Buccaneers safety Jordan Whitehead suffers ‘significant’ injuries in automobile accident, placed on NFI list
Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety Jordan Whitehead reportedly suffered significant injuries during an automobile accident on Saturday, enough where it was warranted for the franchise to place him on the non-football injury list, according to Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times.
“Bucs S Jordan Whitehead was involved in an automobile accident today and suffered injuries significant enough for the team to place him in the Non-football injury list,” Stroud posted on X.
The team confirmed the report later in the afternoon, revealing Whitehead won’t play in the Buccaneers’ regular season finale against the New Orleans Saints in Week 18. Additionally, they’ve signed safety Ryan Neal off their practice squad as a replacement.
“Jordan Whitehead was involved in an auto accident this morning on his way to our practice facility,” Buccaneers Communications posted on X. “Due to injuries sustained in the accident, he will not play in Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints and has been placed on the Reserve/Non-Football Injury (NFI) list. We have signed Ryan Neal from our practice squad to the 53-man roster.”
Whitehead was in the midst of his seventh season in the NFL, and his fifth with the Buccaneers. He was drafted by the franchise out of Pittsburgh during the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft. He spent his first four seasons with Tampa Bay before playing with the New York Jets for two, and he returned to the franchise that gave him his start this past offseason.
All told, Whitehead has played in 105 career games, amassing 557 total tackles, 2.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and 11 interceptions. Throughout the 2024 campaign, Whitehead has made 79 tackles, while adding three pass deflections to his statistics.
At the moment, the Buccaneers are in prime position to make the playoffs and win the NFC South, provided they defeat the lowly Saints in Week 18. Still, New Orleans will make it their mission to spoil the part for Tampa Bay, and try to ruin their dreams of making it to the playoffs.
It remains to be seen how severe the injuries Jordan Whitehead sustained are, and if he’s able to return during the 2024-2025 season. The playoffs are the destination he’s trying to get back for, but at the moment the thoughts and prayers of the football world are with the Buccaneers defender.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety Jordan Whitehead was involved in an automobile accident on Saturday and suffered injuries significant enough that the team is placing him on the non-football injury list, according to the Tampa Bay Times. This report notes that White is overall alright but is not expected to return this season.
Whitehead, 27, is in the middle of his second stint with the Buccaneers. The veteran was initially drafted by the organization in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL Draft out of Pittsburgh. He played four seasons for the franchise and was a part of the club’s Super Bowl LV championship run in 2020. In the spring of 2022, he signed a two-year, $14.5 million deal to join the New York Jets. After playing out that deal, he returned to Tampa Bay last offseason.
Whitehead has appeared in 12 games for the Bucs this season and had just made his return to the field in Week 17 after missing time due to a pectoral injury. Overall, he’s totaled 79 tackles and three pass breakups.
As it pertains to the Buccaneers season finale, the loss of Whitehead further puts the secondary undermanned. The club had already ruled out fellow safety Antoine Winfield Jr and cornerback Jamel Dean for their pivotal Week 18 matchup against the New Orleans Saints.
If Tampa Bay can defeat the Saints on Sunday, they’ll clinch the NFC South division title and punch their ticket to the playoffs.

According to reports, Whitehead suffered injuries in the accident and will be sidelined for an indefinite period of time. The details of the accident are still unclear, but it is a concerning development for the Buccaneers as they prepare for the upcoming season. Whitehead has been a key contributor on the team’s defense and his absence will surely be felt.
We wish Jordan Whitehead a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on the field soon. In the meantime, the Buccaneers will have to rely on their depth at the safety position to fill the void left by Whitehead’s absence.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety Jordan Whitehead has been placed on the team’s Non-Football Injury List after being injured in an automobile accident that took place on Saturday, per the Tampa Bay Times’ Rick Stroud.
While no details are known on the exact nature of the accident, Whitehead is confirmed to be okay overall but his injuries are set to keep him out for “multiple weeks”, per Stroud. That would keep him out of the playoffs and end his season, just one game after he returned to the team after suffering a pectoral injury against the New York Giants in Week 12.

Whitehead was brought back to the team in the 2024 offseason after spending two years with the New York Jets. Injuries have hampered him, dealing with quad injuries and then a pectoral injury against the Giants that kept him out until Week 17’s game against the Panthers. Now, after the accident, he’ll be sidelined once again.
With Whitehead now missing, Tampa Bay’s top three safeties to begin the year — Antoine Winfield Jr., Jordan Whitehead and Christian Izien — will not be playing against the New Orleans Saints. Whitehead will be out for the rest of the season. so if Winfield Jr. can make it back in time for the playoffs, he will operate alongside newly re-acquired safety Mike Edwards.
