  • How the Eagles found their identity – NBC Sports Philadelphia

Throughout the season, head coach Nick Sirianni has been taking the opportunity during team meetings to show video clips of plays that embody the Eagles’ physicality.

All-Pro linebacker Zack Baun has a favorite.

“The Cooper DeJean on Derrick Henry, for sure,” Baun said. “That’s the epitome of who we’re trying to be and what we’re trying to do.”

Back in Week 13, the Eagles’ rookie nickel cornerback forcefully slammed the 250-pound running back into the turf in Baltimore. It didn’t matter that Henry out-weighed DeJean by 50 pounds, it didn’t matter that DeJean was a rookie, it didn’t matter that he’s a corner.

DeJean still delivered a highlight-worthy hit.

“When you talk about physicality, you think about defensive line and offensive line and running backs and linebackers,” Baun explained. “But when you got DBs doing stuff like that, it sends a message to the team. You see (Darius) Slay getting in there, you see Quinyon (Mitchell) up at the line of scrimmage, Reed (Blankenship is) coming and flying downhill. It’s awesome to see.”

The Eagles’ physicality this season stands out. Early in the year, the team was looking for an identity and they found it. On offense and defense, these Eagles are going to hit you in the mouth. When you play them, you’re going to feel it on the field and the next day.

    This team is a bully.

“We are a physical, nasty group of motherf—ers,” Sirianni said to his team in the locker room after their 22-10 win over the Packers in the wild-card round.

Obviously, being a tough and physical team starts with having tough and physical players. For that, general manager Howie Roseman and his staff deserve credit. The Eagles have been looking for a type and Roseman has delivered.

But the Eagles’ insistence on physicality goes beyond the player acquisition phase. There has been a preoccupation with physicality and the added emphasis from the coaching staff hammers home the mission. There’s a reason why Sirianni wants the entire team to sit down and watch these types of physical plays on tape.

“Yeah, we talk about a tough football team,” Sirianni said this week. “What we talk about with tough is the physical part of the game, the blocking, the block destruction, the tackling within the fundamentals. We talk about relentless effort to the football, because that’s a form of toughness. And we talk about mental toughness of being able to play the next play.

“Obviously, my best experience with being good at those things is because of, exactly what you said, the guys that are in this building. But any time as a coach that you’re trying to reinforce things that you really admire and want for the program and for the culture, you enforce those things on tape. So in our tape today and in our tape every day, to be quite frank – we talk about this every day and every time we have a team meeting, we talk about it.

“We will put our physical plays up there. We will put our relentless effort plays up there. We will put our mental toughness plays up there to reinforce it, good, bad. Just so it’s always on our mind. So, yeah, can’t say enough of how tough our team is, in all three of those phases: physical, mental and effort.”

You can argue the Eagles’ transformation to being this physically-imposing team happened as they came back from the early Week 5 bye. That’s at least when the offense really began to step on the necks of defenses.

After a 2-2 start, a few offensive linemen went to Sirianni and asked for the offense to lean on them, Saquon Barkley and the run game. Since then, the Eagles have had one of the best rushing attacks in football and Barkley went over the 2,000-yard mark. They get to impose their will every game and it obviously takes physicality to do that.

“When you’re able to do that, yeah, you can wear down defenders,” Lane Johnson said. “Sometimes it doesn’t work immediately but as the game goes on, you can see some huge chunks, some huge games in the run game from guys getting tired, worn down or missing assignments. It basically wears them down.”

Dallas Goedert, when asked about the physicality of the team, immediately pointed at the O-line and said pretty much all five of those guys have ended up making a play that gets shown to the entire team. Jordan Mailata made a block on the front of an inside zone run last week that stood out to him. And then there’s big Mekhi Becton punishing linebackers a the second level. And Johnson, Landon Dickerson and Cam Jurgens have all made those types of plays in their Pro Bowl seasons.

The Eagles’ physicality doesn’t end with their linemen.

“I think it starts there,” said Goedert, who had a beastly play last week with a few stiff-arms on his way into the end zone. “And I think the offensive line also loves when somebody else is doing it. Smitty (DeVonta Smith), he’s excellent at finishing on the sidelines. Saquon with his powerful runs. I think that’s really contagious when people play physical.”

The cool thing is that there are a bunch of those types of plays this season and everyone seems to have a favorite.

While DeJean’s hit on Henry from the Ravens game might top the list, DeJean said his favorite actually came against the Packers last week when Nolan Smith took on pulling tackle Elgton Jenkins and Nakobe Dean played the insert block to stop the Packers for a short gain.

DeJean liked that one so much because it wasn’t just one guy being physical. It was a group effort.

As long as the Eagles make these types of plays, Sirianni is going to show them in front of the entire team. And as long as Sirianni shows them in front of the entire team, players are going to keep trying to make them.

“Everybody gets pretty excited when we see those plays,” DeJean said. “You can really see with the guys we have in the building that that’s how everybody wants to play the game. To be the most physical team on the field. That’s something that’s been talked about since training camp.”

The Philadelphia Eagles have had a rollercoaster of a season, with ups and downs that left fans wondering if they could find their groove. However, in a recent article on NBC Sports Philadelphia, it was revealed how the Eagles were able to find their identity and turn their season around.

After a string of tough losses and injuries to key players, the Eagles were faced with the challenge of redefining themselves and finding a way to come together as a team. With the help of their coaching staff and leaders on the team, they were able to identify their strengths and weaknesses, and make the necessary adjustments to get back on track.

One key factor in the Eagles’ turnaround was their commitment to playing as a cohesive unit and supporting each other through the tough times. By focusing on their team chemistry and working together towards a common goal, they were able to build trust and confidence in each other, leading to improved performance on the field.

Additionally, the Eagles were able to find success by staying true to their identity as a physical, hard-nosed football team. They emphasized their strengths in the running game and on defense, which allowed them to control the tempo of the game and dictate play on their terms.

Overall, the Eagles’ journey to finding their identity was a testament to their resilience and determination. Through hard work, teamwork, and a commitment to their strengths, they were able to overcome adversity and emerge stronger than ever. With this newfound identity, the Eagles are now poised to make a run in the playoffs and show the rest of the league what they’re truly capable of.

  • Track the snow, latest weather – NBC Boston

The snowstorm that will hit Massachusetts Sunday night takes shape as a coastal low that tracks near the benchmark.

The benchmark is at 40/70 on coordinates on a map, where we can pinpoint the severity of a storm and how big of an impact it will have in the Northeast.

This storm is pretty quick-moving, so this is a moderate to high impact storm in terms of snowfall, without the coastal flooding or widespread wind damage.

    NBC10 Boston

See winter storm warnings in your area here and track the storm with live radar here:

Winter storm timing and snow totals:

The entire day remains dry, with some clouds and pretty calm conditions. But late afternoon, the storm strengthens off the Carolina coast and heads northeast.

By 2 p.m., a few snow showers move into Connecticut.

As the low strengthens and passes by offshore Sunday evening, it swings in more wind and snow.

Boston’s main snow event looks to be from 6 p.m. to 3 a.m. Monday.

The coastal front sets up across Cape Ann, Boston and Providence, and that means the Cape sees all rain Sunday evening, while northwest of Interstate 495, it’s all snow. That rain/snow line then moves southeast overnight.

The back half of the storm is where we get the coating to 2 inches of snow for the Cape & Islands with slush.

Meanwhile in Boston, we see steady snowfall for several hours and for areas inland Sunday night.

Snow rates will reach as high as 1-2 inches per hour across New England.

By Monday morning, we plow out of 4-8 inches of snow in Boston, and some areas will pick up 8 inches of snow north and west of Route 128 based on fluffier snow consistency inland.

The latest expected snowfall totals across the Greater Boston area — the city is forecast for 4-8 inches, while the Merrimack Valley and other parts could get 10 inches.

    NBC10 Boston

The latest expected snowfall totals across the Greater Boston area — the city is forecast for 4-8 inches, while the Merrimack Valley and other parts could get 10 inches.

The storm tapers and moves away early Monday morning. This leads to more arctic air and highs in the 20s by afternoon.

Temperatures will crash down as early as midnight in Boston, to the teens by sunrise Monday. Watch for icy roads and quick snow accumulations then.

    Wind and coastal impacts:

As is typical with an offshore low, we have a period of northeast wind gusts from 4 p.m. to midnight.

The pressure center lowers enough for gusts up to 30-40 mph at the coast, with inland spots up to 20 mph overnight Sunday. While this isn’t quite damaging wind, it will be a nuisance wind on top of period of heavy snow.

Massachusetts road crews started preparing a day early for the winter storm expected to bring 4-8 inches of snow to the Boston area, says Jonathan Gulliver, MassDOT’s highway administrator.

The wind turns more north, northwest from midnight to sunrise Monday, with gusts 40-45 mph across Cape Cod.

The shoreline will see some erosion on beaches when waves increase Monday morning as the low departs to the Canadian Maritimes. No coastal flooding is expected since tides are astronomically low.

    10-day weather outlook:

Prepare for some wicked cold after the storm leaves.

The coldest air in two years creeps in Monday, with highs in the 20s, but there’s more.

Highs fall to the teens Tuesday and Wednesday, with lows around zero in southern New England. Wind chills are expected to be below zero Tuesday through Thursday.

We modify temps later next week as nearby storm systems bring in some precipitation chances to the northeast.

  • A.J. Brown gets a reminder of the scope of his influence – NBC Sports Philadelphia

A.J. Brown sometimes forgets just how much influence he has, but the superstar receiver got a reminder this week.

After a FOX camera caught him reading “Inner Excellence” by Jim Murphy during the wild-card win over the Packers, the book catapulted into an overnight success and quickly became the top-selling book on Amazon.

“Me personally, I’m very humble,” Brown said. “Sometimes I forget who I am in a sense of how big stuff can get blown out of proportion. Because to me, I’m just being myself. I’m not trying to cause a distraction or stuff like that. But hats off to Jim. I talked to him. He’s a great guy and the book is amazing. For all who bought the book, you should check it out.”

While there have been plenty of positive reactions about Brown’s reading a book on the sideline, there have been some negative too. On his weekly radio hit on 94WIP, head coach Nick Sirianni said it was “lazy” for some to jump to conclusions about Brown’s reasons for reading on the sideline.

Brown said he does it to put his mind at peace during games. He has read this particular book on the sideline for most of the season.

“I’m going to continue to be myself,” Brown said. “I’m not pretending, it’s not a facade or anything. Who cares who don’t like it? I’m a three-time All-Pro. Yes, I’m gonna pop my s—. That’s just what it is. I do that for myself. I don’t care what nobody like. I’m not a distraction. Most importantly, I go out there and do my job. So all the other s— just don’t matter.”

Despite playing in just 13 games this season, Brown still had 67 catches for 1,079 yards and 7 touchdowns. He was named a second-team All-Pro for the second consecutive season despite being snubbed for the Pro Bowl.

    Ready for the snow

There’s some snow in the forecast for Sunday at the Linc and the Eagles are ready for it.

“I know our guys are tough, I know our guys are physical,” head coach Nick Sirianni said. “There’s different things you do in a snow game depending on how the snow is, just like there’s different things you do in a rain game, just like there’s different things you do in a wind game. And so I know our guys will handle the elements regardless of what they are this weekend.”

The Eagles have been seeing a lot of Lincoln Financial Field the last two weeks and not just on Sundays. With the No. 2 seed and a win in the wild-card round, the Eagles earned the right two host at least two playoff game at their stadium in this run.

And with frigid temperatures in Philadelphia recently they have also practiced at the stadium the last two weeks too.

“The field is frozen outside,” head coach Nick Sirianni said last week. “We’ve tried to get outside as much as we possibly can. We play outside, so unless it’s a torrential downpour or the wind is completely out of control, we’re going to go outside. Can’t go out there today as far as our facility because the field will be frozen, so we will go over to the stadium.”

The Eagles got a taste of some snow this week.

    Protecting the Brotherly Shove

Against the Packers in the fourth quarter, the Eagles lined up for a Tush Push on 3rd-and-1 from their own 49-yard line and took a shot. Instead of keeping it, Jalen Hurts lofted a deep pass to A.J. Brown that fell incomplete. Brown had a step on his defender but the pass was just off the mark.

In a game with a mostly conservative game plan, this was an aggressive call.

“It was a play that we’ve had in for a number of weeks,” offensive coordinator Kellen Moore said. “We were trying to find the right opportunity to present it. Obviously, we feel really good about the sneak, and it was a 3rd-and-1 that gave us a chance to be aggressive there with the 4th-and-1 in our pocket. Took a chance. Obviously, it’s an aggressive call. We were close, but it didn’t happen. We’ll see what happens next.”

After the incompletion, the Eagles actually ran the Tush Push and moved the chains on fourth down.

Even though the shot play didn’t work, it might have still served its purpose. Because the Tush Push (or Brotherly Shove) is one of the Eagles’ most effective plays. And any wrinkle they run off it if helps protect that play. If putting that play on tape puts any doubt in the minds of defenders and slows them down by a millisecond firing off the ball the next time the Eagles line up in that formation, then it’ll all be worth it.

“There’s always value to the things you put on tape to force things to think about what has been done and what could be done,” Moore said. “So we took a shot. I thought it was worthwhile, and we were able to get the sneak on the next play.”

    A reminder about Goedert

Tight end Dallas Goedert was limited to just 10 games in the regular season this year but had a big performance in the wild-card round win. He had 4 catches for 47 yards, including an angry 24-yard catch-and-run touchdown with a few stiff-arms along the way.

Goedert said his favorite reaction to the touchdown came from rookie edge rusher Jalyx Hunt.

“He came up to me and hyped me up a little bit,” Goedert said. “It always makes you feel good. He’s been doing a tremendous job with his increased role. That was pretty cool.”

Not only did Goedert have some big plays through the air but he also had a really good game as a run blocker. Goedert said it was one of his best blocking performances of the last couple of years.

Goedert is in his seventh NFL season. And when he’s healthy, there aren’t many better dual-threat tight ends in the league — but he has missed considerable time.

“I don’t really worry about other people’s opinions,” Goedert said. “I think that the people in this building know what I’m capable of, know what I bring to the table each and every time. Leave that to the other people, but I  have full belief in myself and I have full belief in me from everyone on the team as well. But it’s important to go out there and keep reminding people.”

    A free agency swing-and-miss

It has been a disappointing season for free agent pickup Bryce Huff and if you were holding out hope that he’d contribute in the playoffs, that isn’t looking good either.

Huff against the Packers played just one defensive snap. The Eagles elected to use their three-man edge rusher rotation with Nolan Smith, Josh Sweat and Jalyx Hunt.

“We had a good three-man rotation with the other guys,” Fangio said. “And we just stuck with it.”

It was a projection in March when the Eagles signed Huff to a three-year, $51.1 million contract. Huff was coming off a 10-sack season and his advanced stats over the last couple of seasons were really impressive. But the Eagles were projecting him to be a starter and it became clear pretty early on that he wasn’t ready for that role. He became a rotational player and then hurt his wrist and needed surgery. He returned but now that the Eagles are in the playoffs, he’s an afterthought.

Looking ahead at next year, cutting Huff before June 1 would leave $29 million in dead money and even a trade would leave $12.9 million in dead money, per OverTheCap. That trade figure becomes a little more palatable after June 1 but the Eagles might be stuck with him in 2025.

  • Menendez brothers hearing rescheduled due to LA wildfires – NBC Los Angeles

The highly anticipated resentencing hearing for Lyle and Erik Menendez has been rescheduled due to the Los Angeles County wildfires.

Originally set for Jan. 30 and 31, the county’s top prosecutor announced Friday that a judge continued the hearing to March 20-21.

“The continuance is due to the impact of recent wildfires on the parties’ extensive preparations for the hearings,” according to a statement from District Attorney Nathan Hochman’s office.

Los Angeles County District Attorney Gascón recommended resentencing in October for the brothers, serving life sentences for the 1989 shotgun murders of their parents at the family’s Beverly Hills mansion. Hochman, who defeated Gascón in the November election, met earlier this year with family members who support resentencing.

Prosecutors in California are reviewing the convictions of the Menendez brothers, who were found guilty in the 1989 killing of their parents, officials said on Thursday.

The deadly Eaton and Palisades fires started Jan. 7 and became two of the most destructive on record in California.

The Menendez brothers hearing, originally scheduled for next week, has been rescheduled due to the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles. The brothers, who were convicted of killing their parents in a high-profile case in the early 1990s, were set to appear in court for a hearing related to their ongoing legal proceedings.

The wildfires in the Los Angeles area have forced the closure of the courthouse where the hearing was set to take place, leading to the rescheduling of the event. The Menendez brothers, who have been in prison for over two decades, were hoping for a chance at a new trial or reduced sentence.

The rescheduled hearing date has not yet been announced, but it is clear that the wildfires have had a significant impact on the justice system in Los Angeles. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
