GOP senator revives effort to make assaulting police a deportable offense: ‘We must act’
FIRST ON FOX: A Senate Republican is re-introducing legislation to make assaulting law enforcement a deportable offense for immigrants, amid a fresh immigration push in Congress.
Sen. Ted Budd, R-N.C., is re-introducing the Protect Our Law enforcement with Immigration Control and Enforcement (POLICE) Act.
The bill would explicitly make assaulting a law enforcement officer a deportable offense. The legislation struggled to advance in a Democratic-run Senate, and is expected to have a better chance at success now Republicans have a majority. There is a version in the House as well.

The bill says that any “alien who has been convicted of, who admits having committed, or who admits committing acts constituting the essential elements of, and offense involving the assault of a law enforcement officer is deportable.”
ICE made a number of arrests this week amid a renewed push by the Trump administration (X/ @BillMelugin_)
“One of the best ways we can support law enforcement officers, and protect the public, is by deporting dangerous people who do them harm. If a migrant commits the crime of assaulting an officer or other first responder, they should be subject to immediate deportation,” Budd said in a statement to Fox News Digital.
“Our lawmakers must always back the men and women who protect and serve our communities. We must act on this vital proposal.”

The bill has a dozen co-sponsors in the upper chamber, including Sens. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., Steve Daines R-Mont., Katie Britt, R-Ala.,, Ted Cruz, R-Texas,, and James Lankford R-Okla.

The bill emerged the same week that the Laken Riley Act, which requires the detention by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) of illegal immigrants charged with theft-related crimes, was sent to President Trump’s desk after passing both chambers of Congress with bipartisan support. Trump is expected to sign the measure.
Legislators have also introduced other anti-illegal immigrant measures, including bills to restore the Remain in Mexico program and to cut down on humanitarian parole and Temporary Protected Status.

Meanwhile, President Trump signed 10 executive orders on day one of his administration, including bills to send military to the border and declare a national emergency.

Federal agencies have been making similar moves, including reducing restrictions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers in sensitive areas and ordering a review of the use of parole by federal agencies.
In a recent move, a GOP senator has revived efforts to make assaulting police officers a deportable offense. Senator John Doe stated, “We must act to protect those who protect us every day. Assaulting a police officer is a heinous crime and should not be tolerated in our society.”This comes after a rise in attacks on law enforcement officers across the country, with many incidents leading to serious injuries or even death. The senator’s proposal would ensure that individuals who commit violent acts against police officers would face deportation, in addition to criminal charges.
Supporters of the measure argue that it is necessary to send a strong message that violence against law enforcement will not be tolerated. However, critics are concerned that such a policy could lead to increased racial profiling and further strain relations between communities and police.
It remains to be seen whether Senator Doe’s proposal will gain traction in Congress, but it is clear that the issue of protecting police officers is one that will continue to be debated in the coming months.

New Jaguars head coach Liam Coen will continue to call plays, mold offense around QB Trevor Lawrence

The Jacksonville Jaguars welcomed former Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen as their new head coach on Monday, and he confirmed he will maintain a key component of why he was hired as their head coach.
“Yes, we’ll absolutely be calling football plays,” Coen said when asked if he would be the team’s offensive play-caller.
Tampa Bay’s 2024 offense thrived under Coen: the Buccaneers had the league’s No. 4 scoring offense (29.5 points per game) and No. 3 total offense (399.6 yards per game). Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield, the 2018 NFL Draft’s top overall pick by the Cleveland Browns, produced career highs in completion percentage (71.4%), passing yards (4,500), passing yards per attempt (7.9), passing touchdowns (41) and passer rating (106.8) — all while bringing Coen’s playbook to life in 2024.
Now, Coen’s task is to maximize the potential of another first overall pick in the Jaguars’ Trevor Lawrence, who went No. 1 in the 2021 NFL Draft.
“How do we make Trevor Lawrence and this offense as dynamic and explosive as we can be? We’ve got to build it around him as well. We’ve got to make every part of this about improvement, and he will be a part of that process,” Coen said Monday. “He’s earned that right. I cannot respect his toughness and mentality and work ethic more than I do already from afar. This will all be about Trevor right now.”
Lawrence entered the NFL as one of the most heralded quarterback prospects in recent memory after leading the Clemson Tigers to consecutive national championship games in 2018 and 2019, including winning it all in 2018. The first task for Coen and whoever the Jaguars new general manger will be has to be simply keeping Lawrence upright by reinforcing his offensive line.
The 25-year-old Lawrence played a career-low 10 games in 2024 after suffering an AC joint sprain (shoulder) and a concussion. That was following a 2023 campaign in which he also battled both of those injuries as well as a high ankle sprain and a knee sprain.
The Jacksonville Jaguars made headlines this offseason with the hiring of new head coach Liam Coen, who will also be taking on the role of offensive play-caller for the team. Coen, who most recently served as the offensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams, is known for his innovative and aggressive play-calling style.One of Coen’s main priorities will be to mold the offense around second-year quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who showed flashes of brilliance in his rookie season. Lakers could sign former Celtics legendary scoring machine to bolster offense
As the Los Angeles Lakers seek to bolster their bench, they could take a hard look at a former Boston Celtics legend who is attempting an NBA return.
The Lakers have multiple roster needs, most notably at center, but no one in LA would complain if GM Rob Pelinka added some bench scoring to the mix.
LeBron James and Anthony Davis are always carrying a heavy load offensively, and while Austin Reaves has bloomed into a legitimate third star, the Lakers could use some pop off the bench for nights when Dalton Knecht and Co. are off.
Why not take a flyer on a 35-year-old veteran who once finished top five in NBA MVP voting?
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, former Boston Celtics guard Isaiah Thomas is available on the market.
“Two-time All-Star Isaiah Thomas is pursuing another NBA return, signing into the G League and rejoining the Utah Jazz’s Salt Lake City affiliate, sources tell ESPN,” Charania reported on Monday morning.
“Last season, Thomas averaged 33 points in four G League games en route to a call up to the Suns.”
Injuries have resulted in an up-and-down career for Thomas, no doubt, but when he’s on, it’s impossible for NBA defenses to keep Thomas out of the lane and off of the score sheet.
“IT” has been a problem for defenders since the moment he stepped on an NBA floor. He finished No. 7 in Rookie of the Year voting in 2012 after being selected with the last pick in the 2021 NBA draft by the Sacramento Kings. In his fourth NBA season, Thomas finished second in Sixth Man of the Year voting.
IT’s peak, of course, came on the Celtics. He was absurd during the 2016-17 season, averaging 28.9 points per game on the way to a top-five MVP voting result and an All-NBA Second Team selection.
Since then, Thomas’ body has betrayed him on multiple occasions, leading him to become an NBA journeyman of sorts. Thomas has already spent two stints with the Lakers (2018, 2021) in addition to stretches with the Phoenix Suns (2014-2015, 2024), Cleveland Cavaliers (2017-2018), Denver Nuggets (2018-2019), Washington Wizards (2019-2020), New Orleans Pelicans (2021), Dallas Mavericks (2021-2022), and Charlotte Hornets (2022).
As related by Charania, IT has also spent time in the G League, where he’s most recently dominated.
Thomas has always been a liability on defense, but he’s also always been a bucket.
If the Lakers don’t sign IT, someone else surely will give him a shot.

The Los Angeles Lakers are in desperate need of some offensive firepower, and they may have found the perfect solution in former Boston Celtics legend, Paul Pierce.Pierce, who spent the majority of his career with the Celtics, was known for his scoring ability and clutch performances in big moments. The Lakers, who have struggled to consistently put up points this season, could greatly benefit from adding a player of Pierce’s caliber to their roster.
While Pierce may be past his prime, his scoring touch and veteran leadership could provide a much-needed boost to the Lakers’ offense. With players like LeBron James and Anthony Davis already on the team, adding Pierce to the mix could create a formidable trio that would strike fear into opposing defenses.
Of course, signing Pierce would be contingent on his willingness to come out of retirement and play for the Lakers. But if he’s up for the challenge, there’s no doubt that he could make a significant impact on the team and help propel them to success in the upcoming season.
So, Lakers fans, keep your fingers crossed that the team can make this potential signing a reality. With Paul Pierce on board, the Lakers could be a force to be reckoned with in the NBA.

Magic land hometown star in new mock trade to save their offense
It’s no secret that offense is not the Magic’s strong suit. This current team, built around Paolo Banchero, Franz Wagner, and Jalen Suggs, excels on defense but relies heavily on Banchero and Wagner to carry the offensive production despite little spacing around them. All of those troubles have been amplified by the numerous injuries that hit the Magic this season.
Banchero and Wagner have barely even played together yet, which is one reason why the Magic currently have the second-worst offensive rating in the league. The Magic have struggled especially in their most recent games, hitting the 100-point mark only once in five straight losses.
Orlando has fallen to seventh place in the Eastern Conference and will have to find a way out of that hole to realize their goal of securing homecourt advantage in the playoffs. The Magic learned the hard way how important that can be last season, as the home team won every game in their seven-game series against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
There are several ways the Magic can approach this. They could simply wait to get healthy and see if having their core together once again can be enough to string together a bunch of wins and rise in the standings. Banchero and Wagner are both back on the court already, and Jalen Suggs and Goga Bitadze should hopefully return soon as well. Things are going to start looking much better, but the question is whether that is enough.
Mock trade has Magic make a move for Anfernee Simons
Another way to improve the Magic’s offense is to trade for an offensive-minded player. One mock trade recently proposed by Kevin O’Connor on The Bill Simmons Podcast has the Magic trading Cole Anthony, Jett Howard, and a first-round pick to the Portland Trail Blazers for Anfernee Simons.
Simons is a player that has been connected to the Magic for quite some time. The reasoning is that Simons likely needs to move to another team to truly flourish, and the Magic need a guard who can score and space the floor. Simons is not shooting it as well from three this season as in other seasons, but 36.9 percent on 8.1 attempts per game is still solid, especially for a Magic team desperate for any kind of production from deep. Plus, Simons is still only 25, fitting the Magic’s timeline very well, and grew up in the area.
Giving up Cole Anthony and Jett Howard for a player who could help the Magic take the next steps offensively is not a crazy price either. Anthony has been rather inconsistent this season, and Howard is still not a regular part of the Magic’s rotation.
On paper, Simons seems like a good fit in Orlando, and the fake trade is reasonable. The question is just whether the Magic would even consider making such a significant move ahead of the trade deadline. For one, the Magic are not known for their activity on the trade market unless absolutely necessary. Secondly, they have barely even gotten a chance to see Wagner and Banchero play together yet this season. In Banchero’s absence, Wagner played at an All-Star level. The Magic would likely prefer to see if he can do the same while the rest of the team is healthy before making any significant changes to the roster.
If the Magic make a move before the trade deadline, it will likely be for a role player who can space the floor rather than someone who would change the way they play. They need better 3-point shooting but do not necessarily have to go after someone like Simons, who would need a lot of touches, quite yet. A move like that probably makes more sense in the offseason.

Kliff Kingsbury and Patrick Mahomes in college: Revisiting Texas Tech’s ‘Air Raid’ offense led by Chiefs QB
Two NFL teams competing in their respective conference championship games — the Commanders and the Chiefs — share a special connection through Texas Tech.
While Washington and Kansas City won’t face off against each other Sunday, Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury and Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes share plenty of history.
The two joined forces for the Red Raiders, with Kingsbury as the head coach and Mahomes as his quarterback. Let’s revisit their history with one another, how much success they had together and more.

Did Kliff Kingsbury coach Patrick Mahomes at Texas Tech?
Yes, Kingsbury coached Mahomes during his tenure as head coach at Texas Tech.
Kingsbury was hired to coach the program in December 2012. Kingsbury played for the Red Raiders from 1998-2002.
Texas Tech offered Mahomes, a three-star quarterback recruit, in January 2013. Kingsbury reportedly heard about Mahomes from the previous Tech coaching staff and immediately recruited him after watching his high school tape.
“I could see what I thought he could be,” Kingsbury said via ESPN in 2022. “… I loved how he’d extend plays and I don’t think anybody thought he’d still be doing it at this level the way he does it. But he has a special knack at it, probably the best ever at doing it.
“We went after him hard and knew that we needed to get him.”
Mahomes played his senior season at Whitehouse High School in Texas during the 2013 season. He won the Texas AP Player of the Year award as a senior, and he signed with Tech’s 2014 recruiting class while Kingsbury was leading the Red Raiders to an 8-5 record during his first season in 2013.
As a true freshman in Lubbock in 2014, Mahomes played in seven games with seven starts. Although the Red Raiders struggled and finished 4-8 that season, Mahomes threw for 1,547 yards with 16 touchdowns and just four interceptions.
Mahomes won the starting job for the 2015 season. He had a breakout year, throwing for 4,653 yards with 36 touchdowns and 15 interceptions, adding 456 yards with 10 scores that season. Tech finished 7-6 that season. Mahomes became one of just five quarterbacks in FBS history to pass for 4,000 yards and 30 touchdowns while rushing for at least 450 yards with 10 scores, and he set a Tech single-season record for passing yards.
But that wasn’t even close to what he did during his 2016 season. Mahomes had an even better junior year, throwing for 5,052 yards, an FBS-leading 41 touchdowns and 10 interceptions, plus 260 yards rushing and 12 scores. He was the first Tech signal-caller to lead the nation in passing yards since Graham Harrell in 2008 and — wait for it — Kingsbury in 2002.
Mahomes also set NCAA records, most notably in a game against Oklahoma in 2016. Tech was facing its former quarterback in Baker Mayfield, who transferred from Tech in 2014, after somewhat of a beef developed between the quarterback and Kingsbury during the 2013 season.
Mayfield and Mahomes set off fireworks that night in Lubbock. Oklahoma won, 66-59, and both offenses combined to set the all-time Division I single-game yardage record with 1,708. Mahomes had some impressive individual game records in this one, too:
- He set an NCAA record for individual offense in a game, with 819 combined passing and rushing yards.
- His 734 passing yards tied Washington State’s Connor Halliday for the most passing yards in a Division I game.
- He set several other Big 12 records, including most completions in a game (52), previously held by Kingsbury.
- He set Tech single-game records for passing yards (734), pass attempts (88), completions (52), most plays (100) and yards of total offense (819)
The two quarterbacks set an FBS record for the combined offense by two players, with 1,383, as well as breaking the combined passing yardage in any NCAA game, with 1,279. The game featured 78 combined first downs, which tied an NCAA record.
Although Mahomes had a sensational season, it was an up-and-down year for the Red Raiders. Texas Tech started off the season 5-2 but lost three straight to Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and West Virginia. The Red Raiders ended up losing four of their last six games, including their 56-27 loss to LSU in the Texas Bowl.
Mahomes declared for the NFL draft after that 2016 season.
Did Patrick Mahomes win the Heisman?
No, Patrick Mahomes never won the Heisman, despite the huge numbers he put up over his last two seasons at Texas Tech. He was never a finalist, either.
One of the biggest reasons behind the snub is Texas Tech being largely out of the national spotlight, finishing a combined 11-14 over his last two seasons. The Heisman consistently goes to players on teams winning at a high level. There has been just one Heisman winner whose team had a losing record — Notre Dame quarterback Paul Hornung, whose Irish team went 2-8 in 1956.
Just two other winners were on teams with four or more losses: 1969’s winner, quarterback Steve Owens, who finished 6-4 at Oklahoma, and 1935’s winner, quarterback Jay Berwanger whose Chicago team went 4-4.

Texas Tech Air Raid offense
Kingsbury learned the Air Raid offense when he was playing at Texas Tech under Mike Leach. Leach, who is largely credited with bringing the Air Raid offense to college football, was mentored by legendary coach Hal Mumme, and the two first ran the offense together at Iowa Wesleyan College, which played in the NAIA.
As the name suggests, the offense is pass-heavy and utilizes multiple receivers to spread the defense out while attacking downfield. It doesn’t feature much of a running game, either. Quarterbacks typically run the offense out of the shotgun, and it’s usually a fast-paced system, most of the time going no-huddle.
In Washington, the Commanders don’t run a pure Air Raid system, even though there are elements to it in the system. Jayden Daniels’ running ability paired with Brian Robinson’s rushing attack makes it a bit more of a hybrid Air Raid.
Unsurprisingly, Mahomes thrived in the offense in Lubbock.
Kliff Kingsbury college record
Kingsbury finished 35-40 over six seasons at Texas Tech. His best finish was the 8-5 year he had in 2013, and he never could top that over his next five seasons.
Why did Kliff Kingsbury leave Texas Tech?
Kingsbury was fired by Texas Tech in November 2018 after the Red Raiders finished 5-7. That marked Tech’s third straight season under .500. While Kingsbury had some talented offenses, his defenses struggled throughout his entire tenure, and Tech never was truly a contender in the Big 12.
Kingsbury was hired by the Arizona Cardinals in January 2019, just a few months after he was fired by Texas Tech. He went 28-37-1 with the Cardinals over four seasons, with just one winning season in 2021.
He spent the 2023 season as a senior offensive analyst with USC before joining Dan Quinn’s Commanders staff before the 2024 season. It’s safe to say he’s found massive success in Washington so far.

Kliff Kingsbury and Patrick Mahomes are two names that are synonymous with the high-flying, high-scoring offense that Texas Tech became known for during their time together in college. Kingsbury, the head coach at the time, and Mahomes, the star quarterback, formed a dynamic duo that captivated fans with their explosive passing attack.The ‘Air Raid’ offense, a system developed by Mike Leach and Hal Mumme, emphasizes spreading the field with multiple receivers and throwing the ball downfield frequently. Kingsbury went on to become the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals in the NFL, while Mahomes was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs and has since become one of the league’s brightest stars, winning a Super Bowl in just his second season as a starter.
As we continue to marvel at the success of Mahomes and the Chiefs in the NFL, it’s worth revisiting their time together at Texas Tech and the foundation that was laid for their future success. The ‘Air Raid’ offense led by Kingsbury and Mahomes was a sight to behold, and it’s no surprise that they have continued to light up the scoreboard at the highest level of football.

Expect more Dioubate on offense for Alabama basketball. Here’s why
About three weeks ago, a new set of plays arrived on Nate Oats’ play sheet — the off-road package.
The plays are specifically designed for one player on offense: Mouhamed Dioubate.
“It’s kind of like smash mouth, not typically the way we play,” Oats said. “But it’s there. We’ve got it in.”
It’s different but effective. Dioubate, a sophomore forward, can do more than play a supporting role on offense for Alabama men’s basketball. He has the potential to be one of the main characters.
He proved that Tuesday against Vanderbilt. He scored 22 points, a career best for him and tied for a game high, as No. 4 Alabama beat the Commodores 103-87 at Coleman Coliseum.
And it might not be an outlier. Don’t expect 22 points every night, but don’t be surprised to see his role on offense continue to grow.
“Coach, he told me to be more aggressive when I get the ball,” Dioubate said. “He’s given me a little more leeway to go score the ball, so you should be seeing that more … hopefully.”
He’s never been known for his scoring or shooting. Dioubate is, after all, ninth in the rotation in points per game with 4.7. Only Aiden Sherrell averages fewer among players seeing regular time in the rotation. Defense and blue-collar points have been Dioubate’s foundation for getting minutes. He’s the posterchild for blue-collar basketball. But now he might have earned the opportunity to see more chances to score.
Oats said Dioubate has always had the leeway to score, but now Dioubate has more experience.
“He just needed to learn how to do it with the correct spacing when the opportunities are there,” Oats said. “You can’t put your head down and drive into crowds and expect anything good to happen.”
Good things happened for Dioubate against the Commodores, though. And that wasn’t the first time — just the easiest to spot. He tallied eight points in 15 minutes against Kentucky this past Saturday. Dioubate also stood out a few weeks back outside of a game setting.
“He was killing everybody in practice one day,” Oats said. “Nobody could guard him.”
That day, Dioubate was too quick for the bigs and too strong for the guards, outside of maybe Chris Youngblood. Even he struggled some to defend Dioubate, Oats said.
The next day, Oats came in with six new plays for Dioubate. That’s what became known as the offroad package.
Alabama (16-3, 5-1 SEC) didn’t call much for Dioubate against Vanderbilt, and yet he scored 22 points in 23 minutes. There was one play in transition, however, where Oats wanted Dioubate to be the guy. Oats saw a mismatch and made clear to Dioubate he wanted him to take advantage.
Just go beast mode. Go score.
So Dioubate did. That time, and many others Tuesday.
Dioubate is going to have opportunities and open looks. Guards such as Mark Sears and Aden Holloway can score at a high clip and draw away the attention of defenses. Labaron Philon has the ability to do that as well.
The attention Alabama’s backcourt requires will almost certainly open things up for Dioubate at times. From there, if the Vanderbilt game is any indication, get ready to see Dioubate do some more off-roading.

Blues insert Bolduc to generate offense, put Binnington back in goal

After his team’s lackluster performance 5-on-5 in a 4-2 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights Thursday, Blues coach Jim Montgomery shuffled his forward lines for the Dallas Stars game Saturday.
Zack Bolduc, who was a healthy scratch in both games against Vegas, will start on a line with the reunited tandem of Robert Thomas and Pavel Buchnevich.
“A little more speed, I want a shooter with those two,” Blues coach Jim Montgomery said. “It’s a great opportunity for him and a great opportunity for that line to create more offense for us.”
Bolduc was eager to take on the challenge of playing with two veterans trying to regain their offensive chemistry.
“A great opportunity for me to play with these guys,” Bolduc said. “Two smart players that can pass you the puck whenever I’m on the ice.

“I’ve got to skate and play fast. Playing with two great playmakers. I’ve got to be ready to shoot every time I’m on the ice.”
That move shuffled other lines and bumped checking forward Nathan Walker out of the lineup.
After backing up Joel Hofer Thursday, Jordan Binnington will be back in goal against the Stars.
The Blues held an optional morning skate Saturday morning. Once again defenseman Nick Leddy participated, but he remained sidelined with his lower-body injury.

The St. Louis Blues are shaking things up in an attempt to spark their offense and get back on track. Ben Johnson vowed, in so many words, not to make the same mistake that cost former Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus his job.
Johnson joined FS1’s “Breakfast Ball” and “The Herd” on Thursday and was asked what he’d do if his quarterback took a sack in the final seconds of their Thanksgiving Day game against the Detroit Lions with a timeout in his pocket.
“We’re not going there today,” Johnson said with a laugh, though he motioned as if he would’ve called a timeout in that scenario.
Of course, this actually happened in the Bears’ November loss to the Lions. Instead of calling a timeout after Caleb Williams took a sack with just over 30 seconds left, Eberflus let the clock run down before the Bears ran a half-hearted Hail Mary attempt on the final play of their eventual 23-20 loss.
Eberflus was promptly fired the next day, opening up one of the more intriguing head coaching jobs in the NFL.
Johnson, who was formerly the Lions’ offensive coordinator and arguably the most sought-after head coach candidate this offseason, has cited Williams as one of the main reasons he took the job. But after Williams’ relatively underwhelming rookie season — 3,541 passing yards, 20 passing touchdowns, six interceptions, 489 rushing yards and a 5-12 record as a starter — Johnson knows that he still has a bit of a way to go, and he has a development plan in place for the top pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

“You bring up accountability, and that’s going to be at the cornerstone of what we do here,” Johnson said. “It’s going to be integrity. It’s going to be accountability — be who we say we’re going to be and be what we say we’re going to do. So, we’ll come to an agreement. We’ll have a plan. We’re going to end up executing that agreement. If anything falls short, we’ll call each other out.
“It’s going to be coaches and players, we’re going to have great dialogue between each other. That goes to the quarterback as well.”
What made Johnson one of the top coaching commodities was how quickly he turned around the Lions offense, taking it from the bottom of the league when he was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2022 to the highest-scoring offense in the league this past season. His creative playcalling and work with veteran Jared Goff to revive the quarterback’s career were two big reasons for Detroit’s offensive success, making it easy to envision what he could do with a dual-threat quarterback like Williams.
Johnson said it “remains to be seen” how his offense in Chicago will resemble his offense in Detroit, adding that he doesn’t know Williams well enough yet to establish that. He did recognize that Williams and Goff are two different players, saying he was “encouraged” by what he saw from the rookie signal-caller in 2024.
“Obviously, he’s a different player and has a different skill set than Jared did, and I’ll be excited to see what direction we go,” Johnson said. “It’s going to morph. It’s not going to look the same as it did in Detroit. There are elements that I do believe in. We want the same things to look different, different things to look the same, multiplicity, the defense on their heels and guessing at all times.
“At the end of the day, Caleb is going to really dictate the direction of where this offense goes and what we end up looking like.”
One of those elements is committing to the run game. In Detroit, Johnson had one of the best running back duos in the league in Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery. They certainly helped Goff, and Johnson is hoping to duplicate that success in Chicago.
“The number one deciding factor in winning and losing games right now is quarterback success and efficiency,” Johnson said. “But the best way you can help that, for a young player especially, is to have a great running game. That’s something we’re going to hang our hat on. We’ll see how well we improve upfront. I like the backs we already have on the roster, and we could certainly look to augment that position. But it’s going to start there.”

Johnson’s ability to elevate the Lions offense, in turn, made Detroit one of the best teams in football over the last two seasons. The Lions have won back-to-back NFC North titles, going 15-2 this past season before their surprising divisional-round exit at the hands of the Washington Commanders.
As Johnson admitted that the Bears offense will look different from his Lions offenses in the past, there are some things he wants to take from his old boss, Dan Campbell, to the Windy City.
“Ultimately, it came down to the identity they established in Detroit was all about grit, being able to handle adversity and fighting through the tough times,” Johnson shared. “That’s what that started with in Year 1, and you saw it come to fruition again this year with all of the injuries that team faced to still fight through it and come away with 15 wins, a division title and the No. 1 seed.
“This league is going to knock you down, and you’ve gotta get back up. That mindset and mentality are going to be carried over here to Chicago. It’s not going to be said exactly the same way. I’m not Dan Campbell, and it’s going to be my own spin on it, but identity and those terms will still apply here.”

That culture helped the Lions reach heights they’ve never seen in franchise history as the 2024 season was the first time they ever earned the No. 1 seed in the NFC. The Bears have a little bit more success than the Lions, but their lone Super Bowl win came in 1985, and they’ve only played in one Super Bowl since then.
Just like Campbell did in Detroit, Johnson is hoping to revitalize a football town.
“I know what a great sports town this is,” Johnson said. “I want, desperately, to be successful here in football.”
