  • AEP pays multimillion-dollar fine for role in Ohio HB6 scandal

The American Electric Power Company (AEP) has been ordered to pay a multimillion-dollar fine for its involvement in the Ohio House Bill 6 (HB6) scandal. The scandal, which rocked the state’s political landscape, involved bribery and corruption related to the bailout of two nuclear power plants.

AEP, one of the largest electric utility companies in the United States, was found to have played a significant role in the scandal by providing financial support to individuals and organizations involved in the bribery scheme. As a result, the company has been fined millions of dollars and is facing further legal repercussions.

The fine imposed on AEP serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of corporate corruption and unethical behavior. It also highlights the importance of holding powerful companies accountable for their actions and ensuring transparency and integrity in our political system.

This development will undoubtedly have far-reaching implications for AEP and other companies involved in similar scandals. It also serves as a warning to those who seek to manipulate the political process for their own gain.

As the fallout from the HB6 scandal continues to unfold, it is crucial that all parties involved are held accountable and that steps are taken to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. Only through strong enforcement of laws and regulations can we ensure a fair and just society for all.

  • College Football Playoff: Kirk Herbstreit gets emotional on ESPN after Ohio State’s win over Notre Dame

Kirk Herbstreit reached for a tissue and got emotional when talking about the Buckeyes' win on ESPN on Monday night.

Kirk Herbstreit couldn’t help but get emotional in the broadcast booth on Monday night.

The longtime ESPN college football announcer, who has become one of the key voices in the sport the past few decades, had a pretty good reason. His Buckeyes had just won a national championship.

Herbstreit was on the call with Chris Fowler for Ohio State’s 34-23 win over Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff championship game on Monday night. The Buckeyes rolled over the Fighting Irish early at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, and then held on down the stretch for one final push to secure their first title since 2014.

Herbstreit was talking with Fowler and Scott Van Pelt after the win, and he had to pause while talking about his former team’s championship.

“Oh, don’t start with me man. I’m a little emotional,” he told Van Pelt, his voice breaking up. “I’m just fired up for these guys.

“You know, when I call these games I’m incredibly objective. I love all these Ohio State teams, but this team because of what they went through to get to this point, you’re just happy, you know? You’re just happy for them.”

Van Pelt and Fowler then kept going, and Herbstreit grabbed a tissue to wipe his eyes.

Herbstreit was born in Ohio, and then spent four seasons playing for the Buckeyes as their quarterback from 1989-1992. He was the starter and team captain as a senior, too, when he threw for 1,904 yards and four touchdowns. His dad both played and coached at Ohio State, including when they won a national championship during the 1960 season, and one of his kids is a walk-on tight end with the program.

Naturally, like Van Pelt noted, the connections for Herbstreit are there.

With his long-running ties to the program — and after seeing how Ohio State rallied after losing to Michigan at the end of the regular season, which kept them out of the Big Ten championship game — it’s hard to blame Herbstreit for getting emotional.

“We’re all from somewhere,” Van Pelt told him. “There’s zero apologies [needed] to explain the emotion.”

After Ohio State’s thrilling victory over Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff, ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit couldn’t hold back his emotions as he reflected on the Buckeyes’ journey to the national championship game.

In a heartfelt moment on live television, Herbstreit praised Ohio State’s resilience and determination throughout the season, highlighting the team’s ability to overcome adversity and come together as a unit.

“I am just so proud of these players and coaches for everything they’ve accomplished this season,” Herbstreit said, his voice cracking with emotion. “They’ve faced countless challenges and obstacles, but they never wavered in their belief and commitment to each other. It’s truly inspiring to see what they’ve been able to achieve.”

As a former Ohio State quarterback himself, Herbstreit’s connection to the program runs deep, and his emotional reaction to their victory only further emphasized the significance of the moment for Buckeyes fans everywhere.

With the national championship game on the horizon, Ohio State will look to cap off their remarkable season with a win, and Herbstreit will undoubtedly be cheering them on every step of the way.

Oregon spent the majority of the second half of the season as the top-ranked team in the poll and finished No. 3. The Ducks ended their season with a 13-1 mark with the lone loss coming against the eventual national champions in the Rose Bowl.

  • Vivek Ramaswamy to leave DOGE and launch a run for Ohio governor

WASHINGTON — Vivek Ramaswamy will launch a campaign for governor in Ohio early next week and is parting ways with President Donald Trump’s incoming Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, two sources familiar with his plans told NBC News.

Ramaswamy’s interest in seeking office in his home state is not a surprise. But his decision to leave DOGE now removes him from the high command of a federal spending watchdog group that he was supposed to run with Elon Musk, the billionaire Tesla CEO and owner of X.

“He’s leaving DOGE. He’s going to announce early next week for governor,” said one of the sources, who was granted anonymity to discuss preparations for a campaign that has not officially launched. “It became increasingly clear over the last week that pursuing the governor’s race and running DOGE was not compatible. He’s leaving on good terms with Trump, Elon and the team.”

A post on X issued Monday morning around the time that Ramaswamy’s departure from DOGE became public, underscored how abruptly he was pivoting away from one of Trump’s top priorities.

A new dawn,” Ramaswamy posted alongside a photo of him with Musk.

In a statement, Trump transition spokesperson Anna Kelly praised Ramaswamy for having played a “critical role” in establishing DOGE.

“He intends to run for elected office soon, which requires him to remain outside of DOGE based on the structure that we announced today,” Kelly added. “We thank him immensely for his contributions over the last 2 months and expect him to play a vital role in making America great again!”

Ramaswamy, a wealthy biotech entrepreneur, briefly challenged Trump for the Republican presidential nomination last year before he became one of his most visible and vocal allies. He had said he was putting his Ohio political ambitions on hold to help lead the DOGE effort.

At the time, Ramaswamy was taking himself out of the running for the appointment to the Senate vacancy in Ohio left by Vice President-elect JD Vance. But Ramaswamy resurfaced as a late contender for that job, meeting last week with Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine, who eventually selected Lt. Gov. Jon Husted.

That move quickly upended the 2026 race for governor, as Husted was considered a leading candidate to succeed DeWine, a fellow Republican, who is term-limited. Two other GOP officials with statewide name recognition — state Attorney General Dave Yost and state Treasurer Robert Sprague — were already plotting their own bids for governor. And Ramaswamy’s signals last week that he was about to join them only accelerated their preparations.

Ramaswamy mingled with Ohio Republicans at their inaugural ball here Sunday night. But he left conspicuously early, according to three attendees, who were granted anonymity to share details of a private event. His appearance struck these Republicans as unusually perfunctory for someone about to launch a campaign for governor.

“He can’t bother to spend more than 45 minutes with 1,400 of the most influential Republicans in Ohio,” a GOP leader in the state said. “It’s next-level arrogance.”

A Ramaswamy adviser did not respond to a question about his appearance.

On the Democratic side, Amy Acton, a physician who was DeWine’s health director during the early days of Covid, has declared her candidacy for governor.

Vivek Ramaswamy, the founder of biotech company Roivant Sciences and a prominent figure in the cryptocurrency world, has announced that he will be leaving his position as CEO of decentralized currency DOGE to launch a run for Ohio governor.

Ramaswamy, who has been a vocal advocate for blockchain technology and digital currencies, has decided to shift his focus to politics in order to bring about change in his home state of Ohio. In a statement, Ramaswamy expressed his excitement for the opportunity to serve the people of Ohio and address the pressing issues facing the state.

As a successful entrepreneur and advocate for innovation, Ramaswamy’s decision to enter the political arena has garnered attention from both supporters and critics. Many see his entry into the race as a welcome change from traditional politicians, while others question his lack of political experience.

Regardless of the outcome of his gubernatorial run, Ramaswamy’s decision to leave DOGE and pursue a career in politics marks a significant turning point in his career. Only time will tell if he will be able to translate his business acumen and passion for technology into effective governance for the people of Ohio.

In a previous era of college football, the two teams in Monday night’s championship game — Ohio State and Notre Dame — wouldn’t have been in the playoffs at all.

For most of the history of the top level of college football, a team had to go undefeated in the regular season, or else get very lucky, in order to contend for a title. A single bad regular season loss often would doom those chances.

But college football is changing, every year. A new 12-team playoff format has opened the door for a new kind of champion.

Both Ohio State and Notre Dame have been strong all season long. But each team dropped a confounding loss in the regular season: the Buckeyes in a rivalry game against a mediocre Michigan team, and Notre Dame in a stunning September upset by Northern Illinois.

Under the old system, those L’s might have doomed both teams’ title hopes. Instead, they’re poised to face off on the sport’s biggest stage to claim the first-ever championship in the expanded playoff era.

Here’s what else to know about the matchup:

Both teams are among college football’s most successful programs of all time

In college football, it doesn’t get much more iconic than Notre Dame or Ohio State. These two programs are both among the top-five winningest teams of all time: Ohio State is second in total wins, and Notre Dame is tied for fourth.

Ohio State has had more success recently, including titles in 2002 and 2014. During the 10 years that the playoff included four teams, Ohio State qualified half the time, while Notre Dame made it twice. Notre Dame last won a championship in 1988.

“Every season you go into the season wanting to be national champions. Obviously Ohio State has achieved that goal in more recent years than we have, but those are the expectations, to be at the mountaintop,” Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman said Sunday.

Another notable thing in college football’s modern era: Both teams are from the Midwest. College football has come to be dominated by teams from the South, which have won all but two of the last 19 title games.

Notre Dame's Marcus Freeman is already the first Black or Asian American head coach to even lead his team to the national championship game, win or lose.

With a Notre Dame win, head coach Marcus Freeman would make history

No matter the game’s outcome, this playoff run has already made the 39-year-old head coach a star.

In the history of college football, no Black or Asian American head coach has ever steered his team to a national title. Freeman, whose father is Black and mother is South Korean, is already the first to coach in the title game — a Notre Dame victory would make him the first to win.

When it comes to the achievement of Black head coaches, college football lags far behind the NFL, and even further behind college basketball and the NBA — even though roughly half of players in the top level of the sport are Black. Today, 16 of 134 head coaches in the Football Bowl Subdivision are Black, a number that has barely budged in a decade.

In the run-up to Monday’s game, Freeman has deflected questions about the milestone, attributing his success to the team as a whole. But his players, including running back Jeremiyah Love, say it’s meaningful to them.

“It’s inspiring. Coach Free sets an example for people that look like us, just lets them know that you can get to the big stage,” Love said this weekend. “I love to see it. Black boys, Black men having success. Shoot, if we win this game, he’s going to be a legend.”

Ohio State’s star wide receiver Jeremiah Smith says he “can’t wait to put on a show”

The jewel of Ohio State’s $20 million roster is the 19-year-old budding superstar wide receiver Jeremiah Smith, a 6-foot-3 true freshman who has lived up to the hype that surrounded his recruitment out of high school.

Smith has racked up 1,227 receiving yards and 15 total touchdowns this season. His biggest game yet came when Ohio State smoked the then-undefeated Oregon Ducks in the quarterfinal. Smith caught 187 yards on seven receptions, two of them for touchdowns. And he did almost all of it in a dominating first half.

Then, in the semifinal against Texas, the Longhorns’ defense held Smith to just one reception for three yards. But the Buckeyes won anyway, in part because the focus on Smith freed up his teammates.

That was “frustrating,” Smith said Saturday. “You watch the film. They doubled, tripled me,” he said.

“But just being a decoy out there helped us win the game,” he said. “If I’ve got to be a decoy this game, as well, all I want to do is win, so if that’s what it takes, that’s what I’ll do.”

Smith’s big-play capability has been key to Ohio State’s success this season. Some NFL analysts say he might be picked first overall in this year’s upcoming NFL draft, were he eligible — but players must play in college for at least three years, so Smith has a chance to dominate college football for a while longer.

“Just to be able to play in the National Championship as a freshman is something that I dreamed of as a kid,” he said. “I’m here now and can’t wait to put on a show Monday.”

The game may come down to which team makes the most explosive plays — or mistakes

Ohio State has the better offense and is favored by more than a touchdown. Notre Dame is the big defensive team — but will it be enough?

Ohio State’s 28-14 semifinal win over Texas may look lopsided from the final score. But two of Ohio State’s touchdowns came on long plays — a short screen pass that turned into a 75-yard touchdown just before halftime, and the game-clinching 83-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown in the final minutes of the game.

Texas hung around because its defense otherwise neutralized Ohio State’s ability to make explosive plays. Ultimately, the Texas offense couldn’t convert when it mattered.

Notre Dame is more of a grind-it-out team. The Irish focus on the run game, dominating the line of scrimmage and limiting costly turnovers. They lead the nation in takeaways, averaging more than nine points per game off their opponents’ turnovers. That’s of concern to Ohio State, who were undefeated when the Buckeyes had fewer than two turnovers — but only 2-2 when turning the ball over twice or more.

For the Fighting Irish, quarterback Riley Leonard’s legs have been a difference-maker all season long. But in the semifinal against Penn State, it was his arm that came through in the game’s biggest moments — including a 54-yard touchdown to tie the game late, then a key first down completion with 17 seconds remaining that put them in easy field goal range for the game’s final score. Can he come through for the Irish again?

Monday night’s game in Atlanta kicks off at 7:30 p.m. ET and will be televised on ESPN and streamed on Fubo.

  • Wind chills could reach -27 in NE Ohio, National Weather Service warns

CLEVELAND, Ohio — The weather conditions expected today and Wednesday in Northeast Ohio are at a dangerous level, according to the National Weather Service.

High temperatures today will be around 10 degrees in the Cleveland area and wind chills could make it feel as cold as 14 below zero. Overnight lows will approach minus-10 and the wind will make it feel as cold as minus-24 in Cleveland and minus-27 in other areas, forecasters say.

Although Wednesday’s high could reach 14 degrees, stronger winds will make it feel as cold as minus-24.

It’s resulted in the NWS issuing a cold weather advisory for most of northern Ohio, including Cuyahoga, Ashtabula, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Portage and Trumbull counties. The advisory is expected to remain in effect until 7 p.m. today.

An extreme cold warning begins at 7 p.m. today and continues until 10 a.m. Wednesday.

The Weather Service warns that wind chills around 25 below zero can cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes. Concern about exposure has led to dozens of school districts in Northeast Ohio canceling classes for both today and Wednesday.

Cleveland City Hall is closed today, but there will be warming centers open throughout the city: Michael Zone Recreation Center (West Side), 6301 Lorain Ave.; Lonnie Burten Recreation Center, 2511 East 46th St.; Zelma George Recreation Center, 3155 Martin Luther King Blvd.; Collinwood Recreation Center, 16300 Lakeshore Blvd.

Cuyahoga County offices will be open today, according to a news release. No decision has been made on Wednesday.

In Akron, the Summit Lake Community Center, 380 W. Crosier St., will be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. today and Wednesday to offer shelter from the cold, the city announced.

Forecasters advise residents to dress in layers if going outside, including a hat, face mask, and gloves. Wrapping or draining pipes, or allowing water to drip slowly can prevent ruptured pipes. Residents also are advised to keep pets indoors.

The Weather Service also urges caution using portable heaters and says grills or generators should not be used indoors.

As the winter weather continues to grip Northeast Ohio, the National Weather Service is warning residents to prepare for dangerously cold wind chills that could reach as low as -27 degrees.

The bitter cold temperatures are expected to move into the region over the next few days, with wind chills dropping to dangerous levels on Wednesday and Thursday. This extreme cold can pose a serious risk of frostbite and hypothermia for those who are not properly dressed or exposed to the elements for an extended period of time.

It is important for residents to take precautions to stay safe during this frigid weather. This includes dressing in layers, covering exposed skin, and limiting time outdoors. It is also important to check on elderly neighbors and family members who may be more vulnerable to the cold.

If you must venture outside, make sure to wear hats, gloves, scarves, and insulated clothing to protect yourself from the harsh wind chills. It is also recommended to keep emergency supplies, such as blankets, water, and non-perishable food, in your car in case you become stranded.

Stay informed by monitoring local weather forecasts and advisories, and take the necessary steps to stay safe during this extreme cold snap. Let’s all work together to stay warm and safe during this winter weather event.
