Cavaliers 149-135 Nuggets (Dec 27, 2024) Game Recap
DENVER — — Donovan Mitchell scored 33 points, Evan Mobley had 26 points and the streaking Cleveland Cavaliers beat the Denver Nuggets 149-135 on Friday night for their sixth straight win.
Cleveland set a season high in points and improved to 10-1 since dropping two in a row to Atlanta last month.
Nikola Jokic had 27 points, 14 rebounds and 13 assists for his league-leading 12th triple-double of the season, and Jamal Murray also had 27 with 10 assists for Denver, which has dropped two in a row.

Cleveland led by as many as 19 to improve its NBA-best record to 27-4.
Takeaways Cavaliers: Passed the first test in what is the start of their toughest road trip of the season. All five starters made more than half of their field goal attempts and all but Dean Wade scored 20 or more points.
Nuggets: Their porous defense was hurt by the absence of Aaron Gordon, who is out with a right calf strain. They allowed season highs in points and points in the first half (80).
Key moment With Denver leading 53-50 early in the second quarter, Darius Garland sparked a 16-0 run with six of his 25 points that allowed the Cavaliers to take control of the game. Their lead never dipped below double digits the rest of the way.
Key stat Mitchell was 6 of 12 from 3-point range.
Up next The Cavaliers continue their four-game trip out west at Golden State on Monday night, while the Nuggets host Detroit on Saturday night.

#Darius #Garland #fills #stat #sheet #Friday #Nuggets #Darius #Garland #NewsPreview: Denver Nuggets take quick trip to play Utah Jazz
The Denver Nuggets are entering the NBA season grind. The NBA Cup and Christmas Day are over, the All Star break, trade deadline and subsequent stretch run are two months away, there’s nothing left to do but grind through the Winter and try to pile up wins. For the Nuggets, that means taking care of business against teams like the Utah Jazz, even when on the road. Utah is once again headed towards another high lottery pick in their multi-year rebuild. They’ve won just seven games this season and while they have some promising young players like Keyonte George and talented vets like Lauri Markannen, they do not have a competitive roster. Denver needs to beat a team they’re supposed to beat tonight.

The Three Things
The thing to watch for: stop the threes
Nov 2, 2024; Denver, Colorado, USA; Utah Jazz guard Keyonte George (3) shoots the ball over Denver Nuggets guard Julian Strawther (3) in the first half at Ball Arena. Mandatory Credit: Ron Chenoy-Imagn Images Utah wins this game if Denver refuses to defend the three point line like they have in their most disappointing losses this season. Markannen is still a three point sniping stretch big, Jordan Clarkson is still a microwave who can get hot and kill you from outside, Collin Sexton is shooting 43% from three this season and a number of the Jazz reserves are solid shooters as well. Utah is right in the middle of the pack in terms of threes made per game but just twenty-third overall for points in the paint. It should be Denver’s focus on defense tonight to run the Jazz off the three point line and make them force the issue inside.
The thing to remember: now is the time
The Nuggets have looked clunky to start the season. Nikola Jokic said recently though that while the team is a long way from where they need to be, they’re in a good spot all things considered. I think that’s dead on. Not making excuses but the fact of the matter is Denver’s early season schedule was pretty brutal, the back to back over the weekend was the first set of consecutive home games Denver has had since November 10th. Sixteen of their first thirty games are against teams that are in the top eight of the standings in their conference. They’ve played six back to backs (which ironically seems to help them). On top of that Jokic, Jamal Murray and Aaron Gordon have all missed multiple games. Outside of AG, Denver appears to be getting healthy and they’re currently in game three of a nine game stretch that has only two road games, neither against a team with a winning record. They’re currently 1-1 over that stretch. If Denver can go 6-3 during this period they’ll head in to an admittedly tough back half of January seven games over .500.
The thing to bet: Jamal Murray over 2.5 threes (+115)
Vegas is catching on to the fact that Jamal is figuring out. They’ve bumped his points line up to 23.5, but still haven’t bumped the 3 pointers line which is amazingly still giving out plus odds on over 2.5. Since Jamal returned from injury on December 13th he’s hit three or more three pointers in 4 of the seven games. The three he didn’t? The first game back from injury, the game he tweaked his ankle and the Christmas game where he played on said ankle that clearly wasn’t right. Since he’s returned he’s averaging six attempts a game and if we take out the Christmas outlier where he only attempted two that average goes up to almost seven attempts a game. So what are we asking here, do we think Jamal will go 3-7 from three? At +115 I’m taking that chance.
The Denver Nuggets are hitting the road for a quick trip to face off against the Utah Jazz in what promises to be an exciting matchup. Both teams are currently vying for a playoff spot in the competitive Western Conference, making this game a crucial one for their postseason hopes. The Nuggets will be looking to build on their recent success, as they have won four of their last five games. Led by All-Star center Nikola Jokic, Denver boasts a potent offense that ranks among the best in the league. Jokic has been putting up MVP-caliber numbers this season, averaging a double-double with over 26 points and 10 rebounds per game.
On the other side, the Jazz have been one of the top teams in the West all season long. Led by Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert, Utah has a strong defense and a high-powered offense that can light up the scoreboard on any given night.
This matchup between the Nuggets and Jazz is sure to be a thrilling one, as both teams have a lot on the line. Be sure to tune in and catch all the action as these two Western Conference contenders go head-to-head in what promises to be a high-stakes battle.

#Preview #Denver #Nuggets #quick #trip #play #Utah #JazzNuggets coach Michael Malone blasts Kings for Mike Brown firing: ‘No class, no balls’
The Sacramento Kings fired Mike Brown on Friday. He was just 31 games into his third season as head coach, and just two years removed from being named Coach of the Year after ending Sacramento’s 16-season playoff drought — as a No. 3 seed, no less — in 2022-23.
The Kings, after adding DeMar DeRozan this summer, as well as the heightened expectations a player of that caliber brings, have gotten off to a 13-18 start and have lost five straight, with the latest being a gut punch against Detroit when they coughed up a three-point lead in the closing seconds on a four-point play.
That wound up being the straw that broke Brown’s back, as ESPN reported that Brown was informed on a phone call as he was on his way to the airport to leave for Los Angeles, where the Kings are scheduled to play the Lakers on Saturday.
Many of Brown’s coaching compatriots expressed genuine shock in Sacramento’s decision to fire Brown. Pacers coach Rick Carlisle, who described Brown as “one of the standard bearers for integrity for our profession,” and Warriors coach Steve Kerr both called the Kings’ decision to fire Brown “shocking,” and it was clear in comments made by fellow coaches Tom Thibodeau, Jamahl Mosley and Jordi Fernandez, who called Brown “one of the best,” that pretty much nobody agrees with this decision.
But none of them went as far as Nuggets coach Michael Malone, who was fired by the Kings in 2014 just 24 games into his second season as the team’s coach and went full scorched earth on his former employer (particularly Kings owner Vivek Ranadive, though he didn’t name him directly) when he was asked about Brown’s firing.
“We’re going into a [Nuggets coaches] meeting this afternoon … I’m not on social media. I’m not aware of what’s going on outside these walls sometimes. It’ll probably take off six years of my life,” Malone began. “I go into the meeting and the coaches say, ‘you hear about Mike Brown?’ I said, ‘why, what happened?’ They said he got fired.
“At first I was really shocked and surprised,” Malone continued. “Then I caught myself. I said, why am I shocked and surprised? [I’m not] for two reasons. One, because as an NBA head coach, ultimately, you’re going to get the blame. When [the Kings’ win, [the credit is] gonna go to [De’Aaron] Fox and [Domantas] Sabonis, and when [they] lose, the [blame] is gonna go to Mike Brown. That’s the way it works.
“And two, who [Brown] works for,” Malone concluded as he launched his shot at the Kings. “So I’m not surprised that Mike Brown got fired, because I got fired by the same person. And what really pissed me off about it was the fact that [the Kings] lost last night, fifth game in a row, I believe. Tough loss, fouling a jump shooter. They had practiced this morning. He does his media, and he’s in his car going to the airport to fly to L.A. and they call him on the phone [and tell him he’s fired]. No class. No balls. That’s what I’ll say about that.”
Malone clearly has some hard feelings about his time, and the way it ended, in Sacramento, and he has a point. Yes, NBA coaches are, for the most part, hired with the expectation that they will one day, probably fairly soon, be fired. It’s not fair, but it’s the way it works. The coach is the easiest variable to change when things are going poorly. You can’t just get rid of players.
But there’s a classier way to do it than on the phone, especially after you let the guy go through a practice and head off to the airport to fly to the next game. The Kings were a mess before Brown showed up. You can, if you’d like, blame him for the fact that Kevin Huerter and Keegan Murray have seemingly forgotten how to shoot for the bulk of this season, or that the Kings have gone 3-11 in games decided by five or fewer points, but Brown deserved to be talked to face to face. Through that lens, it’s hard to argue with Malone’s point.
In a recent post-game press conference, Denver Nuggets head coach Michael Malone didn’t hold back when asked about the Sacramento Kings’ decision to fire assistant coach Mike Brown. Malone, who previously served as head coach of the Kings from 2013 to 2014, expressed his displeasure with the way the organization handled Brown’s dismissal.Malone began by saying, “I have no respect for the way the Kings handled the situation. It’s a lack of class and a lack of balls to fire a coach mid-season like that.” He went on to criticize the Kings for not giving Brown a fair chance to prove himself and for creating unnecessary drama within the team.
Malone’s comments have sparked a debate among NBA fans and analysts, with some agreeing with his sentiment and others arguing that coaching changes are a common occurrence in the league. Regardless of where you stand on the issue, one thing is clear: Malone’s strong words have certainly brought attention to the situation in Sacramento.

Nuggets’ Malone says Kings showed ‘no class’ in firing Brown
Denver Nuggets coach Michael Malone didn’t hold back in his reaction to the news of Sacramento Kings coach Mike Brown’s firing, ripping the team and owner Vivek Ranadive for exhibiting “no class.”
The Kings, off to a 13-18 start this season and mired in 12th place in the Western Conference, announced the firing Friday, calling it a “difficult decision.”
Malone is no stranger to the Kings, whom he coached for two seasons. He was fired by Ranadive in December 2014, and Brown was the sixth coach to hold that job in the decade since Malone’s departure.
Malone said Brown’s firing didn’t surprise him because of “who he works for.”
“I’m not surprised that Mike Brown got fired, because I got fired by the same person,” Malone said. “And what really pissed me off about it was the fact that they lost [Thursday] night, fifth game in a row, I believe. Tough loss. … They had practiced this morning. He does his postgame media, and he’s in his car going to the airport to fly to L.A. and they call him on the phone.
“No class, no balls. That’s what I’ll say about that.”
Malone was among several NBA coaches who reacted with dismay over Brown’s firing.
Indiana Pacers coach Rick Carlisle addressed it to open his pregame media session before his team visited Boston on Friday night. He called the firing “shocking to me and I’m sure all the people in our profession.”
“I had the privilege of working with Mike when I was in Indiana coaching the first time,” said Carlisle, who also is longtime president of the National Basketball Coaches Association. “I view him as one of the standard bearers for integrity for our profession. And I’m just absolutely shocked that that decision was made.”
Orlando Magic coach Jamahl Mosley said coaches understand the job is often thankless and that when a team underachieves there’s a risk of being fired. He said it’s not his place to discuss another team’s decision-making but made clear what he thinks of Brown as a coach and a person.
“He compiled a record of 107-88 while he was there,” Mosley said. “He changed a bit of that culture in what he was doing. And I say these things not as a fellow coach. I say this as a close friend. He’s been a mentor of mine. And I know how good he is, and I know how he cares, and I know how he’s helped pave the way for so many of us that are in this game right now.”
Brown was the unanimous winner of the NBA Coach of the Year award in 2022-23, after his first season in Sacramento saw the Kings make the playoffs for the first time since 2006. All 100 voters from a panel of reporters and broadcasters had Brown atop their ballot that year.
Less than two years later, he is gone.
“You hate to see it,” said New York Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau, who, like Brown, is a two-time NBA Coach of the Year. “You know, it’s part of what we go through. Mike’s a terrific person and a great coach. It’s unfortunate.”
Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr said he understood the Kings were struggling of late but still expressed disappointment that Brown — his former assistant and a longtime close friend — was let go.
“We all kind of know, this is the nature of the business,” Kerr said. “It just seems so shocking when a guy’s the unanimous Coach of the Year a year and a half ago, and when you think about where that franchise was before Mike got there … really shocking.”
Brown’s dismissal is the ninth head-coaching change in the NBA in 2024 alone — and the 300th in the NBA since Gregg Popovich, the league’s longest-tenured current coach, took the San Antonio Spurs job in 1996. Popovich is currently away from the Spurs while recovering from a stroke.
Brown has had four jobs in that span — he was head coach in Cleveland, then of the Los Angeles Lakers, then returned to Cleveland, and until Friday had the job in Sacramento.
“He’ll certainly land on his feet,” Carlisle said. “But if you look at the job that he did and the turnaround that he had, it’s just really hard to believe that this decision was made. But teams have the right to do things like this, obviously. It’s their decision. But Mike’s a great man and a great basketball man. Really one of the pillars of our profession. Anyway. Onward.”
The Associated Press contributed to this report.
Denver Nuggets head coach Michael Malone recently spoke out against the Sacramento Kings’ decision to fire head coach Alvin Gentry, calling the move “classless” and lacking in professionalism. In a post-game press conference, Malone criticized the Kings for their handling of Gentry’s firing, stating that the organization showed “no class” in how they went about making the change. Malone expressed his disappointment in the Kings’ decision, emphasizing the need for teams to show respect and dignity when parting ways with coaching staff.
Malone’s comments come at a time when the NBA coaching carousel is in full swing, with several teams making coaching changes in the middle of the season. The Nuggets coach’s remarks shed light on the behind-the-scenes politics and tensions that can arise in the high-stakes world of professional basketball.
As the NBA continues to evolve and teams look for ways to stay competitive, Malone’s words serve as a reminder of the importance of professionalism and respect in the industry. It remains to be seen how the Kings will respond to Malone’s criticism, but one thing is clear – the world of professional sports is never short on drama.

What to Know
The Nuggets are 8-2 against the Pistons since February of 2020, and they’ll have a chance to extend that success on Saturday. Having just played yesterday, the Denver Nuggets will get right back to it and host the Detroit Pistons at 9:00 p.m. ET at Ball Arena. The Nuggets are strutting in with some offensive muscle as they’ve averaged 119.6 points per game this season.
The Nuggets’ offense and defense might be a bit winded after their high-scoring matchup with the Cavaliers on Friday. The Nuggets took a 149-135 bruising from the Cavaliers. Denver has now taken an ‘L’ in back-to-back games.
The Nuggets might have lost, but man, Nikola Jokic was a machine: he dropped a triple-double on 27 points, 14 rebounds, and 13 assists. The game was Jokic’s fifth in a row with at least 30 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Jamal Murray, who dropped a double-double on 27 points and 11 assists.
Meanwhile, the Pistons had already won two in a row and they went ahead and made it three on Thursday. They skirted by Sacramento 114-113 thanks to a clutch free throw from Jaden Ivey with 3 seconds left in the fourth quarter. The win was all the more spectacular given Detroit was down by 19 with 10:12 left in the third quarter.
Among those leading the charge was Cade Cunningham, who dropped a double-double on 33 points and ten assists. The Pistons are 5-2 when Cunningham posts 20 or more points, but 9-15 otherwise.
Denver’s defeat ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 16-13. As for Detroit, their victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 14-17.
Looking forward, the Nuggets are the favorite in this one, as the experts expect to see them win by 5.5 points. Against the spread, they have been a house darling this year with a chancy 11-17 ATS record.
The Nuggets strolled past the Pistons in their previous meeting back in January by a score of 131-114. Do the Nuggets have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Pistons turn the tables on them? We’ll have the answer soon enough.
Odds
Denver is a solid 5.5-point favorite against Detroit, according to the latest NBA odds.
The oddsmakers were right in line with the betting community on this one, as the game opened as a 5.5-point spread, and stayed right there.

Extracted from the mountains and dropped in the desert, they couldn’t find any flow in a 110-100 loss to the Suns.
Bradley Beal and Kevin Durant combined for 52 points with impressive shot-making inside the arc, and Denver’s offense had an uncharacteristic dud at Footprint Center. In a grudge match after their 27-point rout Monday at Ball Arena, the Nuggets (16-12) turned it over 16 times in the final game of the NBA’s 10-hour holiday slate.
Nikola Jokic led the Nuggets with 25 points, but he was held to 10 after the first quarter.
Everything was going in for him early. The Nuggets ran their offense through Michael Porter Jr. for the first five minutes, then after Malone took his first timeout, they isolated Jokic on the right wing. He knocked down an 18-footer and gained momentum from there, scoring 15 in the last 6:46 of the frame on 6-of-7 shooting. He helped tag Jusuf Nurkic with another two early fouls. He converted an and-one after collecting one of Russell Westbrook’s best bounces passes of the year, blindly wrapping it around an unsuspecting Mason Plumlee.
The problem was that everything was going in for Phoenix, too. On Monday, the Suns’ 90 points were the fewest Denver had allowed all season. On Wednesday, their 38 by the end of the first quarter were a product of their 6-for-7 start from the 3-point line, where Denver was giving open looks.
The Suns cooled down in the second, and Denver survived Jokic’s rest minutes with a minus-two, highlighted by a pair of lobs to DeAndre Jordan and a jarring one-handed put-back jam for Julian Strawther. When Jokic rejoined, he had cooled off as well. The rim was stubborn with his right-wing 3-point attempts, where he’s been used to seeing nothing but net this season. The Nuggets didn’t have a consistent source of secondary creation. Porter was the their only other double-digit scorer at the half with 11, most of which had been piled up in the disorganized early minutes. Jamal Murray was looking to pass.
Eventually, that caught up with Denver. Attempts to force-feed Jokic resulted in bad-pass turnovers. He appeared frustrated, and he also got sloppy with the ball. The Nuggets were held to 22 points in both the second and third quarters, falling behind 85-78 as Jokic went back to the bench for a dreaded stretch.
That’s when Murray started hunting his shot more to keep Denver in it. He was able to for a couple of minutes, but rebounding breakdowns at the other end turned into multiple second-chance jumpers for Phoenix. Malone tried to get Jokic to the table just inside of the eight-minute mark, but the officials didn’t let him check in as the Suns inbounded. The next possession: An offensive rebound, a 3-pointer and a timeout, down 11.
Shortly after powering his way to a layup during the third quarter, Aaron Gordon went into the huddle for a timeout shaking his head. He went to the end of the bench and had a word with team trainers, then didn’t end up returning due to calf tightness. Gordon missed a 10-game stretch earlier this season with a calf strain.
The Denver Nuggets came up short in their Christmas Day matchup against the Phoenix Suns, falling 108-98 in a game that saw their offense struggle to find its rhythm.Despite strong performances from Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray, the Nuggets were plagued by sloppy play throughout the game. Turnovers were a major issue for Denver, as they committed 17 on the night, leading to easy points for the Suns in transition.
The Nuggets also struggled to knock down shots from beyond the arc, shooting just 31% from three-point range. Their lack of outside shooting allowed the Suns to pack the paint and limit scoring opportunities for Jokic and the rest of the team.
Overall, it was a disappointing performance for the Nuggets, who were unable to capitalize on their home court advantage and fell to a tough Suns team. They will need to clean up their offensive execution if they hope to bounce back in their next game.
