    Space agencies are keeping a close eye on a recently discovered asteroid that has a small chance of impacting Earth. Named 2024 YR4, the asteroid has a 1.2% chance of hitting our planet on December 22, 2032, the European Space Agency and NASA have found.

    But that also means the space rock has a nearly 99% chance of safely passing by Earth in 2032, according to the ESA and NASA. Future observations of the asteroid will help scientists determine the likelihood of an impact.

    The asteroid is estimated to be between 131 and 328 feet (40 and 100 meters) wide. Asteroids of this size impact Earth every few thousand years, and they can cause severe damage to local regions, according to the ESA.

    The space rock has a “size range comparable to that of a large building,” said Dr. Paul Chodas, director for the Center for Near Earth Object Studies, or CNEOS, at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. Chodas added that the actual size of the asteroid, which astronomers are trying to determine with follow-up observations using multiple telescopes, is currently highly uncertain.

    “If the asteroid turns out to be on the large end of its estimated size range, the impact could produce blast damage as far as 50 kilometers (31 miles) from the impact site,” Chodas said. “But that’s in the unlikely event that it might impact at all. The potential for damage arises because of the incredibly high speed (about 17 kilometers per second, or 38,028 miles per hour) at which the asteroid would enter the atmosphere.”

    The Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System, or ATLAS, telescope located in Rio Hurtado, Chile, first spied the space rock on December 27. The telescope is one of the asteroid discovery programs funded by NASA to scan the sky in search of near-Earth asteroids, said Davide Farnocchia, navigation engineer at JPL and CNEOS.

    “The discovery happened while the asteroid was in the Earth’s neighborhood, which made it bright enough to be detected,” Farnocchia said.

    Automated asteroid warning systems sent out an alarm after determining the asteroid had a slim chance of impacting Earth in 2032, bumping it to the top of the ESA’s asteroid risk list and NASA’s automated Sentry risk list on December 31. Such lists include any known asteroids with a nonzero probability of colliding with Earth.

    Since early January, astronomers have used the Magdalena Ridge Observatory in New Mexico, the Danish Telescope and the Very Large Telescope in Chile to track the asteroid, which is currently 28 million miles (45 million kilometers) from Earth and moving farther away over time, Farnocchia said. The observations can also help researchers refine their estimates of the asteroid’s size and trajectory.

    As the asteroid moves away from Earth and becomes fainter, researchers will have to rely on larger telescopes to observe it. The celestial object should be visible through early April, and as it continues on its orbit around the sun, it won’t return to Earth’s vicinity until 2028, Farnocchia said.

    If 2024 YR4 disappears from view before space agencies can entirely rule out any chance of impact, the space rock will remain on the risk list until it’s back in view in 2028.

    “Using the available tracking data, we can predict the future position of an asteroid,” Farnocchia said. “The longer we track an asteroid, the more precise the prediction. As we collect additional data, the uncertainty in the position of 2024 YR4 in 2032 will decrease. Given that the impact probability is only 1%, it is 99% likely that the Earth will eventually fall outside the swath of possible positions and that the probability would fall to zero.”

    It’s not uncommon for an asteroid’s impact probability to rise shortly after its discovery before that probability drops to zero after scientists learn more about its size and trajectory, according to the European Space Agency.

    NASA and the ESA regularly track thousands of near-Earth asteroids, but depending on the size, they are not always easy to spot. But improvements in asteroid survey technology, and future asteroid-spotting missions, could detect the space rocks astronomers haven’t been able to see in the past. Currently, there are no other known large asteroids that have more than a 1% chance of impacting Earth, according to NASA.

    Two international asteroid response groups endorsed by the United Nations — the International Asteroid Warning Network, chaired by NASA, and the Space Mission Planning Advisory Group, chaired by ESA — have activated in response to the threat level.

    The International Asteroid Warning Network is responsible for coordinating the organizations involved in tracking and characterizing the details of the asteroid — and if necessary, developing strategies to assess the consequences of an impact.

    Meanwhile, the Space Mission Planning Advisory Group, currently convening in an already-planned meeting in Vienna through next week, will provide recommendations and evaluate options for how to mitigate a potential impact if the asteroid remains a threat. Mitigation tactics include deflecting the asteroid in space or evacuating potentially impacted regions on the ground, Farnocchia said.

    NASA carried out the Double Asteroid Redirection Test, called the DART mission, in September 2022 to assess the effectiveness of asteroid deflection technology. The agency wanted to see whether a kinetic impact — such as intentionally crashing a spacecraft into an asteroid at 13,645 miles per hour (6.1 kilometers per second) — would be enough to change the motion of a celestial object in space.

    The DART spacecraft successfully changed the way a tiny asteroid called Dimorphos moves, shifting the moonlet asteroid’s orbital period — or how long it takes to make a single revolution around a larger space rock called Didymos — by about 32 minutes.

    Neither Dimorphos nor Didymos poses a danger to Earth. Still, the double-asteroid system was a perfect target on which to test deflection technology because Dimorphos’ size is comparable to asteroids that could threaten our planet.

    Now, an ESA mission called Hera is on its way to assess the aftermath of the DART impact to determine whether the collision merely left behind a crater or if the spacecraft’s momentum completely reshaped Dimorphos. Both agencies see the mission as a necessary step to understand the final outcome of DART’s deflection test. Measuring DART’s efficiency is crucial in case a similar strategy may need to be used against an asteroid on a collision course with Earth in the future.

    “If 2024 YR4 remained a threat at the end of the current observing window, mitigation measures might be considered,” Farnocchia said. “But talk of mitigation is premature. The priority right now is to keep observing 2024 YR4 and reduce its positional uncertainties in 2032, since this is likely to rule out the impact.”

    The New York Rangers were the center of attention not long ago while riding one of the coldest streaks in the NHL. During that poor run, the Rangers traded Kaapo Kakko to the Seattle Kraken. In return, the Rangers nabbed defenseman Will Borgen, and they’ve liked what they’ve seen so far.

    To show how much they value Borgen, the Rangers have signed him to a five-year contract extension worth $4.1 million annually. The signing was first reported by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.

    Borgen has only played 17 games with the Rangers, but they wanted to lock him in before only being a rental piece for the 2024-25 season. In 50 total games between the Rangers and Kraken, Borgen has two goals and three assists for five points, and has averaged just under 16:30 minutes of ice time per night.

    Before joining the Kraken ahead of the 2021-22 season, Borgen began his NHL career with the Buffalo Sabres. Over the course of six NHL seasons, Borgen has played in 233 games with 10 goals and 48 assists for 58 total points.

    Borgen has been playing on the Rangers second defensive unit, paired with K’Andre Miller.

    It was a tough couple of months for the Rangers, but they appear to have straightened themselves out with a 10-game point streak and once again just a point out of a wild card spot in the Eastern Conference.

    “They are competitive with the defensive aspect to the game. From a defensive standpoint, we can put out there that close out quick, can defend, have sticks and that’s really their MO. I think that has helped our team.”

    The Rangers acquired Vaakanainen from the Anaheim Ducks in the Jacob Trouba trade while acquiring Borgen from the Seattle Kraken in the Kaapo Kakko trade.

    Vaakanainen and Borgen are playing over 15 minutes per game as Laviolette has put trust in them to serve substantial roles.

    It’s important to note that New York’s defensive game has ascended since these players acclimated into the lineup.

    A recently declassified document shows that in 1969 a CIA operative visited the University of Arizona campus to conduct a “careful review” of a contract between the university and the federal spy agency. 

    The declassified document is labeled by the CIA as “Cable on University of Arizona.” 

    Though the two-page document is heavily redacted, it confirms the university was working closely with the agency, focusing on monitoring student activists with the Brown Berets, a Latino social justice organization, and Students for a Democratic Society

    The document also names the “Latin studies department,” likely a typo of Latin American Studies Department. 

    The CIA notes in the document that it had a “contingency plan” to recommend the university president shutter a particular line of research at the university. The field of research is redacted. The university president at the time was Richard Anderson Harvill, who led the university from 1951 to 1971.

    A UA student and activist with MECHA, a Latino student group founded in the late 1960s that has a presence at dozens of colleges, told Arizona Luminaria that they weren’t surprised to see proof of the CIA’s connection to the university.  

    The student didn’t want to be named because they fear repercussions from the university and law enforcement.

    The student activist said police and the university closely monitor student political groups. 

    “The fact that we’re educated is why they’re afraid,” the student said. “We challenge the status quo of this country’s existence.”

    The revelation about CIA operations on UA campus comes from a larger batch of recently declassified documents, which range from the 1960s to the 1980s and were released in late December on the CIA’s website at the request of U.S. Representatives Joaquin Castro, D-Texas, and Jimmy Gomez, D-Calif.. 

    Axios first reported on the declassified CIA documents related to UA.

    According to a press release issued by the lawmakers, the documents “detail an extensive pattern of CIA surveillance and infiltration directed against students, labor organizers, Chicano civil rights leaders, and advocates for Puerto Rican independence.”

    A secret history

    While it is now illegal for the CIA to conduct domestic operations, for decades the agency surveilled and even experimented on U.S. citizens. That changed in 1981, with an executive order signed by Ronald Reagan, stipulating that the CIA can no longer legally conduct assassinations and is restricted in how it can operate on U.S. soil.

    These disclosures show a pattern of government surveillance against Latino students and activists that was intended to undermine their organizing and crush their nascent political power,” Castro told Arizona Luminaria via email. “The University of Arizona disclosures in particular show that the CIA was putting pressure on university leaders to suppress peaceful free speech on campus and silence the growing voices of Latino students.”

    Latin American history professor Alexander Aviña suspects that the CIA was “concerned with Latino movement collaborating with Black Power movement and AIM,” the American Indian Movement. 

    Aviña teaches at Arizona State University and is the author of “Specters of Revolution,” which covers Mexican revolutionary groups in the 1960s.

    “It’s also about the location of the UA, near the border, that added urgency to surveilling students in Latino studies,” Aviña said.

    Aviña added that while the threats against students from the CIA or other federal and local agencies may be different, university leadership is today increasing its surveillance and suppression of student activism.

    “We’ve seen since last spring American universities close rank and violate free speech rights of their own students to brutally quell the pro-Palestine movements,” Aviña said.  

    After pro-Palestinian protests at UA last spring, campus officials announced rules limiting how students and other activists could protest on campus. 

    UA spokesperson Mitch Zak said in an emailed statement: “The University of Arizona celebrates its status as a federally recognized Hispanic Serving Institution and its Green Light rating from the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE).” 

    “While we cannot address events from over half a century ago, the university today embodies a dynamic and culturally rich environment that fosters an inclusive, supportive, and diverse community,” Zak added. 

    An anti-protest crackdown at ASU is currently being investigated by the Department of Justice for potential civil rights violations. MECHA’s ASU chapter was also suspended last spring after a social media post allegedly calling for violence. The post has since been removed.

    Given the stakes of current polarization and ongoing tension on campuses, Castro is pushing for more clarity and a different approach from Congress. 

    “Every few years, Congress considers legislation to reform or revise the authorities held by U.S. surveillance agencies,” Castro said. “A more complete historical record will also help Congress understand the guardrails needed to protect civil liberties and prevent future overreach.”

    Activists say threats renewed under Trump

    Raul Aguirre, a longtime Tucson activist and former member of MECHA, was a student at UA from 1974 to 1978. 

    “It’s outrageous,” Aguirre said of the CIA’s operations on campus decades ago. “We were cautious during protests and demonstrations, and we’d be joking, ‘Oh watch out or they’ll open a file on you.’ And I guess it was true.”

    Aguirre said that even into the late 1970s as they demonstrated on campus for more Latino inclusion and the establishment of a Chicano Studies department, “We would see people on the roofs taking pictures of us.” He said they guessed they were FBI or CIA, but were never able to confirm. 

    “We were exercising our First Amendment rights. We were demonstrating that the institutions were failing us as students. Why do we have to be labeled as suspicious? Why were we seen as radicals? If you are demonstrating against systemic failures, demonstrating on behalf of your civil rights, demonstrating on behalf of people that need to be in power and are not being represented, why would you monitor them?”

    Aguirre also said that, given Trump coming back into office, activists, particularly Mexican, Mexican American, and Latino, need to be vigilant.

    The current UA MECHA organizer agreed. 

    They said members of their organization always go to protests in pairs or groups. They keep an eye on their surroundings, hide their faces and even change clothes. They added that they’ve frequently suspected they’ve been monitored by undercover law enforcement. 

    “Our generation is focused on both activism and education,” the MECHA organizer said.

    The “rare desert fish” is a “small, moderately chubby fish that feasts on a variety of native food sources and has a unique and distinctly red coloration on the underside when in breeding condition,” the organization says.

    “The new wall and road will push these imperiled fish to the brink of extinction,” Krista Kemppinen, Ph.D., a senior scientist at the Center for Biological Diversity, said in a statement.

    “The Sonora chub’s survival depends on being able to access scarce desert water on both sides of the border, exchange genetic material with nearby populations in Mexico, and bolster its populations with upstream migrations of fish from Sonora after droughts. The new construction makes all that impossible,” she continued.

    “Designating California Gulch as critical habitat is more urgent than ever to minimize other threats, such as by keeping cows out of the Sonora chub’s pools,” Kemppinen said in the statement. “It’s also imperative that carefully designed culverts be added to the new border infrastructure to allow at least some semblance of a natural streamflow and migration. If federal officials are serious about saving this fish, they need to act now.”

    It’s business as usual in Los Angeles now the worst of the wildfires is over and Spider-Noir resumed shooting yesterday. Lead star Nicolas Cage, no stranger to comic book adaptations, has been spotted in costume as Ben Reilly, albeit in his P.I. gear rather than a super-suit. 

    The actor first played this version of Spidey in 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and became an instant fan-favourite. The fact he’s getting to reprise the role in live-action isn’t something we ever expected, though this Spider-Man is Ben, not Peter Parker (we don’t think that makes him a clone; it’s more than likely a result of Sony not wanting to confuse audiences). 

    It’s been a while since we got any updates about Spider-Noir but MGM and Amazon Prime appear to be moving full steam ahead with the streaming series. 

    While it was put into development before Sony Pictures pulled the plug on its villain-led Marvel Universe, should the show prove to be a hit, we’d imagine the studio will begin focusing on Spidey’s many Variants on the big and small screen moving forward. 

    Last year, Cage opened up on what led to him reprising a role he first played in the animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

    “I know that the phone’s going to be ringing off the hook to play serial killers after ‘Longlegs,’” he explained. “And that’s not really what I like to do. I don’t like violence. I don’t want to play people who are hurting people. One of the things that I like about this potential show is that it’s fantasy. It’s not really people beating people up. Monsters are involved.”

    In terms of Spider-Noir plot details, it’s been revealed that the series follows “an ageing and down on his luck private investigator (Cage) in 1930s New York, who is forced to grapple with his past life as the city’s one and only superhero.”

    Oren Uziel (Mortal Kombat) and Steve Lightfoot (The Punisher) are co-showrunners, while Harry Bradbeer is set to direct, and executive produce the first two episodes of the series.

    Cage will be joined in Spider-Noir by Lamorne Morris (as Robbie Robertson), Brendan Gleeson (The Banshees of Inisherin), Abraham Popoola (AtlasThe Rig), Li Jun Li (BabylonSex/Life) and Jack Huston (Boardwalk EmpireBen-Hur).

    Lukas Haas (Inception), Cameron Britton (Mindhunters), Cary Christopher (Days of Our Lives,), Michael Kostroff (Wizard of Lies), Scott MacArthur (El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie), Joe Massingill (Barry), Whitney Rice (Suits), Amanda Schull (12 Monkeys), and Karen Rodriguez (Swarm) round out the supporting cast. 

    Spider-Noir will premiere on the MGM+ linear channel in the U.S. and globally on Prime Video.

The Avalanche announced the signing, and a person with direct knowledge of the contract confirmed its value to The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team did not reveal the monetary figure that was first reported by Sportsnet.ca. The new contract runs though the 2029-30 season, and validates what the Avalanche expected out of Blackwood when acquiring the 28-year-old in a trade with San Jose on Dec. 9. Blackwood has gone 3-1 since.
