  • Thousands to make their voices heard at People’s March days before inauguration – NBC4 Washington

As D.C. prepares for Inauguration Day, tens of thousands of activists are getting ready to demonstrate Saturday in The People’s March.

Days before President-elect Donald Trump is sworn in at the U.S. Capitol again, several grassroots groups will descend on the District for a march and rally with the same organizers behind the 2017 Women’s March.

“Talking about immigration, talking about peace, talking about abortion access, talking about racial justice and reproductive justice,” said Tamika Middleton, the managing director for Women’s March.

Like previous marches, organizers say Saturday’s event is part of a long-term resistance strategy to proposed policies of the incoming Trump Administration

“And so we are trying to create opportunities for people to be together, and that’s really our message, is for people to find ways for them to engage with each other,” Middleton said.

Saturday will be a busy day on downtown D.C.’s roads. Several Metro stations and several streets will be closed Sunday and Monday for the inauguration.

People’s March organizers say there will be three meet-up locations before they march to the Lincoln Memorial: Farragut Square, where groups will focus on democracy, immigration, climate and military; Franklin Park, a starting point for gender justice activists, women’s rights and LGBTQ+ groups; and McPherson Square, ground zero for many local grassroots organizations.

“We’re going to be specifically focusing on D.C. issues,” said Megan Salmon with Spaces in Action.

Salmon said they’ve been busy coordinating with local volunteers ahead of Saturday, and even though a lot has changed since Trump took office in 2017, their commitment to the cause hasn’t — and they’re ready for what’s next.

“Organizers have been preparing for a moment like this for way longer than it was talked about, so it wasn’t just since the election, it wasn’t just since the campaign trail,” Salmon said. “I do think that the resistance is strategic, but I do think that’s not just a reflection of the moment we’re in. I think it’s a longer-term fight.”

All of those groups are set to converge at the Lincoln Memorial, and that big rally is scheduled to go from about 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Correction (Wednesday, Jan. 15 at 6:20 a.m.): This article has been updated to correct the spelling of Tamika Middleton’s name.

Thousands of activists, protesters, and concerned citizens are expected to gather in Washington D.C. for the People’s March just days before the presidential inauguration. The march, organized by grassroots organizations and advocacy groups, aims to bring attention to a wide range of social justice issues and concerns.

Participants will come together to make their voices heard on issues such as racial justice, healthcare, climate change, and immigration reform. With the incoming administration set to take office, many feel a sense of urgency to demonstrate their commitment to fighting for a more equitable and just society.

The People’s March is expected to draw a diverse crowd of individuals from all walks of life, united in their dedication to creating positive change. Organizers are encouraging peaceful and respectful participation, emphasizing the power of collective action in shaping the future of our country.

  • Ovechkin on track to break Gretzky’s NHL career goals record – NBC4 Washington

Ovechkin on track to break Gretzky’s NHL career goals record – NBC4 Washington

Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals is closing in on the NHL career goals record of 894 held by Wayne Gretzky.

Ovechkin has 871 goals and needs 24 to set a new record.

Ovechkin entered the season 42 short of breaking a record by “The Great One” that long seemed unapproachable. The 39-year-old Russian is in his 20th NHL season and was on pace to get to 895 in February before breaking his left leg in a shin-on-shin collision in November. He missed 16 games but resumed his pursuit at Toronto in the Capitals’ first game out of the Christmas break.

    Alex Ovechkin’s last goal scored

Ovechkin scored a power-play goal in the second period Thursday night against Minnesota, his 28th in 47 games against Marc-Andre Fleury. That’s the most of any of the goaltenders Ovechkin has scored on.

What records does Ovechkin already have?

Ovechkin already owns the NHL records for power-play goals and shots on goal.

He also has 132 game-winning goals, four away from breaking Jaromir Jagr’s mark (135). Ovechkin has scored on 178 different goaltenders and counting, tying Jagr. Ovechkin has 177 multi-goal games, second to Gretzky (189).

Ovechkin earlier this season became the 60th player to record 700 career assists. He joined Gretzky, Gordie Howe, Jagr, Marcel Dionne and Phil Esposito as the only players with 700 goals and 700 assists.

Who are the NHL’s leading scorers?

Ovechkin, after climbing past Mike Gartner (708), Esposito (717), Dionne (731), Brett Hull (741) and Jagr (766), scored goal No. 802 on Dec. 23, 2022, to move into second all time behind Gretzky (894).

Who previously held the career goals record?

Gretzky has held the record since scoring his 802nd goal on March 23, 1994, to pass Howe. He added 92 more before retiring in 1999 after a total of 1,487 games over 20 seasons.

Gretzky holds 55 NHL records and even if his goals mark falls to Ovechkin — which he has said he is excited about — two seem truly untouchable: 2,857 total points and 1,963 assists, which is more than anyone else has in goals and assists combined.

In a historic pursuit of greatness, Alexander Ovechkin is on track to break Wayne Gretzky’s NHL career goals record. With each goal he scores, Ovechkin inches closer to etching his name in the record books as the greatest goal scorer of all time.

Ovechkin, who currently plays for the Washington Capitals, has already solidified himself as one of the greatest players in NHL history. His lethal shot, physicality, and unwavering determination have made him a force to be reckoned with on the ice.

Gretzky’s record of 894 career goals has stood for decades as the benchmark for greatness in the NHL. But Ovechkin, with his relentless scoring prowess, is poised to surpass that milestone and etch his name in hockey history.

As Ovechkin continues to light the lamp and rack up goals, fans and analysts alike are eagerly watching to see if he can achieve the seemingly impossible feat of breaking Gretzky’s record. With each goal, Ovechkin moves one step closer to hockey immortality.

Only time will tell if Ovechkin can achieve this remarkable feat, but one thing is certain – he is a player who has the talent, drive, and determination to make history. Stay tuned as Ovechkin continues his quest to break Gretzky’s NHL career goals record.

  • Wintry mix Friday before potential snow on Sunday, Monday – NBC4 Washington

Wintry mix Friday before potential snow on Sunday, Monday – NBC4 Washington

The start of 2025 is looking good for snow lovers.

Storm Team4 expects a wintry mix will bring some light snow to the D.C. region Friday afternoon before the potential for more significant snowfall on Sunday evening into Monday.

Here’s what’s in the forecast so far and how the region is preparing.

    Friday wintry mix

Meteorologist Jessica Faith said there’s a chance for quick-moving snow showers Friday afternoon. The Blue Ridge Mountains could see snow as early as midday, while the D.C. area is expected to get snow later in the afternoon. Rain will fall briefly before the transition to snow.

Eastern Maryland can expect the same wintry mix closer to sunset as the snow continues to make its way east, Faith said.

Friday’s snow likely won’t be much, however. Faith said to expect a dusting for the D.C. area.

Snow totals will be highest toward the west. A Winter Storm Warning will take effect from 4 a.m. Friday to 10 a.m. Saturday for some areas west of D.C.

    Snow chances Sunday, Monday

A mostly sunny and cold weekend is on tap after Friday’s light wintry mix, with highs in the 30s and lows in the 20s, Faith said.

Snow is expected to start falling late Sunday and continue into Monday. There could be a period of freezing rain, sleet and cold rain, which could affect snow totals and impacts.

“Monday’s snow is shaping up to be an impactful event that could lead to accumulating snow, icy road conditions, reduced visibility and hypothermia,” Faith said.

Heavy, wet snow and ice accumulation could bring down branches and power lines.

Storm Team4 will be keeping a close eye on the storm’s timing and potential snowfall totals as we approach Sunday and Monday. Check the Storm Team4 weather page for the latest forecast.

Snow preparations underway in DC, Maryland and Virginia

D.C. snow crews will begin pretreating roads on all of the city’s snow emergency routes Thursday evening, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said.

Twenty-one brine trucks will pretreat roads using a mixture of salt, beet juice and water from 6 p.m. Thursday until 6 a.m. Friday, Bowser’s office said in a news release.

The snow team will partially deploy on Friday from noon to midnight, with 34 heavy plows to treat highways, streets, bridges, ramps and other elevated structures. Ten pick-up truck plows will treat smaller streets, the release said.

Snow plow crews with the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) could be seen prepping on Thursday.

MDOT SHA says Maryland residents can track snow plows and trucks near them using this online tool that shows where the plows are in real-time.

Virginia Department of Transportation crews were also getting ready for the snow Thursday, the agency said on social media.

“Keep your eyes on the forecast, check your emergency kit and remember to plan travel around the storm, not during the storm,” VDOT said on X.

Bundle up, DC! We’re in for a wintry mix on Friday before a potential snowstorm hits the area on Sunday and Monday. A man is in U.S. Capitol Police custody after he was seen driving on the sidewalk just west of the Capitol on Thursday morning, authorities say. A suspicious vehicle investigation is ongoing.
