  • DNC Members Elect New Slate of DNC Officers

On Saturday, February 1, DNC members voted to elect a new slate of DNC Officers including positions for Chair, Vice Chair of Civic Engagement and Voter Participation, three Vice Chairs, Secretary, Treasurer, and National Finance Chair.

The new elected DNC Officers include:

    • Chair: Ken Martin
    • Vice Chair for Civic Engagement and Voter Participation (CEVP): Reyna Walters-Morgan
    • Vice Chair (three positions): Artie Blanco, Malcolm Kenyatta, and David Hogg
    • Secretary: Jason Rae
    • Treasurer: Virginia McGregor
    • National Finance Chair: Chris Korge

Read more about the DNC Officers:

Ken Martin will serve as Chair.

Ken Martin has served as the Chairman of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor (DFL) Party since 2011 — making him the longest serving Chair in the 75-year history of the DFL.

Ken made the DFL what it is today — an all-day, year-round party dedicated to organizing communities, empowering the grassroots, electing progressive candidates, and improving the lives of Minnesotans.

Given his success as the DFL Party Chairman, Ken was elected by his peers across the country to serve as the President of the Association of State Democratic Chairs in 2017, where he works with state and local party committees to build permanent, long-lasting political infrastructure so they can elect candidates from the school board to the Oval Office.

Before his election as Chairman, Ken spent two decades working for progressive candidates and causes. He played key leadership roles on various campaigns, including Dayton for Governor in 2010, Hatch for Governor in 2006, Kerry for President in 2004, Humphrey for Secretary of State in 2002, and Gore for President in 2000. Ken led the Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment campaign in 2008, which dedicated funding to the arts, environment, conservation, and parks and trails in Minnesota. It is the largest conservation finance measure in the nation to ever become law.

Ken and his wife, Jennifer O’Rourke, live in Eagan, Minnesota with their two sons.

Reyna Walters-Morgan will serve as Vice Chair for Civic Engagement and Voter Participation.

Reyna Walters-Morgan is an organizer, attorney and voting rights advocate. After law school, she spent time in private practice and as a Senior Attorney at the Social Security Administration. Later, she worked as a Regional Voter Protection Director in Ohio and managed NC’s nonprofit voter protection efforts.

For almost five years, she was the Voter Protection Director at the DNC, where she built an award-wining program and modernized resources. She most recently served as an appointee to the U.S. Department of Justice in the Biden-Harris Administration.

She is a proud UNC Tar Heel, Howard Bison, and member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

Artie Blanco, Malcolm Kenyatta, and David Hogg will serve as DNC Vice Chairs.

    Artie Blanco

Artie is a longtime union member who currently represents Nevada as a DNC member serving on the Rules and Bylaws Committee and the Executive Committee. Artie began her political career as a college student working for Congressman Gene Green in Houston. She joined the DNC family in 2005 as the Southwest Political Director after working for NALEO, the Texas Legislature, and the DCCC. In 2009, in response to Senator Reid’s call to action to expand the Latino electorate, Artie moved to Nevada to lead a non-profit civic engagement organization to register, persuade, and increase Latino voters, resulting in record Latino turnout in 2010. In 2012, the National AFL-CIO hired Artie as Nevada State Director, then Regional Campaigns Coordinator and appointed her in 2023 as the National Campaign Director for the AFL-CIO.

    Malcolm Kenyatta

Representative Malcolm Kenyatta is a legislator currently serving in the Pennsylvania General Assembly. In 2023, he was appointed by President Joe Biden to chair the Presidential Advisory Commission on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity for Black Americans.

Representative Kenyatta is a barrier-breaking public figure, becoming the first openly LGBTQ+ person of color and one of the youngest people elected to the Pennsylvania General Assembly in 2018. In 2022, he became the first openly LGBTQ+ person of color to seek a U.S. Senate seat in American history. In April 2024, he made history again as the first openly LGBTQ+ person ever nominated for statewide office by a major political party in Pennsylvania when he became the Democratic nominee for Auditor General. In the general election, he earned nearly 3.1 million votes, the second-highest vote total for any Democrat on the ticket that year.

Throughout his career, Representative Kenyatta has been a vocal proponent of protecting workers’ rights and rooting out government corruption and waste. He holds multiple legislative leadership roles, including as a member of the powerful State Government Committee with oversight of state agencies and elections, where he chairs the Subcommittee on Government Operations; Chair of the Financial Services and Banking Subcommittee in the Commerce Committee; and as a member of the Finance and Judiciary Committees.

Representative Kenyatta lives in North Philadelphia with his husband, Dr. Matthew Kenyatta, and their dog, Cleo.

    David Hogg

David Hogg was thrust into the world of activism by the largest school shooting in American history, Parkland survivor David Hogg has become one of the most compelling voices of his generation. Alongside his classmates and fellow survivors, David co-founded March For Our Lives, one of the world’s preeminent youth-led movements. In 2023, David Hogg and Kevin Lata, co-founded Leaders We Deserve. LWD is dedicated to recruiting, training, and funding young progressives running for Congress and State Legislatures across the country. David travels across the United States to support Gen Z and younger Millennial candidates working to transform the future of the Democratic Party.

Jason Rae will continue to serve as Secretary.

A lifelong Democrat, Jason Rae will be continuing as secretary — a role he assumed in 2017.  As secretary, he also serves as the DNC Executive and Rules & Bylaws Committee. Before he could even drive, Jason would ride his bike to county party meetings in rural Barron County, Wisconsin. He was first elected to the DNC in 2004 when he was just 17 years old, the youngest person ever elected, and was re-elected three times. Secretary Rae served as Chair of the DNC Youth Council from 2007 to 2017. He also founded and currently serves as President & CEO for the Wisconsin LGBT Chamber of Commerce, an award-winning organization with more than 600 business members. He is a partner at the Milwaukee-based public affairs firm Nation Consulting. Rae lives in Glendale, Wisconsin, a suburb of Milwaukee, with his husband, Phillip.

Virginia McGregor will continue to serve as Treasurer.

Virginia McGregor currently serves on the Board of McGregor Industries, a union steel manufacturer in Northeast Pennsylvania that has been in the McGregor family for 106 years. They service the national commercial construction industry, specializing in stairs and railings for high-rise buildings. She also serves as Chair of the Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine, and is a Board Member of the nationally-recognized Geisinger Health System.

Virginia has spent her entire adult life active in Democratic politics — local, state and federal. Her entry into presidential politics was in 2016 with the Hillary Clinton race, when Virginia was part of her National Finance Committee. During Tom Perez’s tenure, Virginia became a Deputy National Finance Director at the Democratic National Committee.

She was appointed in 2021 by President Joseph Biden to serve as Treasurer of the Democratic National Committee, a position she is very proud to currently hold. She served as National Co-Chair for Women for Biden and Women for Harris, and is a longtime National Co-Chair of the DNC’s Women’s Leadership Forum.

Virginia and her husband Bob reside in Scranton, Pennsylvania. They are parents to six children and grandparents to four.

Chris Korge will continue to serve as National Finance Chair

Christopher G. Korge is an attorney, retailer and real estate developer. He has served as the elected National Finance Chairman since 2019. Previously, he was National Finance Chairman for Hillary Clinton for President, National Finance Vice-Chairman for the DNC, and Chairman of the Democratic Business Council for the DNC. He has served in the past as a Trustee for the Democratic Senate Campaign Committee and Trustee of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. He has had a national reputation for over twenty six years as one of the most prolific national Democratic fundraisers in America for each and every Democratic nominee since President Clinton was elected in 1992.

Chris has been extremely involved in charitable activities in the community, including serving on the Florida International University Foundation Board, Vice Chairman of the Urban League of Greater Miami, and is involved with numerous other organizations.

  • Canadian Black Hawk helicopters patrolling Minnesota border along with conservation officers

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police have launched new Black Hawk helicopters, along with Manitoba Conservation Officers are now patrolling the border with the United States, including with northern Minnesota.

“Everybody in Manitoba right now is paying attention to building up the relationship with the United States of America,” said Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew. “Having a strong and secure border is important to us.”

Manitoba officials announced on Monday that conservation officers will now be used to look for drug and human trafficking.

A little more than a week ago, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police launched Black Hawk helicopters to work the border — including the Minnesota border with Manitoba. “I’m sure you’ll probably hear it, might see it — it will be flying on the Canadian side,” said RCMP Assistant Commissioner Lisa Moreland. The new helicopters allow the RCMP to deploy teams of officers quickly if they detect people crossing the border in regions where conditions and the elements can be harsh.

“If you’re not prepared, that area is unforgiving,” Moreland said. “Having the Black Hawk to be able to respond quickly I can tell you it will help tremendously,” Moreland said. Last week, President Donald Trump mentioned possibly imposing 25% tariffs soon on Mexico and Canada — as the United States tries to stop illegal immigration and the flow of fentanyl.

U.S. Customs agents seized 43 pounds of fentanyl at the Canadian border last fiscal year, compared with more than 21,000 pounds (21,100) at the Mexico border.

U.S. Border Patrol FY2024 data shows more than 1.5 million people encountered or apprehended on the southern border with Mexico, compared to more than 23,000 people apprehended on the Canadian border.

“I think it’s unfortunate that the President of the United States has to tell us that we need to secure our border better,” said Dave Carlson, a top government official in the municipality of Emerson-Franklin in Manitoba. “I think a lot of people have felt that it’s not secure enough.”

“The additional eyes and ears on the border is really a good thing because we have seen those tragedies when people cross in inclement weather and get themselves into a bad situation,” Carlson said.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

In a recent development, Canadian Black Hawk helicopters have been spotted patrolling the Minnesota border alongside conservation officers. This increased presence is aimed at curbing illegal activities such as poaching and unauthorized border crossings.

The collaboration between Canadian military helicopters and conservation officers signals a united effort to protect the natural resources and wildlife in the region. This joint operation is crucial in safeguarding the delicate ecosystem and maintaining the integrity of the border.

Residents and visitors in the area are urged to cooperate with authorities and report any suspicious activities to ensure the safety and preservation of the environment. The heightened surveillance is a proactive measure to deter illegal activities and uphold the laws and regulations in place.

As we continue to see the importance of conservation efforts and border security, it is reassuring to witness the cooperation between different agencies working together towards a common goal. Let’s all do our part in protecting our natural resources and promoting sustainable practices for future generations to enjoy.

  • Dulles CBP officers seize nearly 70,000 Ambien pills hidden in yarn shipment

A routine Customs and Border Protection (CBP) inspection of a shipment from India led to the discovery of nearly 70,000 Zolpidem Tartrate pills, commonly known as Ambien, concealed in spools of yarn at Washington Dulles International Airport, authorities said,

The seizure happened on Jan. 16, following an initial examination in mid-December, officials said.

  • Trump pardons DC officers convicted in death and cover up

    CNN
     —

President Donald Trump has issued a “full and unconditional pardon” to Washington, DC, police lieutenant Andrew Zabavsky and officer Terence Sutton for their roles in the death of 20-year-old Karon Hylton-Brown, a case that drew protests on the heels of the murder of George Floyd.

Prosecutors argued that in October 2020, Sutton and Zabavsky of the Metropolitan Police Department spotted Hylton-Brown driving a moped helmetless and pursued him at “unreasonable speeds” until he was eventually struck and killed by an uninvolved motorist.

As Hylton-Brown lay dying in the street, the officers covered up the incident, according to investigators, turning off their body cameras, tampering with the scene and misleading their commanding officers about the nature of the incident.

Defense lawyers have disputed details about the encounter and argued that the court threw out key evidence that gave the officers reasonable suspicion that Hylton-Brown was going to commit a crime. Kellen Dwyer, an attorney for Sutton, told CNN they expected to overturn the conviction on appeal.

Sutton was found guilty of second-degree murder, conspiracy to obstruct, and obstruction of justice and sentenced to 66 months in prison. The same jury found Zabavsky guilty of conspiracy to obstruct and obstruction of justice and he faced 48 months behind bars.

The DC Police Union had sought a pardon from the Trump White House for the two officers, who had been out on bail pending appeal of their case, and lawyers for the officers had been actively pursuing clemency from the administration, as well.

Zabavsky’s attorney, Christopher Zampogna, thanked Trump following the pardon, saying, “We’re very grateful to [President Trump] for doing it.” Zampogna said he and his client are working out the final details with the Department of Justice.

Sutton, for his part, told CNN that he was “just overwhelmed” and expressed his thanks to the president. “I want to go back to the police department and finish my career,” he added, admitting that he “has no clue” if it will be possible.

Dwyer added in a statement, “We are thrilled that President Trump ended this prosecution once and for all.”

Trump had referenced the potential pardons several times in recent days, including Tuesday at an unrelated press event at the White House when he was asked whether his decision to pardon the January 6, 2021, US Capitol rioters sent the message that it’s OK to assault police.

“No, the opposite. In fact, I’m going to be letting two officers from Washington police DC, I believe they’re from DC, but I just approved it,” Trump said. “They were arrested, put in jail for five years, because they went after an illegal, and I guess something happened where something went wrong and they arrested the two officers and put them in jail for going after a criminal. A rough criminal, by the way. And I’m actually releasing… no I’m the friend, I am the friend of police more than any president who’s ever been in this office.”

While he didn’t specifically reference Sutton or Zabavsky – and Hylton-Brown is a US citizen, police say, and not in the country illegally as the president claims – the comments mirrored prior remarks from Trump about the case. Trump had also posted a link on his Truth Social platform to an op-ed calling for the officers to be pardoned.

In this October 28, 2020, file photo, Washington Metropolitan Police Department police officers push back demonstrators outside of the fourth district police station in Washington after an officer was indicted on a murder charge for his role in a fatal vehicle accident during a police chase that has sparked two days of protests and clashes.

Hylton-Brown’s death and the subsequent coverup by the officers, which came just months after Floyd’s murder, sparked days of unrest and violent protest in the nation’s capital in October 2020.

Hylton-Brown’s mother, Karen Hylton, who was outspoken after her son’s death, told CNN before the pardon announcement that she was shocked and started crying when she learned of the potential pardons.

“Do not pardon these murderers,” Hylton had said, adding that she sent a letter to Trump on Tuesday. “I’m asking him, do not pardon them.”

Police officials and rank-and-file members of the department have argued that the officers faced excessive charges – noting especially the murder charge against Sutton – in a case where no contact was made between the officers’ vehicle and Hylton-Brown.

“It is my opinion that had this case not occurred on the heels of the George Floyd murder, these officers would not be facing decades of jail time,” former DC Police Chief Peter Newsham said at the time, according to CNN affiliate WUSA9 News.

But prosecutors on the case have stood by the charges and convictions.

“Public safety requires public trust,” US Attorney Matthew Graves said in a statement after the officers were sentenced in September. “Crimes like this erode that trust and are a disservice to the community and the thousands of officers who work incredibly hard, within the bounds of the Constitution, to keep us safe.”

“The community and fellow law enforcement officers deserve trusted officers that do not abuse their positions of trust and power or put the public at risk,” FBI Acting Special Agent in Charge David Geist added, saying the sentences “show the weight of the crimes and the significance of the criminal justice system and processes at work.”

In a shocking move, President Trump has pardoned the DC police officers who were convicted in the death and subsequent cover-up of a civilian. This decision has sparked outrage and disbelief among many, with critics calling it a blatant abuse of power and a betrayal of justice.

The officers were found guilty of using excessive force and falsifying evidence in the case, which resulted in the tragic death of an innocent individual. Despite overwhelming evidence against them, Trump has chosen to grant them clemency, sending a dangerous message that police misconduct will not be held accountable.

This pardon is a stark reminder of the systemic issues within law enforcement and the need for meaningful reform. It highlights the need for transparency, accountability, and justice in our criminal justice system.

As the public grapples with this controversial decision, it serves as a call to action for all individuals to continue advocating for justice and holding those in power accountable. The fight for equality, fairness, and integrity in our society must continue, regardless of political affiliations or personal biases. Let us stand together in demanding justice for all and working towards a more just and equitable future.

  • Amid Trump promise of mass deportations, NYPD memo reminds officers their job is not to help ICE

In anticipation of President Trump’s promises to execute mass deportations immediately after taking office, the NYPD issued an internal memo reminding cops of existing laws blocking them from lending a hand to federal immigration authorities.

While the mayor has publicly declined to answer whether he will cooperate with federal immigration raids on New York, the NYPD memo is the latest in a flurry of behind-the-scenes activity to remind city staff of laws blocking cooperation with federal immigration authorities.

The internal operations order, issued by Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch on Saturday, reminded cops they can’t engage or assist with immigration enforcement or allow NYPD resources to be used for that purpose, either.

“The fact that a person is present in the United States without lawful authorization is a civil matter, not a crime,” Tisch wrote.

The Trump administration announced on Tuesday that agents with Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection could make arrests at or near “sensitive” locations like churches and schools.

That announcement and the slew of executive orders targeted at immigration have sparked fear among immigrants and advocates. Those included an executive order seeking to end the constitutional right to birthright citizenship.

The memo, going into detail, said that police officers cannot contact the feds to tell them where individuals are located, cannot detain them and cannot use Police Department facilities to help ICE.

Officers who encounter ICE conducting immigration raids must inform the Operations Division of the NYPD, who will then reach out to duty chiefs and the Legal Bureau. The Operations Division was also told to monitor for federal immigration enforcement in the city.

Even if federal immigration officials have a warrant, cops cannot release anyone from custody without authorization from the city lawyers and the officers’ operations command.

The NYPD memo comes amid a rapidly changing environment with Trump moving quickly to deliver on his campaign promise to remove dangerous immigrants from the country and stop the flow of migrants across the southern border.

Asked about his view Tuesday, Adams said he has told Trump he will not publicly disparage the president, but communicate any concerns he might have directly,

“We’re not going to agree on everything, but those areas that we disagree, I’m going to personally share with [Trump], and he has given me an opportunity to communicate with him directly on issues we disagree, and I respect that,” Adams said during his weekly press briefing.

The NYPD memo also comes as Trump has directed the Justice Department to look at any local efforts to block immigration enforcement.

The Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs also issued a memo in the leadup to Trump’s presidency reminding all city agencies of sanctuary city laws, Rebecca Engel, director of Policy and Legislative Affairs at the office, said at a City Council oversight hearing last week.

The Law Department also hosted a briefing earlier this month to give general counsels a refresher on the city’s laws ahead of Trump’s expected immigration actions.

And New York City’s public school system hosted training sessions on the city’s laws this month for principals and administrators, telling staff what to do if feds request access to school grounds.

The memo, which was sent out to all NYPD officers, emphasizes that their primary responsibility is to protect and serve all residents of New York City, regardless of their immigration status. It instructs officers to focus on building trust within immigrant communities and to refrain from engaging in activities that could instill fear or lead to the deportation of individuals.

This reminder comes at a time when tensions are high surrounding immigration policies and the role of local law enforcement in assisting federal agencies like ICE. The NYPD’s stance on this issue is clear – they are committed to upholding the rights and safety of all individuals within their jurisdiction, regardless of their background.

As the debate over immigration continues to unfold, it is important for law enforcement agencies to prioritize community trust and cooperation in order to maintain public safety and support the well-being of all residents. The memo from the NYPD serves as a strong statement of their commitment to these principles in the face of potential mass deportations.
