  • ‘A Complete Unknown’ earns eight Academy Award nominations

To a Bob Dylan noob like me, A Complete Unknown forced me to set down my prejudices and pick up folk music. I cannot do justice to Bob Dylan—artistically, spiritually, or historically; people spend their entire lives appreciating his art. Published, academic papers analyze his lyrics, so profound is his songwriting.

He’s one of Time’s top 100 most influential people of the 20th century: He is a “master poet, caustic social critic and intrepid, guiding spirit of the counterculture generation.” He is the only songwriter to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize; he didn’t show up to receive it. In short, I can’t do the man Bob Dylan justice in a short article.

So, let’s stick with reviewing the 2024 film, A Complete Unknown, starring Timothée Chalamet (Bob Dylan), Monica Barbaro (Joan Baez), Edward Norton (Pete Seeger), and Elle Fanning (Sylvie Russo), directed by James Mangold.

A Complete Unknown: Is it accurate?

Parental guidance is advised. The movie includes profanity, heavy drinking and smoking, and references to sex.

The biopic dramatizes Dylan’s early career, centering around two love interests. One is a historical person, folk singer Joan Baez, and a fictionalized woman, Sylvie Russo, who is nevertheless based on Dylan’s first wife, Sara Lownds. The dramatization focuses on Dylan’s famously cryptic persona and vagabond personality—an artist in the truest sense of the word.

Dylan’s inscrutable psyche is inseparable from his artistic genius. Although his early folk music and brilliant songwriting propelled him to stardom, A Complete Unknown explores his fight to find creative freedom, in the midst of winning—and losing—relationships.

The musical genius of A Complete Unknown

The movie is an outstanding accomplishment on the musical merits alone. Chalamet, Gen Z’s idol and celebrity crush, doesn’t coast in this monumental role. He recorded 40 Bob Dylan tracks for the film. You can listen to the cast’s original performances on the movie’s soundtrack. Their commitment to musical veracity is borderline insane. They used old microphones to capture similar audio quality, archival, period-piece guitars or their replicas, and didn’t use earpieces.

The unadulterated passion for artistry in the film floored me. For artists of any stripe, it’s hard to imagine how this film won’t inspire you.

What can Christians learn from A Complete Unknown?

Very few explicit mentions of religion were made, but existential questions, including those pertaining to the Civil Rights movement and the Cold War, feature prominently in the movie. However, I want to focus on the theme of artistic integrity.

The film climaxes when Dylan uses a full band and an electric guitar to play at the Newport Folk Festival—and receives violent reactions from the crowd and the festival leaders. Profound, moving art is contentious. It divides. It will, to paraphrase a line in The Complete Unknown, “strike you down to the ground.”

The canon of Christian Scripture, sixty-six books, is art—literature. It is the greatest collection of art in existence. And it surely divides people.

“The word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12)

    Is Bob Dylan a Christian?

Dylan came to see the Bible as more than just beautiful literature, becoming a follower of Jesus in the late 70s and creating several gospel records. While he’s since been inconsistent, associating with Chabad, a Hasidic Jewish movement, at times, or saying music is his only true faith, he, as recently as 2022, said, “I’m a religious person. I read the scriptures a lot, meditate and pray, light candles in church. I believe in damnation and salvation, as well as predestination. The Five Books of Moses, Pauline Epistles, Invocation of the Saints, all of it.”

My point is not to interrogate Dylan’s faith. Instead, it is to point out that great art is a reflection of God’s creative powers. When we read the Bible as a list of rules, a science textbook, or anything but the kind of literature God inspired the original authors to write and pass down orally, we miss its power and beauty.

The Bible, just like a once-in-a-lifetime artist, like Doestoevksy, da Vinci, or Dylan, will “strike you to the ground.”

    But it’s more than that.

Are Artists above the consequences of sin?

Dylan’s erratic lifestyle eventually alienates his two love interests. His quiet, nonchalant persona is admirable regarding his treatment of fame and stardom. Dylan’s commitment to his artistic vision is laudable. Dostoevsky, one of the greatest authors and thinkers in history, was a Christian—and a raging gambling addict. You cannot separate a person’s life from their art, but even so, the greatest artists cannot escape the consequences of foolishness and sin.

I’m sure that Dylan would agree.

Do you appreciate the Bible, not just for how it tells us to live, but for its artistic beauty? Just as we cannot separate the artist from the art, we cannot separate God from his beautiful Word.

How can you give him glory for his Word, today?

  • Ariana Grande, Demi Moore and More React to 2025 Oscar Nominations

Grande was nominated for best supporting actress for “Wicked.”

Congratulations on your first nomination. Where were you when you found out?

I’m in London. I just got out of the bath. Oh! My therapist is calling to congratulate me. Hold on. I’ll tell her I’ll be right back. Oh my god, I’m sorry. I don’t even know what to say. It’s really hard to speak. I just got off the phone with my mom and my best friends and Kristin Chenoweth. And I have been texting with Cynthia [Erivo] and Jon [M. Chu] all morning.

What was your reaction when you heard your name?

I sobbed. I actually haven’t stopped sobbing since then. It’s been really overwhelming.

How did it feel to have your co-star Bowen Yang announce your name?

It felt like home. I love him so much, and he is my one of my best friends in the world. And he looked so chic. He texted me right before wishing me luck, and he texted me a week before saying, “I just found out that I’m doing this, and I can’t wait to hopefully utter your name.”

What does it mean for you and Cynthia to both get nominations?

It feels like such a magnificent celebration of this hard work that we were able to do together. It feels like we were passed the wand and broom by Kristin and Idina Menzel. They were nominated for the Tonys together, and now Cynthia and I get to have this recognition together.

Is this better than getting a Grammy nomination?

Oh my goodness. I’m burying my head in my tissue box. [Laughs]. Um… next question.

“Wicked” got 10 nominations in total. Why didn’t Jon get a nod for best director?

He is incredibly brilliant, and all of the other nominations stems from Jon. I know he feels like seeing ‘Wicked’ be celebrated is a celebration of him as well. We just got off Facetime, and I told him how much I love him, and the truth, which is that absolutely none of this could have happened without his leadership, brilliance, empathy and thoughtfulness.

Who are you going to bring with you to the ceremony?

I haven’t even had a chance to consider yet. I need a table for 40 Italians from Boca. How do we work that out?

The 2025 Oscar nominations have been announced, and the stars are already buzzing about who made the cut. Among those who have shared their reactions are Ariana Grande, Demi Moore, and more.

Ariana Grande took to social media to express her excitement about being nominated for Best Original Song for her work on the soundtrack of the hit film “Dreaming in Color.” The pop star gushed about the honor and thanked her fans for their ongoing support.

Demi Moore, who received a nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the critically acclaimed drama “The Last Goodbye,” shared her gratitude for the recognition. The actress said she was honored to be included among such talented performers and was looking forward to attending the ceremony.

Other stars, such as Bradley Cooper, Lupita Nyong’o, and Timothée Chalamet, also took to social media to react to their nominations and express their gratitude for the recognition.

Overall, the 2025 Oscar nominations have generated a lot of buzz and excitement among the entertainment industry, and fans can’t wait to see who will take home the coveted awards on the big night.

  • Cynthia Erivo reacts to director Jon M. Chu’s Oscar snub despite film getting 10 nominations | Hollywood

    Jan 25, 2025 08:37 PM IST

Cynthia Erivo was nominated in the Best Actress category for her work as Elphaba in Wicked. The actor has now questioned director Jon M. Chu’s snub.

Cynthia Erivo is basking in the massive success of her latest release Wicked, and her nomination for an Academy Award in the Best Actress category. The film scored an impressive 10 nods, including one for Best Picture. However, director Jon M. Chu was shut out in the Best Director category, a fact that is still not sitting well with the actor. In an interview with Variety at the Sundance Film Festival, the actor shared her thoughts on the snub. (Also read:

What Cynthia said about the snub

During the chat, when Cynthia was asked about Jon M. Chu not getting into the top five, the actor said: “I don’t know. I wish people understood just how much work has to go into creating a big, giant behemoth like Wicked. None of that can happen without his vision. It just isn’t possible. He is the who can see who is right for this, who cast us in these roles, who asked for nine million tulips, who says he wants to build a real set so it feels embedded in reality. It’s him! He says he wants the camera right in Elphaba’s face when she walks down the steps in the Ozdust Ballroom. There is a kind of vision that you have to have in order to be in control of something that could run away from you very quickly if you don’t know what to do.”

She went on to add, “I think he is an exquisite director. The people that he put in charge of every department! That also takes skill.”

    More details

The ones who were nominated in the Best Director category include Sean Baker for Anora, Coralie Fargeat for The Substance, Brady Corbet for The Brutalist, James Mangold for A Complete Unknown, and Jacques Audiard for Emilia Pérez.

Wicked, the first of two Universal Pictures films based on a Broadway prequel to The Wizard of Oz, stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo in the story of a misunderstood, green-skinned student of magic who becomes the Wicked Witch of the West. Wicked also stars Jonathan Bailey, Michelle Yeoh and Ethan Slater in pivotal roles.

Cynthia Erivo, the talented actress and singer known for her powerful performances, has expressed her disappointment over director Jon M. Chu’s Oscar snub despite their film receiving 10 nominations. The film, which was a critical and commercial success, was widely praised for its direction and storytelling.

In a recent interview, Erivo shared her thoughts on the snub, saying, “It’s disheartening to see such a talented director like Jon M. Chu overlooked by the Academy. His vision and passion brought this film to life, and he truly deserved to be recognized for his work.”

Erivo also praised Chu’s dedication to the project and his ability to create a vibrant and engaging world on screen. She expressed hope that Chu’s talent and hard work will be acknowledged in the future, and that he will continue to create groundbreaking films that resonate with audiences.

Despite the disappointment over Chu’s Oscar snub, Erivo remains grateful for the recognition the film has received, and is proud to have been a part of such a special project. She hopes that the film’s success will open doors for more diverse and inclusive stories to be told in Hollywood.

As fans continue to show their support for Chu and the film, it is clear that his impact on the industry is undeniable, and his talent will continue to shine in the years to come.

  • Charli xcx makes it a Brat Brits as she leads awards nominations for 2025 | Ents & Arts News

The nominations for this year’s Brit Awards have been revealed – and after Brat summer, now we have a Brat Brits.

The singer, whose sixth album was a viral hit last year, leads the nominations with five nods, including artist of the year, album of the year and song of the year for her hit Guess, with Billie Eilish.

Brat, which featured simple “slime green” artwork, was a huge hit for Charli xcx, whose real name is Charlotte Aitchison – inspiring everyone from presidential candidate Kamala Harris to the Collins Dictionary, which made it its word of the year for 2024.

In the Brits race, she is closely followed by Dua Lipa, who opened the 2024 ceremony and also headlined Glastonbury last year, who has four nominations – along with 2024 rising star winners The Last Dinner Party, and 2023 Mercury Prize winners Ezra Collective.

This year also sees a nomination for The Beatles – their first since 1977 – for the song Now And Then, which was finished by Sir Paul McCartney and Sir Ringo Starr with the help of audio restoration and released in November.

And more than 30 years since their last Brits nomination, The Cure are back with three – following the release of their 14th album, Songs Of A Lost World, in 2024.

Elsewhere, there are nominations for international artists such as Beyonce, Billie Eilish, Taylor Swift, Benson Boone, Chappell Roan, Kendrick Lamar and Sabrina Carpenter, as well as homegrown talent such as Central Cee, Fred again.., Sam Fender and former Little Mix star JADE.

It is also a great year for Myles Smith, who has already been named the winner of this year’s rising star award, which recognises up-and-coming musicians at the start of their career and is always announced ahead of the ceremony.

He is also up for three other gongs on the night – best new artist, song of the year – for Stargazing – and best pop act.

“Music has always been about connecting with people, and to see it resonate on this level is incredible,” Smith said of the rising star win.

The winners of the songwriter and producer of the year awards will also be announced ahead of the show in the coming weeks, organisers said.

Comedian Jack Whitehall is returning to host this year’s ceremony, which takes place at the O2 Arena in London on Saturday 1 March.

It will be his first time at the helm in four years, but fifth in total, after taking on the role for four consecutive years from 2018 to 2021.

Last year’s ceremony saw singer-songwriter Raye dominating, with a record number of wins.

  • Charli xcx leads male-dominated Brit awards nominations – with first Beatles nod since 1977 | Brit awards

Charli xcx leads this year’s Brit awards with five nominations for her 2024-dominating record Brat – the Guardian’s album of last year. With four nominations apiece, Dua Lipa, the Last Dinner Party, Ezra Collective and Myles Smith are close on the pop star’s trail.

xcx is nominated for album, artist and song of the year – the latter for the remix of Guess featuring Billie Eilish – and in the dance and pop genre categories.

But despite xcx painting the British music industry’s annual party a violent shade of lime green, women remain underrepresented in this year’s nominations, accounting for 34.7% of the 98 slots. Male acts comprise more than half, at 53%, with mixed-gender acts and collaborations – including the Last Dinner Party – making up the remaining 12.3%.

It’s a noteworthy year for some vintage groups: the Beatles’ AI-abetted Now and Then is up for best song, the group’s first nomination since the very first Brit awards in 1977. (Prior to becoming an annual fixture in 1983, the first Brits marked Queen Elizabeth II’s silver jubilee and 100 years since the invention of the phonograph, and honoured the preceding 25 years in music, seeing the Beatles earn three nominations.) And with three nominations for Songs of a Lost World – their first album since 2008 – the Cure score their first Brit nominations in more than 30 years in the categories for album of the year, group of the year and alt/rock act.

At the newer end of the scale, Stargazing singer Smith is this year’s Rising Star winner, tipped by the industry for major success, and is also nominated for new artist, song and pop act.

Ezra Collective: God Gave Me Feet for Dancing – video

The genre categories are assembled by the Brits voting academy and then voted for by members of the public via WhatsApp. Predictably, the category for hip-hop/grime/rap act features just one woman, Little Simz, alongside Central Cee, Dave, Ghetts and Stormzy.

London jazz act Ezra Collective may also be set for a breakthrough year. The five-piece released their third album, Dance, No One’s Watching, in September, after winning the 2023 Mercury prize for their second album. “From a youth club to the Brit awards and beyond,” they said in a statement.

Some may raise eyebrows at a group active since 2016 being up for new artist – alongside last year’s Mercury winners English Teacher, the Last Dinner Party, Myles Smith and former Brit School student Rachel Chinouriri – but the category parameters stipulate that acts must have had one Top 40 album or single in the eligibility period, but can’t have had a Top 10 album or more than one Top 10 single, nor have had prior nominations for best artist, group or album.

Despite middling reviews for her third album Radical Optimism – which spent just 19 weeks in the UK Top 100, compared to 220 for her 2020 record Future Nostalgia – Lipa is nominated for album of the year, artist of the year, song of the year (for Training Season) and pop act.

Last year’s major winner, Raye – who took home six prizes in 2024 – is up for R&B act. “I’m still processing the ridiculousness that was last year!” she said in a statement. “I’m excited to watch Charli xcx clean up this year, she just deserves it so much.”

Some nascent comebacks also feature: Sam Fender is up for artist of the year and alt/rock act, despite only having released two singles from his forthcoming third album, People Watching, due in February; and Jade, of the on-hiatus band Little Mix, is up for song of the year (for Angel of My Dreams) and pop act.

In the international categories, Taylor Swift, Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter and Billie Eilish have two nods apiece; Eilish also clocks a third nomination alongside xcx in the song category.

“Thank you so much for the nominations and the recognition of my art,” Roan said in a statement. “The UK has always shown me so much love and championed me through these past few years. It was one of the first places that Good Luck, Babe! blew up in, so this feels extra special.”

The awards for producer and songwriter of the year will be announced prior to the ceremony, which takes place on 1 March at the O2 Arena in London. Returning for the first time since 2021, Jack Whitehall reclaims hosting duties. No performers have yet been announced for the night.

  • ‘Wicked’ Oscar nominations: Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo and more

Let us be glad, let us be grateful — “Wicked” has earned 10 Oscar nominations.

Universal’s big-screen take on the blockbuster musical was recognized on Thursday morning for the performances of lead actress Cynthia Erivo and supporting actress Ariana Grande, costume design, production design, film editing, sound, makeup and hairstyling, visual effects and original score.

“Wicked” fans also can rejoicify that the movie was among the nominees in the category of best picture.

The Universal release has grossed $709 million at the global box office since it hit theaters last Thanksgiving, making it Hollywood’s highest-grossing film adaptation of a Broadway musical. It also set a record with its digital release on New Year’s Eve, collecting $26 million in its first day and $70 million in its first week.

This also means “Wicked” is among the Oscar-nominated adaptations of Broadway musicals — 10 of which went on to win best picture, the most recent being 2002’s “Chicago.”

“Wicked’s” Oscar nominations are the latest update in its awards haul, following its five Screen Actors Guild award nominations and its 11 Critics Choice Awards nominations. It also took the top prize from the National Board of Review. Earlier this month, the movie took home the Golden Globe for box office achievement out of its four nominations.

Set before Dorothy’s arrival in “The Wizard of Oz,” “Wicked” centers on the two women who become Glinda the Good Witch and the Wicked Witch of the West, and the change in their friendship when society pits them against each other. Jon M. Chu directs the two-part adaptation of the Stephen Schwartz stage musical phenomenon, based on Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel, L. Frank Baum’s 1900 fantasy novel and the 1939 film adaptation. The second film, titled “Wicked: For Good,” hits theaters on Nov. 21.

Rachel Sennott and Bowen Yang — the latter of whom is part of the “Wicked” cast — announced the Oscar nominations on Thursday morning.

The 97th Academy Awards will air live on ABC on Sunday, March 2, at 4 p.m. PT from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. Conan O’Brien will host the ceremony for the first time.

The nominations for the highly anticipated film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical “Wicked” have finally been announced, and fans are buzzing with excitement. Among the talented actors and actresses vying for an Oscar nod are powerhouse vocalists Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo.

Grande, known for her impressive vocal range and chart-topping hits, has been nominated for her role as Glinda the Good Witch. With her natural charisma and stunning stage presence, Grande is sure to bring a fresh and captivating take to the beloved character.

On the other hand, Erivo, who has been lauded for her powerhouse performances in films like “Harriet” and “The Outsider,” is nominated for her role as Elphaba, the misunderstood and complex Wicked Witch of the West. Erivo’s emotional depth and powerhouse vocals are sure to bring a new level of depth and complexity to the iconic character.

In addition to Grande and Erivo, other talented actors nominated for their roles in “Wicked” include Tony Award winner Cynthia Erivo, who plays the enigmatic and charming Wizard, and Emmy Award winner Billy Porter, who takes on the role of the conniving and manipulative Madame Morrible.

With such a star-studded cast and a beloved source material, “Wicked” is poised to be a major contender at the upcoming Oscars. Fans can’t wait to see these talented performers bring their A-game to the big screen and potentially take home the coveted golden statue.
