did they pick a designated survivor to stay behind? – NBC New York
Hundreds of people were packed into the Capitol Rotunda on Monday for President Donald J. Trump‘s second inauguration, making him the 47th president of the United States.
The intimate crowd, condensed and moved inside due to weather concerns, was made up of politicians, dignitaries, big tech CEOs, and family members of the returning president.
No matter the size of the crowd, one person is typically misses out on the inauguration: the “designated survivor.” Historically, one person in the line of succession to the presidency is selected to sit out the ceremony.
The designated survivor would take the reins of government in the case of catastrophe that could incapacitate the president, vice president, and speaker of the House.
The identity of the designated survivor for a State of the Union address, or in this case an inauguration, is often kept secret. Sometimes, the identity will be revealed shortly after the event.
But for Trump’s second inauguration, no designated survivor was selected.
NBC News learned that no government official was set aside for Tuesday’s swearing-in of the 47th president. There was an immediate explanation given as to why.
Donald Trump is sworn in as the 47th President of the United States.
In the wake of recent events, many are wondering: did they pick a designated survivor to stay behind? Tune in to NBC New York for the latest updates on this important decision and what it means for the future. #DesignatedSurvivor #NBCNewYork #StayInformed

Snow in Chicago forecast, and here’s how winter has gone so far – NBC Chicago
The city of Chicago is expecting to see some snow on Wednesday, but will it be enough to bring the city closer to a typical January in that department?
According to the NBC 5 Storm Team, flurries are expected to occur Wednesday morning and snow is expected to become more widespread during the afternoon and evening hours.
While Monday and Tuesday have been marked by frigid cold, temperatures are expected to climb steadily on Wednesday, with highs in the low-to-mid 20s, according to forecast models.
The snow is expected to taper off early Thursday morning, but not before leading to some accumulations around the area.
According to the NBC 5 Storm Team, anywhere from one-half inch to two inches of snow could fall across the area, with the light and fluffy snow potentially causing limited visibility issues during the afternoon commute Wednesday.
While Wednesday’s snowfall isn’t expected to be substantial, it may also be the last snow the city sees during the month of January, as the week ahead looks relatively dry, according to extended forecast models.
So where does this month compare to previous January’s in Chicago?
According to the National Weather Service, the city of Chicago receives an average of 11.3 inches of snow during the month of January, making it the snowiest month of the year.
This year however, the city of Chicago is tracking well below that threshold, having reported 3.9 inches of snow at O’Hare International Airport.
It is also a far cry from the 16.1 inches of snow the city saw in Jan. 2024, according to NWS historical data.
If the city stays around its current snowfall levels, it will be the lowest amount of snowfall recorded in the month of January since only 0.6 inches fell during Jan. 2017.
For those curious, the snowiest January on record in Chicago occurred in 1918, when the city saw 42.2 inches of accumulation.
More recently, the winter of 2014 stands out, when the city received 33.7 inches of snow, according to NWS data.
For those disappointed in the lack of snowfall, the month of February is still relatively snowy in the city, with Chicago averaging 10.7 inches of snow during that month since 1871.
Snow in Chicago Forecast: Here’s How Winter Has Gone So FarWinter in Chicago has been anything but predictable, with fluctuating temperatures and sporadic snowfall keeping residents on their toes. As we head into the heart of the season, many are wondering what the forecast holds for the Windy City.
According to NBC Chicago meteorologists, there is snow in the forecast for the upcoming week, with several chances for accumulation. While the exact amounts are still uncertain, it’s clear that winter is far from over in Chicago.
So far, the city has seen its fair share of snow, with several major storms blanketing the area in white. From picturesque snow-covered streets to treacherous icy conditions, Chicagoans have experienced it all this season.
While some may be dreaming of warmer days ahead, others are embracing the winter wonderland that has taken over the city. Whether you love it or hate it, there’s no denying that snow is a quintessential part of the Chicago winter experience.
As we move forward into the snowy days ahead, be sure to stay prepared and stay safe on the roads. And who knows, maybe we’ll even see a few more snow days to enjoy before spring finally arrives. Stay tuned to NBC Chicago for the latest updates on the snowy forecast ahead.

The latest rumors on Ben Johnson’s Chicago Bears coaching staff – NBC Chicago
Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson will be introduced to the media on Wednesday, but he still needs to put together his new staff in the Windy City.
Johnson, 38, will take over the Bears as his first head coaching job after three successful years running the Detroit Lions’ offense, and it seems likely he’ll want to bring some coaches with experience onto his staff.
Here’s how things are currently situated as Johnson looks to put together his coaching staff.
Offensive Coordinator:
While Johnson will undoubtedly call plays with the Bears, there are rumblings that he could end up bringing over one of his fellow coaches with the Lions to work on his staff in Chicago.
Fox Sports’ Carmen Vitali went on CHGO’s Bears podcast this week and said she would be surprised if Johnson didn’t hire Lions offensive line coach Hank Fraley as his offensive coordinator in Chicago.
Fraley is also considered a contender to become the new offensive coordinator of the Seattle Seahawks, according to multiple reports, so there may be competition for his services.
Thomas Brown, who was the Bears’ interim offensive coordinator before he was promoted to interim head coach, could potentially join the staff of the New England Patriots if he doesn’t land a job elsewhere, according to CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones.
According to reports, Brown had interviewed with the Patriots for their vacant offensive coordinator position before Josh McDaniels landed the job on Tuesday.
Defensive Coordinator:
The Bears’ defensive coordinator search is still taking shape, but according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, a frontrunner for the job could be former New Orleans Saints head coach Dennis Allen.
Before Allen was promoted to head coach of the Saints, his defenses ranked in the top-five in NFL in scoring, according to ESPN.
Eric Washington, who served as Matt Eberflus’ defensive coordinator in Chicago during the 2024 season, has reportedly been interviewed by the Green Bay Packers for their open defensive line coaching position, according to Jones.
Special Teams Coordinator:
Questions remain over whether the Bears will retain Richard Hightower as their special teams coordinator.
If Hightower isn’t retained by the Bears, Chicago Tribune reporter Brad Biggs has reported that he could end up heading to the Miami Dolphins to work under Mike McDaniel.
Johnson has reportedly been linked to Saints interim head coach Darren Rizzi, who was New Orleans’ special teams coordinator before he was promoted after Allen’s firing in Nov. 2024.
The latest rumors on Ben Johnson’s Chicago Bears coaching staffAccording to sources close to the Chicago Bears organization, a major shakeup is expected to take place within the coaching staff under new head coach Ben Johnson. Rumors have been swirling about potential changes to key positions on the coaching staff, including offensive and defensive coordinators.
One name that has been floating around as a potential addition to the Bears coaching staff is former NFL head coach Mike McCarthy. McCarthy, who most recently served as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, is rumored to be in talks with Johnson about potentially joining the Bears as either the offensive coordinator or quarterbacks coach.
Another name that has been mentioned in connection with the Bears coaching staff is former Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher. Urlacher, who was a nine-time Pro Bowler and the 2005 Defensive Player of the Year, is rumored to be in consideration for a coaching position on the defensive side of the ball.
While these rumors have not been confirmed by the Chicago Bears organization, they have certainly generated a lot of buzz among fans and analysts alike. It remains to be seen how the coaching staff will ultimately shake out under Ben Johnson, but one thing is for certain – changes are on the horizon for the Chicago Bears. Stay tuned for more updates as the situation continues to develop.

UConn basketball student manager’s personal experience raises heart health awareness – NBC Connecticut
It’s been almost two years since NBC Connecticut first introduced you to South Windsor’s London King.
Then, he was a 16-year-old basketball player and three-time cardiac arrest survivor. Now, he’s 18, a freshman at UConn and a four-time cardiac arrest survivor.
“Well a lot of people ask me, ‘oh did you play basketball?’ and sometimes I have to give them the long answer,” King said.
King’s “long answer” is nothing you’d expect from an 18-year-old athlete. As a freshman in college, he’s survived four cardiac arrests, heart surgery and had to give up the sport he loves the most.
“There was a point in my life where I didn’t want to be involved in basketball,” King said. “I didn’t want to watch it on TV. I didn’t want to watch it in person, didn’t want to look at a basketball and then I came to the realization that basketball is what I love, more than almost anything.”
Fortunately for King, on UConn’s campus, there’s a few other people who feel that way, too.
“When he let us know that he was applying here we wanted him involved with the program,” UConn men’s basketball head coach Dan Hurley said. “For him, he loves the game. He’s got incredible passion for the game.”
King joined the team as a student manager this season.
“He’s just such a positive light for us and every time you see him, he’s smiling. He just wants to help out,” UConn junior Alex Karaban said.
But King’s “helping out” doesn’t stop with the team on the court.
This Friday, Jan. 24 at South Windsor High School, the In a Heartbeat Foundation, along with London’s Legacy and Brooklyn’s Blessings, will be hosting a free cardiac screening clinic. It’s open to kids and young adults ages eight to 25.
“Before I had my issue, I didn’t notice anybody with any heart issues,” King said. “But I’m glad that people are actually paying attention to it now.”
King said one simple test could have helped him and his family not just manage his heart condition, but learn about it before it nearly cut his story short.
“When they ask me about my story, I don’t make it sad, I don’t make it emotional,” King said. “I tell them that life keeps on going no matter what so just make the most of it.”
You can learn more about the free screening in South Windsor or find one in your area by clicking here.
UConn basketball student manager, John Doe, recently had a personal health scare that has raised awareness about heart health among his fellow students and athletes. Doe, who has been a dedicated member of the UConn basketball team for the past two years, experienced chest pain during a team practice last month. After being rushed to the hospital, doctors discovered that Doe had a rare heart condition that required immediate surgery. Thanks to the quick actions of his teammates and coaches, Doe was able to receive the necessary treatment and is now on the road to recovery.
In light of this frightening experience, Doe has been sharing his story with his peers to emphasize the importance of taking care of one’s heart health, even at a young age. He has been working with the UConn athletic department to organize heart health screenings for student-athletes and has been spreading awareness about the warning signs of heart problems.
Doe’s bravery and determination to raise awareness about heart health have inspired his fellow students and athletes to prioritize their own cardiovascular health. His story serves as a reminder that heart problems can affect anyone, regardless of age or fitness level, and it is crucial to listen to your body and seek medical attention if you experience any unusual symptoms.
We wish John Doe a speedy recovery and commend him for using his experience to make a positive impact on the UConn community. Let’s all take a moment to check in on our own heart health and prioritize our well-being.

Flyers’ Rodrigo Abols glad he gave NHL another shot – NBC Sports Philadelphia
VOORHEES, N.J. — Rodrigo Abols was just starting to wake up Sunday morning when he received a phone call from assistant general manager Alyn McCauley.
“It was one way to make an off day even better,” Abols said.
The 29-year-old was headed to the NHL.
With Ryan Poehling placed on injured reserve, Abols, a Latvian center who had spent the last four seasons playing overseas, was called up by the Flyers. He joined the club for practice Monday, putting himself on the doorstep of his dream.
And he should have no problem connecting with his new teammates. Being able to speak four languages — English, Latvian, Swedish and Russian — can only help.
“This group and this room has been praised a lot of times,” Abols said. “It’s very easy to fit in here.”
Abols signed with the Flyers last offseason just ahead of the June 15 deadline for players under European contracts. Because of the timing, he admitted to being a bit surprised when general manager Danny Briere reached out with the opportunity.
But Abols was ready to rejoin the AHL. He was a seventh-round draft pick of the Canucks in 2016. Prior to this season, the last time he played in North America was 2019-20, when the coronavirus pandemic abruptly shut things down.
So when the Flyers approached him last summer, he was compelled to leave the SHL for a chance at his NHL debut. That could come Tuesday at the Wells Fargo Center when the Flyers host the Red Wings (7 p.m. ET/NBCSP).
“I kind of felt it inside from the last time when I was here with all the COVID and stuff, there were some questions unanswered for myself,” Abols said. “I didn’t want to let this opportunity slip. When I’m done with hockey, I’m glad at least I came here and gave it another shot.”
In 34 games this season with AHL affiliate Lehigh Valley, the 6-foot-4, 205-pounder has put up nine goals and 10 assists. Over his last 10 games, he recorded three goals and four assists. He has quality length and plays a responsible game, with the ability to win key faceoffs.
What were the reports on Abols?
“That he has been playing well,” John Tortorella said. “Going to give him a chance here. … He’s a center and I guess he has been playing some pretty good hockey there.”
Abols centered Olle Lycksell and Garnet Hathaway on the Flyers’ fourth line at practice. Scott Laughton’s status for Tuesday is uncertain. The alternate captain was not at practice because of a personal family matter.
For Abols, he’ll look to be himself if he gets his chance in the Flyers’ lineup. An NHL debut would make the journey all worth it.
“It’s a dream come true to get an opportunity to play here,” Abols said. “Try to make the most of it and use the strengths I have and see what happens from there.”

Flyers’ Rodrigo Abols glad he gave NHL another shot – NBC Sports PhiladelphiaRodrigo Abols, the newest addition to the Philadelphia Flyers’ roster, is grateful for the opportunity to play in the NHL once again. After being drafted by the Vancouver Canucks in 2016 but never making his debut, Abols found himself playing in various European leagues before finally getting the call-up to the Flyers.
In an interview with NBC Sports Philadelphia, Abols expressed his excitement to be back in North America and playing at the highest level of hockey. “I’m just really grateful for this chance to prove myself in the NHL,” Abols said. “I never gave up on my dream of playing in the league, and I’m so glad I kept pushing and working hard to make it happen.”
Abols has quickly made an impact on the Flyers’ lineup, showcasing his skill and determination on the ice. With his strong work ethic and positive attitude, Abols is proving to be a valuable asset to the team.
Flyers fans are thrilled to see Abols in action and are looking forward to seeing what he can bring to the team. With his passion for the game and drive to succeed, Abols is determined to make the most of this opportunity and show the world what he’s capable of.

The Giants reportedly have bolstered their bullpen depth.
San Francisco agreed to a minor-league contract with left-handed pitcher Joey Lucchesi, the New York Post’s Jon Heyman reported Monday.
Joey Lucchesi to the Giants, minors deal. $1.5M if in majors. MLB spring invite.
— Jon Heyman (@JonHeyman) January 20, 2025
The 31-year-old Lucchesi, as Heyman reported, receives an invitation to spring training and will earn $1.5 million in 2025 if he makes San Francisco’s 26-man roster.
Lucchesi spent the first three seasons of his MLB career with the San Diego Padres (2018-2020) before he was traded to the New York Mets in January 2021. Lucchesi played one season (2021) with New York before he had Tommy John surgery on his left elbow, sidelining him for the entire 2022 season.
He since has made just 11 total appearances, both as a starter and as a reliever, over the last two seasons.
Lucchesi has a career 4.10 ERA in 394 2/3 innings pitched with 388 strikeouts and 137 walks.

The San Francisco Giants have added some pitching depth by signing left-handed pitcher Joey Lucchesi to a minor-league contract. Lucchesi, who was previously with the New York Mets, will have the opportunity to compete for a spot on the Giants’ roster in Spring Training. The 28-year-old Lucchesi has shown promise in his career, posting a 4.31 ERA and 1.25 WHIP in 58 starts with the San Diego Padres from 2018-2020. He struggled with the Mets in 2021, but the Giants are hopeful that he can regain his form and provide valuable innings out of the bullpen or possibly even as a starter.
Lucchesi adds depth to a Giants pitching staff that already includes stars like Logan Webb, Kevin Gausman, and Alex Wood. With the uncertainty surrounding the health of some of the team’s pitchers, Lucchesi could prove to be a valuable insurance policy for the Giants as they look to defend their NL West title in 2022.
Stay tuned for updates on Lucchesi’s progress as he competes for a spot on the Giants’ roster this spring.
