  • NATO Scrambled Norwegian Fighter Jets For First Time Against Russian Attack

NATO scrambled Norwegian fighter jets stationed in Poland for the first time on Wednesday, the alliance’s air command said, after Russia had a “massive” number of aircraft operating against Ukraine.

Polish authorities had said on Wednesday that fighter jets were scrambled after “intense long-range aviation activity” was detected from Russia early on Wednesday.

Ukraine reported waves of drone and missile attacks across the country, including in western regions bordering NATO territory. Russia acknowledged it had targeted Ukraine overnight.

    Why It Matters

This is the first time Norwegian jets have been scrambled to protect Poland’s airspace, the NATO air command said in a brief statement on Thursday.

Russian missile and drone attacks on Ukraine have occasionally spilled over into NATO members like Poland and Romania when Moscow has targeted its neighbor’s western regions.

Although NATO countries have not treated these incidents as attacks on the alliance, member states are collectively obliged to respond to assaults on any one alliance nation with full force, raising fears of the conflict in Ukraine escalating.

The Polish military has scrambled fighter jets several times in recent weeks, including on Christmas Day, when Moscow carried out extensive strikes across Ukraine.

NATO countries bordering Ukraine occasionally use jets belonging to other nations’ militaries to respond to Russian activity. Two Spanish air force F-18 jets responded along with Romanian F-16s to reports of an unknown object entering Romania in October.

    What To Know

NATO’s air command said two of Norway’s advanced F-35 jets stationed in Poland were “scrambled in response to a massive number of airborne [Russian] aircraft” on Wednesday.

Poland’s military command had not specified the aircraft scrambled at the time, but added its ground-based air defenses and radars were put on the “highest state of readiness.”

A spokesperson for the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces told Newsweek that “intense long-range aviation activity” from Russia had been detected early on Wednesday.

“The Russian activity was related to air and missile strikes on objects located on the territory of Ukraine, especially western parts of the country,” the spokesperson said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Moscow had carried out a “massive attack” on the country’s energy infrastructure.

Kyiv’s air force said the Kremlin had launched a “combined” attack on Ukraine overnight, using 74 drones as well as ballistic and cruise missiles. The air force said Moscow had launched Kh-22 and Kh-32 cruise missiles from Tu-22M3 jets, and Kh-101 and Kh-55 missiles from Tu-95MS strategic bombers, plus other missiles from unspecified tactical aircraft.

Moscow had focused on the country’s energy facilities, especially gas infrastructure in the northeastern Kharkiv and western Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk regions, the air force said, adding there had been “damage” to the sites.

Russia said it had hit Ukraine’s “critical gas and energy infrastructure,” saying its objectives were “achieved.”

    Who Said What

Russia’s Defense Ministry in a statement posted to messaging app Telegram on Wednesday: “This morning, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation launched a group strike with high-precision weapons and strike unmanned aerial vehicles on critical gas and energy infrastructure facilities that ensure the operation of the military-industrial complex of Ukraine. The strike’s objective was achieved. All designated facilities were hit.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in a statement on social media: “Another massive Russian attack. It’s the middle of winter, and the target for the Russians remains unchanged: our energy infrastructure. Among their objectives were gas and energy facilities that sustain normal life for our people.”

    What Happens Next

Russian aerial attacks on Ukraine—and vice versa—will continue until it becomes clear how President-elect Donald Trump plans to handle ceasefire talks between Kyiv and Moscow. Extensive Russian strikes in western Ukraine will likely trigger more NATO jets being scrambled in the near future.

In a historic move, NATO recently scrambled Norwegian fighter jets for the first time to intercept Russian aircraft approaching Norwegian airspace. This incident highlights the escalating tensions between NATO countries and Russia, as well as the importance of maintaining a strong defense presence in the region.

The Norwegian fighter jets were quickly deployed to intercept the Russian aircraft and ensure the safety and security of Norwegian airspace. This rapid response demonstrates the readiness and capabilities of NATO forces in the face of potential threats.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing geopolitical tensions between NATO and Russia, and the need for continued vigilance and preparedness in the region. As tensions continue to simmer, it is crucial that NATO countries remain united and steadfast in their commitment to defending their borders and ensuring the security of the region.

This latest development underscores the importance of maintaining a strong and resilient defense posture in the face of evolving security challenges. NATO’s swift response to this incident sends a clear message to potential aggressors that any attempts to violate the sovereignty of member states will be met with a swift and decisive response.

As the situation continues to unfold, it is imperative that NATO countries stand together in solidarity and continue to uphold the principles of collective defense and deterrence. The recent scramble of Norwegian fighter jets against Russian aggression serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of a strong and united NATO alliance in maintaining peace and security in the region.

A spokesperson for the cruise line confirmed to Fox News Digital that the 51-year-old went overboard from Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Epic late Thursday afternoon.

The incident was first noted at approximately 3 p.m. as Norwegian Epic was sailing from Ocho Rios, Jamaica en route to Great Stirrup Cay in the Bahamas.

The passenger was on the cruise with his family, the spokesperson said. The cruise left from Port Canaveral, Florida on Saturday, Dec. 21 and was a seven-night Western Caribbean voyage.

The Norwegian Epic, which was built in 2010 and refurbished in 2020, has 19 decks. It can accommodate 4,070 passengers with double occupancy of its cabins and has 1,724 crew members.

It was not immediately clear what caused the man to go overboard. The man has not been identified.

Recently, a passenger on a Norwegian Cruise Line voyage went overboard, causing a stir on board and prompting a search and rescue operation. The incident took place during the night, and the crew immediately sprung into action to locate the missing passenger.

The search and rescue operation involved the use of rescue boats, helicopters, and other resources to scour the area where the passenger was last seen. The cruise line also contacted local authorities for assistance in the search efforts.

Passengers and crew members on board were shaken by the incident, with many expressing concern and hoping for a safe resolution. The cruise line provided updates to keep everyone informed and reassured during the search.

Thankfully, after several hours of searching, the missing passenger was located and safely rescued. The individual was brought back on board and received medical attention, with no serious injuries reported.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of safety protocols and emergency procedures on cruise ships. It also highlights the quick response and coordination of the crew and authorities in handling such situations.

Rescue teams ended a search on Friday for a 51-year-old man who fell overboard from the Norwegian Epic cruise ship en route to the Bahamas, less than 24 hours after he was reported missing.

A spokesperson for Norwegian Cruise Line told NPR that the man was reported missing at around 3 p.m. local time on Thursday as the ship was sailing from Ocho Rios, Jamaica, to Nassau, Bahamas.

A search and rescue operation was quickly carried out, but the mission grew complicated once the sun set just hours later.

“After an extensive search that was unfortunately unsuccessful, the ship was released by the authorities and continued its voyage,” the spokesperson for Norwegian said.

“The guest was traveling with a large group and his family on board is being attended to and supported during this very challenging situation. Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones during this difficult time.”

The circumstances of the man’s fall were not immediately clear.

The tragedy marks the 19th overboard incident aboard a cruise ship this year, according to Cruise Junkie — the most recent being less than a week ago.

On Saturday, a 48-year-old woman died after trying to jump overboard from a Princess Cruises ship en route back to Florida after traveling around the Caribbean.

The woman died from injuries sustained after inadvertently falling onto a lower deck 10 stories below.

In November 2022, a 28-year-old man who fell overboard from a Carnival Valor cruise ship was rescued off of Louisiana’s southeast coast after treading water for nearly 20 hours.

The search for a man who went overboard from a Norwegian Cruise Line ship has come to a tragic end. The 45-year-old passenger was reported missing on Friday night, prompting a massive search and rescue operation involving the Coast Guard and multiple ships in the area.

Despite extensive efforts to locate the missing man, including scouring the waters off the coast of Florida, no sign of him was found. The search was called off on Sunday, with authorities expressing their condolences to the man’s family and friends.

This heartbreaking incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of traveling on open water, and the importance of taking necessary precautions while on a cruise. Our thoughts are with the loved ones of the man who went overboard, as they navigate this difficult time.

  • Worry From Norwegian Cruise Line Ship As Passenger Overboard

Worry From Norwegian Cruise Line Ship As Passenger Overboard

A 51-year-old male guest went overboard from Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Epic late Thursday afternoon, December 26, 2024.

The ship was initially involved in search operations and was joined by another nearby cruise ship in the hopes of a successful outcome. However, it has sadly been confirmed by the cruise line that the search effort has already ended without success.

The incident was first noted at approximately 3 p.m. as Norwegian Epic was sailing northbound from Ocho Rios, Jamaica en route to Great Stirrup Cay in the Bahamas. The ship is currently on a 7-night Western Caribbean voyage that departed Port Canaveral, Florida on Saturday, December 21.

A Norwegian Cruise Line spokesperson told Cruise Hive, “The authorities were immediately notified, and a search and rescue operation under the guidance and oversight of the Bahamas Rescue Coordination Center went underway. After an extensive search that was unfortunately unsuccessful, the ship was released by the authorities to continue its voyage.

Search and rescue operations were initiated immediately, with a flare tossed into the water to mark the ship’s position at the first report of the overboard. Norwegian Epic immediately worked to stop and turn around to begin searching with a typical circular pattern to cross and recross the search area.

It can take some time for a ship as large as the 155,873-gross-ton Norwegian Epic to slow and turn safely. With sunset in the Bahamas on December 26 at 5:18 p.m., there were only a couple hours of strong daylight available before search operations would become much more difficult.

Many passengers onboard were trying to assist with the search by watching over balconies and from the ship’s open decks. Onboard announcements indicated that the individual overboard was wearing a blue shirt.

Holland America Line’s Zuiderdam was also nearby and joined in the search. Zuiderdam is homeported from Port Everglades and is in the midst of a 7-night Caribbean itinerary as well, with December 26 as a day at sea.

It should be noted that Norwegian Epic has had multiple medical incidents aboard the current sailing, with ambulances meeting the ship at the first port of call – Cozumel, Mexico on Monday, December 23 – as well as on Ocho Rios on Christmas Day.

There is no reported connection between the previous medical calls and the overboard incident.

The cruise line’s spokesperson also informed Cruise Hive,The guest was traveling with a large group and his family on board is being attended to and supported during this very challenging situation. Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones during this difficult time.

Norwegian Epic continued search operations either until the cruise ship was released by authorities as they reached the scene to take over the search or if the individual was recovered.

    Other Recent Cruise Ship Overboards

There have been several overboard incidents reported recently from different cruise ships and cruise lines just this month.

On Saturday, December 21, 2024, a female passenger attempted to jump from Princess Cruises’ Sky Princess but impacted a lifeboat and ultimately passed from her injuries. At the time, the ship was returning to Fort Lauderdale at the end of a 7-night Western Caribbean itinerary.

Less than a week earlier, on December 17, a code OSCAR was called from Royal Caribbean’s Vision of the Seas, indicating an overboard situation. The ship was finishing a 12-night Southern Caribbean itinerary at the time.

On December 2, a male passenger was reported missing and believed overboard from Princess Cruises’ Ruby Princess as the ship returned to San Francisco at the end of a 5-night itinerary that had included visits to San Diego and Ensenada.

In a recent incident aboard a Norwegian Cruise Line ship, worry has gripped passengers and crew as a passenger was reported overboard. The incident occurred during the night, when most passengers were asleep in their cabins.

The cruise line immediately initiated search and rescue efforts, deploying lifeboats and notifying local authorities. Despite the swift response, the missing passenger has yet to be located.

As the search continues, anxiety and concern are running high among passengers and crew members. Many are praying for the safe return of the missing individual, while others are left wondering how such a tragedy could have occurred.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of traveling by sea, and the importance of adhering to safety protocols while onboard a cruise ship. Our thoughts are with the missing passenger and their loved ones during this difficult time.

Norwegian Cruise ship ‘man overboard’ sparks frantic search as horrified passengers watch chaos unfold

A search for a Norwegian Cruise Line passenger who went overboard while en route to the Bahamas has been abandoned.

The 51-year-old man fell overboard at approximately 3pm on Thursday as the Norwegian Epic was sailing northbound from Ocho Rios, Jamaica, toward Great Stirrup Cay.

‘The authorities were immediately notified, and a search and rescue operation under the guidance and oversight of the Bahamas Rescue Coordination Center went underway,’ a Norwegian Cruise Line spokesperson told DailyMail.com.

The search was ultimately deemed unsuccessful, after which the ship was ‘released by the authorities to continue its voyage’.

The man who went overboard was traveling with a large group, including his family.

His family members are being ‘attended to and supported during this very challenging situation,’ the spokesperson added.

The ship departed Port Canaveral, Florida, on Saturday and is currently on a seven-night Western Caribbean voyage.

The vessel is now being diverted to Nassau.

Passengers on board posted videos to social media filming the water in the immediate aftermath where they shared the little information they had.

One passenger onboard the ship told DailyMail.com the captain had advised guests that the individual was not found before letting them know the boat was being diverted.

In one video, a passenger could be heard incorrectly saying the missing individual was a child.

Another passenger who shared a video of the ship circling around as it conducted a search said ‘a guy jumped off the boat’.

The Holland America Line happened to be nearby and steamed toward the location to try to help in the rescue. Crew members reportedly shot a flare in the water to mark the ship’s position when the ‘man overboard’ was reported.

The identity of the person who went overboard hasn’t been revealed.

Cruise Hive reported that onboard announcements told passengers that the individual who went overboard was wearing a blue shirt at the time of their fall.

The outlet added that Holland America Line’s Zuiderdam was the ship seen racing toward the Norwegian ship in one of the videos.

The Zuiderdam’s home port is Port Everglades and is in the midst of a 7-night Caribbean itinerary as well, with Thursday being a day at sea.

Sunset in the Bahamas Thursday was at 5:18pm, which would have left rescuers only a few hours of sunlight to get to the victim.

In the first video, which was posted to X at 3:35pm, a woman behind the camera showed the ship circling around a red patch of water said to be the deployed flare.

‘They put a flare, they’re circulating. We did an entire circle looking for the guy that jumped off the boat. He jumped, he fell and bounced off of one of these [lifeboats] and fell in the water,’ she said.

In the other video, posted to TikTok around 5pm, the woman filming zoomed in to show what presumably was the Zuiderdam rushing to the Norwegian ship.

She panned up to a woman standing on a higher balcony who she said was screaming about the person who went overboard. She added that the woman didn’t want to answer more questions.

‘Some people have binoculars and are trying to look out in the water,’ she said. ‘Poor baby. I hope there’s a miracle. I hope there’s a miracle and they’re able to find him.’

This latest tragedy comes just days after another person fell off a Caribbean cruise.

DailyMail.com reported that Elizabeth McElmurray, 48, died on the Sky Princess on December 21 as it returned to Florida from the Caribbean.

While the circumstances surrounding her death remain unclear, Princess Cruises says she fell while trying to ‘jump’ into the water, inadvertently landing on one of the cruise ship decks 10 stories below.

On December 15, McElmurray shared a photograph of herself smiling alongside her mother as they boarded the ship in Fort Lauderdale.

They were setting sail to scatter the ashes of her mother’s husband on his favorite beach in Jamaica.

Elizabeth McElmurray, 48, who tumbled to her death from a cruise ship during a Christmas Caribbean tour has been pictured smiling as she excitedly boarded the boat with her mother just days before. (McElmurray is pictured left, with her mother, Ellen Downie Mathews, right)

‘I never expected to lose my daughter. I want to also publicly thank the crew for their kindness and compassion during this ordeal,’ her devastated mother, Ellen Downie Mathews, said in an online tribute.

McElmurray’s younger brother paid tribute in another post.

‘She was an amazing woman that loved her family,’ he said.

‘Her nurturing nature for animals was a wonderful quality we shared together I want to thank everyone who tried to help her and everyone’s kind words.

‘This is a loss that is so very heavy. Remember to tell your family and friends you love them, make them smile and laugh even when life is hard. Find beauty when ever you can and strength will follow.’

McElmurray was a manager at retailer Circle K, according to social media profiles. She was born in Nashua, New Hampshire, and lived in Wakefield, Massachusetts.

Passengers on board told DailyMail.com the captain gave the devastating announcement that McElmurray had died over the speakers on Saturday.

They told DailyMail.com she had tried to jump into the water from one of the top decks, but hit a lifeboat deck around 10 floors below instead. Police were seen combing the cruise ship later that day.

The ship had been making its way back to Fort Lauderdale, Florida from an eight-day voyage to Cozumel, Mexico; Ocho Rios, Jamaica; George Town, Grand Cayman; and the cruise line’s private Bahamian resort, Princess Cays, at the time.

On Tuesday evening, a Norwegian Cruise ship sailing in the Caribbean was rocked by a terrifying incident when a passenger went overboard, sparking a frantic search operation as horrified passengers watched the chaos unfold.

The cruise ship, which was en route to its next destination, immediately launched rescue boats and called for assistance from nearby vessels in the area. Passengers onboard were in a state of shock and disbelief as they witnessed the dramatic scene play out before their eyes.

As the search continued into the night, tensions ran high among passengers and crew members, with many fearing the worst for the missing individual. The cruise ship’s captain reassured everyone that every effort was being made to locate the passenger and bring them to safety.

In the midst of the chaos, the cruise ship’s crew worked tirelessly to coordinate the search efforts and provide support to passengers who were understandably shaken by the traumatic experience. Despite the challenging circumstances, the crew remained dedicated to ensuring the safety and well-being of everyone onboard.

As the search operation continued, hope began to fade as hours passed without any sign of the missing passenger. The heartbreaking situation served as a stark reminder of the dangers of traveling at sea, and left a somber mood hanging over the once lively cruise ship.

Ultimately, the search efforts were unsuccessful in locating the missing individual, leaving passengers and crew members devastated by the tragic turn of events. The incident serves as a sobering reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of safety measures while at sea.

As the Norwegian Cruise ship continued on its journey, the memory of the man overboard incident lingered in the minds of all onboard, serving as a poignant reminder of the unpredictable and sometimes perilous nature of life at sea.
