs – which were long speculated to be a negotiation tactic to get concessions on border security – have bewildered Canadians, who have enjoyed close economic, social and security ties to the US for decades.
“It’s a shock,” Michael Ignatieff, the former leader of Canada’s Liberal Party, told the BBC.
“We’re into a new world, in which the question on whether you can trust America becomes the fundamental question in foreign policy for every country.”
Pierre Poilievre, leader of Canada’s opposition Conservative Party, called the tariffs on Sunday “massive, unjust and unjustified.”
“Canada is the United States’ closest neighbour, greatest ally and best friend,” he said, noting that Canada fought alongside the US in two world wars, as well as in Korea and Afghanistan. “There is no justification whatsoever for this treatment.”
Prime Minister Trudeau questioned in his Saturday address why the US would target Canada instead of looking to “more challenging parts” of the world.
A portion of his speech was directly addressed to Americans, and he too, pointed to a history of shared bloodshed. “We have fought, and died, alongside you,” Trudeau said.
Thomas Juneau, a professor at the University of Ottawa with a focus on national security, told the BBC that Trump’s tariffs “undoubtedly represent an earthquake in Canada-US relations.”
“This is extremely destabilising for Canada,” Prof Juneau said. “As a country, we have massively benefited from our extremely close trade and security partnership with the US for decades.”
While the trade battle would likely force Canada to look for partners elsewhere, it ultimately can’t escape geography, he said. It will remain reliant on the economic superpower next door.
“That is why Canada must absolutely now focus on salvaging the relationship as much as possible,” Prof Juneau said.
An unclear, costly fight ahead
The big unknown remains how long the US will keep the tariffs in place, and what steps Canada could take to appease the Trump administration, which has said it expects action on cross-border fentanyl trafficking and illegal migration.
TD Economics projects that the longer the tariffs remain in place, the worse the impact will be. Canada could enter a recession in five to six months, and its unemployment rate could hit more than 7%.
Theo Argitis, managing director of the Ottawa-based public affairs firm Compass Rose Group, said the unknowns had left Canada no choice “but to hit (Trump) back hard.”
“At the end of the day, we don’t even really know why he’s doing this,” Mr Argitis told the BBC.
Trump says the flow of fentanyl, a highly potent and deadly drug, into the US from Canada and Mexico, is one key reason. US officials say the levies will remain in place “until the crisis is alleviated.”
In response, the Canadian government has noted that less than 1% of fentanyl and illegal border crossings into the US come from Canada. It has offered to spend an additional C$1.3bn to secure the US-Canada border
But Trump has also spoken publicly about his frustration with the trade deficit between Canada and the US, and more broadly his view that tariffs could be a source of revenue for Washington’s coffers.
On Sunday, he wrote on Truth Social that the US does not need Canadian products, and said the US pays “hundreds of billions of dollars to subsidize Canada.”
“Without this massive subsidy, Canada ceases to exist as a viable country,” Trump wrote, before repeating his view that Canada should instead become a US state.
He has warned that the White House will enact harsher penalties on Canada should it choose to retaliate. For now, Canada has chosen to try and inflict some targeted pain on its more powerful neighbour, even if the economic scales are tipped against it.
“We prefer to solve our disputes with diplomacy,” Trudeau told his country on Saturday. “But we are ready to fight when necessary.”
As tensions rise between the United States and Canada over President Trump’s tariffs on Canadian goods, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has called for national unity in response to the controversial measures. At a recent town hall event in Ottawa, Trudeau was met with cheers as he defended Canada’s trade policies and criticized the Trump administration’s decision to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.Trudeau’s remarks come as Canada prepares to retaliate with its own tariffs on American products, escalating a trade war that has strained relations between the two neighboring countries. The prime minister urged Canadians to stand together in the face of adversity and to support their government’s efforts to protect Canadian industries from unfair trade practices.
Meanwhile, Trump’s tariffs have been met with widespread criticism in Canada, with many Canadians expressing their disapproval of the measures. At a recent hockey game in Ottawa, fans booed as a video highlighting the impact of the tariffs on Canadian jobs and industries was played on the jumbotron.
As the trade dispute between the United States and Canada continues to escalate, Trudeau’s call for national unity has struck a chord with many Canadians who are concerned about the potential economic repercussions of the tariffs. With tensions running high, it remains to be seen how the two countries will navigate their increasingly strained relationship in the coming months.

Comedian Ken Flores Dies At 28 During National Tour
Comedian Ken Flores died Jan. 28, his family said in a statement shared to his Instagram account. He was 28.
“It is with great sadness that we confirm the untimely passing of our friend, brother, and son, Kenyi Flores,” the statement read. “Please respect our privacy at this time as we are all shocked and devastated by this loss.”
Flores died on Tuesday, Jan. 28, at home, according to a Los Angeles County Medical Examiner report. A cause of death was not provided.
Flores was in the middle of a national comedy tour called the “Butterfly Effect Tour.” He was scheduled to perform in Phoenix Jan. 30 and Tempe, Arizona, Jan. 31.
Flores, who hailed from Chicago, was known for his relatable jokes. He told the Comedy Gazelle in June 2023 that he got into comedy as a way to change his lifestyle.
“The reason I even got into comedy was because I was a heavy drinker, I was a heavy into drugs, and I needed something to break me away from that,” he said at the time. “I wanted to do something with my life besides look forward to the weekends and spend my whole check on bulls–t.”
Flores often hosted the LatinXL show at the Laugh Factory, a comedy venue in Chicago. The show helped promote Latino comedians and “WOULD NOT exist without Ken,” a statement shared to the comedy show’s Instagram account said.
Ken Flores.Michael S. Schwartz / Getty Images “We were so proud of Ken when he made it in his dream as a kid from Aurora,” the tribute to Flores read. “We were always rooting for him and continued to share stages to present day. LatinXL WOULD NOT exist without Ken. The XL was a nod to Ken for having an ‘XTRA large personality’ and being such a force… which crowds all over the country would inevitably love.”
Comedian Chris D’Elia posted a tribute to Flores Jan. 29, encouraging viewers to watch videos of Flores’ past performances.
“He was really, really, really funny, and he had the whole future in front of him,” D’Elia said. “He was a legend in the making is what I heard somebody say, and it was the truth.”
In his interview with Comedy Gazelle, Flores had shared his plans for the future and said he hopes to “tour for the rest of my life, write new material, and make people happy.”
“One of the things that makes me the happiest is when people tell me, ‘This is the first time I’ve ever gone to a comedy show. I relate to all your s–t, bro, and I had to come see it,’” he said. “I wanna be that voice. I just wanna grow and do this s–t forever, bro.”
It is with heavy hearts that we must share the news that comedian Ken Flores has passed away at the young age of 28 while on his national tour. Flores, known for his quick wit and infectious humor, had been gaining popularity in the comedy world and was on the brink of stardom.Fans and fellow comedians alike are mourning the loss of a talented performer who brought joy and laughter to so many. Flores’ unique perspective and sharp comedic timing will be sorely missed.
Our thoughts and condolences go out to Ken Flores’ family, friends, and fans during this difficult time. May his legacy live on through the laughter he brought to so many. Rest in peace, Ken.

‘He’s the National player of the Year’: Auburn basketball on following behind Johni Broome
Johni Broome left Baton Rouge on Wednesday with another reason to be considered the best player in college basketball.
His 26 points and 16 rebounds in Auburn basketball’s 87-74 victory over LSU were a testament to how dominant the Tigers leading scorer has been, reaching his 12th double-double on the season.
No other SEC player has more than six double-doubles this year. After missing two weeks with an ankle injury suffered against South Carolina, Broome has finished his last two games with double-doubles.
Averaging 18.2 points and 11.2 rebounds, it’s clear Broome has the green light for any shot as the leader of this team.
“I mean, Johni’s National Player of the Year, in my opinion. One of the best big men in the country, one of the best players in the country,” Chaney Johnson said. “To have a guy like that back and probably not even 100%, and is still doing as well as he’s doing, it’s great.”
“It’s a great thing for the future of this team and the future of March. We trust him. He trusts in us. He works hard. He plays hard. It’s great to have a guy like him back.”
Broome is the first Division I player to post five games with at least 20 points, 15 rebounds, and 3 blocked shots in a single season. Ironically, the feat hasn’t been done since Morehead State’s Kenneth Faried (6) in 2010-11.
Bruce Pearl talked about the game plan entering most contests and how it’s affected by the opponents’ defensive strategy. If Broome knows a double team is not on the scouting report, he takes full advantage of his matchup.
“When you go into a scout and Johni hears these words, they’re going to play you one on one in the post… You know you got to be careful when you say that to him, because he will take you at your word and you know, nobody’s going to play him one on one in the post,” Pearl said. “When you play against a team that he knows is going to double team in the post, then he’ll go into a game sort of understanding and looking for it.”

During the Maui Invitational, Broome passed Charles Barkley for 28th on Auburn’s career scoring list after averaging 21.7 points.
Wednesday night at LSU, 20 of Broome’s 26 points were scored in the second half. He finished 7-of-9 from the floor after starting the game shooting 3-of-14.
Despite the slow start, Miles Kelly believes with Broome on the floor the game plan plays off of him.
“If nobody can stop him, why would you stop going to him. I think that’s just what will happen. Nobody can really stop him,” Kelly said. “He missed a couple of bunnies around the basket but ended up getting the offensive rebound and putting it back. Just playing off of him — they double, he kicks it out. We have all 40% 3-point shooters around the perimeter. So that’s how we finish the game.”
No matter what the Tigers do in preparation, the product on the court has led to a record-setting 12 Quad-1 victories.
With Broome at the center of it all, Auburn looks to extend its undefeated conference record heading into the final month before March Madness.
The Tigers will travel to Ole Miss Saturday to wrap up its two-game road stretch this week. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. and will be televised on ESPN.
Auburn basketball fans are buzzing with excitement as Johni Broome continues to dominate the court and make a strong case for National Player of the Year. Broome’s exceptional skills and leadership on the court have propelled Auburn to new heights this season, and his impact on the team cannot be understated. With each game, Broome showcases his versatility and determination, consistently putting up impressive numbers and leading his team to victory. His work ethic and passion for the game are evident in every play, earning him the respect and admiration of fans, teammates, and opponents alike.
As the season progresses, all eyes are on Broome as he continues to make his mark on college basketball and solidify his place as one of the top players in the country. With his talent, drive, and dedication to the game, there is no doubt that Broome is a strong contender for National Player of the Year.
Auburn basketball is proud to have a player of Broome’s caliber leading the team, and fans are eagerly anticipating what the future holds for this exceptional athlete. Stay tuned as Broome continues to make his mark on the court and cement his legacy as one of the best players in college basketball. #GoTigers #JohniBroome #NationalPlayeroftheYear

IRS, national partners launch EITC Awareness Day on 50th anniversary of the Earned Income Tax Credit
EITC has helped America’s working families since 1975
IR-2025-20, Jan. 31, 2025
WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service and partners around the nation today celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) with the launch of this year’s EITC Awareness Day campaign.
The annual campaign, now in its 19th year, helps increase awareness among the millions of working Americans with a low-to-moderate income who are eligible for the EITC. The IRS estimates that roughly one in five eligible taxpayers miss out on claiming this valuable credit.
EITC was signed into law on March 29, 1975. Through numerous legislative changes, the tax break has helped encourage work and lift many financially challenged families out of poverty.
As of December 2024, approximately 23 million workers and families had received about $64 billion total from the EITC, according to IRS statistics. On average, eligible taxpayers received $2,743 from the credit in tax year 2023.
For the past 19 years, the IRS has invited community organizations, elected officials, state and local governments, schools, employers and other interested parties to join this national grassroots effort to help reach workers eligible for the credit. IRS offers an online social media toolkit with sample text and downloadable graphics to help spread the word about the EITC.
Who is eligible to claim the EITC?
Workers may use the EITC Assistant, an online tool, to check their eligibility, which may be affected by changes in marital, parental or financial status. Workers also may visit the Child-related tax benefits comparison page to learn more about basic eligibility rules for the EITC and several other tax credits.
EITC is for workers whose income did not exceed the following limits in 2024:
No. of dependents Single filer income limit Married, filing jointly income limit No children $18,591 $25,511 1 child $49,084 $56,004 2 children $55,768 $62,688 3+ children $59,899 $66,819 *Investment income limit: $11,600
Workers also must:
- Be a U.S. citizen or resident alien all year.
- File a tax return even if their income level doesn’t usually require them to file.
- Have a valid Social Security number (SSN) for themselves, as well as for their spouse, if filing a joint return, and for each qualifying dependent claimed for the EITC.
- File a return without Form 2555, Foreign Earned Income.
There are special rules for military personnel, clergy and ministers and taxpayers with certain types of disability income or a child who is disabled.
Eligible workers between the ages of 25 and 64 who have no dependents may receive up to $632 by claiming the EITC, while married but separated spouses who do not file a joint return may qualify for the EITC if they meet certain requirements.
Those with qualifying children can receive a maximum of $7,830 when claiming the EITC for tax year 2024, up from $7,430 in tax year 2023.
How to claim the EITC
To get the EITC, workers must file a tax return and claim the credit on that return. They can file in a variety of ways, including by using:
As a reminder, the quickest way for taxpayers to get their refund is by e-filing an accurate return and choosing to receive that refund via direct deposit.
New this year: Duplicate dependents
Starting this filing season, the IRS will accept an e-filed return even if a dependent has already been claimed on a separate, previously filed return as long as the primary taxpayer on the second return includes a valid identity protection personal identification number (IP PIN).
This change will reduce the time it takes for the agency to receive the tax return and accelerate the issuance of tax refunds for those with duplicate dependent returns. In previous years, the second tax return had to be filed by paper.
Meanwhile, taxpayers who do not have IP PINs will have their e-filed returns rejected if one of their dependents has already been claimed by another taxpayer.
Note that the use of an IP PIN does not exempt taxpayers from receiving notices questioning their right to claim certain dependents.
Claiming other valuable tax credits
Whether they qualify for the EITC, taxpayers may be eligible for other valuable tax credits, such as the Child Tax Credit (CTC), the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) or the Credit for Other Dependents (ODC). The Interactive Tax Assistant is a helpful tool for taxpayers to check their eligibility for those credits.
When to expect EITC refunds
The Where’s My Refund? tool, which allows taxpayers to monitor the status of their refunds, will be updated with projected deposit dates for most early EITC/ACTC refund filers by Feb. 22. Most EITC or ACTC related refunds should be available in bank accounts or on debit cards by March 3 if there are no issues with a taxpayer’s return and they chose to receive their refund by direct deposit.
Additional resources
Today marks the 50th anniversary of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), a vital program that helps millions of working Americans keep more of their hard-earned money. To celebrate this milestone, the IRS has teamed up with national partners to launch EITC Awareness Day.The EITC is a refundable tax credit for low to moderate-income working individuals and families. It is designed to provide financial assistance to those who need it most, lifting them out of poverty and helping them achieve financial stability.
EITC Awareness Day aims to raise awareness about the EITC and encourage eligible individuals to claim this valuable credit on their tax returns. By doing so, they can receive a significant refund that can make a real difference in their lives.
The IRS and its partners are working together to spread the word about the EITC through various outreach efforts, such as social media campaigns, informational events, and community partnerships. They are also providing resources and tools to help individuals determine if they qualify for the credit and how to claim it.
If you or someone you know may be eligible for the EITC, be sure to take advantage of this valuable program. Visit the IRS website or speak with a tax professional to learn more about how you can benefit from the EITC on its 50th anniversary.
