Juventus hope Randal Kolo Muani and debutant Renato Veiga can revitalise their lagging campaign, as anything less than victory against Empoli would be deeply damaging.

It kicks off at the Allianz Juventus Stadium in Turin at 11.30 GMT.

You can follow all the build-up and action as it happens from today’s four Serie A games on the Liveblog.

Thiago Motta is really feeling the pressure now after some dismal results, culminating in a 2-1 defeat at Napoli and midweek 2-0 home loss to Benfica in the Champions League.

Bologna have now caught them in the Serie A table and injuries are also piling up, because Pierre Kalulu is out for a month, with Andrea Cambiaso, Arkadiusz Milik, Gleison Bremer and Juan Cabal all on the treatment table.

Kolo Muani scored on his debut against Napoli, but was cup-tied in Europe, so makes his return here and pushes Dusan Vlahovic back onto the bench.

Renato Veiga, who arrived on loan from Chelsea this week, is thrown straight into the starting XI, with Tim Weah again a makeshift left-back.

Teun Koopmeiners was dropped midweek and comes back here, flanked by Nico Gonzalez and Kenan Yildiz.

    Renato Veiga Juventus

Empoli have just two points from the last seven Serie A games, which were 1-1 draws against Venezia and Bologna.

Alberto Grassi and Giuseppe Pezzella both sit out bans, with Nicolas Haas, Ola Solbakken, Tyronne Ebuehi, Saba Sazonov and Pietro Pellegri injured.

Defender Mattia Viti is also not at 100 per cent, but striker Lorenzo Colombo leads the way with support from Jacopo Fazzini.

It is a return to the Juventus Stadium for ex-Bianconeri player Mattia De Sciglio.

Curiously, these sides will cross paths again in the Coppa Italia quarter-final on February 26.

    Juventus vs. Empoli line-ups

Juventus: Di Gregorio; Savona, Gatti, Veiga, Weah; Locatelli, McKennie; Yildiz, Koopmeiners, Nico Gonzalez; Kolo Muani

Empoli: Vasquez; De Sciglio, Ismajli, Marianucci; Gyasi, Henderson, Anjorin, Cacace; Esposito, Fazzini; Colombo

  • 21. Welcome To Miami – Notre Dame Fighting Irish – Official Athletics Website

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Don’t look now but the Fighting Irish (10-10, 4-5) are back to .500 on the season after winning three of its last four games, and with a win against Miami on Saturday, they can climb back to .500 in league play. Notre Dame’s current 4-5 league record puts them in ninth place heading into the weekend.

A victory on Saturday would also give the Irish their first back-to-back ACC road wins since the 2021-22 season. It would also mark Micah Shrewsberry’s first win against the Hurricanes as head coach.

It was around this time last year in which the Irish started to play their best basketball, rattling off five wins in six games in February of 2024. Coach Shrews says this season has been disjointed – learning to play without Burton, then inserting him back in 39 days later. The team is now settling in and looking to play their best basketball with three wins in a row.

The task at hand is a Florida road swing starting with Miami on Saturday, Feb. 1. That match will tip off at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN2.

The Irish trail the overall series against the Hurricanes, 13-17, with a 6-8 mark inside the Watsco Center. ND and Miami played twice last season: a 49-62 loss in Coral Gables and a 61-73 loss in South Bend. The Irish player who averaged the most points in those two contests is J.R. Konieczny at 13.5 ppg.

    BURTON EMPHATICALLY BACK

After 39 days away rehabbing his knee injury, Burton has returned bigger and better than ever. The sophomore has fired off five consecutive games with 20 or more points, which hasn’t been done by an Irish player since Ben Hansbrough in February of 2011. Now before you ask, the last ND player with a longer streak was Luke Harangody with 14 straight in 2008-09.

Burton averaged a red-hot 22.3 ppg in January, which ranked second in the ACC only to Duke’s Cooper Flagg (25.4). That average ranked fourth amongst all power conference players.

The sophomore has recorded incredible stretches during this five-game stint and we’ll start with the most recent.

He poured in 18 of his 26 points in the second half against Georgia Tech, including back-to-back triples with less than 2:30 on the clock.

He scored the first nine points at Virginia before finishing with a team best 21. Prior, Burton dropped a first-half career high 22 points at Syracuse, finishing with 28.

    CHASING ACHIEVEMENTS

Burton is currently averaging 20.4 ppg despite the two-point early-injury exit tarnishing that average. He’s also averaging a team best 3.3 apg.

If Burton can keep this up, he’ll join David Rivers as the only Irish players to average 20+ points and 3+ assists in a season. He would be just the 15th ACC player since 1996.

However, Burton isn’t the only one who can cement his name in the Irish record books this season. Grad transfer Matt Allocco owns a 3.69 assist-to-turnover ratio – the highest in program history for a season was 3.16 by Martin Inglesby back in 2000-01.

Allocco is also converting a career high 48.6 percent from deep. That number currently ranks second all-time for a season. The top spot belongs to Joe Fredrick who shot 52.1 percent in 1988-89.

    THREE BALL HEATING UP

The Irish have great guard play and it’s showing with how well the three ball is goind down. In ACC play, Notre Dame is converting 41.3 percent from beyond the arc, which leads all league schools.

Overall on the year, the Irish have drained 37.9 percent from deep which ranks 25th in the country.

The Irish have connected on double-digit treys three times now over the past five games. They sunk 14 at Duke (which tied their season high), 12 in the win at Virginia and 10 in the win over Georgia Tech.

Allocco, Shrewsberry and Burton have been leading the three barrage, but Burton specifically has stepped up his game. He went from 30.0 percent from three-point range last year to 43.3 percent this season. He’s tied his career high of four made triples three times over the last five games. He’s 8-for-11 over the last two games.

    THE TAE-KOVER

Tae Davis has emerged as one of the top talents in the ACC and should be a candidate for Most Improved. He’s averaging a career best 15.8 ppg, up from last year’s 9.2 ppg. His scoring average ranks 10th amongst ACC players. The Indy native is also shooting a career best 48.9 percent, which ranks 7th in the league.

Where is he getting it done? Well, the junior has been highly proficient around the rim where he’s 71-of-107 (.664).

He’s also improved from the free-throw line over the course of the season. He’s 24 for his last 29, raising his FT% to a career best 77.0 percent. Tae ranks fourth in the league in FT attempts and eighth in makes.

    EVOLVING

When Burton was recovering, other Irish had to step up and evolve. We’ve already mentioned Tae Davis’ emergence but we’ve also seen Braeden Shrewsberry’s evolution.

The sophomore guard is averaging 14.8 ppg, up from last year’s 10.2. He’s shooting 43.6 percent, which is up from last year’s 39.8.

He’s connecting on 2.8 threes per game this season, with a .367 clip from beyond the arc. Shrewsberry’s sweet spot has been the corner three where he’s 14-31 (.452), which is 9.7 percent above the D1 average.

Shrewsberry boasts higher three ball numbers in ACC play where he ranks third in threes/game at 3.0 and third in three-point percentage at 41.5.

However, it’s important to point out that he’s added to his overall arsenal with a dangerous floater that keeps defenders guessing. He’s shooting 50.0 percent from midrange twos.

He’s 54.8 percent overall from two-point range and converting 60.0 percent over the last five games.

    VET LEADER

When Coach Shrews added grad transfer Matt Allocco to the roster he got two things – a talented guard with NCAA Tournament experience and a leader by every definition of the word. Coach Shrews hoped that his young core of players would pick up those characteristics and then be leaders to the next group coming in.

This season, Allocco is averaging 9.8 ppg on 47.1 percent shooting. He’s draining a career best 48.6 percent from three. As previously mentioned, Allocco is also on pace for the highest A/TO ratio in program history at 3.69.

Allocco also leads the team in defensive rebounds per game at 4.2 and leads in +/- at +91 on the year.

    NOTRE NOTABLES

    • With 13 points in the win over BC on Jan. 13, Matt Allocco officially crossed over the 1,000 career point milestone. He currently sits at 1,027.
    • Allocco boasts a true shooting percentage of 68.8 over the last five games. According to CBB Analytics that ranks in the 99th percentile.
    • Kebba entered the year with just four double-digit scoring performances to his name. He’s posted two in the month of January, including his first career double-double at NC State.
    • Speaking of Kebba, the junior is averaging 2.8 offensive rebounds/game in ACC play, which ranks fourth in the league.
    • Burton is averaging 2.4 made threes per game in ACC play which ranks sixth.
    • Yes Sir! – The freshman guard impressed at #4 Duke, recording his first double-digit scoring performance with 11 points on 4-7 shooting, plus 2-4 from three.
    • Notre Dame continues to raise its KenPom Offense Adj. Efficiency. Over the last several games, it has risen from 56th to 38th with a rating of 116.5. Notre Dame’s overall KenPom rating sits at No. 80.

  • Treasury Official Quits After Resisting Musk’s Requests on Payments

The Trump administration pushed out a top Treasury Department official this week after he refused to give Elon Musk’s cost-cutting team access to the government’s vast payment system, part of a bid by the so-called Department of Government Efficiency to choke off federal funding.

David Lebryk, a career civil servant who oversaw the more than one billion payments that the federal government makes every year, was placed on administrative leave this week after resisting requests from Mr. Musk’s lieutenants, according to people familiar with the circumstances, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe sensitive internal dynamics.

On Friday, Mr. Lebryk — who had briefly served as acting Treasury secretary until the confirmation of Scott Bessent this week — told colleagues that he would retire after more than 35 years of working for the government.

Mr. Lebryk’s abrupt departure raises questions about whether Mr. Musk will now gain control of the payment system — and, if so, how he could use it. His exit also underscores the extraordinary amount of power that Mr. Musk, whose current employment status inside the federal government remains unclear, is accumulating at the opening of the second Trump administration.

Mr. Musk, a billionaire, has dispatched aides across the bureaucracy to try to radically reduce spending. He has told Trump administration officials that he aims to take control of the Treasury computers used to complete payments in order to identify fraud and abuse, according to three people familiar with his remarks.

The Treasury Department executes payments on behalf of agencies across the government, disbursing $5.4 trillion, or 88 percent of all federal payments, in the last fiscal year. The system is run out of the Bureau of the Fiscal Service, a little-known but critical office that is responsible for getting money to Social Security recipients, government employees, contractors and others.

Former Treasury officials said they were not aware of a political appointee ever seeking access to details of the payment system, which includes reams of sensitive personal information about American citizens. Control of the system could give Mr. Musk’s allies the ability to unilaterally cut off money intended for federal workers, bondholders and companies, and open a new front in the Trump administration’s efforts to halt federal payments.

“The fiscal service performs some of the most vital functions in government,” Mr. Lebryk wrote to his colleagues in an email announcing his retirement on Friday, according to a copy of the email viewed by The New York Times. “Our work may be unknown to most of the public, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t exceptionally important.” He did not respond to requests for comment.

The White House and a representative of Mr. Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency did not return requests for comment.

A spokesman for the Treasury Department declined to comment.

The departure of Mr. Lebryk, which was reported earlier by The Washington Post, and the potential for interference with the nation’s payment systems comes at a precarious moment for the U.S. economy. The Treasury Department had to begin using so-called extraordinary measures last week to prevent a government default after a suspension of the debt limit expired. The ability to use those accounting tools could expire as soon as this summer, and it will be critical for the department to accurately track federal expenditures.

Mr. Musk has told senior administration officials that he believes the federal government is sending out hundreds of billions to people who either do not exist or are fraudsters, according to people familiar with his remarks. The Government Accountability Office estimated in a report that the government made $236 billion in improper payments — three-quarters of which were overpayments — across 71 federal programs during the 2023 fiscal year.

Mr. Musk has been fixated on the Treasury system as a key to cutting federal spending. Representatives from his government efficiency initiative began asking Mr. Lebryk about source code information related to the nation’s payment system during the presidential transition in December, according to three people familiar with the conversations.

Mr. Lebryk raised the request to Treasury officials at the time, noting that it was the type of proprietary information that should not be shared with people who did not work for the federal government. Members of the departing Biden administration were alarmed by the request, according to people familiar with their thinking. The people making the requests were on the Trump landing team at the Treasury Department, according to a current White House official.

The inquiries into the Treasury Department’s payment processes have been led by the Musk allies Baris Akis and Tom Krause. Mr. Akis, a relative newcomer to Mr. Musk’s circle, is a venture capitalist who during the transition has focused on the Treasury and the Internal Revenue Service.

Last weekend, Mr. Krause, the chief executive of a Silicon Valley company, Cloud Software Group, again pressed Mr. Lebryk for access to the system, according to two people familiar with the request. Mr. Lebryk declined, the people said.

Mr. Akis and Mr. Krause did not respond to requests for comment.

After the request, Mr. Lebryk sought meetings with Mr. Bessent, the agency’s new secretary, and the Treasury Department’s new chief of staff, Dan Katz, to discuss the situation, according to the people familiar with the matter.

After meetings with Mr. Katz and Mr. Bessent, Mr. Lebryk was placed on administrative leave, two people said. Other career officials will oversee the payment processes after Mr. Lebryk’s departure.

“For many years, Dave Lebryk’s leadership has helped to make our payment systems reliable and trusted at home and abroad,” said Jacob Lew, a Treasury secretary under President Barack Obama. “The American people should not have to worry about political interference when it comes to receiving Social Security and other payments the fiscal service makes.”

Mr. Akis has made similar inquiries at the I.R.S. about its information technology as part of an effort to automate tax collection, according to people familiar with the matter. During the transition, Mr. Akis asked to visit a major fiscal service center in Kansas City, but was rejected by agency officials, one of the people said.

It is not clear if Mr. Akis has an official government role.

Mr. Krause is now working at the Treasury Department and has an employee badge, according to three people familiar with the matter. Mr. Krause has also led interviews of current U.S. Digital Service employees, many of whom are expecting to be laid off after the technology unit was renamed the U.S. DOGE Service.

The decision by Mr. Musk’s efficiency team to integrate into the federal government, rather than set up an outside body, has been driven by its view that burrowing into the existing U.S. Digital Service will give it greater visibility into federal spending. That, Mr. Musk’s team believes, could give it the ability to take drastic action over spending by giving it access to computer systems across the government.

During last year’s presidential campaign, Mr. Musk pledged to secure about $2 trillion in spending cuts. More recently, he has halved that goal. On Thursday evening, Mr. Musk claimed on X that cutting $1 trillion “would mean no inflation” because of anticipated economic growth. “Super big deal,” he said.

In a surprising turn of events, a high-ranking Treasury official has resigned after reportedly refusing to comply with Elon Musk’s requests for certain payments. The official, who has not been named publicly, was said to have clashed with the Tesla CEO over financial transactions that Musk was pushing for.

The details of the dispute between the Treasury official and Musk have not been disclosed, but sources close to the situation have indicated that the official felt uncomfortable with the nature of the payments being requested. Musk, known for his bold and sometimes controversial decisions, may have been pushing for certain financial transactions that the official deemed inappropriate or unethical.

The resignation of the Treasury official has raised questions about the extent of Musk’s influence and power in the business world. As the CEO of multiple companies, including Tesla and SpaceX, Musk has been known to shake up industries and challenge traditional norms. However, this incident highlights the potential consequences of going against his wishes.

It remains to be seen how this development will impact Musk and his businesses in the long term. The resignation of a high-ranking government official over financial matters is sure to raise eyebrows and spark speculation. As more details emerge, it will be interesting to see how this story unfolds and what repercussions it may have for all parties involved.

  • School reacts to video of official telling parents to alter trans kid’s birth certificate to play girls sports

A Texas school district has acknowledged footage of one of its administrators telling an undercover journalist posing as a parent to change a transgender child’s birth certificate to compete in girls sports.

The Irving Independent School District in Irving, Texas, has provided a statement to Fox News Digital addressing the recent video of Reny Lizardo, the executive director of campus operations, giving this guidance, which was obtained by Accuracy in Media.

The statement indicates Lizardo has resigned from his position.

“In Irving ISD, we are committed to upholding the requirements of state and federal laws, especially as it pertains to ensuring the safety and well-being of our students, and we will cooperate with any investigation initiated by relevant authorities,” the statement said.

“We are aware of the unauthorized video footage circulating on social media of an individual connected with Irving ISD. The videos were obtained under false pretenses by an individual who posed as a concerned parent and additional individuals who posed as family friends of the employee pictured.

“The individuals also held themselves out as members of the media, but were not credentialed as such, constituting a breach of security. In addition, the footage has been edited and is an incomplete representation of the entire conversation, making it difficult to properly assess its probative value.”

In the footage, Lizardo said, “It’s not illegal if you don’t get caught,” with regard to changing the gender on a child’s birth certificate, and “if you can get that done, and you turn us a birth certificate that says ‘this gender,’ that’s the gender we go with.”

While discussing potential repercussions of the discussion, Lizardo suggested pleading plausible deniability.

The district insists Lizardo’s handling of the situation does not reflect the values and protocols of the school district.

Fox News Digital has reached out to Lizardo for comment.

HOW TRANSGENDERISM IN SPORTS SHIFTED THE 2024 ELECTION AND IGNITED A NATIONAL COUNTERCULTURE

“We want to reiterate that Irving ISD complies with all state and federal laws, and all employees are expected to adhere to any and all legal and ethical standards. The message conveyed in the video, as presented, does not reflect the views nor policies of the district,” the statement said.

“Individual employees do not speak on behalf of the district. The individual identified was acting outside of his role as it relates to legal and regulatory expertise. While the matter continues to be under investigation, the individual identified in the video has tendered his resignation.”

The district’s statement concludes by claiming all of its athletes participate in the proper gender category.

“We can also confirm that all Irving ISD student-athletes are participating in their sport in accordance with the sex they were assigned at birth,” the district said. “Irving ISD is unwavering in our commitment to the safety and well-being of all of our students and staff. We remain focused on our primary function to maintain educational excellence and foster the full potential of our students.”

Texas is one of 25 states in the U.S. with a law that prevents or restricts transgender athletes from competing against girls and women. In June 2023, the state passed the Save Women’s Sports Act that prohibits transgender athletes from competing in girls and women’s sports and only allows students to compete in the gender category listed on their birth certificate.

The law only allows schools to recognize changes made to birth certificates that were made to correct a clerical error.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott addressed the footage involving Lizardo in a post on X and called for him to be fired and investigated.

“This Irving ISD Administrator should be fired on the spot. Both criminal & civil investigations must be taken against both the Administrator & Irving ISD,” Abbott wrote. “Has Irving ISD and its employees been involved in a fraudulent breach of state laws & a cover up? We must get the facts.”

  • Trump official travels to Venezuela in push for Maduro regime to take back Tren de Aragua gang members

President Donald Trump’s envoy for special missions, Richard Grenell, has traveled to Venezuela to deliver an in-person message to socialist dictator Nicolás Maduro about accepting violent criminals deported from the United States.

On a call with reporters Friday, Mauricio Claver-Carone, the U.S. special envoy to Latin America, said Grenell will tell Maduro to take back all the Venezuelan criminals and Tren de Aragua gang members that have been “exported to the United States, and to do so unequivocally and without condition.”

Grenell will also demand that Venezuela immediately release American hostages being held in that country, Claver-Carone said.

The trip “focuses on two very specific issues. That we expect that Venezuelan criminals and gangs will be returned, as they are, to every country in the world, without conditions, and two, that American hostages need to be released immediately, unequivocally,” he explained.

“This is not a quid pro quo. It’s not a negotiation in exchange for anything. President Trump himself has made that very clear.”

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed Friday that Grenell had arrived in Venezuela on orders from the president.

‘WEAPONIZED MIGRATION’: US FACES DEADLY CONSEQUENCES WITH MADURO IN POWER, VENEZUELAN OPPOSITION WARNS

Despite widespread belief among Venezuelans and much of the international community that Maduro lost the 2024 Venezuelan presidential election to opposition candidate Edmundo González Urrutia, he was sworn into his third six-year term earlier this month.

The U.S. does not recognize Maduro as the legitimate head of state of Venezuela.

Opposition leader María Corina Machado has called on Venezuelan citizens to protest the Maduro regime and demand that González be installed as the rightful president of Venezuela.

As many as 10 Americans are currently detained in Venezuela, although the State Department has not declared them wrongfully detained. Three are U.S. citizens who allegedly participated in a plot to destabilize the country, according to Venezuelan Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello.

The State Department has denied any U.S. involvement with a plot to overthrow Maduro.

It remains unclear how many Americans are currently held in Venezuela following the significant prisoner swap in 2023 when Washington and Caracas negotiated the release of dozens of prisoners, including 10 Americans, in exchange for Colombian businessman Alex Saab, a close ally of Maduro.

Saab was arrested during the first Trump administration on charges related to a $350 million bribery scheme.

The Trump administration is ramping up pressure on the Maduro regime in Venezuela by sending a high-ranking official to the country to push for the extradition of the notorious Tren de Aragua gang members. The gang, known for its brutal tactics and involvement in drug trafficking, has long been a thorn in the side of Venezuelan authorities.

The official, who has not been named for security reasons, is expected to meet with top government officials in Caracas to discuss the extradition of the gang members to the United States. The Trump administration has accused the Maduro regime of harboring and protecting criminal organizations like the Tren de Aragua in exchange for their support.

The move is part of a larger effort by the Trump administration to increase pressure on the Maduro regime and crack down on criminal organizations operating in Venezuela. The Tren de Aragua is just one of many gangs causing chaos and violence in the country, and the Trump administration is determined to see them brought to justice.

Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as the Trump official makes their way to Venezuela and pushes for the Maduro regime to take back the Tren de Aragua gang members.

  • US charges former Federal Reserve official with spying for China

US prosecutors announced Friday that they had charged a former Federal Reserve adviser with economic espionage on behalf of China, accusing him of trying to steal trade secrets.

The US Department of Justice said it had charged John Harold Rogers, 63, with spying on behalf of Beijing while employed as a senior adviser at the Federal Reserve Board of Governors (FRB).

The indictment, unsealed on Friday, said Rogers had leaked secret information from the Fed’s board and from its powerful rate-setting committee while he was working for the FRB’s Division of International Finance.

“The confidential information that Rogers allegedly shared with his Chinese co-conspirators, who worked for the intelligence and security apparatus of China and who posed as graduate students at a PRC university, is economically valuable when secret,” the DOJ said in a statement.

The DOJ said that, since 2018, Rogers had “allegedly exploited his employment with the FRB by soliciting trade-secret information regarding proprietary economic data sets”, including deliberations on tariffs against China.

“He passed that information electronically to his personal email account, in violation of FRB policy, or printed it prior to travelling to China, in preparation for meetings with his co-conspirators,” they added.

In a shocking turn of events, a former Federal Reserve official has been charged with spying for China. The US government has accused the individual of passing sensitive economic information to Chinese authorities in exchange for monetary bribes.

This revelation has sent shockwaves throughout the intelligence community, as it raises concerns about the security of the US financial system and the potential impact on national security. The accused individual, who held a high-ranking position at the Federal Reserve, allegedly used his access to confidential information to benefit a foreign government.

The charges highlight the ongoing threat posed by foreign espionage and the need for heightened vigilance in safeguarding sensitive information. It also serves as a stark reminder of the importance of maintaining strict security protocols and ensuring the loyalty of those entrusted with critical roles in government agencies.

As the case unfolds, it will be interesting to see how the US government responds to this breach of trust and what measures will be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future. The implications of this scandal are far-reaching and underscore the need for continued diligence in protecting national interests from foreign espionage.
