What is the plot of Stranger Things?

As the story progresses, supernatural forces tied to secret government experiments cause an extraordinary young girl named Eleven to emerge from Will’s friend group, who has unique abilities to fight evil.

Netflix Top 10 Titles for the Week of Jan. 13, 2025
Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz proved a dream team in the spy flick Back in Action, which debuted at No. 1 on the Top 10 English Film list with 46.8 million views. It’s the most views in a premiere weekend for an English-language movie since The Adam Project arrived in March 2022. Since its Jan. 17 debut, Back in Action has made its mark as a crowd-pleaser: it reached No. 1 in 85 countries, which is the most for an English-language movie since 2023’s Extraction 2, and landed in the Top 10 in 93 countries.

Fans couldn’t get enough of Diaz in action, propelling 2010’s Knight and Day to No. 4 on the English Film list with 5.2 million views. Meanwhile, Carry-On made a smooth landing at No. 5 with 3.6 million views. The airport thriller, starring Taron Egerton, Sofia Carson, and Jason Bateman, has now secured the No. 3 spot on the Most Popular English Films list with 160.1 million views. And the hits kept coming, with yet another original action flick, France’s Ad Vitam, retaining its No. 1 spot for a second week in non-English Film with 25.5 million views.

The action of American Primeval, a harrowing dramatization of the real-life Mountain Meadows Massacre in 1857, also resonated with audiences. After a nearly two-year wait one of the best shows on Netflix just dropped its second season, and it’s great. If you enjoy high-octane action, nefarious terrorist plots and plenty of tense espionage, you’re in for a treat.

The Night Agent is a no-frills, unpretentious spy thriller that should please anyone who enjoys the genre. It combines a competent plot with a likeable cast of heroes and villains. The second season is out now on Netflix, but if you missed the first you should definitely start there.

Season 1 of The Night Agent introduces us to the secretive Night Action program, a top-secret federal team of spies that investigate corruption within the United States government, finding moles and double-agents in the CIA and even the upper echelons of power.

The story follows Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso) who is given a job answering a telephone in a secret room in the White House. He’s basically the dispatcher for Night Action, but soon he finds himself caught up in a plot that stretches all the way to the Oval Office. He meets Rose (Luciane Buchanan) after he receives a distress call, and from here things go from bad to worse. The duo is faced with double-crosses, intense chases and plenty more as they try to stay alive and figure out who’s pulling the strings.

Season 2 adds a few new layers of complexity to the mix, juggling several subplots filled with intrigue, international espionage and even more dire stakes. Just like the first season, this is a series that isn’t trying to be super sexy or super smart, but carries out its spycraft with workmanlike efficiency. Yes, it’s over-the-top a lot of the time, but its leads are down to earth and relatable and it’s entertaining from the get-go.

If you’re looking for a binge this weekend, and especially if you’re a fan of shows like Slow Horses, Reacher, Killing Eve and Jack Ryan, do yourself a favor and give The Night Agent a shot.

The Wild Robot is probably the best and certainly the most gorgeous animated movie of the year. It’s deeply emotional without ever being overly didactic, and the animation style is so evocative and distinct that I want to touch it and cry. From Lilo & Stitch and How to Train Your Dragon director Chris Sanders, The Wild Robot follows a robot named Roz (voiced by Lupita Nyong’o), who finds herself stranded on a remote island, as she takes care of a young gosling through the seasons.

Beautiful animation is one thing, but The Wild Robot is built on a damn good story. Robots going against their programming and unlikely parent-child-esque relationships are common tropes, but Sanders isn’t afraid to drill down to the emotional core, even if that means not flinching away from sadder moments. His script homes in on Roz and Brightbill’s connection, threading in moments like Roz letting the little gosling help build shelter, even though the tiny branches he carries don’t really assist her current directive, or Brightbill curling up right under Roz’s neck joint when she powers down and he falls asleep. But it also pulls back to show how their blossoming dynamic impacts the rest of the forest. For a story that’s so intrinsically tied to its environment, that’s a necessity.

It’s not long after, however, that she begins to suspect that something sinister is afoot at the agency.

Every Sonic movie has just gotten better, because each Sonic movie adds a new Sonic character to the lineup. This time edgy Shadow the Hedgehog joins the cast, perfectly voiced by the equally awesome Keanu Reeves. He’s got a wonderfully tortured backstory and there’s just something deeply charming about having a four-foot tall hedgehog with red highlights talking about his deep pain and anguish. The rest of the gang — Knuckles, Tails, and Sonic himself — are brilliant as ever. Jim Carrey also pulls off some impressive acting with himself as he plays both Dr. Ivo and Gerald Robotnik. It’s just a delightful time!

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is still a speedrun through the franchise scrapyard. There’s some abbreviated Marvel-style mythology (including, yes, multiple credits scenes), a discount Mission: Impossible break-in sequence that makes an obvious Tom Cruise joke, and all of those third-tier DreamWorks cartoon wisecracks that issue from Sonic himself. James Marsden and Tika Sumpter, as the human guardians of Sonic and company, still have thankless jobs to do, and the way the movie needlessly incorporates additional past human cast members is confusing at best. For that matter, what newcomer Krysten Ritter is doing in this movie seems unclear, even (or especially) to the filmmakers. But director Jeff Fowler, who also made the first two movies, has further streamlined the pacing, and the film flies by in a silly, agreeable blur.

Director Robert Eggers (The Witch) returns with his most ambitious project to date: A remake of F. W. Murnau’s seminal vampire horror film, based unofficially on Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula. Set in 1830’s Wisburg, Germany, Eggers’ film centers on Ellen (Lily-Rose Depp) and Thomas Hutter (Nicholas Hoult), a newly-wed couple who are ensnared in the machinations of Count Orlok (Bill Skarsgård), a reclusive nobleman and vampire who lusts after Ellen.

The key creative pact in any Dracula movie, though, is between the director and his vampire. (E. Elias Merhige playfully explored this topic in his 2000 film Shadow of the Vampire, in which John Malkovich plays a fictionalized Murnau, with Dafoe as a version of Schreck who might actually be a vampire.) This is the one area where Eggers and Skarsgård diverge sharply from the original film. Skarsgård’s Orlok is still ancient, corpse-like, and heavily taloned. But where Schreck was twisted and withered, Skarsgård’s version is towering and hairy, swathed in furs, with a long mustache and a barbaric aspect. Even his looming physicality is dwarfed by his voice; Skarsgård speaks outrageously slowly in a cartoonish Transylvanian accent, rolling his R’s for days, and the sound mix gives his every utterance a booming, subsonic resonance that rattles the theater. It’s a choice; it may be too much for some, but it couldn’t be any more Gothic.

New Shows And Movies To Stream On Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video, Apple TV And More
What to watch this weekend.

We’ve come to the last weekend of January already, though we still have until next Friday before the month is officially over and February kicks off a whole new round of shows and movies for us to watch. Will 2025 go by even faster than 2024?

In any case, as always I’ve searched high and low for all the best new TV shows and movies that have recently made their way to the myriad streaming services we all subscribe to these days. Some of these I’ve seen and written about and you can follow the links to my reviews. Others have just popped up and I haven’t had time to see them yet. There’s always more to watch than there is time in the day! It’s a good problem to have.

What’s New & Notable This Weekend

It’s an action-packed weekend for new TV shows and movies and we’ll start with my personal pick for the week . . . .

The Night Agent – Season 2 (Netflix)

I really enjoyed Season 1 of The Night Agent and while it’s been a couple years since I watched, I dived right into the second season and really enjoyed it also. I’ve seen a lot of readers complain that it’s not as good, and I’m not sure if it’s just my foggy memory or what, but I really liked the second season and felt it had a lot of the same strengths and weaknesses as the first, though now I want to rewatch the first and see if I’m missing something. In any case, if you like a fun spy thriller with few frills and plenty of tension, this is a very bingeable option. Read my Season 2 review here.

Prime Target (Apple TV)

I haven’t started this one yet, but it sounds interesting. Leo Woodall plays handsome young mathematician, Edward Brooks, a man whose obsession with prime numbers leads him down a rabbit hole of danger and deception. It’s getting pretty mixed reviews, unfortunately, with just 42% on Rotten Tomatoes—though audiences are more upbeat, with a 65% “Popcornmeter” score. It looks fun and I’ll check it out this weekend. The first two episodes are available on Apple TV with the third and subsequent episodes landing on Wednesdays.

The Wild Robot (Peacock)

The Wild Robot was one of my favorite movies of 2024 and definitely one of the top animated films of the year (I think Inside Out 2 was better, but only barely). The story follows a robot named Roz (Lupita Nyong’o) stranded on a remote island who takes on a mission to raise a young gosling and survive both the harsh elements and other dangers. It’s genuinely heartwarming with a beautiful core and gorgeous animation. If you enjoy top-tier family movies, you should really give this one a shot.

Blink Twice (Prime Video)

Zoë Kravitz makes her directorial debut with Blink Twice, a film about a group of people invited to the private island of tech billionaire, Slater King (Channing Tatum). The story follows Frida (Naomi Ackie) as the vacation to paradise turns into a trip from hell. Christian Slater, Adria Arjona, Haley Joel Osment, Geena Davis and Kyle MacLachlan make up some of the film’s star-studded cast. I haven’t seen this but the trailer makes it look pretty intense (though said trailer is also pretty spoilery, so maybe don’t watch it if you’re thinking of watching the film).

Star Trek: Section 31 — Paramount+

Star Trek has been such a mess over the past decade or so and it sounds like things aren’t improving with Section 31. The Michelle Yeoh-led streaming movie was meant to be a spinoff series of Star Trek: Discovery but for various reasons that was shelved and the project became a standalone film. Apparently that did not translate well. On Rotten Tomatoes the picture has a 17% critic score and just 25% with audiences. Ouch. It seems Trekkies have it just as bad—okay, maybe worse—than Star Wars fans these days.

Grafted (Shudder)

This caught my eye because I recently watched and reviewed The Substance, a film about a miracle drug that sort of gives you eternal youth but not really. It’s a muddled film that I genuinely disliked (and I remain confused about all the buzz). Grafted takes a similar premise, but with a miracle medical technology that can change your face—though in this dystopian thriller, the reality of the transformation is much more terrifying than its promise. Honestly, this looks better than The Substance to me, but I’m not sure I have the stomach for more body horror anytime soon.

Harlem – Season 3 (Prime Video)

I’ll be honest, I know nothing about Harlem despite it being on its third (and final) season. It sounds a bit like the black version of Sex and the City: “Four ambitious best friends, Camille, Tye, Quinn and Angie, navigate relationships and careers in New York City.” I wasn’t a Sex and the City guy, either, so I’m really operating from a place of ignorance and conjecture here. Forgive me! The show has great reviews from audiences and critics, however, so if this looks up your alley, give it a watch!

Gladiator II (Paramount+)

I thought Gladiator was a solid epic historical drama, but not necessarily a great film. It lacked the emotional resonance of something like Braveheart, though Ridley Scott’s film was entertaining enough. Much of the film’s success rested on the stellar performance of Russell Crowe. Crowe is absent from Gladiator II, as is any sense of realism or originality. I genuinely laughed my way through this abysmal sequel and then went home and penned a scathing review. Now you, too, can witness just how bad this film really is—and no amount of Denzel Washington can save it.

The Brutalist (In Theaters)

Not everything is streaming. There is this magical place called a “movie theater” where people congregate and eat popcorn and oversized pretzels and drink giant cups of soda and you all sit together and watch the movie as a community. It’s awesome! You should try it sometime. I’m debating whether to go to The Brutalist this weekend because while it looks amazing, it’s also 3-and-a-half hours long. However, unlike most really long movies, this one is split into two parts and there’s an intermission! So you get a built-in bathroom break to stretch your legs, maybe head back to concessions, etc. I almost want to go the movie just for this intermission experience, which I don’t think I’ve ever had at a movie—just Broadway shows and other live theater. Adrien Brody is already winning awards for the historical drama. It looks phenomenal.

There are a number of new movies out on Video-On-Demand to rent and buy as well this weekend. A couple highlights: Sonic The Hedgehog 3 and the excellent vampire period piece Nosferatu from Robert Eggers (my review). It’s funny, the first Sonic movie was the last film I saw in theaters before COVID shut everything down. I really liked it but never got around to seeing the sequels.

What’s Streaming Weekly

As always, a number of TV shows continue to air each week—not everyone has adopted the Netflix binge model!—and I list some of those here.

Severance – Season 2 dropped its second episode this weekend. The second season of Apple TV’s phenomenal dystopian sci-fi office drama is off to a great start. You can read my spoiler-free review of the complete season here, or check out my Episode 2 recap here. This is one show that I am literally begging everyone to watch. It’s one of the best out there. New episodes drop Thursday evenings. (Apple).

The Pitt is one of my favorite new series. I just published my review earlier today. It’s a medical drama starring (and produced and partly written by) ER-veteran, Noah Wyle. It takes a 24-style format, with each episode a new hour in one long shift in a Pittsburgh hospital. The show deftly weaves together the stories of a pretty massive cast of doctors, nurses and other medical staff plus all the patients and families that pass through the jampacked emergency room. It’s brilliant, compelling TV and I’m not even a big medical drama fan, though I finally started ER after I ran out of The Pitt episodes. New episodes drop Thursday. (Max)

Traitors – Season 3 continues airing weekly as well and is now the biggest unscripted show going at the moment. It’s like a challenge reality show meets murder mystery dinner. I admit, I’ve never watched it because I don’t like reality TV that much, but it does sound entertaining! (Peacock)

Dexter: Original Sin continues to be a solid offering each week, and one that I happily pop on every Friday when new episodes drop. I had low expectations for a Dexter prequel but everyone does a really great job and the combination of weekly mysteries and a season-long mystery works really well. It’s all very nostalgic, that’s for sure. Here’s my review. (Paramount)

SAS Rogue Heroes – Season 2 – Is one I haven’t yet started and have totally forgotten to include on this list. All the episodes are already out and I’ve heard a lot of good things from readers who keep urging me to watch it—which I will, soon, I’ve just been very busy! The series follows a group of military commandos during WWII that employ…non-traditional means in their fight against the Axis powers. (MGM+)

Robert De Niro Stars in Netflix Thriller Series
Netflix has released the trailer for its new limited series “Zero Day,” which features an ensemble cast of Robert De Niro, Jesse Plemons, Lizzy Caplan, Connie Britton, Joan Allen, Matthew Modine and Angela Bassett. The six-episode procedural thriller hits the streamer on Feb. 20.

According to an official logline, “Zero Day” follows “Robert De Niro as respected former U.S. President George Mullen, who, as head of the Zero Day Commission, is charged with finding the perpetrators of a devastating cyber attack that has caused chaos around the country and thousands of fatalities. As disinformation runs rampant and the personal ambition of power brokers in technology, Wall Street, and government collide, Mullen’s unwavering search for the truth forces him to confront his own dark secrets while risking all he holds dear.”

Additional cast members include Dan Stevens, Bill Camp, Gaby Hoffmann and Clark Gregg.

In the trailer, we watch as current President Mitchell, played by Bassett, first assigns De Niro’s Geroge Mullen to the Zero Day team. “Congress has authorized a special Zero Day commission, hunting down anyone who aided and embedded this horrific attack,” Mitchell says. “You’re just gonna grab people off the streets without warrants?” Mullen asks. She responds “Actually, you are.”

Co-creators and co-showrunners Eric Newman and Noah Oppenheim serve as writers and executive producers for “Zero Day” with Michael S. Schmidt. Lesli Linka Glatter executive produces and directs all six episodes. De Niro and Jonathan Glickman also executive produce.

Robert De Niro is a former president on a mission to save the world in first trailer for epic new Netflix thriller series from Narcos showrunner

The first trailer for Zero Day, starring Robert De Niro, has arrived – and it looks like an epic political thriller.

In the brief clip, which can be viewed below, De Niro plays former U.S. President George Mullen who is tasked by the current U.S. president (Angela Bassett) with finding the perpetrators of a devastating cyber attack that killed over 3,000 people.

It’s far from easy, especially given that the public seems to view him as an enemy – not to mention the fact that another attack could happen at any given moment. “If the public finds out how deep this really is,” Bassett says, “I don’t think we really survive that.”

Per the official synopsis, “As disinformation runs rampant and the personal ambition of power brokers in technology, Wall Street, and government collide, Mullen’s unwavering search for the truth forces him to confront his own dark secrets while risking all he holds dear.”

The series is co-created and co-written by Eric Newman, who served as the showrunner of the Netflix series Narcos and its spin-off Narcos: Mexico. The cast includes Jesse Plemons, Lizzy Caplan, Connie Britton, Joan Allen, Bill Camp, Dan Stevens, McKinley Belcher III, Matthew Modine, Clark Gregg, and Gaby Hoffman. Zero Day also marks De Niro’s second-ever television role as a series regular, with the first being the Argentine limited series Nada, which aired exclusively on Disney Plus.

Harrison Ford and The Fonz Teamed Up In This Underrated Road Trip Comedy on Netflix
It is hard to overstate just how significant “The Fonz” was in American popular culture, as Henry Winkler’s beloved performance on the sitcom Happy Days became so successful that it eclipsed nearly every other character on the series. An issue that many actors who attain fame thanks to a role in an acclaimed television show face is being typecast; Winkler tried to break into the film industry to prove that Fonzie was not the only character that he was capable of playing. Winkler gave a surprisingly earnest performance as a Vietnam War veteran in the underrated road trip dramedy Heroes, which also featured a standout role from Harrison Ford in his first film released after the success of Star Wars.

What Is ‘Heroes’ About?

Set in the aftermath of the Vietnam War, Heroes stars Winkler as the amnesiac veteran Jack Dunne, who is detained at a facility so that his mental health issues can be studied. Jack quickly finds that the doctors aren’t willing to listen to what he has to say about the trauma that he experienced overseas, and decides to break out on a mission to reach Northern California, where he intends to start a worm farm. Along the way, Jack ends up joining forces with Carol Bell (Sally Field), who is skeptical about her impending marriage. However, Jack’s real goal is to find the men from his unit that he served with, and ensure that they have all found a new trajectory in the aftermath of their shared trauma. Ford appears as Ken Boyd, a charismatic stick car driver who immediately agrees to help Jack and Carol identify the other “brothers in arms” that they have lost sight of.

The Gritty, Action-Packed, and Deeply Absurd Vietnam War Movie That Time Passed By

The Burt Lancaster-led movie had the misfortune of coming out the same year as ‘The Deer Hunter.’

The simplistic structure of Heroes allows the film to get deeper within the characters, as the notion of a “road trip adventure” has been a formula that has been used ever since the Golden Age of Hollywood. While the narrative itself may not provide all that many surprises, the opening is quite successful in showing the pressure that is put on Jack. Jack begins to understand that despite the best intentions of the medical professionals that are caring for him, staying in a facility where he is constantly reminded of the pain that was inflicted upon him isn’t going to help him heal. Although he has still not entirely recovered from the trauma of serving in Vietnam, Jack recognizes that finding a new goal will allow him to invest his intentions elsewhere. There was certainly a lot of pressure put on Winkler, as this was his first opportunity to show a more dramatic side of his abilities. Although he would later return to comedy thanks to a string of studio films in the 1980s, Heroes indicated that he has a real talent for more serious subject material; blending comedy and drama, as he does in Heroes, offered a preview of his career best performance in the HBO series Barry.

‘Heroes’ Was a Groundbreaking Depiction of PTSD

Heroes features impressive performances from a cast that recognized the serious nature of the material, but were still able to hit the comedic notes necessary to make the film so broadly appealing. Field’s role is surprisingly well-written, as Carol faces an issue shared by many women of her generation, as they often had to serve as nurturing figures to returning veterans that were deprived of meaningful experiences in their youth. Ford gives an early sign that he was equally talented at comedy as he was at drama, as Ken serves as the film’s greatest scene-stealer. Although his strange interest in racing adds a ton of laughs, it is heartwarming to see how quickly Ken responds to the idea of helping one of his former servicemen.

Heroes was different from many of the other post-Vietnam films that addressed veteran’s issues, as it was willing to paint them in a positive light. Although films like The Deer Hunter and Coming Home were powerful examinations of trauma, Heroes took note of the fact that enough men had served in the war that they deserved to see stories in which they got to become reacclimated to average life. Heroes may not have lit the box office on fire, but it was a charming adventure that was made all the more entertaining thanks to the terrific work from both Winkler and Ford.

Back in Action review – Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx slum in Netflix comedy | Cameron Diaz

The last time we saw Cameron Diaz on screen, it was way back in 2014. The star, who had been such a magnetic force in Being John Malkovich, My Best Friend’s Wedding and There’s Something About Mary, had checked out with a trio of pale production line films that represented what we’d grimly come to expect at that stage of her career. Diaz had once easily moved between dark and light as well as large and small, had smoothed out any of her more interesting edges to become one of the industry’s highest-paid yet most boringly unchallenged stars. That year saw her lost in the juvenile comedies The Other Woman and Sex Tape before being horrendously miscast in a dud remake of Annie and not long after, she chose to retire, perhaps feeling as glum over the quality of her films as those of us stuck watching them.

News of her re-emergence, after a decade of focusing on family and an organic wine brand, came at an opportune time, as the industry still struggles to find newer and younger yet equally luminous movie stars to take over from those that came before. Many from that era have found success on Netflix, from Adam Sandler and Jennifer Lopez to Jessica Alba, and so it seemed like the smoothest way for Diaz to re-engage with her fans, partnering with her Annie co-star Jamie Foxx for a broadly appealing action comedy. It’s an easy way back in, a low-effort comeback vehicle quite literally called Back in Action, but the film is only a half-victory at best. While it might prove that Diaz still possesses that same particular magic, it also shows that she should be far more discerning with how she chooses to share it.

She’s far from alone in thinking that action comedy is the best way, though. Recent star pairings like Chris Evans and Ana de Armas, Emily Blunt and Ryan Gosling, John Cena and Alison Brie, Kaley Cuoco and David Oyelowo, Halle Berry and Mark Wahlberg and then Michelle Monaghan and Mark Wahlberg have all also seen the appeal, even if critics have struggled to agree (only Gosling and Blunt achieved a fresh rating with The Fall Guy). The formula – quip, shoot, kiss, repeat – has become rather exasperating for those of us still awake and paying attention with the choice to coast on the surface pleasures of attractive stars allowing for everything around them to suffer. If only a fraction of the big star salaries had been siphoned off for a script doctor then maybe we could have had some real fun here …

As it stands, the mostly rather rote Back in Action is best seen as just an excuse to watch Diaz act again, and she’s as charming as she always has been, especially alongside Foxx, with whom she shares a comfortable chemistry. They’re playing a couple who give up their exciting lives as spies for the safe predictability of suburbia when they become pregnant. But they get sucked back in when their cover is blown and this time, their kids are coming along for the ride.

Director Seth Gordon is no stranger to middling, lose-lose action comedies, having been involved in the writing of The Lost City while directing both Identity Thief and Baywatch and as in those films, there’s no elegance to how the two genres are clumsily smashed together. Watching a couple and then a family limply banter about screen-time or school pick-up while involved in a car chase or shoot-out isn’t enough to tick both boxes. The majority of the dutifully choreographed action sequences are also soundtracked by discordant, wink-wink love songs, like Etta James’s At Last or Nat King Cole’s L-O-V-E, in such a smug and familiar way that it all starts to feel a little like parody, as if we’re watching Action Comedy Movie. The action here is slightly more serviceable (if never remotely exciting) than the comedy, with a script from the Gordon and Neighbours co-writer Brendan O’Brien that settles for tired family sitcom shtick – lazy, exclamation point-heavy one-liners missing all targets entirely, no matter how hard the two stars might try.

While Diaz and Foxx might acquit themselves without any real shame, their supporting cast aren’t quite as lucky. Andrew Scott comes off lightest, just seeming a tad lost as the underwritten big bad, but Glenn Close, as Diaz’s British mother, and her love interest, played bizarrely by Jamie Demetriou, are not quite as lucky, both going super size with go-for-broke pantomime performances, aiming to steal scenes but leaving us with only secondhand embarrassment.

One hopes this is just what Diaz needed to get warmed up again and her next, a role alongside Keanu Reeves in the dark Hollywood-set comedy Outcome should be more rewarding. Back in Action takes her back in time.
