As a true freshman at Ohio State — the school that produced Ezekiel Elliott, J.K. Dobbins, Carlos Hyde, and others — Henderson started 11 of 13 games played. And in just his third career game at the collegiate level, he broke Archie Griffin’s single-game rushing yardage record.

In that legendary true freshman season, Henderson amassed 1,248 rushing yards and 15 rushing TDs on 183 carries, while also catching 27 passes for 316 yards and four scores. A foot injury limited Henderson to just eight games in 2022, but in 2023, he bounced back with 1,155 total yards and 11 TDs on the ground. This season,

At 5’10”, 208 pounds, Henderson perfectly fits the mold of the dynamic two-phase, three-down modern NFL weapon. As a runner, Henderson is a forward-pressing brawler with the twitch to warp spatial relationships and the tenacity to capitalize. As a receiver, he’s a diverse RAC threat who can be employed in various ways. His speed and explosiveness serve as central traits across both realms.

Henderson would have been a candidate for RB1 on my board had he declared for the 2024 NFL Draft. He’ll have steeper competition in 2025, but his profile is still very complete, with the top-end physical qualities to imply dynamic upside.

Because Henderson translates better when he’s tasked with efficiently working upfield, he’d likely fit best in inside zone, gap, and counter schemes. Yet, his speed ensures that he can provide value in wide and outside-zone concepts as well. Henderson’s receiving ability will also make him a weapon on later downs right from Day 1.

The biggest question for Henderson and his NFL projection is whether he can stay healthy and for how long. He has struggled to play a full season. Still, even if a team only gets one full contract out of him at peak form, he can be an electric weapon over that time span.

In PFN’s latest seven-round 2025 NFL mock draft , Henderson is projected to get picked No. 55 overall by the Los Angeles Chargers.

Here’s what PFN’s Dalton Miller had to say about the projected pick: “Jim Harbaugh saw how special Henderson was playing on the opposite sideline from him at Michigan early in Henderson’s college career. That outrageous explosiveness returned in 2024.

TreVeyon Henderson is a threat to score with the ball at any moment due to his home run speed and ability to make defenders miss.

Henderson’s vision is one key to his success. He quickly scans the line of scrimmage and hits the closest open lane. He displays great patience in following his blockers to daylight and into the open field. His feet and eyes are paired together and in sync to slice through the defensive front. He showcases good change-of-direction skills to find answers around closing defenders.

Henderson is a dynamic and explosive athlete who’s capable of generating consistent big plays. His burst/acceleration stresses second-level defenders to remain disciplined with their run fits. He only needs a crease to gash the defense for chunk yardage. Henderson has outstanding suddenness to tempo his runs and explodes past defenders. He reaches top speed quickly, too.

Henderson runs with active footwork and different variations of tempo changes to keep defenses off-balance. He has nice dead-leg and hesitation-movement patterns that set up blocks and advantageous angles/leverages for his attacks.

In the passing game, he is functional at best. He should not be viewed as a high-end and creative receiving option. He will run shallow and underneath routes but does not offer much further down the field outside of a wheel/rail route.

Henderson is a willing pass protector, but he lacks the technique to optimize his low center of gravity/natural leverage. He will benefit from getting his hands latched and dropping his anchor sooner while not always waiting to absorb full-speed contact.

After his great freshman season, Henderson struggled to stay healthy as Ohio State’s RB1. That may limit his chances of being a bell cow in the NFL. Being in a nice rotation will keep him healthy throughout the season.

In conclusion, Henderson is a proven playmaker as a runner and receiver—dump-offs and screens, preferably. If an NFL team uses a committee, Henderson can handle the RB1 or lead-back role, but he will realistically be a change-of-pace runner who brings explosive playmaking ability to the offense.

The Buckeyes got their chance at revenge in the CFP Semifinal at the Rose Bowl and certainly made the most of it, beating Oregon 41-21. This result in Pasadena is something Kelly pointed to while calling out his former team for using the intentional penalty.

“It was a unique message to our players, that you can’t stop us with 11,” Kelly said. “You had to stop us with 12. And then you saw the final result of 11 vs. 11.”

The play — which was met with some controversy — happened on the final possession of the game when Ohio State was looking to put together a game-winning drive down by one. With 22 seconds to play, Ohio State quarterback Will Howard found star freshman receiver Jeremiah Smith for a completion that put the Buckeyes well within game-winning field-goal range at the Oregon 21-yard line.

However, Smith was called for an offensive pass interference penalty, which set the Buckeyes back to the Ducks’ 43-yard line. Smith spoke with the media ahead of the Rose Bowl and admitted he still thinks about that penalty, even calling it a “crazy call.”

“I think about that call probably every day,” Smith said. “It was a crazy call. The DB was holding me; I just cleared his hands. I guess receivers can’t be physical in football anymore, but DBs could hold 10 yards, 15 yards down the field. It’s behind me. I know the move from here on out when the DB is grabbing me. I guess you can’t be physical as a receiver in college football anymore. We’ll just see how things play out in this game.”

The Buckeyes got the last laugh and will now have a chance to officially put that tough loss behind them when they kick off against Notre Dame from Atlanta on Monday night.

Pat McAfee Doesn’t Hold Back About Ohio State Buckeyes’ Will Howard

The Ohio State Buckeyes are just one win away from a national championship. Will Howard has been a huge part of making this season happen for the program.

After joining Ohio State via the transfer portal ahead of the 2024 season, Howard was viewed as a potential weak link coming into the year. However, he has quickly turned himself into one of the main reasons that they’re favored to win it all on Monday night.

Howard has put together an impressive season. He has thrown the ball well, shown top-tier leadership skills, and made plays on the ground.

Despite having such a big season, Howard is not receiving much hype when it comes to the NFL Draft.

Pat McAfee, one of the most popular sports analysts in the business right now, did not hold back his opinion about the Buckeyes’ star quarterback.

“Everybody’s talking about Shedeur (Sanders), Jalen Milroe, Quinn Ewers, Cam Ward,” McAfee said. “Nobody’s talking about Will Howard, except for us. And I didn’t talk about Will Howard all year.”

When it comes to the NFL Draft, McAfee cannot believe how little is being said about the Ohio State signal caller.

“I like this guy. I like him a lot… I think Mel Kiper is projecting him to be in the fourth round. I am baffled by that, especially with what he’s been doing on the biggest stages that you can get in college ball.”

Throughout the course of the 2024 college football season, Howard has completed 72.6 percent of his pass attempts for 3,779 yards, 33 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. He has also chipped in 169 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground.

Without him leading the way, there is a very good chance that the Buckeyes would not be preparing to play on Monday night.

It’s about time for the media to wake up and realize just how good Howard actually has been. There is a chance that he could develop into being a legitimate NFL quarterback.

All of that being said, the draft experts and media have not given him much hype. Howard has remained a relatively non-talked about player by the national media. He’s alright with that, but McAfee bringing attention to it is well-deserved.

Quinshon Judkins ended up taking the Michigan loss in stride when it was all said and done. In fact, it galvanized Ohio State over the course of the next three games.

There’s using it as motivation and then there’s what the Buckeyes did in the College Football Playoff. Ohio State dominated Tennessee and Oregon and then shut down Texas‘ offense in the bracket.

Now win away, maybe Judkins and Ohio State can thank Michigan for the spark.

“I think in that moment that kind of gave us a little spark,” Judkins said, via Chris Vannini of The Athletic. “Like, definitely, I would say it made us want to go harder man, and realize, okay, like that was super disrespectful. I think it made a lot of guys wake up in that moment. But did anything change about our team?

“I don’t think so. I think we prepared the same way and have the same edge as we did in the beginning of the season. So I think that just made us just really go a little harder.”

After losing the “The Game” to conclude the regular season, head coach Ryan Day looked like a dead man walking. Yes, the Buckeyes still had the most talented roster on paper, but there were concerns if Ohio State could actually make a run with four straight wins.

ATLANTA – Quinshon Judkins has a thing for national championships. Just minutes after Ohio State fans had to watch Michigan celebrate winning their first national title in over a quarter century, Judkins announced he was transferring to the Buckeyes.

That announcement came just over a year ago. “Feels like yesterday, though. It’s crazy,” Judkins said.

The running back sat in the locker room at AT&T Stadium, taking everything in. The Scarlet and Gray had just beaten Texas 28-14 in the Cotton Bowl to book a place in the national championship game.

Judkins, who only had 36 rushing yards but scored two touchdowns against the Longhorns, watched as Ohio State defensive end Jack Sawyer sacked former teammate Quinn Ewers, scooping up the fumbled ball and running 83 yards to the opposite endzone to all but seal the win.

It was an emotional moment for Sawyer, a fourth-year Buckeye from Columbus, Ohio, and Judkins only had one thing on his mind. 

“We are going to the natty,” Judkins recalled thinking.

A native of Pike Road, Alabama, Judkins doesn’t have the same connection to the Scarlet and Gray as Sawyer. Having only been at Ohio State for just over a year after two seasons at Ole Miss, Judkins doesn’t have the memories of being a Buckeye like many of his teammates.

He will remember the journey the Scarlet and Gray have taken over the last year to get to Atlanta and play for it all against Notre Dame on Monday night.

“Man, to be in the position that we are in right now is truly amazing, and I’m just so blessed,” Judkins said. “Just speaking for myself, like, I believe in this team, we’ve been through so much, and the adversity that everyone has been through on this team, and everyone has a story and it’s just truly amazing how God brought us all together to go out there and just give it our all.”

Like all of his teammates, Judkins has sacrificed to be on the precipice of winning a national championship. But Judkins may have sacrificed more than most. In each season with the Rebels, Judkins rushed for more than 1,100 yards and 15-plus touchdowns. He was the SEC Freshman of the Year in 2023 and a two-time first-team All-SEC performer.

When Judkins transferred to Ohio State, he knew he wouldn’t have the same production. He came to Columbus excited to share the workload with returning senior running back TreVeyon Henderson, looking to lessen his workload after 545 carries over his first two years of college football.

“It’s helped me so much,” Judkins said of splitting carries with Henderson. “And just to be able to, regardless if I got the ball X amount of times or whatever, it doesn’t matter because I’ll do whatever for this team. If they need me to get 500 carries, I’ll go do it, just because this team means so much to me.”

Judkins has been productive for the Buckeyes despite fewer carries this season. The running back averages 5.2 yards per carry and is 40 yards from reaching 1,000 for the third consecutive season. While he hasn’t had the massive rushing production game-by-game, Judkins has churned out yards, becoming a reliable scoring weapon for the Scarlet and Gray with 13 total touchdowns this year, second most on the team.

Judkins has also helped make Henderson better. The senior, who was banged up each of the last two seasons, is on pace for his best season since his freshman year, with 963 rushing yards and 11 total touchdowns. Henderson’s 7.33 yards per carry ranks him in the top 15 nationally.

If Henderson manages 33 rushing yards and Judkins has 40, it will be the third time in Ohio State history two players have rushed for 1,000 yards or more in a single season.

“Just having Quinshon, that has helped a lot,” Henderson said in November. “Splitting carries and splitting time with him, that has played a huge role.”

In Ohio State’s three Playoff games, the Buckeyes have averaged just under 140 rushing yards per game. While Judkins has averaged only 4.1 yards per carry, he has four postseason scores and is set to play in the national championship on Monday night.

Has his short Scarlet and Gray career worked out like he hoped?

“Most definitely,” Judkins said. “And we’re in a great spot right now.”

Ohio State legend Cris Carter’s program record of eight touchdown receptions by a freshman stood since 1984. In the time since, the Buckeyes have been a factory that consistently churns out All-Americans and first-round NFL Draft picks at the wide receiver position, including the likes of Garrett Wilson, Chris Olave and Marvin Harrison Jr. 

But no one could break Carter’s record until Ohio State freshman phenom Jeremiah Smith came along. It took Smith just nine games into his collegiate career to log his ninth touchdown catch, breaking Carter’s record in the process. He added to that total and set a Big Ten record for touchdown catches by a freshman with 14 on the season through Ohio State’s run to the College Football Playoff National Championship game. 

Before Monday’s national title game vs. Notre Dame, Carter spoke with CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd in Atlanta. Though Carter said that Ohio State’s receivers don’t compare themselves to one another, he was quick to crown Smith with some lofty praise. 

“He’s the best player in the country. He has an unbelievable work ethic,” Carter said. “His high school coach and the people he has around him have really done a great job. He’s humble as can be and you can see that. He’s one of the first in the building at Ohio State. He’s one of the last ones to leave. 

“He has a professional mentality a lot like some of the other great receivers that we saw at a young age: Julio Jones, Larry Fitzgerald, Calvin Johnson — all those guys were unique in their own way and so is (Smith).”

That’s great company for Smith, who received comparisons to Jones before he ever stepped foot on Ohio State’s campus. Smith, the first wide receiver to be ranked No. 1 nationally in his recruiting class by 247Sports, has been a focal point of the Buckeyes’ offense all season. 

He had six catches for 92 yards and two touchdowns in his Ohio State debut against Akron. Smith surpassed at least 50 yards receiving in 10 straight games to start the 2024 season. 

His production has really ramped up throughout the playoff. Though Smith was largely held in check in the Buckeyes’ Cotton Bowl semifinal win against Texas, Smith had 13 catches for 290 yards and four touchdowns through the first two rounds. His 187 yards in the Rose Bowl versus Oregon set the Ohio State school record for receiving yards in a game by a freshman. 

“His releases, his route running, 50-50 balls — as we can see as the season’s gone on, he’s gotten better and he’s going to get a lot better before he gets drafted in the NFL in a couple years.” Carter said.

ATLANTA — Mike Mickens, defensive pass-game coordinator for Notre Dame football, had no problem with freshman cornerback Leonard Moore announcing publicly the Irish will play man coverage against Ohio State.

“That’s fine; that’s fine,” Mickens said at Saturday’s media day for the College Football Playoff championship. “Our system is our system. That’s just what we do. We play it to our scheme. That’s what we have to do. That’s how it’s been all year.”

The FBS leader in defensive pass efficiency the past two seasons, Notre Dame starts sophomore Christian Gray at field corner. Gray’s last-minute interception against Penn State was the 19th of the year for the Irish and their 35th in the past 28 games.

“That’s just one of the things we do,” Mickens said of man-to-man coverage. “We prepare and we get ready to compete. They’re a great team with great receivers, but we have to go for a challenge.”



After a disappointing season where the Notre Dame football secondary struggled to contain opposing offenses, the coaching staff has decided to make a change in their defensive strategy.
