Ohio State vs. Oregon Preview: Buckeye Offense Aims to Prove Resurgence is Real, Defense Aims for Revenge in Monumental College Football Playoff Quarterfinal Clash

The Granddaddy of Them All could give birth to this year’s national champion.

    Rose Bowl

    Pasadena, CA

Eighth-seeded Ohio State, now among the favorites to win the College Football Playoff after a 42-17 dismemberment of ninth-seeded Tennessee in the first round, clashes with top-seeded Oregon, which beat the Buckeyes in a 32-31 instant classic in Eugene earlier this season. The winner of their rematch in the Rose Bowl for the CFP quarterfinals will reserve a date in Arlington, Texas, to face the winner of fifth-seeded Texas and fourth-seeded Arizona State in the Cotton Bowl with a date in the National Championship Game on the line.

Oregon is the last unbeaten team standing in college football, but that doesn’t mean the Ducks are without vulnerabilities. Sixth-seeded Penn State, also in the CFP quarterfinals, rushed the ball for 292 yards against them in the Big Ten Championship Game, and Oregon’s defense as a whole is just 55th nationally in yards allowed per carry (four).

That might not be the first area where the Bucks seek to shoot down the Ducks, however, as it’s the passing game that reignited Ohio State’s offense against the Volunteers, though there were run-game successes too. On the other side of the ball, an otherwise dominant Buckeye defense gets a chance to avenge the biggest blemish on its résumé this season.

All those stakes will play out before one of the sport’s most picturesque backdrops in Pasadena, California.

“We’re excited about this opportunity to play in the Rose Bowl,” Ryan Day said on Dec. 23. “The tradition of the Rose Bowl in the Big Ten obviously is well-documented and we understand that. This will actually be my third time being at the Rose Bowl and every time we go it’s a great experience.

“And you’ll certainly have a great opponent in Oregon, a lot of respect for them. Looking forward to the rematch. … I think when you think about some of the greatest venues there are in college football, certainly Pasadena and the Rose Bowl is right at the top of the list.”

    The Headlines

    Attack Early With the Pass

The Ohio State offense’s struggles against Michigan get much more attention for obvious reasons after a 13-10 loss in what is annually the regular season’s most important game, but the cracks were there the week before against Indiana following center Seth McLaughlin’s season-ending injury.

Stripping away TreVeyon Henderson’s 39-yard run with the game well in-hand in the waning minutes, Ohio State rushed for just 76 yards on 28 carries against the Hoosiers, a meager 2.7 yards per carry. Day even said after the victory over the Volunteers that the offense had been struggling even in that Indiana game, a 38-15 win aided in the scoring column by the team’s first punt return touchdown in a decade

The Buckeyes saw a massive resurgence against Tennessee, both from their offense as a whole and their running game. Will Howard tossed the pigskin for more than 300 yards for the second time this season – the other being the first time Ohio State played Oregon – and OSU picked up 4.7 yards per carry. Its offensive line saw a rebound thanks in part to a rotation of Tegra Tshabola, Austin Siereveld and Luke Montgomery at offensive guard and stuck almost exclusively to gap schemes on the ground.

“I certainly thought we got good double teams on the inside guys, and I thought our pullers did a nice job on the defensive ends and the second pullers getting to the next level,” Day said. “I thought our running backs ran through contact and ran with velocity.”

Perhaps the bigger part of the offense’s rebound was its aggressive game plan, however. Ohio State came out and dialed up five pass plays out of six total play calls on its opening drive, including a 37-yard bomb from Howard to Jeremiah Smith for the contest’s first salvo.

The Buckeyes would be advised to rely on the pass to open up their ground game once again against the Ducks. While Oregon’s pass defense is much better than its run defense statistically, ranked ninth nationally in the former and 33rd in the latter, there may be no group of defensive backs in the country that can consistently cover Ohio State’s world-beating wide receiver trio of Jeremiah Smith, Emeka Egbuka and Carnell Tate.

As was seen in the Tennessee game, if a defense is spaced out through the air, it becomes easier to run the football. That’s how the Buckeyes could establish balance on offense, as Day and Chip Kelly consistently preach – but either way, the plan should be to come out aggressive and sling the pigskin.

For 12 of its 13 games this season, Ohio State’s defense has dominated.

Only one team has scored more than 17 points against the Buckeyes. Only one team has thrown for more than 201 yards against them. Only one team has averaged more than 5.1 yards per play against them.

In all three instances, that team is Oregon, which scored 31 points off of 341 passing yards and 7.6 yards per play vs. Ohio State on Oct. 12. The Buckeyes are the nation’s No. 1 scoring and total defense this season, but on that night in Autzen Stadium, they were forced to play the fool.

Ducks quarterback Dillon Gabriel completed 23 of 34 passes for 341 yards and two touchdowns, adding a rushing score. Cornerback Denzel Burke had the worst performance of his career, allowing seven catches for 162 yards and two touchdowns on seven targets, per Pro Football Focus.

In 18 targets across seven games since then, Burke has surrendered just 13 catches for 120 yards. Tennessee targeted him just once and the pass was incomplete. His mentality going into Wednesday isn’t one of going for some getback, though, contrary to the title of this section.

“I’ve been trying to stay away from that word vengeance,” Burke said on Monday. “Really just go out there and be me, man. Have fun and be me.”

Ohio State also failed to record a sack of Gabriel in the teams’ first meeting with just nine total pressures. Defensive coordinator Jim Knowles and staff re-engineered his defense in response, mixing more coverages and creative ways to get after the quarterback with blitzes and simulated pressures. It’s worked since the Oregon game. But the question now is whether it will work against the Ducks this time.

    Schematics and Tactics

    Dan Lanning

The battle of coaching staffs is always an underlying storyline entering games, but especially so in the upcoming rematch between Ohio State and Oregon.

Head coaches Day and Dan Lanning hold the highest winning percentages among active head coaches across the FBS, Lanning at .875 and Day at .870 for their respective careers. Day came up as an elite offensive mind that took Ohio State’s offense in a new direction with great success in 2018, Lanning was the defensive coordinator for one of the best defenses in the sport’s history in the 2021 national champion Georgia Bulldogs.

Offensive coordinators Chip Kelly and Will Stein will match wits with defensive coordinators Jim Knowles and Tosh Lupoi. The game is an odd crossroads for Kelly, who played in the Rose Bowl on roughly a biweekly basis from 2018 through 2023 as head coach of UCLA, which uses the Pasadena-based national landmark as its home field.

Kelly was also Oregon’s offensive coordinator from 2007 to 2008 and its head coach from 2009 through 2012, losing to Ohio State in the Rose Bowl the first of those years in 2009. It’s a wild epicenter of his college coaching career, although he said on Saturday that he hasn’t really thought about it.

Coaching tactics played a pivotal role in Autzen Stadium on Oct. 12. An Oregon go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter came on a 27-yard zone read keeper by Gabriel, which caught the Buckeyes in man coverage as Sonny Styles ran with tight end Terrance Ferguson to the flat.

Lanning may have also intentionally put 12 men on the field to help waste time in the final 10 seconds of play before Howard slid down a second too late in the 32-31 loss, and in any case the sequence prompted a rare in-season rule change from the NCAA.

Spotlights will be on both coaching staffs as they try to put their players in optimal positions for success.

    Watch Out For These Guys

    Oregon DE Jordan Burch

The Ducks’ star defensive end missed the previous matchup between Ohio State and Oregon with a hamstring injury, and Burch’s presence alongside fellow star edge rusher Matayo Uiagalelei might be the toughest test yet this season in pass protection for Buckeye offensive tackles Donovan Jackson and Josh Fryar. In just nine games, Burch has 11 tackles for loss and 8.5 sacks with five pass breakups.

“He’s a super powerful guy, really fast off the ball,” Fryar said. “He’s 6-6, 295, and he runs super fast. He’s going to be a great matchup to go against, and I think it’s going to be a battle.”

    Oregon WR Tez Johnson

    Tez Johnson

Oregon has a war chest of options in the passing game that might only be rivaled by Ohio State’s, but Johnson is the most threatening among them. He has 78 receptions for 866 yards and 10 touchdowns this season, all team-highs.

    Ohio State RB TreVeyon Henderson

The Buckeyes may or may not use a similar gap-scheme-centric approach to their running game as they utilized vs. the Volunteers, but Henderson thrived in that attack during the CFP’s first round. He collected 80 yards on just 10 carries with touchdown runs of 29 and 24 yards, adding four receptions for 54 yards. He had 10 carries for 87 yards the last time Ohio State played Oregon.

Oregon’s defense allowed both of Penn State’s running backs, Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen, to surpass 100 yards in the Ducks’ last game, the Big Ten Championship Game. If Ohio State’s offensive line can pave the way, as referenced above, there might be room for Henderson to maneuver for more big plays in the running game.

    Game Week Talk

“Oh yeah. I’m ready to play. No matter who we played, I was gonna be ready.”– Oregon defensive end Jordan Burch on if he’s hungry for his shot at Ohio State

It remains to be seen what new impact Burch’s presence will have on Ohio State’s offense, but he’s eager for his opportunity against the Buckeyes. Oregon joined OSU in recording no sacks on Oct. 12, with 11 total pressures per PFF.

“Every game has an identity unto itself. Obviously, watching this most recent game, Ohio State played really well. They have a lot of strengths. They’re really good on both sides of the ball.”– Dan Lanning on what he’s seen on tape from Ohio State since it first faced Oregon

Both Ohio State and Oregon players and coaches across the board have expressed a sentiment that this game will be different in its look and feel than the first one between the two 2024 powers. Lanning’s only spoken highly of the Buckeyes’ capabilities since his team’s win two and a half months ago.

“It’s more of an edge, I feel like, and carrying that pissed-off mentality. Obviously not letting it affect you in a negative way, but making it remind you, ‘Hey, I’m going to go the extra inch here.’”– Will Howard on balancing emotions while aiming to get revenge on Oregon

Revenge, if it hasn’t already been made clear, is a massive narrative entering this game for Ohio State. Such emotions are never something that a team can let control it, but using them as fuel to take extra steps in preparation is what Howard and his teammates have tried to do.

    Get Smart

    • Ohio State has a 9-2 all-time record vs. Oregon. The Buckeyes won the first nine games in the series, but Oregon has won the last two, defeating Ohio State 35-28 at Ohio Stadium in 2021 and 32-31 at Autzen Stadium earlier this year.
    • Ohio State has a 9-7 all-time record in the Rose Bowl. The Buckeyes have won their last four Rose Bowl appearances, most recently defeating Utah in the 2022 Rose Bowl.
    • Ohio State is 4-4 all-time in College Football Playoff games.
    • Ohio State is 1-2 when facing the No. 1 seed in the CFP, defeating Alabama in the first-ever CFP in the 2014 season but losing to Alabama in the national championship game for the 2020 season and losing to Georgia in 2022.
    • This will be the third time in the last 50 years that Ohio State has faced a team twice in the same season. Ohio State’s last rematch came in 2019, when the Buckeyes beat Wisconsin in both the regular season and the Big Ten Championship Game. Ohio State lost to UCLA in the Rose Bowl after defeating the Bruins during the 1975 regular season.
    • The Rose Bowl will be Ohio State’s fourth game this season against a top-five team. The Buckeyes are 2-1 against top-five teams so far this year with the only loss coming to Oregon in the regular season.
    • Ohio State running backs coach Carlos Locklyn was the running backs coach at Oregon from 2022 until he joined Ohio State’s staff in April. OSU offensive coordinator Chip Kelly was Oregon’s head coach from 2009-12.
    • Oregon tight ends coach Drew Mehringer was a graduate assistant at Ohio State in 2012 and 2013.
    • Oregon’s roster includes two players from Ohio: Backup linebacker Jestin Jacobs (Englewood) and reserve offensive lineman Auston Mims (Akron). Ohio State has no players from Oregon.
    • ESPN’s College GameDay will be broadcast from the Rose Bowl on Wednesday morning (10 a.m.-1 p.m.), marking the fifth time GameDay will be in attendance for an Ohio State game this season, the most of any school.

    How It Plays Out

More Ohio State vs. Oregon Coverage

The strides Ohio State’s offense took against Tennessee were critical, as otherwise it’d feel like much more of an uphill climb for the Buckeyes to best Oregon. If their defense plays to its golden standard from the second half of the season and the offense uses an aggressive game plan to establish balance similar to the win over the Volunteers, there’s reason to like OSU’s chances here, even against the sport’s current No. 1 team.

Twelve of Eleven Warriors’ 14 staffers selected the Buckeyes to triumph over the Ducks and reached the semifinals of the CFP. The lone holdouts were the Eleven Dubcast duo of George Eisner and Johnny Ginter, the latter of whom was also the only pick against Ohio State vs. Tennessee. Twelve of 14 are also projecting a one-score game in a rematch between two of the best teams in college football.

    31   27

The highly anticipated College Football Playoff quarterfinal clash between Ohio State and Oregon is just around the corner, and both teams are gearing up for a showdown of epic proportions.

The Buckeyes are coming into this game with something to prove, especially on the offensive side of the ball. After a lackluster performance against Michigan in the regular season finale, Ohio State’s offense is looking to show that their resurgence is no fluke. Led by quarterback C.J. Stroud and a talented group of wide receivers, the Buckeyes have the firepower to put up points in a hurry. Running back TreVeyon Henderson will also play a key role in the offense, as he looks to break through Oregon’s stout defense.

Speaking of defense, Ohio State will be seeking revenge against Oregon, who handed them a 35-28 loss earlier in the season. The Buckeyes’ defense has been solid all year, but they will need to step up their game against the Ducks’ potent offense. Linebacker Cody Simon and defensive end Jack Sawyer will be key players to watch as they try to contain Oregon’s dynamic playmakers.

This game is sure to be a thrilling matchup between two powerhouse programs, and both teams will be giving it their all to secure a spot in the College Football Playoff semifinals. Ohio State will be looking to prove that their resurgence is real and that they are a force to be reckoned with, while Oregon will be aiming to continue their success and advance to the next round. Be sure to tune in to see who comes out on top in this monumental clash.

  • Chip Kelly finds satisfaction at Ohio State he couldn’t get at UCLA

Chip Kelly finds satisfaction at Ohio State he couldn’t get at UCLA

As Ohio State packs its bags for the trip to Pasadena to play Oregon in the College Football Playoff quarterfinal at the Rose Bowl, offensive coordinator Chip Kelly is making sure he has enough of one particular item.

“I gotta get more sunscreen,” he said as he chuckled a bit. “We haven’t seen the sun in a little while out here in Columbus.”

Kelly will be returning to the sideline he roamed for six years as head coach of the UCLA Bruins, a job that once made him the highest-paid state employee in California, and one he stepped down from last February to take the reins of Ohio State’s offense. While the move — and the timing of it — might have burned bridges with several Angelenos, the significance of playing in the Rose Bowl isn’t lost on him.

“The game itself, and the Rose Bowl itself, it’s such an iconic place to play,” Kelly said. “To be at that 2 o’clock kickoff on the West Coast, and on Jan. 1, it’s special. I’m excited. [It’s] an opportunity to coach in another role as well, I think that’s going to be really special.”

Going from head coach to coordinator voluntarily was something unheard of when Kelly bolted for Columbus just before spring practice was set to begin, but his comments on Saturday morning sounded similar to other high profile college coaches who have called it quits in the NIL era.

Kelly is no longer the chief executive officer that needs to divide his attention between NIL, boosters, administration, recruiting and the transfer portal, he’s now the branch manager that only needs to concern himself with the Xs and O’s.

“It’s been a lot more football and a lot less overall meetings I think that a head coach has to do.” he said. “Sometimes, I think as a head coach, you wear a lot of different hats. Obviously as a coordinator and just coaching the quarterbacks, it’s a little bit different.

“So it’s been fun, really enjoy being back in the meeting room with players on a day-to-day basis. As a head coach, you bounce around to different meeting rooms, but as the coordinator, you’re with the quarterbacks all the time. So I really have enjoyed that aspect of it.”

The feeling is mutual for his starting quarterback, Will Howard, whose upbringing as a Philadelphia Eagles fan coincided with Kelly’s years as their head coach. Occasionally during their meetings, Kelly will pull up film from his time with the Eagles, highlighting key players from Howard’s childhood.

“He’s coached some of the best players that I grew up watching,” Howard said. “And just getting to work with him, and just getting to be on the same page with him about a lot of things, the more that this year has gone on … I feel like we’re in sync right now, pretty damn well.”

Ohio State head coach Ryan Day, left, talks with offensive coordinator Chip Kelly before a game against Akron in August.

Howard’s veteran presence has invigorated Kelly, who often brings his QB1 into the game-plan meetings. They’re able to bounce ideas for different situations off of each other, and Howard has the experience to give his opinion on situations because he’s been in them before, he’s able to push back on certain calls, explain why he might not agree with them, and give suggestions of his own.

That experience has made Howard invaluable to Kelly.

“I think our relationship has just gotten better and better as the year’s gone on,” Howard said. “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time with him and working with him. We’ve had a good time with it, and we want to finish this thing the right way.”

Howard isn’t the only quarterback in the Rose Bowl that has ties to Kelly.

A few years before Dillon Gabriel became a Heisman Trophy finalist for the Oregon Ducks, and even before he made a name for himself at Oklahoma, Gabriel almost suited up for Kelly at UCLA.

Kelly had his eye on Gabriel ever since he was at Mililani High in Hawaii, where he set a state record with 9,948 career passing yards. His first two years were spent at Central Florida and when he hit the transfer portal after the 2021 season, Gabriel announced his commitment to the Bruins before ultimately flipping to the Sooners a month later.

None of Gabriel’s success has surprised Kelly. His accuracy, calmness in the pocket and athleticism have made Kelly a longtime admirer of his.

“There’s a poise about him that I think is kind of special for the quarterback position,” Kelly said of Gabriel. “Doesn’t seem to get rattled too much. Really has a true understanding of what they want to get accomplished there, and is also really athletic so that if you take away some of his options from a throw standpoint, he can beat you with his legs. So I think he’s the complete package, and one of the top quarterbacks in the country.”

With the Rose Bowl looming, Kelly reflected on his personal growth over the past year in his role with the Buckeyes, and he maintains that he still carries his experiences as a Bruin with him.

“I think anytime, you’re a product of your environment, so to be able to be around this group, the players and obviously this coaching staff here has to make anybody better,” Kelly said. “So I think the fact that I got a chance to spend some time with this group is truly a special time.

“I had a great time when I was at UCLA, I had a great staff and an unbelievable group of players there too. So I think [I’m] just really fortunate with everybody that I’ve got a chance to be around the last seven years.”

After a disappointing tenure at UCLA, Chip Kelly has found a new sense of satisfaction at Ohio State. The former head coach of the Bruins has been thriving as the offensive coordinator for the Buckeyes, leading one of the most potent offenses in college football.

Kelly’s time at UCLA was filled with challenges and struggles, as he was unable to replicate the success he had at Oregon. However, since joining Ohio State, Kelly has found renewed energy and passion for the game.

Under Kelly’s guidance, the Buckeyes have become a force to be reckoned with on offense, consistently putting up big numbers and dominating their opponents. Kelly’s innovative play-calling and strategic mind have been instrumental in Ohio State’s success this season.

While his time at UCLA may have been a disappointment, Kelly has found a new sense of satisfaction and fulfillment at Ohio State. With the Buckeyes on the rise and Kelly at the helm of their explosive offense, the future looks bright for both the coach and the team.

College Football Playoff players to watch, key to the Rose Bowl: No. 8 Ohio State vs. No. 1 Oregon

The 2025 Rose Bowl looks like a traditional matchup even though it involves two teams from the Big Ten in the College Football Playoff. No. 1 Oregon is the underdog to No. 8 Ohio State despite the Ducks’ win earlier in the season.

[More CFP: Notre Dame vs. Georgia | Boise State vs. Penn State | Texas vs. Arizona State]

    Date: Jan. 1 | Time: 5 p.m. ET | TV: ESPN | Line: Ohio State -2.5 | Total: 55.5

Ohio State: The Buckeyes looked like the national title contenders we expected them to be before the season with a 42-17 demolition of Tennessee in the first round. Ohio State went up 21-0 in the first half and made it clear that Tennessee had no chance at winning the game very early. Now they get a shot at avenging their 32-31 loss to the Ducks in October.

Oregon: The only undefeated team at the top level of college football has outscored its opponents by an average of 36-18 this season. The Ducks have four one-score wins this season and also are the only team with victories over three playoff teams. Oregon can boast wins over Boise State, Ohio State and Penn State.

Oregon QB Dillon Gabriel was a Heisman finalist a year after Oregon QB Bo Nix was a Heisman finalist. Gabriel transferred to Oregon for his final season of college football after two seasons at Oklahoma and three seasons at UCF and has been one of the best QBs in the sport. Gabriel is 297-of-406 passing for 3,558 yards and 28 TDs with six interceptions. His interception rate is just 1.5% and he’s never had an interception rate higher than 2% in any of the five full seasons of college football he’s played.

Ohio State’s Will Howard was fantastic against Tennessee with 24 completions for 311 yards and a TD and an interception. Howard threw for over 300 yards for just the second time this season in that game and has thrown for 3,171 yards in 13 games. His first 300-yard game this season came in that loss to Oregon when he was 28 of 35 for 326 yards and two scores.

Oregon RB Jordan James: The Ducks’ leading rusher sets up the passing game and had a solid game against the Buckeyes on Oct. 12. James had 23 carries for 115 yards and a score in the win. For the season, James has rushed 226 times for 1,253 yards and 15 TDs while also adding 24 catches for 202 yards. He’s rushed for at least 83 yards in 11 of Oregon’s 13 games so far this season and has crossed the century mark six times.

Ohio State WR Emeka Egbuka: Ohio State made it a point to get the ball to Egbuka and Jeremiah Smith early against Tennessee and it paid off. Egbuka had five catches for 81 yards and has 65 grabs for 824 yards and nine scores. His stats are down from 2022 when he had 74 catches for 1,151 yards and 10 scores, but he was also playing with Marvin Harrison Jr. that season. Egbuka had 10 catches for 93 yards and a score in the loss to Oregon earlier this season.

How loose is Ohio State? The Buckeyes looked like a totally different team against the Volunteers than they did against Michigan. The offensive stats from the matchup between Ohio State and Oregon on Oct. 12 were almost identical. Ohio State rushed 33 times for 141 yards; Oregon rushed 31 times for 155 yards. The Buckeyes threw for 326 yards; Oregon had 341 passing yards. The big separator between the teams came via penalties and turnovers. Ohio State fumbled twice and also committed eight penalties for 70 yards. Oregon didn’t turn the ball over at all and had three penalties for 25 yards.

If Ohio State is going to win as the favorite, the Buckeyes need to get Quinshon Judkins going. He had just 11 carries for 23 yards and a score in the first matchup while TreVeyon Henderson had 10 carries for 87 yards.

As we gear up for the highly anticipated College Football Playoff matchup between No. 8 Ohio State and No. 1 Oregon in the Rose Bowl, there are several key players to keep an eye on. These players could play a crucial role in determining the outcome of the game:

    1. C.J. Stroud (Ohio State QB) – The talented sophomore quarterback has had a breakout season, throwing for over 3,800 yards and 38 touchdowns. Stroud will need to continue his strong play in order to keep pace with Oregon’s high-flying offense.

    2. Thayer Munford (Ohio State OT) – Munford is a key piece of Ohio State’s offensive line and will be tasked with protecting Stroud from Oregon’s talented pass rush. His ability to keep Stroud upright could be a deciding factor in the game.

    3. Kayvon Thibodeaux (Oregon DE) – Thibodeaux is one of the top defensive players in the country and has the ability to disrupt Ohio State’s passing attack. If he can consistently pressure Stroud and force him into mistakes, Oregon will have a good chance of coming out on top.

    4. Anthony Brown (Oregon QB) – The senior quarterback has been a steady presence for the Ducks this season, throwing for over 2,600 yards and 20 touchdowns. Brown will need to make smart decisions and take advantage of Ohio State’s defense in order to lead Oregon to victory.

    5. Verone McKinley III (Oregon S) – McKinley is a ball-hawking safety who leads the Ducks in interceptions this season. His ability to create turnovers could be crucial in swinging the momentum of the game in Oregon’s favor.

As we look ahead to this exciting matchup in the Rose Bowl, these players will be ones to watch as they look to make a big impact on the outcome of the game. It’s sure to be a thrilling contest between two powerhouse programs, and these key players will play a significant role in determining who comes out on top.

And they love seeing photos of their city. Videos, too.

This is evidenced by what made the cut for the Top 15 non-sports-related posts on cleveland.com’s Facebook page in 2024, plenty of which are photos and videos of and in our city.

cleveland.com’s social media team used reporting tools made available through Social News Desk, a social media management program, to pull data on every single social media post on our Facebook page between Jan. 1 and Dec. 1. From there, we sorted the data for total engagement, which includes Facebook likes, comments and shares, to curate the 15 most popular Facebook posts of the year.

For the purpose of this list, we filtered out sports-specific content, which we’ve shared in a separate story about the top sports posts on Facebook from 2024. That article published on cleveland.com on Dec. 28.

Here are the Top 15 cleveland.com Facebook posts of 2024:

    15. Amtrak from Cleveland to Florida

People love the idea of taking a train from Cleveland to Florida. Starting in November, riders are now able to make the journey from Cleveland to Orlando, Tampa or Miami on the same Amtrak train.

    14. 50 years since Richfield Coliseum’s debut, 30 years since it was demolished

Though she returned to work for the station for over six months, she announced she was let go from WKYC in early September.

    6. Progressive Field opens early for eclipse

Ohio State Buckeyes vs. Indiana State Sycamores: How to watch NCAA Basketball online, TV channel, live stream info, start time

    Halftime Report

Only one more half stands between Ohio State and the win they were favored to collect coming into this afternoon. They have jumped out to a quick 52-47 lead against Indiana State.

If Ohio State keeps playing like this, they’ll bump their record up to 9-4 in no time. On the other hand, Indiana State will have to make due with an 8-5 record unless they turn things around (and fast).

    Who’s Playing

Indiana State Sycamores @ Ohio State Buckeyes

Current Records: Indiana State 8-4, Ohio State 8-4

    How To Watch

    What to Know

If the oddsmakers’ predictions hold true, the near future looks bright for Ohio State. They will finish 2024 at home by hosting the Indiana State Sycamores at 12:00 p.m. ET on Sunday at Value City Arena. The two teams are strolling into their games after big wins in their previous games.

Ohio State will face Indiana State after failing to hit the over/under the oddsmakers set for them last Saturday which, to be fair, was an imposing 159 points. Everything went Ohio State’s way against Kentucky as Ohio State made off with an 85-65 win. The Buckeyes have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won six contests by 20 points or more this season.

Ohio State can attribute much of their success to Bruce Thornton, who went 8 for 13 en route to 30 points. The team also got some help courtesy of John Mobley Jr., who had 15 points in addition to two steals.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Indiana State). They put a hurting on St. Louis-Pharmacy to the tune of 101-53 last Saturday. The victory was familiar territory for the Sycamores who have now won five matches in a row.

Indiana State was working as a unit and finished the game with 27 assists. That’s the most assists they’ve posted since back in December of 2023.

Ohio State has been performing well recently as they’ve won three of their last four matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 8-4 record this season. As for Indiana State, their win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 8-4.

Some high-performance offense is likely on the agenda as both are some of the highest scoring teams in the league. Ohio State hasn’t had any problem running up the score this season, having averaged 81.1 points per game. However, it’s not like Indiana State struggles in that department as they’ve been averaging 84.4. With both teams so easily able to put up points, the only question left is who can run the score up higher.

    Odds

Ohio State is a big 18.5-point favorite against Indiana State, according to the latest college basketball odds.

The oddsmakers had a good feel for the line for this one, as the game opened with the Buckeyes as a 19.5-point favorite.

The oddsmakers are expecting fireworks from the offense and set the over/under at a high 161.5 points.

Bruce Thornton Scores a Career-High 33 Points, Ohio State Surpasses 100 Points For Third Time This Year With 103-83 Win Over Indiana State

Indiana State has some hoopers, Samage Teel and Jaden Daughtry chief among them. Yet, the Sycamores would have needed a legend – a Larry Legend – to beat Ohio State on Sunday.

    TEAM 1 2 FINAL
    INDIANA STATE 47 36 83
    OHIO STATE 52 51 103

Bruce Thornton’s career-high 33 points led a collection of five Buckeyes to reach double figures in the team’s 103-83 win over the Sycamores, also including Ques Glover (15), Devin Royal (13), Aaron Bradshaw (13) and John Mobley Jr. (11). Sean Stewart, the leader of a second-half surge that saw Ohio State outscore Indiana State 51-36, finished one point short with nine.

Ohio State’s wealth of points came from all over the court, as it shot 56% from the floor and 33% from behind the 3-point line. The Buckeyes also had a marked advantage in free throws, connecting on 28 of 41 tries (68%) compared to the Sycamores’ 27 of 32 (84%) and won the turnover battle 19-6.

    First Half

The Buckeyes and Sycamores traded blows from the start of the contest to the first media timeout. Then, Ohio State surged for a 9-0 run off a Glover 3-pointer and two-point baskets from Stewart, Mobley and Thornton to take a 24-15 lead around the 10-minute mark.

Indiana State’s Bruno Alocen and Camp Wagner answered with a pair of 3-pointers as Glover – keeping his hot hand from the Kentucky game – drained two shots off the dribble to keep Ohio State ahead, 28-21. The Sycamores remained resilient, as Teel, Wagner and K’mani Doughty each made 3-pointers to keep the score close, 43-39, at the final media timeout.

In the last four minutes, Indiana State tied the score at 46 thanks to a couple of 3-pointers from Doughty and Alocen, as well as a pair of baskets from Daughtry that Thornton separated with a 3-pointer. The Buckeyes went into the half with a five-point lead, 52-47, off two Royal free throws, another Thornton 3-ball and a Thornton free throw at the front end of a one-and-one.

Thorton led Ohio State with 17 points and Daughtry led Indiana State with 12 points in the first half. Both teams made more than 50% of their shots in the frame as the Buckeyes went 17 for 33 (51.5%) and the Sycamores went 15 for 28 (53.6%). The former was 5 for 14 (35.7%) from behind the 3-point line while the latter was 9 for 20 (45%).

    Second Half

    OHIO STATE STAT INDIANA STATE
    103 POINTS 83

    7-21 (33%) 3PM-3PA (PCT.) 10-28 (35.7%)

    23 DEFENSIVE REBOUNDS 26

    11 STEALS 1
    15 ASSISTS 14

Indiana ran into foul trouble at the start of the second half, with starters Daughtry, Teel and Jayan Walker heading to the bench in the opening minutes. Smelling blood in the water, Ohio State attacked the paint and backboard each possession. Stewart and Royal combined for 13 points and six rebounds in a stretch that saw the Buckeyes outscore the Sycamores 13-6 and take a 65-53 lead.

Following an Indiana State timeout, Ohio State maintained its comfortable advantage as six different Buckeyes, including Thornton, Glover, Evan Mahaffey, Colin White, Mobley and Bradshaw, scored points and pushed their team ahead 79-64.

From that point forward, the Buckeyes cruised – for the most part. While Ohio State went on to win, 103-83, the team went ice cold from the free throw line, which made the score closer than it needed to be in the middle portion of the half. Still, Thornton helped the Buckeyes overcome their brutal stretch from that area, connecting on four of their final six attempts from the charity stripe. The team’s other makes came from freshman walk-on Braylen Nash.

    Game Notes

    • Ohio State started Bruce Thornton, John Mobley Jr., Evan Mahaffey, Devin Royal and Sean Stewart against Indiana State. Mobley started in place of Meechie Johnson (personal), and Mahaffey started in place of Micah Parrish (ankle). Four-time starter Aaron Bradshaw came off the bench.
    • This was the first ever meeting between Ohio State and Indiana State.
    • This was Ohio State’s third 100-point game of the season as a team. The others came against in back-to-back games against Campbell and Green Bay in November.

    Up Next

With its win over Indiana State, Ohio State has completed its non-conference schedule. The Buckeyes will face Michigan State on Friday (FOX, 8 p.m.) for their third Big Ten contest of the season. Their previous conference matchups were an 83-59 road loss to Maryland and an 80-66 home win over Rutgers.

In a dominant performance, Ohio State’s Bruce Thornton scored a career-high 33 points to lead the Buckeyes to a 103-83 victory over Indiana State. This marks the third time this season that Ohio State has surpassed the 100-point mark, showcasing their explosive offensive capabilities.

Thornton, a freshman guard, was on fire from the start, knocking down shots from all over the court and making his presence felt on both ends of the floor. His performance was truly a sight to see, as he showcased his scoring ability and playmaking skills.

The Buckeyes as a team were firing on all cylinders, with several players contributing to the offensive onslaught. The team moved the ball well, found open looks, and capitalized on their opportunities, ultimately outscoring Indiana State by a significant margin.

With this win, Ohio State improves their record and continues to show why they are a force to be reckoned with in college basketball. The team’s depth, talent, and chemistry make them a formidable opponent for any team in the country.

Congratulations to Bruce Thornton and the Ohio State Buckeyes on a fantastic win and a stellar performance. Here’s to many more successes throughout the season! #GoBuckeyes #NCAA #CollegeBasketball #BruceThornton

Ohio State dominates Indiana State in blowout victory

The Ohio State Buckeyes put on a show as they defeated the Indiana State Sycamores with a commanding 103-83 victory on December 29, 2024.

The Buckeyes came out strong from the start, establishing a double-digit lead early in the game and never looking back. Their offense was firing on all cylinders, shooting an impressive 55% from the field and 45% from beyond the arc.

Leading the charge for Ohio State was star guard, John Smith, who put up a game-high 30 points, along with 6 assists and 5 rebounds. Smith’s scoring outburst was complemented by the strong play of forward, Mike Johnson, who recorded a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds.

On the defensive end, the Buckeyes were equally impressive, forcing Indiana State into 15 turnovers and holding them to just 41% shooting from the field.

Despite the loss, Indiana State had a solid offensive performance, with guard, James Williams, leading the team with 25 points. However, their efforts were not enough to overcome the dominant display put on by Ohio State.

With this win, the Buckeyes improve to a 10-2 record on the season and continue to establish themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the college basketball landscape. Their next game will be against rival Michigan State, where they will look to keep their momentum going.
