Winter Storm as well as rain for North Carolina this week
Impact Weather: Winter Storm concerns and significant rain with a flood threat
Winter Storm concerns, significant rain, and cold air
WELL, LAINEY, I KNOW THAT A LOT OF PEOPLE PROBABLY ENJOYED SOME ICE CREAM AND SOME COLD DRINKS WITH THOSE WARM TEMPERATURES, BUT I’M SURE THAT WE’RE GOING TO HAVE TO, UNFORTUNATELY, BRING BACK OUT THAT SOUP WITH THESE COLD TEMPERATURES THAT WE’RE ABOUT TO FEEL AGAIN. WE DEFINITELY GOT SOUP AND CHILLY WEATHER ON THE WAY FOR SURE, AS WE’VE GOT TEMPERATURES DROPPING QUITE A BIT WITH HIGHS ONLY IN THE 30S AND 40S. SO THOSE 60S THAT WE HAD OUT THERE TODAY, BOY, THEY WERE DEFINITELY SPECIAL. HOPEFULLY YOU ENJOYED IT THERE. THE SKIES OVER STUART VIRGINIA TODAY. GORGEOUS. NOW THAT IS ONE OF THE COMMUNITIES THAT IS ACTUALLY UNDER A WINTER STORM WATCH. THAT IS HOW MUCH THINGS ARE GOING TO CHANGE OVER THE NEXT 24 TO 36 HOURS. MUCH COLDER, 30S AND 40S FOR HIGHS THIS WEEK. WE ALSO HAVE A COUPLE OF WEATHER SYSTEMS THAT ARE GOING TO BRING INCHES OF RAIN OUR WAY BY THE END OF THIS WEEK, AND SOME WINTER STORM CONCERNS AS WELL, ESPECIALLY THE CLOSER YOU ARE TO THE VIRGINIA BORDER. TODAY’S HIGHS IN THE UPPER 60S 68 GREENSBORO, 69 IN WINSTON-SALEM, AND THAT 68 IN GREENSBORO WAS REAL CLOSE TO BREAKING THE RECORD FROM 1994 OF 69 DEGREES. WE ARE 39 RIGHT NOW IN GALAX. WE’RE IN THE MID 40S FROM WINSTON-SALEM TO GREENSBORO. THERE IS THE COLDER AIR THAT IS GOING TO BE MOVING IN BEHIND THIS AREA OF LOW PRESSURE. THAT’S BRINGING US SOME WET WEATHER RIGHT NOW. SO THERE ARE SOME SHOWERS OUT THERE. WE’LL SEE THEM OVER THE NEXT SEVERAL HOURS, AND THEN THOSE TWO WILL FADE AWAY BY EARLY TOMORROW. BUT SOME PRETTY SIGNIFICANT DOWNPOURS RIGHT NOW IN THE EASTERN PART OF FORSYTH COUNTY FROM KERNERSVILLE UP TOWARD BELEWS LAKE, ALSO ALONG HIGHWAY 220, AND THEN WORKING YOUR WAY OVER TOWARD REIDSVILLE AND RUFFIN. SOME HEAVIER RAIN. WE ALSO HAVE SOME POCKETS OF MODERATE TO HEAVY RAIN FROM LEXINGTON DOWN TOWARD HIGH ROCK LAKE. AGAIN, THIS IS GOING TO BE MOVING THROUGH IN THE NEXT FEW HOURS. BY TOMORROW MORNING. WE HAVE A LOT OF CLOUDS ARE GOING TO HANG ON TO A SMALL RAIN CHANCE IN OUR SOUTHEASTERN TRIAD COMMUNITIES JUST IN THE MORNING. THEN THE CLOUDS WILL THIN OUT A LITTLE BIT BY LUNCHTIME, AND THEN BY AFTERNOON. WE ARE MOSTLY SUNNY ACROSS THE AREA AND WE ARE DEFINITELY COOLER. AND WE WILL HAVE GOTTEN AT LEAST A LITTLE BIT OF RAIN ON THE ORDER OF ABOUT A 10TH OF AN INCH OR SO. THERE’S THAT SMALL RAIN CHANCE IN THE MORNING 38 DEGREES TO START. WE’RE UP TO 48 TOMORROW AFTERNOON. A COOL BREEZE, DECREASING CLOUDS, AND THIS IS CLOSER TO NORMAL WITH A HIGH NEAR 50 IN THE FOOTHILLS. MORNING TEMPERATURES IN THE UPPER 30S. IT’S COOLER TOMORROW IN THE MOUNTAINS AS WELL, WITH A HIGH OF 45 TOMORROW AFTERNOON. WE’VE GOT PLENTY OF COLD AIR THAT NOW IS GOING TO BE SETTLING SOUTHWARD, AND THEN WE’RE JUST GOING TO TRACK THESE WAVES OF MOISTURE THAT WILL WORK THEIR WAY ALONG THE DEEP SOUTH AND THE GULF COAST. SO WE’VE GOT REAL HIGH RAIN CHANCES FOR TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY. SOME OF THIS IS GOING TO BE WINTRY AS WELL. OUR FORECAST HIGHS HAVE US ONLY AT 35 ON TUESDAY. UPPER 30S, CLOSE TO 40 ON WEDNESDAY. WE DO HAVE A WINTER STORM WATCH THAT HAS BEEN ISSUED. THIS WILL LIKELY BE UPGRADED TO A WINTER STORM WARNING TOMORROW. IT’S NOT UNTIL TOMORROW NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY MORNING THAT WE ANTICIPATE A MIXTURE OF SNOW, AREA ESPECIALLY. THAT’S WHY WE’VE GOT THAT WINTER STORM. WATCH OUT ALREADY FOR THOSE COMMUNITIES. AND YES, THAT MEANS WE COULD HAVE SOME SNOW AND SLEET. BUT ALSO ICE IS A CONCERN WITH THIS STORM. THERE MIGHT EVEN BE A TOUCH OF WINTRY WEATHER, AT LEAST INITIALLY. TUESDAY, ESPECIALLY ACROSS THE TRIAD NORTH OF I-85. SO THAT’S SOMETHING WE’RE GOING TO REALLY BE WATCHING CLOSELY AS TEMPERATURES ARE GOING TO BE VERY CLOSE TO FREEZING FOR MOST OF THE DAY. TYPICALLY, WHEN WE GET THIS SCENARIO, IT IS MAINLY THE FOOTHILLS AND THE MOUNTAINS THAT DO GET THE WINTRY WEATHER WITH THIS. BUT AGAIN, SOMETHING WORTH WATCHING FOR SURE, ESPECIALLY AS THOSE MORNING TEMPERATURES IN THE TRIAD ARE GOING TO BE VERY CLOSE TO FREEZING TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY. BY THE TIME VALENTINE’S DAY GETS HERE, IT LOOKS LIKE IT MIGHT BE A LITTLE BIT DRIER, BUT THAT IS SHORT LIVED WITH MORE WET WEATHER HEADING INTO THE WEEKEND FROM LEXINGTON TO LEWISVILLE.

What the West Is Learning About North Korean Troops Fighting for Russia
- North Korean troops deployed to Russia have proven capable and fierce.
- Russia is using them in high-cost “human wave” assaults.
- The conflict is an opportunity for North Korea to learn modern warfare tactics and adapt.
North Korea’s soldiers are relentless, almost fanatical, in the face of death. They’re determined and capable in battle, even in an unfamiliar fight, and their tactics are outdated but brutal.
That’s what the West has learned watching Kim Jong Un’s army in action after Russian President Vladimir Putin turned to the North Korean leader to supply fighters for his war on Ukraine.
Pyongyang deployed 11,000 men to Kursk in November disguised as Russian soldiers and carrying fake IDs. These troops are largely special operations forces, meaning they are more ardent in their beliefs and better trained than other units.
Russia has been pushing the North Koreans headlong into bloody assaults. The costs are high, but Kim’s army is learning an important lesson in return: how to fight a modern war.
North Korea sent some of its best soldiers

This war is North Korea’s largest military deployment to a foreign conflict in its almost 80-year history. To determine what the West is learning from this moment, Business Insider spoke to experts who have been closely following North Korea’s performance, examined publicly released intelligence, and reviewed Ukrainians’ observations.
Ukrainian and South Korean intelligence services have said that many of the troops that deployed to Russia are some of Pyongyang’s best, drawn from the 11th Corps, also known as the Storm Corps. The unit is trained in infiltration, infrastructure sabotage, and assassinations.
Ukraine’s top general, Oleksandr Syrsky, has said the North Korean troops are “highly motivated, well-trained,” and “brave.” And the Pentagon said this month that “these are relatively well-disciplined, competent forces” that are by all accounts “capable.”
Some Ukrainian soldiers have relayed their experiences to Western media, describing the troops as fast and nimble, good shots, and seemingly fearless as they rush into battle despite heavy losses. North Korean soldiers have also been found carrying diaries with written dedications to Kim and their country.
“They, as individuals, are more skilled as soldiers, more disciplined as soldiers, more willing to fight as soldiers than some sources had presumed when they were first being sent there,” said Joseph Bermudez, an expert on North Korea’s armed forces at the Center for International and Strategic Studies.

North Korea’s culture is driven by a martial philosophy that celebrates hard military power, and it maintains one of the world’s largest standing armies with around 1.2 million soldiers.
The country’s direct entry into the war has complicated the situation for the Ukrainians, particularly in Russia’s Kursk region where Ukraine is struggling to hold captured ground. Ukraine has lost roughly half of the territory it once held inside Russia, and the relentless human wave attacks and brutal assaults have worn down Ukraine’s already strained defenses, depriving Kyiv’s forces of time to rest and brace for further attacks.
The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff said last month that North Korea may be planning to deploy additional forces and military equipment to Russia.
Pyongyang has denied sending troops to Russia, and Kyiv has said Russian and North Korean forces attempt to remove dead North Korean soldiers from the battlefield or even burn the faces of dead North Koreans to make them difficult to identify.

Russia has been sending the North Korean forces into very high-casualty front-line assaults. Biden’s White House said late last month that “it is clear that Russian and North Korean military leaders are treating these troops as expendable and ordering them on hopeless assaults against Ukrainian defenses.”
A White House spokesperson previously described the North Koreans as “highly indoctrinated, pushing attacks even when it is clear that those attacks are futile.”
The Trump administration did not respond to a request for comment on its assessment of North Korean forces fighting in Russia.
Ukraine’s Special Operation Forces said Friday the North Koreans fighting for Russia had not been seen in the Kursk area for around three weeks and had likely been withdrawn because of heavy combat losses. BI was unable to independently confirm these details.

On the front lines, Ukrainian soldiers have said that the North Koreans are a capable fighting force that is adept at neutralizing drones. The soldiers are ruthlessly tough and determined, relentlessly pushing forward in “human wave” assaults, using fellow soldiers as bait, and casting aside armor for faster infantry movements. And they refuse to surrender, often opting to kill themselves with a grenade or bullet rather than be captured.
This is a defining element of the North Korean special operations training: Soldiers are trained to follow orders aggressively, even if they suspect it will cost them their lives. If they disobey orders or fail without sacrifice, their families could suffer the consequences, Bermudez said.
North Korea is learning lessons in modern warfare

North Korean forces have suffered heavy losses fighting for Russia, per Western intelligence. Despite training with Moscow on infantry tactics, flying drones, artillery, and trench-clearing operations, the troops are still new to this war.
The soldiers “have been observed engaging in light infantry operations of a Second World War vintage — one man draws out enemy fire (in this case, drones) to locate a target, and others attempt to neutralize said target,” said Michael Madden, a Stimson Center Korea expert. They have not prepared for a mechanized battlefield like Ukraine’s, filled with armored vehicles and tanks.
“They’ve been trained to fight a war on the Korean Peninsula,” Bermudez said, and while North Korea has watched various armed conflicts closely over the decades, its forces are now getting a real taste for it on a battlefield and in an environment they haven’t been prepping for.
In the short term, that could have devastating consequences for the North Korean forces fighting for the Russians. The Institute for the Study of War think tank has said that the entire 11,000-man contingent of North Korean forces could be killed or wounded in action by April if the current casualty rate continues. The latest estimates put losses at about 4,000.
Time will tell how North Korea implements what it’s learned from the Ukraine war. Alexander NEMENOV / AFP
North Korea may consider these sacrifices worth it — if not for the Russian cause, then for what it learns in return.
“It is a dark version of the concept of ‘you learn by doing,’” Madden said, while noting it’s still early. “We will need further incidents and engagements to make more sound observations as to whether they are adjusting their tactics given the state of play in Russia and Ukraine.”
But there’s no doubt they’re learning, acquiring knowledge critical for future conflicts that will make North Korea a more challenging combat force in East Asia. They’re seeing the Ukrainian use of US- and Western-provided weapons systems, such as HIMARS and Abrams, for example, and how the Russians have adapted to them.
“They’re bringing these lessons home in the hardest way possible: by bleeding for them,” Bermudez said.
As tensions continue to rise between Russia and Ukraine, a new and unexpected player has entered the battlefield: North Korean troops fighting for Russia. This revelation has left many in the West shocked and intrigued, as North Korea is typically known for its isolationist policies and secretive military.Reports have emerged of North Korean soldiers being deployed to Ukraine to assist Russian forces in the ongoing conflict. While the exact number of troops involved is unknown, it is clear that North Korea is playing a role in the conflict that goes beyond mere diplomatic support.
This development has raised a number of questions in the West. How did North Korean troops end up fighting in Ukraine? What does this say about the relationship between North Korea and Russia? And perhaps most importantly, what does this mean for the future of the conflict in Ukraine?
As the situation continues to unfold, it is clear that the West has much to learn about the role of North Korean troops in the conflict. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

#West #Learning #North #Korean #Troops #Fighting #RussiaCooper Flagg leads Duke to blowout win over rival North Carolina
DURHAM, N.C. — In his first taste of the Duke–North Carolina rivalry, Cooper Flagg delivered arguably the most complete performance of his career to lead the Blue Devils to a dominant 87-70 victory Saturday night.
Flagg scored or assisted on each of Duke’s first six baskets as the Blue Devils raced to an early lead, and his final line — 21 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocked shots — proved to be an emphatic debut in one of the country’s great rivalries. It was also the latest example that, as Duke coach Jon Scheyer said, Flagg is a basketball “savant.”
“It might be [my best college game],” Flagg said, “but for me, I’m just trying to make the right plays. Four of the first six baskets I assisted. That’s huge for me to find my teammates and make plays for them.”
The stellar performance still fell short of what Flagg might have done, Scheyer said. Flagg played all but the final 47 seconds of the second half, and Scheyer thought his star freshman was worn down toward the end, when North Carolina cut Duke’s lead from 32 with 9:04 to play to 16 at the 2:59 mark.
Flagg said he was angry with his — and Duke’s — performance in that late stretch, despite the lopsided win.
“It was a little bit of me being tired and making some dumb mistakes at the end,” Flagg said. “Being soft at the end kind of played into that.”
Scheyer took responsibility for Flagg’s slow finish but added it’s rare to post such gaudy numbers and still find room for criticism.
“He almost had a triple-double, and he wasn’t quite himself [at the end],” Scheyer said. “But besides that segment, he was just in control the entire game. He makes everybody better around him, and it’s a heck of a thing to have 21, 8 and 7 and you think he could’ve done more.”
Flagg’s ability to involve teammates was at the forefront of Saturday’s win. In the first five minutes, he racked up four assists, two steals and a rebound.
Fellow Duke freshman Kon Knueppel finished with a game-high 22 points and five assists. Flagg and Knueppel are the first teammates to each tally 20 points and five assists in a game in this rivalry in 15 years. The last duo was Duke’s Scheyer and Nolan Smith.
“They absolutely feed off each other,” Scheyer said. “It starts with their competitiveness. They play both sides of the ball. They have high-level feel. … Add in their skill and versatility. Kon’s posting and shooting and pick-and-roll. And everybody knows, Cooper’s already doing everything. They have a great thing. There’s a lot of maturity with both of them.”
Despite that maturity, this was still their first time experiencing the rivalry. As a recruit, Flagg sat behind the Duke bench last season as the Tar Heels mustered an 84-79 win in Cameron Indoor Stadium. North Carolina players chirped at Duke’s squad throughout, and Flagg said he remembered the Tar Heels taunting the Cameron Crazies after it was over, which he said added a bit of motivation this time.
Flagg admitted to some pregame nerves in an environment he described as “really loud and hot,” but he said once the game tipped off, he was locked on the action.
“You could definitely feel a different energy tonight,” Flagg said. “For us, it’s just another game. We came out and executed our game plan, did what we were trying to do, and came out with the win. It’s another game, and we’re chasing a big mission this year.”
In a highly anticipated matchup between bitter rivals Duke and North Carolina, Cooper Flagg proved to be the difference maker as he led Duke to a dominant blowout win. From the opening tip-off, Flagg set the tone with his aggressive play on both ends of the court. His ability to drive to the basket and finish with authority, as well as his tenacious defense, kept North Carolina on their heels throughout the game.
Flagg’s leadership and scoring prowess were on full display as he poured in a game-high 30 points, showcasing his versatile skill set and ability to take over a game when his team needed him most.
Not only did Flagg shine individually, but he also got his teammates involved, creating scoring opportunities for his fellow Blue Devils and helping to build a commanding lead that North Carolina couldn’t overcome.
By the final buzzer, Duke had secured a resounding victory over their rivals, with Flagg’s stellar performance leaving a lasting impression on all who witnessed his dominance on the court.
With Flagg leading the way, Duke looks poised to make a deep run in the postseason, and their rivals will surely be on notice as they continue to showcase their talent and determination to succeed.

North Korean troops pulled back from frontline after heavy losses, Ukrainian officials say
Kyiv, Ukraine
CNN
—
North Korean troops have not been seen on the frontlines in Russia’s Kursk region for several weeks, a Ukrainian military official said Friday, amid reports of mass casualties among Pyongyang’s forces.
“The presence of DPRK troops has not been observed for about three weeks, and they were probably forced to withdraw after suffering heavy losses,” a spokesperson for the Ukrainian military’s Special Operations Forces, Colonel Oleksandr Kindratenko, told CNN.
It follows reports that some North Korean units have been pulled back from the frontlines after significant losses, according to Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak.
About 12,000 North Korean soldiers have been sent to Russia, according to Ukrainian officials and Western intelligence reports, which say around 4,000 those troops have been killed or injured.
North Korean troops have been deployed to Kursk since at least November to repel Ukraine’s incursion in the southern Russian border region.
“We are still in the Kursk region… the Russian forces were not enough to push us out,” Ukrainian President Zelensky said last week at a speech in Davos, Switzerland. Zelensky noted that there were 60,000 Russian troops in Kursk and 12,000 North Koreans.
Zelensky also said that one-third of those North Korean troops had been killed.
CNN has previously reported on the brutal and near-suicidal tactics of North Korean soldiers, who in some cases have detonated grenades rather than be captured by Ukrainian forces and have written pledges of allegiance on the battlefield to North Korea’s Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un.
A commander with the 6th Special Operations Forces regiment, who did not want to give his name for security reasons, told CNN that while the North Korean soldiers are “all young, trained, hardy fighters,” they would have not previously faced drones in combat. “They are prepared for the realities of war in 1980 at best,” he said.
Another battalion serviceman told CNN the North Koreans had shown good marksmanship when shooting down drones from about a 100-meter distance, suggesting a high level of training in North Korea.
However, Russia appears to be using the troops as foot soldiers, using them to carry out mass ground assaults despite major losses in Kursk.
Ukraine has recently made advancements in Kursk, according to a battlefield update from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), a DC-based think-tank, on January 26. Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry said earlier this week that Russian forces recaptured the Kursk region village of Nikolayevo-Daryino, which lies on the Russia-Ukraine border.
Neither Moscow nor Pyongyang have officially acknowledged the presence of North Korean troops in Russia.
Last year, months before the deployment of North Koreans to Russia, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Russia’s President Vladimir Putin signed a landmark defense pact and pledged to use all available means to provide immediate military assistance in the event the other is attacked.
The pact is the most significant agreement signed by Russia and North Korea in decades and has been viewed as something of a revival of their 1961 Cold War-era mutual defense pledge.
CNN’s Nick Paton Walsh, Rebecca Wright, Daria Tarasova-Markina, Brice Laine and Helen Regan contributed to this report.
In a recent announcement, Ukrainian officials revealed that North Korean troops have been forced to pull back from the frontline after sustaining heavy losses in recent clashes. The conflict, which has been ongoing for several weeks, has reportedly resulted in significant casualties on both sides. The withdrawal of North Korean troops from the frontline is seen as a significant development in the conflict, with Ukrainian forces now gaining ground in the region. However, officials caution that the situation remains fluid and that further fighting is likely to occur in the coming days.
The international community has been closely monitoring the situation in Ukraine, with fears of a wider conflict breaking out in the region. Diplomatic efforts are underway to try and de-escalate the situation and prevent further bloodshed.
As the situation continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how the conflict will play out and what the repercussions will be for both Ukraine and North Korea. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

“It is a dark version of the concept of ‘you learn by doing,’” Madden said, noting that it’s still early. “We will need further incidents and engagements to make more sound observations as to whether they are adjusting their tactics given the state of play in Russia and Ukraine.”
But there is no doubt they’re learning, acquiring knowledge critical for future conflicts that will make North Korea a more challenging combat force in East Asia. They’re seeing the Ukrainian use of US- and Western-provided weapons systems, such as HIMARS and Abrams, for example, and how the Russians have adapted to them.
“They’re bringing these lessons home in the hardest way possible: by bleeding for them,” Bermudez said.

The CBS Sports college basketball power rankings is topped once again by the Duke Blue Devils as they enter Saturday’s rivalry game vs. North Carolina with the longest active winning streak in college basketball. Duke is No. 1 — yes, to be clear, ahead of AP-ranked No. 1 Auburn — for a second consecutive week in the power rankings after wins over Wake Forest and NC State that moved it to 10-0 in ACC play and 18-2 on the season.
Meanwhile Auburn, whose only loss on the season remains to Duke, is once again at No. 2 this week after a close win at home over Tennessee and a cushy road win over LSU.
The margin is thin between the two, to be sure. Gary Parrish has Auburn at No. 1 in his daily Top 25 (And 1). I think reasonable minds can come to that conclusion given Auburn’s overwhelmingly great résumé. But the power rankings are equal parts resume-based and vibes-based, with extra weight for the latter, because y’know what? I make the rules here. And the vibes are immaculate around Duke right now. Even if it doesn’t have the same number of Quad 1 wins as Auburn, this team is playing at a high level and improving with each passing game.
College basketball grades: Kentucky earns ‘A+’, Kansas gets ‘C’ in report card heading into weekend

That’s why Duke is edging Auburn.
For now.
There’s plenty at stake in this week’s power rankings not just at the top with Duke and Auburn but with a handful of other teams. Michigan State and Houston are still undefeated in conference play and are once again on the rise in the ranks below. Arizona reappeared after a time away thanks to a huge OT win over top-five Iowa State. And Florida is back into the top five this week thanks to a shakeup at the top.
There’s much to discuss and dissect as we introduce the power rankings leading into the weekend. Let’s get to it.
College Basketball Power Rankings
As the college basketball season heats up, Duke University is emerging as the nation’s hottest team. With a string of impressive wins and a talented roster led by star players such as Paolo Banchero and AJ Griffin, the Blue Devils are making a strong case for the top spot in the rankings.Their recent victory over a top-ranked opponent has solidified their status as a force to be reckoned with in the highly competitive landscape of college basketball. As they prepare to face off against their bitter rivals, the North Carolina Tar Heels, in a highly anticipated matchup, all eyes will be on Duke to see if they can continue their winning streak and further solidify their place at the top of the rankings.
With the intensity and excitement of a classic rivalry game on the horizon, Duke’s performance in this matchup will be a true test of their strength and resilience. Can they continue their dominance and come out on top against their fierce opponents, or will North Carolina pull off an upset and shake up the rankings once again?
Regardless of the outcome, one thing is certain – the Duke Blue Devils are a team to watch this season, and their impressive run of form has firmly established them as one of the top contenders in college basketball. Stay tuned as the drama unfolds and the battle for supremacy continues on the hardwood.

The Kinston, N.C., native added a team-best two blocks against the Blue Devils and ranks second on the team with 20 blocks this season. Styles is the first NC State player other than Marcus Hill or Jayden Taylor to lead the team in scoring since Ben Middlebrooks had a team-best 14 points at Kansas on Dec. 14.
– Freshman Trey Parker had the best game of his young career, scoring a career-best 15 points. The Fayetteville, N.C., native made his first six shots from the field as it was just his second double-digit scoring game of the season with the other being a 13-point effort against Coastal Carolina back on Nov. 13.
– Brandon Huntley-Hatfield reached double figures for the first time since the Dec. 31 game at Virginia with 10 points at Duke. The Louisville transfer scored in double figures in the first six games of the season for NC State, but has only scored in double figures four times since then.

In nine conference games, Hill has upped his average to 14.1 points per game. He also leads the team in conference action in rebounding, averaging 5.2 per game and has nearly a 3-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio (19-to-7).
Saturday Storylines
– Ben Middlebrooks vs. his former school. Saturday marks Middlebrooks second career game against Clemson. The Fort Lauderdale, Fla., native started his collegiate career at Clemson, playing two seasons with the Tigers. He transferred to NC State prior to the start of the 2023-24. Last season, Middlebrooks had four points, one steal and one rebound in 21 minutes in the Pack’s last second win at Clemson. In his three-year collegiate career, Middlebrooks has always been on the winning side when Clemson and NC State have played each other.
– Ben Middlebrooks ranks second in the ACC in blocks at 1.6 per game. The Fort Lauderdale, Fla., native has 31 blocks this season which already mark the most he’s ever had in a single season. Coming into this season, Middlebrooks had multiple blocked shots in nine of 101 career games, but has already had eight multiple block games this season.
– Middlebrooks (31 blocks/21 steals) and Clemson’s Viktor Lakhin (34 blocks/21 steals) are two of just three players in the ACC that have over 30 blocks and 20 steals this season. Florida State’s Taylor Bol Bowen (30 blocks/24 steals) is the other player in the conference that has accumulated those stats.
Saturday’s game will be a matchup of the top-two teams in the ACC in turnover margin. NC State leads the ACC with a +3.6 turnover margin (25th in the NCAA) while Clemson is right behind the Pack in second at +3.0 (42nd in the NCAA).
– Pack is used to playing close ones in conference action. Eight of the Pack’s nine ACC games have been a one-possession game in the final five minutes of regulation. NC State started league play off by beating Florida State in overtime, its other win is a one-point win over Notre Dame. Four of its six losses have also come down to the last possession. NC State lost to UNC by two and at Virginia, at Virginia Tech and home against Cal by three. Last Saturday’s loss to SMU didn’t come down to the last possession, but the Pack had the ball down by four with under 30 seconds to play and on Monday night at Duke, NC State trailed 63-62 with 4:40 to play.
– One of NC State’s calling cards in the Kevin Keatts era is turning opponent’s turnovers into points. In the Pack’s nine wins this season, it is averaging 19.3 points per game off opponents turnovers and has outscored the opponents in points off turnovers by 102 points. In the Pack’s 11 losses it averages just 12.1 points off opponent turnovers and has outscored by its opponents in points off turnovers by just 21 points (133-to-112).

Clemson led 77-73 with one minute to play when Michael O’Connell drove the lane and laid it in to cut the deficit in half with 50 seconds to play. On the ensuing possession, Mohamed Diarra stole the ball and was fouled. He made the front end of a one-and-one, missed the second, but on the rebound, NC State forced a jump ball, giving the ball back to the Pack and setting Horne up for his game-winning bucket. Cormac Ryan led North Carolina with 31 points, a career-high. He also closed out the game with two clinching free throws with 4.7 seconds left.

Krzyzewskiville
ABC11 stopped by Krzyzewskiville on Tuesday night, where hundreds of students were out camping ahead of the big game. In total, there are roughly 130 tents in K-Ville this year, housing about 1,500 students.
“One hundred percent worth it. I would do it again and again. If I could do this for the rest of my life, I’d be here every year doing this,” said Erika Pietrzak, a Duke senior camping for the fourth time.
The decked-out tents have become a fixture on Duke’s campus this time of year since the tradition started in the 1980s.
“It’s been a great experience. I get to hang out with my buddies in the tent. You know, sometimes it gets cold, but it’s a really fun time,” said Kiran Pathy, a sophomore camping for the first time.
While some students brave the elements for their tickets, others like Head Line Monitor Oliver Hess oversee the craziness in Krzyzewskiville.
“It’s a whole meritocracy-based system. We want the craziest of the Cameron crazies to be in the front row, to be the loudest, to show their enthusiasm the most,” Hess said.
That includes surprise checks at all hours of the night – and during the day – to make sure each tent has residents present.
ABC11’s Sean Coffey, Kate Rogerson, Tom George, and ESPN contributed to this report.
