Fred Warner cautiously optimistic 49ers can rebound in 2025 NFL season – NBC Sports Bay Area & California
The 49ers had a disappointing 2024 NFL season, but Fred Warner is confident San Francisco’s experience with adversity will assist the team’s efforts to rally for a bounce-back campaign in 2025.
The All-Pro linebacker detailed how past examples of the 49ers’ resiliency on the heels of a down season can serve as the perfect motivational tool to return San Francisco back to prominence after a last-place finish in 2024.
“There is a couple things I would say. One, obviously, in the past, we’ve had down seasons. 2018, my rookie year was not a good year, but then we all go on to play a Super Bowl the following year. 2020, another down year, a lot of injuries, and we go back to the NFC Championship Game,” Warner said on a recent episode of “The Warner House” podcast. “So I say that as the first part to say that is encouraging to know that it’s been done before, but I say that with an asterisk next to it, because the last thing that you can do, or last thing that you want to do, is say to yourself, ‘Oh, we’ve done it before. We’ll do it again.’
“You can’t go about it that way, because if you look back at those moments, especially the one I think of is in 2021 we started that season after having a losing year in 2020, we started 2021 3-5. And I remember that feeling of going into Chicago, where, if we lose that next game, we’re 3-6.
“You want to talk about some heat on that derriere? That’s it. So anyway, the whole point I’m trying to make is, yeah, even though it’s been done before, it’s going to take even more of an effort, even more of everything to say you have a chance at getting back to the 49er standard like we talked about. So it’s going to be, to be quite frank, it’s going to be miserable. And that’s exactly how you want it.”
The 49ers have made a habit of bouncing back strong after 10-plus-loss seasons, reaching at least the NFC Championship Game the year following such campaigns the last three times it has happened during coach Kyle Shanahan’s tenure.
Despite the lack of team success, Warner still posted an impressive 2024 season, earning First-Team All-Pro honors for the fourth time in his seven-year NFL career — an even more impressive feat considering Warner played with a fractured ankle for a majority of the 2024 season.
The 49ers begin a pivotal offseason with hopes of reloading for a deep playoff run in 2025, armed with the No. 11 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft as San Francisco seeks to add difference makers around Warner and the rest of its veteran core.
One thing is for certain, the established leaders on the team know what it takes to rebound from a down year. Whether or not they will be successful in doing so this time around remains to be seen.

The San Francisco 49ers had a rough 2024 NFL season, finishing with a disappointing 6-11 record. However, star linebacker Fred Warner remains cautiously optimistic about the team’s chances in the upcoming 2025 season. In an interview with NBC Sports Bay Area & California, Warner expressed confidence in the 49ers’ talent and potential for a rebound. Despite the challenges they faced last season, Warner believes that the team has the ability to turn things around and compete at a high level.
With a new coaching staff in place and key players returning from injury, Warner sees the 49ers as a team on the rise. He emphasized the importance of staying focused and working hard to improve in all areas, both on and off the field.
While acknowledging that the NFL is a highly competitive league, Warner remains optimistic about the 49ers’ chances in the upcoming season. He believes that with the right mindset and dedication, they can overcome their past struggles and make a strong push for the playoffs.
As the 49ers prepare for the 2025 NFL season, Fred Warner’s cautious optimism serves as a reminder that anything is possible in football. With hard work and determination, the team has the potential to surprise their critics and achieve great success on the gridiron.

Joe Mazzulla lauds Jaylen Brown’s ‘intensity’ in Celtics’ dominant win over Magic – NBC Sports Boston
The real Jaylen Brown showed up for the TD Garden crowd in Friday night’s emphatic Boston Celtics victory over the Orlando Magic.
It was a bounce-back performance for Brown, who looked out of sorts during the team’s stunning loss in Toronto. He totaled just 10 points on 4-of-16 shooting and looked uncharacteristically disengaged defensively in Wednesday’s 110-97 defeat.
Against Orlando, Brown notched 20 points — 13 in the third quarter — on 5-of-12 shooting and made all nine of his shots from the free-throw line. He added six assists and six rebounds while making a huge defensive impact with three steals.
Above all else, Brown’s effort level set the tone for a Celtics team that has looked lethargic over the last month. C’s coach Joe Mazzulla took notice and praised the 2024 NBA Finals MVP after Friday’s win.
“I liked just how he was thoroughly intense,” Mazzulla said. “I think that’s important for us. He brings a different level of a mentality to us at times, and I thought tonight he brought a great level of intensity.
“He had 20 points on 12 shots. He has the ability to impact the game without shooting. I thought he just impacted it in many different ways. Even toward the end of the game to close the game, he had the kick-ahead to Al (Horford) in the corner. So his ability to just impact the game in different ways and bring a high level of intensity is important for us to just continue to get better.”
Twenty points is a modest total by Brown’s standards, but his impact was felt far beyond the scoring column. While Jayson Tatum (30 points) and Kristaps Porzingis (23 points) knocked down shots, Brown thrived in a supporting role with heads-up plays on both ends of the floor.
After the win, Brown caught up with NBC Sports Boston’s Abby Chin to discuss his outing.
“For me, I was just trying to get my teammates going,” he said. “The game was kind of slow to start, so instead of just trying to force up shots, I just tried to get my teammates going and I feel like that helped us a little bit. …
“I’ve had to adjust. It’s a different year, and I just do what the team needs me to do. I’ve been able to evolve, do different things in my career. This team, I’m more of a playmaker so I just embrace it. Just get better in that role and just do what I do.”
Brown and the C’s will hope to carry the momentum from Friday’s win into the second night of their back-to-back Saturday vs. the Atlanta Hawks. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. ET at TD Garden.
In a recent game between the Boston Celtics and the Orlando Magic, Jaylen Brown’s intensity on the court caught the attention of assistant coach Joe Mazzulla. Mazzulla praised Brown for his high level of energy and focus, which played a key role in the Celtics’ dominant victory.During the game, Brown showcased his defensive prowess by shutting down his opponents and making crucial plays on both ends of the court. Mazzulla commended Brown for his relentless effort and leadership on the team, stating that his intensity set the tone for the rest of the players.
The Celtics’ impressive performance was a result of their collective effort, but Brown’s exceptional play stood out to Mazzulla and the rest of the coaching staff. As the team continues to strive for success this season, Brown’s intensity and determination will be crucial in their quest for a championship.
Overall, Brown’s standout performance in the game against the Magic has earned him recognition from his coaches and teammates, solidifying his reputation as a key player for the Celtics. With his unwavering intensity and skill on the court, Brown is poised to make a significant impact in the team’s future games.

Buckle up for a topsy-turvy weekend of weather – starting with a warm surge and ending with accumulating snow!
If you like mild winter temperatures, soak them up Saturday, because the mercury takes a dive next week. Along with the warmth will come patchy light rain, so keep a rain jacket or umbrella close.
Saturday’s rain will be mainly an afternoon event. The morning will bring clouds, but not much else. Showers push into the region around lunchtime, and they are already out before dinnertime. The rain will be scattered and mostly light.
Those on the eastern end of Long Island could see some steadier pockets of rain set up, but even those will be fast moving. Tuck an umbrella in your bag before heading out for the day. But if you forget, a jacket with a hood should be more than enough to keep you dry.
Most of us will get less than a tenth of an inch — not much. On Long Island, where the rain will be more steady, expect between a tenth a quarter of an inch. But overall, this round of precipitation will not have a big impact.
This weekend, Sunday will be the main event. A winter storm watch was issued for much of northeastern New Jersey, the Hudson Valley and Fairfield County in Connecticut into Monday morning.
Snow will move in before noon, as temperatures drop below freezing. With colder air moving into the region and timing favoring the latter half of the day, temperatures for most of us are back below freezing, meaning this is largely an all-snow event. Expect snow to move in by early afternoon, continuing through the evening, tapering off just after midnight.
Along the Jersey Coast and the eastern end of Long Island, where temperatures start off a bit milder, initial rain and snow mixing is expected before snow fully takes over, resulting in relatively lower accumulations at the coasts.
Otherwise, we expect a general 3 to 5 inches in the New York City metro area. Further inland parts of northern New Jersey, upper Hudson Valley and into Connecticut, 5 to 8 inches are likely. And some higher elevation areas of northwest New Jersey and the Hudson Valley could get as much as a foot of snow.
Any shift in the storm track will change the location of the highest snow accumulations, but the general outlook remains the same: We are expecting plowable snow across the tri-state on Sunday. Be ready for shoveling and sledding on Monday, just be sure to dress for the cold.
The snow that falls on Sunday is not melting any time soon. Temperatures next week plummet into the teens and 20s for several days; morning lows fall to the single digits in the city.
We’ll experience the coldest blast of air of the season, with Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday being the worst. Morning wind chills on those days could be sub-zero, making for downright dangerous conditions.
The end of January is climatologically the coldest time of year for Central Park. And this year is certainly delivering in that regard.

To Stock Show fans, she’s likely best known for the design and creation of the dozens of glamourous “outfits” worn by the Grand Entry’s 12 pivot setters and two riders who lead the procession carrying the American and Texas flags.
Summer and Megan carry on that tradition today and will be at every rodeo performance at Dickies Arena.
But Saturday’s parade comes first.
The two-mile parade will begin on Main Street and Weatherford Street south of the Tarrant County Courthouse, will continue south to the Convention Center, turn right at 9th Street and right on Houston Street, and continue north on Houston Street. Street closures will begin at 9 a.m.

Friday’s indictment by federal prosecutors charges former Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao with “a corrupt relationship with her partner Andre Jones, and local businessmen, defendants David Duong and Andy Duong.”
At the time of the allegations, David Duong was – and is believed to still be – the president and CEO of Cal Waste Solutions, a recycling company contracted with the City of Oakland. He’s also co-owner of a housing company. His son, Andy, also works at Cal Waste Solutions and co-owns the same housing company.
Leading up to Oakland’s 2022 mayoral election, federal prosecutors say Sheng Thao promised, if she was elected, the City of Oakland would buy housing units from the Duongs. In exchange, the indictment alleges the Duongs spent $75,000 on campaign mailers targeting her opponents.
Prosecutors say the Duongs also paid Thao’s partner Andre Jones $95,000 for a “no-show job” with their housing company, meaning no work was expected.
Once Thao was mayor, prosecutors allege she used her influence to help appoint a high-level city official selected by the Duongs.
On Friday, Oakland’s City Administrator’s Office told NBC Bay Area, “The person identified in the indictment as Employee 1, or the former Interim Deputy Director of Housing and Community Development, stopped working in that department at the end of 2023, and thereafter worked in a different department. The individual submitted their resignation notice to the City today, Friday, January 17, 2025.”
“It’s clear the federal government is taking this very seriously,” said Michelle Rippy, chair of the Criminal Justice Department at CSU East Bay. “There certainly seems to be a lot of evidence that they have been able to obtain and list out in the indictment.”
Prosecutors say the evidence was made possible by a partnership between the FBI, IRS and US Post Office.
The evidence also alleges Thao, Jones and the Duongs tried to cover up the scheme. Thao allegedly directed the Duongs to make payments to Jones to avoid a paper trail leading back to her.
“The indictment itself is chock-full of allegations,” said Thao’s attorney Jeff Tsai on Friday. “But it is not chock-full of evidence, and that’s what we’re going to prove in the course of our defense of this case.”
“The case is built on allegations from an unknown co-conspirator that we believe, when evidence is revealed, will show my client has committed no crimes,” Tsai said.
In court Friday, Thao, Jones and the Duongs pled not guilty. Jones did not provide a statement.
Attorneys representing David and Andy Duong released statements saying their clients are innocent.
“We have kept quiet despite the media frenzy over the past months in the hope that the government would correctly come to see through objective investigation that the allegations are baseless, and being fanned by nothing more than gossip and supposition stitched together by the fabrications and delusions of those who lack all fundamental credibility,” attorneys for Andy Duong wrote.
Thao, Jones and the Duongs are presumed innocent until proven otherwise; however, Rippy says the indictment alone is having an impact on public trust in Oakland and beyond.
“That is going to be a very big challenge to overcome in the future for not only Oakland but many other local governments to make sure that they can maintain what trust is left,” she said.
Sheng Thao, a prominent figure in Oakland politics, has recently been indicted on charges related to corruption and bribery. The charges against her stem from an investigation into her alleged involvement in a scheme to solicit and accept bribes in exchange for favorable treatment on city contracts.Thao, who currently serves as a council member in Oakland, has denied any wrongdoing and has vowed to fight the charges in court. The indictment alleges that she accepted thousands of dollars in cash and gifts from a local businessman in exchange for helping him secure a lucrative city contract.
The case has sent shockwaves through the Oakland political scene, with many residents expressing disbelief at the allegations against Thao. As the investigation unfolds, more details are expected to emerge about the extent of her involvement in the alleged scheme.
Thao’s indictment serves as a reminder of the importance of holding public officials accountable for their actions and ensuring that they act in the best interests of their constituents. As the case moves forward, it will be crucial for the justice system to uncover the truth and deliver justice for any wrongdoing that may have occurred.
Stay tuned to NBC Bay Area for updates on the Sheng Thao indictment charges and the ongoing investigation into this troubling case.

#Sheng #Thao #indictment #charges #explained #NBC #Bay #AreaHow much snow are we getting in Mass., NH? – NBC Boston
The excitement is rising as our probability for snow continues to increase for Sunday night in New England. First we enjoy a little warmup and a little chance for rain on Saturday.
Weekend outlook
Today our temps are warm enough to melt away some ice and a little snow we picked up on Cape Cod last night (around 0.5”). Overnight lows drop to below freezing but rebound quickly on a gusty south wind Saturday. Highs jump to the 40s and we have scattered rain moving in by late afternoon through late night. After that system, we open the door to colder air and the set up for snow Sunday. The morning starts off with highs in the 30s and increasing clouds as a coastal low develops off the Carolina coast.
Timing and snowfall totals
We’ve issued a First Alert for Sunday’s snowstorm.
The entire day remains dry, with some clouds and pretty calm conditions. Then by the evening, our storm heads our way. By 7 p.m., a few snow showers move in south to north as a northeasterly wind takes hold. As the low strengthens and passes by “the benchmark,” it swings in more wind and snow. Some ocean enhanced bands are possible, and this helps to crank out higher snow rates, which helps to cool our temps to increase some snow totals.
By midnight, our mixing continues to turn to more snow on the South Shore, in Boston, and on the Cape and islands. That rain/snow line sets up near the upper Cape initially and then moves southeast overnight.
The back half of the storm is where we get the 1-3 inches for southeastern Massachusetts. Meanwhile in Boston we see steady snowfall for several hours and for areas inland.
By Monday morning, we plow out of 3-6 inches of snow. Some areas could see more based on fluffier snow consistency inland.
The storm tapers and moves away by noon Monday. This leads to more arctic air and highs in the 20s.
Wind and coastal concerns
As is typical with an offshore low, we have a period of northeast wind gusts. The pressure center lowers enough to gusts up to 30-40 mph at the coast, with inland spots up to 20 mph overnight Sunday. While this isn’t quite damaging wind, it will be a nuisance wind on top of periods of heavy snow.
The shoreline will see some erosion on beaches as waves increase Monday morning as the low departs to the Canadian Maritimes. No coastal flooding is expected since tides are astronomically low.
Polar vortex brings coldest air in 2 years
Prepare for some wicked cold. The coldest air in two years creeps in Monday with highs in the 20s, but wait… there’s more. Highs fall to the teens Tuesday and Wednesday with lows around zero in southern New England.
A First Alert has been issued for both days, with wind chills expected to be below zero.
We modify temps later next week as nearby storm systems bring in some precipitation chances to the northeast. Stay tuned on our more active weather pattern next week.
Track Sunday’s snowstorm with live radar
Winter storm warning in effect for Massachusetts and New Hampshire as heavy snowfall expectedThe National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for much of Massachusetts and New Hampshire, with significant snowfall expected throughout the region.
In Massachusetts, areas including Boston, Worcester, and Springfield are expected to see 6-10 inches of snow, with localized amounts up to a foot possible. In New Hampshire, cities such as Manchester and Nashua could see similar snow totals.
Residents are urged to take precautions and avoid unnecessary travel during the storm, as hazardous road conditions are expected. Stay tuned to NBC Boston for the latest updates on snowfall totals and weather conditions. Stay safe and stay warm! #WinterStormWarning #Snowfall #NBCBoston

DiJonai Carrington envisioned her rise to WNBA superstardom two years before she earned Most Improved Player and All-Defensive First Team honors.
In 2022, the Connecticut Sun star jotted down “Most Improved Player” and Sixth Woman of the Year” as her WNBA goals. Last season, Carrington earned a starting role and enjoyed a breakout campaign with 12.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.6 steals per game while earning a reputation as one of the league’s best defenders.
On the latest episode of “Hoopin’” with Kayla Burton, Carrington reflected on setting and accomplishing those lofty goals.
“I knew the work I was putting in and I know what I’m capable of,” Carrington told Burton. “I just was ready for the moment and it was just about opportunity for me. Once the opportunity came, I knew that everything else would kind of follow.”
Carrington leveled up in every aspect of her game in 2024, but when she looks back at her impressive season, she is most proud of how her effort level never dwindled.
“The biggest thing I was impressed with myself was my motor and the consistency,” Carrington said. “It’s easy to be good in spurts. It’s easy to be good for half a season for a few games against specific teams. But it’s hard to be consistent and to do that throughout a whole season on offense and defense.
“So I think it was just being in shape and like I said, being prepared for that moment and just discipline, because I was able to just come in and be a spark the previous three years. This year it was like, no, you have to be able to sustain this for 30 minutes, however long I’m in the game.”
On Aug. 2, 2024, Carrington and the Sun played in front of a sold-out crowd at TD Garden. On a Tuesday night, 19,156 tickets were sold to mark the most for a Sun game in the franchise’s history. The experience perfectly capped off Carrington’s unforgettable year.
“That was crazy. Just that NBA arena-type vibe was just insane,” she said. “Having our big old posters — it was just so much buzz around it within the New England community and I think that was so exciting. And how excited the city got for the game was just insane. … So I’m excited to hopefully do more of that in the future.”
The Sun will return to TD Garden for a showdown with phenom Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever on July 15.

A former prominent doctor at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, who is accused in a class action lawsuit of sexually assaulting more than 200 patients, has now been indicted on two counts of rape.
The indictment alleges that Derrick Todd — a former rheumatologist whose specialty involves treating inflammatory conditions of the muscles, joints and bones — assaulted two women whom he gave medical examinations to in December 2022 and June 2023 at the Charles River Medical Associates Office in Framingham, Massachusetts.
The Yale and UMass graduate also practiced at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital in Boston where there’s a class action lawsuit against him accusing of performing unnecessary pelvic floor therapy, breast examinations, testicular examinations and rectal examinations on more than 200 women and several men ranging from teens to people in their 60s.
The alleged abuse dates back to 2010 but came to light in 2023 when Brigham and Women’s received two anonymous complaints about Todd.
The Middlesex District Attorney’s Office said Todd turned himself in to Framingham police on Thursday night and was held on bail. He appeared in Middlesex Superior Court on Friday.
Prosecutors said the charges stem from the experiences of two patients, who reported going in for pelvic exams or pap smears. The patients told investigators that the exams went beyond what was “normal.”
One patient reported being in so much pain that she screamed for Todd to stop, but said he continued. The second patient said she said she did not consent to the particular type of exam but Todd moved forward with it anyway.
His attorney, Ingrid Martin said Todd is eager to defend himself from the allegations against him, fighting for no bail in his case and noting he has no criminal history.
“He’s eager to come to court, and finally have a forum through which he can finally see the evidence against him and challenge that evidence,” Martin said.
Bail was set at $10,000 cash and conditions set to surrender any passports passport and no contact with any victims.
Dr. Derrick Todd is facing legal action from a growing number of former patients, with at least 120 joining a class action lawsuit.
Resources for victims of sexual assault are available through the National Sexual Violence Resources Center and the National Sexual Assault Telephone Hotline at 800-656-4673, and Massachusetts provides this list of statewide and resources for sexual assault survivors.
A lawyer for Todd, Anthony Abeln, has previously said that his client would “not litigate this matter in the media, but he will defend his care as the case progresses through the Massachusetts Superior Court system.”
In September, Todd reached a voluntary agreement with the Board of Registration in Medicine to stop practicing medicine anywhere in the country.
In shocking news, former Brigham doctor Derrick Todd has been indicted for rape. According to NBC Boston, Todd is facing serious charges after multiple allegations of sexual assault came to light. The former doctor, who once held a position of trust and authority, is now facing the consequences of his alleged actions. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

There’s a lot going on as we round the corner to midwinter.
First up, is the warmup today (a bit) and Saturday (a bit more). A superb winter day is in store as we leap past freezing and head for the mid-30s.
Rain expected Saturday
Clouds will have the upper hand all weekend, but we expect the showers to hold off until Saturday afternoon.
Mild temperatures are expected.
Lots of melting and thawing with highs in the mid-40s.
How much snow will we get Sunday into Monday?
Sunday is the day we get jerked back to reality. Cold air will move in during the afternoon as a storm system winds up far offshore. Snow will sweep in from Connecticut and New York toward evening.
As subfreezing air is drawn in, the stage is set for accumulation overnight and into Monday morning.
Right now, it appears that the storm is moving quickly enough to keep amounts in the reasonable range of 3-5”.
But if the storm tracks a bit closer, we could see higher amounts with a bit more mixing on Cape Cod. It’s not a huge discrepancy — especially on a holiday weekend — but it will be an inconvenience and leave behind slippery travel/cleanup into Monday morning.
Blast of arctic air next week
What follows will certainly be the coldest air of this season AND last. We haven’t seen the likes of this cold in almost two years!
The wind won’t be howling in this cold snap, but just a moderate breeze will be enough to put us in “well below zero” territory in the wind chill department.
Thankfully, the cold won’t be around for long. Temps moderate late next week, as we watch the storm track carefully. We count no less than three close brushes with storms into the following week!
Have a good weekend.
