Thousands lose power in San Diego’s backcountry as Santa Anas begin to blow – NBC 7 San Diego
Officials at San Diego Gas & Electric have cut the power to thousands of customers in remote East County as high winds began to blow on Monday night, with a red-flag warning not expiring until 10 p.m. on Tuesday.
As of 10:45 p.m. Monday, the utility said, 13,676 members of the backcountry communities had been affected by the public-safety power shutoffs, which are implemented to keep power lines from arcing or throwing off sparks when trees come into contact with the high-power lines.
While that number seems large, it is dwarfed by those who could be in the dark: SDG&E said that an additional 69,949 customers could lose power during this weather event, which is expected to run its course by Tuesday evening.
So far, the shutoffs have occurred in the following communities:
- Alpine
- Boulevard
- Campo
- Campo Reservation
- Descanso
- Jacumba
- Julian
- La Jolla Reservation
- La Posta Reservation
- Los Coyotes Reservation
- Manzanita Reservation
- Mesa Grande Reservation
- Pala
- Palomar Mountain
- Pauma and Yuima Reservation
- Pauma Valley
- Pine Valley
- Potrero
- Ramona
- Ranchita
- San Pasqual Reservation
- Santa Ysabel
- Santa Ysabel Reservation
- Valley Center
- Warner Springs
- Viejas Reservation

Officials with the National Weather Service said Monday evening that a high-wind warning would be in effect from 4 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday.
NBC 7’s Greg Bledsoe was forecasting that the winds would pick up Monday evening, then peak overnight into Tuesday morning, with isolated gusts possibly reaching 80 mph.
“This could also be the driest conditions we’ve seen during this string of Santa Ana events,” Bledsoe said. “Relative humidity is expected to drop down below 5% in some places Tuesday afternoon. So, fire danger will be in the ‘extreme’ category for most inland and mountain locations.”
The winds will start to taper off Tuesday night but will be replaced by a fire-weather watch, mainly because of how dry it will be. After a brief break from the winds on Wednesday, Santa Anas will return Thursday, but shouldn’t be as strong as this latest round.
By later this week, chances for rain begin to show up in the weekend forecast. If those bear fruit, it would be the region’s first rain in more than a month.
The high winds and outages are also affecting schools: Five districts announced Monday night that classes had been canceled on Tuesday.
Thousands of residents in San Diego’s backcountry are facing power outages as strong Santa Ana winds begin to sweep through the region. According to NBC 7 San Diego, the gusty winds have knocked out power to numerous communities, leaving residents in the dark. The Santa Ana winds, known for their dry and hot conditions, are expected to continue throughout the day, increasing the risk of wildfires in the area. San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) has been working to restore power to affected areas, but the high winds are making it difficult for crews to safely access and repair damaged power lines.
Residents are urged to stay vigilant and take precautions to ensure their safety during this time. It is recommended to have emergency supplies on hand, such as flashlights, batteries, and non-perishable food items, in case of prolonged power outages.
Stay tuned to NBC 7 San Diego for the latest updates on the power outages and Santa Ana winds in the region. Stay safe, San Diego!

Robert Saleh has second Jaguars head-coaching interview – NBC Sports Bay Area & California
A reunion between the 49ers and their former defensive coordinator Robert Saleh is appearing less and less likely.
The ex-New York Jets coach has a second interview for the Jacksonville Jaguars’ head-coaching job scheduled for Friday, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported Monday, citing sources.

Saleh acquitted himself well in first interview and gets a longer look. pic.twitter.com/PlbsdjAfah
— Jeremy Fowler (@JFowlerESPN) January 20, 2025
After relieving first-year coordinator Nick Sorensen of his duties, the 49ers interviewed Saleh for their DC vacancy on Jan. 9. The 45-year-old served in the role for the first four seasons of Kyle Shanahan’s head-coaching tenure from 2017 to 2020 before leaving to coach the Jets, and New York fired Saleh early in the 2024 NFL season after a 2-3 start.
While it’s widely believed Saleh would be San Francisco’s first choice, the 49ers also interviewed Deshea Townsend, the Detroit Lions’ defensive passing game coordinator and defensive backs coach, for their DC opening. In addition to the Jaguars, Saleh also has interviewed with the Las Vegas Raiders and Dallas Cowboys for their head-coaching vacancies.
Despite a volatile Jets tenure, Saleh built New York’s defense into one of the NFL’s best during his time there — and the 49ers Faithful are very familiar with his success as DC in the Bay. The 49ers returned to the NFL playoffs for the first time since their 2013 campaign during the 2019 season, led by a lights-out defense with Saleh at the helm.
But whether or not Saleh returns to duplicate that success with the 49ers remains to be seen — and certainly depends on how well his second Jaguars interview goes.

Robert Saleh, the defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers, has reportedly had a second interview for the head-coaching position with the Jacksonville Jaguars. According to NBC Sports Bay Area & California, Saleh is one of the top candidates for the job and has impressed the Jaguars organization with his leadership and strategic thinking.Saleh, who has been with the 49ers since 2017, is known for his fiery coaching style and ability to motivate players. Under his guidance, the 49ers defense has consistently ranked among the top in the league.
If Saleh is ultimately hired by the Jaguars, it would be a significant loss for the 49ers, but a great opportunity for Saleh to take on a new challenge and lead a team of his own. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

Who is in the Inauguration Day parade? Full schedule and lineup – NBC Chicago
Inauguration Day will be filled with ceremonies and events, among them, the traditional Presidential Parade.
The parade is set to feature nearly 7,500 participants from 23 states, according to the Trump Vance Inaugural Committee.
“Inaugural parades are a long-lived tradition — dating back to President Washington’s first election, when impromptu crowds of supporters followed and cheered behind him as he traveled from Mount Vernon to New York City,” the committee said in a release. “Presidents Adams and Jefferson also had spontaneous parades, which continued until the inauguration of President James Madison in 1809, when they became an official part of the event.”
Playing a prominent role in this year’s events will be Butler County first responders, who will honor the life of former fire chief Corey Comperatore, who was shot and killed during the attempted assassination of President-elect Donald Trump in July.

We hope all Americans will pause today to remember the bravery and sacrifice of their own first responders and police, the expertise of their 911 dispatchers, and the skill of their local hospital emergency and medical staff and emergency management agencies.”

Cal Fire crews responded to two small fires Monday amid gusty Santa Ana winds and low humidity that was creating dangerous fire weather.
One fire was located near a U.S. Navy facility in the Cleveland National Forest and the other involving a recreational vehicle sparked in the community of Bonsall.
The Bonsall fire started as an RV fire shortly after 9 a.m. It was knocked down at 9:23 a.m., according to Cal Fire.
No injuries or structural damage were reported, and the cause was under investigation, fire officials said.
At 10:25 a.m., firefighters responded to a small vegetation fire near the Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape training facility off state Highway 79 in the community of Warner Springs, Cal Fire said.
The fire scorched a half-acre and was contained by 10:50 a.m, and there were no injuries or structural damage, according to fire officials.
Cleanup efforts were ongoing.
Cal Fire swiftly responds to San Diego fires, containing blaze despite red flag warningIn a race against time, Cal Fire crews in San Diego successfully halted several wildfires that broke out amid dangerous red flag conditions. Despite the challenging weather, firefighters were able to quickly contain the blazes and prevent further destruction.

SAN FRANCISCO – Add four more exceedingly dismaying sights to this torturous Warriors season.
The first occurred three minutes after tipoff Saturday night, when Draymond Green’s increasingly visible limp became too much for him to bear, and he headed into the locker room with calf tightness that ended his night.
The second sight came in the third quarter when Stephen Curry’s right thumb, which has been tender for three weeks, took a bump that left him trying to shake off the pain. He remained in the game, but any issue with Curry’s shooting hand is too concerning to dismiss.
The third came in the final minutes, when Curry landed hard after a collision under the basket, came up hobbling on his left ankle and immediately left the game.
Steph Curry exited late in tonight’s game after a scary collision with Jordan Poole
— Warriors on NBC Sports Bay Area (@nbcswarriors.bsky.social) January 18, 2025 at 7:54 PM
The fourth, and least significant in the middle of the season, is that the Warriors needed a herculean effort from Andrew Wiggins to post a 122-114 victory over the Washington Wizards – the worst team in the NBA – that provided only tepid relief for the sellout crowd (18,064) at Chase Center.
“Draymond’s going to get an MRI tomorrow, and Steph just told me he doesn’t think it’s serious,” coach Steve Kerr said. “But they’ll both be day-to-day for now.”
Pending test results, this game is, on its face, the definition of a pyrrhic victory. Even if the medical updates are positive, any optimism will be muted. Curry has been pretty good at self-diagnosing ankle issues, but Green’s limp was so pronounced it clearly was painful and appeared to be serious.
Draymond Green won’t return to tonight’s game due to left calf tightness
— Warriors on NBC Sports Bay Area (@nbcswarriors.bsky.social) January 18, 2025 at 6:08 PM
For the fortunes of the Warriors lie largely in the effectiveness and availability of Curry and Green, decorated veterans and co-leaders of the team. This was the first game of a stretch in which eight of nine will be at Chase. The schedule over the next two-plus weeks represents an opportunity to climb up the Western Conference standings.
Yet here the Warriors are, with their offensive engine nursing ankle and thumb aches and their defensive ace, who was returning from a three-game absence, not making it past the first timeout and almost certain to miss at least few more games.
When Green left the floor, he was replaced by Gui Santos, who played only eight minutes without scoring. Moses Moody filled in admirably at power forward, scoring 13 points in 29 minutes and finishing plus-12 – enough to warrant more time.
“If he’s at the 4, there’s generally other shooters around him,” Kerr said of Moody, now in his fourth season. “There’s room for him. He’s always his best for us in this role, where he’s basically standing on the perimeter, ready to shoot, using his strength and length and making hustle plays like he did tonight.
“If Draymond’s out for a little bit, it’s a good chance for Moses to get a lot of minutes at that 4 spot.”
On a night when so much went wrong, Wiggins did everything necessary to ensure there was a successful ending, scoring a team-high 31 points, adding 11 rebounds, four assists and two blocks over 35 minutes.
“Andrew was great,” Kerr said. “He’s been playing at a really high level all season. The way things have evolved the past couple weeks, we’ve just really leaned into his scoring. We’re trying to get him on the floor for all the non-Steph minutes and running a lot of offense through him.
“He’s doing a lot of good things for us, scoring in multiple ways. And tonight, with the way he rebounded, he just played a total game. He was fantastic.”
Wiggins and Curry each scored nine points in the fourth quarter as the Warriors held off the Wizards, who cut the deficit to five with 1:39 left before fading down the stretch.
The Warriors managed to avoid the sting of another defeat to a struggling team, but it came at a cost. They can only hope it’s not high enough prevent a chance to build momentum.

In a disappointing turn of events, Steph Curry and Draymond Green both suffered injuries during the Golden State Warriors’ win over the Washington Wizards. The duo, who are crucial to the team’s success, were forced to exit the game early, leaving fans and teammates concerned about their health.Curry, who has been on a scoring tear this season, injured his ankle in the third quarter and did not return to the game. Green, known for his defensive prowess and leadership on the court, also suffered an injury to his knee and had to be sidelined for the remainder of the game.
The Warriors managed to secure the victory despite the setbacks, but the focus now turns to the health of Curry and Green. With both players being key components of the team’s success, their absences could have a significant impact on the Warriors’ performance in the coming games.
Stay tuned for updates on the status of Curry and Green as the team navigates through this challenging stretch of the season.
