‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ Sequel Series Nears Hulu Pilot Order
In every generation, there is a chosen one — again.
Variety has learned from sources that a sequel series to the beloved show “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” is nearing a pilot order at Hulu.
Sources say that Sarah Michelle Gellar is in final talks to once again play the iconic title character in the untitled project, although it would focus on a new Slayer and Gellar would appear in a recurring role rather than leading the series.
Nora Zuckerman and Lila Zuckerman are attached to write, showrun, and executive produce. Chloé Zhao is attached to direct and executive produce under her Book of Shadows production banner. Gellar would also executive produce along with Gail Berman. Fran Kuzui and Kaz Kuzui will executive produce via Suite B, while Dolly Parton will executive produce via Sandollar. 20th Television and Searchlight Television will produce. Berman, the Kuzuis, and Parton were all executive producers on the original “Buffy” series.
Reps for Hulu and 20th TV declined to comment.
Noticeably absent from the show’s creative team is Joss Whedon, who created the original series and oversaw its seven-season run. As Variety reported in 2021, Whedon was accused of creating a toxic work environment on both “Buffy” and the spinoff series “Angel” by nearly a dozen people associated with the show.
“Buffy” and “Angel” actress Charisma Carpenter also spoke out against Whedon, with fellow cast members like Amber Benson and Michelle Trachtenberg backing up her allegations. Whedon responded to those and other allegations against him in January 2022, admitting that he had been “not mannerly” with Carpenter but otherwise saying “Most of my experiences with Charisma were delightful and charming.”
“Buffy the Vampire Slayer” originated as a film starring Kristy Swanson in the title role. Whedon wrote the film with Fran Kuzui directing. It was released in 1992. Five years later, the series version starring Gellar debuted on The WB. It would air on The WB for its first five seasons before airing its final two seasons on UPN. The cast also included Nicholas Brendon, Alyson Hannigan, Carpenter, Anthony Stewart Head, David Boreanaz, Seth Green, and James Marsters among others. Boreanaz would then head up the spinoff series “Angel” at The WB for five seasons.
“Buffy the Vampire Slayer” has proven to be a massive cult hit and highly influential since its debut. The series is credited for helping to popularize ongoing story arcs in television while also building a show around a strong female lead. It is frequently cited as one of the best television shows of all time.
Whedon previously penned a series of comic books with Dark Horse that continued the story of the series, though no new “Buffy” project has ever made it to screen. Most recently, it was reported in 2018 that Monica Owusu-Breen was working on a reboot of the series with Whedon onboard as an executive producer. Ultimately, that version of the project never went forward.
Gellar can currently be seen in the prequel series “Dexter: Original Sin” on Paramount+ with Showtime. Though she is perhaps best known for her time on “Buffy,” Gellar’s other notable TV credits include Paramount+’s “Wolf Pack,” CBS’ ”The Crazy Ones” opposite Robin Williams, and The CW’s “Ringer.” In film, she has starred in features like “Cruel Intentions,” “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” the two live-action “Scooby Doo” movies, and “The Grudge.”
The Zuckermans were the showrunners on the popular Peacock series “Poker Face” starring Natasha Lyonne during the show’s first season. Their past credits include “Prodigal Son” and “Fringe” at Fox, “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D” at ABC, “Suits” at USA Network, and “Haven” at Syfy. Variety exclusively reported they are also attached to a series adaptation of the novel “The Spy Coast” currently in the works at Amazon.
Zhao received four Oscar nominations for her 2020 film “Nomadland” starring Frances McDormand — best director, best editing, best adapted screenplay, and best picture. Zhao went on to win best director that year with “Nomadland” winning best picture. Zhao is also known for her films “The Rider” and “Songs My Brother Taught Me,” both of which she also wrote and directed. Zhao was also the director and co-writer of the Marvel film “Eternals.”
Gellar is repped by CAA, Linden Entertainment, and Yorn Levine Barnes. The Zuckermans are repped by UTA and Lichter Grossman. Zhao is repped by CAA, Ilene Feldman Management, and Lichter Grossman. Berman is repped by Ziffren Brittenham.
Should the sequel show proceed, it would be the latest series revival to find a home at Hulu. Most recently, Hulu gave a pilot order to a reboot of “Prison Break.” The streamer currently airs new episodes of the adult animated comedy “Futurama,” while a new installment of “King of the Hill” is currently in the works.
Exciting news for Buffy fans! It has been reported that a sequel series to the beloved cult classic show “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” is nearing a pilot order from streaming giant Hulu. The new series will reportedly be set in the same universe as the original show, but will feature a new cast of characters and a new slayer to take on the forces of evil.Fans of the original show, which aired from 1997 to 2003, have been eagerly anticipating a revival or continuation of the story for years. With the success of other reboots and revivals in recent years, such as “Charmed” and “Roswell, New Mexico,” it seems like the time is ripe for a return to the world of Buffy and her friends.
While details about the new series are still scarce, fans can expect plenty of action, drama, and witty banter as the new slayer battles vampires, demons, and other supernatural threats. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting development! #BuffyTheVampireSlayer #Hulu #SequelSeries

Kevin Durant nears 30,000 points: NBA players on what makes him an elite scorer
HIS INSTAGRAM HANDLE, @easymoneysniper, sums up the essence of Kevin Durant‘s scoring ability.
His teammates, even the fellow future Hall of Famers, have always been in awe of how uniquely smooth, simple and pure Durant makes getting buckets look. That has been the case from the time he broke into the league as a rail-thin teenager to now, when Durant continues to rank among the league’s most prolific, efficient scorers in the 18th season of his career.
“He’s that guy that you see almost like a monument in a science museum of just like, what does a great scorer look like?” former Brooklyn Nets and Team USA teammate Kyrie Irving told ESPN. “Seven feet, able to handle the ball, able to shoot over anybody, but also a fierce competitor.”
Durant had established himself as a historically elite scorer before he even hit his prime, winning four NBA scoring titles by the age of 25. Only Michael Jordan (10) and Wilt Chamberlain (7) have claimed more scoring crowns. Durant has racked up points with remarkable precision, joining Larry Bird and Steve Nash as the only players in NBA history with multiple 50/40/90 shooting-split seasons. And he hasn’t declined at age 36, averaging 27.1 points this season, which matches his career average that ranks sixth all time. It’s the 16th season that Durant has averaged at least 25 points, which is more than everyone in league history except for LeBron James (20).
Durant is approaching the 30,000-point milestone entering Friday’s game against the Golden State Warriors (10 p.m. ET on ESPN), just 94 points shy of becoming only the eighth member of that exclusive NBA club.
Ahead of Durant’s latest scoring milestone, several of his teammates over the years discussed the elements that make the 15-time All-Star one of the most unique, complete scorers ever to pick up a basketball.
Seattle SuperSonics/Oklahoma City Thunder, 2007 to 2016: 17,566 points in 641 games (27.4 PPG)
Durant won Rookie of the Year during the SuperSonics’ final season in Seattle and emerged as the peach-fuzzed face of the franchise for the NBA’s most exciting young team soon after the move to Oklahoma City.
The Thunder drafted Russell Westbrook and James Harden early in the next two lotteries after selecting Durant with the No. 2 pick, giving Oklahoma City a nucleus of three future MVPs. Durant shined the brightest of the young stars, winning his first scoring title in his third season, when he averaged 30.1 points.
Durant claimed four scoring crowns in a five-year span — and joined the prestigious 50/40/90 club in the one season during that stretch that he didn’t lead the league in scoring. He won the 2013-14 MVP as a 25-year-old who averaged a career-best 32.0 points.
The Thunder seemed destined for multiple championships when Durant, at age 23, led Oklahoma City to the 2012 NBA Finals. Alas, the Thunder never made it back to that stage, as Sixth Man of the Year Harden was traded before the next season, and a combination of injuries and the Golden State dynasty kept getting in Oklahoma City’s way before Durant opted to leave in free agency in the summer of 2016.
Nick Collison (SuperSonics/Thunder, 2007 to 2016): “There were other guys that were changing the game, but it was more like bigs who could shoot and maybe put it on the floor a little bit in straight lines. He could really play on the perimeter and he’s 7 feet tall. That was what hit me right away. … He’s doing a move like a 6-foot-5 guy, but all of a sudden he’s at the rim and he’s barely jumping. He’s reaching out and dunking the ball. I just hadn’t seen it before. … To do it at 7 feet, no one had done it like that and very few guys have done it since.”
Jeff Green (SuperSonics/Thunder, 2007 to 2011; Nets, 2020-21): “It’s rare that you have seen a guy who is a legit 7-foot who can handle how he handles but also stop. He stops under control to get to a shot. You can’t block it. … I’ve never seen — in recent history, today’s game — a guy that tall with the handle that he has [and] that’s super smooth that can do what he does.”
James Harden (Thunder 2009 to 2012; Team USA, 2012; Nets, 2020 to 2022): “His change of pace, change of direction … he’ll get you leaning one way and once he crosses back over, he’s so tall that if you’re not on his hip, he’s shooting right over you or he’s getting to the basket. That right there automatically is just a different type of a handle for a 7-footer. You really don’t see that. I don’t see [another] guy at 7 feet that can shoot it fluidly like him and handle the rock and do the things he do.”
Kendrick Perkins (Thunder, 2011 to 2015): “KD’s post-up game — midpost [and] at the elbow — I think that’s what he’s mastered. He mastered that from having a lot of battles in the Western Conference against Dirk Nowitzki. Then you see him add so much to his game. Whether that’s the turnaround over both shoulders, whether that’s the one-legged fadeaway. I think adding that to his game helped him elevate in all other areas. Once he mastered that, eight out of 10 times it’s going in or he’s going to the foul line.”

Flashback: KD drops buckets in NBA debut with Sonics
On Oct. 31, 2007, No. 2 overall pick Kevin Durant made his NBA debut with the Seattle SuperSonics and scored 18 points.
Golden State Warriors, 2016 to 2019: 5,374 points in 208 games (25.8 PPG)
Durant felt the wrath of critics after deciding to leave a contender to join a Golden State core that had won a title and was coming off a record-setting 73-win regular season. But nobody can rip the results of his Bay Area tenure.
Durant’s scoring numbers dipped while sharing the ball with the Splash Brothers, Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, but he was a dominant force for some all-time great teams. The Warriors went to the Finals in all three of Durant’s seasons with the franchise and won titles the first two years. Durant was the Finals MVP on both occasions, averaging 35.2 points in the 2017 five-game series victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers and 28.8 points in the next season’s sweep of the rematch.
But Durant’s stint with the Warriors ended with disappointment following a season filled with turmoil fueled by speculation about his looming free agency. He missed a month during the playoffs with a calf strain before returning for Game 5 of the Finals, when the Toronto Raptors had the Warriors on the brink of elimination. Durant ruptured an Achilles tendon during the second quarter, which ended up being his final moments in a Golden State uniform.
Nevertheless, it was a three-year run of historic greatness.
Stephen Curry (Warriors, 2016 to 2019; Team USA, 2024): “Pure talent and work ethic. I mean, it doesn’t happen by accident. He’s been blessed with a certain skill set with his height. You can’t really rush him. He can see over pretty much most defenders. And if there’s a taller guy on, he can use his counters and all that to get good looks. But you have to worry about all three levels, and he can put it on the floor, too. So it’s kind of pick your poison.”
Zaza Pachulia (Warriors, 2016 2018): “He could score anywhere — inside, outside. If you just look at his inside game, it was as good as anyone else, either post-up or attacking the rim. His outside shooting was as good as Steph — shooting over the people, shooting on the move.”
Klay Thompson (Warriors, 2016 to 2019; Team USA, 2016): “How many 7-footers can shoot the ball from that deep like him? Maybe Dirk, Wemby now. His ball skills and his shooting touch is what I’m so impressed with. I’ve seen him shoot over everybody. I think I get him from 3, but his midrange is the best I’ve ever seen.”
Draymond Green (Warriors, 2016 to 2019; Team USA, 2016, 2021): “I mean, there’s no bad shot for him. He’s 7-feet, dribbles the ball like a point guard, shoots the ball like shooting guards, dunks the ball like centers. … If you’re a little behind, he’s 7-feet so it don’t affect his shot. You have to be right on him in order to get a contest to where it affects him at all. And you can get that same contest and he still will make it.”
Curry: “It’s a combination of being a three-level scorer and the efficiency that he has had his whole career. I know we’re both kind of obsessed with the 50/40/90 pursuit — and he got it one year [in Golden State] — but the way he does it is totally different than the way I do it. Just the fact that he’s such a graceful, efficient scorer no matter what defense you really throw at him, to do it for that many years is really impressive. So there’s a reason people talk about him as the greatest legitimate scorer ever.”
Brooklyn Nets, 2019 to 2023: 3,744 points in 129 games (29.0 PPG)
Durant joined forces with his friend Irving in free agency — and eventually Harden again via a forced trade from the Houston Rockets — to form the NBA’s next superteam in Brooklyn. The possibilities were deemed well worth waiting a full season as Durant sat out the first year of his deal while recovering from an Achilles injury. But the Nets fizzled, as that trio played a total of only 16 games together before breaking up under the weight of drama and dysfunction.
But Brooklyn was so close to breaking through. How close? Maybe only a couple of inches away.
The most memorable singular moment from Durant’s Nets tenure — and arguably his career — was his toes-on-the-3-point-line turnaround jumper in the final seconds of regulation in Game 7 of the 2021 Eastern Conference semifinals. Instead of hitting a game winner to beat the Milwaukee Bucks, Durant sent the game into overtime. The Bucks, the eventual champions, prevailed. The Nets were eliminated despite Durant’s 48-point, 53-minute performance alongside a hobbled Harden (hamstring) and without Irving (ankle).
The Nets never won another playoff game. The rest of Durant’s time in Brooklyn was marred by controversy involving his co-stars, resulting in first Harden and then Irving getting their trade requests granted. Durant was the last of the trio out the door, as the Nets dealt him when it became apparent that a rebuild was necessary.
Harden: “He don’t care where you at. You could be a tall defender, shorter defender. Once he raises up, all he sees is that rim. It’s unbelievable.”
Royce O’Neale (Nets, 2022-23; Suns, 2024 to present): “He’s stronger than you think and he looks. He uses his body and his athleticism to shoot over you, to get to the elbows. His hesi pull, you might know it’s coming, but he’s still getting it off. It’s just all the hard work and routine for him and the craft that he puts in. Once he gets there, you better hope he misses, but it’s tough. You can’t block it. It’s a high-arching shot. I always say he’s the toughest player I’ve had to guard.”
Jeff Green: “Obviously he’s a volume shooter, but the efficiency of how he scores, it’s not like he’s going 6-for-25. He’s going a cool 13-for-19, 14-for-20. It’s not like people are making him miss. If he misses, it’s because he missed. And he makes a lot of tough shots.”
Kyrie Irving (Team USA 2016; Nets, 2019 to 2023): “He’s a scientist out there. He’s always hovering around 50/40/90. Man, he’s like an efficient machine when it comes to breaking down how he goes about scoring and doing it for so long.”
Spencer Dinwiddie (Nets, 2019 to 2021): “He’s just really good at, no matter where he is at on the floor, just kind of getting square up to the basket and then [shooting with a] high release point. And obviously you’re not going to block it. The balance, the rhythm and all that stuff, it’s just something you’ve never seen from a 7-footer before. KD’s just pure skill. He’s just smooth. We ain’t never seen nothing like it. We probably never will, to be honest.”

Reliving Durant and Harden’s time together in OKC
With Kevin Durant and James Harden teaming up in Brooklyn, revisit some of their best moments together as teammates on the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Phoenix Suns, 2023 to present: 3,222 points in 119 games (27.1 PPG)
Mat Ishbia made a massive splash in his first night as Suns owner, pulling off a blockbuster deal to pair Durant with perennial All-Star shooting guard Devin Booker. The cost was steep: a package that featured forwards Mikal Bridges and Cam Johnson, who were key members of the Suns’ 2021 Finals squad, along with four unprotected first-round picks and a swap.
Durant’s scoring brilliance has continued in the desert — “His longevity, it’s undeniable,” former Suns teammate Chris Paul said — but Phoenix’s ultra-aggressive front office has failed to construct a contender-caliber supporting cast around its star duo.
The Suns, who have been trying hard to turn their limited assets into another trade upgrade, are mired in play-in territory despite Durant not having slowed down as he nears another milestone.
Bradley Beal (Suns, 2023 to present): “People don’t really understand how good his feet are. Granted for his size, too, just his ability to be able to get by his defender with the first quick step, whether that’s with a jab or just a simple just catch and rip. … I think that’s probably what separates him from a lot of guys, is just that continuity of being able to constantly get to your spot without any resistance almost. … As a defender, you have to press up on him because [if] you sit off of him, he can just rise up over you. But the minute you press up on him, he’s really talented enough to get low, sweep through, jab you one way and you’re gone.”
O’Neale: “He knows exactly where he wants to get and what type of shots he wants to shoot. I think the fact that he’s unpredictable in a lot of it matters. You never know if he’s going to hit you with a pull-up, drive, fadeaway. He’s just got so many things that he can counteract with. That makes him so tough to guard — just his counterattacks versus you, the way he sees the game and the way he shoots the ball.”
Tyus Jones (Suns, 2024 to present): “Practice, games — he shoots at a high clip all the time. It’s very impressive and it’s motivating to be around that, to be around the greatness of that and to see his work ethic. He — knock on wood — rarely has an off night. He’s able to get to his spots, he scores at every level, different ways, going right, going left. So I would say the efficiency is just the most impressive. He’s not shooting a ton of shots to score a bunch of points.”
Mason Plumlee (Suns, 2024 to present): “It feels like he’s never forced a shot. The thing that kind of also made me think of that was I was watching him do a podcast with JJ [Redick], and JJ is like, ‘Why don’t one game you just shoot it every time? You can raise up over and just [shoot].’ He’s a pure basketball player, so he’s not going to take bad shots [although] he has every right to, and nobody would say anything to him if he wants to. So even his end-of-clock, tough shots against two guys, he makes ’em look fundamental. I mean, it’s amazing. Some guys that hit two, three shots in a row, they’re shooting the next one. The heat check will be just a disgusting shot. And Kev just takes good shots.”
Jones: “You put smaller guys on him, he shoots over the top of them. Put bigger guys on him, he’s going to make them dance. So it’s just a mismatch and he scores very, very effortlessly.”
Beal: “You try not to be a fanboy, but it’s amazing to see for sure.”
Devin Booker (Suns, 2022 to present; Team USA, 2021, 2024): “We’ve never seen it before. Everyone tries to emulate it, and we still haven’t seen it. So he’s just a one-of-a-kind type player and the greatest scorer to ever live.”
ESPN’s Tim Bontemps and Michael C. Wright and ESPN Research’s Matt Williams contributed to this report.
Kevin Durant, one of the most prolific scorers in NBA history, is on the cusp of reaching a major milestone: 30,000 career points. As the Brooklyn Nets superstar inches closer to this impressive feat, his fellow NBA players are weighing in on what sets him apart as an elite scorer.Durant, a two-time NBA Finals MVP and four-time scoring champion, has long been known for his effortless scoring ability. Standing at 6’10” with a deadly outside shot and the ability to score from anywhere on the court, Durant poses a unique challenge for defenders.
LeBron James, who has faced off against Durant numerous times throughout their careers, praised the 10-time All-Star for his versatility and skill. “KD can score in so many different ways,” James said. “His size, his shooting touch, his ability to create his own shot – he’s truly a special talent.”
Stephen Curry, Durant’s former teammate with the Golden State Warriors, echoed James’ sentiments. “KD is a nightmare to guard,” Curry said. “He can shoot over anyone, drive past anyone, and he’s just so efficient. He’s a walking bucket.”
Durant’s scoring prowess has also earned him the respect of younger players in the league, such as Zion Williamson of the New Orleans Pelicans. “Watching KD play is like watching an artist at work,” Williamson said. “He makes scoring look so easy, but you know how much work he puts in to make it look that way.”
As Durant approaches the 30,000-point milestone, it is clear that his impact on the game goes far beyond just putting the ball in the basket. His scoring ability has inspired a new generation of players and solidified his legacy as one of the greatest scorers in NBA history.

BUT FOR SATURDAY AND THE MADHOUSE CLASSIC AT BOWMAN GRAY LOOKS PRETTY DRY. TEMPERATURES NOT BAD BY ABOUT 1:45 P.M. A NICE AFTERNOON, MOSTLY SUNNY, AND TEMPERATURES INTO THE UPPER 50S. THEN FOR SUNDAY, YOU’LL HAVE TO BATTLE A LITTLE BIT MORE IN THE WAY OF SOME COLDER WEATHER. MIGHT BE A FEW CLOUDS FROM TIME TO TIME. THE MAIN EVENT 8:00. IT WILL BE A LITTLE CHILLY. TEMPERATURES WILL BE IN THE 40S, SO YOU’LL STILL NEED TO BUNDLE UP IF YOU’RE GOING TO HEAD OUT THERE. SITTING IN THE STANDS AT BOWMAN GRAY. WE’VE GOT CLOUDS OUT THERE THIS AFTERNOON. THIS EVENING. TO START OUT WITH SOME SUNSHINE EARLIER TODAY. THEN THE CLOUDS KIND OF FILTERED IN. NOW THEY’RE STARTING TO THICKEN UP JUST A LITTLE BIT TO TEMPERATURES VERY MILD. WE’RE IN THE UPPER 50S EVERYWHERE AT THE MOMENT 60 YANCEYVILLE AND ALSO BACK OUT AT MOCKSVILLE AND DOWN IN MONTGOMERY COUNTY TOO. THE BREEZES HAVE BEEN UP OUT OF THE SOUTH SOUTHEAST, NOT NEARLY AS WINDY AS IT WAS YESTERDAY, BUT IT’S THAT SOUTHERLY FLOW THAT ONCE AGAIN ALLOWED OUR TEMPERATURES TO GO UP THE THERMOMETER A LITTLE BIT MORE TODAY. 40S INTO THE MOUNTAINS AT THIS HOUR. SO CHILLIER UP THERE. 54 HOWEVER, IN NORTH WILKESBORO INTO THE FOOTHILL COMMUNITIES, AND THEIR WINDS HAVE DIED DOWN CONSIDERABLY WHERE THEY WERE QUITE IMPRESSIVE YESTERDAY AFTERNOON, HIGH TEMPERATURES ACHIEVED SO FAR TODAY, 61 BURLINGTON AND WINSTON-SALEM AND ASHEBORO 63, IN LEXINGTON AND REIDSVILLE. SO WE HAD ANOTHER WARM DAY OUT THERE, WELL ABOVE NORMAL FOR OUR TEMPERATURES. WE’RE STILL DRY OUT THERE, SO WE’RE GOING TO HAVE ONE MORE DAY IN THE MONTH TOMORROW. WE’RE GOING TO HAVE ONE MORE DAY TOMORROW FOR THAT CHANCE FOR SOME RAIN TO DEVELOP, WITH A LITTLE OVER THREE QUARTERS OF AN INCH SO FAR FOR THE MONTH, WE’RE BELOW NORMAL, A LITTLE OVER 2.25IN FOR THE MONTH SO FAR AS WELL, SO WE COULD USE SOME RAIN AND THE DROUGHT MONITOR HAS BEEN UPDATED FROM TODAY. AND THIS MODERATE DROUGHT AREA IS SLOWLY BEEN DRIFTING OFF TO THE WEST A LITTLE BIT MORE OUT OF FORSYTH COUNTY NOW INTO DAVIE AND YADKIN AND IREDELL COUNTY TOO. WE’LL SEE IF THAT CONTINUES. WE LOOK PRETTY DRY AFTER THIS RAIN. CHANCE FOR THE DAY TOMORROW AS WE GET IN BEYOND THE SEVEN DAY FORECAST, AND YOU’LL SEE THAT IN JUST A FEW MINUTES. SO THIS IS A REALLY BEST CHANCE OF RAIN WE’VE HAD IN QUITE SOME TIME. IT’S NOT GOING TO BE LONG LIVED THOUGH. ALSO, WE’VE HAD FIRE DANGER OUT THERE THE PAST FEW DAYS. HIGH AND VERY HIGH CONDITIONS BACK OUT TOWARDS AREAS OF THE FOOTHILL COUNTIES. SO THAT WILL HELP TO SUPPRESS THAT A LITTLE BIT MORE TOO. HERE ARE THE RAINS. AND NOTICE THEY’RE KIND OF LIFTING OFF TO THE NORTH WITH AN AREA OF LOW PRESSURE. THERE’S BEEN SOME FLOOD WARNINGS BACK OUT OVER PORTIONS OF ARKANSAS FROM EARLIER TODAY. SOME RAIN SHOWERS DEPICTED ON THE RADAR HERE. WE’RE PRETTY DRY IN THE LOWER LEVELS. THE LOWER SEVERAL HUNDRED FEET THOUSAND FEET IN THE ATMOSPHERE. SO MOST OF THIS NOT QUITE REACHING THE GROUND, BUT IT IS SATURATING THE ATMOSPHERE. AND THAT COLUMN, AND AS IT DOES, THAT WILL ALLOW SOME OF THIS RAINDROPS TO START TO HIT THE GROUND. MAYBE THIS EVENING IN A SPOTTY FASHION, BUT REALLY BETTER CHANCES TOMORROW, MILD THROUGHOUT THE SOUTHEAST. HERE’S THE STORM SYSTEM, AND IT’S NOW PUSHING INTO AREAS OF ARKANSAS. IT WILL MOVE ITS WAY OFF TO THE NORTH AND EAST WITH TIME, BUT THAT’S WHAT’S WHERE THE BULK OF THE RAIN WILL COME FROM. AS WE GET INTO THE DAY TOMORROW. SO SPOTTY EARLY SHOWERS AS WE GET INTO THE DAY FRIDAY, MAINLY AFTERNOON RAIN FOR THE MOST PART. RAINFALL TOTALS THROUGH THAT TIME FRAME THROUGH ABOUT MIDNIGHT OR SO FRIDAY NIGHT, MAYBE UPWARDS OF THREE QUARTERS OF AN INCH, MAYBE A LITTLE ISOLATED THUNDER. THE THING IS, YOU MIGHT HAVE A WET COMMUTE TOMORROW ON YOUR WAY HOME. THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY. THERE’S A CHANCE WE COULD SEE OR HEAR A RUMBLE OF THUNDER OR TWO, BUT MOST OF THAT WILL BE DOWN TO OUR SOUTH. DON’T BE SURPRISED BY THAT, BUT I THINK IT WOULD BE VERY RANDOM IF YOU SEE IT 47 IN THE MORNING. THE CLOUDS ARE QUITE PROMINENT. YOU MIGHT GET A COUPLE BREAKS OF SUN IN THERE TOMORROW. 67 SPOTTY SHOWERS. THE BEST CHANCE FOR RAIN AS WE GET INTO LATER IN THE AFTERNOON IN THE PIEDMONT 60 IN THE FOOTHILLS TOMORROW. AND THOSE SHOWERS LIKELY AND THE WINDS WILL BE UP TO MOSTLY IN THE PIEDMONT, THOUGH WE’LL SEE SOME PRETTY HIGH WIND CONDITIONS TOMORROW. AND IN THE MOUNTAINS, THE WINDS WILL BE UP TO PATCHY SHOWERS. EARLY CHANCE OF RAIN IN THE AFTERNOON AND TEMPERATURES INTO THE LOW AND MID 50S IN THE MOUNTAINS. FOR YOUR FRIDAY. HERE’S SATURDAY AND SUNDAY. NOW ALL THAT CLEARS OUT AS WE GET INTO THE OVERNIGHT, FRIDAY NIGHT AND SATURDAY AND SUNDAY. PRETTY DRY AND NOT BAD TEMPERATURE WISE. 60 SATURDAY 54 SUNDAY. AND THEN WE’RE INTO THE MID AND UPPER 60

Warriors among several teams back in the mix on Jimmy Butler as NBA trade deadline nears: Sources
The Golden State Warriors are one of several teams back in the running for Jimmy Butler’s services now that the Miami Heat have lowered their asking price, according to Yahoo Sports’ Kevin O’Connor.
Momentum for a trade may be picking up one day after Butler’s latest suspension by the Heat on Monday, his third this month. This suspension is “indefinite,” after Butler apparently walked out of shootaround Monday morning after learning the team wasn’t going to start him in its game against the Orlando Magic, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
Butler will be suspended for a minimum of five games, which would run through the Feb. 6 trade deadline.
The Heat first suspended Butler for seven games on Jan. 3 for what the Heat called “multiple instances of conduct detrimental to the team.” He briefly returned but was then suspended for two games last week after he missed a team flight for a road trip.
Before his first suspension, Butler made clear he wanted a trade, despite the Heat being initially resistant to fulfilling that request.
Previously, the Suns had been a possible trade destination after they stockpiled draft picks in a trade with the Jazz last week.
The NBA trade deadline is quickly approaching, and teams are scrambling to make moves to improve their rosters. One player who has been at the center of trade talks is Jimmy Butler, and several teams are back in the mix to acquire the talented guard.According to sources, the Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers, and Miami Heat are among the teams interested in making a move for Butler. The Warriors are looking to add another star player to their already stacked lineup, while the Lakers are hoping to pair Butler with LeBron James to make a championship run. The Heat, on the other hand, are looking to bring Butler back to Miami, where he previously played before being traded to the Philadelphia 76ers.
With the trade deadline fast approaching, it will be interesting to see which team ultimately lands Butler and how it will impact the rest of the NBA landscape. Stay tuned for more updates as the deadline approaches.

Newcastle set to complete first January transfer move as star midfielder nears exit
Newcastle United are preparing to confirm their first major exit of the January window, with Miguel Almiron set to return to Atlanta United.
The 30-year-old winger, who joined Newcastle from the MLS side in 2019, is close to finalizing a £10 million ($12.3m) move back to his former club.
Almiron has played a key role in Newcastle’s success over the past few years. He made 222 appearances and scored 30 goals for the club, including an impressive run of eight goals in nine games during the 2022-23 season.
His contributions helped Newcastle secure a Champions League spot for the 23/24 season, and he made history by scoring the club’s first goal in the competition in more than two decades during their 4-1 win against Paris Saint-Germain in October 2023.
Almiron closing in on Newcastle transfer exit
Despite his past success, Almiron’s role at Newcastle has diminished this season. He has made only one Premier League start, with head coach Eddie Howe struggling to fit him into the squad regularly.
Although Howe would prefer to keep his squad together, the offer from Atlanta is seemingly too good to ignore.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano recently reported that the deal is close to completion. He stated: “Atlanta United are closing in on Miguel Almirón deal with Newcastle as move is being completed. Transfer fee around £10m.”

Almiron is expected to be the first permanent departure from Newcastle this month. Initially, there were talks of goalkeeper Martin Dubravka moving to Saudi Pro League club Al-Shabab – but he has stayed and remained part of Newcastle’s starting lineup.

Other potential departures for Newcastle
Newcastle have also confirmed several loan departures. Isaac Hayden has joined Portsmouth, Charlie McArthur moved to Carlisle United, Travis Hernes signed with Aalborg BK, and Alex Murphy joined Bolton Wanderers until the end of the season.
Defender Lloyd Kelly is another potential exit, with Juventus reportedly interested. Since joining Newcastle on a free transfer, he has made just four Premier League starts. Juventus are said to be preparing a fresh bid as Newcastle weigh their options.
Newcastle United are on the brink of completing their first January transfer move as star midfielder Jonjo Shelvey nears an exit from the club.Shelvey, who has been with the Magpies since 2016, has fallen out of favor under manager Eddie Howe and is keen to secure a move away in search of regular playing time.
Reports suggest that Newcastle have agreed a deal with an unnamed club for the transfer of Shelvey, with the move expected to be finalized in the coming days.
The departure of Shelvey is set to open up opportunities for other players in the squad, with Newcastle looking to strengthen their midfield options in the January transfer window.
Fans will be eagerly awaiting confirmation of Shelvey’s departure and the club’s next move in the transfer market as they aim to bolster their squad for the second half of the season. Stay tuned for more updates on Newcastle’s transfer dealings.

Detroit Tigers, Alex Bregman negotiations at standstill as spring training nears
Third baseman Alex Bregman — the consensus best position player remaining in free agency — is ready to sign a contract as spring training approaches.
The Detroit Tigers remain interested, but negotiations are at a standstill with less than one month until the first full-squad workout in spring training, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. Detroit needs a right-handed hitting third baseman and has the payroll flexibility to lock up a franchise-altering free agent.
It’s unclear if other teams are more actively pursuing Bregman.
Bregman, who turns 31 in late March, has been courted by the Tigers, Boston Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays, among other teams, after rejecting a six-year, $156 million contract to re-sign with the Houston Astros because he wanted $200 million.
ROSTER PREDICTION 2.0:Should Jace Jung get runway at third base in 2025 as Opening Day starter?
The gap in perceived value between the Tigers and Bregman still exists. For example, the Tigers refuse to pay $200 million and Bregman refuses to accept a short-term deal. Talks between the two sides have reached a standstill, even though there’s mutual interest.
“It’s really a matter of his decision-making and theirs, about how you can close up that gap,” agent Scott Boras told USA Today reporter Bob Nightengale recently about Bregman’s market. “There’s substantial interest (in long-term) deals.”
WHY THEY NEED HIM:Why free-agent Alex Bregman can help Tigers on the field, behind the scenes
The Blue Jays impacted the free-agent market Monday by signing outfielder Anthony Santander to a five-year, $92.5 million contract, which extends to six years and $110 million if the Blue Jays void his opt-out clause after the third season. The Tigers showed interest in Santander as a potential fallback option to Bregman but were never considered frontrunners.
As for Bregman, the Tigers have to decide whether to lead the market or follow the market. So far, it seems like the Tigers are following the market for Bregman by waiting for a different team to make the first move, then jumping into the mix.
Following the market could both help and hurt the Tigers’ chances of signing Bregman.
The best-case scenario for Detroit? Bregman receives no other long-term offers, leaving the Tigers as the last team standing. The worst-case scenarios? Bregman decides to sign elsewhere without giving the Tigers a chance to counter, leaving the Tigers without control of the market, or he opts for a short-term deal with opt outs, attracting more teams into the bidding.
WHAT WE KNOW:How, when, where will Tigers target Alex Bregman sign? Breaking down possibilities
With Santander off the board, here are the top five position players available in free agency as spring training nears: Bregman, first baseman Pete Alonso, infielder Ha-Seong Kim, outfielder Jurickson Profar and outfielder Alex Verdugo.
The Tigers don’t need a first baseman after signing Gleyber Torres to play second base and moving Colt Keith to first base, so Bregman represents the final opportunity to make an All-Star-caliber upgrade to the offense via free agency.

The only other option lives on the trade market, as the St. Louis Cardinals are desperate to trade third baseman Nolan Arenado — and the remaining three years on his contract while paying down some of the $74 million — before Opening Day.
But Bregman is the top prize.
A phone call or text message from either side could spark negotiations again.
Picking up the phone could go a long way.

With spring training just around the corner, the Detroit Tigers and star third baseman Alex Bregman are still at a standstill in contract negotiations.Bregman, who is entering the final year of his current deal, has been seeking a long-term extension with the Tigers. However, the two sides have yet to come to an agreement on the terms of a potential new contract.
The Tigers are reportedly willing to make Bregman one of the highest-paid players in the league, but the two parties remain far apart on the length and value of the deal.
With time running out before players report to spring training, both Bregman and the Tigers are feeling the pressure to reach a resolution. Bregman is a key piece of the Tigers’ lineup and losing him would be a significant blow to the team’s chances of competing in the upcoming season.
As the negotiations continue, fans are left wondering whether a deal will be struck before spring training begins, or if Bregman will hit the open market next offseason. Only time will tell.

Ukrainians’ hopes and concerns as Trump presidency nears
BBC/Xavier Vanpevenaege
Anastasiia’s husband, Andriy, will never get the chance to meet his baby daughter Anastasiia Fedchenko, 36, wails in anguish – her agony echoing around the gilded walls of St Michael’s Cathedral in Kyiv.
She sits with her hands resting on both sides of her stomach. She is heavily pregnant with her first child, a baby girl. Her husband Andriy Kusmenko is just inches away, in uniform – in an open coffin.
The marine commander was killed in action in eastern Ukraine on 4 January this year. He is now and forever 33. While Andriy fought in the war, Anastasiia wrote about it, as a journalist.
His brothers in arms file past, dropping red roses into his coffin. As funeral prayers come to an end, Anastasiia leans forward and gives “the love of her life” one last kiss.
BBC/Xavier Vanpevenaege
Andriy was killed in action on the front line at the start of the year Outside the cathedral she pays tribute to her “most handsome husband” who died for his country.
“I am sorry my daughter will never see her father,” she tells the BBC, “but she will know that he was a soldier, an officer, and that he did everything he could for Ukraine to exist for her and for other generations.”
“This war will last as long as Russia does. I truly fear our children will inherit it from us and will have to go and fight.”
Not according to Donald Trump, who famously claimed he could end the war in a day, and who returns to the White House next week. He is already pushing for peace talks between Ukraine and Russia.
That would dishonour the dead, according to Sgt Dmytro, call sign “Smile”, who fought alongside Andriy and came to the cathedral to mourn him.
“Let the people in power decide, but I don’t think the ones who fell would want them [Ukraine’s leadership] to sit around the table,” he says.
“After the funeral, we are heading back to work. We will fight for every Ukrainian who fell.”
Plenty here believe – like Anastasiia and Dmytro – that far too many Ukrainians have been killed to try to do a deal with Russia. But public opinion is shifting, and others believe there is too much death and destruction not to do a deal.
BBC/Xavier Vanpevenaege
Andriy Kusmenko’s fellow soldiers came to the cathedral to honour him As Ukraine battles through its third winter of war, one word is now little spoken here – “victory”.
In the early days of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, we heard it everywhere. It was a rallying cry for a nation suddenly confronted by columns of enemy tanks. But the past is truly a foreign country – and one with more territory.
Moscow now controls almost one-fifth of its neighbour (including the Crimean Peninsula, captured in 2014) and says any peace talks must take that into account.
The Ukraine of 2025 is a place of cold, hard realities – where cities empty, graveyards fill, and plenty of soldiers desert their posts.
BBC/Goktay Koraltan
Up to 100,000 cases have been opened against soldiers, such as Serhiy Hnezdilov, who have deserted their units Six hours drive from the capital, in the heart of Ukraine, a young soldier is in the dock.
Serhiy Hnezdilov, a burly 24-year-old, is locked in a glass cubicle in a packed courtroom in the city of Dnipro. He is on trial on charges of desertion, and is one of many.
Since 2022, around 100,000 cases have been opened against soldiers who left their units, according to data from Ukraine’s General Prosecutor’s office.
When Hnezdilov went absent without leave, he went public with demands for a clear time frame for ending military service. He says he is ready to fight but not without a plan for demobilisation. He has already served for five years, including two before Russia’s full-scale invasion.
“We must continue to fight,” he told me during a break in the hearing, “we have no other choice.”
“But soldiers are not slaves. Everyone who has spent three years or more on the front line deserves the right to rest. The authorities have been promising for a very long time to set terms of service, but they have not done it.”
In court he also complained of corruption among commanders, and of deadly incompetence.
After the brief procedural hearing, he was handcuffed for the journey back to prison. If convicted he faces up to 12 years in jail. “Help Ukraine,” he told us, as he was led away.
BBC/Goktay Koraltan
“I am tired… time off is rare,” says Mykhailo, a drone unit commander Many other Ukrainian soldiers are still straining every sinew on the front lines, trying to at least slow the Russian advance.
Mykhailo, 42, the chain-smoking commander of a drone unit, does battle every night fuelled by “Non-Stop” – a Ukrainian energy drink.
He is with the 68th “Jaeger” Brigade, fighting to hold on to the eastern front-line city of Pokrovsk – a key transportation hub. The Russians are closing in on two sides.
Mykhailo drives us to a Ukrainian position – a journey we can only risk after dark, and in an armoured car. The Russians too have eyes in the skies. Their drones are a constant threat. He is watchful, and weary.
“I went to the enlistment office in the first days,” he tells us, “and I hoped everything would go quickly. Honestly, I am tired. Time off is rare [in his case a total of 40 days in three years]. The only thing that saves me is that I can video chat with my family.”
BBC/Goktay Koraltan
Mykhailo and his fellow soldiers at a pop-up drone position, trying to slow the Russian advance on the eastern city of Pokrovsk We arrive at a disused house where Mykhailo and his men unload their equipment and set up a pop-up drone position. Screens are carried in, and cables connected.
Outside, troops erect an antenna taller than a two-story building. They work fast under torchlight – using red beams not white as these are harder to detect. Then they assemble bombs to arm their “vampire” – a supersized attack drone.
For the next few hours, we have front-row seats as Mykhailo – call sign “Admin” – pilots the drone, his eyes darting from screen to screen. First, he drops supplies to front-line Ukrainian troops and then drops an anti-tank mine on Russian forces underground. It falls slightly wide of its target.
He is up against high winds and Russian jamming. All the while he is on the look-out for incoming enemy drones.
BBC/Goktay Koraltan
Ukrainian troops send supersized attack drones into combat in the skies as the Russians inch forward Mykhailo detects a Russian warplane in the skies. Minutes later we hear the distinct thud of three Russian glide bombs. “It’s far,” he tells us. That turns out to mean two to three kilometres away.
During a lull, I ask Mykhailo if he thinks a peace deal is possible. “Maybe not,” he says. “This [Putin] is a completely unstable person, and that’s putting it very gently.”
“I hope that at some stage the enemy will stop because they tire out, or someone with a sound mind comes to power.”
He won’t comment on President Trump.
While Mykhailo is a veteran of this war, one of his men is a beginner. Twenty-four-year-old David joined up last September as the Russians neared his hometown. He now spends his time handling explosives – though he would prefer to be at college learning languages.
BBC/Goktay Koraltan
Mykhailo’s unit works under torchlight – using red beams not white as these are harder to detect “No-one knows how long the war will last,” he says, “maybe not even the politicians”.
“I would like it to end soon so that civilians won’t suffer, and people won’t die anymore. But considering how things are now on the front line, it won’t be soon.”
He believes that if the guns are silenced, it will be only a pause, before Moscow comes back for more.
The winds get stronger and the vampire drone crash-lands. It’s out of action for now. The unit pack up and leave, as fast as they came. They will be back in action at nightfall, resuming the duels in the sky.
But on the ground the Russians keep inching forward, and the Trump presidency will mean pressure for a deal. And there is one more hard truth here: if it comes it is unlikely to be on Ukraine’s terms.
Additional reporting by Wietske Burema, Goktay Koraltan, Anastasiia Levchenko and Volodymyr Lozhko.
As the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump draws near, Ukrainians are both hopeful and concerned about the future of their country’s relationship with the United States. Many Ukrainians are hopeful that the Trump administration will be more supportive of Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia. Throughout his campaign, Trump expressed a desire to improve relations with Russia, which has raised concerns that he may be less inclined to support Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression. However, some Ukrainians are optimistic that Trump’s tough stance on Russia and his commitment to fighting terrorism will translate into increased support for Ukraine.
On the other hand, there are concerns among Ukrainians about Trump’s unpredictable nature and his lack of experience in foreign policy. There is a fear that Trump’s unorthodox approach to international relations could lead to uncertainty and instability in the region, which could have negative consequences for Ukraine.
Overall, Ukrainians are cautiously optimistic about the future of their country’s relationship with the United States under the Trump administration. They are hopeful that Trump will stand by Ukraine in its struggle for independence and territorial integrity, but they are also wary of the potential challenges that may arise from his presidency. Only time will tell how the Trump administration will impact Ukraine, but Ukrainians are watching closely and hoping for the best.

Gaza Cease-Fire Between Israel and Hamas Nears: Live Updates
Israel is due to release more than 1,000 Palestinian prisoners over the course of the 42-day initial cease-fire, according to the terms of the agreement, beginning with at least 90 on Sunday in exchange for three Israeli hostages held by Hamas in Gaza.
Israelis say that many of the prisoners are terrorists and murderers. Many Palestinians see the imprisoned militants as freedom fighters against Israeli rule, and they argue that others were jailed by an unfair Israeli military justice system.
Here are several of the most prominent Palestinian prisoners set to be released under the cease-fire, according to the Israeli Justice Ministry.
Zakaria Zubeidi
Over the past two decades, Zakaria Zubeidi, 49, has been a militant, a theater director, and an escaped prisoner whose flight stunned Israelis and Palestinians alike.
Mr. Zubeidi rose to prominence as a militant leader during the Second Intifada, or uprising, in the early 2000s, during which Palestinian militants committed deadly attacks against Israelis, including suicide bombings targeting civilian thoroughfares.
Israel responded by reoccupying major Palestinian cities amid street battles. Some of the toughest fighting took place in the Palestinian city of Jenin, Mr. Zubeidi’s hometown. He later emerged as a top commander in the Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades, an armed militia loosely linked with the secular Fatah party, the dominant Palestinian political faction in the West Bank.
After the uprising, Mr. Zubeidi worked at a theater inside the hardscrabble Jenin refugee camp. In 2019, Israel arrested him again on charges that he had returned to militancy.
Two years later, Mr. Zubeidi and five other Palestinian prisoners conducted a jailbreak by crawling nearly 32 yards through an underground tunnel outside one of Israel’s maximum-security prisons. Although they were later recaptured, the security breach shook Israelis and thrilled Palestinians.
An Israeli drone strike killed Mr. Zubeidi’s son, Mohammad, in September. The Israeli military called the son a “significant terrorist” and said he had been involved in shooting at Israeli troops.
Wissam Abbasi, Mohammad Odeh and Wael Qassim
Wissam Abbasi, 48, Mohammad Odeh, 52, and Wael Qassim, 54, were jailed in 2002 on accusations of carrying out Hamas attacks against Israelis during the Second Intifada. According to Israel’s justice ministry, the three men were given life sentences for murder and a string of other crimes.
According to contemporary Israeli media reports, the men were among several convicted of being involved in a Hamas cell in Jerusalem that was responsible for a string of bombings that killed over 30 Israelis in crowded civilian areas.
The attacks included a Hamas bombing at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem that killed nine people, including four U.S. citizens, according to the Israeli authorities.
Mr. Odeh, who was working as a painter at the university, planted the bomb in a cafeteria and covered it with a newspaper, The New York Times reported at the time, citing Israeli officials. When he left, he remotely detonated the explosive with a cellphone, the officials said.
Under the terms of the cease-fire deal, the men will not be allowed to return to their homes in Jerusalem, according to the Israeli justice ministry. They will be required to live in exile, although it is unclear where they will be allowed to go.

One of the most prominent Palestinian prisoners expected to be released as early as Sunday is Khalida Jarrar, 62, a leader in the left-wing Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine.
Ms. Jarrar, a prominent activist for the rights of Palestinians jailed by Israel, was elected to the Palestinian Parliament in the 2006 elections.
The United States and the European Union consider the Popular Front a terrorist organization. The group became notorious in the late 1960s for a series of plane hijackings, as well as other attacks, including during the Second Intifada.
Ghassan Jarrar, her husband, said in a telephone interview that the Israeli authorities had not allowed him to visit his wife since her arrest in December 2023. He has grasped for any news of her condition he could get from rare visits by her lawyer, he said.
Ms. Jarrar has spent much of the past decade in and out of Israeli prison, although she has not been convicted of direct involvement in the Popular Front’s military activities. In 2015, she was sentenced to 15 months for incitement and belonging to a banned organization.
In recent years, Israel has mostly held Ms. Jarrar without formal charges. Rights groups call the practice a severe violation of due process, while Israel says it is necessary at times to protect sensitive intelligence.
In 2021, her daughter Suha died while Ms. Jarrar was being held in an Israeli prison. Israel denied a request to grant her a humanitarian furlough to attend the funeral.
