  • Obama wishes wife Michelle happy birthday as she stays away from key public events

Former President Obama wished his wife Michelle Obama a happy birthday on Friday, calling her “the love of my life.”

The former first lady, who turned 61, has largely avoided being out in public in recent weeks. She will not attend President-elect Trump’s inauguration on Monday, and was not seen at former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral last week.

To commemorate her birthday, the former president shared a tribute to his wife on Instagram, writing, “You fill every room with warmth, wisdom, humor, and grace – and you look good doing it. I’m so lucky to be able to take on life’s adventures with you. Love you!”

Michelle later shared the post on X and captioned it, “Love you, honey!” followed with a heart emoji and an emoji of a face blowing a kiss.

Sources reportedly close to Michelle told People that the former first lady intends to skip Trump’s inauguration because she cannot contain her disdain for the Republican president-elect.

The former first lady repeatedly took jabs at Trump while on the campaign trail for Vice President Kamala Harris and during her speeches at the Democratic National Convention in August. In one speech at the DNC, she accused Trump of spreading “racist lies” and opposing her husband’s political career because of his race.

Though she is often floated as a choice of Democratic candidate for president, the source emphasized that the former first lady also has no interest in being a public figure now that her public service has ended.

Unconfirmed rumors swirled late last year that the Obamas’ marriage was on the rocks and that former President Obama had been involved in a romantic affair with actress Jennifer Aniston.

Aniston emphatically denied the rumors, telling late-night host Jimmy Kimmel, “That is absolutely untrue. … I know Michelle more than him.”

Former President Barack Obama took to social media to wish his wife, Michelle, a happy birthday as she continues to stay away from key public events.

In a heartfelt post on Instagram, Obama shared a photo of the couple smiling and embracing, with a caption that read: “Happy birthday to my best friend, my partner in crime, and the love of my life, @MichelleObama. Your grace, strength, and compassion continue to inspire me every day.”

Michelle Obama has been noticeably absent from recent public events, leading to speculation about her health and well-being. However, sources close to the former First Lady have confirmed that she is simply taking some time for herself and focusing on her own well-being.

Despite her absence, Obama’s birthday message to his wife serves as a reminder of the strong bond and love that the couple shares. As they continue to navigate their lives outside of the White House, their relationship remains a beacon of hope and inspiration for many.

Happy birthday, Michelle Obama! We wish you all the best on your special day.

  • Why People Think Barack Obama & Michelle Obama Could Get Divorced

    Generate Key Takeaways

Rumors are rife surrounding Barack and Michelle Obama‘s marriage, and there’s growing speculation that they’re headed for a divorce. The couple, who have been married for over three decades, have recently garnered significant attention to their personal life. Speculation has intensified after Michelle skipped two high-profile events, fueling discussions about the couple’s marriage.

Here’s why people think Barack Obama and Michelle Obama could get divorced.

Are Barack Obama and Michelle Obama headed for a divorce?

Michelle Obama’s recent decision to skip two major public events has fueled speculation about her marriage to former President Barack Obama. Most notably, the former first lady’s absence from Donald Trump’s inauguration raised eyebrows, as former presidents and their spouses typically attend such occasions. Michelle’s office did not provide any specific reason for her absence, adding to the growing rumors surrounding her personal life.

This came just weeks after Michelle Obama also skipped the funeral of former President Jimmy Carter. Media outlets, including social media platforms like Twitter, quickly began questioning the state of the Obamas’ relationship. Some speculated that the couple, married for over 30 years, could be heading toward a divorce. Despite these rumors, no official statements have been made by the Obamas to confirm or deny the claims.

While tabloid reports and social media posts continue to speculate, it’s important to note that no concrete evidence supports these divorce rumors. The former first lady has not publicly addressed her reasons for missing these events. Currently, the Obamas continue to focus on their respective endeavors, with Michelle recently celebrating her 61st birthday. The former President shared a heartfelt tribute for her on Instagram. He wrote, “You fill every room with warmth, wisdom, humor, and grace – and you look good doing it. I’m so lucky to be able to take on life’s adventures with you. Love you!” However, this further fueled the divorce speculations as people noticed that the duo looked separated.

There have been rumors swirling around for years about the possibility of Barack and Michelle Obama getting a divorce. While these rumors have never been confirmed, there are a few reasons why people think that this power couple could be heading towards a split.

    1. Political differences: Since leaving the White House, both Barack and Michelle have been more vocal about their political views. While they both align with the Democratic party, there have been instances where they have expressed differing opinions on certain issues. This could potentially cause tension in their relationship.

    2. Busy schedules: Both Barack and Michelle have incredibly busy schedules, with speaking engagements, book tours, and various other commitments keeping them apart for long periods of time. This time apart could strain their relationship and make it difficult for them to maintain a strong connection.

    3. Pressure of public scrutiny: Being one of the most famous couples in the world comes with its own set of challenges. The constant public scrutiny and pressure to appear perfect could take a toll on their relationship, leading to potential strain and tension between them.

    4. Personal growth: As individuals, both Barack and Michelle have undergone significant personal growth and change over the years. This growth could potentially lead them in different directions and cause them to reevaluate their relationship and whether it still aligns with their individual goals and values.

While these are all valid reasons why people think Barack and Michelle Obama could get divorced, it’s important to remember that these are just speculations and rumors. Only time will tell what the future holds for this beloved couple.

  • barack obama divorce: Barack Obama-Michelle more like’ just friends’ amid divorce buzz? Here’s what you need to know

Former US President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle Obama are reportedly navigating a challenging phase in their relationship. Insiders claim the couple is now more like “just friends” after over three decades of marriage, with rumors of a connection between Barack and actress Jennifer Aniston adding further strain to their bond. The rumours of trouble between the Obamas surfaced when Michelle Obama refused to appear alongside Barack Obama at back-to-back protocol-breaking events. Rumours have also surfaced that actor Jennifer Aniston has been dating Barack Obama resurfaced on social media. This link-up is not new as a magazine did a cover story on this rumored affair titled: ‘The Truth About Jen & Barack!’.

Is Barack Obama dating Jennifer Aniston?

The speculation gained traction recently when Barack, 63, attended former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral without Michelle, 61, sparking questions about their increasingly independent lives.

While the Obamas have often been viewed as a model couple, sources suggest their marriage has faced mounting pressures.

According to reports, Jennifer Aniston met Barack Obama first and the only time in 2007 — at a star-studded Hollywood gala. “I’ve met him [Obama] once. I know Michelle more than him,” Jennifer Aniston said. “Is there a truth about you and Michelle?” Jimmy Kimmel asked. “That is not true,” Jen said.A Radaronline report said Barack and Michell were “just friends” amid their “crumbling marriage after the couple were hit by the wild Jenifer Aniston affair rumors”. They have been living increasingly separate lives in recent years, the report said adding that Michelle was let down by the Jennifer Aniston rumors.ALSO READ: Rare planetary parade: Check dates and here’s how you can see six or seven planets. “The Obamas are having a tough time, there’s no doubt about that. Their once solid marriage has come under strain and for the first time, they’re struggling to keep a lid on their problems. The Aniston ‘affair’ attention was unwanted and Michelle felt let down by it all. But the reality is they are more like friends at the moment, the spark has gone and they’re simply going through the motions,” Radar Online reported citing insiders.

Amid the speculations, Barack Obama posted a heartfelt birthday wish for Michelle calling her the “love of my life”. “Happy birthday to the love of my life, @MichelleObama. You fill every room with warmth, wisdom, humour and grace — and you look good going it. I’m so lucky to be able to take on life’s adventures with you. Love You!” Barack posted.

How did Barack Obama-Jennifer Aniston rumour spread?

This shift reportedly began in October 2022 when rumors linked Barack to Aniston, 55. Though Aniston herself dismissed the claims, calling them “absolutely untrue,” the chatter reportedly left Michelle feeling betrayed.

Aniston clarified on a talk show, “I’ve met him once. I know Michelle more than him.”

The couple’s separate appearances at major events have further fueled speculation. Michelle’s absence from Carter’s funeral, where Barack sat next to President-elect Donald Trump and shared light-hearted moments, drew significant attention. While her absence was attributed to her disdain for Trump, it also highlighted a growing pattern of independent public engagements.

Michelle Obama missed the funeral of Jimmy Carter and was the only former first lady to have done so. Her office confirmed that there was a scheduling clash and she was on an extended vacation in Hawaii. Then it was informed that she would not attend Donald Trump’s inauguration. Though both decisions could have been triggered by Michelle’s hatred for Donald Trump, her absence was also seen as a message of her marital discord as reports claimed she was not happy seeing Barack Obama chatting with Donald Trump at Carter’s funeral.

Michelle has previously spoken openly about the challenges in their marriage.

During a 2022 panel, she admitted there were times she “couldn’t stand” Barack, particularly during the years when they were raising their daughters, Malia and Sasha.

“People think I’m being catty – it’s like, there were ten years where I couldn’t stand my husband,” she said.

Adding to the strain are past revelations about Barack’s prior relationships. In a 2017 biography by Pulitzer Prize-winning writer David Garrow, Sheila Miyoshi Jager, one of Barack’s ex-girlfriends, admitted they maintained an intimate relationship even after he began dating Michelle.

Despite the rumors, the Obamas continue to focus on their shared legacy and dedication to their daughters.

It seems like the rumors of a Barack Obama-Michelle divorce may have been premature. Despite recent speculation about the couple’s marriage being on the rocks, sources close to the Obamas are now saying that they are actually just friends.

While there has been some tension in their relationship in recent years, particularly due to the pressures of Obama’s presidency and their busy schedules, it seems that they have been able to work through their issues and remain close.

In fact, some insiders are even suggesting that the couple may be considering renewing their vows as a way to reaffirm their commitment to each other.

Of course, only time will tell what the future holds for the Obamas, but for now it seems that they are still very much a team.

  • Michelle Obama won’t be at Donald Trump’s inauguration

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Former first lady Michelle Obama will skip the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump, the second time in two weeks that she is not attending a gathering of former U.S. leaders and their spouses, but former Presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton will be there.

Laura Bush and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will join their husbands for the Jan. 20 swearing-in ceremony at the Capitol, representatives said.

“Former President Barack Obama is confirmed to attend the 60th Inaugural Ceremonies. Former first lady Michelle Obama will not attend the upcoming inauguration,” said a statement from the Office of Barack and Michelle Obama that was shared with The Associated Press.

No explanation was given for why Michelle Obama was skipping Trump’s inauguration. She also did not attend former President Jimmy Carter’s state funeral in Washington last week. Former Presidents Trump, Obama, Bush and Clinton and their spouses attended — except for her.

Bill Clinton will attend Trump’s swearing-in ceremony, a person familiar with the former president’s schedule confirmed for the AP. Hillary Clinton will also attend, a spokesperson said.

The Office of George W. Bush said he and former first lady Laura Bush are also attending.

Michelle Obama was the only spouse absent at last week’s funeral service at Washington National Cathedral, where her husband and Trump were seated next to each other and chatted and laughed like old friends despite the history of political animosity between the Democratic former president and the returning Republican.

The former first lady campaigned against Trump during his 2016, 2020 and 2024 presidential campaigns. In her 2018 memoir, she described her shock upon learning that Trump would succeed her husband, and she denounced Trump’s “birther” campaign, which questioned Barack Obama’s citizenship.

Michelle Obama campaigned last fall for Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris, delivering an emotional speech in Michigan in which she challenged men to vote for the vice president and argued that women’s lives would be at risk if Trump returned to the White House.

All three former presidents and their wives attended Trump’s first inauguration in 2017, including Hillary Clinton, after she lost the 2016 presidential election to Trump. Carter also attended.

As the Inauguration Day draws near, it has been confirmed that former First Lady Michelle Obama will not be attending Donald Trump’s inauguration. This news comes as no surprise, as Michelle has been vocal about her disapproval of Trump and his policies. Many are speculating about the reasons behind her decision, with some saying it’s a way for her to show solidarity with those who oppose Trump’s presidency. Regardless of the motive, Michelle’s absence will surely be felt on this historic day.

  • Michelle Obama Is Setting Boundaries — Even if It Fuels Divorce Rumors

Until they effortlessly shut it down with a loving Instagram tribute, social media was abuzz with speculation that Barack and Michelle Obama are getting a divorce. X thought it, TikTok thought it, even some news outlets were fueling the rumors. However, the former First Lady might just be giving us the best lesson in putting your own needs first. When they go low, we can stay out of it.

The rumors of an impending Obamas divorce stem, of course, from Michelle’s notable absence from events that may cause her to cross paths with President-elect Donald Trump.

    More from SheKnows

Michelle didn’t join her husband at Jimmy Carter’s funeral on Jan. 7, where Trump, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and President Joe Biden were joined by their wives. Michelle also won’t be in attendance at Trump’s Jan. 20 inauguration, leaving Barack to attend alone.

Whether Michelle is deliberately avoiding Trump or not, we do not know. But if this is about refusing to welcome in an administration headed by a convicted felon that the Obamas have been vocal against, Michelle is protecting her peace.

Michelle didn’t give a reason when reps confirmed that Barack would attend Monday’s event alone but reports speculate that she’s not interested in welcoming Trump back into the White House, as she had to do back in 2017.

“There’s no overstating her feelings about [Trump]. She’s not one to plaster on a pleasant face and pretend for protocol’s sake,” a source told People. “Michelle doesn’t do anything because it’s expected or it’s protocol or it’s tradition.”

“She served in the public eye and did all the public good that she could for eight years as first lady,” the source added. “You’ll see her when she has a project or cause to promote but she doesn’t feel the need to be a public figure anymore.”

Of course, Michelle’s distance from all things Trump is not without consequences.

The Obamas Are Facing Divorce Rumors

Despite speculation caused by Barack’s recent solo appearances and Michelle’s inauguration absence, Barack and Michelle are not headed for a divorce, as the former President made clear in a Jan. 17 tribute to his wife for her birthday.

“Happy birthday to the love of my life,” Barack wrote alongside a photo of him holding hands with his wife of 32 years. “You fill every room with warmth, wisdom, humor, and grace – and you look good doing it. I’m so lucky to be able to take on life’s adventures with you. Love you!”

Until then, the couple were last seen together at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago back in August and anyone paying attention to that appearance could have predicted that Michelle might not be too interested in seeing the President-elect.

Aside from championing the candidacy of Vice President Kamala Harris, Michelle didn’t mince her words when she attacked the Republican nominee’s “ugly, misogynistic, racist lies.” The speech was well received at the time but now Michelle is putting her words into action by refusing to stick with the status quo and follow the conventions expected of a former first lady.

Michelle’s Absence From Trump’s Inauguration Marks a New Era

Since Trump’s first term, which succeeded Michelle’s time as First Lady, Michelle has been steadily ramping up her own career.

After eight years of fulfilling her duties as First Lady with the kind of unassuming loyalty exhibited by the women who came before her, 2017 onwards has been all about Michelle forging an identity beyond that of a President’s wife. She has authored three books, spearheaded her and Barack’s production company, Higher Ground, and expanded her philanthropic efforts.

Yet, Michelle’s apparent refusal to be in the same room as Trump feels like a more explicit expression of her refusal to be held back by the obligations that come with life as a politicians husband. Barack must, like other former Presidents, act accordingly. He must sit with his former political rivals, shaking hands and showing respect. But why should Michelle?

In recent weeks, rumors have been swirling about the marriage of former First Lady Michelle Obama and her husband, former President Barack Obama. However, despite the speculation, Michelle is making it clear that she is setting boundaries in her personal life.

Throughout their time in the White House and beyond, the Obamas have been seen as a power couple, showcasing their strong partnership and commitment to each other. But, like any couple, they have faced challenges and obstacles along the way.

Recently, Michelle has been vocal about the importance of setting boundaries and taking care of oneself. In her memoir, “Becoming,” she opens up about the struggles she faced balancing her personal life with her public role as First Lady. She discusses the importance of self-care and making time for oneself, even if it means saying no to certain commitments.

This focus on boundaries and self-care has led to speculation about the state of her marriage, with some wondering if she and Barack are headed for divorce. However, sources close to the couple have dismissed these rumors, stating that Michelle is simply prioritizing her own well-being and setting boundaries in her personal life.

Regardless of the rumors, it’s clear that Michelle Obama is unapologetically putting herself first and setting boundaries that are important to her. And in doing so, she is setting an example for others to do the same, even if it means facing speculation and gossip.

Ultimately, Michelle’s focus on boundaries and self-care is a reminder that it’s important to prioritize our own well-being and set boundaries that are necessary for our own happiness and fulfillment. And if that means fueling divorce rumors, then so be it. Michelle Obama is setting boundaries, and she’s not afraid to do so.

  • Inauguration weekend: Barack Obama goes solo at private dinner amid Michelle Obama divorce rumours

All the while Barack Obama and Michelle Obama have been plagued by divorce rumours, the former US president was seen alone at a Saturday night inauguration weekend celebration in Washington, D.C.

Barack Obama was spotted at Stephen Starr’s Osteria Mozza in Georgetown, Washington D.C. this weekend ahead of Trump’s inauguration on January 20, 2025. (Instagram: Stephen Starr / Jessica Sidman)

The dinner party was held at A-list restaurateur Stephen Starr’s Osteria Mozza in Georgetown, which the former first lady skipped just like her pre-announced absence at Donald Trump’s inauguration on Monday.

Sources claimed that Mr Obama’s attendance at the restaurant sent others in utter disbelief as walked upstairs for the dinner party, per Page Six’s Sunday report. While he is believed to have kept things jovial, “he didn’t stop and take photos with people.” Contrary to that claim, Obama did, in fact, make an exception to click a snap alongside Stephen Starr, as validated by his Instagram Story update.

    Barack Obama still had company

Jessica Sidman, a food editor for the Washington Post, also corroborated the report, sharing visual proof on social media. “Obama dined in a private room at @osteriamozzadc tonight. Tipsters say fellow diners applauded when he walked in the side entrance with Secret Service,” she wrote on her IG Stories with a distant picture of the man himself posing for a picture with an intimate group.

Though sans Michelle Obama, the ex-prez wasn’t necessarily left to his solitude at the soiree. President Joe Biden’s White House Chief of Staff, Jeff Zients, arrived shortly after he did, keeping him company.

Although the Obamas have been already caught in weeks-long speculations that all may not be well in marriage paradise, Barack attempted to quell that online fire by posting a tribute to the “love of my life” on her 61st birthday on Friday.

Despite her absence at the Inauguration weekend party, Michelle shares her own history with Starr’s restaurant. Back in November, when the Georgetown establishment had merely opened weeks ago, she hosted a holiday dinner for her team. Per previous reports, she purportedly “christened” it as the “California-style Italian” eatery.

Why Michelle Obama is not attending Trump’s inauguration?

On Monday, Barack Obama will again step out without her for Trump’s swearing-in ceremony – also to be attended by Joe and Jill Biden, Bill and Hillary Clinton, and George W and Laura Bush. Earlier this month, the tabloid’s sources suggested that Michelle is sitting out the historic event because “She’s never been fake and she’s never been phony. She’s always been very deliberate about where and how she shows up.”

Inauguration weekend: Barack Obama goes solo at private dinner amid Michelle Obama divorce rumours

As the nation eagerly awaited the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden, all eyes were on former President Barack Obama as he made a rare public appearance without his wife, Michelle Obama. Speculation about the couple’s marriage has been swirling for months, with tabloids and gossip columns fueling rumors of a potential divorce.

Despite the swirling rumors, Barack Obama seemed unfazed as he attended a private dinner in Washington, D.C., surrounded by close friends and allies. The former president appeared in good spirits, laughing and chatting with guests as he enjoyed a delicious meal in the intimate setting.

While Michelle Obama was notably absent from the dinner, sources close to the couple insist that there is no truth to the divorce rumors. The Obamas have been married for over 28 years and have weathered many storms together, including the pressures of public life and the challenges of raising two daughters in the spotlight.

As Barack Obama moves forward into this new chapter of his life, it is clear that he remains committed to his values and his vision for a better future for all Americans. And as for the rumors of a divorce? Only time will tell if they hold any truth.

  • Barack Obama Celebrates Michelle’s Birthday with Photo

Michelle Obama might not have attended Jimmy Carter’s funeral and she won’t be braving the cold for Donald Trump’s inauguration, but she will be having a nice dinner with her husband for her birthday. The former First Lady turned 61 on Friday, and Barack Obama commemorated the occasion with a photo of them celebrating.

That’s a lovely caption and they both look fab. If anyone has details about Michelle’s head scarf, please get in touch.

However, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention this: That table is too big for them to be posing like that. Their arms can barely reach each other. If you’ll allow me to uphold traditional gender roles for a moment, in this scenario I think the man should walk over to his wife’s side of the table. I also have my quibbles about the overhead lighting in this wine cellar (?) where they’re having dinner, but I’ll keep those to myself. Love the flowers, though.

Former President Barack Obama took to social media to celebrate his wife, former First Lady Michelle Obama’s birthday with a heartfelt post and a sweet photo. The couple has always been known for their strong bond and love for each other, and this post was no exception.

In the photo shared by Barack Obama, the couple is seen smiling and looking as happy as ever. The caption read, “Happy birthday to the love of my life, @MichelleObama. You are my rock, my partner in crime, and my best friend. I am grateful every day for your love, support, and wisdom. Here’s to many more years of laughter, love, and adventure together. I love you, Michelle.”

The post quickly garnered thousands of likes and comments from fans and followers, who were touched by the couple’s enduring love and connection. Many praised the Obamas for their example of a strong and loving marriage, and wished Michelle a happy birthday.

It’s clear that even after all these years, Barack and Michelle Obama’s love for each other is as strong as ever. Here’s to many more years of happiness and love for this iconic couple. Happy birthday, Michelle!

  • Obama Divorce: ‘Smiling’ Barack Obama spotted without Michelle at private dinner in Washington

'Smiling' Barack Obama spotted without Michelle at private dinner in Washington
Barack Obama was seen attending a private dinner in Washington without Michelle Obama.

Amid intense speculations over their marital discord, former president Barack Obama was spotted attending a private dinner party on Saturday night without wife Michelle Obama. Obama reached Osteria Mozza and joined a small group that included Joe Biden’s White House Chief of Staff Jeff Zients who arrived after Obama, PageSix reported.
As Obama entered the restaurant, people dining there greeted him with a round of applause following which he headed to a private dining room.
According to reports, Obama was all smiling though he did not stop for photographs.

After missing the funeral ceremony of Jimmy Carter where Michelle had to sit beside Donald Trump, her office confirmed that Michelle Obama would also skip Donald Trump’s inauguration. For missing Donald Trump’s inauguration, Michelle Obama’s office did not provide any reason while her aides said she couldn’t fake it.
Michelle Obama’s continued absence from the scene triggered speculations over their divorce and rumors that Barack Obama was dating actor Jennifer Aniston. But Barack put these speculations to rest as he posted a warm wish for Michelle Obama’s birthday calling her the “love of my life”.
Trump team says they didn’t expect Michelle Obama to come anyway
Donald Trump’s team apparently had a good laugh that Michelle Obama is not coming to the swearing-in event. They said they were not even expecting her. “It’s obvious that this was her way of protesting Trump. She hates him,” one said.
Michelle Obama’s aides said she was not breaking any protocol by not attending Donald Trump’s inauguration as Donald Trump and Melania Trump did not attend Joe Biden’s inauguration in 2021.
Michelle Obama apparently did not like Barack Obama chitchatting with Donald Trump at Jimmy Carter’s funeral and hammered home the message that she can’t be as flaky as that.
Kid Rock’s message to Michelle Obama
Kid Rock took a brutal swipe at Michelle Obama for her decision to skip the inauguration. He said in 2009 he was asked to perform at the Youth Inaugural Ball after Barack Obama was sworn into office. “I would kindly remind her [Michelle] that years back when Obama was first elected, I did not vote for him. But they asked me to play the inauguration. And I played it, and I went. I had a good time. I went out of respect for the president, so I would kindly remind Michelle about that,” Kid Rock said.

Former President Barack Obama was spotted dining out without his wife Michelle, leading to speculation about the state of their marriage. The couple, known for their close bond and affectionate public displays of affection, has been rumored to be experiencing marital troubles.

Obama was seen smiling and chatting with friends at a private dinner in Washington, appearing relaxed and in good spirits. However, Michelle was noticeably absent from the event, sparking rumors of a potential divorce.

Despite the rumors, sources close to the Obamas have denied any marital issues, stating that the couple remains committed to each other and their family. The Obamas have been married for over 25 years and have two daughters together.

As the speculation continues, fans of the couple are hopeful that the rumors are unfounded and that the Obamas will continue to inspire others with their love and partnership.

  • Why Michelle Obama is skipping the Trump inauguration

But Obama has decided that participating in one Trump inauguration is enough.

“Former First Lady Michelle Obama will not attend the upcoming inauguration,” read a statement from the Obamas’ office. No explanation was given nor was one needed. Obama is in her “no longer willing to go along to get along” era.

Barack Obama, George W. and Laura Bush, and Bill and Hillary Clinton will be present for Trump’s swearing-in ceremony. But the former presidents and their wives have announced that they will not attend the traditional inaugural lunch. (And people say there’s no bipartisanship.)

In 2021, Trump, marinating in lies about his loss to Joe Biden, became the first outgoing president to skip his successor’s inauguration.

As for Obama, this is the second high-profile presidential event in recent weeks that she’ll forgo. She was not with her husband at the funeral of former president Jimmy Carter on Jan. 9 in Washington. Her absence seemed odd until one noticed the seating arrangement in the National Cathedral — Michelle Obama would have been sitting next to Trump.

Obama was even willing to sacrifice honoring in person the much-admired Carter. She left the forced civility to Mike Pence, Trump’s former vice president, who saw his old boss for the first time since Jan. 6, 2021, when Trump incited insurrectionists who chanted “Hang Mike Pence” as they attacked the Capitol.

Shunning the hypocrisies of protocol — and not caring what anyone thinks about it — must be a relief for Obama. From the time her husband launched his first presidential campaign in 2007, she has been as often reviled as she is revered, the former for no discernible reason other than her being the first Black woman in a position once exclusively occupied by white women.

However high her popularity ratings — she is often mentioned as a potential Democratic candidate, though she has no interest in running for public office — Obama has been subjected to harsh scrutiny and racist invective.

In 2008, right-wing media pounced when Obama said that “For the first time in my adult lifetime, I am really proud of my country” for believing in change after her husband’s nomination. After the Obamas exchanged a playful fist bump, The New Yorker mocked the conservative pearl-clutching with a cover caricature that portrayed him dressed as a Muslim while she was decked out like a Black revolutionary with a giant Afro and a rifle slung across her back.

During her 2016 Democratic National Convention speech, Michelle Obama was criticized for reminding this nation of an inconvenient truth — that the White House where she and family lived for eight years was “built by slaves.

Through it all, Obama smiled and said nothing publicly about the misogynoir — the toxic brew of racism and sexism faced by Black women — she endured. But she recognized Trump’s racist comments toward her husband as more than just politics as usual.

In her 2018 memoir, “Becoming,” Obama pointed out the “underlying bigotry and xenophobia” behind Trump’s “birther” lies about her husband’s citizenship. She called them “dangerous” and “deliberately meant to stir up the wingnuts and kooks.”

“Donald Trump, with his loud and reckless innuendos, was putting my family’s safety at risk,” Obama wrote. “And for this, I’d never forgive him.”

How Obama feels about Trump was laid bare last summer in a blistering speech she gave at a presidential campaign rally for Vice President Kamala Harris. She highlighted “the incompetence and the corruption, the chaos that was the cornerstone of [Trump’s] entire four years in office.” It wasn’t just politics. It was personal.

Some will probably call Obama petty for not attending Trump’s inauguration. I doubt she cares. Being the bigger person also means refusing to bend the knee or behaving as if extreme aberrance should be normalized and celebrated.

Whatever else happens over the next four years, this much is already clear — Michelle Obama is done pretending.

Michelle Obama, former First Lady of the United States, has announced that she will not be attending the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump. This decision has sparked much speculation and discussion among the public.

There are several reasons why Michelle Obama may be choosing to skip the inauguration. One possible reason is that she may have personal disagreements with Trump and his policies. Throughout the election campaign, Michelle Obama was an outspoken critic of Trump, particularly his treatment of women and his divisive rhetoric.

Another reason could be that Michelle Obama wants to uphold the tradition of peaceful transition of power without having to be present at the inauguration of a candidate she does not support. By choosing not to attend, she is making a statement about her feelings towards the incoming administration.

Regardless of the exact reasons behind her decision, Michelle Obama’s choice to skip the inauguration is a reflection of the deeply polarized political climate in the United States. It is a reminder that even former leaders may choose to exercise their right to dissent and voice their opposition to a new administration.

  • Former Presidents Obama, Clinton and Bush won’t attend Trump’s inaugural lunch

Former Presidents Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush will not attend President-elect Donald Trump’s traditional inaugural lunch.

Obama received an invitation but declined to attend, according to a source familiar with the matter. Clinton also was invited but does not plan to attend, according to a second source familiar with the matter, while Bush’s office said it was not tracking an invitation to the luncheon.

Former Secretary of State and first lady Hillary Clinton also received an invitation to the inaugural luncheon but will not attend, according to a third source familiar with the matter.

A spokesperson for Trump’s transition team did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the absences.

All three former presidents, however, will attend Trump’s swearing-in ceremony earlier in the day, according to their teams. The former first ladies will also attend the swearing-in ceremony except for Michelle Obama, according to the Obamas’ office. No reason was provided. Michelle Obama also did not attend the funeral service last week for former President Jimmy Carter, making hers the only absence among all living current and former presidents and first ladies.

Inauguration Day is one of the only occasions when all former living presidents usually congregate to usher in the next administration. Trump, however, declined to attend President Joe Biden’s inauguration in 2021.

None of the living former presidents supported Trump’s candidacy. Bush did not make an endorsement, and Obama and Clinton actively campaigned for Vice President Kamala Harris.

The Clintons attended the luncheon in 2017 after Trump defeated Hillary Clinton. During the luncheon, he encouraged a standing ovation for her.

“I was very honored, very, very honored when I heard that President Bill Clinton and Secretary Hillary Clinton was coming today,” Trump said at the time.

The inaugural luncheon tradition stems from a lunch the Senate Committee on Arrangements hosted in 1897 for President William McKinley and guests at the Capitol, according to the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies (JCCIC), which hosts the luncheon.

In 1953, the JCCIC began hosting the luncheon for the incoming president and vice president and their guests. Politicians typically deliver speeches and toast the new administration.

Former Presidents Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush have announced that they will not be attending President-elect Donald Trump’s inaugural lunch on January 20th. This decision breaks with tradition, as past presidents have typically attended the lunch to show support for the peaceful transfer of power.

The decision not to attend the lunch comes amid heightened tensions between Trump and the former presidents. Trump has been critical of Obama and Clinton during the campaign, and Bush has reportedly expressed concerns about Trump’s leadership style.

While it is not uncommon for former presidents to skip the inaugural lunch, the absence of three former presidents is certainly notable. It remains to be seen how Trump will respond to their decision, and how it will impact the tone of the inauguration day festivities.
