  • The Night Agent Season 2: What to Expect From Netflix’s Spy Thriller

    Gabriel Basso, The Night Agent

    Christopher Saunders/Netflix

I’m not sure anyone predicted the success of Netflix’s The Night Agent. Once you get past the obvious names on Netflix’s most popular English language shows of all time list — Wednesday, Stranger Things, Bridgerton, Dahmer, The Queen’s GambitShawn Ryan‘s spy thriller pokes its head up, like the oddball in one of Sesame Street‘s “one of these things is not like the others” segments. The Night Agent doesn’t boast a big star, didn’t have a lot of promotion when it premiered, and isn’t based on a super popular franchise (Matthew Quirk’s novel was a New York Times bestseller, but is limited to just one book), yet there it is, sitting at No. 7 on the most-watched English language shows of all time (and No. 12 on all shows), ahead of mammoth hits like Stranger Things Season 3 and Bridgerton Season 2.

Soon, it’s very likely that The Night Agent will occupy two spots on the list. The impending release of The Night Agent Season 2 on Thursday, Jan. 23 will be a big test for the franchise to see if it can avoid the sophomore slump. Though he can’t predict that everyone who watched Season 1 will return for Season 2, Shawn Ryan is confident that those who do tune in will be very pleased with what they see. “I think Season 2 is stronger than Season 1,” he told TV Guide.

    More on The Night Agent:

Season 1 was based on Quirk’s 2019 novel The Night Agent, following FBI agent Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso), whose menial job of answering a classified phone line during graveyard hours in the basement of the White House wasn’t supposed to go anywhere, as he uncovers a government conspiracy with vast geopolitical reaches. But that’s where agent Peter Sutherland’s adventures on the page ended, so Ryan and his staff of writers had the challenge of coming up with a new story for Season 2. Grateful for Quirk’s creation of the The Night Agent‘s two main characters, Sutherland and tech specialist Rose Larkin (Luciane Buchanan), Ryan was able to take that base and put his own spin on it for Season 2.

“I was really interested in changing the perspective of the world, so moving most of the action out of the DMV, as they say — D.C., Maryland, Virginia area — mostly into New York,” Ryan told TV Guide. “There had been some talk early on [asking], do we want to take the show abroad and see Peter’s first mission as a Night Agent? And one thing that we decided was we want to keep it in the U.S., but we wanted to bring the world to us.”

That’s why early on in Season 2 you’ll see Peter in Thailand as he learns the ropes as a full-fledged Night Action agent — and yes, The Night Agent on foreign soil is as cool as you hope it will be — but the majority of Season 2 is spent in New York City. With Peter slinking through the concrete jungle, the vibe is much different from when he was on the run in rural Virginia in Season 1. Think The French Connection or Person of Interest, and you’ll get an idea of how urban grittiness plays a role in the mood of Season 2.

    Arienne Mandi, The Night Agent

    Netflix

While Season 1 was mostly Peter learning about the clandestine government Night Action team, Season 2 is all about what being a Night Agent means. One of Ryan’s main attractions to the book was that Peter was an underdog, and even though Peter was such a success in Season 1 — he saved the president’s life, after all — Ryan was eager to get him back to underdog status by making him a low-level Night Agent who was still learning about this new world he’s in, and the difficult choices that come with his new job.

“One of the things I talked about with the writers was Season 1 was logistically very difficult for Peter, but morally kind of easy,” Ryan explained. “You know, he’s somebody who wants to do the right thing, especially to make up for the things that his father did. And so Season 1, if he knew what the right thing to do was, he would kind of do it, and it was just a very difficult process. One of the things I wanted to do in Season 2 was I wanted things to continue to be logistically difficult for [Peter], but I wanted to make things morally more difficult for him. You know, I worked for a few years with David Mamet on a show called The Unit on CBS, way back in the day, and one of the things that he always talked about was that good drama was never the choice between right and wrong, but good drama was the choice between two wrongs.”

Cozy up to more on winter TV:

The complications Peter faces this season will come courtesy of major storylines involving employees at the Iranian embassy, a cruel dictator leveraging family ambition into a complex story with major global consequences, and powerful and shady characters with no allegiance who pull strings behind the scenes. You’ll meet Noor (Arienne Mandi), an aide at the Iranian embassy who puts herself in danger when she makes a risky decision to try to help her family, and a mystery man (Louis Herthum) whose business of obtaining sensitive information becomes a major part of The Night Agent universe. Additionally, with Diane Farr (Hong Chau) behind bars for her actions in Season 1, Peter has a new handler: the steely Catherine (Amanda Warren), who doesn’t fully trust Peter. But they all support the beating heart of The Night Agent, which is Peter and Rose.

Peter and Rose certainly got romantic throughout Season 1, but by the end of finale, they were on different paths: Rose was headed back to California to continue working on tech, while Peter was following his destiny and boarding a plane to start his life as a Night Agent. But their paths intertwine again in Season 2, and not only are they great partners when it comes to secret service, but they need each other to retain their humanity.

“A guy who’s as morally pure as Peter working a job that’s very difficult to be morally pure… how does that affect him?” Ryan said. “And I think we are able to do a decent job with Rose, essentially saying, don’t lose the Peter that I know while you’re doing this. And so, while Peter is trying to save the world in Season 2, I think in many ways, Rose is trying to save Peter’s soul.”

The Night Agent Season 2 premieres Thursday, Jan. 23 on Netflix.

  • ‘XO Kitty’ Already Dethroned In Netflix’s Top 10 List By A New Show

Well, that didn’t last too long. Despite arriving just four days ago, season 2 of XO Kitty has already been unseated in Netflix’s Top 10 list by the show it originally dethroned. That would be American Primeval, the brutal miniseries that has performed extremely well on Netflix since it was released all the way back on January 9, making it the top-performing new Netflix series of 2025 (I’m not yet sure how it performs against the last couple weeks of Squid Game season 2, but we should know soon).

I would not stress about XO Kitty returning for season 3. It debuted at #1 and is a relatively cheap show to make, something Netflix always likes to see. Netflix also really loves its “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” cinematic universe which now has three films and two seasons of this show. The last To All the Boys movie is supposed to be “final” installment, but who knows how many other series or films it might spawn. I didn’t actually know this, but XO Kitty is the first TV series to be spun out of an original Netflix movie, rather than just more sequels. So yes, I think Netflix will let it live for a while.

As for American Primeval, while it is in fact a miniseries, its creator has been pretty vocal about wanting to do a prequel based on its lead, Taylor Kitsch’s Isaac. Here’s what Peter Berg said about it.

“We’re talking about it right now. Good pick (of an Isaac prequel). That’s the way we’d go if we do it, and I don’t know if we will, but that would be the way we would go.”

He goes on to dismiss that they would do anything other than a prequel, and given how the original American Primeval has performed, I would not be surprised if the prequel was greenlit in short order. This is a surprisingly high viewership series for them.

The rest of the list has Squid Game planted at #3, and I do not believe it has fallen out of the top 5 since its Christmas release as it attempts to catch season 1 and become the most viewed season of a Netflix original series in history. We’ll get a numbers update soon. The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live is still performing well at #5, and I believe it’s the best performing Walking Dead show we’ve ever seen on Netflix. My wife’s favorite show, Younger, is also doing well, now at #6, and there are seven full seasons to watch. It is good actually!

So, we’ll see how long American Primeval can stay on top here this time, but new shows are coming, so it may not have that long. We’ll look for spin-off announcements and then season 3 for XO Kitty soon here, I imagine.

Fans of the hit Netflix show “XO Kitty” were shocked to see it dethroned from the top spot on the streaming platform’s Top 10 list by a new show. Despite its popularity and loyal fan base, it seems that a new contender has stolen the spotlight.

The new show, which has yet to be named, has quickly captured the hearts of viewers with its captivating storyline and compelling characters. While “XO Kitty” may have been the reigning champion for weeks, it seems that its time in the spotlight has come to an end.

Fans of “XO Kitty” are disappointed to see their favorite show fall from the top spot, but are excited to see what the new show has in store. Will it be able to maintain its position at the top of the Top 10 list, or will “XO Kitty” make a comeback and reclaim its throne? Only time will tell.

In the meantime, viewers are encouraged to check out the new show and see what all the buzz is about. Who knows, it may just become the next big hit on Netflix!

  • Is Netflix’s New Cameron Diaz Movie, ‘Back In Action,’ Worth Watching?

Netflix has released a new original movie that has immediately rocketed to #1 on the service. That would be Back in Action, an appropriately named spy thriller that marks the return of Cameron Diaz to acting for the first time since 2014’s Annie, Sex Tape and The Other Woman, the last year she made any film.

Unfortunately, it appears she may have not chosen the right project.

Back in Action has a dismal 24% on Rotten Tomatoes from dozens of critics, quite low even for often low-scoring Netflix original movies. The audience score is…better, a 64%, but in the context of usually-higher audience scores, that’s not amazing. Here’s the synopsis of the movie, which also stars Jamie Foxx:

“Former CIA spies Emily and Matt are pulled back into espionage after their secret identities are exposed.”

It’s a little hard to tell from that description but yes, this is an action-comedy, not just a straight spy thriller. It’s directed by Seth Gordon, who previously did Horrible Bosses, Identity Thief and Baywatch. Unlike Diaz he has been working since those movies (they were all almost a decade ago, or more), doing episodes of shows like The Night Agent, For All Mankind and The Good Doctor.

I was actually surprised to realize that Cameron Diaz has not acted since 2014. She has recently commented on this, and how much she loved being “retired.” From a Graham Norton interview:

“Oh my God, I loved it. It was the best 10 years of my life.” She said she was “just free” to be a wife and mother and have a more private life, and I think we can all respect that. She said she turned down roles until people just stopped asking over the last ten years.

    What changed? Here’s her explanation:

“It’s just a privilege to do this. I thought to myself, if I just like, let this go away, all of this goodwill that I got to build over so much time, the passion that I have for entertaining people and making movies that make people smile and laugh and have a good time… if I don’t engage in that again… then I would be a fool.”

She also has another movie coming up, Apple TV+’s “black comedy” Outcome with Keanu Reeves and Jonah Hill, which will be directed by Hill.

So, Cameron Diaz is back in action for Back in Action, but it may not have been the role she should have picked, judging by the quality of the film.

Follow me on Twitter, YouTube, Bluesky and Instagram.

Pick up my sci-fi novels the Herokiller series and The Earthborn Trilogy.

Netflix has released a new movie starring Cameron Diaz called ‘Back In Action,’ and fans are wondering if it’s worth watching. With Diaz’s return to the screen after a hiatus, many are curious to see if the film lives up to the hype.

The movie follows Diaz as a retired CIA agent who is forced back into action when her former partner goes missing. As she navigates through dangerous situations and faces off against adversaries, viewers are taken on a thrilling ride filled with action and suspense.

But is ‘Back In Action’ worth watching? Reviews have been mixed, with some praising Diaz’s performance and the film’s fast-paced plot, while others criticize the lack of depth in character development and predictable storyline.

Ultimately, whether or not ‘Back In Action’ is worth watching depends on your preference for action-packed thrillers and your admiration for Cameron Diaz. If you’re a fan of Diaz’s previous work and enjoy a good action flick, then ‘Back In Action’ may be worth checking out. But if you’re looking for a more nuanced and thought-provoking film, you may want to skip this one.

  • ‘Reacher’ Fans Need to Watch Netflix’s ‘The Night Agent’ Before Season 2

Netflix is known for churning out one streaming sensation after another, and in 2023, the juggernaut platform released the pulse-pounding action thriller The Night Agent, an adaptation of the Matthew Quirk novel that follows the strong and ambitious FBI agent Peter Sutherland as he becomes swept up in a deadly conspiracy after discovering that there is a mole high up in the American government. Sutherland makes it his mission to hunt down the culprit and protect his country, all the while helping keep an innocent tech CEO safe from the crossfire.

The second season of The Night Agent is slated to make its epic premiere on January 23, 2025, with the exhilarating series being favorably compared to the Prime Video smash hit Reacher and its equally formidable hero, Jack Reacher. Let’s take a closer look at the Netflix knockout and explore why it’s the perfect replacement to binge-watch in between seasons of the fan-favorite Prime Video original series.

‘The Night Agent’ Is Netflix’s Adrenaline-Pumping Action Thriller Hit

Based on the Matthew Quirk novel of the same name, Netflix’s latest streaming sensation, The Night Agent, is an action thriller that focuses on low-ranking FBI agent Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso), who spends his time in the White House basement monitoring the activity of a phone rarely used by the mysterious Night Agent program, only to find his life completely turned upside down when the phone finally rings and kicks off an explosive series of events. The rarely used line serves as an emergency hotline for American spies, and Peter springs into action when the frightened tech CEO Rose Larkin (Luciana Buchanan) begs for help.

Unsurprisingly, audiences couldn’t get enough of The Night Agent‘s many juicy twists and turns, Basso’s commanding performance as the determined and tenacious Sutherland, and its rip-roaring action sequences. Within its first month of release, the stylish and wildly entertaining series racked up 605.62 million total viewing hours, becoming Netflix’s sixth-most-viewed show of all time. The overwhelmingly positive reaction from critics and viewers helped The Night Agent land a buzzed-about second season (and subsequent third), which is set to make its debut on January 23, 2025.

‘The Night Agent’ Captures ‘Reacher’s Electrifying Energy

If there’s one thing viewers can’t get enough of, it’s a heroic lead character with a strong moral compass, admirable thirst for justice, and some serious butt-kicking skills, all of which The Night Agent‘s Peter Sutherland possesses. The determined FBI agent is willing to risk life and limb for his country and will do anything he can to protect Rose against the many nefarious foes gunning for her, making it his mission to expose the truth and catch the traitor who has infiltrated the government. • ‘The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent’ Climbs Netflix’s Streaming Chart

Released in 2022, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent was one of the riskier Hollywood projects to hit theaters after the pandemic wreaked havoc across the industry. The film featured Nicolas Cage and Pedro Pascal in a story that parodied the real-life Face/Off actor and paid homage to his lengthy filmography while poking fun, too. Unfortunately, it proved to be a box office flop, barely making back most of its $30 million budget with a $29 million worldwide box office gross. However, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent turned out to be a great comedy with more than enough to warrant a viewing, and it’s making big waves on streaming this year.

Per Flix Patrol, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent reached the number four spot on Netflix’s Top 10 streaming titles on the platform on Friday. Netflix is known for revitalizing films that otherwise went unnoticed during their theatrical run, and The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is no exception. Moreover, critics and audiences universally loved the Cage-centric comedy, with both camps giving it an 87% Certified Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes upon its theatrical release.

In addition to Cage and Pascal, the cast of The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent includes Sharon Horgan, Ike Barinholtz, Alessandra Mastronardi, Jacob Scipio, Lily Sheen, Neil Patrick Harris, and Tiffany Haddish. The film was directed by Tom Gormican (That Awkward Moment) based on a script from him and frequent collaborator Kevin Etten (Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F), who are teaming up again for the upcoming Anaconda reboot starring Paul Rudd and Jack Black. Check out the official synopsis for The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent:

“Nicolas Cage stars as… Nick Cage in the action-comedy ‘The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent.’ Creatively unfulfilled and facing financial ruin, the fictionalized version of Cage must accept a $1 million offer to attend the birthday of a dangerous superfan (Pedro Pascal). Things take a wildly unexpected turn when Cage is recruited by a CIA operative (Tiffany Haddish) and forced to live up to his own legend, channeling his most iconic and beloved on-screen characters in order to save himself and his loved ones. With a career built for this very moment, the seminal award-winning actor must take on the role of a lifetime: Nick Cage.”

A Hilarious and Heartfelt Action Comedy All About Nicolas Cage

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent could have easily been too meta for its own good. It’s a meta-comedy that often references Nicolas Cage’s past films, especially Face/Off and other beloved classics. The film is filled with Easter eggs, and much of its thematic weight rests on the audience being familiar with Cage’s work. However, it’s hard to argue against how The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent balances being a Cage-fest while managing to be an entertaining action comedy featuring another superstar in the making, Pedro Pascal.

Long-Awaited Sequel to One of Nicolas Cage’s Best Movies Finally Gets Promising Update

‘John Wick 4’ star Bill Skarsgård will join Nicolas Cage in the follow-up.

For most of its runtime, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent feels like an alternate timeline where Cage lost his touch at his late age (not the case in real life if you ask us) and constantly looks back at the peak of his career as a young, successful actor. There is an inherent earnestness to having Cage reflect on his filmography in such a goofy and surreal fashion, as well as reckon with the reality of an aging actor who continues to have a diehard fanbase. At some point, it seems the film would have been radically different if Cage had not signed up for it, but we’re very glad he did.

“The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” Climbs Netflix’s Streaming Chart

However, things take a turn when Cage is recruited by the CIA to help take down a drug cartel. • Nicolas Cage’s Best Comedy Is Blowing Up Netflix’s Top Charts

In 2022, Nicolas Cage played Nicolas Cage in “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent,” a delightful comedy outing that saw the veteran star come across as what /Film’s Jacob Hall described as “often nuanced, generally restrained, and painfully, awkwardly human.” That’s quite an accomplishment for Cage, who has been known for anything but his restraint in the last couple of decades. Even when he starred in the most terrifying horror movie of 2024, “Longlegs,” he played the mysterious and creepy serial killer with an over-the-top relish. I went into that theater wondering if we’d see some kind of uncharacteristic restraint on Cage’s behalf, but after he started scream-singing five minutes into the movie I thought, “Nope!” Not to say his performance was bad, but if you saw him in David Gordon Green’s 2013 effort “Joe,” you might too be hoping for more of the quietly brooding older Nic Cage and less of the gonzo performances he’s become known for.

“The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” certainly gives Cage room to go off the rails in an effort to reclaim some ownership of his perpetually-memed facial expressions and line deliveries. But his performance in the film clearly had enough nuance to make the film more than further off-the-wall Cage nonsense.

Co-written and directed by Tom Gormican, “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” sees Cage play a fictionalized version of himself whose acting career is on the rocks. The divorced actor begrudgingly accepts an offer of $1 million to appear at super-fan Javi Gutiérrez (Pedro Pascal)’s birthday party, only to end up on an odyssey that sees him working for the CIA to try and uncover the truth about Gutiérrez and his alleged arms dealing/kidnapping of a politician’s daughter. Cage embraces his movie role personas to get the job done, making for full-on meta commentary on the actor’s own life and career that also happens to be one of the best comedies of the last few years. Now, the film has hit Netflix and viewers have seemingly taken to its meta stylings, sending the film shooting up the charts just a day after it debuted.

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent takes over Netflix

By the end of its theatrical run, “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” had managed to pull in $29 million worldwide on a $30 million budget. Not exactly a huge financial success, then, but the critics were at least pleased. The film currently enjoys an 87% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 318 reviews. That makes it one of Nic Cage’s highest-rated films of the last five years (and as you might expect, he’s been in a lot of them during that time). Even “Longlegs” isn’t as highly-rated as Tom Gormican’s action comedy.

As such, it’s nice to see a critical success doing well on the Netflix charts, which are so often full of some of the worst streaming dross in the entire streaming sphere. (Kevin Hart’s “Lift” was number one on Netflix this time last year…)

“The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” arrived on Netflix January 16. 2025, and proved to be an immediate hit. At the time of writing, the movie is number four on the U.S. most-watched film charts. According to FlixPatrol, a site that aggregates viewing data from all the major streaming platforms, the film debuted in the fourth spot on January 17, just a day after it hit the service. That bodes well for Nic Cage’s comedy reaching the top of the charts, perhaps before the week is even out.

Can Nic Cage reach number one?

At the time of writing, a French action thriller is number one on Netflix. The Rodolphe Lauga-directed “Ad Vitam” is essentially a French version of “Taken,” which considering the fact that Liam Neeson has been making his own “Taken” rip-offs ever since starring in the original, seems like fair play to me. Unfortunately for Nic Cage and his action comedy, “Ad Vitam” has been number one in the U.S. for a full six days. Not only that, but viewers around the world have also sent it to the top of the charts in various other countries, making this one heck of a challenge for “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” to overcome.

But considering the film debuted at number four just a day after it hit the service, perhaps it will be the thing that finally topples Lauga’s actioner. In order to accomplish such a feat, however, Cage and co. will also have to overcome perhaps an even more powerful enemy in the form of the Minions. “Despicable Me” and “Despicable Me 2” currently occupy the second and third spot on the Netflix U.S. charts respectively, and they’ve been there for some time, too. If “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” can leap these two juggernauts, then, it will be yet another win for one of Cage’s best modern efforts. What’s more, it will be a nice little reminder that Netflix can serve up more than formulaic actioners and movies that would otherwise have been forgotten direct-to-DVD duds — just like when Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi epic “Interstellar” soared on the Netflix charts to kick off the new year.

Nicolas Cage’s Best Comedy Is Blowing Up Netflix’s Top Charts

Nicolas Cage is no stranger to the spotlight, and his latest comedy film is proving to be a hit with audiences on Netflix. The actor’s film, “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent,” has quickly climbed the streaming platform’s charts, garnering rave reviews and generating buzz online.

In the film, Cage plays a fictionalized version of himself, struggling with his career and personal life. When he is offered a hefty sum of money to attend a superfan’s birthday party, Cage finds himself in a whirlwind of events that blur the lines between reality and fiction.

Fans of Cage are praising the film for its hilarious and self-aware humor, as well as the actor’s electrifying performance. With its unique premise and star-studded cast, “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” has quickly become a must-watch for comedy lovers everywhere.

If you’re in need of a good laugh, be sure to check out Nicolas Cage’s latest comedy on Netflix. You won’t be disappointed!

  • Netflix’s teen drama trips over itself

It took XO, Kitty, the Netflix teen drama spun off from the To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before movie trilogy, more than half of its first season to really find its footing. With clunky dialogue and on-the-nose voiceover narration by the titular Kitty (Anna Cathcart), exposition was clearly not the show’s strong suit.

If you need a refresher, we last left Kitty at the end of her first semester at Korean Independent School of Seoul (KISS). She got kicked out and then dumped her longtime boyfriend Dae (Minyeong Choi) because of her feelings for Yuri (Gia Kim), only to have Dae’s best friend Min Ho (Sang Heon Lee) confess his feelings for her on the plane home. There was a lot of drama! The stage had been set for season two. And yet the show’s sophomore outing suffers from the same struggles that plagued its first batch.

“I never imagined Yuri would call her mom and get me back in, but now that I have a second chance, I’m not gonna mess it up,” Kitty narrates in the first 30 seconds of this new season. Much of the show is like this, with the voiceover or dialogue explicitly stating motives and conflicts. It’s like watching the results of the “Netflix mandate” to have characters announce what they’re doing for optimum background watching play out in real time.

Right off the bat, season two resets the clock on a lot of the developments that wrapped up back in 2023. Kitty rejected Min Ho on the plane, so they’re back to “hating” each other. Yuri and her girlfriend Juliana (Regan Aliyah) are together, so Kitty can’t ethically share her feelings. Kitty and Dae are tentatively trying to be friends. And gay BFF Q (Anthony Keyvan) continues to be the voice of reason for everyone.

But the show also introduces several new characters: Praveena (Sasha Bhasin), another possible love interest for Kitty’s bisexual exploration; Stella (Audrey Huynh), a new roommate who sets her sights on Min Ho; Jin (Joshua Lee), one more lackluster romantic partner for Q, who deserves better; and Eunice (Ryu Han-bi), who pairs up with Dae.

With increased screen time for Juliana, that basically makes five new characters, which XO, Kitty is not prepared to juggle along with its original five. Instead of diving into the arcs it already worked to set up, the show wastes time on these fresh, often pointless characters. And because there’s not enough time for everyone, some characters drop off for a few episodes only to pop up randomly later, and many plotlines don’t go anywhere. Unsurprisingly, season two is its strongest when the scenes stick to the original cast, with Kitty’s dynamics with Min Ho and Yuri (ones built upon from last season) being the most interesting. Min Ho’s story in particular is delicately developed, but Yuri’s clearly gets the short shrift in the back half of this season.

XO, Kitty is still a beautiful love letter to Korea, as language, culture, food, and music are all incorporated with care. Kitty’s quest to learn more about her deceased mother and Korean family continues with more moving results. And if you came to the show because of To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, a visit from Peter Kavinsky—the “Covey” nickname originator, which of course gets commented on—might spark some feelings of fondness (although Noah Centineo really cannot pass for 22 anymore).

Season two also hits all the comfortable teen-show notes, with some K-drama DNA sprinkled in: a school dance, a ski weekend where everyone’s secrets come to light, a talent show with high stakes, love triangles galore, a plot for revenge, and so on. The ingredients are there, but the writing is not. And when the finale sets up a potentially more interesting future, it’s hard not to roll your eyes. XO, Kitty asked its audience to fall for that one before.

XO, Kitty season two premieres January 16 on Netflix

Netflix’s latest teen drama series has been garnering mixed reviews from viewers and critics alike. While some have praised the show for its realistic portrayal of teenage life and relationships, others have criticized it for its lackluster writing and formulaic plot.

The series follows a group of high school students as they navigate the ups and downs of adolescence, dealing with issues such as friendship, love, and identity. While the show’s diverse cast and representation of LGBTQ+ characters have been applauded, many viewers have found the storylines to be cliched and predictable.

One major point of contention has been the show’s handling of sensitive topics such as mental health and substance abuse. Critics have accused the series of glamorizing these issues and failing to provide a meaningful exploration of their real-life consequences.

Despite these criticisms, the show has managed to attract a dedicated fan base, with many viewers praising the performances of the young cast and the show’s stylish aesthetic. However, it seems that Netflix’s teen drama may have stumbled in trying to balance entertainment with meaningful storytelling.

As the series continues to unfold, it remains to be seen whether it will be able to overcome its shortcomings and deliver a more compelling narrative. In the meantime, viewers will have to decide for themselves whether this teen drama is worth a watch or if it’s better to switch to another show on the streaming platform.

  • Ahead of Its Return, One of Netflix’s Best Anime Series May Be in Trouble

Netflix’s Castlevania: Nocturne is a thrilling extension of Castlevania, delivering gothic action, dark lore, and gritty characters. As fans eagerly await the return of the beloved series for its second season, a shadow of uncertainty looms over its future. Steve Stark, the supervising background designer for the series, recently took to social media to highlight an uncomfortable truth that the show’s survival hinges on viewer engagement.

Stark’s tweet is both a rallying cry for fans and a sobering reminder of the precarious nature of streaming content. Despite Nocturne’s critical success and loyal fanbase, its fate ultimately rests in the hands of Netflix’s notoriously data-driven approach to renewals.

Viewer Engagement Is Key to Castlevania’s Survival on Netflix

Staff Members Delivers a Call for Action to Fans Who Want More Castlevania in the Future

In his approach, Stark emphasized that the continuation of Castlevania: Nocturne depends on fans tuning in for season two. This plea shows how important viewership metrics are in determining a show’s longevity on Netflix. Even critically acclaimed series are not immune to cancellation if they fail to attract sufficient attention during their initial release window.

  • Christopher Nolan’s Sci-Fi Epic Is Soaring On Netflix’s Charts

Christopher Nolan’s Sci-Fi Epic Is Soaring On Netflix’s Charts

As we enter 2025, the future of the box office looks as uncertain as ever, but if there’s one thing we know for sure it’s that we’re all destined (or doomed, take your pick) to scroll the Netflix interface for years to come. In recent weeks, amid the usual festive fare, the streamer offered up its usual cavalcade of kind of okay “content” that exited our collective cortex as quickly as it entered. Netflixers sent Megan Fox’s sci-fi thriller “Subservience” to the top of the streamer’s charts over the festive period, while the Keira Knightley-led spy thriller series “Black Doves” similarly triumphed in the Netflix rankings.

But Netflix’s 2024 wasn’t entirely defined by slickly-produced yet somehow instantly forgettable films and TV shows. Amid the 10 best Netflix movies of 2024, we had some real standouts, including what proved to be a breakout turn for Aaron Pierre in the excellent “Rebel Ridge” and the affecting family drama of “His Three Daughters.”

Still, 2025 will no doubt see the onslaught of media continue. But as we prepare for the cavalcade of streaming dross to begin anew, the year has at least gotten off to a decent enough start. Streaming audiences have even given us some hope by sending a modern sci-fi classic to the top of the Netflix charts in the form of what might be Christopher Nolan’s best movie: “Interstellar.”

Interstellar rockets to the top of the Netflix charts

In 2024, Christopher Nolan followed up what was already a banner year for him in 2023 with yet more succcess. Having directed the first box office blockbuster to win a Best Picture Oscar in 20 years with “Oppenheimer” the year prior, 2024 saw Nolan re-release his 2014 effort “Interstellar” in theaters, which became a box office hit 10 years after it first debuted. Now, the film has made its way to Netflix, where it has once again found major success.

“Interstellar” hit Netflix January 1, 2024, and despite already being a well-known sci-fi epic that has been part of the cultural conversation for a decade, immediately started to rise up through the most-watched charts. According to FlixPatrol, a site that tracks streaming viewership data across the various platforms, the movie debuted in the U.S. most-watched film charts at number three as of January 2. It remains in the third spot as of January 3, but could very well reach number one over the coming week. To do so, however, it will have to compete with exactly the kind of middling streaming movies that seem designed as anti-Nolan entertainment.

    Interstellar versus the streaming-scape

If we’re taking an optimistic approach, the Netflix success of “Interstellar” at least suggests there’s hope for the streaming sphere in 2025. While the streaming popularity of something like the Michael Fassbender flop “The Snowman” back in 2023 seemed to suggest Netflixers would watch anything, Christopher Nolan continues his mission to prove that audiences are still eager for high-quality cinematic offerings in the streaming age. With that in mind, it will be interesting to see how “Interstellar” fares against the “Die Hard 2”-style Christmas action thriller “Carry-On,” which currently occupies the top spot on the U.S.’ most-watched charts.

The Taron Egerton-starring actioner is exactly the kind of thing that Netflix has become known for. It’s an entertaining watch that overall doesn’t do much to prevent it from being completely buried beneath the hail of “content” to come, ultimately dooming it to the crammed annals of streaming history. It will therefore be interesting to see whether “Interstellar” can topple “Carry-On” or whether the streaming movie remains the king of the charts. Nolan’s sci-fi epic will also have to overcome Ron Howard’s 2015 adventure drama “In the Heart of the Sea,” which is currently in the number two spot stateside.

Meanwhile, Nolan, who will soon bring a Greek epic to the big screen with his upcoming 2026 project “The Odyssey,” likely isn’t too bothered either way about “Interstellar” charting on Netflix. The director is famously fond of physical media, and has spoken widely about the dangers of streaming-only media. Still, it’s impressive to see the movie taking multiple wins 10 years after it first released.

Christopher Nolan’s latest sci-fi epic, “Tenet,” has been dominating Netflix’s charts since its release on the streaming platform. The film, which stars John David Washington and Robert Pattinson, has been praised for its mind-bending plot, stunning visuals, and impressive action sequences.

“Tenet” follows a secret agent who must manipulate the flow of time to prevent World War III. The film’s complex storytelling and intricate time-travel mechanics have captivated audiences, making it a must-watch for sci-fi fans.

Since its debut on Netflix, “Tenet” has climbed to the top of the streaming platform’s charts, proving to be a hit with viewers around the world. With its gripping storyline and impressive special effects, Christopher Nolan’s latest masterpiece is a must-see for anyone looking for a thrilling cinematic experience.

Don’t miss out on the opportunity to watch “Tenet” on Netflix and see why this sci-fi epic is making waves on the streaming charts. Get ready to be blown away by Christopher Nolan’s visionary storytelling and immerse yourself in a world of time-bending action and intrigue.
