  • Rain, snow to return to Pacific Northwest after weeks of dryness

Rounds of rain and snow will move into the Northwest later this week and could cause travel trouble typical for this time of year, AccuWeather meteorologists say.

On the heels of Southern California receiving its first significant rain and mountain snow of the winter, some rain and snow will move into the Northwest later this week.

“After more than two weeks of mainly dry weather for places in the Pacific Northwest, such as Seattle, and Portland and Eugene, Oregon, a wind shift from the Pacific will break through and deliver at least one front and its moisture into the Northwest beginning on Thursday night and Friday,” AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Dave Houk said.

Seattle’s January rainfall has been about 20% of the historical average, which is 5.78 inches. Meanwhile, Portland has picked up just over 2 inches of rain, compared to a historical average of about 5 inches for the month.

As is often the case when a front or full-fledged storm moves onshore from the Pacific, freezing levels will rise and then fall as warm and cold air exchange.

“Snow levels will be lowering Friday and Friday night with slow and slippery travel through Snoqualmie Pass on I-90,” Houk said.

It will get chilly enough for snow to fall near sea level by Saturday morning, but not much moisture will be left over by that time. Still, there could be enough lingering to produce wet snow showers in western Washington and northwestern Oregon on Saturday. “How much moisture is left behind will determine if there will be a small, slushy accumulation or not along the I-5 corridor,” Houk said.

This weekend, there will most likely be a dry zone to the immediate east of the Cascades. Still, some rain and wet snow can fall in eastern parts of Washington and Oregon on Saturday night and Sunday.

While there will not be any major storms that immediately follow the front into the Northwest later this weekend to next week, there will be a weak but slow-moving storm that can bring more showers.

Snow levels will be near sea level from Sunday to Tuesday in the coastal Northwest, and it is possible there can be a little accumulation around Seattle during that time, Houk explained.

“The same slow-moving storm off the coast next week will also continue to direct moisture into the northern half of California and southern Oregon where flooding could evolve in places that get several pulses of heavy rain,” Houk said.

After weeks of unseasonably dry weather, the Pacific Northwest is set to see a return of rain and snow in the coming days. The region has been experiencing unusually warm temperatures and clear skies, but that is about to change as a series of weather systems move in from the Pacific Ocean.

The return of precipitation will be a welcome sight for many in the region, especially as drought conditions have been worsening in recent weeks. The rain and snow will help to replenish water supplies and provide much-needed relief for farmers and residents alike.

While some may be disappointed to see the end of the dry spell, the return of more typical Pacific Northwest weather is a reminder of the region’s natural beauty and diversity. So, grab your umbrellas and snow boots, and get ready for some much-needed moisture in the coming days! #PacificNorthwest #RainAndSnow #WeatherUpdate

After a long night of power outages, residents on Columbus’ Northwest Side can finally breathe a sigh of relief as American Electric Power (AEP) begins the process of restoring electricity to homes and businesses in the area.

  • Turkey ski hotel fire: 66 killed in resort in northwest

    Istanbul, Turkey
    CNN
     —

Dozens of people were killed after a fire ripped through a ski resort hotel in northwestern Turkey on Tuesday, forcing desperate holidaymakers to leap from windows to escape from the flames and smoke.

At least 66 people were killed and 51 injured following the early morning blaze at a hotel in the Kartalkaya resort in Bolu province, according to Turkey’s Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya.

“We are in deep pain. We have unfortunately lost 66 lives in the fire that broke out at this hotel,” Yerlikaya told reporters on Tuesday.

Some desperate holiday goers tried to jump out of windows in order to escape, officials said, as flames licked the top floors of the facility. Footage of the aftermath showed wreaths of gray smoke swirling around the charred building.

The 12-story hotel was built onto a rock face, complicating efforts to extinguish the flames. Eyewitnesses recalled the scent of burning, with guests’ screams filling the upper floors of the hotel.

“It was so bad. Everybody was jumping out of the windows with the fear of death and people were so ashamed as there were no fire-extinguishers around,” one eyewitness told CNN affiliate CNN Turk.

“We could not get water to people. Ambulances and fire trucks came really late, and people did not know what to do,” the eyewitness added.

Firefighters work to extinguish the fire at the hotel in Kartalkaya.

The resort is a popular destination for holiday-makers in the winter, especially during school holidays, which run from January until the first week of February. The timing of the blaze fell in the school holidays, Reuters reported, when people from Istanbul and Ankara travel to the Bolu mountains to ski.

There were around 234 guests staying at the hotel, Governor Abdulaziz Aydin told the state-run Anadolu Agency. Two of the victims died after jumping out of the building “in a panic,” Aydin said.

At least 30 fire trucks and 28 ambulances were sent to the site, Aydin’s office said. According to Yerlikaya, authorities mobilized 267 emergency personnel to respond to the blaze. Authorities evacuated other hotels at the resort as a precautionary measure, and guests were housed in hotels around Bolu.

A number of videos, some shared on social media and others broadcast by Turkish TV stations, showed flames coming out of the top floors of the hotel. Some people were seen using tied bed sheets to try to escape the blaze.

This is a developing story and will be updated.

Yesterday, tragedy struck in Turkey as a ski hotel in the northwest region went up in flames, claiming the lives of 66 people. The incident occurred in a popular resort area, leaving many families devastated by the loss of their loved ones.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire, but it is believed to have started in the early hours of the morning. The hotel was reportedly at full capacity, with guests from all over the world enjoying the winter sports and beautiful scenery.

Rescue teams worked tirelessly to evacuate the guests and extinguish the flames, but unfortunately, the fire spread rapidly, trapping many inside. The death toll continues to rise as rescuers sift through the debris and search for survivors.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families during this difficult time. We hope that the authorities can determine the cause of the fire and prevent such a tragedy from happening again in the future.

  • Northwest Notes: Edwards, Hartenstein, Clingan, Jokic

Northwest Notes: Edwards, Hartenstein, Clingan, Jokic

With Karl-Anthony Towns no longer in Minnesota, rising Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards is going through some growing pains this year, expressing frustration about receiving so much attention from opposing defenses, writes Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic.

Edwards admitted that he’s sometimes not sure how to handle traps and double-teams and admitted that it’s “not fun” to have his scoring opportunities limited and the ball taken out of his hands. As Krawczynski details, Edwards’ “trademark spirit” seems to be lacking as of late, and it didn’t help matters that fellow stars Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jayson Tatum has big games in wins over Minnesota this week.

“He’s doing a really good job. It’s tough,” teammate Julius Randle said. “I know it’s frustrating. But that’s just the player that he is. He’s that special that nobody is going to guard him straight up. We gotta continue to try to help him out.”

As Krawczynski points out, players like Gilgeous-Alexander and Tatum are a few years ahead of Edwards on the developmental curve, so there’s plenty of optimism that the Timberwolves guard will eventually figure out how best to attack defenses by balancing his scoring and play-making.

“I think everybody has been playing good on my team besides me,” Edwards said. “I got to figure it out, figure out ways to help them. They have been hitting shots lately. I got to figure out a way to get myself involved in the offense by not letting the double-team take me out. I’ll figure it out.”

Here’s more from around the Northwest:

    • The Knicks tried their best to retain Isaiah Hartenstein over the summer, but the veteran center believes the outcome of his free agency – he signed with the Thunder, while New York replaced him by trading for Towns – has been “perfect” for both sides, per Stefan Bondy of The New York Post. “I’m in a situation here (in OKC) where it’s going really good. They got a great center, one of the best centers in the league,” Hartenstein said before facing his old team on Friday. “So I think for both parties it was perfect. Knowing (Knicks president of basketball operations) Leon Rose, he’ll always find something. He’s been doing a great job, so he made the right adjustment.”
    • Besides helping to anchor the defense, Hartenstein has added a new dynamic to the Thunder‘s offense with his passing, as Rylan Stiles of SI.com outlines.
    • Speaking to Mark Medina of Sportskeeda, Trail Blazers rookie center Donovan Clingan admitted that he’s still adjusting to the speed of the NBA game and that he may have hit the rookie wall “a little bit” during the first few months of his professional career. Head coach Chauncey Billups said he’s got to “do a better job” of putting Clingan in the best possible position to succeed, but noted that the team anticipated it would take the big man some time to get comfortable going up against the best players in the world. “He’s playing against players that are better than players he’s ever seen every single night, to be honest with you,” Billups said. “So the mobility of some of these guys and the versatility of some of these guys have been tough for him.”
    • Entering the 2024/25 season, Nikola Jokic was a 35.0% three-point shooter across nine years in the NBA. This season, the Nuggets center is making a league-leading 47.9% of his triples. Tony Jones of The Athletic takes a closer look at how Jokic’s work in the offseason and preseason helped the three-time MVP become an even more dangerous offensive player.

In this edition of Northwest Notes, we take a look at some rising stars and standout performances from the Northwest region:

    1. Anthony Edwards (Minnesota Timberwolves): The No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft has been making a name for himself in his rookie season. Edwards has shown off his scoring ability, athleticism, and potential as a future star in the league. Keep an eye on this young talent as he continues to develop and make a impact for the Timberwolves.

    2. Isaiah Hartenstein (Denver Nuggets): Hartenstein has been a key contributor off the bench for the Nuggets this season. The 23-year-old center has shown his versatility, rebounding skills, and shot-blocking ability. With his energy and hustle, Hartenstein has become a fan favorite and a valuable asset for Denver.

    3. Donovan Clingan (UConn Huskies): Clingan, a highly-touted recruit, has been making waves in his freshman season at UConn. The 7-foot-1 center has been dominating in the paint, showcasing his scoring touch, rebounding prowess, and shot-blocking skills. Clingan has the potential to be a game-changer for the Huskies and a future NBA prospect to watch.

    4. Nikola Jokic (Denver Nuggets): Jokic has been putting up MVP-caliber numbers this season, solidifying his status as one of the best players in the league. The All-Star center has been a triple-double machine, leading the Nuggets to success with his scoring, passing, and rebounding. Jokic’s unique skill set and basketball IQ make him a must-watch player in the Northwest and beyond.

Stay tuned for more updates and highlights from the Northwest region in future editions of Northwest Notes.
