  • Nuggets Notes: Gordon, Starters, Trade Needs


    Nuggets forward Aaron Gordon claims his lingering calf injury doesn’t bother him anymore, writes Bennett Durando of The Denver Post. The veteran big man has been playing under a minutes restriction, but it sounds like he’s eager to change that.

    “I’m ready,” Gordon said. “I don’t feel my calf anymore. Yeah. I’m ready. So it’s on the training staff and the coaching staff now.”

    Gordon has yet to play more than 25 minutes in a contest since returning from the calf injury on January 12. Durando notes that staggering the minutes of Gordon and Jokic has had an intriguing benefit for Denver — the Nuggets sport a +9.5 net rating when Gordon plays without Jokic. Denver has historically suffered when its three-time MVP, who generally plays alongside Gordon, sits. The 6’8″ forward is the 2023 champs’ top defender, as well as a savvy and efficient post scorer.

    “We just need to continue to stay with it,” head coach Michael Malone said of the team’s current strategy. “Bring him off the bench for the time being, and utilize him in any way we can to help us get wins.”

    • As Gordon’s health continues to improve, it begs the question of just when — or if — he should be returned to the Nuggets’ starting five. The Denver Post’s Troy Renck and Bennett Durando consider whether or not such a move should happen, and how it would impact the way in which Denver approaches this year’s trade deadline. Russell Westbrook has been starting ahead of Gordon lately, with forward Michael Porter Jr. playing up a position to accommodate the extra guard.

But something has shifted lately. Now, Denver is 28-17, currently good for the Western Conference’s No. 4 seed. In another story for The Denver Post, Durando assesses the team’s needs at the trade deadline, suggesting that a frontcourt upgrade or some long-range bench sniping could help improve the team for the 2024/25 home stretch.

    With just 1 win in 6 games the Hornets aren’t exactly lighting up the league at the moment, they’ll likely be without star player LaMelo Ball who did not participate in last night’s loss to the Clippers. Charlotte battled hard, Miles Bridges and Vasilije Micic had 27 and 20 points respectively, but as we all know this team is very limited at more than 1 position. The Hornets have dropped 5 straight home games vs Denver at home, but the good news is they are basically playing without any pressure at this point of the season.

    Playing with no rest hasn’t affected the Nuggets all that much this season – they are 8-1 SU in 9 such games. But their defense is what concerns me here. Over their last 3 games they’re allowing 128.3 points per game which is the worst mark in the NBA. During this current road trip, we also saw them lose to a sub-par Chicago Bulls team as a 9.5-point favorite and while I do believe they’ll win here I just cannot trust them to cover.   • Nuggets suffer brutal Russell Westbrook injury blow: latest updates


    Beyond Nikola Jokic, the Nuggets haven’t had many consistent bright spots this season but Russell Westbrook has definitely been one. The team signed the 36-year-old former league MVP to a veteran minimum contract in the offseason out of necessity.

    Russ had fallen out of favor around the league and had a nonexistent market. The Nuggets had a roster lacking depth and talent and extremely limited assets to upgrade.     Westbrook has played so well that he has usurped a role in the starting lineup from Christian Braun and had people wondering if he’s actually the Nuggets’ second-best player. But the good vibes took a pause on the ironman, Westbrook on Friday night.

    Westbrook leaves game vs. 76ers with hamstring injury

    In the second half of the Ngugets’ Friday night game in Philadephia, Westbrook left the game and was ultimately ruled out during the fourth quarter. The Nuggets reported that Westbrook was experiencing hamstring tightness when he left for the locker room.

  • Nuggets’ Russell Westbrook exits win due to hamstring tightness


    PHILADELPHIA — Nuggets guard Russell Westbrook left Denver’s 137-134 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday night because of left hamstring tightness and did not return.

    Westbrook, who had 4 points, 7 assists and 6 turnovers in 25 minutes, exited 50 seconds into the fourth quarter after a quick timeout by Nuggets coach Michael Malone, and though the team listed him as questionable, he never returned.

    Malone didn’t give an update on Westbrook’s status, though he noted Westbrook had “a big smile on his face” after Denver’s victory. And though Westbrook didn’t speak to the media postgame, he left the arena without a limp.

    The Nuggets will close a five-game road trip across eight days Saturday night in Charlotte, North Carolina, the second of a back-to-back set.

    After losing the first three games of the road trip in Minnesota, Chicago and New York, Denver appeared headed for another loss. The Nuggets were trailing 123-122 after reigning MVP Nikola Jokic committed a travel with 2:39 remaining.

    But then, over the final 2:30, Jokic went 4-for-4 from the field for 11 points and assisted on Christian Braun‘s layup — the only shot attempt by another Nugget during that stretch — to close out the game and snap Denver’s three-game losing streak.

    “That’s just what he does,” Braun, who will return to the starting lineup if Westbrook has to miss time, said of Jokic. “He made some big plays for us, and that’s who he is.”

    Since Westbrook entered Denver’s starting lineup Dec. 27, he has averaged 14.2 points, 6.6 assists and 6.4 rebounds while shooting 53.8% from the field. It was unclear whether Westbrook would remain in the starting lineup over Braun as Denver has slowly been working Aaron Gordon back into the lineup after a calf injury. On Wednesday, Gordon returned to the starting five and Braun went to the bench as the Nuggets lost to the Knicks.

    “Never an easy decision,” Malone said Wednesday. “Christian Braun has been great for us this year. Not good — he’s been great. And he’s done everything that’s been asked of him. But I just like keeping Russell out there.

    “I think the Russ-and-Nikola dynamic is the best two-man combination in the NBA right now, and I didn’t want to disrupt their rhythm.”
