  • Taylor Swift Dines Out with Kylie Kelce and Family Night Before the Super Bowl

Taylor Swift is fueling up before a big day of cheering for Travis Kelce and the Chiefs!

The pop superstar, 35, enjoyed a dinner out in New Orleans with friends and family on Saturday, Feb. 8, a day before her boyfriend Kelce and his Kansas City Chiefs are set to take on the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2025 Super Bowl.

Swift and her close friends Danielle and Alana Haim were seen walking into Gianna Restaurant, an Italian spot from famed New Orleans restauranteur Donald Link just west of the French Quarter, for their meal.

The “So High School” singer wore a simple black top with black high-waisted shorts — all set off by her showpiece of the look, a black jacket with a beige, fuzzy collar and sleeves. Swift added a slouchy black purse with gold zippers and chunky, heeled black booties. She complimented the look with soft barrel curls in her blonde hair and a dark, Chiefs-red lip.

Alana, 33, matched Swift in all-black, while Danielle, 35, also opted for black — but with a red, collared coat.

Once inside, fans snapped Swift greeting Kelce’s sister-in-law, Kylie Kelce, at the bar. Kylie, 32, was also videoed talking with Swift’s dad Scott, and the singer’s mom Andrea was seen in other photos.

While Travis, 35, is now in lockdown ahead of the Super Bowl, he was able to enjoy a double date night with Swift, along with Patrick and Brittany Mahomes, the day before. The two couples had a cozy dinner at Lilette on Friday, Feb. 7, where they sat in a small, separate room with a booth at the French restaurant.

There, they dined on grilled hanger steak and Louisiana crab claws, a source told PEOPLE, along with fries. Both Taylor and Travis were “super nice,” and the whole group was very polite to staff as the table was being cleared post-meal, sources said.

Travis and Patrick will next attempt to win a historic third-straight championship when the Super Bowl kicks off at 6:40 p.m. ET on Sunday, Feb. 9.

Last night, Taylor Swift was spotted enjoying a delicious meal with NFL star Travis Kelce and his family at a popular restaurant in Los Angeles. The group seemed to be in high spirits as they chatted and laughed over dinner, just one day before Travis’s big game in the Super Bowl.

Fans were thrilled to see Taylor out and about with the Kelce family, and many took to social media to share their excitement. It’s not every day that two entertainment powerhouses like Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce come together for a casual dinner outing!

As the Super Bowl approaches, it’s clear that both Taylor and Travis are gearing up for an exciting weekend. • Every player on Cavs roster showed up for Max Strus’ charity event last night

CLEVELAND — When Cleveland Cavaliers swingman Max Strus grew up in Chicago, Illinois, he became familiar with an event the Chicago Bears held where players would bowl with groups of fans whose ticket sales to the event would be donated to charities. Strus decided to put his own spin on that here in Cleveland, hosting his Bowl in the Land event on Monday evening.

Through his Max Strus Family Foundation, Strus held his bowling event at Corner Alley downtown. Groups bought their tickets for the event, and down all 12 bowling alley lanes, they got to interact with the Cavs.

That’s because Strus’ teammates showed up in full force. All his Cavaliers teammates were in attendance, splitting up between the groups. From Donovan Mitchell and Darius Garland, Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley, and everyone in between, the Cavs spent the evening at the lanes. Cavs head coach Kenny Atkinson, president of basketball operations Koby Altman and nearly all of Cleveland’s staff made it out for the event.

Having that kind of support—a day after the team played a record-breaking game against the Dallas Mavericks and one day before their highly-anticipated matchup against the Boston Celtics—meant the world to Strus.

“Every player is here; I couldn’t be more appreciative. We had a game yesterday, we play tomorrow, and to have an event tonight was probably not the best scheduling,” Strus said. “But nobody complained, nobody had any worries about it. They’re all here. They’re all here to support and, like I said that just shows you who they are as people. We’re having a great year on the court, but it’s just an honor to be teammates with these guys and to show everybody else who they are as people because they are truly special people.”

The money raised from the event will go towards several Northeast Ohio charities to be named soon. For Strus, giving back to the city he now calls home is the least he said he could do, appreciative of the support Cavs fans have shown all season long.

“The amount of respect we have in the city and the amount the fans show up for us and the support that we have constantly at every game, no matter what time of the day or night—it feels like every game is sold out and they’re always supporting us, so to be able to have that just makes this even more of something I want to do,” he said. “I just want to give that back and be supportive of them because of how much love they’ve shown us.”

With support from his team and fans, Strus is excited to give back. But as his foundation’s name indicates, he couldn’t do it without the support of his family. His parents, brother, sister and close friends made it to Cleveland for the event.

“My family is everything and I treat that not very lightly. My family is just the world,” Strus said. “They flew in here yesterday; they’re driving home. The amount of effort they’ve put in just to support me, it’s really hard to put into words. I’m just so grateful to have them to become the man that I am today.”

    We Follow Through

Want us to continue to follow through on a story? Let us know.

Last night, every player on the Cleveland Cavaliers roster came out to support teammate Max Strus at his charity event. The event, which raised funds for underprivileged youth in the Cleveland community, was a huge success thanks to the overwhelming support from Strus’ teammates.

It was truly heartwarming to see the entire Cavs team come together to give back to those in need. From signing autographs to taking photos with fans, the players went above and beyond to show their support for Strus and his cause.

This display of camaraderie and generosity is a true testament to the strong bond and camaraderie among the Cavs players. It’s moments like these that remind us of the positive impact athletes can have on their communities and the importance of giving back.

Thank you to Max Strus and the entire Cleveland Cavaliers team for showing us what true teamwork and compassion look like. Here’s to many more successful charity events in the future! #CavsGivingBack #TeamworkMakesTheDreamWork

  • Does Gabriel Basso have girlfriend? Love lives of Night Agent cast

One of the stars is married to a huge British actress

With the second season of The Night Agent currently at the number-one spot on Netflix, let’s ditch their beloved characters and take a magnifying glass to their love lives, from long-term girlfriends to single life.

Though some names were missing, The Night Agent returned to Netflix screens last week with more fun centred around Gabriel Basso’s main character Peter Sutherland. This time, he and Rose set out to stop a disastrous chemical attack in New York City.

Though the characters obviously don’t have time for personal lives between dodging bullets and taking down corrupt government officials, the same can not be said of their actors. Here’s what we know about their relationships.

    1. Is Gabriel Basso married?

    Credit: Gabriel Basso

    Credit: Gabriel Basso

The Night Agent’s leading man Gabriel Basso has been in the public eye for a number of years, first making a name for himself in J.J. Abrams’ Super 8. There has been a lot of speculation about him being married or having a girlfriend, but unfortunately, they’re just rumours as Gabriel keeps very hush about his love life. He does however have a daughter, announcing the news in August 2020.

“There’s a new Basso on the planter,” he wrote on Instagram at the time.

It’s not immediately clear who the mother of his daughter is.

    2. Luciane Buchanan is a single pringle

Though there has been speculation that she and Gabriel are into each other, according to WDW, Rose actress Luciane Buchanan is very much single in 2025.

    3. Brittany Snow has dated some major stars

    BRITTANY SNOW

With projects ranging from Pitch Perfect to Hairspray, Brittany Snow is one of the more established names on this list. As such, she’s dated Josh Henderson, Ryan Rottman, William Tell, Tyler Hoechlin, and Andrew Jenks.

Most recently, Brittany was married to professional surfer Tyler Stanaland. They tied the knot in 2020 but sadly separated two years later.

    4. Arienne Mandi enjoys her private life

Arienne Mandi has always kept tight-lipped about her dating life besides being an out and proud pansexual. She was connected to Iranian actress Sepideh Moafi, but neither party confirmed the relationship.

    5. Michael Malarkey has been married the longest

Vampire Diaries actor Michael Malarkey has been married to English actress Nadine Lewington since 2009 and they have two sons born in  2014 and 2019.

Celebrating their anniversary a few years back, he penned on Instagram: “11 years married this month to my ride or die @dinibee; thanks for keeping me around all these years even after all the shit I talk about you in my songs.”

The Night Agent season two is available on Netflix now. For all the latest Netflix news, drops, quizzes and memes like The Holy Church of Netflix on Facebook.

  • Star high school wrestler Bo Bassett will make college choice Tuesday night; Penn State among final 4

Pennsylvania’s most sought-after wrestling recruit since Spencer Lee in 2016 will make his college choice on Tuesday night.

Bishop McCort star wrestler Bo Bassett will announce his selection from among Penn State, Oklahoma State, Iowa and Virginia Tech after the Crushers face either Corry or McGuffey in the quarterfinal round of the PIAA Team Wrestling Championships at the Johnstown-based school.

The Corry-McGuffey match begins at 5 p.m. and that winner faces McCort at 7. Bassett’s announcement will be streamed live on Flowrestling. There is no official starting time but the 8:30-9 p.m. range is likely safe.

Bassett said Monday morning on Flo Radio Live that this is a huge week for him, with his college choice and the likelihood that McCort, ranked No. 2 nationally, will face No. 1-ranked Faith Christian in the PIAA team finals at Altoona Area High School on Saturday.

Bassett, who is 109-0 in his career, is a junior who won a PIAA individual crown last season as a sophomore. McCort was not eligible for PIAA events during Bassett’s freshman season. He’ll be a heavy favorite to win three PIAA titles prior to entering the college ranks. Bassett, who turned 18 in January, will be 19 years and nine months old when he enters college during the fall of 2026.

“The recruiting process has been incredible,” Bassett said on the live Flo show. “I’ve loved every second of it. It’s been more challenging than I thought it would ever be, but it was fun. It was something I’ve worked for my whole life.

“As far as the season, I’ve got a lot of big things coming up, and I want to focus more on training right and kind of be set in stone with where I’m going to go all in on that place, and then go all in on my training as well, rather than having to balance them all.”

Bassett ruled out Rutgers, Michigan and Ohio State with his final four announcement on Monday. He took visits to each of the seven schools and he and his family were in attendance for the Penn State-Iowa match, the Penn State-Rutgers match and a recent Oklahoma State match, among many others.

Bassett has competed at a few lineup spots depending on McCort’s needs during a particular match, but he projects at 149 in college, and perhaps a weight higher.

His view on NIL money was interesting, with him saying that he knows wrestling will never compare to college football in terms of financial offers, but that the offers from his four finalists were similar.

“Obviously, NIL is a piece of it. But I’m more focused on the wrestling,” Bassett said. “I want to achieve all my goals and do this and that, but I can tell you that all the offers have been very comparable. I’m just excited to again get this out there and start working.”

Star high school wrestler Bo Bassett, a standout athlete from Western Pennsylvania, has announced that he will be making his college decision on Tuesday night. The highly sought-after recruit has narrowed down his choices to four schools, with Penn State being among the finalists.

Bassett, who is a two-time state champion and nationally ranked wrestler, is considered one of the top prospects in the country. His decision has generated a lot of buzz within the wrestling community, as many are eager to see where the talented athlete will choose to continue his athletic and academic career.

Penn State, known for its powerhouse wrestling program and track record of producing top-tier athletes, is seen as a strong contender for Bassett’s commitment. However, the other three schools in the running have also made compelling cases for why he should choose them.

Fans and recruiters alike will be tuning in on Tuesday night to see where Bo Bassett will ultimately decide to take his talents. Stay tuned for updates on this exciting announcement!

  • Pistons player misses own bobblehead night due to suspension for flagrant fouls

Detroit Pistons fans were treated to a bobblehead giveaway of big man Isaiah Stewart Friday night.

But they were unable to see Stewart in action because he wasn’t allowed to play.

Stewart was suspended for flagrant fouls assessed throughout the season.

The NBA announced Friday that Stewart would be suspended for the night’s contest after he picked up a sixth flagrant foul point this season.

Stewart picked up a flagrant foul, which prompted an automatic ejection Wednesday after he checked an opponent, Thomas Bryant, when a shot went up.

Bryant had to be held back by his teammates, and Stewart almost immediately walked off the court.

The league announced the suspension, along with a $50,000 fine for Stewart for making “inappropriate and objectionable gestures” after his ejection Wednesday in the Pistons’ 133-119 loss to the Pacers in Indiana

The gestures were likely the apparent finger guns he pointed at the Pistons bench.

The Pistons and Pacers have history with the Malice at the Palace in 2004.

Stewart entered the game with four flagrant foul points, so the call triggered the automatic suspension based on the league’s regular-season protocols.

Despite the suspension, the Pistons still gave out Stewart bobbleheads to 5,000 fans.

The Pistons have been a pleasant surprise this season. Their 23-24 record is good for eighth place in the Eastern Conference, which would put them in the play-in tournament.

Last year, the Pistons lost an NBA record 27 consecutive games, which resulted in the firing of Monty Williams despite him inking the richest deal in coaching history at the time.

The Detroit Pistons were set to honor one of their star players with his own bobblehead night, but unfortunately, he was unable to attend due to a suspension for flagrant fouls.

The player, known for his aggressive style of play on the court, has been no stranger to controversy throughout his career. However, his recent string of flagrant fouls ultimately led to a suspension that coincided with the night dedicated to celebrating his contributions to the team.

Fans were disappointed to hear the news, as they were looking forward to receiving a bobblehead in the likeness of their beloved player. Despite the setback, the Pistons organization made the most of the situation by offering fans a voucher to redeem their bobbleheads at a later date.

While the player’s absence was certainly felt on his special night, it served as a reminder of the importance of playing the game with respect and sportsmanship. Hopefully, this suspension will serve as a learning experience for the player and he will return to the court with a renewed sense of responsibility.

  • Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs taken from prison to hospital late at night

Sean “Diddy” Combs, who is awaiting his sex trafficking trial behind bars, was taken from a Brooklyn prison to a nearby hospital late Thursday night, Page Six can confirm.

A law enforcement source first told The Post that the embattled music mogul, 55, was transported from the Metropolitan Detention Center to the Brooklyn Hospital Center at around 10 p.m.

An insider exclusively tells Page Six that transport was made after dark in order to be inconspicuous, as they did not want to attract attention from other inmates or prison staffers.

Multiple sources confirmed to The Post and Page Six that Combs went to get an MRI, which is a non-invasive medical imaging test that produces detailed images of almost every internal structure in the human body, including the organs, bones, muscles and blood vessels.

A source says the “Last Night” rapper’s knee was bothering him and so he went to get it checked out.

We’re told Combs did not stay overnight at the hospital and was back at his cell within a few hours.

A separate source speculated to The Post that the musician had been involved in a prison fight or had some other emergency, but we’re told that was not the case.

Reps and attorneys for Combs did not immediately return Page Six’s request for comment.

A Bureau of Prisons spokesperson, meanwhile, told The Post, “For privacy, safety, and security reasons we do not comment on the conditions of confinement for anyone in our custody to include medical status or medical trips.”

Combs has had a long history of knee problems. In 2020, he underwent his fourth surgery in two years.

The “Bad Boy for Life” rapper admitted via his Instagram Stories at the time that he was very accident-prone, saying, “I’m clumsy. I trip. I fall. I fall in holes.

“It’s always been like that. This is my fourth surgery in two years. I’ve had two rotator cuffs, a knee replacement, and now it’s on quad.”

He concluded at the time, “At the end of the day, this is God’s work to slow me down.”

Five years later, Combs is facing a slew of sexual assault lawsuits and serious jail time for multiple charges, including federal sex trafficking, racketeering and transportation to engage in prostitution.

He has pleaded not guilty and denied any wrongdoing, but will have to wait until his trial begins on May 5 before he is able to fight to be a free man again.

The Bad Boy Records founder has been denied bail three times and there have been reports that his prison stint is starting to take a toll on his body.

A reporter for Law and Crime claimed after a hearing last December that Combs appeared “astonishingly thinner” and grayer than when he was first taken into custody three months prior.

However, a source told Page Six at the time that the former “Making the Band” producer was “fit, healthy and fully focused on his defense.”

“He has been very active, remains in good spirits, and, as always, he was happy to see his children,” the insider added. We were also told that Combs works out regularly.

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs rushed from prison to hospital in the dead of night

In a shocking turn of events, music mogul Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs was taken from prison to a hospital late at night. The details surrounding his sudden hospitalization remain unclear, but sources close to the situation have revealed that it was a serious medical emergency.

Fans and followers of the hip-hop icon have been left in a state of shock and confusion as they await further updates on his condition. Many have taken to social media to express their concern and well wishes for Diddy, hoping for a speedy recovery.

  • Sean ‘Diddy’ moved to hospital for late night MRI

Sean “Diddy” Combs was taken to the hospital from a federal lockup in Brooklyn under cover of darkness last week, The Post can reveal.

Sources confirmed that he was transported to a nearby hospital about 10 p.m. Thursday to undergo an MRI.

The 55-year-old rap kingpin, who is awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges, was taken from the notorious Metropolitan Detention Center to Brooklyn Hospital for the noninvasive test, a source told Page Six.

The medical scan was authorized because his “knee was bothering him,” citing the rapper’s long history of knee issues after he ran the New York marathon, the source said.

The insider added that the hospital visit was done late at night in order to avoid whispers and further speculation from other inmates or prison staffers.

Combs did not stay overnight and was taken back to his cell after the MRI concluded, the source said.

A Bureau of Prisons spokesperson told The Post, “For privacy, safety, and security reasons we do not comment on the conditions of confinement for anyone in our custody to include medical status or medical trips.”

Law enforcement source said they were given a heads up about what occurred “just in case it was leaked and they would have chaos.”

Reps and attorneys for Combs could not immediately be reached for comment.

The music mogul has been held at MDC since he was denied bail on Dec. 3 and is awaiting trial on sex trafficking, racketeering and prostitution charges.

Combs was accused of abusing several women and leading Bad Boy Records as a “criminal enterprise” for more than a decade.

Combs forced his lovers into the “Freak-Offs,” days-long sexual “performances” where the women had sex with male escorts while he watched and masturbated, according to court papers.

He would secretly film the encounters to use as leverage against his alleged victims, the feds claim.

Combs has denied all wrongdoing. His trial is scheduled to begin on May 5.

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs was rushed to the hospital late last night for an emergency MRI. The music mogul and entrepreneur was reportedly experiencing severe back pain, leading to concerns about his health.

Fans and supporters are sending well wishes and positive thoughts to Diddy as he undergoes medical tests and treatment. Updates on his condition are expected to be released soon.

Let’s all keep Diddy in our thoughts and hope for a speedy recovery. Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available. #GetWellSoonDiddy

The Sixers were once again without the services of Joel Embiid, Paul George, Caleb Martin, Jared McCain, KJ Martin and Andre Drummond. The Nuggets were looking to get back in the win column after their first three-game losing skid of the season.

The Sixers had a familiar face ring the bell for tonight’s game.

The first quarter of this one was a thrilling back and forth affair. The Nuggets got out to an early eight-point lead, but the Sixers quickly surged back to take the lead behind a 13-4 run courtesy of five points apiece from Guerschon Yabusele and Tyrese Maxey that was capped off by a Justin Edwards three. Maxey put in 13 first-quarter points to go along with eight from Yabusele to lead the Sixers. A buzzer-beater heave from Julian Strawther would give the Nuggets a 38-36 advantage after one despite the Sixers hitting 8-of-12 from beyond the three-point arc.

The second quarter was a lot of the same and would continue the high-octane contest. The Nuggets’ bench would continue to be a thorn in the Sixers’ side as Christian Braun and Julian Strawther would combine for 23 first-half points. Nikola Jokic did Nikola Jokic things and would head to the half with 13 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds. The Sixers were able to stay attached throughout the second quarter due in large part to Yabusele who would add 10 more points to his first quarter total for a grand total of 18 at intermission. Kelly Oubre had a big quarter to go alongside Yabusele to carry the Sixers offense with 18 points of his own.

The undermanned Sixers, like they have often this season, struggled defensively to match up with the Nuggets personnel and surrendered 73 first half points. The Sixers trailed 73-69 at the half.

The offensive explosion continued in the third quarter. The Sixers were carried by 16 third-quarter points from Maxey who continued to wow with his elite shot-making and touch. Yabusele continued to cook in his matchup vs. Jokic as he put in another 10 points in the quarter to give him a total of 28 and a new career high. The Sixers struggled to contain Jamal Murray who began to heat up throughout the period to lead the Nuggets with 27 points after three. A Ricky Council IV buzzer-beater three over Jokic pulled the Sixers within three at the close of the quarter. The Sixers trailed 103-100.

Despite a herculean performance from Maxey and a career night from Yabusele the Sixers couldn’t get enough stops on Jokic down the stretch to pull out a victory. The Nuggets would snap their three-game losing streak with a 137-134 victory.

    Time for the Bell Ringer.

Tyrese Maxey: 42 points, 9 assists, 15-of-26 from the field, 6-of-11 from three

In a month of monster performances from Maxey this one may have been his best. From start to finish Maxey was in attack mode. The early season shooting and finishing struggles are far in the rearview now for Maxey. Whether it was getting to his patented step back three, showcasing fantastic touch and skill in the midrange with short jumpers and floaters, or blowing by defenders in a blur to the rim for a high array of difficult finishes, Maxey seemingly got whatever he wanted.

Coming off being one of the most egregious All-Star snubs in recent memory Maxey continued to show regardless of what the fans, media, or coaches vote he is indeed an All-Star caliber player and one of the best scorers in this league. In a season that’s been filled with drama and adversity the Sixers’ 24-year-old guard continues to be a shining light and bring hope to a franchise that desperately needs it. Maxey would finish the game with 42 points — 12 of Maxey’s points came in the fourth quarter as himself and Jokic traded baskets down the stretch. The Sixers will surely regret Maxey not getting a touch on either of the team’s final two possessions.

Guerschon Yabusele: 28 points, 7 rebounds, 3 steals, 12-of-17 from the field, 4-of-7 from three

Yabusele continues to show the Sixers that he is someone that they should not be looking to trade and rather somebody that they should be maneuvering in order to keep around long term. Yabusele, one of the best stories in all of basketball this year with his return to the NBA, poured in hyper-efficient career-high 28 points. Yabusele often defended by Nikola Jokic in this one made Jokic pay for his reluctance to leave the paint defensively and when he did Yabusele punished him with drives to the hoop for finishes at the rim. Yabusele, like he often has this season, got the Wells Fargo Center on its feet throughout with plays above the rim, throwing down thunderous dunks. Yabusele also continued to be the glue guy that he’s been all season by digging out loose balls, fighting on the offensive glass, playing with max effort defensively, and doing whatever it takes to try and help this Sixers team win.

Two great performances to pick from tonight. Let us know who you got.

The Philadelphia 76ers faced off against the Denver Nuggets in a thrilling matchup last night, but ultimately fell short in a close game. Despite the loss, there were some standout performances from individual players on the Sixers’ side.

The Sixers’ bell ringer for the night was rookie guard Tyrese Maxey, who put on a virtuoso performance with a career-high 31 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists. Maxey showcased his scoring ability and playmaking skills, proving to be a bright spot for the team in the absence of key players.

Additionally, Guerschon Yabusele had a career night off the bench, contributing 20 points and 8 rebounds in a solid showing. Yabusele’s energy and scoring punch provided a much-needed spark for the Sixers, but it wasn’t enough to secure the win against a tough Nuggets team.

Despite the strong individual performances, the Sixers couldn’t overcome the Nuggets’ balanced attack and fell short in a closely contested game. However, the resilience and effort shown by Maxey, Yabusele, and the rest of the team is a positive sign moving forward.

The Sixers will look to bounce back from this loss and continue to build chemistry and cohesion as they push towards the playoffs. With players like Maxey and Yabusele stepping up in key moments, the future looks bright for Philadelphia as they aim to make a deep postseason run.

  • 50 ‘Saturday Night Live’ Catchphrases We Say Now

    1985

    “That’s the ticket”

Uttered by Jon Lovitz’s pathological liar character, Tommy Flanagan, when he’d hit upon a particularly egregious whopper, this line was also Lovitz’s ticket to surviving the notorious 1985-86 “S.N.L.” season and sticking around for four more years.

    1986

    “Well isn’t that special?”

Even though she’s a fountain of catchphrases, the Church Lady is recognizable without even opening her mouth: All she needs are those pursed lips set hard to one side and she’s ready to start judging you. (Isn’t that convenient?) This Dana Carvey character, the host of “Church Chat,” came along at a perfect time for religious satire, when scandal-prone televangelists and their tingling nether regions were making national news. The Church Lady shot to popularity, but there must be someone who doesn’t find her chicken-winged Superior Dance funny … now, who could it be …

    1986

    “Choppin’ broccoli”

In addition to the Church Lady, Dana Carvey debuted another defining character in Season 12: Derek Stevens, a washed-up British singer-songwriter who’s antsy to “bloody score.” When he meets with record executives (Phil Hartman and Sigourney Weaver) and doesn’t have a demo as promised, he improvises — performing a song technically called “The Lady I Know” but that has gone down in pop history as “Choppin’ Broccoli,” a send-up of the ubiquitous self-serious rock-pop ballads of the 1980s. Carvey repeatedly revived Stevens during his “S.N.L.” run and even performed the song with a full orchestra on “The Tonight Show” in 2014. If the sight of the cruciferous vegetable doesn’t already evoke this earworm, we promise, it will now.

    1987

    “We’re gonna pump you up”

Hear me now and believe me later: Hans and Franz (Dana Carvey and Kevin Nealon) came from a small village in Austria to host this weightlifting show.

    1989

    “Party on”

With a blast of cable-access graphics and furiously strummed electric guitar, “Wayne’s World” comes to you direct from Wayne’s mom’s basement in Aurora, Ill. At the sketch’s core are two best friends, Wayne Campbell and Garth Algar (Mike Myers and Dana Carvey), separating what rules from what sucks: Aerosmith? “We’re not worthy!” Julia Roberts? “Schwing!” Their manic slacker energy and guileless enthusiasm even propelled them onto the big screen — just don’t mix them up with their spiritual cousins, Bill and Ted, because that would be bogus.

    1989

    “Wouldn’t be prudent”

Dana Carvey’s George H.W. Bush is by many accounts the greatest presidential impression in the history of “S.N.L.” It somehow managed to seem realistic but abstract, savage and gentle, highly specific to this patrician Republican as well as a broad cartoon of all politicians. His first efforts at Bush, who did not present nearly as many obvious targets as his son, zeroed in on his attempts to act tough, but then as he kept doing them, Carvey got playful, becoming increasingly stylized in movement and language, pruning dialogue down, speaking in catchphrases (“Not gonna do it”), repeating them over and over, until they became half-enunciated mumbles. He came off like a politician so determined to say nothing that he’s veering into silence.

    1989

    “Touch my monkey”

Based, Mike Myers has said, on both a German waiter he once knew in Toronto and the avant-garde musician Klaus Nomi, the severe, turtleneck-clad Dieter was a talk-show host extraordinaire — if hosting means alternately ignoring your guests and screaming at them to pet your primate.

    1990

    “Wrong!!!”

Dana Carvey leads “The McLaughlin Group,” where the other panelists just can’t seem to get up to speed.

    1990

“Don’t look at my bum, bum looker”

Mike Myers is Simon, a little English boy having his bath. Keep your eyes on his draw-rings, you cheeky monkey.

Molly Shannon on Kicking, Stretching and Getting Physical

It was never my experience that anyone was like, “OK, let’s get a character with a catchphrase.” I personally think that if you’re manufacturing a catchphrase, trying to push it, people will smell the lack of authenticity. When it’s organic and it feels real, people are going to latch onto it. It has to start with the depth of the character, and then the catchphrase has to fit in an authentic way with that character.

With the characters I created, I was just writing from myself, and sometimes I would just write stuff that was fun to say. [In the Sally O’Malley voice]: “I like to kick, stretch and kick!” It feels musical. Then I added a physical thing with it, and that was also fun. That’s a good thing because maybe other people can have fun saying it, too.

But I’m not really thinking all that when I’m writing it. I’m just thinking, This is fun.

You get an instant feel for when [a character or phrase is catching on] because you’re living in New York City, so people will come up to you on the street right away like: “Oh my God, Mary Katherine Gallagher! She reminds me of my sister! Oh my God, my cousin!” With Sally O’Malley, people started saying: “Could you leave my friend a message? She just turned 50.” I still get that constantly. I do backyard Sally O’Malleys for friends a lot, where I’ll wish people happy birthday doing the character.

I originally did Mary Katherine Gallagher in my stage show, and she was similar then: She’s trying out for something; she hopes she gets it; she acts out a little bit, and then she behaves very badly and gets sent away. But then she ends up getting the part, and she celebrates. My good friend Debra Palermo, who I grew up with in Cleveland, used to come to all my stage shows in L.A. where I did that character. She would always see me before my show and be like, “There she is, my superstar!” So I threw “superstar” into that first sketch with Gabriel Byrne for Debbie — to make her laugh because I knew she was watching.

That’s how not thought out it was. In the moment, I felt like saying it. And then it became a thing.

But what was so cool is I was writing from within. I’m writing an exaggerated version of how I felt as a little girl — anxious, accident-prone, hopeful, nervous, excited. It’s beautiful that when you write from within, people relate to it.

And again, it’s a word, and then it’s physical: It’s “Superstaaaar!” You feel an energy. You lift your arms up into the sky — who doesn’t feel good saying that? As a performer, I do it right now while I’m talking to you. I’ll never get sick of it. It’s joyful, celebratory, fun.

I’m so glad I got the job because “S.N.L.” is the one place where you can think of an idea Monday, write it up Tuesday night, and then it’s live on-air Saturday. It’s like a comedy school where you can just get your ideas live on TV. Where else would you be able to do that? Lorne created a place where comedians get to think stuff up and then produce their own sketches, and then develop it in front of an audience at dress rehearsal. So I just think the show was set up for [minting characters with catchphrases]. “Saturday Night Live” gives those characters life. — As told to Austin Considine
