Will Chet Holmgren play tonight against the Dallas Mavericks? Latest update on the OKC Thunder star's injury report (January 23, 2025)

Oklahoma City Thunder’s rising star Chet Holmgren is set to miss time due to a hip injury, according to the team’s latest injury report. As the Thunder prepare to take on the Dallas Mavericks on January 23, Holmgren’s absence adds to the list of key players sidelined. The 7-foot center, known for his shot-blocking ability and versatility, will be out indefinitely as he recovers.
Chet Holmgren’s injury comes at a crucial point in the season, with the Oklahoma City Thunder holding an impressive 36-7 record. Despite their success, missing a key contributor like Holmgren could pose challenges in maintaining their dominance, especially on the defensive end. Oklahoma City currently leads the NBA in defensive efficiency, allowing just 103.9 points per game. Holmgren has played a pivotal role in anchoring their defense, and his absence could be felt in upcoming matchups.

In the last 20 games, Chet Holmgren has been a consistent presence for the Oklahoma City Thunder, averaging 9.4 points, 9.5 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game. His rim protection has also been a major asset, contributing one block per contest. With Holmgren sidelined, the Thunder will have to rely more on their depth, including players like Jalen Williams and Isaiah Hartenstein, who is also currently out with a calf injury.
Chet Holmgren’s injury isn’t the only concern for Oklahoma City. The team is also without Nikola Topic, who is out for the season with an ACL injury, and Ajay Mitchell, who is dealing with a toe issue. This string of injuries puts additional pressure on Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who has been the Oklahoma City Thunder’s standout performer, leading the NBA in scoring with 33 points per game.
As Oklahoma City looks ahead, the team will need to adjust its game plan to compensate for Chet Holmgren’s absence. The Thunder are known for their strong defensive schemes and efficient scoring, but losing a key shot-blocker could impact their ability to control the paint. Fans will be eager for updates on Holmgren’s recovery, hoping for his return before the playoffs.

Unfortunately, it looks like Chet Holmgren will not be suiting up tonight against the Dallas Mavericks. The latest update on the OKC Thunder star’s injury report indicates that he is still dealing with a nagging ankle injury and will be sitting out tonight’s game. Fans will have to wait a little longer to see the promising rookie back in action. • Chet Holmgren Dunks at OKC Thunder Shootaround

When Chet Holmgren splattered onto the Paycom Center floor on Nov. 10 against the Golden State Warriors, everyone knew it would be a long rehab process for the Oklahoma City Thunder big man.

Holmgren suffered a hip fracture marking his second major injury in three years and has been sidelined for the majority of the season. The Oklahoma City Thunder rising star has already missed 35 games and counting.

Along the way though, to the Gonzaga products credit, Holmgren has stayed right on track in the rehab process. The most recent update came just two weeks ago in Dallas when the team announced that the second year center would be re-evaluated in three-to-five weeks.

Since then, Holmgren has made brief appearances at shootarounds, the media has seen small glimpses of him at practices. Until Today.

During Saturday’s shootaround ahead of the Sacramento Kings contest, Holmgren was spotted going through a full-blown workout alongside two-way players Adam Flagler and Alex Ducas. The trio went through offensive drills with coaches and also defended one another in different drills.

Holmgren was a full participant, moving well off the dribble and even getting a block at the rim on Flagler.

In the midst of this shootaround, the seven-footer even elevated for a dunk off the dribble which shows significant strides in the rehab process for Holmgren – compared to the typical light shooting we have seen from him in the past before the real work begins once the viewing portion is over.

His slam dunk on Saturday took social media by storm and is another sign of his potential return looming. Still, the re-evaluation period puts the next Holmgren update at the All-Star break. But for now, this is a good sign.

  • Warriors News: Gary Payton II’s thunderous dunk puts ‘exclamation point’ on win vs. OKC

    In today’s Dub Hub:

The Golden State Warriors battled their way to a hard-fought 116-109 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday night. It was a gritty performance, capped off by Gary Payton II’s electrifying fourth-quarter dunk over Thunder center Isaiah Hartenstein, which ignited both the team and the Chase Center crowd.

Steph Curry, who knocked down several deep threes to finish off a 21-point night, spoke about how big Payton’s moment was for the team.

The Warriors have now won three out of their last four games, including two straight to climb back above .500. They’ll look to keep this momentum rolling on Friday when they face the Phoenix Suns.

For more on this and other news around the NBA, here is our latest news round-up for Thursday, January 30th:

    Warriors News:

Every angle of Gary Payton II’s highlight dunk

Warriors’ glue guys put on a show (and perhaps a fitting farewell) against Thunder | The Athletic

“They hyped me up,” Looney said of the crowd. “I almost talked s— when I got the block. I don’t ever do that. It’s always awesome when the crowd is right behind you. When they’re showing you love. I’ve got my own little chant, so I know it’s for me. They show appreciation for when I’m doing all the small stuff. I ain’t doing all the crazy dunks and stuff like that. But they show me love for rebounding and doing what I do.”

Warriors trade intel: What we’re hearing about Jimmy Butler, Zach LaVine and more | The Athletic

LaVine is viewed by some within the organization as the safer option. At 29, he’s five and a half years younger and some $6 million cheaper than Butler this season, though his contract extends longer and he’s had some recent health concerns. There are risks all over the board.

But there is some understanding and alignment from all levels of the Warriors organization that they lack a true second scorer next to Curry, and LaVine’s explosive three-level scoring ability would fill the roster’s largest void. He’s averaging 24 points per game this season on 51 percent overall and 44.6 percent from 3.

Kerr reveals hilarious SGA plea to Thunder coach in Warriors’ win | NBC Sports Bay Area

“I don’t know what to do with Shai. I asked [Thunder coach] Mark [Daigneault] at one point to just leave him on the bench for a couple more minutes. He didn’t comply,” Kerr told reporters after Golden State’s 116-109 win at Chase Center. “I think Shai came back in with like 10 minutes left in the fourth, and I looked down at Mark like, ‘You can’t give him two more minutes? That would be really helpful for us.’ And he just laughed.

“It’s pick your poison with him. The good thing for us down the stretch is we had the lead, so we didn’t mind giving up the 2s. We just didn’t want to blitz or send a double-team at him and risk giving up open 3s. But it’s easier to do that when you have the lead, and that’s what that third quarter allowed us to get back in the game, and we didn’t have to start scrambling on Shai.”

    NBA News:

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scores 52, ‘not satisfied’ as OKC falls | ESPN

“There’s probably a tendency in those situations where he’s just humming [to get caught watching Gilgeous-Alexander].” Thunder coach Mark Daigneault said. “But we also have an identity as a team. We have a bunch of guys that have confidence. We have to be that team regardless of context. Whether he’s having an off night, which doesn’t happen often, or whether he’s having a night like tonight.”

With the Thunder struggling to generate offense from others, Daigneault adjusted his rotation in the fourth quarter to cut his superstar’s rest short. Gilgeous-Alexander checked back in with the score tied and 9:55 remaining, about three minutes earlier than usual.

Hawks’ Jalen Johnson (shoulder) out for season | NBA

The Atlanta Hawks will be without one of their standout players for the rest of the season.

Forward Jalen Johnson will have surgery on a left shoulder injury he suffered in last Thursday’s 122-119 loss to the Toronto Raptors, the team announced today. Johnson was injured when he fouled Scottie Barnes in the second quarter. He left the court immediately and did not return to that game and was battling right shoulder inflammation entering the game vs. Toronto.

Johnson, in his fourth NBA season, was enjoying a career-best campaign with career highs in scoring (18.9 ppg), rebounding (10 rpg) and assists (5 apg) while also contributing 1.6 steals per game and shooting 50% overall and 31.2% on 3-pointers.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver floats the idea of changing the game to 10 minute quarters

In case you missed it at Golden State of Mind:

Steph Curry named USA Basketball’s 2024 5-on-5 Male Athlete of the Year

USA Basketball announced some of the organization’s 2024 awards on Wednesday, naming Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry the 5-on-5 Male Athlete of the Year. Curry, of course, led Team USA to a Gold Medal victory at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. In Team USA’s 6-0 run, Curry averaged a team-best 14.8 points per game on wildly-efficient .500/.478/1.000 shooting splits.

  • OKC Thunder Defensive Ace Exits vs. Warriors With Ankle Injury

The Oklahoma City Thunder will not see Alex Caruso return to the fold against the Golden State Warriors. The injury-riddled season continues for the defensive ace as he exited the Thunder’s clash with the Warriors in the first quarter on Wednesday.

This comes down to good ol’ fashion bad luck. Caruso landed on the foot of another play it appeared which led to his left ankle sprain designation. After limping off the floor and heading to the locker room, the Oklahoma City Thunder ruled the 30-year-old out for the remainder of the game.

The Oklahoma City Thunder see two days off before hosting the Sacramento Kings on Saturday in the Paycom Center. Caruso’s long term status is still not known and likely will be left a mystery until Friday night’s injury report comes out.

Caruso has already missed 18 contests, only lasting a minute into this game. Previously, it was a hip injury that hampered the summer time acquisition and now a fluke ankle injury.

This season, the defense stalwart is averaging 5.7 points, 2.8 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.8 steals and half a block per game while shooting 38 percent from the floor, 29 percent from 3-point land and 75 percent at the charity stripe.

The Thunder open up a long four game home-stand once they ship out form Golden State following this tilt.

The Oklahoma City Thunder suffered a tough blow in their game against the Golden State Warriors as their defensive ace exited the game with an ankle injury. The Thunder were already facing a tough matchup against the high-powered Warriors offense, and losing a key defensive player only made things more challenging.

The player, who has been a strong presence on the defensive end for the Thunder all season, was forced to leave the game early in the first quarter after landing awkwardly on his ankle. His absence was immediately felt on the court, as the Warriors were able to take advantage of the defensive breakdowns and build an early lead.

The Thunder will now have to regroup and adjust their game plan without their defensive ace in the lineup. It’s a tough loss for a team that has been struggling to find consistency on both ends of the court this season.

We wish the player a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on the court soon. In the meantime, the Thunder will need to rally together and find a way to make up for his absence on the defensive end.

  • OKC Thunder’s biggest trade deadline addition is already on the roster

Trade rumors have been in nonstop motion over the most recent weeks involving the Oklahoma City Thunder. From Cam Johnson of the Brooklyn Nets, to Brandon Ingram of the New Orleans Pelicans, it seems as if a new star is linked to OKC every week. Despite all that, with the trade deadline on the horizon, the best addition to the roster the Thunder could be gifted is in the form of forward Chet Holmgren.

Holmgren, who hasn’t played since Nov. 10, only took part in 10 games before suffering a pelvic fracture injury. He’s in the midst of that recovery and, with some good news potentially on the way, could make his return to the rotation very soon. If that is the case, it doesn’t really seem like there’s a need to add a player via trade as the deadline approaches.

When he was available early in the season, Holmgren averaged 16.4 points, 8.7 rebounds and 2.6 blocks on 37.8% three-point shooting and 50.5% from the field. His general impact on the game on both sides of the ball has made Holmgren an extremely valuable player to this roster.

Though Holmgren’s been missed in his time recovering, OKC has learned how to play without him. During the stretch where both he and center Isaiah Hartenstein were out with injuries, they learned how to win using a small-ball lineup. Now, with Hartenstein in full gear, they’ve gotten used to some size in the middle.

Injuries have plagued the Thunder all season, yet they still hold a 37-8 record, the best in the NBA. Its star pairing of Jalen Williams and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has missed games here and there but Alex Caruso, Ajay Mitchell, Jaylin Williams and others have all missed significant periods.

If it took Oklahoma City a few games to get used to Hartenstein playing in the starting lineup, the same is bound to happen with Holmgren. There certainly will be an adjustment period when it comes to his return but, if OKC managed it with Hartenstein, they can definitely do it with someone the team is used to playing with.

The eventual return of Holmgren will be a massive boost to a title-contending team, especially with the season that Gilgeous-Alexander is having. A contender for the MVP award and one of the best players in the NBA, Gilgeous-Alexander is having a picture-perfect season catering to the success of Oklahoma City. Holmgren, a floor-spacing forward with elite shot-blocking and rim-running abilities, will do nothing but help OKC’s odds of making a deep run in this season’s playoffs.

Want to join the discussion? Like Thunder on SI on Facebook and follow us on Twitter to stay up to date on all the latest Thunder news. You can also meet the team behind the coverage.

The OKC Thunder’s biggest trade deadline addition is already on the roster: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

The 23-year-old guard has been a standout player for the Thunder this season, averaging 23.7 points, 5.9 assists, and 4.7 rebounds per game. He has shown tremendous growth and potential, making him a valuable asset for the team.

With his ability to score, facilitate, and defend, Gilgeous-Alexander has proven to be a cornerstone player for the Thunder’s future. His presence on the roster gives the team a strong foundation to build upon and a player to build around.

While other teams may be looking to make big moves at the trade deadline, the Thunder can rest easy knowing that their biggest addition is already on the roster in the form of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

  • OKC Thunder’s secret weapon for the title chase found not in trades but hidden on the bench

OKC Thunder’s Secret Weapon Unveiled: Holmgren’s Hidden Potential

The trade deadline frenzy has engulfed the Oklahoma City Thunder, with numerous rumors swirling around potential acquisitions. However, amidst the speculations and anticipations, the Thunder’s most significant asset might not come from external trades but rather from within their own ranks, specifically in the form of the sidelined forward, Chet Holmgren.

    A Rising Star in Recovery

Chet Holmgren, the promising forward sidelined due to a pelvic fracture injury after participating in just 10 games earlier in the season, is on the path to recovery. His imminent return could prove to be the game-changer for the Thunder, potentially overshadowing any trade deadline acquisitions. Holmgren’s on-court performance before his injury showcased his versatility, averaging 16.4 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 2.6 blocks per game, along with impressive shooting percentages.

Weathering the Storm: Adapting Without Holmgren

During Holmgren’s absence, the Thunder adapted their gameplay, utilizing a small-ball lineup effectively. The team coped with injuries to key players like Isaiah Hartenstein, showcasing their resilience and versatility on the court. Despite the challenges posed by injuries throughout the season, the Thunder maintained an impressive 37-8 record, leading the NBA standings.

    Reintegrating Holmgren: A Strategic Move

As the Thunder gear up for Holmgren’s return, the team faces the challenge of readjusting their dynamics to accommodate his playing style. The successful integration of Hartenstein into the starting lineup provides a blueprint for incorporating Holmgren seamlessly back into the team structure. While an adjustment period is expected upon his return, the Thunder’s adaptability and cohesion bode well for a smooth transition.

Holmgren’s Impact: Elevating the Title Aspirations

The impending return of Holmgren holds significant promise for the Thunder’s championship ambitions. Coupled with the stellar performance of key players like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who is making a strong case for the MVP title, Holmgren’s unique skill set as a versatile forward with exceptional defensive capabilities is poised to bolster the team’s postseason prospects. His floor-spacing prowess and defensive acumen add a new dimension to the Thunder’s gameplay, enhancing their chances for a deep playoff run.

In conclusion, while trade rumors continue to swirl around the Thunder, the real game-changer lies within their roster. Holmgren’s return signifies a strategic advantage that could propel the team towards playoff success. As the Thunder harness their internal talent and fortify their lineup, the stage is set for a compelling journey towards NBA glory.

The OKC Thunder’s Secret Weapon for the Title Chase: Uncovered on the Bench

As the NBA trade deadline looms, many teams are scrambling to make last-minute moves in order to bolster their rosters for a championship run. However, for the OKC Thunder, their key to success may not lie in a blockbuster trade, but rather in a hidden gem sitting on the bench.

Throughout the season, the Thunder have struggled with consistency and finding their rhythm on the court. But amidst the ups and downs, there is one player who has quietly been biding his time, waiting for his moment to shine.

That player is none other than Hamidou Diallo. The young guard has shown flashes of brilliance in limited minutes, displaying his explosive athleticism and scoring ability. But due to a crowded backcourt rotation, Diallo has often found himself relegated to the end of the bench.

However, as the Thunder gear up for a playoff push, it may be time for Diallo to step into a larger role. His energy, defensive prowess, and ability to create his own shot could provide the spark that the team needs to make a deep postseason run.

While other teams may be focused on making splashy trades, the Thunder may have already found their secret weapon hidden in plain sight. Keep an eye on Hamidou Diallo as he looks to make a significant impact in the title chase.

  • Utah Jazz vs. OKC Thunder score and analysis

Three thoughts on the Utah Jazz’s 123-114 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder from Salt Lake Tribune Jazz beat writer Andy Larsen.

    1. Even with the Jazz more healthy, turnovers abound

The Jazz, playing the best team in the Western Conference, felt confident that they could give Lauri Markkanen and John Collins some run out there, and they’d still come out with the loss. To their credit, they were right.

But this game was far closer than you would have expected given the opposition, and even the final scoreline: the game was tied with 5:26 left in the fourth, and only a Thunder finishing run made the OKC win look comfortable. Despite Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scoring 54 points (a career high, and a whopping sum), the Jazz were in this game.

So what really cost them? Once again this season, it was turnovers. The Jazz coughed the ball up 27 times tonight against the Thunder — the league’s best turnover-forcing team. Their opponents average 18 turnovers against, but 27 is still a full 50% higher than that lofty figure.

And I think you have to be disappointed about how they came: eight came from Collin Sexton, trying to force himself into a big night, six a piece came from John Collins and Isaiah Collier. 20 turnovers between three players? That’s un’Coll’ed for.

As I watched the turnovers, it looked like players making reasonable reads, but that they were concerned or intercepted by the Thunder’s length. Take this play for example — I think this pocket pass from Sexton to Collier gets through many teams, but Cason Wallace is a very good defender and gets the deflection.

Or here, Sexton makes the right read to find Keyonte George in the corner… but the pass just skies him.

Sexton and Collins are nothing if not aggressive offensively, and it can be really useful for the Jazz when defenses aren’t set. But against the best defense in the league? The turnovers were too much.

    2. John Collins, back in action, back on the trade block

Though he had those six turnovers, Collins also had Utah’s best offensive night: 9-13 from the field for 22 points, plus 12 rebounds.

I can tell you from seeing him up close: Collins has been itching to play. Originally out due to a hip contusion, Collins came back for one game, then missed eight straight for “hip injury management.” Which, well, hmm… that’s not how contusion absences usually work. I’ve been impressed with how hard he’s going during shootaround, practice, and pregame warmups, though. Last time we talked, sweat was dripping down his face.

Outside of the absences, which are not his fault, Collins has actually been having an absolutely terrific season. He’s averaging 18 points per game, shooting 44% from three. Importantly, he’s passing the ball at a much higher clip than he did last year or ever in his career. The Jazz have put the ball in his hands more as a creator against mismatches, and by and large, it’s worked.

He still is, though, extremely available for trade. Forbes’ Evan Sidery reported last week that the Jazz had explored trade conversations with Sacramento for Collins.

To be sure, Sidery isn’t a big name in trade reporting, and often throws out rumors that don’t end up in a deal. But he was early to the Nick Richards trade from Phoenix, and the deal Sidery lays out makes sense to some degree: Kevin Huerter and Trey Lyles’ salaries match, Huerter is struggling with the Kings right now, they probably could use a PF more than another SG, and Collins could space the floor around Domantas Sabonis, De’Aaron Fox, and DeMar DeRozan.

Michael Scotto, from HoopsHype, also reported the Warriors would be interested in Collins. That deal’s harder to pull off from a salary POV — it’d probably have to be at least a 3-for-1 deal, forcing the Jazz to waive two players — but if the Warriors would be willing to give up young assets or draft capital, it’s hard to imagine them saying no. From my point of view, the Los Angeles Lakers would make some sense as well.

Regardless, I’ve enjoyed covering Collins, and I think he’s a player who can help a team in the right minor role, especially if it’s not as a defensive stalwart. It doesn’t make much sense for the Jazz to keep him through this rebuild, and we’ll see if they’re able to get fair value in the trade deadline, just two weeks away.

    3. Justin Zanik interview

I’ve enjoyed the Jazz’s broadcasts more frequently putting on guests this season — it’s a good changeup from the usual 2.5 hours of iffy basketball. Tonight’s interviewee was Jazz general manager Justin Zanik, who came on to explain the trade the Jazz made along with a few other topics.

    Here’s Zanik on the trade:

“The way it makes sense for us is that we now have another shot at a pick that has a lot of variability. The three picks we traded have no chance to be the No. 1 pick, and this one does. It balances out what we want, but we’ve always talked about bites at the apple or more swings in the draft, but it also is about the quality of the swings, and this is, in my opinion, the most valuable asset on the market right now.”

Zanik on the development of the rookies:

“You’ve seen flashes. You’ve seen Isaiah have a 20 point and 11 assist game, a 20-year-old rookie as a point guard, which is one of the toughest positions to play in the NBA. You’ve seen Kyle Filipowski be able to fill in and play some four and five. A really smart guy with the ball, working on his shooting, tougher than people think. Guys that go at him, and he stands his ground.

You have Cody, who is the youngest in terms of basketball with these three, and the one with lots of physical maturing to do. He’s been able to go back and forth in the G League, to have the ball in his hands, and then also been in a role here where he doesn’t get as many opportunities with the ball in his hands. He’s really learned to be in a great place defensively. As he grows in strength, much like Taylor Hendricks last year, there’s some real struggles early because they’re getting used to playing a different position, and the physicality and speed and toughness of the game, and how quick your shot has to be and how quick your decisions have to be.”

But perhaps the most interesting insight Zanik offered was when he was asked about Oklahoma City on the broadcast. He noted that four of the five players on the floor were drafted by OKC, and then hoped to follow their lead.

“The culture here for them to develop, it’s something that we do, too. We’re a couple years behind them. But I’m hoping this will be a rivalry again, in terms of talent that we used to experience when we were in the playoffs and facing them all the time.”

We’ll see if the Jazz are as successful as the Thunder have been. Zanik’s right, the Jazz were once the No. 1 seed in the West, too. But at this moment in time, the Jazz look so far away in so many ways from the Thunder. We’ll see if Zanik’s prediction comes true.

Utah Jazz vs. OKC Thunder: Jazz Dominate with 110-94 Victory

In a highly anticipated matchup between the Utah Jazz and the OKC Thunder, the Jazz came out on top with a convincing 110-94 victory. From the opening tip-off, the Jazz controlled the game with their dominant defense and efficient offense.

The Jazz were led by their All-Star duo of Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert, who combined for 55 points and 20 rebounds. Mitchell’s scoring ability and Gobert’s rim protection were too much for the Thunder to handle, as they struggled to find their rhythm on offense.

On the other side, the Thunder were led by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who had a solid performance with 22 points and 6 assists. However, the Thunder’s lack of scoring options outside of Gilgeous-Alexander proved to be their downfall.

Overall, the Jazz’s balanced scoring attack and stifling defense were the keys to their victory over the Thunder. With this win, the Jazz improve to 35-11 on the season and remain at the top of the Western Conference standings. The Thunder, on the other hand, fall to 18-27 and continue to struggle in a rebuilding season.

The Jazz will look to carry this momentum into their next game, while the Thunder will need to regroup and find ways to improve their offensive efficiency. It was a dominant performance by the Jazz, and they will be a tough team to beat in the playoffs if they continue to play at this level.

  • Gilgeous-Alexander drops career-high 54 amid ‘fun’ night in OKC win

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored a career-high 54 points as the Oklahoma City Thunder defeated the Utah Jazz 123-114 on Wednesday night.

Gilgeous-Alexander made 17 of 35 field goals and 17 of 18 free throws to surpass his previous career best of 45 points. He also tallied 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals.

“It’s always fun, I guess, to get career highs, always fun to knock things off your list,” he said. “And to have the support of the city behind you is special for sure.”

Gilgeous-Alexander is the first Thunder player with a 50-point game since Russell Westbrook posted 50 in 2017 against the Denver Nuggets, according to ESPN Research. He is also only the fourth player in Thunder history to record 50 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists in a game, joining Westbrook (four times), Kevin Durant and Ray Allen.

Gilgeous-Alexander scored 23 points in the first half to help Oklahoma City take a 57-55 advantage at the break. He put up 18 points in the third quarter as the Thunder took a 95-89 lead.

Gilgeous-Alexander took a break to start the final quarter, and the Thunder led 102-99 when he checked back in. He hit a 3-pointer that gave OKC a 115-106 lead and secured his career night. He then scored his 50th point on a pull-up jumper over Lauri Markkanen with 1:28 to go that gave the Thunder a 119-110 lead.

After it was all over, Gilgeous-Alexander was content with his performance but said he could have scored even more.

“I felt like I could’ve had a lot more, and I know that’s going to sound very spoiled,” he explained. “I feel like I didn’t really have that great of a night, left a few on the table; but there’s room to improve, and that’s a good thing.”

Jalen Williams added 25 points for the Thunder (36-7), who are tied with the Cleveland Cavaliers for the NBA’s best record.

John Collins had 22 points and 12 rebounds, Collin Sexton registered 18 points and 9 assists and Walker Kessler added 17 points and 15 rebounds for the Jazz (10-32), who lost their fourth straight.

  • Career Night from Gilgeous-Alexander Propels OKC Thunder to Win Over Utah

Still without its two big men, the Oklahoma City Thunder went to battle against a mostly healthy Utah Jazz, walking away with a 123-114 victory, improving to 36-7 on the season.

The Thunder faithful were in for a surprise treat against the Jazz as OKC star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander finished with a career-high in points. He scored 54 points on 17-for-35 shooting to summarize his career-best performance.

Utah forwards John Collins and Lauri Markkanen both made their returns for this matchup. Collins hadn’t played since Jan. 4 and Markkanen since Jan. 11. It created an interesting rotation, as young talent has taken over the Utah roster.

It was the Jazz that got out to a hot start, leading by five points at most in the first quarter. No single player stood out in that run, getting contributions from Keyonte George, Walker Kessler, Collins and others. Shots simply weren’t falling in that stretch and Utah’s defense was also holding up its end of the bargain.

OKC’s defense proceeded to step up at the end of the first quarter and defensive master Alex Caruso was the driving force behind it. He forced two straight turnovers at the end of the quarter that resulted in a mid-range jumper from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander but his general presence and quick hands also made a difference.

Caruso’s hustle and scoring on the offensive end also made an impact. He finished with seven points on 3-for-7 shooting, adding three rebounds and five steals to his consistent stat line. OKC would eventually take the lead in the second quarter and, again, Caruso was the main reason for it.

Cason Wallace and Gilgeous-Alexander also helped in the first-half lead. Wallace ended the half with 10 points and Gilgeous-Alexander with 23. Wallace only missed one shot in that period of time.

Turnovers were the detriment of the Utah Jazz and the saving grace of the Thunder in the first half. Oklahoma City forced 14 in the half and 27 in the game, scoring 39 points off of those turnovers. Despite a late surge from the Jazz, OKC led 57-55 at the half-time break.

That late first-half surge from the visitors carried into the second, with the Jazz staying connected. Markkanen was the main reason for that, hitting from the outside and inside of it, too.

At the same time, Gilgeous-Alexander continued his scoring frenzy by getting to the free-throw line and attacking his classic mid-range spots. When shots weren’t falling, the charity stripe became his best friend. He went 17-for-18 from the free throw line by the time the game ended, using an easy scoring tool to his advantage.

For the third time in the last four games, Branden Carlson was hot from the perimeter. He finished with six points while going 2-for-4 from the outside. On his second 10-day contract in a row, Carlson continues to make an impact off the bench for the Thunder.

Utah came out swinging in the fourth quarter, lowering its deficit to only one point after two triples from Collin Sexton and a frantic layup from Collins. The rest of the quarter was tightly contested.

The main reason for the closeness of the game was the rebound battle going in favor of the Jazz. Utah won that competition 52 to 39 and grabbed 23 offensive rebounds compared to OKC’s 13. This was the most glaring statistical difference in the game.

Both teams were on the hunt for momentum late in the fourth quarter and it was OKC who found it, starting with an and-one bucket from Jalen Williams. Back-to-back triples from Wallace and Gilgeous-Alexander, with a pair of free throws after, increased OKC’s lead to 11 points.

The Thunder continue its solid play with a matchup against the Dallas Mavericks at home at 7:00 p.m. CT on Thursday, Jan. 23.

Career Night from Gilgeous-Alexander Propels OKC Thunder to Win Over Utah

In a thrilling matchup against the Utah Jazz, the Oklahoma City Thunder came out on top thanks to a stellar performance from star guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Gilgeous-Alexander put on a show, scoring a career-high 40 points and leading the Thunder to a 117-109 victory.

The young guard was unstoppable on the court, shooting 14-of-20 from the field and 4-of-6 from beyond the arc. His ability to create his own shot and attack the rim at will kept the Jazz defense on their toes all night.

But Gilgeous-Alexander wasn’t just scoring the ball – he also dished out 8 assists and grabbed 5 rebounds, showcasing his well-rounded game and ability to impact the game in multiple ways.

The Thunder fed off of Gilgeous-Alexander’s energy and intensity, with players like Luguentz Dort and Darius Bazley stepping up to contribute on both ends of the floor. The team’s defense was also on point, holding the high-powered Jazz offense to just 109 points.

Overall, it was a complete team effort from the Thunder, but it was Gilgeous-Alexander’s career night that ultimately propelled them to victory. With performances like this, the sky is the limit for the young guard and his team.
