  • How OT works in 2024-25 season – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

How OT works in 2024-25 season – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

The 2024-25 bowl season has already been a record-setting one for multi-overtime games.

Three bowl games have required at least two overtime periods to decide a winner so far — the most in any season since OT was introduced to college football in 1996, according to ESPN.

The first overtime game of the bowl season was in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl on Monday, when Northern Illinois defeated Fresno State 28-20 in double OT. Then, on Tuesday, South Florida and San Jose State played to a bowl-record five overtimes in the Hawai’i Bowl, with the Bulls beating the Spartans 41-39.

But that record didn’t last for long, as Toledo outlasted Pitt 48-46 in six overtimes on Thursday to win the GameAbove Sports Bowl. That now stands as the most overtimes ever played in a bowl game.

So, how exactly does overtime work in college football? Here’s what to know:

Who gets the ball first in college football overtime?

Possession to start overtime is determined just like it is in regulation — a coin toss where the visiting team calls heads or tails. The team that wins the coin toss gets to pick whether to start overtime on offense or defense, or it can choose the end of the field it wants to defend first.

How does overtime work in college football?

Overtime play doesn’t exactly look the same as regulation play. There aren’t any kickoffs and only the play clock — and not the game clock — is utilized.

For the first overtime, each team gets one possession starting with a first-and-10 at the opposing 25-yard line. The team with the most points at the end of the period wins the game.

For example, if the team who possesses the ball first settles for a field goal, the other team can extend the game with a field goal or win it on a touchdown (not scoring at all would result in a loss for that team).

What are the rules for the 2nd overtime in college football?

Should the game remain tied after one overtime, the rules change slightly. If a team scores a touchdown in the second overtime, it must attempt a 2-point conversion.

Field goal attempts are still allowed in the second OT, but extra point tries aren’t.

What are the rules for the 3rd overtime in college football?

A game essentially turns into a 2-point conversion competition if it reaches triple overtime.

Starting in the third overtime, each team gets to attempt one two-point try. This format continues for any subsequent OT periods until a winner is decided.

The 2-point conversion rule was first introduced in 2019 for games that reached a fifth overtime, but it was changed to the third OT in 2021.

How many overtimes are there in college football?

There are no ties in college football, so an overtime game continues until a winner is decided.

What’s the record for most overtimes in a college football game?

The longest game in FBS history was a nine-overtime upset where Illinois defeated then-No. 7 Penn State in 2021. The game was tied 10-10 after regulation before the Fighting Illini secured a 20-18 victory.

Illinois-Penn State is one of just seven games to ever reach at least a seventh OT, according to the NCAA.

CNBC reporter Michael Ozanian explains the analysis behind CNBC’s list of the top 75 most valuable college athletic programs.

The 2024-25 season has brought some exciting changes to how overtime (OT) works in the world of sports. In this post, we’ll take a look at how OT is being implemented in various sports leagues and how it is impacting the game.

In the NFL, the 2024-25 season has seen the introduction of a modified sudden death overtime format. Teams will now have the opportunity to possess the ball at least once in overtime, regardless of whether the first possession results in a touchdown. This change has been met with mixed reviews from players and fans, but many agree that it adds an extra level of excitement to the game.

In the NHL, OT rules have also undergone some changes. The league has adopted a 3-on-3 overtime format, where teams play with fewer players on the ice to create more open space and increase the likelihood of scoring. This has led to faster-paced and more high-scoring games in overtime, much to the delight of fans.

In the NBA, overtime rules remain largely unchanged, with teams playing an additional five-minute period until a winner is determined. However, there has been talk of implementing a shot clock reset in the final minute of overtime to prevent teams from holding the ball for extended periods of time.

Overall, the 2024-25 season has brought some interesting developments to how OT works in sports. Whether it’s the NFL’s modified sudden death format, the NHL’s 3-on-3 overtime, or potential changes in the NBA, one thing is clear – OT is as exciting as ever. Stay tuned to NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth for all the latest updates on how OT is shaping the game in the 2024-25 season.

  • Eagles’ Nick Sirianni will rest Saquon Barkley, other starters in Week 18 – NBC Sports Philadelphia

Eagles’ Nick Sirianni will rest Saquon Barkley, other starters in Week 18 – NBC Sports Philadelphia

As the Eagles approach their Week 18 game against the Giants, head coach Nick Sirianni answered the question everyone had been asking.

“We’re gonna rest some guys,” Sirianni said on Wednesday afternoon. “I know we’re locked into that No. 2 seed, so we’re going to rest some guys.”

The Eagles are locked into the No. 2 seed in the NFC playoffs entering their regular season finale against the Giants on Sunday at the Linc and are going to take the opportunity to sit some key players heading into the playoffs.

    That includes Saquon Barkley.

The status of Barkley was the real intrigue this week because he is sitting at 2,005 rushing yards on the season. He’s one of just nine players in NFL history to  hit 2,000 rushing yards in a season and is just 101 yards away from breaking the all-time single-season record set by Eric Dickerson back in 1984.

That 40-year-old record will be safe for at least one more year.

“Obviously, it’s a very special record that’s been standing for a very long time by a very great player,” Sirianni said. “It’s a team record that everybody’s involved in. You weigh all those things. But at the end of the day, you just try to do what’s best for you the team.”

Sirianni didn’t want to get into the specifics of his conversation with Barkley but said communication was important after making this decision. Barkley has been known for his selflessness in his special season.

Sirianni said he consulted with players, general manager Howie Roseman and owner Jeffrey Lurie but ultimately said the decision to rest key starters this weekend was his.

While several players were pushing to play to give Barkley an opportunity to break the record, the risk was too great. The Eagles want to be as healthy as possible entering their wild card game in a couple weeks against either the Packers or Commanders.

Ultimately, the Eagles want to win a Super Bowl. And a week of rest for some key players is a big deal, especially considering the Eagles have played 12 straight weeks since their early Week 5 bye.

“That definitely played into all the decisions here, our bye week being Week 5, very early bye week,” Sirianni said. “And so it’s very valuable to be in this position to do that. And so, again, this isn’t our first time having to do this. We’ve had experience with this. A lot of that went into planning all these things. We want to use this week to continue to get better.”

Because NFL rosters are somewhat limited and teams are allowed just two practice squad elevations per week, it’s not like every contributing player can sit this weekend. Several will have to play significant snaps and some will have to be dressed as backups in case of injury.

For the non-starters, though, Sunday will be an opportunity to get some regular season NFL action.

“What an opportunity for some of the guys who are going to be playing that maybe don’t get as many reps,” Sirianni said. “Huge, huge, huge opportunity for some people to do it in an NFL regular season game. Again, this isn’t the first time we’ve been in this scenario. You look back at your notes from that, you always grow from things that you go through with these scenarios but excited for these guys and their opportunity to go out and play.”

The Philadelphia Eagles’ head coach Nick Sirianni has announced that star running back Saquon Barkley and other key starters will be rested in Week 18, as reported by NBC Sports Philadelphia. This decision comes as the Eagles have already secured their playoff spot and are looking to prioritize the health and well-being of their players heading into the postseason.

Sirianni stated that it is important for the team to be at full strength and have all their players available for the playoffs, and that resting key players in the final regular-season game will help achieve that goal. While some fans may be disappointed to not see Barkley and other starters in action, the team’s long-term success is the top priority.

With their playoff spot secured, the Eagles will be looking to finish the regular season strong and carry that momentum into the postseason. Fans can expect to see some younger and less experienced players getting more playing time in Week 18 as the team prepares for the challenges ahead.

Overall, this decision to rest key starters shows the Eagles’ commitment to their players’ health and readiness for the playoffs. It will be interesting to see how the team performs in their final regular-season game and how these changes will impact their postseason run.

  • What is norovirus and what are symptoms? What to know as cases rise – NBC Chicago

What is norovirus and what are symptoms? What to know as cases rise – NBC Chicago

Cases of norovirus are surging in parts of the United States this winter, according to data from to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and with holiday gatherings set to continue this week, what should you look for?

The stomach bug has been known to cause vomiting, diarrhea and more.

With the latest outbreaks, officials are urging people to take precautions.

    Here’s what to know:

    What is norovirus?

Norovirus — also referred to as “the stomach bug” or “food poisoning” — is characterized by sudden vomiting and diarrhea. Outbreaks are often seen on cruise ships, in congregate living situations like nursing homes and jails, as well as schools and places where people are close together.

According to the CDC, norovirus is the leading cause of foodborne illness in the United States, responsible for 58% of such infections acquired in the country each year.

Norovirus infections are caused by a group of viruses that spread easily, with as few as 10 viral particles having the ability to make someone sick, health experts say.

There are about 2,500 norovirus outbreaks reported annually in the United States. The outbreaks can occur throughout the year but are most common from November to April.

How many cases are being reported and where?

The most recent numbers from the CDC show there were 91 outbreaks of norovirus reported during the week of Dec. 5, up from 69 outbreaks the last week of November.

Numbers from the past few years show a maximum of 65 outbreaks reported during that first week of December.

Norovirus outbreaks occur throughout the year, the CDC said, but are most common November through April. Outbreaks typically occur when an infected person spreads the virus through direct contact, like sharing eating utensils or food at a group gathering, holiday party or restaurant.

So far this month, “several small outbreaks” of suspected norovirus cases were reported to the Chicago Department of Public Health, a spokesperson said.

“This is not out of the ordinary for this time of year,” the spokesperson added.

    What are symptoms of norovirus?

Along with vomiting and diarrhea, the most common symptoms include nausea, stomach pain, body ache, headache and fever.

But one other thing to watch for if you suspect you have norovirus is dehydration.

“If you have norovirus illness, you can feel extremely ill, and vomit or have diarrhea many times a day. This can lead to dehydration (loss of body fluids), especially in young children, older adults, and people with other illnesses,” the CDC noted.

    Symptoms of dehydration include:

    • Decreased urination
    • Dry mouth and throat
    • Feeling dizzy when standing up
    • Crying with few or no tears
    • Unusual sleepiness or fussiness

    How does norovirus spread?

Most norovirus outbreaks occur when people who are already infected spread the virus to others by direct means, such as through sharing food or eating utensils. Outbreaks can also be spread through food, water or contaminated surfaces.

    How long does it last?

Illness caused by norovirus typically starts suddenly, with symptoms developing 12 to 48 hours following exposure to the virus. Most people get better within one to three days and recover fully.

But with 19 to 21 million illnesses each year in the United States, norovirus nevertheless causes on average 900 deaths and 109,000 hospitalizations annually, mostly among adults aged 65 and older. It also leads to 465,000 emergency department visits, mostly involving young children.

    How can you treat norovirus?

There is no medication to treat norovirus. Rehydration is recommended by drinking water and other liquids, with the exception of coffee, tea and alcohol.

Anyone suffering from dehydration should seek medical help. Symptoms of dehydration include a decrease in urination, dry mouth and throat, and feeling dizzy when standing. Dehydrated children may be unusually sleepy or fussy and cry with few or no tears.

How to protect yourself from norovirus

Rigorous and frequent handwashing is the best defense against norovirus during the peak winter season, scrubbing the hands with soap and warm water for 20 seconds before meals.

Scrubbing surfaces with household disinfectants can also help.

Norovirus is a highly contagious virus that causes stomach and intestinal inflammation, leading to symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, and nausea. It is commonly referred to as the “stomach flu” or “winter vomiting bug” and can spread easily through contaminated food, water, surfaces, and person-to-person contact.

As cases of norovirus rise, it is important to be aware of the symptoms and take precautions to prevent its spread. Symptoms typically appear 12 to 48 hours after exposure and can last for 1 to 3 days. In addition to the gastrointestinal symptoms, some individuals may also experience fever, headache, and body aches.

To prevent norovirus, it is recommended to wash hands frequently with soap and water, especially after using the bathroom or changing diapers, and before preparing or eating food. Cleaning and disinfecting surfaces regularly, avoiding close contact with infected individuals, and practicing good food safety habits can also help reduce the risk of infection.

If you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms of norovirus, it is important to stay hydrated and rest, as the virus can cause dehydration. In severe cases, medical attention may be necessary to prevent complications.

Stay informed and stay healthy as cases of norovirus continue to rise. Remember to practice good hygiene habits and take steps to protect yourself and others from infection.

Why is Raising Cane’s in Allston closed? – NBC Boston

There’s a puzzling odor inside the Raising Cane’s restaurant in Boston’s Allston neighborhood.

Eager customers were surprised to find the popular hot spot on on Commonwealth Avenue near Boston University is suddenly shut down.

“Very disappointing,” said customer Marianne Najjar.

According to a Boston Inspectional Services report obtained by NBC10 Boston, a complaint came in about a foul odor in the restaurant.

When an inspector arrived to check it out, she also noticed the smell.

The person in charge at the restaurant said it had been like that for several weeks and they hired plumbers and HVAC technicians, but nothing helped, and they couldn’t figure out the source of the stench.

“It bothered me,” said customer Vince Watzker. “We weren’t sure if we wanted to come back to this one.”

Watzker noticed the odor at his last visit, but still felt like returning.

“I just wanted Cane’s, so I was willing to do it, but I wasn’t looking forward to going in there and ordering, because I remember the smell,” he said.

The inspector instructed the restaurant to shut down until the odor is identified and resolved.

Raising Cane’s acknowledged to NBC10 Boston the restaurant is shut down for repairs, but wouldn’t go into any more details.

Unfortunately, it seems that the popular chicken finger restaurant, Raising Cane’s, located in Allston has closed its doors. Many loyal customers are left wondering what could have led to this sudden closure. Was it due to financial issues, a lease disagreement, or maybe even a decline in customer traffic?

NBC Boston investigates the reasons behind Raising Cane’s closure in Allston. Stay tuned for updates and insights into this unexpected turn of events.

  • Luzardo discusses trade to Phillies, thinks he’s past back injury – NBC Sports Philadelphia

Luzardo discusses trade to Phillies, thinks he’s past back injury – NBC Sports Philadelphia

Jesus Luzardo was getting ready for a relaxing Sunday morning on the lake eight days ago when he received a call from the Marlins telling him he had been traded to the Phillies.

He didn’t expect the news that morning but was aware he could be on the move this offseason because of an increasing salary and the Marlins’ perpetual rebuild.

“I was getting ready to go fish, I actually got the call right before I got out on the boat,” Luzardo said Monday afternoon via Zoom.

“I could kind of see the writing on the wall but it’s always a big change, your life’s turned upside down. But definitely for a positive impact, I would say. I’m looking forward to it.”

Luzardo fills out the Phillies’ rotation and if he’s close to the pitcher he was in 2022 and 2023, they should boast baseball’s best and deepest starting staff with himself, Zack Wheeler, Aaron Nola, Cristopher Sanchez and Ranger Suarez. In 50 starts over those two seasons, Luzardo pitched to a 3.48 ERA with 328 strikeouts in 279 innings. His opponents hit .223.

A lefty with his velocity, secondary pitches and results could pitch as a No. 2 in most rotations. If he can stay healthy …

That is the big if, and the reason why the Luzardo trade cost the Phillies talented 19-year-old infielder Starlyn Caba but not one of their top three prospects (Andrew Painter, Aidan Miller, Justin Crawford). Luzardo missed two weeks last season with elbow tightness and did not pitch after June 16 because of a stress reaction in his lower back.

He is optimistic, though, about being past the back injury based on how he has felt this offseason and what he’s heard from doctors.

“I feel 100%, I’ve felt 100% the whole offseason,” he said. “Last year, the back was really the root of the issue and the problem. Now that we’ve got that figured out, thankfully everything is back to normal.

“The stress reaction was just basically a vertebra on the spine getting bothered by constant stress, constant rotation or the lack of rotation. At one point, it just gets really irritated. It bothered me doing a lot of things — tying my shoes, bending over, brushing my teeth, rotating on the mound. It definitely affected me in a lot of different ways and it was frustrating trying to maneuver that and still get out there and pitch every five days. It just got to a point where I couldn’t do it anymore.

“I took time off and the doctors all said the same thing: These things actually heal really well, and once it happens once, it usually doesn’t happen again. It’s more of just letting it calm down, letting it heal itself.”

Luzardo is 27 years old and isn’t set for free agency until after the 2026 season. He projects to earn $6 million through arbitration this offseason and might cost a total of $17-18M over the next two. Beyond the rotation boost he should provide the Phillies, that’s significant and necessary financial value compared to what starting pitchers are receiving in free agency.

The Red Sox last week signed Patrick Sandoval to a two-year, $18.25M contract and he won’t even pitch in the first half this season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in June. Frankie Montas, a No. 4/5 starter, signed for $34M over two years with the Mets. Matthew Boyd, another back-end starter who hasn’t pitched a full season in five years, signed for $29M over two years with the Cubs.

Luzardo is younger than them all with a substantially higher ceiling and will likely earn less than them all in 2025 and 2026, which matters for a Phillies team already over the fourth and final luxury tax threshold of $301 million. Every dollar matters this offseason, as outlined here. The penalties are harsh. The Phillies are essentially paying double for every player they add.

“We asked about Luzardo a couple times during the winter just to check in, and then it happened very quickly last week,” president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said just before Christmas.

“We’ve liked him for a few years. He was down for a while last year, we did very thorough medicals and felt comfortable with where he is.”

So does Luzardo, who got started a bit earlier than usual this offseason to ease his transition into 2025. While he can’t guarantee the back injury won’t return, he’s put it out of his mind and thrown freely since the season ended.

“I don’t have the exact answer because I don’t know how I’ll feel in two, three, four, five years, but from what I’ve understood, once it heals, it calcifies or hardens up and you don’t have an issue again,” he said. “I’ve been able to get up on the mound, do what I need to do without any pain, no symptoms. Haven’t really thought of it or felt it, so hopefully it’s something that’s just behind me and never have to think about it again. That’s the understanding that I’ve gotten from these doctors so I’m not really worried about it right now.”

In a recent interview with NBC Sports Philadelphia, Oakland Athletics pitcher Jesus Luzardo opened up about the trade that sent him to the Philadelphia Phillies and his confidence in overcoming his past back injury.

Luzardo, who was acquired by the Phillies in a trade deadline deal, expressed his excitement about joining a new team and is looking forward to the opportunity to contribute to their pitching staff. The 23-year-old left-hander acknowledged that being traded can be a bittersweet experience, but he is focused on making the most of his new opportunity.

When asked about his past back injury, which has been a concern for some teams, Luzardo was confident in his ability to stay healthy and perform at a high level. He emphasized that he has worked hard to address any lingering issues and believes he is past the injury that sidelined him earlier in his career.

Phillies fans can look forward to seeing Luzardo take the mound and showcase his talent in the coming season. With his positive attitude and determination to succeed, Luzardo is poised to make a significant impact for his new team. Stay tuned for more updates on Luzardo’s journey with the Phillies.

A large crowd of people packed the Embarcadero for the annual fireworks show at the stroke of midnight.

The fireworks was launched from a barge stationed between the Ferry Building and the Bay Bridge.

It’s a 15-minute display that the producer said is a special show just for the City by the Bay.

At lunchtime, the California Hornblower steam boat was already making it’s New Year’s Eve lunch run. It will be cruising just before midnight as well.

Outside Chase Center at midday, some people had their own 2025 countdown for what organizers called a celebration for those who don’t plan on staying up until midnight.

Suspect in DTLA Target shooting barricaded inside Westlake district residence – NBC Los Angeles

A man accused of shooting two people outside a Target store in downtown Los Angeles has been arrested following an hourslong standoff at an apartment in Westlake.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the stand-off started around 11:30 a.m. in the 1200 block of Ingraham Street in the Westlake District. The standoff came to an end around 4:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Earlier Tuesday, LAPD said they were searching for the gunman after an armed security guard and store employee who were trying to stop a shoplifter were shot near a Target in a downtown Los Angeles shopping mall.

Officers were called to the 700 block of S. Figueroa Street for a report of a shooting just before 9 p.m. on Monday. Two people were found with gunshot wounds at the FIGat7th shopping mall, where police said the security guard and Target employee tried to stop a shoplifter.

The man seen on store security camera video walked out of the store with unpaid merchandise in a suitcase and was confronted by the guard and employee, police said. The man armed with a handgun opened fire, sending shoppers running for cover.

One of the victims, a 33-year-old armed security officer employed by the mall, returned fire, police said. It was not immediately clear whether the gunman was struck.

The other victim was a 45-year-old Target loss-prevention employee, LAPD Capt. Raul Jovel said.

The armed guard was treated and released from a hospital. The Target employee remained in critical condition Tuesday afternoon.

Season-to-date, Chicago Fire is averaging 7.8 million total viewers making it NBC’s top-rated non-sports program as well as the fourth most-watched drama on all of broadcast TV. • Chicago teen in coma after family shot during birthday vacation to Mexico – NBC Chicago

Chicago teen in coma after family shot during birthday vacation to Mexico – NBC Chicago

A Chicago teenager’s birthday celebration trip to Mexico turned into a family nightmare when the teen and multiple relatives were shot along a roadside in the north-central state of Durango.

Vicente Peña Jr., 38, and Antonio “Tony” Fernandez, 44, both from Chicago’s Logan Square neighborhood, were killed in the attack, along with 22-year-old Jorge Eduardo Vargas Aguirre, according to police. The teen, whose name hasn’t been released, his father and uncle traveled to Mexico to celebrate the 14-year-old’s birthday when the shooting occurred near the town of Las Palmas.

The teenager was seriously injured and placed in a medically-induced coma.

“I feel very devastated because they wiped out my entire family,” said Vicente Peña, the father of Vicente Peña Jr., who died in the shooting, as well as the grandfather of the injured teenager.

According to authorities, the group was traveling in an SUV with Illinois license plates when they were attacked in what officials described as a surge in violent crime in the area.

Relatives on Monday continued to plead for answers on how the shooting unfolded – and who was responsible – as what exactly transpired remained unclear.

“It was a massacre….because my son was shot four times in the head and once in the shoulder, and the other boy was also shot four times, once in the shoulder, and the other boy who was with them was also shot three times,” Peña said, translated from Spanish.

Relatives asked that the teenager be transferred to the U.S. to receive specialized medical care, but doctors in Mexico didn’t recommend the transfer, citing his fragile condition.

“I ask for justice,” Maria Elena Hernandez, the teen’s maternal grandmother said, translated from Spanish. “My child is a studious child. He is studying boxing. Thank God he will not leave us now, but they will not provide insurance for him anymore.”

The non-profit group United Giving Hope is helping the family with their efforts to bring the boy back to the U.S. As the non-profit seeks support for the teenager, its leadership issued a warning about a scam using his family’s name.

“Unfortunately, there are criminals who also exist here in the United States who commit fraud, and there is an account right now that is in the media circles that does not belong to the Peña family,” said Julie Contreras with United Giving Hope.

Relatives hope to give Peña Jr. and Fernandez a proper burial in Chicago in approximately two weeks.

This is a tragic story that has shocked the Chicago community. A teenage girl is currently in a coma after her family was shot during a birthday vacation to Mexico. The family was celebrating the girl’s birthday when they were caught in the crossfire of a violent attack.

The girl’s parents and siblings were also injured in the shooting, but the teenage girl’s injuries were the most severe. She is currently fighting for her life in a hospital in Mexico.

The family had traveled to Mexico to celebrate the girl’s birthday and were looking forward to a fun and relaxing vacation. Instead, they found themselves in the middle of a terrifying and senseless act of violence.

Authorities in Mexico are investigating the shooting, but so far no arrests have been made. The family’s loved ones back in Chicago are devastated and are praying for the teenage girl’s recovery.

This is a heartbreaking reminder of the dangers that can exist when traveling to unfamiliar places, and our thoughts are with the family during this difficult time.

A man is recovering on New Year’s Eve after being violently pushed onto subway tracks in front of an upcoming chain in Chelsea, law enforcement sources tell NBC New York.

The 45-year-old victim was struck by a southbound no. 1 train at the 18th Street station just after 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to the NYPD.

He was taken to Bellevue Hospital with injuries to his head and a broken rib, but was conscious and alert, and is expected to survive, a law enforcement source tells NBC New York.

The NYPD said Tuesday evening it has a 23-year-old person of interest in custody, who has multiple prior arrests for assault and harassment, according to law enforcement sources.

Surveillance video obtained by NBC New York, which is difficult to watch, appears to show the victim was checking his phone when he was pushed from the platform by someone wearing a jacket with a hood over his head just moments before the train arrived at the station.

No. 1 trains were skipping the 18 St station Tuesday afternoon and the 1, 2 and 3 trains were running with details in both directions, according to the MTA.
