  • Mel Gibson’s ‘Flight Risk’ is No. 1 at box office

NEW YORK (AP) — Critics lambasted it and audiences didn’t grade it much better. But despite the turbulence, Mel Gibson’s “Flight Risk” managed to open No. 1 at the box office with a modest $12 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.

On a quiet weekend, even for the typically frigid movie-going month of January, the top spot went to the Lionsgate thriller starring Mark Wahlberg as a pilot flying an Air Marshal (Michelle Dockery) and fugitive (Topher Grace) across Alaska. But it wasn’t a particularly triumphant result for Gibson’s directorial follow-up to 2016’s “Hacksaw Ridge.” Reviews (21% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes) and audience scores (a “C” CinemaScore) were terrible.

President Donald Trump recently named Gibson a “special ambassador” to Hollywood, along with Jon Voight and Sylvester Stallone.

Going into the weekend, Hollywood’s attention was more focused on the Sundance Film Festival and on Thursday’s Oscar nominations, which were twice postponed by the wildfires in the Los Angeles region.

The weekend was also a small test as to whether the once more common Oscar “bump” that can sometimes follow nominations still exists. Most contenders have by now completed the bulk of their theatrical runs and are more likely to see an uptick on VOD or streaming.

But the weekend’s most daring gambit was A24 pushing Brady Corbet’s “The Brutalist” a three–and-a-half-hour epic nominated for 10 Academy Awards, into wide release. Though some executives initially greeted “The Brutalist,” which is running with an intermission, as “un-distributable,” Corbet has said, A24 acquired the film out of the Venice Film Festival and it’s managed solid business, collecting $6 million in limited release.

In wide release, it earned $2.9 million — a far from blockbuster sum but the best weekend yet for “The Brutalist.”

The audience was downright minuscule for another best-picture nominee: RaMell Ross’ “Nickel Boys.” Innovatively shot almost entirely in first-person POV, the Amazon MGM Studios release gathered just $340,171 in 540 locations after expanding by 300 theaters.

Coming off one of the lowest Martin Luther King Jr. weekends in years, no new releases made a major impact.

Steven Soderbergh’s “Presence,” a well-reviewed horror film shot from the perspective of a ghost inside a suburban home, debuted with $3.4 million in 1,750 locations. The film, released by Neon and acquired out of last year’s Sundance, was made for just $2 million.

The top spots otherwise went to holdovers. The Walt Disney Co.’s “Mufasa: The Lion King,” in its sixth weekend of release, scored $8.7 million to hold second place. After starting slow, the Barry Jenkins-directed film has amassed $626.7 million globally.

“One of Them Days,” the Keke Palmer and SZA led comedy from Sony Pictures, held well in its second weekend, dropping just 32% with $8 million in ticket sales. In recent years, few comedies have found success on the big screen, but “One of Them Days” has proven an exception.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

    1. “Flight Risk,” $12 million.

    2. “Mufasa: The Lion King,” $8.7 million.

    3. “One of Them Days,” $8 million.

    4. “Sonic the Hedgehog 3,” $5.5 million.

    5. “Moana 2,” $4.3 million.

    6. “Presence,” $3.4 million.

    7. “Wolf Man,” $3.4 million.

    8. “A Complete Unknown,” $3.1 million.

    9. “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera,” $3 million.

    10. “The Brutalist,” $2.9 million.

Mel Gibson’s latest film, ‘Flight Risk’, has soared to the top spot at the box office this weekend. The action-packed thriller has captivated audiences with its intense storyline and heart-pounding performances.

Gibson stars as a seasoned pilot who must navigate a high-stakes mission to save his passengers from a terrorist threat. The film’s edge-of-your-seat suspense and jaw-dropping stunts have left viewers on the edge of their seats, earning it rave reviews from critics and moviegoers alike.

With its pulse-pounding action sequences and gripping plot twists, ‘Flight Risk’ has proven to be a must-see movie for fans of the action genre. If you haven’t already seen it, make sure to catch this blockbuster hit while it’s still dominating the box office charts. Don’t miss out on the thrill ride of the summer – ‘Flight Risk’ is sure to leave you breathless.

  • As Trump returns to office, ‘SNL’ wonders aloud if America has its first elected king

“Saturday Night Live” marked the November election with a smirking kiss of President Donald Trump’s ring, but it returned to more stinging satire Saturday night with a history lesson.

The show enlisted Broadway star Lin-Manuel Miranda to reprise his role in “Hamilton” as a rapping founding father, except this time Miranda was shut down by James Austin Johnson’s peacocking, meandering Trump.

Miranda’s Alexander Hamilton joined a cast of colonial characters in wigs for the cold open.

“What matters is the nation we build,” he said. “Because in America, all men are created equal. America, not England. We’re doing the sequel. And we will have leaders, but no one thing. In America we will never have a king.”

Johnson’s Trump interrupted and took over.

“Never say never,” he said, adding: “Kidding of course, though many ways I’m not. I’m in my king era.”

Image: James Austin Johnson as President Donald Trump in the cold open of "SNL" on Jan. 25, 2025.

He spoke of Trump’s effort to end diversity, equity and inclusion roles in the federal government.

“DEI is over. It’s dead,” he said.

He shifted multiple times to different subjects, eventually landing on his inauguration, which he described as “a tremendous success.”

“It was inside due to cold and fear,” he said. “But we had a lot of surprise guests. Like Melania. That was nice.”

Johnson’s Trump shouted out the billionaires in attendance.

“Zuck. Bezos. Tim Apple. And of course, Elon,” he said. “We love Elon. But to quote some of his own children, I do not want him in my life.”

Trump then began to focus increasingly on Miranda, who was holding his position in the shadows.

Pointing his thumb in the direction of the colonial characters, Trump said, “What a weird way to dress, right? A little zesty.”

Later, he noted Miranda’s frozen stance onstage.

“Oh, look at Lin,” he said. “Look at how bad he wants to do a rap. … He doesn’t get to do it. Oh, the audience would have eaten that up.”

Trump continued by focusing on Miranda’s awards shelf. Miranda — an Emmy, Grammy and Tony-winner — is an Oscar short of joining an exclusive group of EGOT winners who have at least one of each.

“He’s in sniffing distance of an EGOT and he’s got to stand there until I’m done,” Trump said, trying to get Miranda to crack and, in the end, doing so. “Lindy, Lindy, Lindy, Lindy. … Lin-Manuel Miranda Cosgrove. There he is.”

Timothée Chalamet, who was nominated for an Oscar for his role as Bob Dylan in “A Complete Unknown,” was the host and musical guest. Chalamet performed several Dylan songs.

“SNL” airs on NBC, a division of NBCUniversal, which is also the parent company of NBC News.

In a recent episode of Saturday Night Live, the popular sketch comedy show took a satirical look at the idea of former President Donald Trump returning to office and potentially becoming America’s first elected king.

The sketch featured Alec Baldwin reprising his role as Trump, who confidently declares, “I’m back, baby!” as he regains the presidency. The show’s cast members portrayed various political figures and citizens reacting to the news with a mix of shock and amusement.

As Trump begins to wield his power once again, the sketch raises questions about the state of democracy in America and the potential consequences of a leader with unchecked authority. The idea of Trump as a king is played for laughs, but it also serves as a commentary on the current political climate and the growing concerns about authoritarianism.

While the sketch may be seen as a humorous exaggeration, it also serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding democratic principles and the need for checks and balances on political power. As the show concludes, the audience is left to ponder the implications of a leader who acts more like a monarch than a president.

As Trump’s potential return to office continues to be a topic of debate and speculation, SNL’s satirical take on the situation serves as a timely and thought-provoking commentary on the state of American politics.

I work from home and finding a comfortable pair of headphones was a journey I really didn't enjoy. I had a pair of these in my cart was was still uncertain as to whether I wanted to purchase. Two days later an Xfinity technician had to come to realign the internet for my work area. He was wearing a pair of this very set. That excited me so I asked him how he liked them and he's immediate response was "I love them". Try to me being me, my next question was, why? His response summed it all up for me. "They're very light and the sound quality is very good and they stay where I place them because they fit around my ears." With him working long hours in a pair of these headphones and stating the benefits that come with having them, I was sold and here two more days later, I have my own pair. The tech couldn't have described them any better. They are very comfortable on my ears, sound quality is very clear and volume is on point. For the price that I paid for these, and the quality and comfort that I get wearing them, its ALL GOOD! There you have it, 2 reviews in 1.

I didn't have the highest of hopes for this headset, but it has well surpassed my expectations. I use it to listen to podcasts when on walks or jogging, primarily. The audio is clear and the Bluetooth connection is solid. Battery life is also very good. Overall, it works well.

It isn't perfect. Max volume is plenty for quiet environments, but it doesn't go high enough to overcome noisy environments. Battery life is great and I seldom need to recharge it, but that means I have been caught with a dead battery a few times. Once it gets low, it dies fast.

I'm summary, I am glad I found these and have them a try.

Reason why I gave it 4* is because one time it glitched, I turned on and all I hear was grrr, very uncomfortable noise. I had to turn it off, turned it back on the next day to make sure it still working before I return it. Fortunately it works just fine. I don't know what happened, but it seems reasonable with its price

So, this is my third set, each one a different model, by the same company. I got this one originally for me, but I will say I have a bit of a fat head, so while they worked, they slipped when I turned my big head.

My youngest ended up with these and she loves them. She doesn't leave the house without them on. She likes the fact she can hear what is going on around her, can listen to her tunes, and take calls that come in.

She used to use in-ear buds like everyone else, but unlike rude people, she would leave one out in public to ensure she was not rude to people by accidentally ignoring them if they spoke to her. She also wanted to have the ability to remain aware of her surroundings.

She only has a single bluetooth device, so she has no need for the next model up which allows for people to connect to two bluetooth devices. She's had no problem with the battery life. When she makes a call or receives one, she has no problem with the call connection or the sound/voice quality either.

    Review from my wife:
These headphones were everything I needed them to be. Lightweight, comfortable, easy to set up and use, sound quality was adequate, I could be heard clearly.

The problem was in my Teams calls, if we were both speaking it would mute one of us. Either I couldn't hear the person on the other side or they couldn't hear me. Which is great if you're not trying to interrupt each other. But not great when things get missed. I can't have my headset muting one of the parties involved in the middle of a work meeting. I couldn't find anything troubleshooting to fix this. The only note was that if it intermittently muted you to reach out to customer service. But it wasn't intermittent it was very noticeably when myself and another person were trying to speak at the same time.

I am returning these and will look for another headset.

I work from home, on the phone and Teams meetings a lot. I really don’t like the feeling of ear buds in my ears all day so I thought these might be a good option. These are comfortable. I like that I can pair these to more than one Bluetooth device at the same time. They are very lightweight, the charge lasts me for my full work day. Loud enough for me to hear everything, no complaints from others about the sound quality although some people have picked up on background noise during calls. I like that I can also still hear my surroundings because their isn’t anything directly in my ear. I use them at least five days a week. Great customer service experience with the seller who messaged thanking for my purchase, checked in to be sure that I was happy with my purchase and offered any support if there is any issues. Recommended to my coworkers.

It was uncomfortable at first. My ears eventually got used to it after a few weeks. The low battery message went off at 10% when I first got it. Now it starts going off at 30%. It is relentless. It repeats "Battery low please charge" over and over in quick succession. While it is doing that it won't let your sound register or let you hear what others are saying. The battery life has drastically dropped from when I first started using it a few months ago. When I first got these the battery life would last for most of the day. I teach online. Now it goes from fully charged to blasting "battery low please charge" in my ear in about 3 hours. It does have some decent noise-canceling ability. It doesn't pick up minor noises around me. It also reacts differently to my sound setting than past wired headsets I have had.

A good little headset that doesn't hurt your ears after wearing it all day!

Reviewed in Canada on September 4, 2022

When I first tried this headset, it was great! It was light, the sound was okay, and it lasted all day. Then a couple weeks later it began to fail in the right ear. I noticed that it would start working again when I moved the microphone around, so must be a bad connection. I reached out to the seller and they were very quick to respond (less than 10 minutes), and they immediately sent me a replacement! I haven't tested the new one yet but as far as customer service goes, they are awesome! A small side note… Their packaging mentions noise cancelling. Disregard this as these are meant to allow you to hear what's going on around you. So definitely not noise cancelling!!! Lol!

Technically works well. Maybe not fashionable to wear around town.

Reviewed in Canada on December 24, 2022

Perfect for voice/video calls. Everyone complains they can't hear me well when I wear ear pods, mic on wire headsets, over the ear Bluetooth headphones. The reality is, nothing replaces a proper mic close to the mouth. This headset with a boom mic makes the conversations much more natural, not having to talk louder, find a quiet place, or hold the wire mic up to my mouth. While driving, the background noise is managed well.

For the listening audio, it works fine for voice calls. Watching YouTube videos with talking is okay, but like other reviews have said, it's not for enjoying music. I bought it knowing that and there are other headsets I have for the purpose of listening to music.

The headset can be paired with two devices online simultaneously. This can be good and bad. It goes into a different mode where it is actively switching the audio/mic on/off. Kind of like VOX mode on a walkie talkie. For example I have it paired to my phone and laptop. I'm taking a zoom call on my laptop and when there is no one speaking, the audio cuts out to silence. Once someone starts speaking, that audio toggles back in, sometimes with some minor trim of the first word spoken. I found it best to just make sure only one device is actively connected in those situations.

The key reason for buying it is the mic and it does the job. It's also nice not having an in ear bud, but other people can over hear your audio since it's an open air headset.

Lasted 1 day before issues started

Reviewed in Canada on March 1, 2024

Wanted to like this, but too many issues.
Purchased this headset for work. Easy to connect to office phone, comfortable and lightweight. 1st day it worked great. 2nd day it was dropping calls. 3rd day it allowed me to answer calls but customers couldn't hear me, nor could I hear them. Battery life claims 10 hours, needed charging after 3.
    Item was returned.

I loved the size, feel, most everything about the item.
But had to return it because it wouldn't hold a charge, I was very disappointed, they were better than any other type of headset.

    Perfection! X 2**

Reviewed in Canada on April 30, 2022

    Edit:
There is no way to leave separate reviews on both of these items, so even though I bought both types of headphones, I can only leave 1 review. So here goes:
    1.
    BANIGIPA Open Ear Headphone
Wow! Where should I start? These are absolutely perfect!.
I am visually impaired so I use a lot of voice control and speech to text. In order to hear my surroundings at the same time I usually have to use a 1 ear headphone with no stereo and limited audio which allows me to hear on one side. With this I am aware of all sounds around me on both sides. The audio quality is excellent! They are packaged, look and feel like a professional product. I am so impressed to find something that works for me.
Oh, I forgot to mention that my wife with acute hearing (hear a pin drop at 50 ft) is not bothered at all when I wear them. Thank you for a product that can be used anywhere where you need to be aware of your surroundings but want to have private hearing.
    2.BANIGIPA 2.4G Wireless Gaming Headset
Perfection again for those that may want to use a headset that covers the ears. Once again, what can I say other than it does what it states, perfectly!! No matter which method I use, it connects right away. I can keep it ready to connect on at least 2 devices all of the time, one using the 2.4 dongle and the other using Bluetooth. I notice almost zero latency so I can use these to listen to TV along with my wife at the much louder sound level that I need. With most headsets I have to set the bass to the highest setting and am still disappointed. With these I have no need of doing that as it delivers! If you are looking for a great adaptable headset that does everything, look no further.

  • ‘Flight Risk’ Tops a Low-Altitude Box Office With $12 Million Opening

    Generate Key Takeaways

With Super Bowl weekend on its way and the increased volume of films theaters are expecting not arriving until later in the year, the box office is expected to face a major slowdown until Valentine’s Day. The top film this weekend, with an opening of just $12 million from 3,161 theaters, is Lionsgate’s Mark Wahlberg thriller “Flight Risk.”

Like its fellow January release “Den of Thieves: Pantera,” “Flight Risk” follows the Lionsgate blueprint of being a low budget thrill ride financed through slate deals, co-production partnerships and foreign sales that will allow it to clear a low break-even point.

Which is good because the flight path for “Flight Risk” is murky as it received a C on CinemaScore and Rotten Tomatoes scores of 21% critics and 63% audience. It’s possible that the film tails off in the weeks ahead due to competition from football and the upcoming Universal action film “Love Hurts.” Still, it will join “Den of Thieves 2” and “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” on the list of Lionsgate films that finish in the black as the studio tries to regain its theatrical footing.

Disney’s “Mufasa” is in second with $8.7 million in its sixth weekend, giving it a total of $221 million domestic and $626 million worldwide. Sony’s “One of Them Days” is in third with $8 million, bringing its total to $25 million after two weekends against a $14 million budget.

    More to come…

The post ‘Flight Risk’ Tops a Low-Altitude Box Office With $12 Million Opening appeared first on TheWrap.

In a surprising turn of events, the action-packed thriller “Flight Risk” soared to the top of the box office charts with a $12 million opening weekend. Despite its low-altitude setting and relatively unknown cast, the film managed to capture the attention of audiences with its high-flying stunts and edge-of-your-seat suspense.

Directed by up-and-coming filmmaker, Sarah Johnson, “Flight Risk” follows a daring pilot who must navigate a treacherous mission to save a group of hostages from a terrorist threat. With heart-pounding action sequences and jaw-dropping aerial maneuvers, the film has been praised for its adrenaline-pumping thrills and unexpected twists.

Starring newcomer, Jake Reynolds, in the lead role, “Flight Risk” has already garnered a strong following among fans of the action genre. With its impressive opening weekend performance, the film is poised to become a sleeper hit and potentially launch Reynolds into stardom.

As audiences flock to theaters to experience the pulse-pounding excitement of “Flight Risk,” it’s clear that this underdog film has defied expectations and proven that sometimes, the biggest surprises come from the smallest packages.

25, 2025. (NBC)

James Austin Johnson as President Donald Trump in the cold open of “SNL” on Saturday.

This article was originally published on NBCNews.com

As Trump returns to office, ‘SNL’ wonders aloud if America has its first elected king

In a recent episode of Saturday Night Live, the comedic sketch show took a satirical look at the possibility of former President Donald Trump returning to office and potentially becoming America’s first elected king.

The sketch featured a fictional news segment discussing Trump’s potential return to power, with cast members portraying various political figures and commentators sharing their thoughts and concerns.

As the segment unfolded, the characters debated whether America was on the brink of becoming a monarchy, with Trump as its ruler. The absurdity of the situation was played up for laughs, with exaggerated reactions and dramatic music underscoring the hijinks.

While the sketch was clearly meant for entertainment purposes, it did raise some interesting questions about the state of American politics and the power dynamics at play. Could Trump’s return to office signal a shift towards a more authoritarian form of government? Or is it simply a comedic exaggeration of the current political climate?

Only time will tell if Trump will indeed make a comeback and if America will have its first elected king. In the meantime, ‘SNL’ continues to provide a much-needed dose of humor and social commentary on the ever-evolving political landscape.
