  • California city declares itself a ‘non-sanctuary’ city

Leaders in one Southern California city fed up with the state’s immigration policies have voted to become a “non-sanctuary” city and ignore the state’s sanctuary laws.

The resolution was approved by the Huntington Beach City Council on Tuesday night by a unanimous 7-0 vote. Mayor Pat Burns, who introduced the legislation, “Non-Sanctuary City for Illegal Immigration for the Prevention of Crime,” said the move was a matter of public safety.

“This is in the best interest of our community, Huntington Beach, to make sure that we utilize every facet of law enforcement we can to make it the best place to live,” Burns, a former law enforcement officer, said during Tuesday’s meeting alongside a small bust sculpture of President Donald Trump.

The move directs the city’s police officers to work with federal immigration authorities and notify immigration officials when they are about to release an illegal immigrant from jail.

The resolution “deliberately sidestep[s] the Governor’s efforts to subvert the good work of federal immigration authorities and to announce the city’s cooperation with the federal government, the Trump Administration and Border Czar Tom Homan’s work,” the city said in a news release.

Sanctuary cities prohibit their law enforcement personnel from cooperating with federal immigration authorities. The practice has come under scrutiny for shielding criminal illegal immigrants from being deported.

In addition to the resolution, Huntington Beach is suing the state over its sanctuary state laws, which it claims are unconstitutional.

Before the vote, Councilman Chad Williams chided state lawmakers for enacting policies to protect illegal immigrants, including those convicted of violent crimes.

“If we want to voluntarily cooperate with federal authorities to protect our community, that is absolutely our prerogative,” he said. “It’s just basic common sense. Why wouldn’t you want to use every tool available to keep your community safe?”

The resolution text mentions crimes committed by illegal immigrants on behalf of criminal gangs like MS-13 and Tren de Aragua, which gained widespread attention after its members allegedly terrorized residents at a Colorado apartment complex.

Tuesday’s vote came weeks after California Gov. Gavin Newsom proposed a “Trump-proof” legal defense fund of up to $25 million for California’s justice department. Trump has promised to target criminal illegal immigrants for deportation.

“In California in particular, fighting crime is difficult enough with the relaxed criminal laws and lack of enforcement. The State should get out of the way of local law enforcement, stop handcuffing our police officers and California’s cities, and get back to the business of protecting innocent citizens,” Huntington Beach City Attorney Michael Gates said in a press release.

The city of Modesto, California has made headlines by declaring itself a “non-sanctuary” city. This decision comes in response to the controversial sanctuary city policies that have been implemented in other parts of the state.

In a statement released by the city council, officials expressed their belief that sanctuary city policies pose a threat to public safety and national security. They cited concerns about potential crime and the strain on resources that can result from providing sanctuary to undocumented immigrants.

The decision to declare Modesto a non-sanctuary city has sparked debate and divided opinions within the community. Supporters of the move argue that it will help to uphold the rule of law and protect citizens from potential dangers. Huntington Beach, a city in Southern California, has made headlines by declaring itself a “non-sanctuary” city in the sanctuary state of California. The city council voted unanimously to reject the state’s sanctuary laws, which limit cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities.

This decision has sparked controversy and debate within the community, with some residents applauding the city’s stance on immigration enforcement, while others criticize it as being divisive and discriminatory.

Huntington Beach’s move to opt out of the sanctuary laws is seen as a bold statement against California’s progressive approach to immigration policy. The city’s defiance has also raised questions about the power dynamics between local and state governments when it comes to immigration enforcement.

As tensions continue to rise surrounding the issue of sanctuary cities, Huntington Beach’s decision serves as a reminder of the ongoing debate over immigration policy in the United States. Only time will tell how this move will impact the city and its relationship with the state of California.

  • Huntington Beach declares itself ‘non-sanctuary city’ amid Trump’s mass deportation plans

Huntington Beach has declared itself a “non-sanctuary city” in the wake of Donald Trump’s mass deportation plans.

On Tuesday, January 21, the City Council unanimously voted in favor of Huntington Beach Mayor Pat Burns’ initiative to give itself a “non-sanctuary” status.

The so-called status aims to offset some of California Governor Gavin Newsom’s actions and, in turn, support federal immigration authorities, President Donald Trump and Border Czar Tom Homan. The latest development out of Huntington Beach comes as the Trump Administration begins the early stages of mass deportations across the country.

“This new City policy and Declaration are common sense, supports our law enforcement, and advances public safety throughout the City. What the Governor is doing does not. Neither the Governor nor the State Legislature with the passage of laws may interfere with the City’s voluntary cooperation with federal authorities, nor cause or compel the City to violate federal laws such as Title 8 Section 1324 for the harboring of illegal immigrants,” Huntington Beach City Council wrote in a press release on Tuesday.

Huntington Beach’s vote comes just weeks after Newsom proposed a “Trump-proof” legal defense fund of up to $25 million for California’s justice department. Newsom’s introduced the move back in Nov. 2024 to protect California’s current policies on reproductive rights, climate change and immigration.

Newsom has since postponed meetings to “Trump-proof” California due to the ongoing wildfires.

Huntington Beach City Attorney Michael Gates accused the state of violating “federal immigration laws” by not complying with federal authorities’ plans for mass deportation.

“In California in particular, fighting crime is difficult enough with the relaxed criminal laws and lack of enforcement. The State should get out of the way of local law enforcement, stop handcuffing our police officers and California’s cities, and get back to the business of protecting innocent citizens. Emphatically, the State should not take a position of violating federal immigration laws or encouraging cities to violate federal immigration laws,” Gates said in a press release.

Huntington Beach, a coastal city in Southern California, has made headlines by declaring itself a “non-sanctuary city” in response to President Trump’s mass deportation plans.

The city council voted unanimously to reject the designation of being a sanctuary city, which typically means local law enforcement will not cooperate with federal immigration enforcement efforts. Instead, Huntington Beach has stated that it will fully cooperate with federal authorities in enforcing immigration laws.

This decision has sparked debate within the community, with some residents praising the city’s stance on upholding the rule of law, while others are concerned about the potential impact on immigrant communities.

Huntington Beach’s move comes amidst a nationwide debate over immigration policy and the role of local governments in enforcing federal laws. As the debate continues, it remains to be seen how other cities will respond to President Trump’s mass deportation plans.

  • Huntington Beach Mayor Pat Burns wants city to be declared ‘non-sanctuary city’

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (KABC) — Huntington Beach has been declared a “non-sanctuary city” after a unanimous vote by the City Council Tuesday evening.

In a 7-0 vote, the City Council approved the resolution brought by Mayor Pat Burns.

Burns says the move will help law enforcement follow federal immigration protocols under the new Trump administration.

California is currently a sanctuary state.

President Donald Trump’s executive order tackling the crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border has the full support of Burns.

Burns wants the city to back any efforts made by the Trump administration to enforce federal immigration law.

“We need every law enforcement effort, whenever called upon, whether it be fighting terrorists, whether it be fighting purse snatchers, or whatever it is, we have to have every law enforcement tool to best serve our citizens,” Burns said.

His resolution declare the city of Huntington Beach a “non-sanctuary city for illegal immigration for the prevention of crime.”

“It’s not meaning that our police are going to go out and look for, patrol and pull over people for being illegal,” Burns said. “That’s not our capacity. That’s a federal job.”

The mayor believes the state’s sanctuary law limits the cooperation between state and local law enforcement with federal immigration authorities.

“It’s taking out a link of a chain that we can’t afford,” Burns said. “We’re weakening the law enforcement efforts to the city to make it the safest place.”

Some residents like Jacquelyn Leyva say the resolution is divisive.

“I fully do not support Huntington Beach being a ‘non-sanctuary city,’” Leyva said. “It really disappoints me because we have separation of federal versus state laws for this reason because we need to protect our citizens within California and especially within Huntington Beach.”

    Burns disagrees.

He said his top priority is keeping residents safe.

“It’s putting Huntington Beach first,” he said. “It’s nothing to fight the state on. If it does, so be it, but it’s really to serve Huntington Beach.”

All seven elected members of the City Council are conservative, so the resolution was expected to pass.

Eyewitness News reached out to Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office for comment on the vote and hasn’t heard back.

Huntington Beach Mayor Pat Burns Calls for City to Be Declared ‘Non-Sanctuary City’

Huntington Beach Mayor Pat Burns has made it clear that he wants the city to be officially declared a ‘non-sanctuary city.’ In a recent statement, Burns expressed concerns about the safety and well-being of the community, citing the need for stricter enforcement of immigration laws.

Burns emphasized that the city’s resources should be focused on serving its residents and upholding the rule of law, rather than providing sanctuary for undocumented immigrants. He argued that declaring Huntington Beach a non-sanctuary city would send a strong message that the city is committed to protecting its citizens and upholding the law.

The issue of sanctuary cities has been a contentious one, with some arguing that they provide a safe haven for immigrants who are often vulnerable to deportation. However, supporters of non-sanctuary policies believe that they are necessary to ensure public safety and uphold the integrity of the legal system.

It remains to be seen how the city council will respond to Mayor Burns’ call for Huntington Beach to be declared a non-sanctuary city. In the meantime, residents and stakeholders are encouraged to voice their opinions and participate in the decision-making process.
