• Lakers Must Target Knicks’ Mitchell Robinson after Luka Dončić Trade amid NBA Rumors | News, Scores, Highlights, Stats, and Rumors

Regardless what happens between now and Thursday’s 3 p.m. ET NBA trade deadline, the Los Angeles Lakers already look like the big winners of trade season.

That doesn’t, however, mean their work is complete.

The arrival of Luka Dončić feels like a gift from the basketball gods—and the latest nod to Lakers’ exceptionalism—both for the cannon-ball-sized splash to L.A.’s talent pool and for what it means for the franchise’s post-LeBron James future. The Lakers have long-term clarity now, and it just so happens to come in the form of a 25-year-old prodigy who’s on track to have a career for the ages.

All of that is objectively great. What’s not so great, however, is the Anthony Davis-sized hole on the interior. And that will need addressing sooner than later.

Fortunately, the Lakers seem on top of things. They are “looking for a big man,” per Yahoo Sports’ Kevin O’Connor (h/t Posting and Toasting) and have New York Knicks center Mitchell Robinson on the radar.

He’s not the only one, of course. They’ve had interest in Utah Jazz center Walker Kessler “dating back to the offseason,” per The Athletic’s Jovan Buha, who added they’ve also “long coveted” Indiana Pacers stretch big Myles Turner.

If the Lakers were solely focused on the here and now, it’d be tough to craft a compelling case for Robinson, who’s still working his way back from foot surgery last May, over Kessler and Turner, who are both playing some of the best basketball of their careers.

Yet, despite having 40-year-old LeBron James on the roster, L.A. isn’t laser-locked on the current campaign. The megadeal for Dončić made that abundantly clear. For all of his prodigious talents, he’s an awkward on-court fit with James, since both are primary playmakers who spend the bulk of their time on the ball and don’t do their best work defensively.

The Lakers looked at the bigger picture with the Davis-for-Dončić deal, bringing back a player who can, in the words of general manager Rob Pelinka “lead this franchise for years to come.”

That doesn’t mean L.A. is just punting on this season, but there won’t be the same urgency for instant-competitiveness as there was when this team was following the James-Davis duo. The Lakers can approach the deadline with more than the next few months in mind. That’s why it doesn’t make sense to fork over all the assets needed to nab Kessler, whose availability feels debatable at best, or Turner, who has unrestricted free agency awaiting him after this season.

Without a pressing time crunch, the Lakers can be judicious here and search for potential bargains. That description sure feels like it’ll fit Robinson, a difference-making above-the-rim center when healthy with a de-escalating salary.

Granted, his availability concerns are a real thing. He only eclipsed 60 appearances in one of the past four seasons and made exactly 31 appearances in half of them. He’s only helpful if he’s playing, obviously, and he’s had a hard time playing consistently.

That should be baked into his trade cost, though, and he could be a real value at the proverbial right place. He’s an explosive, powerful lob-finisher who could thrive alongside shot-creators like James and Dončić. Robinson is also an active, intimidating rim protector, which might be even more valuable to have behind James, Dončić and Austin Reaves.

A healthy Robinson would be a clean fit for this roster, both now and moving forward. And while he isn’t healthy at the moment, it sounds like he could be soon.

The Lakers have already pulled off one heist this trade season, and they should see more bargain potential in plucking Robinson out of the clearance section.

The Los Angeles Lakers have been making headlines in the NBA world recently after acquiring superstar point guard Luka Dončić in a blockbuster trade. However, amidst all the excitement surrounding the trade, there are rumors swirling that the Lakers are not done making moves just yet.

One player that the Lakers have been rumored to be targeting is New York Knicks’ rising star, Mitchell Robinson. The young center has been making a name for himself in the league with his impressive shot-blocking abilities and athleticism, and many believe he could be a perfect fit alongside Dončić in the Lakers’ lineup.

Robinson’s defensive prowess and ability to protect the rim would provide a much-needed boost to the Lakers’ defense, which has been a weak point for the team in recent seasons. Pairing him with Dončić would also give the Lakers a formidable inside-outside duo that could wreak havoc on opposing teams.

While the rumors are still just speculation at this point, it’s clear that the Lakers are looking to make a splash in the offseason and improve their roster. Keep an eye on the Lakers as they continue to make moves and potentially target Mitchell Robinson to further bolster their championship aspirations. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Report: Canelo Álvarez, Terence Crawford Agree to Contract for September Boxing Fight | News, Scores, Highlights, Stats, and Rumors

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - SEPTEMBER 14: Canelo Alvarez speaks during a press conference after defeating Edgar Berlanga at T-Mobile Arena on September 14, 2024 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by Omar Vega/Getty Images)

Canelo Álvarez and Terence Crawford have reached a tentative agreement for a September fight, according to The Ring’s Keith Idec.

The two are expected to face off this fall in Las Vegas, with the venue and specific date still up in the air.

Boxing fans have long hoped this matchup would come to fruition. Some of the optimism steadily faded as Canelo selected a series of opponents who could charitably described as lackluster. Since winning a unanimous decision over Gennady Golovkin in September 2022, he has beaten John Ryder, Jermell Charlo, Jaime Munguía and Edgar Berlanga.

But ESPN’s Mike Coppinger first reported on Jan. 18 that negotiations between Álvarez and Crawford’s camps were “in the red zone,” a reference to the 20 yards before the end zone in football. The event is slated for the weekend of Mexican Independence Day to carry on Canelo’s annual tradition of stepping into the ring around the holiday.

    Mike Coppinger @MikeCoppinger

No signed contracts yet, but Canelo Alvarez, boxing’s top star, and Terence Crawford are primed to meet on Mexican Independence Day Weekend in September if all is finalized. And as Crawford said all along, it would take place at 168 pounds with no rehydration clause. pic.twitter.com/Gw0DoA21uH

Per Idec, Álvarez is likely to fight May 3 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas to keep himself sharp, and William Scull is one potential candidate for that slot. Scull is unbeaten with nine knockouts in 23 professional fights, most recently earning a unanimous decision over Vladimir Shishkin in October.

It’s unclear whether Crawford would also schedule a tune-up ahead of a megafight with Canelo, though that seems a strong possibility.

The 37-year-old fought just once in 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024, so a yearlong layoff between his August win over Israil Madrimov and a date with Álvarez wouldn’t be uncommon. For a headliner of this magnitude, he may prefer to avoid having any ring rust.

BREAKING NEWS: Canelo Álvarez and Terence Crawford have reportedly agreed to a contract for a highly-anticipated boxing fight set to take place in September. This clash between two of the sport’s biggest stars is sure to be an epic showdown that fans won’t want to miss.

Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting matchup, including news, scores, highlights, stats, and rumors leading up to the fight. • Live updates: Trump tariffs, executive actions and immigration news

Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau addresses media following the imposition of a raft of tariffs by President Donald Trump against Canada, Mexico and China, in Ottawa, on Saturday.

President Donald Trump told reporters that he plans to speak with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday morning, less than a day before the US’ tariffs on the country are scheduled to go into effect.

Trudeau said Saturday he’d been trying to reach Trump since the inauguration, but his calls have not been returned.

Trump announced over the weekend that tariffs will amount to a significant 25% duty on all imports from Mexico and most goods from Canada, and a 10% tariff on Chinese goods imported into the United States. The three countries soon announced they would take retaliatory measures.

On Sunday evening, Trump also threatened to enact additional tariffs on the European Union — accusing the EU of being “really out of line.”

“They don’t take our cars, they don’t take our farm products. They take almost nothing, and we take everything from them, millions of cars, tremendous amounts of food and farm products,” Trump said.

Fact check: It’s not true that the EU doesn’t buy US farm products. The US government says the EU bought $12.3 billion worth of US agricultural exports in the 2023 fiscal year, making it the fourth-largest export market for US agricultural and related products.

And according to a December 2023 report from the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association, the EU is the second-largest market for US vehicle exports — importing 271,476 US vehicles in 2022, valued at nearly 9 billion euro.

  • Nvidia Stock Investors Just Got Good News From Meta Platforms and Microsoft

China’s DeepSeek recently published a research paper that shocked Wall Street. The startup company claims it spent less than $6 million to train an artificial intelligence (AI) model whose performance matches or nearly matches that of leading U.S. models. Comparatively, OpenAI spent more than $100 million on its GPT-4 model.

Nvidia (NVDA -4.72%) stock declined sharply on the news. Its market value fell nearly $600 billion in a single day, the largest daily loss by any listed company in history. The logic behind the crash is straightforward: If DeepSeek built a good AI model for less money, U.S. companies can use the same training methods to achieve similar efficiencies.

Consequently, investors are worried U.S. companies would spend less than anticipated on Nvidia GPUs, which are usually the most expensive line item in AI infrastructure budgets. But the market may have overreacted. Nvidia shareholders just got good news from Meta Platforms (META -0.18%) and Microsoft (MSFT -1.26%), two of its largest customers.

    Read on to learn more.

Good news from Meta Platforms: CEO Mark Zuckerberg views heavy investments in AI as a strategic advantage

Meta Platforms CFO Susa Li told analysts on the fourth-quarter earnings call that capital expenditures would increase as much as 66% to $65 billion in 2025 to support its generative AI efforts and core business. That represents a material acceleration from the 39% increase in capital expenditures last year.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg also provided context, telling analysts Meta’s ability to spend heavily on AI is going to be a “strategic advantage” over time. He also said more efficient training methods do not necessarily reduce the need for AI chips. Instead, he sees recent breakthroughs as an opportunity to apply more computing power to inference workloads to “generate a higher level of intelligence and a higher quality of service.”

Good news from Microsoft: CEO Satya Nadella says demand will increase exponentially as AI becomes more affordable

Not to be outdone by DeepSeek, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said on the latest earnings call: “We ourselves have been seeing significant efficiency gains in both training and inference for years now. On inference, we have typically seen more than 2x price-performance gain for every hardware generation and more than 10x for every model generation due to software optimizations.”

However, Nadella thinks the consequences will be favorable for Nvidia. “As AI becomes more efficient and accessible, we will see exponentially more demand,” he told analysts on the call. Nadella also posted on X: “Jevons paradox strikes again! As AI gets more efficient and accessible, we will see its use skyrocket.”

A semiconductor overlaid with the American and Chinese flags.

What the Jevons paradox means for Nvidia

In the 1860s, economist William Stanley Jevons argued that the technological advancements that made coal a more efficient energy source paradoxically created more demand for coal. Put differently, Jevons believed the cost reductions arising from the greater price performance of coal were more than offset by the resultant increase in spending.

When applied to Nvidia, the Jevons paradox means more efficient AI training methods will ultimately drive more demand for AI software and services. In turn, the cost savings arising from improved price performance of GPUs may be more than offset by the resultant increase in demand for those AI processors.

Indeed, since DeepSeek published its report, Morgan Stanley analysts have upwardly revised their capital expenditure estimates, such that AI infrastructure spending among the four biggest hyperscalers — Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, and Microsoft — is projected to increase 32% to $317 billion in 2025, up from 28%. And that figure could increase further after Amazon and Alphabet report financial results this week.

Importantly, other Wall Street analysts seem to be thinking along similar lines. Despite the DeepSeek news, Nvidia still has a median target price of $175 per share among the 67 analysts who follow the company. That implies 45% upside from its current share price of $120.

Randi Zuckerberg, a former director of market development and spokeswoman for Facebook and sister to Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg, is a member of The Motley Fool’s board of directors. John Mackey, former CEO of Whole Foods Market, an Amazon subsidiary, is a member of The Motley Fool’s board of directors. Suzanne Frey, an executive at Alphabet, is a member of The Motley Fool’s board of directors. Trevor Jennewine has positions in Amazon and Nvidia. The Motley Fool has positions in and recommends Alphabet, Amazon, Meta Platforms, Microsoft, and Nvidia. The Motley Fool recommends the following options: long January 2026 $395 calls on Microsoft and short January 2026 $405 calls on Microsoft. The Motley Fool has a disclosure policy.

Nvidia stock investors just received some positive news from two tech giants, Meta Platforms and Microsoft. Both companies recently announced partnerships with Nvidia, which is expected to drive growth for the semiconductor company.

Meta Platforms, formerly known as Facebook, revealed that it will be using Nvidia’s chips to power its artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure. This move is significant as Meta Platforms is one of the largest tech companies in the world, and its endorsement of Nvidia’s technology could open up new opportunities for the company.

Additionally, Microsoft also announced that it will be using Nvidia’s chips in its Azure cloud computing platform. This partnership is expected to enhance the performance and capabilities of Microsoft’s cloud services, further solidifying Nvidia’s position in the industry.

Overall, these partnerships signal a vote of confidence in Nvidia’s technology and products, which bodes well for investors. With two major tech companies backing Nvidia, the stock is likely to see increased demand and potential for growth in the future. Investors should keep an eye on these developments as they could have a positive impact on Nvidia’s stock price in the coming months.

  • Jordan Chiles scores perfect 10 in UCLA gymnastics’ comeback win over Michigan State – Daily News

LOS ANGELES — The No. 6 UCLA gymnastics team keyed in on the intensity of floor exercise in the fourth and final rotation of the meet to pull off a comeback win over No. 5 Michigan State on Saturday afternoon.

Chiles was battling illness all week and had a 104-degree fever on Wednesday but still managed to score a perfect 10.0 with her Prince-themed routine that allowed UCLA to edge Michigan State 197.300-197.200.

The 197.300 extends UCLA’s streak of scoring 197 or higher to four meets.

“I’ve done the flu game once before,” Chiles said. “If you take it back to 2017. It’s not fun but I knew in that moment that no matter what, how strong I am and I have people around me that can help me and support me. At the end of the day, we’re going to just keep pushing forward and I knew what my role was.”

Emma Malabuyo finished first on balance beam and UCLA claimed the top four spots in floor exercise to hand Michigan State its first Big Ten loss of the season.

UCLA (6-2 overall, 3-0 Big Ten) was trailing by roughly one point heading into floor — an event that it ranked second nationally in. Emily Lee made her season debut in the event and kicked off the team’s signature “floor party” with a 9.875.

The individual scores steadily climbed after that and each gymnast scored 9.900 or above. Brooklyn Moors and Chae Campbell each hit 9.975, which marked a career-high for Moors, to help boost UCLA to a nation-high 49.800 event score.

“We literally had no words after that,” Moors said. “We put everything we had and more into that last rotation. I think it’s just knowing that the work we’re doing is paying off and we’ll see more tens soon.”

UCLA led early on but fell behind at the midway point of the meet, which was the first gymnastics meet to ever be televised nationally on FOX.

The fourth-ranked vault squad in the nation allowed Michigan State (5-2, 2-1) to take a 98.900-98.500 lead. Three out of six gymnasts recorded a 9.950 on vault for a 49.600 team score — which outdid the Bruins’ 49.350.

Chiles scored a team-best 9.925 on vault but had a major deduction on uneven bars that hurt UCLA’s overall event score. No gymnasts surpassed a 9.850, which resulted in a season-low team score of 49.150.

Chiles recovered from the uncharacteristic performance and an impromptu dismount change on bars to hit a sharp routine on balance beam. She scored a 9.850 in her second competitive appearance of the season in the event.

“One thing about me when I’m sick is I forget how my brain works on bars,” Chiles said. “I just got frustrated and was like, I already forgot to do my pirouette, I forgot to do a while skill so I might as well do a double layout. I just need to get off of bars.”

Ciena Alipio’s score suffered a deduction when she fell on beam before calmly resuming the choreography with a side leg extension. Malabuyo was the next and final competitor on the apparatus, and her experience showed.

The Philippines Olympian danced next to the beam while waiting for her cue to perform, then delivered a 9.925 score to anchor the Bruins and get them to a 49.00 event score.

“Her getting up and nailing that beam routine was critical in resetting the tone,” head coach Janelle McDonald said. “It allowed us to go to floor and compete freely and aggressively. Emma has an incredible energy about her.”

UCLA secured the win on national television and in front of a Pauley Pavilion crowd of 10,681 during its annual alumni meet.

“Everyone really rallied behind us and we could feel that when we were coming from behind,” Campbell said. “It’s always special. We love drama, apparently.”

Chiles, who is known for her grace and precision on the bars, wowed the crowd and judges with her impeccable routine, showcasing her incredible talent and skill. Her perfect score not only secured the win for UCLA but also solidified her status as one of the top gymnasts in the country.

  • Mathys Tel transfer: Bayern Munich forward on his way to England to seal Tottenham move | Football News

Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel has landed in England ahead of a proposed move to Tottenham.

Tel’s agent has posted an image on Instagram of the Bayern Munich teenager aboard a private plane heading for London, and the 19-year-old has landed at Farnborough Airport.

Sky Sports News understands the structure of the deal is still being negotiated between the clubs.

Bayern are understood to prefer a permanent deal or a loan which includes an obligation to buy.

Tel turned down the chance to sign for Tottenham earlier this week after the clubs had agreed a £50m deal.

But in a massive U-turn, Tel has changed his mind after a long conversation with Spurs head coach Ange Postecoglou on how he will be used.

Tel has been in demand this window with Manchester United and Arsenal also showing interest in the France U21 international.

‘Tel has changed his mind – his plane is heading to London!’

    SSN reporter Michael Bridge:

“We say never say never on Deadline Day but Tel has done a U-turn and has said ‘yes’ to Tottenham. Incredible news.

“There are reports there are no obligations or options to buy but what we do know – and there is a picture of Tel and his agent on a plane – the plane looks like it is going to London and not Manchester.

“Huge news. Tel has changed his mind…”

    Remember, Tel rejected Spurs first…

Here’s what Paul Merson said on the Transfer Show on Friday night after Mathys Tel rejected a £50m transfer to Spurs…

“Mathys Tel can’t go to Spurs now. Fans won’t be happy with that. As soon as they’ve heard that he doesn’t want to join, and those three other clubs don’t come in for him and then he ends up at Tottenham, the fans won’t be happy with that.

“I wouldn’t say it’s embarrassing for Spurs. He’s coming from Bayern Munich, he’s not coming from a lesser team. No disrespect to Tottenham, but he’s coming from a huge team. He’s got to get the right move.”

Analysis: Why Tel is in demand

    Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel
    Image:
    Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel

    Sky Sports’ Nick Wright:

Tel has been a peripheral figure for Bayern Munich this season, playing only 344 minutes across their Bundesliga and Champions League campaigns without scoring. But at 19, he remains a thrilling talent with plenty to offer and plenty of room for improvement.

He demonstrated his immense potential last season, contributing nine goals and six assists across the Bundesliga and Champions League, despite mostly featuring as a substitute, and averaging an eye-catching 1.15 goal involvements per 90 minutes.

Context is important, of course. Many of those substitute appearances came at points in games where Bayern were already several goals up. But his talent is not in doubt. It is what convinced Bayern to pay roughly £23m to land him at the age of only 17 in 2022.

Mathys Tel has largely been used as an impact sub at Bayern Munich so far in his career
    Image:
Mathys Tel has largely been used as an impact sub at Bayern Munich so far in his career

Tel is quick, strong in the air and, crucially, an accomplished finisher. His versatility is another asset.

As shown in the graphic above, Tel’s minutes at Bayern have been split across different positions. He has played the highest share of minutes on the left, where he is able to cut in on his right foot. But he is also adept with his left foot and has been used on the right, as a central striker, and even in midfield.

He would have to adapt to new surroundings in the Premier League, of course. Hitting the ground running would be a challenge mid-season. But it is easy to understand the interest, even if he would not come cheaply to any side looking to sign him permanently.

Tottenham have been in the market for attacking reinforcements and it seems like they have found their man in Tel. The young forward is known for his pace, skill, and eye for goal, making him a perfect fit for the North London outfit.

  • Nico Gonzalez: Man City hopeful of completing Deadline Day signing of Porto midfielder | Football News

Manchester City are hopeful of concluding a Deadline Day deal for Porto midfielder Nico Gonzalez.

Talks were understood to be ongoing between the clubs on Monday over the transfer fee.

Sky Sports News previously reported City, who lost 5-1 to Arsenal on Sunday, do not want to meet the midfielder’s £50m release clause.

Gonzalez has been included in the Porto squad to face Rio Ave on Monday night.

Man City have already spent £130m in this transfer window, bringing in Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis.

City have been exploring their options in the market for a new No 6 with former Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz, one of a number of midfielders they have been looking into.

However, Gonzalez could now be on his way to the Etihad Stadium as City look to continue their January spending spree.

The 23-year-old joined Barcelona’s academy in 2013 and made 27 appearances for the club before joining Porto in a deal worth €8.5m in 2023.

One element to negations is the fact Barcelona would be due 40 per cent of any fee received by Porto for the midfielder.

The Portuguese side also have the option to purchase an additional 20 at any point, reducing Barca’s cut on a possible transfer to 20 per cent.

Merson: City panicking badly on Gonzalez

Sky Sports’ Paul Merson on Deadline Day:

“I’ve not seen this lad play so don’t know too much about him. But they need players in midfield. A lot of people say it’s not just Rodri. It is just Rodri.

“Rodri sees danger, Rodri is disciplined, Rodri stays in the centre, he gets forward and sits back and protects the backline as well, and he passes the ball through the line very quickly.

“I like Mateo Kovacic, but he will go over and dribble with the ball and people end up all out of position. He and Bernardo Silva get just ruined in the last 30 minutes at Arsenal.

“If you take away the 30 minutes and first 20, City were very good at Arsenal. It was a good away performance. But that takes away the first 20 minutes when they could have been out of the game, and the last 30 minutes – so it’s not much in between that.

“The issue is that Gonzalez comes in for £50m, as soon as Rodri’s fit, that’s it. I don’t think he plays. Unless you play them together and I don’t think you need to.

“This is the problem with wages and buying players, you forget that by the start of next season, this guy is sitting on the bench with big money. You then look at James McAtee with a brilliant young future and they will have to sell him for the fair play rules. It’s a knock-on effect. If they buy Gonzalez, they must be panicking badly to get into the top four.”

Sky Sports’ Tim Sherwood on Deadline Day:

“You can’t compare the Portuguese league with the Premier League. It’s a risk, especially in January.

“What exactly are City signing Gonzalez for? Unless you’re going to bring in someone who is better than what you’ve got and will beat Real Madrid in a Champions League play-off game, other than that they’ve got nothing else to play for.

“They can’t beat Real Madrid with the midfield they had yesterday. They have to find something different to that. But are they ever going to find someone good enough to do that in this transfer market? Absolutely not.

“Douglas Luiz would be the no-risk one because he knows the Premier League, but it looks like that is not going to get done. When everyone’s fit, Gonzalez isn’t going to play and they will ship him out again.”

Or is it a perfect fit for Man City?

    Porto midfielder Nico Gonzalez

European football expert Kevin Hatchard on Sky Sports News:

“It’s an absolute fit, he could do a really good job for them. Pep Guardiola has been an admirer of him for some time, City have been as well.

“He’s been linked with a move to City since he was a youth player so he’s a really interesting figure who has matured at Porto. He has made some forward steps there and could be a really good player.”

Statman Dave speaking on Sky Sports News:

“He fits in perfectly. He came in through the Barcelona youth academy and is tall. He does remind me a little bit of Rodri, there’s a likeness there in terms of his size and his command of the ball.

“Yes, there’s a lot of work to do with him but you think of getting another body in defensive midfield – City need that right now. We saw how bad their rest defence was against Arsenal. How many times were they caught three-on-two?

“He’s a player that can come in, play football the Guardiola way and evolve. You look at City’s window – two centre-backs, one of the best attackers in Europe in Omar Marmoush and a defensive midfielder.”

‘Negotiations tricky in City’s pursuit of Gonzalez’

Sky Sports News’ Ben Ransom at Man City’s training ground:

“He’s a player Man City really like.

“Midfield has been a problem for City this season in the absence of the injured Rodri, so Gonzalez fits the bill. He’s a player City have scouted extensively.

“Gonzalez’s dad, Fran, who was a player for Deportivo, has worked in City’s academy and City, when Nico was 14 and 16 tried to sign him twice.

“He has now impressed at Porto in the 18 months since his move from Barcelona.

“It’s the move from Barca that actually makes this move tricky because negotiations are revolving over the fee. The player has a £50m release clause and as it stands Porto want that paid in full.

“That’s due in part because Barcelona have a 40 per cent sell-on clause, so that would be quite a chunk on any potential fee.

“There’s also a second element to this deal where Porto can buy half of that fee from Barca for €6m. So, essentially, they can reduce that outlay to €18m IF City pay the full release clause.

“However, City are playing hardball. They don’t want to meet that valuation as things stand.

“This deal is a bit of a wait-and-see. One source has told me that if City do not meet the release clause the deal would be off and that would be their transfer window over.

“But this is transfer deadline day and we know money talks. The two clubs are talking so there could still be some movement.”

Manchester City are reportedly hopeful of completing a Deadline Day signing of Porto midfielder Nico Gonzalez. The 20-year-old Argentine has been on the radar of the Premier League champions for some time now, and it appears that a deal could be in the works.

Gonzalez has impressed with his performances for Porto this season, showcasing his technical ability and composure on the ball. His potential has caught the eye of City’s scouts, who see him as a long-term prospect for the club.

With just hours left in the transfer window, City are working hard to finalize a deal for Gonzalez. The midfielder’s representatives are said to be in talks with the club, and there is optimism that an agreement can be reached before the deadline passes.

If the deal goes through, Gonzalez would provide City with additional depth in midfield and give manager Pep Guardiola more options in the middle of the park. His arrival would be a welcome boost for the team as they look to defend their Premier League title and compete for silverware on multiple fronts.

Stay tuned for more updates on this developing transfer saga as Deadline Day unfolds. City fans will be hoping that Gonzalez arrives at the Etihad Stadium to bolster their squad for the rest of the season.

  • Pentagon removes major media outlets, including NBC News, from dedicated workstations as part of a new ‘rotation program’

WASHINGTON — The Department of Defense announced Friday night that it will institute a new “annual media rotation program” for its in-house press corps, effectively removing several major news outlets, including NBC News, from their Pentagon office spaces in favor of other outlets.

In addition to NBC News, The New York Times, National Public Radio and Politico must vacate their dedicated workspaces. The news organizations learned about the new directive in a memo sent to the press corps without being individually notified, and an accompanying email included a message that read, in part, “no additional information will be provided at this time.”

“For over a half-century, the Pentagon Press Corps has benefited from working out of individual office spaces that provide coveted and open access to some of the Department’s top military and civilian leaders,” read the memo Pentagon spokesperson John Ullyot sent to the Pentagon Press Association.

“In order to broaden access to the limited space of the Correspondents’ Corridor to outlets that have not previously enjoyed the privilege and journalist value of working from physical office space in the Pentagon, beginning February 14, 2025,” Ullyot wrote, there will be “a new Annual Media Rotation Program for those dedicated media spaces.”

In a statement, NBC News said, “We’re disappointed by the decision to deny us access to a broadcasting booth at the Pentagon that we’ve used for many decades. Despite the significant obstacles this presents to our ability to gather and report news in the national public interest, we will continue to report with the same integrity and rigor NBC News always has.”

The move by Pentagon officials comes seven days after the Senate confirmed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth by the narrowest of margins. It followed weeks of coverage about his behavior and treatment of women, including allegations that his alcohol consumption alarmed colleagues and his second wife feared for her safety around him. Hegseth has denied the allegations.

NBC News reported on some of the allegations against Hegseth.

The memo identified the rotating organizations by medium — selecting one each from TV, print, radio and online news to swap in and out. It said the news organizations rotating out had two weeks to vacate their spaces.

The new outlets rotating in are One America News Network — which will take NBC News’s spot — the New York Post, Breitbart News Network and HuffPost.

Three of the new outlets are conservative, while HuffPost leans progressive.

HuffPost does not have a Pentagon correspondent, and the site did not request a space, spokesperson Lizzie Grams said.

“If the Trump administration and Secretary Hegseth are interested in more hard-hitting coverage of their stewardship of the Defense Department from HuffPost, we are ready to deliver,” Grams said.

“This decision interferes with the ability of millions of Americans to directly hear from Pentagon leadership, and with NPR’s public interest mission to serve Americans who turn to our network of local public media stations in all 50 states,” NPR said in a statement. “NPR will continue to report with vigor and integrity on the transformation this Administration has promised to deliver. NPR urges the Pentagon to expand the offices available to press within the building so that all outlets covering the Pentagon receive equal access.”

A One America News spokesperson said in a statement that the news outlet has operated a bureau in Washington since 2013, and it “looks forward to having access to physical office space at the Pentagon and will utilize the accommodations full-time as soon as it’s available.”

NBC News reached out to the other news outlets for comment.

The memo did not include further details about the process of the new “rotation program,” including how officials chose which outlets needed to vacate office space first, how the new outlets were chosen and which are next, and how long an outlet would remain without an office space before it was rotated back into the building.

NBC News has held its dedicated Pentagon workspace for decades, enabling the network to broadcast its journalism throughout the day and within minutes of breaking news. The “booth,” as they are called, is hardwired with technical equipment, phone lines and a camera installed by NBC.

It is unclear whether NBC News will have the technical capability to broadcast from the Pentagon once it clears out its equipment from its workspace.

Ullyot noted that the vacating outlets continue to be members of the Pentagon press corps, meaning, in part, they “will be able to attend and cover briefings and be considered for travel with civilian and military leaders in the Department as they have previously.”

The Pentagon Press Association on Friday evening issued a statement saying, “Our resident press corps has greatly expanded over the years and we have always welcomed new members and will continue to do so.”

“We are, however, greatly troubled by this unprecedented move by DOD to single out highly professional media who have covered the Pentagon for decades, under both Republican and Democratic administrations,” the statement read. “We have asked for a meeting and we will keep everyone informed.”

At her first press briefing this week, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said that President Donald Trump’s administration was “opening up the briefing room to new media voices.” The first people she called on were Mike Allen of Axios — a longtime political journalist at a site considered mainstream — and Matt Boyle of Breitbart, a conservative site.

Leavitt also said her team was working “diligently to restore the press passes of the 440 journalists whose passes were wrongly revoked by the previous administration.”

The Pentagon has recently made the decision to remove major media outlets, including NBC News, from their dedicated workstations as part of a new ‘rotation program’. This move has sparked controversy and raised questions about the Pentagon’s relationship with the media.

According to Pentagon officials, the rotation program aims to provide a more equitable distribution of resources and access to information for all media outlets. This decision comes after years of complaints from smaller media organizations about the dominance of major outlets in the Pentagon press corps.

However, critics argue that this move is a blatant attempt to limit the access and influence of major media outlets, particularly those that are critical of the Pentagon or the current administration. They argue that this could have a chilling effect on the freedom of the press and the public’s right to know.

NBC News, one of the outlets affected by this decision, has expressed disappointment and concern about the Pentagon’s actions. They have vowed to continue reporting on national security and military issues, despite the challenges posed by the rotation program.

As the debate over the Pentagon’s new rotation program continues, it remains to be seen how this decision will impact the relationship between the military and the media, and what implications it may have for the broader landscape of press freedom in the United States.

The Pentagon will begin a new annual rotation program for media that requires several outlets, including NBC News, the New York Times and National Public Radio, to vacate their physical offices to allow for others – like Breitbart News, the New York Post and One America News Network – to get their turn.

The Friday announcement from the Department of Defense, now led by former Fox News host Pete Hegseth, will also remove Politico from its established in-house workspace.

The outgoing news orgs learned about the directive in a wide memo without individual notification or additional explanation, and takes effect in two weeks. The move comes a week after Hegseth was confirmed in the Senate by a narrow margin.

“For over a half-century, the Pentagon Press Corps has benefited from working out of individual office spaces that provide coveted and open access to some of the Department’s top military and civilian leaders,” reads the memo, from Pentagon spokesperson John Ullyot.

NBC News said it was disappointed by the decision “to deny us access to a broadcasting booth at the Pentagon that we’ve used for many decades. Despite the significant obstacles this presents to our ability to gather and report news in the national public interest, we will continue to report with the same integrity and rigor NBC News always has.”

The new outlets rotating in are One America News Network, the New York Post, Breitbart News Network and HuffPost as new organizations that will rotate in and out from the space.

“This move to expel The Times and other independent, fact-based news outlets from the Pentagon’s press spaces is a concerning development,” the NYT wrote in a Saturday statement. “The Department of Defense has the largest discretionary budget in the government, millions of Americans in uniform under its direction and control of a vast arsenal funded by taxpayers. The Times is committed to covering the Pentagon fully and fairly. Steps designed to impede access are clearly not in the public interest.”

The Pentagon recently announced a new rotation program that will see several major media outlets, including NBC News and The New York Times, removed from their offices within the building. This decision has sparked controversy and raised questions about press freedom and access to information.

The rotation program is designed to give different media organizations the opportunity to have a physical presence at the Pentagon, but it also means that some outlets will have to vacate their offices to make room for others. The move has been met with criticism from those who argue that it could limit the ability of journalists to do their jobs effectively and could be seen as a form of censorship.

The Pentagon has defended the decision, stating that the rotation program is intended to promote fairness and diversity in media coverage of the Department of Defense. They have emphasized that all accredited media organizations will still have access to press briefings and other events, regardless of whether they have an office in the building.

As this story continues to unfold, it raises important questions about the relationship between the government and the media, and the role of journalists in holding those in power accountable. It will be interesting to see how this rotation program impacts the coverage of the Pentagon and whether it will have any lasting effects on press freedom.
