3 observations after Sixers allow 15-0 game-ending run, collapse in final minutes vs. Kings  – NBC Sports Philadelphia

On the verge of a five-game winning streak, the Sixers collapsed Wednesday night in Sacramento.

They conceded a 15-0 game-ending run to the Kings, who took a 113-107 victory.

De’Aaron Fox (35 points) and Domantas Sabonis (17 points, 21 rebounds, seven assists) starred for the Kings, who moved to 15-19.

Paul George recorded 30 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Tyrese Maxey had 27 points, six assists and five steals. As detailed below, both Maxey and George contributed plenty to put the Sixers on the precipice of a win, but they were in the middle of the disaster down the stretch.

On the first night of a back-to-back that will wrap up Thursday against the Warriors, four Sixers were sidelined. Following his eight-steal outing in the Sixers’ win Monday over the Trail Blazers, Kelly Oubre Jr. sat with a left hand sprain. Joel Embiid (left foot sprain), KJ Martin (left foot stress reaction) and Jared McCain (left lateral meniscus surgery) were also out.

Sacramento was without third-year forward Keegan Murray (left ankle soreness) and rookie guard Devin Carter (return to competition reconditioning).

Here are observations on the 13-18 Sixers’ first defeat of 2025:

George finds his game in first half

Kyle Lowry started for the first time since Nov. 18 and Guerschon Yabusele began the night at center. With Oubre out, Yabusele became the lone remaining Sixer to have played every game this season.

The Kings made a bright start, taking a 15-7 lead when Malik Monk finished a tough fast-break layup against Lowry. After a timeout, George got the ball on an Iverson cut and the Sixers set up a simple isolation. George drove and threw a pass out to the wing that Keon Ellis picked off.

His night then pivoted in a far more positive direction. George drilled two early three-pointers and scored 11 of the Sixers’ first 18 points, including an improbable jumper that he banked in while being fouled by Kevin Huerter.

The nine-time All-Star hit foul trouble yet again — that’s three straight games now — but at least avoided anything truly damaging in the first half. George was called for his second foul at the 2:31 mark of the first quarter, but Sixers head coach Nick Nurse subbed him back in for the final possession of the first and George received a much more pleasant whistle, drawing a three-shot foul on Ellis.

George was still great in the early stages of the second quarter. He converted a driving layup, drained a fadeaway jumper and fired a crisp cross-court assist of an Eric Gordon three. The 34-year-old reached 20 points with another second-quarter layup, which is more than he’d scored in any full game during his slump across the prior six contests.

George stayed down after making that lay-in and crashing hard to the floor on his back. He ultimately went to the bench following a timeout and re-entered for the final few minutes of the second quarter.

The Sixers’ early-season luck was absurdly bad on everything from injuries vs. injury scares to jumpers rimming out vs. dropping in. Though all silver linings will understandably be waved off after how the night ended, George’s track record does suggest he’s due for more showings like Wednesday’s first half.

Drummond and Gordon back in the fold

The Sixers welcomed veterans Gordon and Andre Drummond back to their rotation. Drummond had missed the past three games with a left toe sprain, Gordon the past four after undergoing oral surgery.

While those players filled expected roles, no one projected rookie wing Justin Edwards would play first-quarter minutes.

Edwards has mainly been with the G League’s Delaware Blue Coats as one of the Sixers’ three two-way contract players. He logged his first NBA rotation time (five minutes) and missed his one shot attempt, a catch-and-shoot three. DeMar DeRozan made a tough mid-range jumper on him, as he’s done against just about everyone over the years.

Gordon and Drummond each had productive returns, posting 19 of the Sixers’ 25 bench points in the first half. Gordon sunk a three off of a Drummond kick-out pass to extend the Sixers’ lead to 51-37.

Sacramento pushed back with a big run, stringing stops together with its zone defense. Fox’s buzzer-beating three tied the game up at halftime.

Tons of late mistakes from Sixers’ stars

Maxey scored a dozen points in the third quarter and the Sixers’ shooters were hot across the board. He stole the ball from Monk on a successful blitz with Yabusele, then drew a foul in transition and knocked down his free throws, giving the Sixers a 75-66 lead.

Fox, a fellow Kentucky product, was stellar in the second half, scoring relentlessly and ending the evening 13 for 16 from the floor. He prevented the Sixers from breaking the game open, and that proved to be a larger problem than increasing the stress level of a victory.

Maxey, George and the Sixers collectively did a catastrophic job of countering the Kings’ defensive aggression in the final minutes.

With Sacramento sending all-out blitzes at Maxey, the Sixers turned to George in the post. He tried to step through two defenders and find an opening, but he let the shot clock expire in the process.

Maxey had a similar idea far further from the basket when he attempted to split the Kings’ blitz near half court. The result was a turnover, which led to a fast-break DeRozan layup. Maxey forced up and missed a difficult runner on the Sixers’ next trip.

Finally, with the Sixers trailing by two points, George turned the ball over, getting stripped on a drive and not hearing the whistle he wanted. He eventually committed his sixth foul and Sacramento iced the game at the foul line.

Even when everything seems to be clicking, lapsing on the fundamentals can quite clearly be costly. As Nurse said after the Sixers’ Christmas victory over the Celtics, his team was consistently elite at taking care of the ball last season. In Sacramento, the Sixers’ stars were poor in that department and allowed the Kings to steal a stunning comeback win.

    1. Lack of Clutch Play: The Sixers’ inability to close out games in crunch time was on full display as they allowed the Kings to go on a 15-0 run in the final minutes. This is a concerning trend for a team with championship aspirations.
    2. Defensive Breakdowns: The Sixers’ usually stout defense faltered down the stretch, allowing the Kings to get easy looks at the basket. Communication and execution on the defensive end will need to improve if the team hopes to compete at a high level.
    3. Offensive Stagnation: Offensively, the Sixers struggled to generate quality shots in the closing minutes, settling for contested jumpers and failing to capitalize on opportunities. Finding ways to maintain offensive flow and execute in crucial moments will be key moving forward.

  • Paul George vs. Andrew Wiggins is Warriors matchup to watch vs. 76ers – NBC Sports Bay Area & California

Paul George vs. Andrew Wiggins is Warriors matchup to watch vs. 76ers – NBC Sports Bay Area & California

Deeply disappointed after missing the playoffs last spring, the Warriors ventured into summer vowing to make substantial roster upgrades. At the top of their wish list was six-time All-Star Paul George, then with the Los Angeles Clippers.

The Clippers, however, were unwilling to entertain a deal in which George would land with Golden State. They opted to let George enter the free-agent market, putting him out of reach for the salary-cap-strapped Warriors and into the laps of the Philadelphia 76ers, one of the few teams with sufficient cap space to offer a max contract ($212 million, four years).

So, George’s first game this season at Chase Center will be as an opponent. The 76ers (13-18) and Warriors (16-16) meet Thursday night, with tipoff scheduled shortly after 7.

The man the Warriors targeted will spend considerable time facing Andrew Wiggins, one of the players that interested the Clippers when the teams considered proposals last summer.

Wiggins’ season has been one of peaks and valleys. He’s averaging 16.4 points per game, third on the team, shooting 44.6 percent from the field, including 40.7 percent distance. He is one of three Warriors – Stephen Curry and Jonathan Kuminga are the others – to score at least 20 points in nine games.

But Wiggins has reached 20 points only once in the last seven games and has a total of 23 over his last three games on 10-of-32 shooting from the field, including 3 of 14 from deep.

This game should place Wiggins’ pride on full display. He loves the Golden State franchise and knows he almost certainly would have gone to the Clippers in any deal that brought George to the Warriors.

Though George will face a variety of defenders, including Draymond Green and Kuminga, it’s Wiggins who has something to prove. If George, averaging 16.1 points while shooting 41.5 percent from the field, including 32.8 from deep, has the superior game, it puts Philly in position for victory.

Wiggins needs a strong game to pull out of his tailspin, and the same applies to the Warriors, who have lost 13 of their last 17 games and hoping to use the current homestand to right themselves.

The 76ers also are trying to rise in the standings. They’re trying to climb out of the hole they fell into earlier, losing 12 of their first 14 games while navigating injury-related absences of Joel Embiid and George. George is healthy, but Embiid is listed as questionable with a left foot sprain.

The highly anticipated matchup between the Golden State Warriors and the Philadelphia 76ers is set to be a thrilling showdown, but one specific matchup to keep an eye on is Paul George vs. Andrew Wiggins.

Both players are dynamic scorers and elite defenders, making this head-to-head battle one to watch. George, known for his versatility and ability to score from anywhere on the court, will be looking to outshine Wiggins, who has been a key contributor for the Warriors this season.

With the Warriors and 76ers both vying for playoff positioning, this matchup could have significant implications for both teams. Make sure to tune in to NBC Sports Bay Area & California to catch all the action and see which player comes out on top in this exciting showdown.

  • How Dennis Schröder helped Timberwolves’ Donte DiVincenzo out of slump – NBC Sports Bay Area & California

How Dennis Schröder helped Timberwolves’ Donte DiVincenzo out of slump – NBC Sports Bay Area & California

Dennis Schröder helped reshape former Warriors guard Donte DiVincenzo’s outlook after he was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves on the eve of the NBA season.

DiVincenzo revealed in an exclusive interview with The Athletic’s Jon Krawczynski that he traded texts with Schröder earlier this season after the latter was traded to Golden State.

“He was just straightforward with his words,” DiVincenzo told Krawczynski. “He said that it’s hard. You just have to go out and do it. No matter where you’re at, just be you and just go do it. You look yourself in the mirror and be like, all right, the situation is the situation. Let last year go. This year is this year.”

DiVincenzo was a critical component of the New York Knicks last season, helping the team make a run in the Eastern Conference playoffs. While he was expected to contribute to the Knicks again this season, he was part of the massive Karl-Anthony Towns trade two days before the start of training camp. His start to the season was a rough one, as he struggled to adjust to a new team, but thanks to Schröder’s encouragement, he’s beginning to look like his old self.

The 27-year-old spent one season with the Warriors during the 2022-2023 NBA season before agreeing to a four-year $50 million contract with the Knicks.

Schröder still is settling in with Golden State since coming over in a trade with the Brooklyn Nets. While he has flashed brilliance at times, he and the Warriors are mired in a prolonged slump of mediocrity.

At 16-15, Golden State still is in contention for a playoff spot in the Western Conference, but the margin for error is razor-thin for the rest of the season. Hopefully, Schröder can channel DiVincenzo and stage his own comeback with his new team.

It has been a tough stretch for Timberwolves’ guard Donte DiVincenzo, but teammate Dennis Schröder has been instrumental in helping him break out of his slump. The two have been working closely together in practice, with Schröder providing guidance and support to help DiVincenzo regain his confidence on the court.

Schröder, known for his leadership and work ethic, has been a positive influence on DiVincenzo both on and off the court. The veteran guard has been offering advice on shooting technique, defensive strategies, and overall mindset, all of which have helped DiVincenzo improve his performance in recent games.

Thanks to Schröder’s mentorship, DiVincenzo has been able to break out of his slump and make a significant impact for the Timberwolves. His improved play has not gone unnoticed, with fans and analysts alike praising his recent performances.

The dynamic between Schröder and DiVincenzo is a prime example of the importance of teamwork and support within a basketball team. With Schröder’s guidance, DiVincenzo has been able to overcome his struggles and become a key contributor for the Timberwolves.

As the season progresses, it will be exciting to see how Schröder and DiVincenzo continue to work together and help lead the Timberwolves to success on the court. Their partnership serves as a reminder of the impact that one player can have on the growth and development of their teammates.

How to watch – NBC New York

The College Football Playoff quarterfinal at the Sugar Bowl between Georgia and Notre Dame was postponed a day because of an attack about a mile away from the Superdome early Wednesday, when authorities say a truck driver deliberately plowed into a New Year’s crowd and killed 15 people.

The game, originally scheduled for 7:45 p.m. CST at the 70,000-seat Superdome on Wednesday, was pushed back to 3 p.m. Thursday. The winner advances to the Jan. 9 Orange Bowl against Penn State.

“Public safety is paramount,” Sugar Bowl CEO Jeff Hundley said at a media briefing alongside federal, state and local officials, including Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry and New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell. “All parties all agree that it’s in the best interest of everybody and public safety that we postpone the game.”

The casualties occurred when a driver rammed a pickup truck into a crowd of revelers in New Orleans’ famed French Quarter early on New Year’s Day. In addition to those killed, more than 30 people were injured. The driver was killed in a firefight with police following the attack at about 3:15 a.m. along Bourbon Street near Canal Street, the FBI said.

The decision to postpone the game meant numerous traveling fans with tickets would not be able to attend. Ticket prices online plummeted in some cases to less than $25 as fans with plans to depart on Thursday tried to unload them.

“We can’t get new flights,” said Lisa Borrelli, a 34-year-old Philadelphia resident who came to New Orleans with her fiance, a 2011 Notre Dame graduate.

Postponing the game “was absolutely the right call,” she said. “I completely understand.”

She said they paid more than $250 per ticket and hadn’t bothered listing them for resale yet because prices were so low.

“Of course we’re disappointed to miss it and to lose so much money on it, but at the end of the day it doesn’t matter,” Borrelli said. “We’re fortunate enough that we’ll be fine.”

U.S. Rep. Troy Carter, D-La., said the decision to postpone the game “was not done lightly.”

“It was done with one single thing in mind: public safety — making sure that the citizens and visitors of this great city, not only for this event, but for every event you come to in Louisiana, that you will be safe,” Carter added.

Landry said he had a message for those thinking, “Man, do I really want to go to the Sugar Bowl tomorrow?”

“I tell you one thing: Your governor’s going to be there,” Landry said. “That is proof, believe you me, that that facility and this city is safer today than it was yesterday.”

Darrell Huckaby, 72, of Athens, Georgia, also decided to return home Thursday instead of staying for the game. He was in a hotel room overlooking the corner where the attack took place. He was asleep when it occurred, but when he woke up, he could see pink blankets covering the bodies of the dead, and later saw them being placed in bags and loaded onto trucks bound for the Orleans Parish Coroner’s office.

“It was heartbreaking,” he said. “I think the first instinct of most people this morning was wanting to be home. As important as football is to our Georgia culture, for a little while, the game just didn’t really seem to matter.

“And I think there was a lot of uncertainty, and I understand,” Huckaby said. “It took them a long time to decide on the game time and people kind of had to make decisions without all the information.”

He added that he would “probably eat” the $360 per ticket he paid.

Hundley said work was underway to “set up a safe and efficient and fun environment” at and around the Superdome on Thursday.

The Superdome was on lockdown for security sweeps on Wednesday morning.

Both teams spent most of the day in their hotels, holding meetings in ballrooms.

Georgia’s players bused to the Superdome for a walk-through practice on Wednesday evening. As they made their way to buses on Canal Street, fans in red and black stood eight to 10 deep behind barricades, cheering them on, phones held high above their heads to capture the scene.

Around that time, at a hotel on the banks of the Mississippi River, Notre Dame players gathered with family members in a ballroom where the Rose Bowl quarterfinal between Ohio State and Oregon was being shown on television.

Notre Dame offered band members the option of flying home on Thursday instead of attending the game, and some chose to do so.

Georgia president Jere Morehead said the university confirmed that a student was among those critically injured. Morehead said the university was in contact with the student’s family.

Statements from the University of Georgia Athletic Association and from Notre Dame said both schools had accounted for all team personnel and members of official travel parties.

New Orleans City Council President Helena Moreno told WDSU-TV earlier Wednesday, before the postponement was announced, that the security perimeter around the Superdome was being “extended to be a larger zone.”

“There are more police officers who are coming in,” she said.

The Superdome, which is about 20 blocks away, also is scheduled to host the Super Bowl on Feb. 9.

The first Super Bowl after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, also was held in New Orleans, and there was a massive security perimeter for that game including street closures surrounding the Superdome and officers — including snipers — on the tops of surrounding high-rise buildings, as well as on the roof of the dome itself.

“We are deeply saddened by the news of the devastating incident in New Orleans,” the NFL said in a statement.

“The NFL and the local host committee have been working collaboratively with local, state and federal agencies the past two years and have developed comprehensive security plans,” the statement continued. “We are confident attendees will have a safe and enjoyable Super Bowl experience.”

  • MTA – NBC New York

    MTA – NBC New York

With just days to go before the nation’s first congestion toll begins in New York City, the pricing plan may have passed its final hurdle in a ruling from a U.S. district court who heard a suit from the state of New Jersey on environmental grounds, according to the MTA. But an attorney for the state of New Jersey says not so fast.

While the judge ruled the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) will need to weigh in, the MTA tells NBC New York it has the green light to proceed with the start of congestion pricing this weekend saying the judge’s questions with the plan do not rise to the level of an injunction.

New York’s congestion pricing law is set to begin seconds past midnight on Jan. 5th. Under the congestion pricing plan, cars would pay a peak fee of $9 from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends. Off-peak would be a 75% discount — $2.25.

The lawsuit from New Jersey was for tens of millions of dollars, predicting environmental harm if traffic gets worse on the other side of the river.

The judge’s ruling came in a 72-page decision issued Monday evening.

“We’re gratified that on virtually every issue, Judge Gordon agreed with the New York federal court and rejected New Jersey’s claim that the Environmental Assessment approved 18 months ago was deficient,” MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber said in a statement. Most important, the decision does not interfere with the program’s scheduled implementation this coming Sunday, January 5.”

In the decision, the judge said because of the questions for the federal government, “this matter is remanded to the FHWA until January 17, 2025 for the FHWA to take actions in conformity with this Opinion.”

For the state of New Jersey, that’s enough to hold off on starting congestion pricing, despite how the MTA is reading the ruling.

“We welcome the court’s ruling today in the congestion pricing lawsuit. Because of New Jersey’s litigation, the judge has ordered a remand, and the MTA therefore cannot proceed with implementing the current congestion pricing proposal on January 5, 2025,” said attorney Randy Mastro, who represents New Jersey.

Mastro said New Jersey remains “firmly opposed” to implementation of congestion pricing.

In response to New Jersey’s lawsuit, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has said she offered money to settle it — but no deal was reached.

“We’ve made multiple offers to settle this lawsuit, very generous offers,” Hochul said previously.

After the ruling, Hochul said congestion pricing will start this weekend as planned.

“Despite the best efforts of the State of New Jersey trying to thwart New York’s ability to reduce congestion on our streets while making long-overdue investments in public transit, our position has prevailed in court on nearly every issue. This is a massive win for commuters in both New York and New Jersey,” the governor of New York said in a statement.

The MTA has predicted there would be 10% fewer cars and trucks after the toll begins.

MTA executives have promised that billions of dollars raised by congestion pricing will pay to modernize the system all across the region.

A week before the New Jersey ruling, a federal judge in New York denied a different suit trying to pause the start of congestion pricing.

Responding to a lawsuit from the United Federation of Teachers, the Trucking Association of New York and Manhattan residents, Judge Lewis Liman issued a 111-page ruling in that case denying a request for a temporary injunction.

“Plaintiffs fail to establish a likelihood of success on the merits for any claim,” the judge wrote in his conclusion.

  • Chicago Fire ends 2024 with a MAJOR victory at NBC

Chicago Fire ends 2024 with a MAJOR victory at NBC

As 2024 draws to a close, Chicago Fire fans have something more to celebrate as NBC’s original One Chicago drama has ended the year as NBC’s most-watched original series of the year!

That’s right, Chicago Fire might be in its thirteenth season but the hit series shows no signs of slowing down in locking down the top spot when it comes to viewership thus far this season when it comes to non-sports programming aka Sunday Night Football.

Season-to-date, Chicago Fire is averaging 7.8 million total viewers making it NBC’s top-rated non-sports program as well as the fourth most-watched drama on all of broadcast TV. While the show’s total viewership is down just a tad from last season – 8% to be exact – the fact that Chicago Fire remains the most-watched original series on NBC is a major victory for a show that is getting up there in seasons – a time when ratings tend to start falling off for many shows.

And it’s not just Chicago Fire that continues to perform well for NBC. Chicago Med and Chicago PD round out the Top 3 most-watched non-sports programs on NBC with Chicago Med season 10 averaging 7.4 million total viewers and Chicago PD season 12 averaging 6.9 million total viewers. As TVLine points out, this is the smallest audience gap for Chicago Med and Chicago Fire in four years, with Med really seeming to hit a stride in season 10.

In addition to leading the charge at NBC, all three One Chicago shows also landed within the Top 10 most-watched and top-rated dramas of the season which is an amazing feat for a trio of long-running series.

Needless to say, the numbers the One Chicago shows continue to pull in, and the shows securing the status as NBC’s three most-watched non-sports programs of the season bode particularly well for their renewal odds heading into 2025. While we don’t know when NBC will start making decisions about its current lineup, we don’t see a world in which Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, and Chicago PD aren’t renewed for another season.

The numbers clearly speak for themselves as all three shows remain incredibly successful for the network and we imagine they’ll soon be enjoying some season-high ratings when the crossover event airs this January. Given we also know that Wolf Entertainment is one of the most cost-efficient studios in the industry, there is simply no way NBC opts not to renew the One Chicago shows.

What we’re more interested to see is whether NBC might decide to bet big on the shows with a multi-season renewal or go with a more standard single-season renewal. We’ve seen the network take both approaches with the shows, so there’s no telling what the plan might be for renewing the shows but what we know is that with ratings as good as these we’re not worried at all about the One Chicago franchise’s future at NBC.

Chicago Fire fans rejoice! The beloved series has ended its 2024 season with a MAJOR victory at NBC. After years of heart-pounding drama, intense rescues, and unforgettable storylines, Chicago Fire has solidified its place as a fan-favorite show.

With a dedicated cast and crew, Chicago Fire has captivated audiences with its gripping portrayal of the lives of firefighters, paramedics, and rescue workers in the Windy City. The show’s commitment to authenticity and storytelling has earned it critical acclaim and a loyal following.

As the series comes to a close, fans can look back on the incredible journey of Chicago Fire and celebrate its success. From the nail-biting cliffhangers to the heartwarming moments of camaraderie, Chicago Fire has left a lasting impact on viewers around the world.

So here’s to Chicago Fire, a show that has truly set the small screen on fire with its unforgettable characters, thrilling action, and powerful messages. Thank you for an amazing run, Chicago Fire – you will be missed!
