How will La Niña affect Florida’s weather?
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — After a very long, chilly and damp January, most of us are ready for more sunshine in the Sunshine State!
As of Jan. 29, we only had four days in the 80s in both Vero Beach and West Palm Beach during January.

On Jan. 16, the Climate Prediction Center released its outlook for February across the U.S. The agency’s goal is to accurately predict the temperature and precipitation trend for each month and season.
For Florida, the current prediction is one that many residents will be very happy with after the January we experienced.

Temperature outlook for February 2025 in the U.S. The extended forecast shows a trend of above-normal temperatures. In February, the average high temperature for West Palm Beach is 76.7 and our low temperature is 60.1. In Vero Beach, the high is 75.6 and the low is 54.5.
In addition to our temperatures, we are looking to have a drier trend for February.
In January, we totaled 0.94 in West Palm Beach and 1.13 in Vero Beach. Despite the cool and damp trend, not a lot of rain fell compared to what we normally experience. On average, West Palm Beach sees 3.14 inches of rainfall, whereas Vero Beach sees 2.48 inches of precipitation.

The reason for this prediction is due to La Niña conditions that are currently present and predicted to persist through April 2025.
In a La Niña pattern, the trade winds push warmer water toward Asia and bring cooler waters to the west coast of the U.S. This typically means dry weather, warmer conditions and drought for the southern U.S. and cooler temperatures for the Upper Midwest and Pacific Northwest.

Who Is Ohio State Buckeyes Coach Ryan Day’s Wife? All About Nina Day
Ohio State University’s football coach, Ryan Day, has found the ultimate teammate in his wife, Nina Day.
After two seasons as a defensive coordinator, Ryan was named head coach at Ohio State University in 2019; Nina has since been dubbed the “First Lady of Ohio State Football” by their Columbus community.
“I don’t think any other place compares to [Ohio State]. This place is very, very special. We knew it the minute we got here,” she told WSYX ABC 6 in August 2019.
Ryan and Nina have known each other since they were kids growing up in New Hampshire — they even played on the same T-ball team, per an August 2024 interview with WBNS 10TV. Fast forward, the couple wed in June 2005 and they have since welcomed three children: Ryan Jr., Grace and Ourania.
The Day family moved more than 10 times for Ryan’s coaching career before they landed in Ohio. Nina has supported her husband through every win and loss — and on Jan. 10 she’ll be rooting from the stands as the Buckeyes face off against the Texas Longhorns in the 2024-25 College Football Playoffs semifinals in Dallas.

Nina (whose full first name is Christina) grew up in Manchester, N.H., about a “mile and a half away” from Ryan.
As kids, they played T-ball together in 1985 and looking back, Nina says her husband had a coach’s mentality even then.
“He yelled at me for picking dandelions and told me to get focused. He’s always been super competitive,” she told WBNS 10TV in August 2024.
The pair attended the same schools growing up, including college at the University of New Hampshire. Ryan played football at UNH, and Nina described their relationship as “off and on” during that time.

After college, Ryan and Nina rekindled their romance and married in June 2005.
“There was a comfort level with him. We’re still best friends. I think that’s the best way a marriage can be,” she said while sharing the couple’s love story with WBNS 10TV in August 2024.

Ryan and Nina have three children: Ryan Jr. (who goes by R.J.), Grace and Ourania (who goes by Nia).
“He is an unbelievable dad,” Nina told WSYX ABC 6 in August 2019. “He’s very, very hands-on with the children.”
R.J., a high school sophomore in Columbus, is following in his dad’s footsteps as a quarterback — and Nina couldn’t be more proud.
“[Ryan and R.J.] are best friends. They’re both football junkies, and they bond over that,” she told WBNS 10TV in August 2024. “I see R.J. coaching one day just like his dad.”

From the beginning, Nina has cheered on Ryan’s football coaching dreams.
She is anything but unfamiliar with college sports: Her dad, Stan Spirou, was the men’s basketball head coach at Southern New Hampshire University for 33 seasons. She grew up rooting for the Penmen alongside her mom, Patricia, her twin sister, Kelly, and her brother, Chuck.
“If I didn’t have my dad, I’m not sure we’d be where we are. He has provided so much insight,” she told WBNS 10TV in August 2024. “When Ryan got into coaching, he really encouraged us to go after it.”
Nina continued, “Within a 15-year span, we moved 11 times. In that time, we had three children. It was a lot. It was very unstable for a long time.”
The family has now been in Ohio for eight years, and while Ryan has earned many accolades throughout his career, such as 2019 Big Ten Conference Coach of the Year, he has yet to win a College Football Playoffs title — a trophy he and his are currently vying for.

As the “first lady,” Nina is in the limelight — something she has had to get used to.

When Ryan was 8 years old, his dad, Ray Day, died by suicide. The event eventually spurred the Buckeyes coach and his wife to advocate for mental health.
“We were married 15 years before I started asking questions and said Ray’s name,” Nina shared during an interview with WBNS 10TV in May 2022 after donating $100,000 to On Our Sleeves Movement for Children’s Mental Health. “This journey has been great for us because we’ve tackled mental illness and talked about his dad in ways we never could before.”
That same year, the couple made a $1 million gift to Ohio State and established The Nina and Ryan Day Resilience Fund, which supports mental health research and services at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and College of Medicine.
“Nina and I both understand how important it is to have someone you can turn to for help and strength in times of difficulty,” Ryan said in a press release. “Our hope is that this fund will allow more Buckeyes to find the support they need to become more resilient.”

If you’re like us, then you’ve been impatiently waiting for the worst-kept secret on General Hospital to finally come to light. Well, more importantly, waiting for Willow (Katelyn MacMullen) to learn that her new boyfriend Drew (Cameron Mathison) was sleeping with her mother.
Willow knowing this information could truly change things. It could bring an end to this wildly unpopular relationship between her and Drew. As it stands now on the soap canvas, absolutely no one in Port Charles wants to see these two pawing over each other and attempting to defend their tawdry romance — and for good reason. Michael (Chad Duell) is Willow’s husband and Drew’s nephew, and the latter two completely disregarded Michael’s feelings.
Speaking of Michael, in the wake of him being caught in the explosion at Sonny’s (Maurice Benard), Willow and Drew have been a toxic mess. Drew pushed Willow to use her power as Michael’s medical proxy to ban Carly (Laura Wright) and Sonny from Michael’s bedside until she gets custody of her kids returned to her. Although Willow is just trying to have access to her children as a mother, Drew manipulating Willow and propping her up to take on the formidable Corinthos/Quartermaine/Spencer clan in such a brazen way is alienating those in town. Frankly, the situation is alienating plenty of General Hospital viewers as well (we recently named Drew in particular the most infuriating character on the soap in recent memory).

It’s a shame that Willow is literally blowing up her life for this “disowned” Quartermaine, a point Nina (Cynthia Watros) emphasized in the General Hospital episode that aired on January 14. She told Drew that he’s managed to ruin her daughter’s life, and he smugly told Nina he and Willow have every intention of being together. He even accused Nina of not being happy for him and Willow because she’s jealous.
Having said all that, with the truth needing to be shared with Willow and Nina growing frustrated with Drew’s bad influence on her daughter, will Nina be the one to drop the bombshell?
We have to consider that there is a strong possibility that Nina may do just that. With Willow gearing up for a war against the most powerful families in Port Charles the more she listens to Drew, Nina might see the urgency in opening Willow’s eyes to who Drew is. Nina knows Wylie (Viron Weaver) and Amelia (Sequoia & Serenity Mork Macko) need to be surrounded by love and stability during this difficult time, and that Willow feuding with Carly, Sonny, Jason (Steve Burton) and Tracy (Jane Elliot) doesn’t help that cause. To her credit, Nina is trying to play peacemaker, and Drew keeps getting in the way.

However, if Nina does confess to Willow about her own escapades with the newly elected politician, Nina risks losing the close relationship she’s been able to build with her daughter. As angry as Willow may become with Drew for withholding the information, she could become just as angry with Nina. For months, Willow confided in Nina about her growing feelings for Drew, and her mother never confessed to already sleeping with him. Willow may feel that’s a major betrayal.
Nina is fully aware that her Drew news threatens to blow up her relationship with Willow, but will Nina be a selfless mother and risk that in an effort to save her child from herself?
It’s too early to tell, but we hope Willow finds this all out soon. And if Nina isn’t going to tell it, then our vote is for Carly to learn the information and gleefully confront Willow and Drew with it as one part of her revenge plot.

La Niña is living up to expectations in Southern California
(KTLA) – Los Angeles ended 2024 with one of its driest periods on record – a result of La Niña’s effects, weather officials told KTLA 5 News.
Despite beginning the year with historic rainfall levels, an extended dry spell has covered Southern California since spring, bringing severe drought conditions that have fueled several large wildfires in recent months.
In the downtown L.A. metro area, from May 6 to Dec. 31, the area only received 0.16″ of rain, making the seven-month stretch the second driest in recorded history, according to data from the National Weather Service.
The only period that topped this dry stretch was in 1962, when the downtown area received only 0.14 inches during the same seven-month span.

During a La Niña year, winter temperatures are warmer than normal in the south and cooler than normal in the north. The phenomenon can have global impacts on weather, wildfires, ecosystems and more, according to NWS.
“During La Niña events, trade winds are even stronger than usual, pushing more warm water toward Asia,” NWS explained. “Off the west coast of the Americas, upwelling increases, bringing cold, nutrient-rich water to the surface. These cold waters in the Pacific push the jet stream northward and tend to lead to drought in the southern U.S. and heavy rains and flooding in the Pacific Northwest and Canada.”
In recent years, the weather pattern has brought severe drought conditions to Southern California, fostering dangerous wildfire conditions.
In the coming new year, a chance to break the dry spell may arrive soon with a potential storm system headed for California around New Year’s Day or in the first week of January, according to Todd Hall, a senior meteorologist at the NWS offices in L.A. and Oxnard.
