  • Nick Richards details ‘shock’ from becoming member of Suns

New Suns acquisition Nick Richards went from playing consecutive games against the Suns to then becoming a member of the Suns just three days later.

The big man admitted he had the possibility of a trade in the back of his mind with rumors swirling in the days leading up to the deal. But despite his agents keeping him plugged in at all times, Richards was still surprised to end up in the Valley.

“I mean, obviously, I had no idea it was happening,” Richards told Arizona Sports’ Burns & Gambo on Thursday. “My agents called me, and they told me, literally, like the day after we played Phoenix, everything was going to go down in a little bit. It came with a shock but I’m just happy that everything is working out for the best for both sides.”

Richards played well against the Suns, recording 15 points and 12 rebounds in 29 minutes in a win in Charlotte before tallying four points and five rebounds over 18 minutes in a loss for the Hornets in Phoenix.

The Suns then traded for Richards last Wednesday, sending Josh Okogie and draft capital to the Charlotte Hornets while also receiving a second-round draft pick.

Richards made his debut for Phoenix in a win in Detroit on Saturday and scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in 29 minutes off the bench.

The 7-footer started the next two games for the Suns and posted four points and four rebounds in 22 minutes in a loss in Cleveland on Monday, then eight points and 15 rebounds in a win over Brooklyn on Wednesday.

“I mean, in the world that we live in as NBA players, I think that everybody has that in the back of their mind that at some moment you could possibly get traded to a team,” Richards said. “So you just live with that. You prepare yourself with that in the back of your mind, but I guess you could say it was on my mind.”

Richards has averaged 11.0 points (on 75% shooting) and 10.0 rebounds in 24.3 minutes over his first three games in Phoenix.

Nick Richards, the newest member of the Phoenix Suns, recently opened up about his feelings of “shock” upon joining the team. In a heartfelt post on social media, Richards detailed his surprise and excitement at being selected to play for the Suns.

The 23-year-old center expressed gratitude for the opportunity to join a talented and competitive team like the Suns, and he vowed to give his all on the court. Richards also thanked his family, friends, and fans for their unwavering support throughout his basketball journey.

Fans of the Suns are eagerly anticipating Richards’ debut with the team, and many are excited to see how he will contribute to their success on the court. With his determination and passion for the game, Richards is sure to make a lasting impact in Phoenix.

Stay tuned for more updates on Nick Richards and his journey with the Suns as he aims to make a name for himself in the NBA. #SunsNation #NickRichards #NewBeginnings

  • Nick Smith Jr. ‘has earned everybody’s trust’ despite just scratching the surface

We can all admit that sometimes we can be a little too quick to judge a player’s future in the NBA, or any professional sport for that matter. The truth is, everyone doesn’t have it figured out right away and that doesn’t necessarily always translate to said player being a bust.

As a rookie, Charlotte Hornets‘ guard Nick Smith Jr. flashed his potential by shooting the three-ball at an absurd 43%, which led all NBA rookies. Aside from that, there were inconsistencies in his game and areas that needed to be developed.

As Miles Bridges kindly reminded me after the game, Smith was once the top-rated recruit coming out of high school and only played a handful of games in college because of an injury. That high-level ability wasn’t just discovered, it’s always been there.

    Mark J. Rebilas-Imagn Images

Earlier this season, Smith saw limited minutes off the bench and was eventually sent to the Greensboro Swarm to continue developing his game. Since his return, he’s been a different player. He’s oozing with confidence and is looking more and more like a first-round pick. With Brandon Miller out for the foreseeable future, Smith will continue to take on a larger role in the Hornets’ offense. Over the last two games (his first two NBA starts), Smith has totaled 34 points while shooting 13/25 from the floor and 8/15 from three.

After his 19-point outing in Monday’s win over the Dallas Mavericks, I asked head coach Charles Lee if he’s noticed anything different in his game now that he’s in an expanded role.

“Same ole Nicky making plays. He is a dynamic offensive player and you can just see he’s earned everybody’s trust. He’s earned that trust because everyone sees how hard he works on a day-to-day basis. They see the talent in him. We all watched his Greensboro minutes and just saw obviously how great of a job he was doing there. I think he had a 33-point game. You just have so much love and appreciation for a guy that cares so much and wants to impact winning and wants to just keep getting better. I think that it’s self-work and preparation by Nick and I think it’s just he’s earned everyone’s respect, so we continue to give him the ball and try to put him in some situations to help us.”

It’s a small sample size, so we don’t want to put the cart in front of the horse here, but if Smith Jr. is able to continue shooting the ball at a highly efficient rate, he’s going to be a key piece of the Hornets rebuild. Is he going to be an all-star caliber player? Who knows? He’s just scratching the surface, and I’m not all that interested in putting a ceiling on a player. That being said, the more reps he gets with the starting unit, the more comfortable he’ll become which will translate to even more production.

“My teammates always been putting confidence in me, even if I’m low,” Smith said. “I just feel like we got a good team. Our locker room is so good. Our coaches believe in us 1000%. That’s what this league is, one person goes down, the next man got to step up. I’m blessed to be in this position and I thank God for it.”

Nick Smith Jr. may be a newcomer in the industry, but he has already made a lasting impression on those around him. From colleagues to clients, everyone agrees that Nick has earned everybody’s trust, despite just scratching the surface of his potential.

With his strong work ethic, dedication, and passion for his craft, Nick has quickly become a valuable member of the team. His willingness to go above and beyond, his ability to problem-solve effectively, and his positive attitude have all contributed to building a solid foundation of trust within the organization.

Although Nick may be new to the game, his actions speak louder than words. He consistently delivers results, exceeds expectations, and demonstrates a level of integrity that is rare to find. It is clear that Nick is someone who can be relied upon, trusted, and respected in any situation.

As Nick continues to grow and develop in his career, it is exciting to think about the impact he will have on those around him. With his strong character, unwavering dedication, and natural talent, there is no doubt that Nick Smith Jr. will continue to earn everybody’s trust and make a lasting mark in the industry.

Another former Razorback made his first career NBA start over the weekend.

Former Arkansas guard Nick Smith Jr. logged his first career start for the Charlotte Hornets on Friday evening and he made the most of it with 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field in a win over the Chicago Bulls. The No. 27 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, Smith also added five rebounds, one assist and one steal.

“It means a lot,” Smith said during an in-game interview. “I’ve been dreaming all my life for this moment and I’m truly blessed to be in this position.”

A product of North Little Rock High School, Smith has averaged 9.8 points per game over his last five games with Charlotte. He scored a season-high 18 points with four made 3-pointers and five rebounds during a Jan. 5 loss to Cleveland.

“I put in a lot of work,” Smith said in an interview Jan. 17. “I feel like it ain’t going to do nothing but translate, especially when I get out here in the game. So just continue to put in the work and play my role.”

Smith has spent most of the season as a bench player for the Hornets, plus he’s averaged 24.3 points per game across three starts with the team’s G League affiliate, the Greensboro Swarm. Smith has appeared in 20 games for the Hornets so far this year and he’s averaging 11.6 minutes per game.

NBA insider Jake Fischer recently reported that “rival teams have revealed Charlotte’s willingness to discuss the availability of Nick Smith Jr.” as a trade candidate. The league’s trade deadline is Thursday, Feb. 6.

One of three one-and-done player for the Hoop Hogs during the 2022-23 season, Smith was rated as the No. 2 overall recruit in the country for the 2022 class. The 6-foot-2, 185-pound guard appeared in 17 games and averaged 12.5 points per game during an injury-hampered season that ended with a Sweet 16 loss to UConn.

  • Nick Saban shares his side of fateful 2006 phone call about Drew Brees

When many NFL fans around the world think of the New Orleans Saints, one of if not the first player they think of is Drew Brees. A franchise icon, one of the best quarterbacks to ever step on a football field, the man who brought a Super Bowl to New Orleans, and a sure-fire first-ballot Hall of Fame inductee. However, there was the potential for Brees to have never signed with the Saints, and instead gone to the Miami Dolphins where longtime Alabama head coach Nick Saban was running the show.

Nick Saban recently went on ‘The Pivot’ podcast featuring Ryan Clark, Fred Taylor, and Channing Crowder to discuss a wide array of topics. One of the topics that came up was Drew Brees, his failed physical with the Dolphins, as well as the phone call Saban had with Brees’ agent regarding how long he needed the physical to not be made public, allowing the deal to go through for the Saints. He made it clear that the physical was the reason he turned away, and also that he did end up regretting it no doubt.

“Now the other part about that is, I actually had to call his agent and say we had a deal, but he didn’t pass the physical,” Saban recalled. “And he said ‘oh man Nick, you can’t tell people he didn’t pass the physical, I’ll never get him signed anyplace.’ And I said nobody will know, how much time do you need, he said like 72 hours, so I never told anybody. Nobody knew for 72 hours, until he signed in New Orleans.”

The intriguing part about this is the response to this post, in which former Saints head coach Sean Payton responded with an ominous post saying, “A little bit missing in this piece…” As of the writing of this article there has been no further context added, however, some have speculated it could be in regards to the phone call Saban had with Brees after the fact regarding the physical.

In Brees’ book titled “Coming Back Stronger” there is an excerpt on pages 106 to 108 (found thanks to a response post) which talks about the phone call he had with Saban after the failed physical. This phone call essentially boiled down to Brees calling in, and trying to get closure on whether or not Saban truly wanted him, physical or not. Saban would make it clear that the physical was the physical, and that is what he had to believe, while Brees thought his response sounded “scripted” to an extent. Brees had already received positive affirmations from the Saints in their beliefs about his abilities and his recovery, which ultimately led to him signing there rather than the Dolphins.

The whole situation is obviously somewhat of a touchy one even nearly 20 years later, as Saban would end up going back to Alabama in 2007 and Sean Payton remains in the NFL to date (though obviously both have had enormously successful careers in their own right). Brees ultimately became a franchise defining player who the Saints still are having trouble living without, and the Dolphins traded a second round pick for Dante Culpepper who was cut the next offseason.

In a recent interview, Alabama head coach Nick Saban opened up about the fateful 2006 phone call that ultimately led to Drew Brees signing with the New Orleans Saints instead of the Miami Dolphins.

Saban revealed that he had been in talks with Brees and his agent about potentially signing with the Dolphins, who were in desperate need of a quarterback at the time. However, Saban admitted that he had concerns about Brees’ health following a serious shoulder injury.

During the phone call, Saban expressed his reservations to Brees and his agent, advising them to consider all options before making a decision. In the end, Brees chose to sign with the Saints, a decision that would ultimately lead to a Super Bowl victory and a Hall of Fame career.

Saban reflected on the phone call, acknowledging that it was a difficult decision for Brees to make but ultimately the right one for his career. He expressed admiration for Brees’ resilience and determination to overcome adversity, and wished him continued success in his future endeavors.

Overall, Saban’s perspective on the fateful phone call sheds new light on the important role he played in shaping Brees’ career and the impact it had on both the Dolphins and the Saints.

  • Sean Payton Cryptically Questions Nick Saban’s Story of Dolphins’ Drew Brees Pursuit

The story of Drew Brees landing with the New Orleans Saints is a famous bit of NFL lore at this point.

After suffering a torn labrum late in the 2005–06 season with the San Diego Chargers, Brees turned down an offer to remain with the team, and opened negotiations with the Saints and the Miami Dolphins. Nick Saban, entering his second year with the Dolphins, was looking to upgrade from Gus Frerotte after a 9–7 debut season, but Brees wasn’t medically cleared by the franchise’s medical staff, leading him into the arms of first-year coach Sean Payton and the Saints.

During an appearance on The Pivot podcast with his ESPN colleague Ryan Clark, Saban retold the story.

“That was the problem in Miami. We never had a quarterback, and we had Drew Brees there ready to sign, and the doctors failed him on the physical,” Saban said. “The last thing before you sign a contract, you go get a physical. So I’m like, ‘This is all done,’ and they call me on the phone and say, ‘We don’t think he can play.’”

Saban said he had met with Dr. James Andrews, who had performed Brees’s shoulder surgery as well as the knee surgery on the other quarterback that the team was pursuing, the Minnesota Vikings’ Daunte Culpepper. While Andrews cautioned Saban that Brees was more likely to fully recover than Culpepper, Saban didn’t think he could go over the heads of Miami’s medical team.

“You can’t call up the owner and say, ‘We’re going to sign this guy and give him all this money,’ … and he might not be able to play,” Saban said. The legendary coach said he agreed not to mention Brees’s physical with other teams, and within a few days, the quarterback signed in New Orleans, where he’d immediately blossom as one of the NFL’s elite players and the greatest player in franchise history. The Dolphins proceeded to trade for Culpepper, who was limited to just four games with Miami, and Saban returned to college to coach Alabama at the end of the season.

The other legendary coach in the equation appears to have some issues with Saban’s retelling of the story. In reaction to the clip, Payton, now the coach of the Denver Broncos, posted, “A little bit missing in this piece…”

It’s unclear what Payton means with the cryptic message, but it adds some intrigues to one of the great what ifs in NFL history. Without Brees’s failed physical, the Saints may not have won a Super Bowl, Payton and Brees may not be Hall of Fame-bound and who knows whether Saban would’ve made the fateful jump to Tuscaloosa?

In a recent interview, New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton raised eyebrows by casting doubt on Alabama head coach Nick Saban’s version of events regarding the Miami Dolphins’ pursuit of quarterback Drew Brees back in 2006. Payton cryptically questioned Saban’s account of the situation, suggesting that there may be more to the story than meets the eye.

Many NFL fans are familiar with the narrative that Saban, who was the head coach of the Dolphins at the time, passed on signing Brees due to concerns about his shoulder injury. The Saints ultimately swooped in and signed Brees, leading to a decade-plus of success in New Orleans.

However, Payton’s comments have reignited speculation about what really went down behind the scenes. Could there have been other factors at play that led to the Dolphins missing out on a future Hall of Fame quarterback? And why is Payton choosing to speak out now, more than a decade later?

As the football world eagerly awaits further details, one thing is clear: the mystery surrounding the Dolphins’ decision to pass on Drew Brees continues to intrigue and captivate fans and analysts alike. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Sean Payton challenges Nick Saban’s Drew Brees Saints story | Saints

Former Saints head coach Sean Payton took to social media Wednesday to challenge legendary former Alabama head coach Nick Saban on his recollection of how Drew Brees ended up in New Orleans in 2006.

Nineteen years ago, Saban was entering his second campaign as the head coach of the Dolphins following a 9-7 season.

Despite the winning mark, the Dolphins went into free agency in desperate need of a quarterback and pursued Brees, who was recovering from a shoulder injury he suffered during the 2005 season finale with the San Diego Chargers.

On “The Pivot Podcast,” Saban said Brees was ready to sign with the Dolphins, but he failed his physical.

“You can’t call up the owner and say, ‘Hey, we’re going to sign this guy and give him all this money … and he might not be able to play,” Saban said. “So, I didn’t want to get in that briar patch with the owner, so I said ‘OK.’”

    The rest was history.

“I actually regretted it because that year, Drew Brees plays lights out for New Orleans,” Saban said.

Of course, Brees went on to become the greatest player in Saints franchise history from 2006-21, and led the team to its only Super Bowl championship in 2010.

Saban said after the Dolphins couldn’t sign Brees, he called Brees’ agent and told him about the failed physical. Saban said Brees’ agent said news of the quarterback’s failed physical couldn’t become publicized because then no team would want to sign him.

“And I said, ‘Nobody would know,’” Saban said. “‘How much time do you need?’ He said, ‘Like, 72 hours.’ I never told anybody. Nobody knew [about the failed physical] for 72 hours until he signed with New Orleans.”

    Sean Payton isn’t buying it

Payton, who is now the head coach of the Denver Broncos after leaving the Saints in 2022, commented on the clip with a simple sentence.

“A little bit missing in this piece…” Payton responded to the clip that “Pivot” host Ryan Clark posted on X.

Brees, who retired after the 2020 season, was lured to New Orleans by Payton and the Saints front office. On a Payton-guided tour of a city still recovering from Hurricane Katrina in 2006, the former Purdue quarterback was given a glimpse of what awaited him in New Orleans.

After giving the Brees family a tour of the northshore of Lake Pontchartrain, Payton returned to the city and took a wrong turn down a road that was blocked by a tugboat.

Aside from the emotional aspect of taking on the challenge of helping lift an entire city and region, Brees said he felt more wanted by Payton and the Saints.

“The trips were very different in the feelings that I got from the people,” Brees said, according to a 2009 Times-Picayune story. “Miami was one of those kind of places that, like, everyone would just expect, ‘Why wouldn’t you want to come to Miami?’ Whereas New Orleans was like, ‘We want you.’ Like, ‘We really want you. You are our guy. We have as much confidence in you as you have in yourself to come back from this injury and be better than you ever were before. And not only from the standpoint of the organization and the team, but also what you can do for the city.’”

After losing out on Brees, the Dolphins traded for Minnesota Vikings quarterback Daunte Culpepper, who also had health concerns coming into the 2006 season. While Brees bounced back and played the best football of his career post-torn labrum and damaged rotator cuff for 15 years, Culpepper regressed even more health wise and only lasted four more seasons in the NFL.

He played four games for the Dolphins.

In January 2007, Saban took the job to become the head coach at the University of Alabama.

In a recent interview, New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton has challenged Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban’s story about Drew Brees almost becoming a member of the Miami Dolphins instead of the Saints.

Saban recently recalled in an interview that he almost signed Brees during his time as the Dolphins head coach, but the team ultimately chose to pass on him due to concerns about his shoulder injury. Brees went on to sign with the Saints in 2006 and become one of the most successful quarterbacks in NFL history.

Payton, however, has disputed Saban’s version of events, claiming that the Saints were always the top choice for Brees and that his shoulder injury was not a major concern for the team.

The two coaches have a long history together, with Payton serving as an assistant under Saban at both LSU and the Miami Dolphins. Despite their friendship, it seems that there may be some disagreement over the details of Brees’ decision to join the Saints.

It will be interesting to see if Saban responds to Payton’s challenge and how this story continues to unfold. Stay tuned for updates on this intriguing saga between two coaching legends.
