  • Avalanche Game 52 at New York Islanders, Lines, Notes & How to Watch

The Colorado Avalanche (29-20-2) close out their three-game road trip against the New York Islanders (21-20-7) on Tuesday. Puck drop is scheduled for 5:38 p.m. MT.

The Avs came away with a big win against the Rangers in their last game. With more time to get acclimated, Martin Necas was excellent on the top line with Nathan MacKinnon and finished with two assists. He also hit the post multiple times, getting ever so close to his first goal in an Avalanche uniform.

Cale Makar also was great at MSG, scoring two goals and assisting on Artturi Lehkonen’s late game-winning goal after exiting the box.

In the first meeting earlier in the year against Patrick Roy and the Islanders, Colorado fell 6-2 backstopped by Alexandar Georgiev. They’re going with Mackenzie Blackwood this time around. Blackwood is 10-4-2 with the Avs and boasts a .922 save percentage. He hasn’t faced the Islanders since 2022 during his days with New Jersey.

The only change the Avs are making is on defense. Keaton Middleton will be healthy scratched in favor of Calvin de Haan, who draws in against the team that drafted him in 2009. The Avs’ forward lines are expected to remain the same.

The Isles haven’t had a great season but are playing their best hockey to date. They’re riding a four-game winning streak and are 7-3-0 in their last 10. They also traded for defenseman Scott Perunovich from the Blues on Monday.

The Isles are a fascinating team heading into the trade deadline. If they continue to win, will they pull the plug on shipping out rentals like Brock Nelson? It’s still too early to say given how many teams stand between them and the second wildcard spot. Their chances are very slim, but a win against the Avs could bring them closer to needing to decide that.

Ilya Sorokin is expected to get the nod for New York. He’s 1-2-2 in five starts versus the Avs, including a 46-save shutout in a 1-0 shootout loss in December 2022. The October matchup earlier this season was his first win against Colorado.

  • Sabres vs. Bruins | How to watch, lineup notes, and storylines

    Storylines

    1. Finding ways to finish

With 75 combined shots on goal at Calgary and Edmonton, Buffalo set a season high for a two-game span. And Natural Stat Trick credited the Sabres with 16 and 15 high-danger scoring chances in those games, their most since Dec. 11 versus the Rangers (17). But two goals didn’t cut it in either contest, both of which were tied entering the third period.

On Saturday, after taking a 2-1 lead in the second period, the Sabres failed to score on a pair of breakaway chances. They also outshot the Oilers 36-22 over the final 40 minutes.

“You get a couple breakaways you don’t finish on,” Ruff said. “A 2-on-1, you don’t finish. Some of the high-quality stuff – good teams turn that into the third goal.

“We’ve got to get better at taking advantage of our high-quality opportunities, to put the opposition in a position where it’s hard for them to come back.”

Those opportunities include the man advantage. Jiri Kulich scored a go-ahead goal Saturday just seconds after an Oilers penalty had expired, but Buffalo’s power play has gone 3-for-29 in the last eight games, compared to 8-for-19 in the previous eight.

“Plenty of good opportunities, but it didn’t make a difference for us,” Ruff said of the power play’s 1-for-14 road trip.

    2. Scouting the Bruins

The Bruins beat the Sabres 3-1 on Dec. 21 in Boston, with Morgan Geekie scoring a power-play game winner 18:15 into the third.

Beginning that night, Geekie has scored nine goals in his last 17 games, and his 15 goals this season rank third among Bruins skaters. He’s benefitted greatly from a first-line role alongside David Pastrnak, who on Monday was named the NHL’s First Star of the Week after recording eight points (3+5) in four games.

Pastrnak leads the NHL with 11 goals in January. He’s factored into 22 of Boston’s 37 goals this month, keeping the Bruins (5-1-1 in their last seven games) in the Eastern Conference playoff picture.

Boston’s top two defenseman, Charlie McAvoy and Hampus Lindholm, are nearing returns from injury but remain unavailable for Tuesday’s game. Forwards Mark Kastelic and Oliver Wahlstrom also didn’t make the trip to Buffalo.

The Bruins have won five of these teams’ last six matchups and 12 of the last 14.

  • Twins Notes: Varland, Woods Richardson, Castro

The Twins entered the 2024 season with high hopes that prospect and Twin Cities native Louie Varland would step up and seize a spot in the rotation. The former 15th-round pick had the look of a late-round steal, having climbed to the No. 88 prospect in the game on FanGraphs’ top-100 rankings after pitching to a 3.06 ERA, 27.3% strikeout rate and 7.9% walk rate in 126 1/3 innings between Double-A and Triple-A in 2022 and notching a 3.81 ERA through 26 frames in his MLB debut late that season. Varland posted a 3.97 ERA with similar strikeout and walk rates in 81 2/3 Triple-A frames in 2023 and then held his own with a 4.63 ERA and continued K-BB rates in his 2023 range.

The 2024 season, however, could scarcely have gone worse for Varland. He lasted four starts in the rotation before being optioned to Triple-A with a 9.18 ERA (17 runs in 16 2/3 innings). Varland had a rollercoaster season in Triple-A, resulting in a 4.75 ERA through 16 starts, though a disproportionate amount of damage came in one start that saw him tagged for a staggering 11 earned runs. (He had a combined 3.67 ERA in his other appearances.) A late look in the majors yielded poor overall results, though Varland did finish with a nice stretch of 7 2/3 innings, wherein he allowed two runs with an 11-to-2 K/BB ratio.

Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports that as the Twins gear up for 2025, it appears increasingly likely that Varland will be ticketed for a relief role. The St. Paul native averaged better than 95 mph on his heater last season even when working as a starter; it’s reasonable to expect that velocity to play up in a transition to a shorter role. Varland has posted at least average swinging-strike rates in the upper minors and big leagues as well, so it stands to reason that he could see an uptick in whiffs with a more powerful repertoire.

One reason it’s become easier to move a former rotation hopeful like Varland to the ’pen has been the reemergence of Simeon Woods Richardson. The former top prospect had tumbled down Minnesota’s starting pitching depth chart heading into ’24 after a dismal 2023 showing in Triple-A. But, as Woods Richardson explained in a sitdown with The Athletic’s Aaron Gleeman, an offseason and spring training of work with the Twins’ data team and coaching staff brought about a new arm slot that produced more velocity and a new-look slider that broke out as his most effective secondary pitch.

Woods Richardson wore down a bit late in the 2024 season as he pushed to a new career-high level in terms of workload (31 starts, 147 innings), but he finished the season with a 4.17 ERA, 20.6% strikeout rate and 8.4% walk rate. His four-seamer, which averaged just 90.7 mph in his brief MLB looks in 2022-23, sat at 93.1 mph on the season despite fading over his final six starts (92.1 mph average four-seamer, 6.75 ERA). Woods Richardson, acquired alongside Austin Martin in the trade that sent the final year-plus of control over Jose Berrios to Toronto, now looks like he’ll open the 2025 season locked into the No. 4 spot in Minnesota’s rotation behind Pablo Lopez, Joe Ryan and Bailey Ober.

Development from in-house arms of this nature will be key for the Twins in 2025, as ownership has handcuffed the baseball operations staff all offseason in terms of roster additions, as the Pohlad family explores a sale of the club. The Twins have been active in trade talks but have not yet pieced together a deal of much note. They’ve added some catching depth in small swaps for former top prospect Diego Cartaya and utilityman Mickey Gasper, but top trade candidates like Christian Vazquez and Chris Paddack remain with the club. The Twins still would like to add at first base and pick up a right-handed hitting outfielder, but there’s been no trade of note and not one major league free agent signing thus far, given payroll constraints from ownership. The Twins may not need to cut payroll from its current level, but they also don’t have much (or any) room to raise it without a trade that trims some salary from the books.

With those financial limitations in mind, the front office is considering some time at first base for utilityman Willi Castro, per Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press. Twenty-six-year-old Jose Miranda, who bounced back from a 2023 season ruined by shoulder surgery to bat .284/.322/.441 last year (115 wRC+) is the top in-house option at the moment. He’s played 698 big league innings there and graded poorly from a defensive standpoint, although the former second baseman/third baseman was largely learning the position on the fly in 2022 when he tallied 595 of those innings; he’d entered that season with all of 225 career minor league innings at the position.

It seems unlikely that Castro would be a regular option at first, given the value of his versatility. He’s a viable backup at shortstop, second base, third base and anywhere in the outfield. Adding first base to that repertoire only further broadens his importance to the club. There’s been some thought that Castro and his own $6.4MM salary could be a candidate to change hands, though doing so would thin out the Twins’ depth at all those positions and remove one of the team’s best baserunners. With Minnesota at least ostensibly not required to slash payroll any further, trading Castro seems like a scenario to which the front office would be heavily opposed.

  • Heat Notes: Ware, Larsson, Rozier, Butler, Rivers

Heat first-year center Kel’el Ware is quietly moving up the rookie rankings and is now seen as a favorite for the Rookie of the Year award. He started the second half of a blowout win against the Spurs on Jan. 19, scoring 25 points, and has since been promoted to the starting lineup alongside Bam Adebayo, allowing the latter to slide down to the four spot.

It was working,” coach Erik Spoelstra said of starting the pair together, per ESPN’s Tim Bontemps and Brian Windhorst (Insider link). “There’s a lot of complex decisions that we’re trying to make. If there’s something that’s obvious, and it’s working in a big way, let’s do it.

In his three games getting extended looks next to Adebayo, Ware is averaging 22.3 points, 11.0 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks per night while shooting 52.9% from the field and launching 6.0 three-point attempts per game. Really, his improvement’s been on display since the start of the month. In 13 games in January, he’s averaging 13.6 PPG and 7.0 RPG. It’s a remarkable turnaround for a player who didn’t often see many minutes in 2024.

There’s not a better organization for him to have gone to than that one,” a Western Conference scout told ESPN.

We have more from the Heat:

    • Another Heat rookie got a chance to stand out as Pelle Larsson was elevated to the starting lineup on Thursday against the Bucks, as observed by the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson (Twitter link). Larsson took over Jimmy Butler‘s starting position with the six-time All-Star suspended by the team, supplanting Jaime Jaquez Jr., who had claimed that spot during Butler’s previous suspension. Larsson quickly got into foul trouble, however, and only played 14 minutes. He’s averaging 4.3 points in 27 games this year.
    • Terry Rozier is a “strong believer” that his and the Heat’s play will turn around during the second half of the season, according to HoopsHype’s Cyro Asseo de Choch. Rozier admitted that it has been a challenge adjusting his style of play this year. “When we look at last year, I probably got 8-10 ball screens a game. Now I probably don’t get more than one to two ball screens,” Rozier said. “And it’s not a knock on anybody. We obviously have players who we’re mainly worried about. And we’re trying to get active and we’re trying to get going. So I’m just trying to find my ways, find my rhythm. And it’s been kind of, it’s been kind of tough this season. But I think right now where I’m at, my headspace and everything, I kind of know what I want to do and how I can help this team go forward.”
    • There’s a myriad of potential outcomes for the Heat’s standoff with Butler, Ira Winderman of South Florida’s Sun Sentinel writes. It would be a win for Butler if he ends up in his preferred destination, Phoenix, while the Heat would come away victorious if they obtained their ideal trade package by moving him. Rolling suspensions, paying him not to play, and a messy summer could all come into play if Butler isn’t moved at the deadline, Winderman writes.
    • Bucks head coach Doc Rivers offered some sympathies to Spoelstra in regard to the Butler dilemma on Thursday before the two teams squared off. “I just hope they find a way through it,” Rivers said, per Winderman (Twitter link). “I feel terrible for Spo. There’s no winning for Spo.” As Winderman relays, Rivers noted that he dealt with a similar situation with Ben Simmons in Philadelphia.

The Miami Heat have been making some moves in the offseason, and here are some heat notes on their newest acquisitions:

    – D.J. Ware: The Heat signed Ware to a two-year deal, bringing in the veteran guard to provide some depth in the backcourt. Ware is known for his scoring ability and could be a valuable asset off the bench for Miami.

    – Jon Larsson: Larsson, a 6’9″ forward from Sweden, was selected by the Heat in the second round of the draft. Larsson is a versatile player who can score inside and out, and his size and skill set could make him a valuable piece for Miami in the future.

    – Terry Rozier: The Heat acquired Rozier in a trade with the Charlotte Hornets, sending Goran Dragic and Precious Achiuwa in exchange. Rozier is a dynamic guard who can score in bunches and play solid defense, and he should provide a boost to Miami’s backcourt.

    – Jimmy Butler: Butler has been a key player for the Heat since joining the team in 2019, and he recently signed a contract extension to stay in Miami for the long term. Butler is a two-way star who can score, defend, and lead his team, and his presence will be crucial for the Heat’s success moving forward.

    – Austin Rivers: The Heat signed Rivers to a one-year deal, adding another experienced guard to their roster. Rivers is known for his scoring ability and toughness on defense, and he should provide some valuable depth for Miami in the backcourt.

Overall, the Heat have made some solid moves this offseason to bolster their roster and improve their chances of contending in the Eastern Conference. With a mix of veterans and young talent, Miami could be a team to watch out for in the upcoming season.

  • Southeast Notes: Ball, Adebayo, Ware, Herro, Hawks

LaMelo Ball leads the Eastern Conference All-Star voting among guards despite the Hornets‘ poor record (11-28). However, Ball has stepped up his game, particularly on defense, Roderick Boone of the Charlotte Observer writes.

Ball had 23 points, nine assists and seven rebounds in Charlotte’s victory over Dallas on Monday afternoon.

“His two-way play has really helped us,” coach Charles Lee said. “We’ve made an effort to play with more pace offensively. I think the whole squad has really bought into that and he’s really the head of the snake when it comes to pace, and his attack and willingness to either go finish in the attack or collapse the defense and kick out for some early opportunities.

“And then defensively, he’s denying (Kyrie) Irving at the end of the game, being more physical. I feel like in our transition defense, we are having a lot more communication and urgency to get back. So, just really impressed with his two-way game and not trying to be offensively focused.”

We have more from the Southeast Division:

    • The pairing of Bam Adebayo and rookie Kel’el Ware gave the Heat a “dynamic” new look, according to Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald. At the end of the first half and beginning of the second half, the Heat went on a 36-13 run against San Antonio on Sunday with the two bigs playing together. “Right now, defensively that just looked like it was elite,” coach Erik Spoelstra said. “So if I have to lean into this thing defensively right now for our team to get to another level, I will. That could be a path and we’ll dive into this. But that looks like a path where we can find some higher success, at least on one side of the floor.”
    • Tyler Herro is averaging career bests in points, rebounds and assists and the Heat wing is drawing extra defensive attention. Lakers coach JJ Redick says the Herro needs to be guarded like Stephen Curry. Adebayo said it’s a learning experience for Herro, Chiang writes “He is the focal point of a lot of scouting reports,” he said. “So for us, it’s understanding that he’s got to play kind of like Steph. He might not get the ball, but go set a screen, go screen somebody. That’s how you get yourself open. Me and him had that conversation during the (Spurs) game. He was like, ‘Man, what am I supposed to do?’ I was like, ‘Just go screen for somebody.’ Literally if they’re face-guarding you, just go screen for somebody. Somebody is going to be open.”
    • The Hawks have the East’s fourth-best record in large part because they’re handling adversity better, according to Lauren Williams of the Atlanta Journal Constitution. They have a 6-2 record against the teams above them in the conference standings. “Your hope is when you find adversity in the game, because it comes in a lot of different forms that that can bring you together and you can raise your level, as opposed to it splitting you apart,” coach Quin Snyder said.

Southeast Notes: Ball, Adebayo, Ware, Herro, Hawks

In the Southeast division of the NBA, there are several players and teams making headlines. Let’s take a look at some of the latest news and updates from the region:

    – LaMelo Ball continues to impress for the Charlotte Hornets, showing off his playmaking ability and flashy passes. The rookie point guard has quickly become a fan favorite and a key piece for the Hornets moving forward.

    – Bam Adebayo is having a standout season for the Miami Heat, showcasing his defensive prowess and improved offensive game. Adebayo’s versatility on both ends of the court has been a major factor in the Heat’s success this season.

    – LaMelo Ball’s older brother, Lonzo Ball, has been linked to a potential trade to the New Orleans Pelicans. The younger Ball has expressed interest in playing with his brother in the NBA, leading to speculation about a potential reunion in New Orleans.

    – Tyler Herro has been a key contributor for the Miami Heat this season, providing scoring off the bench and stepping up in crunch time. Herro’s ability to create his shot and knock down clutch shots has been crucial for the Heat’s success.

    – The Atlanta Hawks have been surging in the Eastern Conference, led by All-Star point guard Trae Young. The Hawks have shown improvement on both ends of the court and are looking like a playoff contender in the East.

Overall, the Southeast division is filled with exciting players and teams to watch. Keep an eye on these players and teams as the season progresses.

It felt like the Celtics, most notably Derrick White, found something on Saturday night in Dallas. Just in time for another Texas team that’s also hit a bit of a stride.

Though Boston fell behind by 10 before the midway point of the first quarter of their Finals rematch with the Mavericks, the reigning champions surged back, with White’s 16-point third quarter fueling a 122-107 victory.

It capped a 3-1 Western Conference trip for the Celtics, who welcome the Rockets to TD Garden on Monday night. Ime Udoka’s team made its own statement on Saturday, beating the East-leading Cavaliers, 135-131, in Cleveland.

It was no fluke: Houston also beat the Cavs, 109-108, at home on Wednesday. The Rockets thus joined Atlanta — themselves a thorn in the Celtics’ side — as the only teams to beat Cleveland twice this season.

“We knew that it was going to be an aggressive game tonight and they’re going to come aggressive,” Alperen Sengun told reporters in Cleveland. “So we came more aggressive.”

He had 26 points in the victory, as did Jalen Green, and Thompson produced his first triple-double of the year — 23 points, 14 rebounds, and 10 assists. The latter two are among the four top-four picks Houston’s made across the last four drafts, years of prior struggle beginning to yield a contender.

Since the Celtics routed Houston by 23 on Jan. 3, the Rockets are 8-2, and at 30-14 sit second in the West behind Oklahoma City. They lead the NBA in both rebounding and second-chance points, and have won nine of their last 10 away from home.

Green has been particularly hot, averaging 26.9 points in January on 49 percent shooting. Jayson Tatum, Boston’s leader, is at 24.3 and 42.7.

  • Heat Notes: Highsmith, Butler, Adebayo, Jaquez, Herro

Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra made a significant change to his starting lineup Tuesday night, using rookie big man Kel’el Ware alongside Bam Adebayo in a double-big frontcourt. That meant Haywood Highsmith came off the bench after starting 32 of the previous 33 games he had played, and he saw just four minutes of action in a loss to Portland.

“Just control what I can control,” Highsmith told reporters, including Anthony Chiang of The Miami Herald. “It’s a long season. I know there are going to be ups and downs. I’m used to it, for sure.”

The 28-year-old forward has been primarily a reserve during his four seasons in Miami, but his role has expanded this season, even though his minutes aren’t always steady. Spoelstra emphasized that the team is still counting on Highsmith to contribute, even when he doesn’t start.

“I actually talked to him about it, that sometimes when things are fluid and they’re moving fast, sometimes things happen and it’s not at all an indictment or an indication of how you’re playing,” Spoelstra said. “He’s an example of that. He’s had really important minutes and his role is important for us. He just has to stay with it. We all believe in him, we all know his importance. And as we figure things out, his minutes will likely be more consistent.”

    There’s more from Miami:

    • In light of Jimmy Butler‘s latest suspension, Shams Charania of ESPN describes the situation with the volatile forward as “untenable” (Twitter video link). He adds that Heat coaches and players view the standoff as “a distraction” and “chaos,” and some cite a lack of clarity in the organization.
    • Among the reasons for Butler’s first suspension was a perceived lack of effort, and Bobby Marks of ESPN offers several statistics to back that up (Twitter link). Among the highlights, Butler attempted fewer than 10 field goals in four of his last five games, and he moved at a “fast speed” – as defined by Second Spectrum – just 5% of the time in Tuesday’s game vs. Portland.
    • Adebayo has helped to keep the team’s younger players focused on business rather than the daily news about Butler, per Ira Winderman of the Sun-Sentinel. “They’re handling it as professionally as they should,” Adebayo said. “I’m really emphasizing to the young guys to really be professional in this league. But, like I said before, we still have to play games.”
    • Jaime Jaquez filled in well as Butler’s replacement in the starting lineup during his first suspension, but he was back in a reserve role once Butler returned, Winderman adds. The second-year forward has already learned how to handle such adjustments. “What I realize is that is part of the NBA,” Jaquez said. “And you’ve just got to be ready for what comes. And I think, myself, I’m starting to grow and realize just be ready for anything, not have any expectations, just go out here and be ready to hoop.”
    • The Heat struggled to create good scoring opportunities on Tuesday as Tyler Herro missed his first game of the season, Winderman observes in a separate story. Herro is dealing with groin soreness, but he’s listed as probable for Thursday’s game at Milwaukee.

The Miami Heat have been making waves this season, and here are some notes on some of their key players:

    1. Highsmith: The rookie forward has been impressing with his energy and hustle on both ends of the court. He’s shown a willingness to do the dirty work and has been a key contributor off the bench.

    2. Butler: Jimmy Butler continues to be the heart and soul of the Heat, leading the team in scoring and providing veteran leadership. His tenacity and defensive prowess have been crucial to the team’s success.

    3. Adebayo: Bam Adebayo has taken his game to the next level this season, becoming an All-Star and one of the best big men in the league. His versatility on offense and defense has been a huge asset for the Heat.

    4. Jaquez: Johnny Jaquez has been a pleasant surprise for the Heat, stepping up in the absence of some key players. His scoring and rebounding have been crucial in keeping the team afloat.

    5. Herro: Tyler Herro has had his ups and downs this season, but when he’s on, he’s a game-changer. His scoring ability and clutch gene make him a valuable asset for the Heat.

With these players stepping up and contributing in different ways, the Heat look poised for a deep playoff run. Keep an eye on them as they continue to make noise in the Eastern Conference.

  • Twins Notes: Correa, Buxton, Ryan, Lewis

The TwinsFest fan event in Minnesota was today and, as noted by Matthew Leach of MLB.com, manager Rocco Baldelli and president of baseball operations Derek Falvey provided updates on the health of a number of major players on the roster. Chief among those was shortstop Carlos Correa, who turned in phenomenal numbers for the Twins on a rate basis last year but was limited to just 86 games due to plantar fasciitis. Falvey noted today that Correa has had “no issues” with his plantar fasciitis this offseason, and Correa himself backed that up.

“I’m ready to go, full go for spring training,” Correa told reporters, as relayed by Bobby Nightengale of the Star Tribune. “I’ve been sprinting. I’ve been running around. I’ve been doing about everything. I’ve been focused on not only just treatment but also strengthening. A lot of walking barefoot around the house. All that’s helping work on my toes and all that, so I’m in a really good spot.”

Nightengale adds that Correa is ahead of schedule relative to last offseason and has already begun hitting and taking groundballs in addition to running. That Correa appears to be fully healthy headed into 2025 is surely a huge relief for the Twins, as the shortstop is arguably the club’s most impactful player when healthy. If he can deliver anything like last season’s .310/.388/.517 slash line over a full season this year, that should be a huge boost for the Twins as they angle towards making a return to the postseason following a frustrating late-season collapse last September.

Correa isn’t the only impact player who received a positive health update today, however. Falvey and Baldelli both indicated that having a normal offseason without any rehabbing or physical therapy has done wonders for center fielder Byron Buxton, who has often been injured frequently throughout his career but managed to appear in 102 games this year with a .279/.335/.524 slash line in 388 trips to the plate. If he can build on his healthy offseason and stay on the field in 2025, that would give the Twins a second player with five-win potential in their lineup alongside Correa.

Turning to the rotation, right-hander Joe Ryan ended the 2024 campaign on the shelf due to Grade 2 teres major strain that sidelined him back in August. Fortunately, the issue has not bled into the offseason and Leach indicates that he’s at the same point in his throwing program that he would be at this point in the winter during any other year. That’s surely a huge relief for the Twins given that Ryan was their best starter last year when healthy. The 28-year-old righty posted a strong 3.60 ERA (115 ERA+) with a 3.44 FIP and a strong 27.3% strikeout rate in 23 starts for the club last season. Building on that performance in 2025 would be particularly key for the Twins if staff ace Pablo Lopez were to be traded this winter, though rumors have quieted down on that front since reports indicated the club was listening to offers on him last month.

One other update to come from today’s festivities involved infielder Royce Lewis and the club’s plans for him in 2025. Earlier this winter, reporting indicated that the Twins were considering a shift from third base to second for Lewis. Since then, it’s been confirmed that the club plans to have Lewis take reps at both positions during Spring Training, but LaVelle E. Neal III of the Star Tribune relayed this evening that Falvey made clear the club’s plan as things stand is for Lewis to continue playing third base during the season this year. That would seemingly leave second base open for 2022 first rounder Brooks Lee, though Edouard Julien is also capable of playing the position.

In today’s Twins Notes, we’ve got updates on some key players in the Minnesota Twins organization:

    1. Carlos Correa: The Twins made a big splash in free agency by signing superstar shortstop Carlos Correa to a massive contract. Correa brings a potent bat and elite defense to the Twins lineup, and his presence should help elevate the team to new heights.

    2. Byron Buxton: Buxton has long been considered one of the most talented players in baseball, but injuries have hampered his ability to stay on the field. The Twins are hopeful that Buxton can finally put together a full, healthy season and showcase his incredible skills for a full 162-game slate.

    3. Joe Ryan: Ryan burst onto the scene in 2021 with a stellar rookie campaign, showcasing excellent control and strikeout stuff. The Twins are counting on Ryan to continue his development and solidify his spot in the rotation for years to come.

    4. Royce Lewis: The former number one overall pick has faced some setbacks in his development due to injuries, but the Twins are still high on his potential. Lewis has the tools to be a dynamic player at the major league level, and the Twins are hopeful that he can put it all together and contribute to the team’s success in the near future.

Stay tuned for more Twins Notes as the season progresses!
