What’s being said nationally ahead of Lions’ playoff game vs. Commanders
The Lions are the Super Bowl favorites. They’re one of eight teams left in the NFL playoffs. And they’ve been off for a week thanks to their first-round playoff bye.
So there’s plenty to say about the Lions and their divisional matchup on Saturday night against the Washington Commanders at Ford Field.
Here’s a sampling of what’s being said nationally:
Lions host Commanders on Saturday night as NFC’s top-seeded team for 1st time in franchise history – The Associated Press
Commanders-Lions matchup preview: Washington’s margins are thin – Washington Post

“I think that’s the one thing Detroit has struggled with, quarterbacks that scramble. You look at Detroit, they’re top 10 in pretty much everything on the defensive side of the ball, it’s hard to pick Detroit apart on the defensive side, Aaron Glenn has been fantastic with the injuries they’ve had, they’re really good.” – Former NFL linebacker Luke Kuechly, Up & Adams
“The Detroit Lions need to win more than anybody. If they lost this game, that would be the most heartbreaking playoff loss, because they haven’t won a championship since 1957. To lose at home to arguably the worst team in the field, that would be terrible.” – Andrew Perloff, SiriusXM
“I was more nervous before Dan Campbell’s press conference. Just recently, he said ‘You guys have a hard time against mobile quarterbacks.’ And he was like ‘Who doesn’t? Who doesn’t have a hard time against mobile quarterbacks?’ Which means to me that he’s not fretting about it.” – Keegan-Michael Key, Good Morning Football
“It’s going to be a challenge, because it has to be contain, contain, contain, and some of the things (Jayden Daniels) does you can’t simulate. They’re going to have to put a receiver or a DB at quarterback just to give you an idea of the kind of speed that you’re going to be dealing with at the quarterback position. People have had success stopping him, but not a lot.” – Richard Sherman, the Richard Sherman Podcast
“You talk about some of these quarterbacks and some of these teams, When you come into the season with such high expectations, there’s a pressure that comes along with that. For the Commanders, you don’t have that.” – Former NFL player Devin McCourty, Get Up
“What happens if they show Ben Johnson on the sideline? Is Tom Brady, minority owner of the Raiders, allowed to talk about Ben Johnson? Does he have any inside info, which I believe he would. – Dan Patrick
“Detroit’s defense, I don’t know if they can hold up, but the way they dominated (Sam) Darnold two weeks ago, it was extraordinary. It was extraordinary. I’m never counting out Aaron Glenn. He’s showed me something. He’s showed me that he’s an elite coach and competitor.” – Cowboys LB Micah Parsons, The Edge

As the Detroit Lions gear up for their playoff game against the Washington Commanders, the national media is buzzing with anticipation and predictions for the matchup. Some analysts are pointing to the Lions’ strong defense, led by star pass rusher Trey Flowers, as a key factor in their success this season. Others are highlighting the dynamic duo of quarterback Jared Goff and wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown as a potent offensive threat that could give the Commanders’ defense trouble.
On the flip side, some experts are questioning the Commanders’ ability to contain the Lions’ high-powered offense, especially with their secondary struggling in recent games. They are also highlighting the Commanders’ inconsistent play on offense, particularly with quarterback Taylor Heinicke’s up-and-down performances.
Overall, the consensus seems to be that this playoff game will be a closely contested battle between two teams hungry for a postseason victory.
