  • Mohammed Shami in, Nitish Kumar Reddy out; cloud over Abhishek Sharma: India’s likely XI vs England for 2nd T20I

Team India, riding high on momentum after a convincing seven-wicket victory in the opening match, will look to double their advantage against England in the second game of the five-match series on Saturday in Chennai. Despite lingering fitness concerns surrounding Mohammed Shami, the hosts appear well-equipped to maintain their dominance.

Shami, who was expected to feature in the first game, was sidelined to allow the management to assess his readiness further. His potential inclusion in this match will depend on a last-minute fitness evaluation. In his absence, the Indian bowling attack excelled in Kolkata, with Arshdeep Singh dismantling England with the new ball and Varun Chakaravarthy delivering in the middle overs.

The Chepauk pitch is expected to favor spinners, much like it has in the past. India’s spin trio of Varun Chakaravarthy, Axar Patel, and Ravi Bishnoi will be key in exploiting the conditions. The home side boasts of quality and variety in a line-up consisting Varun, vice-captain Axar Patel, and Ravi Bishnoi, making them well-prepared for the challenge.

England’s spinners, Adil Rashid and Liam Livingstone, will need to step up significantly after struggling in Kolkata. With Chepauk’s tricky surface in play, spinners on both sides are expected to have a major say in the outcome.

India’s opening pair of Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson has been a revelation, providing consistent starts since forming their partnership last year. In the first T20I, Abhishek dominated England with a blistering knock, striking at over 230. However, there are concerns over Abhishek’s fitness after it was reported that the left-hander has twisted his ankle during India’s training session.

If Abhishek is unavailable for selection, there could be a possibility of captain Suryakumar Yadav promoting himself as an opener, since there is no designated opener in the side. Samson, meanwhile, has three centuries in his last six innings, cementing their status as India’s first-choice openers.

They also offer that rare right-hand-left-hand combination at the top, a dynamic that keeps opposition bowlers on their toes.

Captain Suryakumar Yadav will look to regain form, having struggled with just two fifties in his last 11 innings since the T20 World Cup final. Although his performances haven’t hurt India’s winning streak, he will be eager to make a significant impact and lead from the front in Chennai.

If Shami is declared fit, he could replace Nitish Kumar Reddy in the XI. England, on the other hand, might bolster their spin department by including young leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed and have already added Brydon Carse and Jamie Smith to their squad.

With both teams adjusting to the conditions, a thrilling contest awaits at Chepauk.

    India’s likely XI

Openers: Abhishek Sharma/Suryakumar Yadav (if Abhishek is unfit), Sanju Samson

Middle-order: Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Rinku Singh

    All-rounders: Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel

Bowlers: Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Shami, Varun Chakaravarthy

(If Shami remains unfit, he could place Nitish Kumar Reddy)

After a thrilling victory in the first T20I against England, India will be looking to continue their winning momentum in the second match of the series. However, there are a few changes expected in the playing XI for the upcoming game.

One of the major changes is the inclusion of Mohammed Shami in place of Nitish Kumar Reddy. Shami, who was rested for the first match, is likely to make a comeback to the team for the second T20I. His experience and pace will add a new dimension to India’s bowling attack.

On the other hand, there is a cloud over Abhishek Sharma’s inclusion in the playing XI. The young all-rounder had a forgettable outing in the first match and might make way for another player in the team.

Here’s India’s likely XI for the 2nd T20I against England:

    1. Rohit Sharma
    2. KL Rahul
    3. Virat Kohli (c)
    4. Suryakumar Yadav
    5. Rishabh Pant (wk)
    6. Hardik Pandya
    7. Washington Sundar
    8. Shardul Thakur
    9. Bhuvneshwar Kumar
    10. Yuzvendra Chahal
    11. Mohammed Shami

With a strong batting line-up and a potent bowling attack, India will be hoping to put up another dominant performance against England in the second T20I. Stay tuned for an exciting clash between the two cricketing giants.

  • “Something I Never Heard”: Cricket Australia CEO On MCG Crowd’s Roar After Nitish Reddy’s Ton

“Something I Never Heard”: Cricket Australia CEO On MCG Crowd’s Roar After Nitish Reddy’s Ton

The collective roar of Indian fans after Nitish Kumar Reddy’s maiden hundred is something that he has never heard at the MCG, and Cricket Australia’s outgoing CEO Nick Hockley said on Sunday that it validated the decision to add a Test to the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The CA’s decision to increase the number of Tests for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy from four to five has proved to be a masterstroke as crowd attendance and viewership records are set to surpass the hallowed Ashes.

“I want to say thank you to everyone who turned up, the atmosphere last night when Nitish Kumar Reddy scored his hundred, the roar of the crowd was nothing that I have ever heard,” Hockley told PTI in an exclusive interaction.

The record total attendance (over five days) for a Boxing Day Test till date is 271,865 against England back in 2013 and the fourth Test involving India has already witnessed a footfall of 255,462 spectators.

With two more days left, CA is expecting the attendance to go well past 300,000.

    Hockley couldn’t be more thrilled.

“Absolutely thrilled with the number of fans that have come round from all over India. It’s been an absolutely incredible atmosphere as we got over a quarter million people over the gates and that’s too on days one, two and three,” Hockley said.

“This Border-Gavaskar Trophy has had the biggest Boxing Day crowd ever passing the Ashes and the series is so delicately poised now, it is living up to every hype.” Hockley, who has had a good working relationship with the BCCI, said it was a no-brainer that the four-Test series between India and Australia transformed into a five-match rubber, considering its massive following.

“I think it speaks about the relations between India and Australia and fans are always excited to see these two teams. The five-Test series is what the fans deserve, players deserve. This series is likely to be alive going into Sydney.

“We haven’t had a full fifth day as we have had some unfinished business. I thank and am very grateful to the BCCI to have agreed to play a five-Test series. Hope it continues for the rest of the time.”

Days 1, 2 and 3 in Sydney all but sold out

There is forecast of rain during the New Year’s Test in Sydney but even then the Indian diaspora will throng to the grounds with very limited tickets still left for the first three days.

“Sydney will be very, very full. I think there are only very few tickets left for days one, two and three. We encourage people to quickly get their tickets if they want to come on Day 4.

“There is a wonderful community from India in Sydney and we expect a similar atmosphere like MCG,” he noted.

Excited about prospects of cricket’s inclusion in Brisbane 2032

Los Angeles Olympics 2028 will witness the re-introduction of cricket at the quadrennial extravaganza and Hockley along with current ICC chairman Jay Shah are also in talks with Local Organising Committee (LOC) of Brisbane 2032 for keeping the sport in the Games’ roster.

“I am super excited for cricket being in Los Angeles, 2028. It is going to be amazing. It will be an opportunity to showcase cricket to a global audience and we are very excited to host the Olympics in Brisbane in 2032. We are hopeful and excited about the prospects of cricket being part of Brisbane 2032.” “It is exciting times for cricket and the Olympics. We want more people who get to see our great game. T20 cricket for men and women is incredible entertainment and it has been the starting point of our discussion as to how we can help to grow the game globally,” Hockley concluded.

  • Boland insists Australia in ‘strong position’ despite Nitish heroics

    INDIA TOUR OF AUSTRALIA, 2024-25

Scott Boland praised Nitish Reddy for his fighting hundred

Australia are still in a good position to win the ongoing MCG Test, according to pacer Scott Boland. Even though India had a fruitful day on Day 3 after that memorable partnership between Nitish Reddy and Washington Sundar, Boland believes Australia can stamp their authority with the bat on the fourth day.

“We’re leading by 115 (116) runs, so we are in a pretty strong position,” Boland said after the day’s play. “Obviously it could have been better, but I think that’s how Test match cricket ebbs and flows. Hopefully tomorrow morning we get that first wicket and then put on a really nice lead and see how the game plays after that.”

Boland also backed compatriot Mitchell Starc to shrug off a potential injury after he appeared to be holding his back at one point on the third day. “He’s okay, I think he’s just had a bit of a niggle in his back or rib, but he came out after the (tea) break and was bowling 140 (kph) so I think he’ll be fine,” Boland noted.

“I think he’s underrated for how tough he is. A couple of years ago here at the MCG he had a broken finger and we were planning for him not to bowl at all – and then he came out and bowled 140k swingers. He’s someone who can play through a lot of pain.”

The 35-year-old quick then reserved praise for Nitish, who brought up his maiden ton on the big stage. “He’s playing really nicely,” Boland remarked. “Coming in down the middle, it’s a lower-order, but he’s sort of trying to put the pressure back on us. And he’s playing nicely. He played really well. He’s been a young guy from India who’s come through and strikes the ball really well.

“It looks like he’s got pretty much every shot in the book. I played the ‘A’ game against him, the PM’s game and then a couple of Tests. You see he can score all around the ground. He’s obviously a very nice player and does well in the IPL and he’s doing well here in Australian conditions as well.”

Nitish’s batting partner on Day 3, Washington Sundar also waxed lyricals on the youngster pointing out that his century will be remembered for a long time. “One thing for sure is he is mentally very very strong,” Washington said.

“I’ve known him for quite a few years. The way he went about his business was amazing. He made sure he picked those phases in the game where he thought he would get a few boundaries. He made sure he was also aware that we needed to see through a few balls as well when the situation got really challenging for us. This hundred will be talked about and remembered for a long time.”

On his own fighting fifty, Washington revealed that he received plenty of backing from the coaching staff. “Very happy honestly, Gauti bhai and all support staff kept believing in me, kept telling me what I’m capable of at this level, in this format,” he said. “That really means a lot to me, that sort of makes me believe that I can do special things in this format. Had a good day, would have been even better if I had gone on to get some more runs and hadn’t lost my wicket but ya we are in a good position today.”

Washington is no stranger to stepping up under pressure having already been involved in a very memorable partnership alongside Shardul Thakur at the Gabba the last time India toured Australia. The Tamil Nadu allrounder pointed out the importance of fighting through the difficult phases especially when India were in trouble. “Playing against Australia in Australia you are always going to be put under a challenge no matter what,” he said. “Challenges can be different in different ways but it is just that you got to be ready to fight through those challenging situations.

“I was just thinking about the things that I need to be doing so that I would see off some important spells, they came in quite hard. We just made sure we didn’t lose any wicket during those spells and once we got through those spells, runs sort of started to come easier as well. I think the entire day was a mixture of different phases.

“When I went in things were quite difficult and quite challenging, obviously I had to see through the initial 20 balls and then runs started coming in. And then once we went back after Tea since it rained for a long time, the wicket got a little stickier and started to do a lot more. Those 30-40 minutes were important for us to see through which we did.”

Even though India are still trailing by 116 runs, Washington is hopeful of going for the win provided India come up with a top class bowling performance on the fourth day. “I still feel there is something for the bowlers on this wicket,” he said. “If we can get them all out around 150, Sun doesn’t come out a lot, it’s been overcast for most of the game. If we can bowl in the right areas and take our chances, we should be able to get them for 150 and Day 5 can be exciting.”

Australia’s stand-in captain Pat Cummins has asserted that his team is in a “strong position” despite the heroics of Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Nitish Rana in the ongoing series.

Rana’s explosive batting display in the second Test match against Australia has put India in a commanding position, but Australian fast bowler Scott Boland believes that his team still has the upper hand.

“We know that Nitish Rana played exceptionally well in the last Test, but we are confident in our abilities as a team. We have a strong batting and bowling lineup, and we believe that we can bounce back in the series,” Boland said in a recent press conference.

Australia is currently trailing in the series against India, but Boland remains optimistic about his team’s chances of turning things around in the upcoming matches.

“We have a lot of talented players who are capable of stepping up and delivering when it matters the most. We just need to stay focused and continue to play our brand of cricket,” Boland added.

As the series progresses, all eyes will be on Australia as they look to make a comeback and level the playing field against a formidable Indian team led by Rana. With Boland’s confidence and determination, Australia will certainly be a team to watch out for in the remaining matches.

Nitish Kumar Reddy’s father touches Sunil Gavaskar’s feet at MCG after son’s hundred; here’s what happens next

Nitish Kumar Reddy’s father, Mutyala Reddy, touched legendary Sunil Gavaskar’s feet in an emotional meeting on the sidelines of the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) after his son scored a maiden Test ton against Australia on Saturday in the ongoing fourth Test. Along with Mutyala, was his Nitish mother, sister and brother.

In the video that went viral, Mutyala was seen going down on both knees and touched Gavaskar‘s feet before the duo hugged each other. The former India captain also greeted the other members of the Reddy family with folded hands and said “Bless you.”

“You know about the big sacrifices he made (in Nitish’s journey) and because of you I have tears in my eyes. India has found a gem in cricket because of you,” Gavaskar said further in a voice subdued by emotions.

Nitish’s mother, who was emotional too, told Gavaskar that she was still not able to believe that her son was playing at such a big venue and produced such a ‘big innings’.

Starting the day 4 at an overnight score of 105 not out, the 21-year-old Reddy could add just nine runs on Sunday and played a huge role in India cutting the deficit to 105 runs in reply to Australia’s 474. India were all out for 369.

Having scored a string of scores around forty in the first three Tests, Nitish came to bat on Day 3 after the fall of Rishabh Pant with India reeling at 191/6. He lost Ravindra Jadeja coon after before the Andhra Pradesh batter was joined by Washington Sundar as the duo added 127 runs for the eighth wicket to bail India out of the blushes.

Reddy’s hundred bring tears on Shastri’s eyes

Earlier on Saturday, former Indian coach Ravi Shastri too got emotional when Reddy reached his hundred. “More importantly, the way he batted, showcasing his talent and discipline, which is why you and Irfan were speaking (while commentating),” Shastri told Star Sports.

“I was tongue-tied and I had tears in my eyes. I don’t get tears (of joy) in my eyes that easily. I enjoyed watching (Reddy’s innings) yesterday,” Shastri added.

Nitish Kumar Reddy blossoms to give India hope as century stalls Australia | Cricket

As India’s tour of Australia has worn on, the coverage has become preoccupied with fading veterans – Steve Smith, Usman Khawaja, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli – and speculation about whether somebody’s decent score is a last hurrah, or if a lack of one is a terminal sign. A preoccupation with whether body language or temper tantrums or patterns of dismissal mean one thing or another, whether any of these interpretations can tell us how much longer they can push on, or how close to the end they might be.

Sport obsesses about retirements, about endings. Will a player will finish on their terms or carry on too long? God forbid they are forced out too soon. Perhaps these are symbolic little deaths, a way to come to grips with the idea in life. The sporting version of kids getting a rabbit or a budgie. But the tendency strays into the ghoulish, hanging noses over the fence to stare at great players and waiting for them to drop. The enjoyment of what a player does can be lost in wondering what they might do next.

So while the focus has been on the elders, it only became clear during the fourth Test in Melbourne that the story of this series is being written by the young. There was Sam Konstas on day one, wowing the crowd in his brief but furious attacking burst, then Nitish Kumar Reddy on day three, with an innings of far more significance and substance to reach his first Test century. At 358 for nine answering Australia’s 474, he has taken India from almost certain defeat to some hope of salvation.

From his debut a month ago, Reddy immediately showed signs that he has what it takes. Only 21, he already had a name for himself in India after some huge scores in age-group cricket and a good IPL season with the bat earlier this year, though his seam bowling got smashed. Meanwhile, his handful of first-class fixtures for domestic minnow state Andhra have been underwhelming with the bat but encouraging with the ball. Fortunately, India’s selectors divined enough to get him into the squad and then into the XI to start the series.

Starting his tour in Perth, Reddy had the range to top score with 41 in the first innings when India were sunk, last man out, then punch the bruise in the second innings when India had got on top, 38 not out from 27 balls. In Adelaide, top score again, both innings, with 42. No support again, last man out and then second last. Even in Brisbane where he only made 16, he batted an hour and a quarter as India ground towards avoiding the follow-on, key to them escaping with a draw.

So in Melbourne it was a similar story: trailing by 283 on the first innings when he came in at six wickets down. He had the same advantage as he had enjoyed in most of his innings, namely a free hit given India’s precarious position. Yet, this time, he had something new: a partner with proper batting credentials in Washington Sundar.

The pacing of Reddy’s innings was measured beautifully. Even so far behind the game, he made it a point immediately to be busy, looking to work shots into gaps rather than just defend. He called loudly and ran hard, often completing threes and at one point a four. He wasn’t fussed about boundaries, hitting only a few in his first half-century, though as in Perth he made a point of dynamic footwork to Nathan Lyon, sometimes defending on the march but at one point lofting him for six.

Most impressive was his handling of pace, surviving Pat Cummins’ hostility and Scott Boland’s probing. Cummins used the short ball in a fashion that seemed all the more nasty for how much it was measured, snorting a couple per over up armpits and nostrils in a visceral display, in between pitching further up to beat edges repeatedly. Reddy took the hits, rode the bounce, kept some down and let some pass with a stylish sway away. His physical presence was about showing that he was up to the challenge.

It was tough, all day long, through the wicketless second session and deep into the third. Reddy had a few moments of luck, including a bizarre leading edge from an attempted leg glance that somehow flew behind the batter in exactly the opposite direction, to second slip. Smith was so flummoxed by it finding him there that he couldn’t hang on. But mostly Reddy was the one in control, fighting to stay there every ball. It never got easy, but he never wavered.

At least until reaching 97, when his stoic partner Washington was finally out for an even 50. Suddenly nerves packed the stadium. With significantly more than 80,000 people at the MCG for the third day running, these doubts reflected in the player. Reddy turned down singles that would have exposed Jasprit Bumrah and obviously didn’t have a clear enough chat before the last ball of an over, when Bumrah ran a panicked two instead of the single that would have kept the senior man on strike.

This gave Cummins a full over at Bumrah, who duly nicked the third ball, prompting bedlam as Reddy was reunited with Siraj. India’s jack managed to defend his stumps for the final three balls, and as much as Australian supporters had been roaring for the wicket, the roar of appreciation when Reddy smoked a straight four was even louder. Applause and respect for the skill and courage of a young star on the rise.

The only thing sport coverage loves as much as retirements is arrivals. Getting into a lather about young players, the thrill of the new. Most of them aren’t able to stay at the top. Washington was that guy for India last time, in Brisbane 2021, and has barely played since. Australia in recent years celebrated young openers in Matthew Renshaw, Cameron Bancroft, Will Pucovski, all of whom have now vanished from the Test arena.

Reddy’s career from here might be anything. His time might be long or short. What we can say is that his work on this day was astonishing, a kid who recently received his 21st birthday key using it to unlock his method. The skill, the composure, and the degree of difficulty, means it’s an innings that should sit in the top tier of MCG centuries. From here who knows? Resuming on 105 on the fourth morning, Siraj might help him add a few more. At 116 runs behind, India are not entirely out of this match.

In a thrilling match against Australia, Nitish Kumar Reddy showcased his exceptional talent and skill, scoring a magnificent century to lead India to victory. With this stellar performance, Reddy has undoubtedly become a beacon of hope for Indian cricket fans, especially as the team faced a temporary stall in their run chase.

Reddy’s innings was nothing short of brilliant, displaying impeccable technique, composure under pressure, and an unwavering determination to succeed. His ability to adapt to different situations and play with a mix of aggression and patience was truly commendable, earning him the praise of fans and critics alike.

As India continues to strive for success on the international cricket stage, players like Nitish Kumar Reddy are proving to be instrumental in the team’s quest for glory. With his remarkable skills and match-winning performances, Reddy has certainly blossomed into a key player for India, instilling hope and confidence in fans across the country.

As we celebrate Reddy’s incredible century and India’s triumph over Australia, let us look forward to more stellar performances from this talented cricketer and the rest of the Indian team. The future of Indian cricket is indeed bright, and players like Nitish Kumar Reddy are leading the way towards greater success and glory on the cricket field.

Coming in at No. 8, Reddy was eventually dismissed for 114 off 189 balls with 11 fours and a six on Day Four morning.

“More importantly, the way he batted, showcasing his talent and discipline, which is why you and Irfan were speaking (while commentating),” Shastri told Star Sports.

“I was tongue-tied and I had tears in my eyes. I don’t get tears (of joy) in my eyes that easily. I enjoyed watching (Reddy’s innings) yesterday,” he added.
