Flood advisories issued for the North Bay, East Bay – NBC Bay Area
The National Weather Service issued flood advisories for the North Bay and East Bay as another round of rain moves in to drench the region over the weekend.
The advisories are in effect until Friday morning for parts of Marin, Sonoma and Alameda counties, where excessive rainfall could lead to urban area and small stream flooding.
Further north, a flood warning has been issued for the the Russian River near Hopland, where minor flooding is forecast. The warning is effective late Thursday through Friday afternoon.
Just days after part of the Santa Cruz wharf collapsed into the water, coastal communities are facing another round of powerful waves. Jocelyn Moran reports.
A high surf advisory is also in place through 4 p.m. Sunday as large waves continue to hammer the coast. Breaking waves of 20-30 feet will peak on Friday and lessen through Saturday, forecasters said.
“While these waves are smaller than the monsters we got on Monday, the coast is still dangerous,” the weather service warned. “Inexperienced swimmers should stay out of the water, wave watchers should maintain a a safe distance, and no one should ever turn their back on the ocean.”
Rainfall totals through Saturday morning are forecast to be 1-1.5 inches for the North Bay valleys and 1.5 to 3 inches for the North Bay mountains, forecasters said.
The San Francisco Peninsula and the East Bay can expect a half-inch to 1 inch of rain. South Bay valleys are forecast for a quarter- to a half-inch, and South Bay mountains, a half-inch to 1.5 inches.
Attention residents of the North Bay and East Bay areas: Flood advisories have been issued by local authorities due to heavy rainfall and rising water levels in the region. Please take precautions and stay informed about any potential evacuation orders or road closures. It is important to stay vigilant and prepared during this time, as flooding can happen quickly and without warning. Make sure to have an emergency kit ready with essentials such as food, water, and medications, and have a plan in place for evacuation if necessary.
Stay tuned to local news outlets and weather updates for the latest information on the flooding situation in your area. Remember to never drive through flooded roadways and to avoid walking or playing near swollen rivers and creeks.

Jonathan Kuminga scores 26 in loss to Clippers – NBC Sports Bay Area & California
The third time wasn’t the charm for the Warriors on Friday night against the LA Clippers, as they lost 102-92 at Intuit Dome.
The Warriors now have played the Clippers three times this season and have lost all three games.
Without Steph Curry and Draymond Green, the Warriors couldn’t generate any offense most of the night. They scored 21 points in the first quarter, 22 in the second and 19 in the third before exploding for 30 in the fourth.
Jonathan Kuminga did show up offensively. All night long, he dominated around the rim, leading to a career-high 34 points. He was extremely efficient, going 11 of 19 from the field, with most of his points coming in the paint. He also made a career-high 11 free throws, missing just three times at the charity stripe.

— Warriors on NBCS (@NBCSWarriors) December 28, 2024
If only others around Kuminga could say the same. The Warriors battled until the very end, trailing by as many as 21 points and 19 going into the fourth quarter, though it simply wasn’t enough short-handed on the first night of a back-to-back.
After starting the season 12-3, the Warriors now have gone 3-12 in their last 15 games.
Here are three takeaways from the Warriors’ latest loss, dropping them to 15-15 on the season.
Kuminga Came Ready
Before Friday night, the Warriors had been without Curry and Green once this season. The result was a six-point win against the Houston Rockets on Dec. 5 where Kuminga had perhaps the best game of his young career.
Kuminga in that contest started at power forward and played 33 minutes. He scored a then-career-high 33 points on 13-of-22 shooting, grabbed seven rebounds and was a plus-7. Starting him with Green and Curry out again Friday night in LA seemed likely, yet Steve Kerr went a different way. Instead, Kerr started Kyle Anderson at power forward to play the Green role as a point-forward and kept Kuminga off the bench.
And Kuminga answered his coach’s challenge, playing aggressively under control, using movement to get easy buckets. Despite coming off the bench, he was the Warriors’ leading scorer after the first quarter with five points and led both teams with 13 points at halftime on 4-of-8 shooting and made all four of his free throws. Through three quarters, Kuminga was up to 19 points, but no other Warrior was in double figures.

— Warriors on NBCS (@NBCSWarriors) December 28, 2024
Kuminga now has scored at least 25 points in two of his last three games, and has nine 20-point games this season.
Kuminga also had 10 rebounds and five assists, marking the first 30-10-5 game of his four-year NBA career.

Schroder Keeps Struggling
The Dennis Schroder the Warriors acquired from the Brooklyn Nets has not been the same player since changing his number and wearing different colors. His shooting woes continued at the worst possible time.
A game without Curry should have been an invitation for Schroder to have the ball in his hands and take over. It was not. Kerr did get the ball in Schroder’s control, but he just kept falling short.
Literally. Schroder scored seven points on 3-of-11 shooting and missed all six of his 3-pointers, giving him four single-digit scoring nights in his five games as a Warrior. He seems to be short on everything right now. That’s not something to blame on Kerr. The coach ran pick-and-roll time and time again for Schroder, but nothing could get him going.
Schröder’s save sets up a Buddy dunk pic.twitter.com/2MrCmgajE3
— Warriors on NBCS (@NBCSWarriors) December 28, 2024
In 23 games with the Nets this season, Schroder was 45.2 percent from the field and 38.7 percent from three. Now in five games as a Warrior, Schroder has made a lowly 28 percent of his shots overall (14 of 50) and is shooting 17.4 percent from 3-point range (4 of 23).
Wiggins? Buddy? Hello?
Schroder was far from the only reason the Warriors’ offense was the puke emoji in human form. Whenever the Warriors don’t have Curry on the court, everybody else has to step up. So much for that.
Andrew Wiggins gave Golden State nothing offensively, and neither did Buddy Hield.
The Warriors’ second-best 3-point shooter, Hield, took six threes and was successful just once. Hield’s nine rebounds were a season-high, but that’s not what he’s here to do. His No. 1 job is to score points and hit threes, which he didn’t do much of in Inglewood.
Hield scored five points on 2-of-8 shooting in 22 minutes. Somehow, he was better than Wiggins.
Golden State’s second-leading scorer coming into the game behind only Curry totaled five points as well. Wiggins was 1 of 3 from deep, and made just one of his eight 2-pointers as well. His five points are tied for a season-low.
The reeling Warriors have to learn how to win with and without Curry right now. The main players who should be able to step up in his absence were no shows.

In a tough matchup against the Los Angeles Clippers, Jonathan Kuminga put on an impressive performance, scoring 26 points for the Golden State Warriors. Despite his standout efforts, the Warriors fell short to the Clippers, with a final score of 112-106.Kuminga, the 7th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, showcased his offensive prowess and versatility on the court, shooting 10-17 from the field and 3-5 from beyond the arc. The young forward also added 8 rebounds and 3 assists to his stat line, proving to be a valuable asset for the Warriors.
Although the outcome was not in their favor, Kuminga’s standout performance is certainly a bright spot for the Warriors as they continue to navigate through the NBA season. With his potential and talent, Kuminga is proving to be a promising player to watch in the league.
Stay tuned for more updates on Jonathan Kuminga and the Golden State Warriors as they look to bounce back from this loss and continue their pursuit of success in the NBA.

FOXBORO — What are the stakes? The Patriots have very little to play for when it comes to the standings. If anything, there should be some level of attempting to at the very least match last year’s atrocious four-win record.
Yet, the stakes exist. They exist for a coaching staff with a couple of coordinators whose seats should be warm with the offseason approaching. They exist for a roster full of players whose 2025 whereabouts are uncertain, needing to put out as much competent tape as possible as they hope to earn jobs for next season.
And they exist for Patriots decision-makers, who need to use the football left to get a real gauge on what they have in their young players as they look to build their team for the future.
Layden Robinson has acquitted himself relatively well in the last two games while allowing just one pressure. He’s one of just eight guards in the NFL with at least 75 total snaps in Weeks 16 and 17 who has allowed less than two pressures in that span. Perhaps he’s on track to take on the team’s starting left guard role next season.
Cole Strange is looking like he’ll start at center in Week 17, giving him a chance to show what he can do after missing most of the season following a knee injury that ended his 2023 campaign prematurely.
At receiver, the outlook is less positive. It’s my understanding that Ja’Lynn Polk was discussed by the Patriots as a healthy scratch prior to the Bills game, and he ended up playing only three snaps in that game. Javon Baker appears to have worked his way beyond Polk on the depth chart, but not in a significant way, playing eight snaps in Buffalo.
On Polk in particular, one would assume the team hoped coming off its bye week in Week 14 that their second-round pick would be able to settle in and make a push toward salvaging the back end of his first year as a pro. Instead, he appears to be trending in the wrong direction. And New England’s opponent Sunday is just another reminder as to what might’ve been had the team approached the second round differently back in the spring.
Sitting at pick No. 34 overall, the Patriots watched Florida State wideout Keon Coleman go to the Bills at No. 33. Then, bypassing an opportunity to draft Georgia wideout Ladd McConkey, Eliot Wolf traded down to pick No. 37, sending a fifth-round pick and receiving a fourth-rounder from the Chargers in the process.
The Chargers grabbed McConkey and have reaped the rewards, as he’s racked up 69 catches for 960 yards and five touchdowns. In 14 games, Polk has 12 catches for 87 yards and two scores. Baker, whom the Patriots selected with the fourth-rounder acquired in the deal, hasn’t made a reception.
The evaluation continues on Sunday. Here are the matchups to watch in the game…
Matchup that’ll determine the outcome
Drake Maye vs. Derwin James
The Chargers have a fast-flowing defense led by their Swiss Army knife safety Derwin James. If the Patriots are going to continue to attack through the air with their short passing game, they may have trouble finding room to operate Sunday.
Per Next Gen Stats, Drake Maye is the one of the best short passers in football. On passes that travel less than 10 yards beyond the line of scrimmage, he has the sixth-best yards-per-attempt figure (6.6) and the sixth-best success rate (56.1 percent). However, the Chargers only allow 5.4 yards per attempt on those types of throws, which is the third-best among NFL defenses this season.
If New England can’t move the chains with shorter throws because James and Co. suffocate them, this one could be over quickly. Unless…
Matchup that’ll surprise you
Chargers defense versus Alex Van Pelt
…The Chargers continue to play the way they’ve played the last two weeks on the defensive side of the ball. The Buccaneers put up 40 points against them two weeks ago. Last week, Jim Harbaugh’s club had its issues at times keeping Bo Nix and the Broncos in check.
The advanced numbers from those two games aren’t kind to Los Angeles. They’re 28th in EPA per play allowed and 29th in EPA per dropback allowed.
If that continues at Gillette Stadium, perhaps offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt can draw up some plays for Maye to run his touchdown pass streak to eight games — the longest streak for any rookie since Justin Herbert threw for touchdowns in 10 straight games back in 2020.
Matchup that’ll take years off your life
Justin Herbert vs. Patriots pass rushers
Keion White made headlines late this week when he seemed to voice some displeasure with what he’s been asked to do as an outside linebacker. He’s been asked to be sound against the run. His pass-rush numbers — and those of the entire team — have been down. Apparently, that’s led to some displeasure for the second-year defender.
If he can’t get after the quarterback again this week, it could be a long day for his team, because Herbert is dynamite when not pressured. He’s seventh in the league in yards per attempt when not pressured (8.3), eighth in rating (110.5), and he hasn’t thrown a pick when kept clean.
Unfortunately for the Patriots, they see a lot of passing reps from opposing quarterbacks who aren’t pressured. They’re fourth-worst in the NFL in quarterback pressure rate (29.7 percent).
Ja’Lynn Polk trending in wrong direction? – NBC Sports BostonIn recent weeks, Texas Tech wide receiver Ja’Lynn Polk has been making headlines for all the wrong reasons. Once considered a promising young talent, Polk’s performance on and off the field has raised concerns among fans and analysts alike.
On the field, Polk’s production has dipped significantly compared to earlier in the season. His route running has been sloppy, leading to dropped passes and missed opportunities for big plays. Additionally, his lack of effort in blocking assignments has not gone unnoticed by coaches.
Off the field, Polk’s behavior has been cause for even more concern. Reports of tardiness to team meetings and a lack of focus during practice have raised red flags about his commitment to the team and his future in the sport.
While Polk has shown flashes of potential in the past, it seems that he may be heading in the wrong direction. If he doesn’t make a drastic change soon, his once-promising career may be in jeopardy. Stay tuned for updates on Ja’Lynn Polk’s situation as it develops.

The Commanders have cut ties to another early-round draft pick from their previous regime.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that they waived defensive tackle Phidarian Mathis on Saturday. Mathis was a second-round pick in 2022 and the Commanders have also parted ways with 2023 first-round pick Emmanuel Forbes and 2022 first-round pick Jahan Dotson in recent months.
The move may be a precursor to activating one of the few top picks from the past who remains with the team. Defensive tackle Jonathan Allen was a full participant in practice this week as he works his way back from a pectoral injury.
Mathis had 25 tackles, a pass defensed, and a fumble recovery in 23 games for Washington.
The Washington Commanders have decided to waive defensive tackle Phidarian Mathis, according to a report from NBC Sports. Mathis, a former fifth-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, was released by the team after failing to make an impact during his time with the organization. The decision to waive Mathis comes as a bit of a surprise, as he was expected to be a key contributor on the defensive line for the Commanders. However, it appears that his performance in training camp and the preseason did not meet the team’s expectations, leading to his release.
Mathis will now be placed on waivers, where he will have the opportunity to be claimed by another team. If he is not claimed, he will become a free agent and will be free to sign with any team in the league.
It remains to be seen whether Mathis will be able to find a new team to continue his NFL career. In the meantime, the Commanders will move forward without him as they prepare for the upcoming season.

With the rise in holiday gatherings during respiratory virus season, what symptoms should you watch for if you think you have been exposed to COVID?
According to “virus hunter” Mary Rodgers, an associate research fellow at Abbott who has been tracking COVID variants around the world, the XEC variant remains dominant in the U.S.
“We’ve continued to see COVID evolving, and that’s to be expected, actually,” Rodgers told NBC Chicago. “As people’s immune responses develop to one strain, the virus is motivated to change so it can escape from those immune responses. And that’s what we’re seeing today.”
According to Rodgers and the World Health Organization, the XEC variant has not shown signs of being more dangerous than other recent COVID strains, “but it is changing.”
“So we need to keep an eye on it,” Rodgers said.
Rodgers noted the importance of tracking symptoms when it comes to COVID variants in particular.
“That’s how Omicron was first discovered,” she said. “Actually, our partner that we work with in South Africa noticed that amongst a group of people in an area that had already recently had a COVID wave, suddenly they were having more severe symptoms and that alerted him that we needed to sequence those samples to see what strain was present. And fast forward, after he got those sequence data back, he alerted the WHO that this was a new variant of concern and that was when Omicron was first named.”
As for XEC, Rodgers said the symptoms remain unchanged so far.
But what are they and how can you tell the difference between COVID and the myriad of other respiratory infections spreading this holiday season?
Here’s what to know:
What are the symptoms?
Experts have so far said the XEC variant shows signs it will remain similar to other variants.
As of now, the symptoms for COVID remain the same:
- Cough
- Sore throat
- Runny nose
- Sneezing
- Fatigue
- Headache
- Muscle aches
- Altered sense of smell
- Congestion
- Fever or chills
- Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
- Nausea or vomiting
- Diarrhea
Earlier reports had centered on potential gastrointestinal symptoms related to the virus.
Dr. Katelyn Jetelina, a scientific consultant for the CDC and epidemiologist, said “gastrointestinal issues including nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea” have been previously identified as possible symptoms of COVID-19.
“We do not have specific data about the incidence of GI symptoms with the current strains of the virus, but COVID-19 symptoms can certainly differ based on the variant and the individual,” Jetelina told NBC Chicago in July.
Last fall, a Chicago-area doctor said she’s noticed shifts in the most common symptoms her patients reported as the JN.1 variant rose to dominance.
Dr. Chantel Tinfang, a family medicine physician with Sengstacke Health Center at Provident Hospital of Cook County, noted at the time that many of the cases she saw reported less of the fever, body aches and chills, and presented more with sore throat, fatigue and coughing.
“We still see some patients experiencing decreased appetite, a loss of taste or smell. So it kind of depends,” she said. “One patient was just very, very tired. Like she couldn’t really do much. And that’s when you know … it’s different. It’s not just coughing and shortness of breath. We still see that though.”
How long does COVID last?
As for timing, symptoms can last for several days, but in some cases, even longer.
“Some people who have been infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 can experience long-term effects from their infection, known as Long COVID or Post-COVID Conditions (PCC),” according to the CDC.
Such symptoms can last for weeks and possibly even years.
Previous timing guidelines centered around five to 10 days, however.
How can you tell the difference between COVID and other respiratory viruses?
Experts say the answer is to test.
“The thing is, a lot of these other pathogens have the same initial symptoms, so it’s really hard to tell if someone might have COVID versus flu just based on symptoms alone,” Rodgers said. “So you kind of have to check in with your health care provider to see what they would recommend. But obviously, testing is going to give you the definitive answer so that you’ll know whether or not your family has COVID or flu, which all kind of start with the same fever, sore throat, runny nose and a test is really key in those kinds of situations.”
When should you test?
Experts still say at-home testing can be done multiple times for people experiencing symptoms.
According to Rodgers, that’s because at-home tests are designed to detect infection when it’s at its highest.
“The home tests like Abbott’s Binaxnow are really intended to catch infections when people are at their most contagious. So then they have the highest levels of the virus present,” she said. “So that means that if you’re still feeling sick after a negative test, it would make sense to check in with your health care provider and possibly do another round of testing.”
What to do if you test positive?
In March, the CDC updated its COVID guidelines to mirror guidance for other respiratory infections. Those who contracted COVID-19 no longer need to stay away from others for five days, the CDC said, effectively nixing the five-day isolation recommendation.
People can return to work or regular activities if their symptoms are mild and improving and it’s been a day since they’ve had a fever, but the CDC still recommends those with symptoms stay home.
“The recommendations suggest returning to normal activities when, for at least 24 hours, symptoms are improving overall, and if a fever was present, it has been gone without use of a fever-reducing medication,” the guidance states.
Once activities are resumed, the CDC still recommends “additional prevention strategies” for an additional five days, including wearing a mask and keeping distance from others.
The agency is emphasizing that people should still try to prevent infections in the first place, by getting vaccinated, washing their hands, and taking steps to bring in more outdoor fresh air.
As part of the guidance, the CDC suggests:
- Staying up to date with vaccination to protect people against serious illness, hospitalization, and death. This includes flu, COVID-19, and RSV if eligible.
- Practicing good hygiene by covering coughs and sneezes, washing or sanitizing hands often, and cleaning frequently touched surfaces.
- Taking steps for cleaner air, such as bringing in more fresh outside air, purifying indoor air, or gathering outdoors.
The change comes at a time when COVID-19 is no longer the public health menace it once was. It dropped from being the nation’s third leading cause of death early in the pandemic to 10th last year.
Most people have some degree of immunity to the coronavirus from past vaccinations or from infections. And many people are not following the five-day isolation guidance anyway, some experts say.
Will vaccines prevent against the XEC variant?
Experts have long said the COVID virus will continue to mutate.
This fall’s vaccine recipe is tailored to a newer branch of omicron descendants. The Pfizer and Moderna shots target a subtype called KP.2 that was common earlier this year.
While additional offshoots, particularly KP.3.1.1, now are spreading, they’re closely enough related that the vaccines promise cross-protection. It is expected that the vaccines will provide some protection against XEC as well.
“We expect the latest updates to the vaccine to protect people from severe outcomes the same way that the previous versions have also been able to prevent more severe outcomes from the strain that’s currently circulating,” she said. “It’s kind of like how the flu has been in the past where mutations that allow it to spread every season are the ones that we’re combating with vaccines.
A Pfizer spokesman said the company submitted data to FDA showing its updated vaccine “generates a substantially improved response” against multiple virus subtypes compared to last fall’s vaccine.
This summer’s wave of COVID-19 isn’t over but winter surges tend to be worse. And while COVID-19 vaccines do a good job preventing severe disease, hospitalization and death, protection against mild infection lasts only a few months.
Where can you get free COVID tests?
On the heels of the summer wave of COVID-19 cases, Americans are now able to get free virus test kits mailed to their homes, with ordering opening in late September.
U.S. households will be able to order up to four COVID-19 nasal swab tests when the federal program reopens, according to the website, COVIDtests.gov. The U.S. Health and Human Services agency that oversees the testing has not announced an exact date for ordering to begin.
The tests will detect current virus strains and can be ordered ahead of the holiday season when family and friends gather for celebrations, an HHS spokesperson said in an emailed statement. Over-the-counter COVID-19 at-home tests typically cost around $11, as of last year.
“What experts say to watch for in the coming months”In a recent interview with NBC Chicago, experts in various fields shared their insights on what to keep an eye on in the near future. From economic trends to public health concerns, here are some key takeaways from the experts:
1. Economic indicators: According to financial analysts, it’s important to monitor key economic indicators such as inflation rates, job growth, and consumer spending. These factors can provide valuable insights into the overall health of the economy and help predict future trends.
2. Public health updates: With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, public health experts emphasize the importance of staying informed about the latest developments in the fight against the virus. This includes monitoring vaccination rates, new variants, and potential policy changes that could impact public health measures.
3. Climate change impacts: Environmental experts warn that the effects of climate change are becoming increasingly severe. It’s crucial to pay attention to events such as extreme weather events, rising sea levels, and biodiversity loss, as these can have far-reaching consequences for our planet.
4. Political shifts: Political analysts suggest keeping an eye on political developments both domestically and internationally. Changes in leadership, policy decisions, and global events can all have significant implications for various industries and markets.
Overall, staying informed and proactive is key to navigating the uncertainties of the future. By paying attention to these key areas highlighted by experts, individuals can better prepare themselves for whatever lies ahead.

Fans visit Fort Worth Stockyards ahead of Armed Forces Bowl – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth
It’s a sold-out game for Friday’s Armed Forces Bowl at Amon G. Carter Stadium in Fort Worth. Ahead of the showdown, fans are spending a little time enjoying the festive scene at the Stockyards.
It is the place to be in Fort Worth less than 24 hours ahead of kickoff. The Stockyards are known for having plenty to do and see during the holidays. This year, it only made sense for University of Oklahoma and Navy fans to get in on the festivities as well.
OU student and Texas native Kevin Daniel came out with his dad Jeff for a little pre-Bowl game excitement.
“Just to know something that’s really local for me so I don’t have to travel all the way to Birmingham, Alabama or Tampa, Florida. This is an hour drive from my house, and I get to see my team play,” said Daniel.
He said it was the perfect time to experience something for the first time.
“This is my first time ever going to the Stockyards, period. So just to kind of look around and see, even if you do some window shopping, just to see everything that’s going on here it’s definitely something I’d come back to,” he said.
The Fort Worth Stockyards bring in more than $134 million annually with retail and restaurants. An end-of-year Armed Forces Bowl in the city is certain to bring an additional boost, with Sooner fans rubbing shoulders with Navy fans.
“My daughter and her boyfriend are midshipmen so yeah, we’re going to the game,” said Todd McWhorter.
McWhorter said it only makes sense for his family to root for the Navy.
“Oh, we’re Texas fans too, so we hate OU. So, we’re looking forward to them beating OU,” he said.
And he said one of the best ways to bond, other than the game of course, is to spend time here.
“Her boyfriend is from out of town and so we like to bring him down here and show him around and it’s just a great opportunity,” he said.
The Armed Forces Bowl kicks off Friday at 11 a.m. Central Time.
