  • How Patriots can learn from Chiefs defense – NBC Sports Boston

The New England Patriots have obvious needs on offense, and we’ve talked about them a ton over the last several months. Left tackle and wide receiver are two huge areas of weakness for the AFC East franchise.

But a strong case could be made that, despite those needs on offense, the best path for the Patriots to take in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft is upgrading the defense.

Defense wins championships, even in an era where offense is so prevalent and so many teams in the AFC have a top-tier quarterback.

The Kansas City Chiefs are one win away from their third consecutive Super Bowl title, and even though superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes is one of the best players in league history, this team wouldn’t be on the doorstep of a title without an elite defense.

Patriots Talk Podcast: Why is hiring Josh McDaniels the best move for the Patriots offense? | Listen & Subscribe | Watch on YouTube

The Chiefs ranked 15th in points scored during the regular season at 22.6 per game. They ranked 15th in scoring last season, too. In addition to Mahomes’ late-game brilliance, one of the primary reasons for Kansas City’s success has been its defense.

The Chiefs ranked No. 2 in points allowed last season and finished No. 4 this past season. They allowed fewer than 20 points in five straight games from Week 13 through Week 17 to secure homefield advantage in the AFC playoffs.

How did the Chiefs build a great defense? It started with the draft. They had 11 players see snaps on defense in Sunday’s AFC Championship Game who were added between the 2020 and 2024 drafts, and that includes many of the unit’s most impactful players.

    • 2024: Jaden Hicks, DB, Round 4
    • 2023: Felix Anudike-Uzomah, DE, Round 1
    • 2022: Trent McDuffie, CB, Round 1
    • 2022: George Karlaftis III, DE, Round 1
    • 2022: Bryan Cook, S, Round 2
    • 2022: Leo Chenal, LB, Round 3
    • 2022: Joshua Williams, CB, Round 4
    • 2022: Jaylen Watson, CB, Round 7
    • 2022: Nazeeh Johnson, S, Round 7
    • 2021: Nick Bolton, LB, Round 2
    • 2020: Michael Danna, DE, Round 5

Notice all the Day 2 and Day 3 picks? That’s where teams really solidify their depth, and the Chiefs have done a great job of finding starters and useful players on defense in those middle to later rounds of the draft.

The best example is the Chiefs’ 2022 draft. They had seven players from that draft class tally at least one tackle on defense versus the Bills on Sunday. In comparison, just three of the 10 players the Patriots drafted in 2022 are still on the team (Cole Strange, Marcus Jones and Kevin Harris), and one of them (Harris) is on the practice squad.

Luckily for the Patriots, the 2025 draft class has a lot of good front seven players and cornerbacks. The highest-rated defensive player on the board is Penn State edge rusher Abdul Carter. The Patriots should absolutely consider taking him with the No. 4 pick, assuming he’s available at that point. New England’s pass rush ranked dead last in sacks with 28 this past season, and Carter would upgrade that group in a major way.

Colorado star and reigning Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter would give the Patriots another excellent cornerback opposite Christian Gonzalez. Michigan defensive tackle Mason Graham is another intriguing option, too.

The Patriots absolutely need to surround young quarterback Drake Maye with more high-end talent at the skill positions, but they can’t forget about the defense. New England’s defense took a huge step back in 2024, and reversing that trend needs to be a top priority over the offseason.

Which players could the Patriots target in Round 1? Here’s a roundup of recent expert mock drafts.

“The Patriots must help Drake Maye on the offensive line. I see Campbell as a safe, steady player who is still improving.”

“While New England’s top priority this offseason should be to surround quarterback Drake Maye with as much talent as possible, it’s hard to pass on Carter here. In his first year playing on the ball, the junior finished as easily the most valuable edge defender in college football, according to PFF’s wins above average metric. He’s a freak athlete whom many consider the best player in the draft, regardless of position. Carter would form an enticing edge pairing with Keion White.”

“For those familiar with Mike Vrabel, he loves himself some grinders, tough guys, and dominance in the trenches. He’ll want a tone-setter like Mason Graham to join the Patriots, wrecking opposing offenses on every down. The Patriots had one competent defensive tackle last year and need much more havoc created up front. Mason Graham is one of the most disruptive defensive forces to enter any NFL Draft in the last several years so he’ll fit right in at New England under new head coach Mike Vrabel.”

Pat Lane, Pats Pulpit: Mason Graham, DL, Michigan (mock trade down to No. 6)

“The Patriots have needs all over their roster, but defensive line might not seem like the biggest at first glance. However, I would argue that the biggest need is adding blue chip players any way possible. Graham has the potential to be one of those right away.

“The Michigan product can get to the quarterback from the inside, but is also stout enough to be a solid run defender as well. As we have seen in these playoffs, running the ball and being able to stop the run are important, as is being able to attack the passer from different angles — two things Graham is capable of doing.”

“Travis Hunter to the Patriots would be tremendous for everyone involved. New England gets a ridiculous two-way player, and Hunter can be featured prominently right away.”

“The Patriots love versatile players, and their coach, Mike Vrabel, was a notable key two-way player for Bill Belichick with his strong play at linebacker and his occasional red-zone touchdowns as a tight end. Troy Brown also played corner and wide receiver for them. Hunter can be a top shutdown corner and also contribute some flashy big plays for Drake Maye when needed with a few key snaps.”

The New England Patriots have long been known for their dominant defense, but in recent years, they have struggled to replicate the success they had in the past. One team that the Patriots can learn from is the Kansas City Chiefs, who have shown how a strong defense can be the key to winning games.

The Chiefs defense has been a force to be reckoned with this season, ranking in the top 10 in both points allowed and yards allowed per game. They have been able to shut down some of the most high-powered offenses in the league, and their success can be attributed to their aggressive style of play and their ability to create turnovers.

The Patriots, on the other hand, have struggled to generate turnovers and have been too passive at times on defense. They need to take a page out of the Chiefs’ playbook and be more aggressive in creating turnovers and putting pressure on opposing quarterbacks.

Additionally, the Patriots can learn from the Chiefs’ ability to adapt and make adjustments on the fly. The Chiefs have shown a willingness to change their game plan based on the strengths and weaknesses of their opponents, and this flexibility has been a key factor in their success.

Overall, the Patriots can learn a lot from the Chiefs defense and their approach to the game. By being more aggressive, generating turnovers, and being willing to adapt their game plan, the Patriots can improve their defense and get back to their winning ways.

  • Scott Laughton back with Flyers, Ryan Poehling skates with trainer – NBC Sports Philadelphia

VOORHEES, N.J. — The Flyers were happy to see Scott Laughton at Sunday’s practice after the alternate captain had to miss the last three games because of a personal family matter.

Laughton is a beloved guy in the team’s locker room. He’s also a valuable player with his positional versatility and secondary scoring.

“You miss a guy like that around the room, he’s always a vocal presence and keeping things light,” Owen Tippett said. “To have him back, I think it’s a good boost for our group and a nice little reset to have him around again.”

The Flyers are trying to stabilize Monday after losing their last two games by a combined score of 9-2. They welcome the Devils (7 p.m. ET/NBCSP), a team they beat eight days ago, when Laughton last played.

“Obviously he had to take a leave, just being here for him and happy to have him back,” Travis Sanheim said. “He’s a big part of this team, big part of this locker room, so we’re excited to have him back. I’m sure he’s looking forward to getting back with us, as well.”

The Flyers also saw Ryan Poehling return to the ice as he recovers from a head injury. The 26-year-old center skated before practice in a tracksuit under the watch of head athletic trainer Tommy Alva.

Poehling suffered the injury 10 days ago when he took an illegal check to the head against the Islanders. There has been no timetable for his return.

“I’ve been in Poehling’s situation before and it’s not fun,” Tippett said. “There are a lot of hidden variables that go into it that a lot of people don’t understand and it can be tough to stay in it and not get frustrated. Just him being around the room and getting back on the ice, it’s a big motivator for him and for us to see him back.”

While Tippett can relate to Poehling’s injury, he knows the recovery can be different for everyone.

“The most you can do is just check in,” he said. “He has been through it before, too. With something like that, you wake up in the morning not knowing how you’re going to feel. To see his progress and to get him back on the ice, that’s one of the biggest steps to getting back.”

Maxim Tsyplakov, who delivered the hit on Poehling, didn’t receive a penalty during the game but was given a three-game suspension the next day.

“Unfortunate with Poehls, the hit he had to take,” Sanheim said. “We knew in real time how bad the hit was. Obviously [the officials] didn’t feel it was. Later on, we find out that it was a three-game suspension. He means a lot to us.”

Laughton and Poehling are key pieces to the Flyers’ bottom six and penalty kill.

“Both big, important guys in this locker room,” Sanheim said. “Good character guys, good leaders. They bring it every night. … It would mean a lot to get both of them back.”

Scott Laughton back with Flyers, Ryan Poehling skates with trainer

The Philadelphia Flyers received some good news as forward Scott Laughton returned to practice with the team after missing the last few games with an upper-body injury. Laughton, who has been a key contributor for the Flyers this season, was seen participating in drills and looked to be in good spirits.

On the other hand, Montreal Canadiens forward Ryan Poehling was spotted skating with a team trainer during practice. Poehling, who has been dealing with a lower-body injury, has been sidelined for the past few games and his return to the lineup remains uncertain.

Both players are important pieces for their respective teams and their presence on the ice will be crucial as they head into the final stretch of the season. Flyers fans will be relieved to see Laughton back in action, while Canadiens fans will be hoping for a speedy recovery for Poehling. Stay tuned for updates on their status as the season progresses.

  • 49ers hire former Jets assistant Brant Boyer as special teams coordinator – NBC Sports Bay Area & California

After a season filled with weekly blunders on special teams, the 49ers have a new person in charge.

The 49ers on Monday hired former New York Jets assistant coach Brant Boyer as special teams coordinator.

Boyer replaces Brian Schneider, who served as 49ers’ special teams coordinator for the past three seasons. Schneider was fired the day after the 49ers finished the regular season with a 6-11 record.

“I do think it’s an avenue we can get better in,” Shanahan said following the season.

“Special teams is a part of football, and everything a part of football is extremely important to us.”

Boyer, 53, played 10 seasons in the NFL as a linebacker and core special teams player from 1994 to 2003 with Miami, Jacksonville and Cleveland.

He served as the Jets’ special teams coordinator since 2016 under Todd Bowles, Adam Gase, Robert Saleh and interim coach Jeff Ulbrich. Boyer also worked four seasons as an assistant special teams coach with the Indianapolis Colts.

Coach Kyle Shanahan now has filled the two major coaching vacancies on his staff.

The 49ers on Friday hired Saleh as defensive coordinator to replace Nick Sorensen, who was fired after one season on the job.

Saleh, who previously worked for the 49ers from 2016 to 2020, becomes the fourth defensive coordinator in four seasons for the 49ers. DeMeco Ryans ran the defense in 2021 and ’22, followed by Steve Wilks (2023) and Sorensen (2024).

Initially, Shanahan expressed interest in retaining Sorensen on his coaching staff. However, Sorensen will not be back with the 49ers in 2025, a source told NBC Sports Bay Area.

Also, defensive assistant Brandon Staley is not expected to be back with the 49ers in 2025. Staley, the former head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers, held the role of assistant head coach/defense last season.

The San Francisco 49ers have made a key addition to their coaching staff, hiring former New York Jets assistant Brant Boyer as their new special teams coordinator. Boyer brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the role, having spent the past six seasons with the Jets.

During his time in New York, Boyer helped develop one of the top special teams units in the league. Under his guidance, the Jets consistently ranked among the best in the NFL in various special teams categories, including kick and punt return average, field goal percentage, and punt coverage.

Boyer’s expertise and leadership will be invaluable to the 49ers as they look to improve their special teams play and make a run at the playoffs next season. Head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch are confident that Boyer’s addition will have a positive impact on the team and help them take their special teams to the next level.

Fans can expect to see a more disciplined and effective special teams unit under Boyer’s direction, as he brings a strong work ethic and attention to detail to his coaching style. With Boyer on board, the 49ers are poised to have one of the top special teams units in the league in the upcoming season.

Stay tuned for more updates on the 49ers’ coaching staff and their preparations for the 2021 season. With Boyer leading the way on special teams, the team is sure to be in good hands.

  • Boston, MA shaking from earthquake off NH, Maine Monday – NBC Boston

The Boston area shook from a rare, but minor, earthquake Monday morning.

The U.S. Geological Survey rated the shaking as a magnitude 3.8, downgraded from the initial magnitude of 4.1. It was centered off the coast of New Hampshire and Maine in York Harbor, about 12 miles underground.

While not destructive, and fairly common in areas with more seismic activity like California, that’s relatively large for the area.

Shaking was felt across the region — as far away as New Haven, Connecticut, and Albany, New York, according to responses sent to U.S. Geological Survey.

Last year, the Boston area felt shaking from a 4.8 magnitude earthquake centered in New Jersey.

Did you know South Carolina saw a devastating 7.3 earthquake in 1886?

  • How much are we getting Wednesday? – NBC Boston

A breezy and mild Monday is in store for southern New England, with winds gusting between 25 and 35 mph, and temperatures reaching the upper 30s to low 40s.

Dry conditions will persist, but a cold front arriving early Tuesday morning will bring another blast of cold by Thursday morning. Expect snow squalls between 4 and 9 a.m.

How much snow are we getting in Massachusetts?

Coverage of snow bursts will not be impressive but those that do see morning snow will see conditions deteriorate quickly, with reduced visibility and slick spots. Winds will also ramp up, with gusts potentially reaching 45 to 50 mph through the early afternoon.

Temperatures will peak early in the day before rapidly dropping into the teens and 20s by the afternoon, making it feel even colder with the strong winds.

Following the cold front, a weak clipper system will bring a chance for light snow on Wednesday, with accumulations generally expected to be minor, two inches or less, with a few higher accumulations in central Mass. High pressure then builds in, bringing dry but colder weather for the latter half of the week, with below-normal temperatures and gusty northwest winds making it feel quite chilly.

    Another winter storm this weekend?

Another system may approach by Sunday, potentially bringing a mix of rain and snow, though the exact details remain uncertain at this time.

Stay tuned for updates as we continue to monitor the forecast.

  • Where’s my refund? What to know as tax season starts – NBC Chicago

Tax season is slated to begin on Monday, and that means the time to file is almost here.

But for those excepting a refund – the wait won’t be over once the season officially begins.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, most refunds are issued in less than 21 days. However, there may be delays on some occasions.

“The IRS warns taxpayers not to rely on receiving a refund by a certain date, especially when making large purchases or paying bills,” the agency said. “Some returns may require additional review and may take longer.”

The IRS does make it easy for taxpayers to check the status of their refunds through a free tool called “Where’s My Refund?”

To check the status of your refund you will need the following personal information:

Once you have that information, you can start your verification request in the “Where’s My Refund” tool here.

You can start checking the status of your refund within:

    • 24 hours after electronically filing a 2024 tax return
    • 3 or 4 days after electronically filing a 2023 return
    • 4 weeks after mailing the return

As tax season kicks off, many people are eagerly awaiting their tax refunds. However, it’s important to know that the process may take longer than usual this year due to the ongoing pandemic and other factors.

If you’re wondering “Where’s my refund?” here are a few key things to keep in mind:

    1. Check your refund status online: The IRS has a tool called “Where’s My Refund?” that allows you to track the status of your refund. Simply enter your Social Security number, filing status, and refund amount to see where your money is.

    2. Be patient: With the IRS facing challenges like staff shortages and a backlog of returns from last year, it’s possible that processing times may be longer than usual. It’s important to be patient and avoid contacting the IRS unless necessary.

    3. File electronically and choose direct deposit: Filing your taxes electronically and opting for direct deposit can help speed up the refund process. Paper returns may take longer to process, so it’s best to go digital if possible.

    4. Avoid tax refund scams: Be cautious of any emails, phone calls, or messages claiming to be from the IRS about your refund. The IRS will never contact you by phone, email, or social media to request personal or financial information.

Overall, it’s important to stay informed and be prepared for potential delays in receiving your tax refund this year. By following these tips and staying patient, you can hopefully get your refund in a timely manner.

  • DA to not pursue charges against mother of Alexis Gabe’s accused killer – NBC Bay Area

The Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office announced Thursday it would not seek charges against the mother of the man accused of killing Alexis Gabe in 2022.

Gabe went missing in January 2022, leading to a community-wide missing person search.

Months later, it became a homicide case connected to her ex-boyfriend Marshall Curtis Jones, who was shot and killed by law enforcement attempting to arrest him in Washington state. The DA’s office then investigated whether Alicia Coleman-Clark, Jones’ mother, acted as an accessory in connection with Gabe’s murder.

“It was very disappointing, definitely. Our attorney worked very hard on her presentation, and we had a substantial amount of evidence that she presented,” said Gwyn Gabe, Alexis Gabe’s father.

The family said they were devastated because the three-year statute of limitations for the case is up in a few days, meaning there’s no chance for any criminal case in the future.

Gwyn said he is in disbelief that the DA’s office will not pursue criminal charges, adding that he believes Coleman-Clark helped protect her son after the alleged killing.

“To me, the evidence is there. And this evidence comes from a combination of Ring Door camera video, ADT videos, statements,” said Dara Cashman, the Gabe family attorney.

The DA’s office said it went through extensive examinations of evidence brought by Oakley and Antioch police and the Gabe family but said there was “insufficient evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt.”

“I just don’t know why they just don’t see it that way,” Gwyn said.

On Sunday, the Gabes and members of the Oakley community will remember Alexis in an annual “kindness day”.

Gwyn said it was a way to change the day of his daughter’s death to a “day of compassion.”

“We would appreciate it if everyone watching [would] take part in a kindness day. Instead of dwelling on the sadness of our daughter’s passing, we decided to make it a day of compassion,” he said.

The family said they ask the community to perform acts of kindness and think of Alexis as a way to pay their respects.

In a recent development, the District Attorney has announced that they will not be pursuing charges against the mother of Alexis Gabe’s accused killer. This decision comes as a shock to many, as there was speculation that she may have been involved in the crime.

The DA’s office cited lack of evidence and insufficient grounds for pressing charges against the mother. This decision has sparked controversy and debate among the community, with some arguing that justice is not being served in this case.

Alexis Gabe’s family has expressed their disappointment and frustration with the DA’s decision, stating that they believe the mother should be held accountable for her alleged role in the crime. Despite this setback, they are determined to continue seeking justice for their loved one.

The community is now left wondering what this decision means for the case moving forward, and whether it will have any impact on the outcome of the trial. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Austin Rivers humorously recalls skipping Steph Curry family vacation – NBC Sports Bay Area & California

Former NBA veteran Austin Rivers hilariously opened up on a recent segment of Overtime’s “Meg on the Mic” with Megan Eugenio about a vacation Warriors superstar Steph Curry paid for that brought the Curry and Rivers families to Fiji. For reference, Steph’s brother, Seth of the Charlotte Hornets, is married to Austin’s sister, Callie.

The thing is, Rivers didn’t attend the trip.

“We had a huge family trip in Fiji; it was all the Currys and all the Rivers. I didn’t go. We [the Denver Nuggets] had just lost to the Warriors (in the 2022 playoffs),” Rivers hilariously told Eugenio. “I’m like, ‘Steph, you’re not about to fly me out on vacation after just knocking me out of the playoffs, bro.’ ”

Curry and Golden State, of course, beat Rivers and Denver in five games during the first round of the 2022 Western Conference playoffs en route to the Warriors’ NBA Finals victory over the Boston Celtics.

In that series, Curry averaged 28 points and made 40.4 percent of 3-point shots, even scoring a combined 60 points off the bench over the first two games. Rivers averaged 4.2 points over 21.7 minutes per game.

Rivers just couldn’t, “as a man,” let Curry beat him in the playoffs, win a ring and then fly out his entire family to Fiji.

“Trust me, my family [and] friends were like, ‘Why don’t you just go? The whole family’s going.’ I was like, ‘I can’t, as a man, have this man pay for the whole thing — flights, island rented out.’ This dude just had like 40 [points] on my head top,” Rivers told Eugenio. “There’s no way I was getting on a flight and just being like, ‘Hey, Steph.’ Hell no. I [direct messaged] him, ‘I’ll have to catch you on the next one.’ He’s like, ‘All right, man.’

“If the roles were reversed, it would have been the same thing. I promise you, if we would have beat them and I was playing the way he was playing, and I did a family tip for all of us, Steph would’ve been like, ‘I got some business things, you know.’ No way he would’ve came.”

There was no way Rivers was flying to Fiji — especially considering Curry has a 22-5 record in games against him.
