Official: Lazio purchase Belahyane from Verona

Lazio have officially announced the purchase of midfielder Reda Belahyane from Hellas Verona.

The 20-year-old Morocco international has chosen to wear the Number 21 jersey at the Stadio Olimpico.

There are reports that the agreement is worth circa €9m plus €3-4m in performance-related bonuses.

He had impressed at Verona since his transfer from OGC Nice in January 2024 for just €500,000 and so far this season made 22 Serie A appearances, contributing two assists.

Belahyane was linked with Fiorentina, Chelsea, Napoli, Olympique Marseille and Stade Rennes, but Lazio managed to lock him down after this morning’s medical tests.

Born and raised in France and coming through the OGC Nice academy, he played for the French Under-18 squad before earning his first senior cap for Morocco in October 2024.

The Biancocelesti turned to the Verona man after missing out on Chelsea midfielder Cesare Casadei to Torino.

Lazio have also secured Danish defender Oliver Provstgaard from Vejle for circa €5m.

Lazio have officially confirmed the purchase of midfielder Yassine Belahyane from Verona. The 24-year-old Moroccan international has signed a long-term contract with the Serie A club, adding more depth to their midfield options.

Belahyane has impressed with his performances at Verona, showcasing his technical ability, vision, and passing range. Lazio will be hoping that he can make a smooth transition to their squad and contribute positively to their upcoming campaigns.

Fans of Lazio will be excited to see Belahyane in action and will be hoping that he can help the team achieve their goals in the upcoming season. Stay tuned for more updates on Lazio’s new signing as the season progresses.

  • Senior FBI official forcefully resisted Trump administration firings

Acting FBI Director Brian Driscoll on Friday refused a Justice Department order that he assist in the firing of agents involved in Jan. 6 riot cases, pushing back so forcefully that some FBI officials feared he would be dismissed, multiple current and former FBI officials told NBC News.

The Justice Department ultimately did not dismiss Driscoll, the head of the bureau’s Newark field office who is temporarily serving as its acting director.

The Senate is currently considering whether Kash Patel, President Trump’s pick for FBI director, should be confirmed. A longtime critic of the bureau’s investigations of Trump and Jan. 6th rioters, Patel promised Senators at his confirmation hearing that no FBI officials would be retaliated against.

“All FBI employees will be protected against political retribution,” Patel said under oath on Thursday.

Just over 24 hours later, Driscoll notified the FBI workforce that he had been ordered to remove eight senior FBI executives by Emil Bove, the acting Deputy Attorney General and Trump’s former personal defense lawyer.

Driscoll also said he had been told to turn over the names of every FBI employee involved in investigating Jan. 6 rioters.

Driscoll stated that the eight executives had been forced out but did not say whether he would turn over the broader list of Jan. 6-related FBI investigators — a list that he noted encompasses thousands of FBI employees, including him.

A former member of the FBI’s elite hostage rescue team, Driscoll promised agents that he would follow the law and existing FBI policies.

“As we’ve said since the moment we agreed to take on these roles, we are going to follow the law, follow FBI policy, and do what’s in the best interest of the workforce and the American people — always,” he wrote.

In a message that circulated widely among bureau personnel, an FBI agent summarized what happened as: “Bottom line — DOJ came over and wanted to fire a bunch of J6 agents. Driscoll is an absolute stud. Held his ground and told WH proxy, DOJ, to F— Off.”

The FBI and the Justice Department declined to comment. A senior FBI official disputed the accounts of the current and former officials saying, “It’s not true.”

A former FBI official who knows Driscoll well said, “He pushed back hard.”

Agents who worked on Jan. 6 cases targeted

It’s not known whether anyone other than the eight senior FBI executives have been separated from the bureau. One official familiar with the matter said that top Trump administration officials have made it clear that they want at least some of the FBI agents who pursued Jan. 6 cases to be fired, just as multiple DOJ prosecutors involved with the Jan. 6 prosecutions were fired.

The official said the Trump administration wants this to happen quickly but has been told by FBI officials that misconduct allegations at the bureau involve a formal review process.

The accounts of Driscoll’s actions shed new light on a chaotic series of events over the last 48 hours that began with the news that the Trump administration was seeking to purge the top ranks of the FBI’s career civil servants.

“Late this afternoon, I received a memo from the acting Deputy Attorney General notifying me that eight senior FBI executives are to be terminated by specific dates, unless these employees have retired beforehand,” Driscoll wrote. “I have been personally in touch with each of these impacted employees.”

He said in the memo that he had also been directed to provide the DOJ by noon on Tuesday a list of all FBI employees involved in Capitol riot cases, and also those involved in a case against a Hamas leader.

No one contacted by NBC News had a sense of the new administration’s interest in the Hamas case, but the focus on Jan. 6 was clear. The Trump administration apparently believes that all of the Jan. 6 cases should not have been brought.

Since it was the largest criminal investigation in U.S. history, thousands of FBI personnel were involved, as Driscoll acknowledged in his memo.

“We understand that this request encompasses thousands of employees across the country who have supported these investigative efforts,” he wrote. “I am one of those employees, as is acting Deputy Director (Rob) Kissane.”

    FBI agents encouraged

FBI agents were heartened by Driscoll’s memo, a source said, which many saw as an attempt by Driscoll to make the workforce and the public aware of what he was being asked to do.

“He was trying to do right by the workforce,” one person familiar with the thinking of agents told NBC News. “He’s putting it in writing and naming names.”

A separate DOJ memo obtained by NBC News identified the employees who were forced out.

The list included four top FBI managers: Robert Wells, who oversaw the national security branch; Ryan Young, of the intelligence branch; Robert Nordwall, of criminal and cyber response; Jackie Maguire, of science and technology. All of those people were eligible to retire and many of them did so.

The memo also identified two heads of field offices, Jeffrey Veltri in Miami and David Sundberg in Washington, D.C.

Also on the list was Dena Perkins, an acting section chief in the security division who was involved in a controversial disciplinary proceeding against a conservative FBI agent.

The list did not include Spencer Evans, the special agent in charge in Las Vegas, who sent a message to colleagues on Friday that he was being dismissed by FBI headquarters. “I was given no rationale for this decision, which, as you might imagine, has come as a shock.” It’s unclear whether he has now been given a reprieve.

Nor did the list include executive assistant director Arlene Gaylord, a 33-year FBI veteran who was not retirement-eligible and requested that she be allowed to work in another assignment until she did so. An FBI official familiar with the matter said she had been accommodated.

Experts say the firings are illegal

Legal experts said that few, if any, of the firings carried out so far by the Trump administration have been legal under civil service laws because the employees were not afforded due process.

The Trump White House argues, though, that the president has the absolute right to fire anyone he wishes in the executive branch. The Supreme Court has ruled that federal employees have a right to a hearing before they are disciplined or terminated.

Joyce Vance, a former U.S. attorney and NBC News legal contributor, called the firings illegal.

“Career federal employees can be fired for conduct or performance issues, not because they failed to demonstrate political loyalty to the current incumbent of the White House,” said Vance. “Trump ignored controlling law and regulations to do this, and unless the Supreme Court changes their interpretation, any firing of permanent members of the civil service should not stand.”

Even if some of the employees sue and win, they said their public service careers have been irreparably damaged, if not ended.

One of the Jan. 6 prosecutors fired on Friday told NBC News that they “did nothing wrong” and had no regrets about their work. The person, who asked not to named due to fear of retaliation, said it was discouraging to be fired after seeing Trump pardon violent rioters who attacked police officers.

“We’ve all been looking over our shoulders, like, ‘Is this the day that we’re gonna get fired?’ Because we were doing our jobs?” the fired prosecutor told NBC News. “We’ve been forced to dismiss all of the cases that we’ve been working on of all these people that were very violent offenders. It’s been awful.”

Current and former FBI agents say the purge at the bureau has had a shattering effect on the morale, sending a message that agents who work on cases that anger someone in the Trump administration could be targeted.

“Who right now would want to work on a case that would get them crosswise with the administration?” one former FBI official asked. “They will come after you.”

A senior FBI official has come forward to reveal that they forcefully resisted the Trump administration’s attempts to fire several high-ranking officials within the bureau. The official, who requested to remain anonymous, stated that they were appalled by the administration’s blatant disregard for the rule of law and the independence of the FBI.

According to the official, the Trump administration sought to remove key figures within the FBI who were actively investigating connections between the president’s campaign and Russia. The official described these firings as a blatant attempt to obstruct justice and undermine the integrity of the FBI.

Despite facing pressure from the administration to comply with these firings, the senior FBI official stood their ground and refused to participate in what they believed to be an unlawful and unethical act. Their courageous actions ultimately helped to protect the independence and integrity of the FBI during a time of intense political turmoil.

The revelation of this resistance highlights the ongoing challenges faced by government officials who are tasked with upholding the rule of law in the face of political interference. It serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining the independence and integrity of law enforcement agencies in order to ensure accountability and justice for all.

Notre Dame is seeking a 10-0 start in ACC play for the first time since the team went undefeated in conference play in 2015-16, and the last ACC team to do so was NC State in 2021-22 before Notre Dame beat the Wolfpack.

  • Serie A Week 23 official line-ups

Official: Kyle Walker joins Milan from Manchester City (picture via www.acmilan.com/it)

Milan give Kyle Walker his debut with Tammy Abraham, Christian Pulisic and Rafael Leao, while Inter bring Hakan Calhanoglu back in support of Marcus Thuram and Lautaro Martinez.

It kicks off at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, in the San Siro area of Milan, at 17.00 GMT.

You can follow all the build-up and action as it happens from today’s four Serie A games on the Liveblog.

This is the third time in the current campaign that the Derby della Madonnina has been played, with Milan so far winning 2-1 in Serie A back in September and 3-2 in the Supercoppa Italiana Final in Riyadh on January 6.

That was only Sergio Conceicao’s second game in charge and his side were trailing 2-0 before fighting back to take the trophy.

The Rossoneri have Youssouf Fofana suspended, Emerson Royal, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Alessandro Florenzi injured, plus Malick Thiaw not fully fit, but the transfer market has decimated the squad further.

Alvaro Morata is heading to Galatasaray, Davide Calabria to Bologna, with new signing Santiago Gimenez watching from the stands ahead of his move from Feyenoord.

So Abraham has to lead the attack with Pulisic and Leao, while Walker is thrown straight into the starting XI for his Serie A debut.

Confidence is low after Wednesday’s Champions League defeat to Dinamo Zagreb.

MILAN, ITALY – NOVEMBER 10: Hakan Calhanoglu of FC Internazionale celebrates scoring his team’s first goal during the Serie A match between FC Internazionale and Napoli at Stadio Giuseppe Meazza on November 10, 2024 in Milan, Italy. (Photo by Marco Luzzani/Getty Images)

Inter only lost one Serie A match all season, the derby back in September 2024, and comfortably beat 10-man AS Monaco 3-0 to secure a place in the Round of 16.

Joaquin Correa is the only remaining injury absentee, as Calhanoglu returns to the starting XI against his former club and Francesco Acerbi is back on the bench.

So is Nicola Zalewski, who completed his loan with option to buy move from Roma just in time for the midnight deadline.

After a dry spell, Lautaro Martinez now can’t seem to stop scoring, with seven goals in the last five competitive games.

    Milan vs. Inter line-ups

Milan: Maignan; Walker, Tomori, Pavlovic, Theo Hernandez; Musah, Bennacer, Reijnders; Pulisic, Abraham, Leao

Inter: Sommer; Pavard, De Vrij, Bastoni; Dumfries, Barella, Calhanoglu, Mkhitaryan, Dimarco; Thuram, Lautaro Martinez

Official Starting Lineups – AC Milan Vs Inter Milan Derby: Hakan Calhanoglu Starts

Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi has decided to start Hakan Calhanoglu in midfield against AC Milan. This evening’s Serie A matchday 23 clash kicks off at 18.0 CET.

The big lineup doubt for Inter heading into this evening’s derby clash with Milan concerned midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu.

The Turkish international has been on the sidelines for a few weeks with injury.

Calhanoglu’s last match for Inter was also against Milan – in the Supercoppa Italiana final last month.

However, the 30-year-old suffered a thigh problem in that match. Then, subsequently he also suffered a calf strain which has kept him out for a total of six matches.

Calhanoglu returned to training this week – however there were doubts about whether the Turk would be ready to rush straight back to the starting eleven against Milan, or just the bench.

However, Calhanoglu is ready – Inter coach Simone Inzaghi starts him.

For the former AC Milan midfielder, moreover, derby clashes with his old side the Rossoneri are always especially important.

Inzaghi Goes With Full-Strength Starting XI For Derby

Apart from Calhanoglu, there were very few doubts for Inter’s starting eleven heading into this evening’s match.

Firstly, in goal it is certainly no surprise to see Yann Sommer start. Therefore, the former Bayern Munich veteran keeps up his record of starting every Serie A match for Inter this season.

Meanwhile, in defense it is the trio of Alessandro Bastoni, Stefan de Vrij, and Benjamin Pavard.

Next, in midfield Nicolo Barella and Henrikh Mkhitaryan complete the usual trio alongside Calhanoglu.

Then, on the flanks Federico Dimarco and Denzel Dumfries get the nod.

Lastly, in attack Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram lead the line.

Meanwhile, there are a couple of notable names on the Inter bench. Francesco Acerbi is back from injury, while Nicola Zalewski is available after completing his move from Roma on loan.

  • Bompastor reflects on start to 2025 and assesses Chelsea’s key partnerships | News | Official Site

January could not have gone better for Sonia Bompastor and her Chelsea side, with four wins from four matches in all competitions and our place at the top of the WSL cemented.

Ahead of Sunday’s trip to Aston Villa, Bompastor has reflected on this productive period following the winter break.

It is not only our wins that have given her satisfaction, it is the manner they have been earned and the steps the players have taken to advance the team’s development.

‘I’m really pleased with the way we’ve started 2025,’ said Bompastor. ‘We’ve been able to win the games but also have really good performances in possession. We have created a lot of chances in almost every game and were able to score. There have been a lot of positives in and out of possession because we didn’t concede any goals.

‘The fact we are unpredictable has impressed me most,’ added the head coach. ‘We have different players who are able to score, and we also put in a team performance that allows the individuals to express their talent and quality on the pitch.

‘Danger can come from anyone in the team, and everyone plays for the team and the badge. That is what I am most pleased with.’

Bompastor has been able to make full use of her squad in recent weeks, with the start of our journeys in the domestic cup competitions offering game time to some players who have found themselves out of the starting XI in the WSL.

However, the head coach is unfazed by who she picks, such is her trust in the depth of talent at her disposal. She is also delighted to see certain partnerships forming on the pitch, and she has expanded on some that have stood out at the start of the year.

‘What is good is when you change the options it doesn’t affect the team performance and results,’ Bompastor said. ‘It’s always good for a manager to have this quality in your squad.

‘The backline – Millie [Bright] and Nat [Bjorn] – have been working really hard and they have a pretty good chemistry together. They are really solid out of possession and manage the other players.

‘In midfield, the connection between Sio [Nusken] and Erin [Cuthbert] has been impressive. On the right side, Lucy [Bronze] and JoJo [Rytting Kaneryd].

‘I have a lot of quality on our left side,’ continued Bompastor. ‘I have different options as well. One can be Niamh [Charles] as a full-back and Sandy [Baltimore] as a left winger. They are building their connection together. I have different options: Sandy can play lower, and Guro [Reiten] and LJ [Lauren James] can play in that winger position.

‘We have a lot of different options. Mayra [Ramirez] up front is doing well, and we have the option to play Aggie [Beever-Jones] in different forward positions. We have a lot of quality going into every game depending on what we need.’

It is that quality that bodes well for the months ahead.

As we enter the second month of 2025, Chelsea Women’s head coach Sonia Bompastor took some time to reflect on the team’s performance so far and assess the key partnerships that have been crucial to their success.

Bompastor, who took over as head coach in 2024, has seen Chelsea Women make an impressive start to the year, with strong performances in both domestic and international competitions. The team currently sits at the top of the Women’s Super League table and is also in contention for the Women’s Champions League.

One of the key partnerships that Bompastor highlighted was the connection between veteran forward Fran Kirby and new signing Lauren James. The duo has been instrumental in Chelsea’s attacking play, with Kirby’s experience and goal-scoring prowess complementing James’ pace and creativity.

Bompastor also praised the strong defensive partnership between Magdalena Eriksson and Millie Bright, who have been rock-solid at the back and have helped Chelsea keep clean sheets in several important matches.

In addition to on-field partnerships, Bompastor also emphasized the importance of the team’s partnerships with sponsors and supporters. She expressed her gratitude for the continued support from sponsors like Nike and Barclays, as well as the unwavering dedication of Chelsea’s fans.

Looking ahead, Bompastor is optimistic about Chelsea’s prospects for the rest of the season and is confident that the team’s key partnerships will continue to drive their success on and off the pitch. Stay tuned for more updates on Chelsea Women’s journey in 2025.
