University of Mississippi – Ole Miss Athletics
The impact of Pat Head Summitt, professionally and personally, for former Ole Miss players, coaches, and staff is significant.
A former college player and head coach of women’s basketball, Summitt was the winningest coach in college basketball (1,098 victories) after she coached her final game on April 18, 2012.
She played basketball at the University of Tennessee-Martin from 1970-74, when the return of women’s college basketball nationally was in its infancy. At the age of 22, she was named head coach of the University of Tennessee-Knoxville women’s basketball program prior to the 1974-75 season. For almost four decades, Summitt and her teams were the standard for women’s college basketball.
In her years at Tennessee, the Lady Vols won eight NCAA championships, as well as 16 Southeastern Conference regular season titles and another 16 SEC Tournament crowns. Players and coaches throughout the SEC and the nation watched with respect. Some of them actually competed on the basketball courts against UT and its legendary leader, who passed away on June 28, 2016 at age 64.
Three former Ole Miss players, who were Rebel teammates, became head coaches at current Southeastern Conference schools. They had competed against Summitt when they were players and later as coaches.
“The game of women’s basketball still today is Pat Head Summitt,” said Carol Ross, an Ole Miss player from 1977-81 and later head coach of both the Florida Gators (1990-2002) and the Ole Miss Rebels (2003-07). “She was the architect for what we know as women’s basketball then and today. More importantly than the blueprint for building and running a program, it was the integrity and generosity in which she did so. Pat put the game before her program. Not sure if many would do the same.”
Renee Ladner was a teammate of Ross at Ole Miss. She served as an assistant coach at Florida and Ole Miss before becoming head coach at Ole Miss from 2007-12.
“Coach Summitt is known to most for her record-setting number of wins and championships,” Ladner said. “Pat’s lasting legacy to me is where she started in the infant stage of women’s basketball and how SHE grew our sport to what it is today. We are here in so many ways because of Pat’s efforts and influence in the game as we know it today.”
Ladner pointed out Summitt’s willingness to share her knowledge and experiences with other coaches in the league and across the country.
“As a young college athlete and high school coach, I had no idea what Coach Summitt would come to mean to me and our sport. It didn’t take me long to figure out that Pat was the G.O.A.T.! I wanted to emulate her teams, her grit and her style of coaching. I hung on every word when she spoke on her lessons in life. I knew Pat was a special person and coach. Pat was a fierce competitor, but wanted us all to succeed. Pat was gracious, approachable and shared tips to help your team. I feel honored to have worked beside her in the SEC.”
Peggie Gillom-Granderson, also an Ole Miss teammate of Ross and Ladner, was an assistant coach with the Rebels two different times and was the head coach of Texas A&M women’s basketball from 1998-2003.
“One of Coach Summitt’s lasting legacies to the game is the fact that the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame is located in Knoxville, Tenn., a place where women’s basketball came to be so recognized,” she said. “She really set the stage for the exposure of the game of women’s basketball.”
Gillom-Granderson shared a very personal moment for her and her family, one when her sister, Jennifer Gillom who played at Ole Miss, was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame.
“After the ceremony, Coach Summitt invited our whole family – 15 to 20 of us – to her home. She was someone who shared with other people. I was always in awe of the great Pat Summitt as a coach, but even more in awe of her as a normal, kind, and affectionate person.”
The former college head coaches shared some thoughts on what younger coaches and current players should know about Summitt.
“No shortcuts with Pat,” Ross said. “Love your players. Respect the profession. Communicate directly and fairly. Compete for everything. Expect nothing to be given. Try to walk in someone else’s shoes. In all you do, do so with integrity.”
“Young coaches and players should have tremendous gratitude and appreciation for Pat’s work ethic, her lifelong dedication and her influence on women’s sports,” Ladner said. “Without Pat, none of us may have had the vast opportunities we have today with scholarships, journalism/broadcasting, administrators, female head coaches, and the list goes on and on. We are because of her. It started with Pat and we should never forget it.”
“Coach Summitt not only wanted Tennessee to be successful but the game of women’s basketball as well,” Gillom-Granderson said. “What she did helped elevate all of us. She embraced excellence and people who exhibited excellence.”
The way Pat Head Summitt approached and lived her last years was extraordinary, Ross pointed out, as well as their friendship through the years.
“Look at how Pat handled the greatest adversity in her life – a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s at the apex of her historic career,” Ross said. “She did so honestly, with a gameplan, as a fierce competitor and with integrity. Exactly the way she moved through her coaching career, as the greatest coach in women’s basketball.
“Pat meant many things to me,” Ross continued. “Adversary, competitor, role model, but mostly beach neighbor and friend. November through March we competed in the SEC. Most of the other months we fought for recruits, but there was a little window which we spent in Florida on (state road) 30A doing beach things. Those were great times…a cold drink, toes in the sand, lots of laughs, opinions on issues of the game and some really good food. Pat was a great cook and enjoyed entertaining. I really miss those days. I miss her.”Ole Miss women’s basketball will celebrate Coach Summitt’s legacy at its annual We Back Pat game against Texas on Sunday, Jan. 26 at 2:00 p.m. CT.

Texas A&M vs Ole Miss Odds, Picks, Predictions — 1/22
The Texas A&M Aggies take on the Ole Miss Rebels in Oxford, MS. Tip-off is set for 9 p.m. ET on ESPN2.
Ole Miss is favored by 3 points on the spread with a moneyline of -160. The total is set at 141.5 points.
Here are my Texas A&M vs. Ole Miss predictions and college basketball picks for January 22, 2025.
Texas A&M vs Ole Miss Prediction
My Pick: Ole Miss -3.5 (Play to -4)
My Texas A&M vs Ole Miss best bet is on the Rebels spread, with the best odds currently available at DraftKings. For all of your college basketball bets, be sure to find the best lines by using our live NCAAB odds page.
Texas A&M vs Ole Miss Odds, Lines
- Texas A&M vs Ole Miss spread: Ole Miss -3
- Texas A&M vs Ole Miss over/under: 141.5 points
- Texas A&M vs Ole Miss moneyline: Ole Miss -160, Texas A&M +135
- Texas A&M vs Ole Miss best bet: Ole Miss -3.5 (Play to -4)
My Texas A&M vs Ole Miss NCAAB Betting Preview
Welcome back, Wade! Wade Taylor IV returned and scored 15 points in 24 minutes in the Aggies’ win on Saturday over LSU. He represents the most reliable scoring option on Texas A&M’s roster and forms a strong duo next to Zhuric Phelps.
Taylor and Phelps combine for over 31 points per game and are the lone players on the roster averaging double-digit points.
We’ll see if somebody else can step up and help the stars out in hostile territory.
In general, Texas A&M’s offense is fairly unimpressive, ranking 39th in KenPom’s offensive efficiency while shooting 50% from 2 and 30% from 3.
Those numbers don’t typically suggest a top-40 offense in the sport, but the Aggies create countless second chances on the offensive glass. They boast the best offensive rebounding rate in the country at 42%.
However, relying on offensive rebounds can lead to ebbs-and-flows offensively based on the opponent.
I just don’t know how much faith I have in the Aggies’ offense. Having to rely on offensive rebounds can work, and it may work well in this one, but the lack of shot-making can sting Texas A&M.
Where Buzz Williams’ team holds the advantage is on the defensive end. Very few teams put forth the type of defensive pressure the Aggies do, as they rank 11th in KenPom’s defensive efficiency with a dazzling 21.8% turnover rate.
If you back a team who turns the ball over versus A&M, good luck.
Thankfully, Ole Miss’ minuscule 13.3% turnover rate can counteract A&M’s pressure defense. Scoring against this defense is tough either way, but avoiding careless turnovers is the biggest key.
The key to the outstanding turnover rate is the pair of point guards, Jaylen Murray and Sean Pedulla. Very few teams have a better pair of true point guards than the Rebels, as the two combine for over seven assists and three turnovers per game.
Pedulla is the team’s leading scorer at 14 points per game, while shooting 38% from 3. Murray is second in scoring and shoots 40% from 3.
Similar to their opponents, the Rebels feast on turnovers. That shouldn’t come as a surprise if you look at the coaching staff — Chris Beard is at the controls and Mark Adams keeps the defense in sync.
Thanks to their tutelage, Ole Miss ranks 13th in defensive efficiency with a 22.8% turnover rate. The positive is Texas A&M is less careful with the ball, posting a 17% offensive turnover rate, so Ole Miss has a great chance to win the turnover battle.
The Rebels also have an advantage in the shooting department. They convert on 35% of their shots from downtown, with Murray, Pedulla and forward Jaemyn Brakefield leading the attack.
Any shooting the Rebels get from the wing corps of Dre Davis, Matthew Murrell and Davon Barnes is a bonus.
Murrell is the one I think can shoot it better. He hit a monster 3 to push Mississippi State to overtime and is sitting around 32% from deep, so we’ll see if he turns it around.
My lone concern about Ole Miss is on the glass. I love every part of this battle from a schematic standpoint, except for the Rebels’ poor rebounding numbers. They won’t win the glass battle, but they have to ensure they don’t get dominated — like the Aggies do against many teams.
Texas A&M vs. Ole Miss Betting Analysis
I like the spot for the Rebels. They’re coming off a week in which they easily could’ve gone 1-1 in tough road games, but they managed to split the pair against Alabama and Mississippi State.
Now heading back to Oxford, the Rebels will look to shake off any residual anger from the overtime loss, and Texas A&M will be the recipients.
Texas A&M vs Ole Miss Odds, Picks, Predictions — 1/22The Texas A&M Aggies will face off against the Ole Miss Rebels in an exciting SEC matchup on January 22nd. Both teams are looking to bounce back from recent losses and secure a much-needed win.
According to the latest odds, Texas A&M is a slight favorite in this matchup. The Aggies have shown flashes of potential this season, but inconsistency has plagued them at times. On the other hand, Ole Miss has been a solid team this season, with a strong defense and efficient offense.
In terms of picks and predictions, this game could go either way. Texas A&M will need to rely on their defense to slow down Ole Miss’s scoring, while the Rebels will need to contain the Aggies’ talented offense.
Ultimately, I predict that Texas A&M will come out on top in a close game. Look for the Aggies to pull away in the second half and secure a much-needed victory.

OXFORD — Figuratively and literally, Ole Miss basketball is looking to rebound against Texas A&M.
The No. 16 Rebels (15-3, 4-1) host No. 13 Texas A&M (14-4, 3-2) on Wednesday (8 p.m., ESPN2).
Coach Chris Beard’s team is coming off its first conference defeat, losing to Mississippi State 84-81. In that game, the Rebels were outrebounded 51-29. Losing the rebounding battle, which has been a concern of Beard’s since early in the season, has been a theme in Ole Miss’ losses.
Texas A&M has the roster to make the interior battle a challenge for Ole Miss. The Aggies are No. 3 in the SEC in rebounds per game (41.4); Ole Miss is No. 15 in the conference at 34.8.
Zhuric Phelps (15.6) and Wade Taylor (15.4) lead Texas A&M in scoring average. Both team defenses have started strong. Ole Miss has the No. 4 scoring defense in the SEC (65.7), just edging Texas A&M, which has allowed 65.8 points per game.
Ole Miss vs Texas A&M prediction, picks
Ole Miss 72, Texas A&M 68: Ole Miss played one of its worst first halves of the season against Mississippi State, getting down 11-0 in a flash. Yet the Rebels still almost won. If they can be competitive in rebounding, which starts with forward Malik Dia, they have a good chance to get back to their winning ways.

Why Quinshon Judkins transferred from Ole Miss to Ohio State: What to know
Ohio State football running back Quinshon Judkins has had a fine year in Columbus after transferring from Ole Miss.
Judkins, a junior, has shared carries and the top back role with TreVeyon Henderson, and each should expect to hear his name called in April’s NFL draft as soon as Day 2.
Judkins, from Pike Road, Alabama, will be a factor in Monday’s College Football Playoff national championship game between the Buckeyes and Notre Dame in Atlanta.
Here’s a look at Judkins’ Ole Miss career and why he transferred:
Quinshon Judkins’ career at Ole Miss
Judkins was an instant impact player at Ole Miss as a true freshman in 2022, compiling seven 100-yard rushing games, including a season-high 214 yards and a touchdown against Arkansas. His 1,567 yards (with 16 touchdowns) were the second-most in SEC history by a freshman, trailing only Herschel Walker.
As a sophomore, Judkins’ usage continued to be heavy, though most defenses made it a point to plan against the Rebels’ rushing attack. Still, he rushed for 1,158 yards and 15 touchdowns, with all six 100-yard rushing games against power competition as Ole Miss won 11 games.
Why did Quinshon Judkins transfer from Ole Miss to Ohio State?
Things worked quickly following Ole Miss’ Peach Bowl win over Penn State on Dec. 30, 2023.
On Jan. 4, 2024, Judkins entered the transfer portal, the same day Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin tweeted a photo of a shark with the caption “Catch and release.” Judkins committed to Ohio State on Jan. 8, and Kiffin tweeted his appreciation of Judkins.
Three weeks later, Judkins dispelled rumors of an NIL-motivated transfer to OSU. “A lot of people won’t be happy when you make a decision for yourself,” he said in his introductory media availability on Jan. 30.
The Buckeyes’ roster this season has been a talented mix of transfers and players who have played only for Ohio State. QB Will Howard (Kansas State), DB Caleb Downs (Alabama) and Judkins all have starred, as have Henderson, senior defensive end Jack Sawyer and true freshman wide receiver Jeremiah Smith.
Meanwhile, Ole Miss struggled to find a true RB1 in 2024. Henry Parrish Jr. and Ulysses Bentley IV split carries and combined for just under 1,100 yards.

Judkins and Henderson have shared the RB1 duties almost exactly 50%; Judkins has more carries than Henderson, but Henderson enters the national championship game with seven more rushing yards (967 to 960) this season.
The hot hand has gotten the attention in big games, and usually one of the two step up. In the regular-season loss to Oregon, Henderson had 87 rushing yards on 10 carries. Judkins had a team-high 95 rushing yards against Penn State. Henderson had 68 rushing yards and a key touchdown to take the lead before halftime against Indiana.
In the CFP, Judkins has recorded more carries than Henderson, but both have been major contributors. Judkins had two touchdown runs in the semifinal win over Texas, and Henderson’s 75-yard touchdown reception on a screen was key for the Buckeyes before halftime against the Longhorns.
Each will need to make an impact against a Notre Dame defense that allowed less than 70 rushing yards against Indiana and Georgia but gave up 204 to Penn State.

Quinshon Judkins, a highly touted running back recruit out of Georgia, made headlines recently when he announced his decision to transfer from Ole Miss to Ohio State. Many fans and analysts were left wondering why Judkins made this move, and what it means for both programs. Here’s what you need to know about the transfer:1. Playing Time: One of the main reasons for Judkins’ transfer was likely the opportunity for more playing time at Ohio State. With a crowded backfield at Ole Miss, including star running back Jerrion Ealy, Judkins may have seen a clearer path to playing time with the Buckeyes.
2. Coaching Change: Another factor that may have influenced Judkins’ decision is the recent coaching change at Ole Miss. With Lane Kiffin leaving for USC, Judkins may have felt more comfortable transferring to a program with more stability and a proven track record of success.
3. Ohio State’s Tradition: Ohio State has a long history of success in college football, and Judkins may have been drawn to the opportunity to play for a program with a winning tradition and a chance to compete for a national championship.
4. Personal Reasons: It’s also possible that there were personal reasons behind Judkins’ decision to transfer, such as wanting to be closer to home or feeling more comfortable in a different environment.
Overall, Judkins’ transfer to Ohio State is a significant move that could have a big impact on both programs. Keep an eye on how he performs with the Buckeyes and how his decision shapes the future of both teams.
