Brandon Saad agrees to one-year deal with Golden Knights
The veteran forward agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.5 million with the Vegas Golden Knights for the remainder of the season.
The 32-year-old and Blues agreed to mutually terminate the remainder of his contract, making him a free agent and able to sign with any team in the NHL.
The decision led to him forgoing roughly $5.4 million to become a free agent rather than report to the minors after being placed on waivers.
Saad’s struggles this season have been noted as he’s been held without a goal in 40 of his 43 games this season and has a total of 16 points.
The Pittsburgh native will be looking to regain his prior form where he scored 26 goals last year. He also has two Stanley Cup rings with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2013 and 2015.
Prior to signing with the Golden Knights, Saad had been linked to the Edmonton Oilers and Toronto Maple Leafs, among others.

VEGAS (January 31, 2025) – Vegas Golden Knights General Manager Kelly McCrimmon announced today, January 31, that the team has signed forward Brandon Saad to a one-year contract for the remainder of the 2024-25 NHL season worth an average annual value of $1,500,000.
Saad, 32, has appeared in 906 NHL games in his career, most recently with the St. Louis Blues where he signed as a free agent ahead of the 2021-22 campaign. The forward scored 26 goals last season while playing in each of the Blues’ 82 games and has collected a total of 515 points (260 G, 255 A) with a +37 rating across 13 seasons spent in St. Louis, Colorado, Columbus, and Chicago. Saad has scored at least 20 goals in seven seasons and has skated in over 70 games nine times in his career. Since his rookie year with the Blackhawks in 2012-13, the native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, ranks third among all American-born skaters in games played during the regular season, while his 260 goals rank 10th.
Saad brings a wealth of additional experience in the postseason, where he won the Stanley Cup twice (2013, 2015) during his seven seasons with the Blackhawks. The 6-1 forward has seen action in 103 games during the Stanley Cup Playoffs while producing 55 points (27 G, 28 A) and a +17 rating while on the ice. Saad’s eight goals during Chicago’s run to the Cup in 2015 finished as the third-highest total among his club.
Chicago drafted Saad in the second round (43rd overall) of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. Prior to turning pro, the forward spent two seasons in the Ontario Hockey League with the Saginaw Spirit and one year in the USA Hockey National Team Development Program.

The Detroit Tigers have signed right-handed reliever Tommy Kahnle to a one-year contract Wednesday, fortifying a bullpen that was at the forefront of the team’s surge to a postseason spot last year.
The deal is for $7.75 million, sources told ESPN.
Kahnle, 35, is coming off a strong season with the New York Yankees in which he posted a 2.11 ERA in 42⅔ innings. Over the past two seasons, Kahnle has a 2.38 ERA, the 11th best in MLB among pitchers with at least 80 innings.
In Kahnle, the Tigers add a reliever who pitches backward more than anyone in baseball. Last season, Kahnle threw his changeup 73.1% of the time — nearly 20 percentage points higher than any other pitcher. At one point in the 2024 postseason, Kahnle threw 61 consecutive changeups.
When Kahnle is healthy — an issue in past seasons — the pitch is a devastating complement to a 94 mph fastball and a show-me slider. Kahnle struck out 46 against 19 walks in 2024 while allowing five home runs. Over his 10-year career, Kahnle is 10-14 with a 3.47 ERA and 452 strikeouts, 173 walks and 40 home runs allowed in 373⅔ innings.
None of Detroit’s deep relief core relies heavily on a changeup, giving manager A.J. Hinch a solid complementary arm as he aims to piece together games. With injuries hampering their rotation last fall, Hinch relied heavily on a bullpen that threw a major-league-high 141⅔ innings in September and was third in baseball with a 2.41 ERA.
The Tigers, who on Aug. 10 were 55-63, surged to a 33-13 finish and ousted American League West champion Houston before falling to AL Central rival Cleveland in the division series.
Kahnle’s signing continued an active period for relief pitchers, with the Los Angeles Dodgers signing right-hander Kirby Yates to a one-year, $13 million contract and right-hander Ryne Stanek agreeing to a one-year, $4.5 million deal with the New York Mets.
Plenty of solid relief options remain on the market, including right-handers Carlos Estevez, Kenley Jansen, David Robertson, Kyle Finnegan and Adam Ottavino, and left-handers Tim Hill, Brooks Raley, Andrew Chafin, Jalen Beeks and Colin Poche.

Kirby Yates Signs One-Year Deal With Dodgers
Kirby Yates has passed his physical and agreed to a one-year deal with the Dodgers, reports Mark Feinsand of MLB.com. It’s a $13MM guarantee with a $1MM bonus that Yates would unlock by reaching 55 appearances, reports ESPN’s Jeff Passan. That takes the form of $500K bonuses at 50 and 55 appearances, according to Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic. Bob Nightengale of USA Today first reported last week that the veteran reliever had a “tentative agreement” with Los Angeles.
Yates officially becomes the latest big acquisition in a huge Dodgers offseason. He’s their second marquee pickup in the late inning. Los Angeles signed Tanner Scott to a four-year, $72MM pact with deferrals not long before agreeing to terms with Yates. The Dodgers had also retained Blake Treinen on a two-year deal earlier in the winter. They’ll join Michael Kopech, Evan Phillips and Alex Vesia in what should be one of the game’s best relief groups.
Scott and Yates were arguably the two best free agent relievers, at least for the upcoming season. The 37-year-old Yates (38 in March) was never going to match the three-year terms for Jeff Hoffman and Clay Holmes, but he’s coming off the best platform season in the relief class. He turned in a sterling 1.17 earned run average while striking out nearly 36% of batters faced for the Rangers. Yates went 33-34 on save opportunities while firing 61 2/3 innings — the second-highest workload of his career.
Emmanuel Clase was the only reliever in MLB who was definitively better. Yates finished second behind Clase in ERA among relievers with 50+ innings. He was seventh in strikeout percentage. Yates placed in the top 25 in swinging strike rate (15.2%). Opponents had no success against either his 93 MPH fastball or his mid-80s splitter.

The Cincinnati Reds, continuing to add to new manager Terry Francona’s roster, have reached agreement on a one-year, $5 million contract with free-agent outfielder Austin Hays, according to a source briefed on the discussions.
The deal, which is pending a physical, includes $1 million in incentives and marks the latest veteran addition to the Reds, who earlier this offseason signed free-agent reliever Brent Suter and traded for right-hander Brady Singer, catcher Jose Trevino and second baseman Gavin Lux.
Hays’ exact role with the Reds is to be determined. After platooning for the first part of last season with the Baltimore Orioles, he was seeking more regular playing time and a one-year deal that would help him reestablish his value.
Hays, 29, was diagnosed with a kidney infection last September. His test results indicated he had been ill for an extended period, perhaps the majority of the time he spent with the Philadelphia Phillies after they acquired him on July 26 from the Orioles for reliever Seranthony Domínguez and outfielder Cristian Pache.
The infection, Hays said, was “the hardest thing I’ve ever gone through.” His symptoms included heaviness in his legs, pain in his lower back and floaters in his eyes, as well as brain fog that would disrupt conversations with his wife and teammates, causing him to forget what he was talking about, leaving him unable to respond.
In his 22 games with the Phillies, Hays performed below league average, batting .256 with a .672 OPS. The Phillies ultimately non-tendered him rather than pay him a projected $6.4 million in arbitration. But after that decision, Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said, “I don’t think we saw the true guy.”
Prior to last season, Hays was an above-average offensive player with a career .751 OPS, including a .779 mark against left-handed pitching. Dombrowski said after the trade that the Phillies had tried to acquire him at each of the previous two deadlines. Phillies manager Rob Thomson said, “I expect him, wherever he ends up, to have a much better year than certainly he had with us.”

PITTSBURGH — Adam Frazier is heading back to the Pittsburgh Pirates, according to multiple reports.
The club has agreed to terms with the veteran second baseman/outfielder on a one-year deal worth $1.525 million, per the reports. The deal is pending Frazier passing a physical.
The 33-year-old Frazier spent the first five-plus seasons of his career with the Pirates from 2016-21. He hit .283 with 39 homers and 204 RBIs in 608 games with Pittsburgh. Frazier made the All-Star Game in 2021 before being traded to the San Diego Padres.
Frazier has bounced around recently, playing for the Seattle Mariners in 2022, Baltimore Orioles in 2023 and Kansas City Royals last season. Frazier hit .202 in 104 games with the Royals in 2024.
The deal gives the Pirates a versatile option who can play a corner outfield spot or second. Pittsburgh could have an immediate opening in right field after opting not to retain Bryan De La Cruz.

MLB news: Orioles sign outfielder Dylan Carlson to one-year contract
The Orioles added another player to their offseason free agent haul on Monday afternoon, who like every other guy they have signed adds no particular excitement for the coming season. The team scooped everyone with its announcement that they have signed outfielder Dylan Carlson to a one-year contract for the 2025 season. MLB Network’s Jon Heyman reports that it’s a $975,000 guarantee on the signing.
Carlson is a 26-year-old switch-hitter who has a decent amount of MLB-level experience at all three outfield positions. The former late-first round pick by the Cardinals from 2016 eventually worked his way into having top-20 prospect stock prior to the 2021 season. Then 22, the outfielder batted .266/.343/.437 over 149 games in his rookie season, finishing third in NL Rookie of the Year voting for a 3.1 win campaign.
The problem for Carlson is that he never lived up to even that modest performance at the plate after that, following up with a slightly below league average batting in his sophomore season and getting worse each year. The Cardinals put him out in the figurative doghouse for a while, finally dumping him onto the Rays in the middle of last season in a small trade in which St. Louis took on former Orioles reliever Shawn Armstrong, who was likewise pretty bad in 2024.
There is nothing nice to say about the .515 OPS that Carlson had in 59 games with St. Louis last year. His .615 OPS in 37 games with the Rays would also make him unplayable even as a fourth outfielder and bench bat, which is presumably the role that the Orioles have in mind for him. It seems that Mike Elias and company feel that Carlson has enough of a chance to fit in that role to be worth the opportunity cost of the roster spot as well as the risk that they’ll play him for a while and he could continue to stink.
Across his big league batting, Carlson has been a substantially better batter when facing left-handed pitching. That clarifies the idea of a bench bat. He might pinch hit for Cedric Mullins or Colton Cowser in a crucial late-inning situation against a lefty reliever, and he could be trusted to stand in left or center field for an inning or two afterwards. If those two lefty batters are due for a day of rest, Carlson’s presence might allow them to receive it against a tougher lefty starting pitcher.
Or Carlson might just be depth for the minor leagues. The outfielder still has three minor league option years remaining. That means that he could begin the season at Triple-A Norfolk, there only in case of someone ahead of him getting hurt or Carlson re-discovering his 2021 form so much that the Orioles have to find a place for him on the MLB roster. Even after three straight winning seasons, the O’s have not moved past “try to reclaim a former top prospect” mode – just look at another fringe outfielder in the mix, Daz Cameron.
The Orioles had a full 40-man roster upon signing Carlson, so the move necessitated a corresponding roster action. The team designated infielder Jacob Amaya for assignment. The Orioles are taking a flier on a high-upside rebound candidate, agreeing with outfielder Dylan Carlson on a one-year Major League contract for 2025, the team announced Monday.
A former first-round Draft pick, Carlson was considered a five-tool talent when he made his MLB debut as a 21-year-old with the 2020 Cardinals. He began to fulfill all of his promise in 2021, his first full season in the big leagues, by registering 18 home runs, a 115 OPS+ and 3.1 bWAR over 149 games. He was named a National League Rookie of the Year finalist following the season.
However, Carlson has been unable to replicate that initial success over the past three seasons. From 2022-24, he produced a .225/.309/.341 slash line across 1,008 plate appearances. Carlson has also dealt with his fair share of injuries, which has caused him to play in fewer than 100 games in each of the previous two seasons.
After spending last offseason recovering from season-ending left ankle surgery, Carlson sustained a left shoulder injury late in Spring Training and didn’t appear in a 2024 regular-season game until May. After batting .198 over 121 homerless at-bats, Carlson was shipped to the Rays ahead of the Trade Deadline. The change of scenery didn’t lead to much better results for Carlson, who produced a .219/.299/.316 slash line with three homers and a 28.3% strikeout rate in 127 plate appearances with Tampa Bay. He was non-tendered in November.
Carlson, entering his age-26 season, is a switch-hitter who has had much more success throughout his career against left-handed pitchers (.285 average, .792 OPS) than righties (.219 average, .655 OPS). After a short stint in the KHL, Tony DeAngelo is coming back to the NHL.
The 29-year-old defenceman signed a one-year contract for the remainder of the 2024-25 season with the New York Islanders on Friday, the team announced.
Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravelli reported that the deal is for a prorated league minimum of $775,000 and that DeAngelo will have to be placed on waivers Friday because he played in Russia.
Earlier this month, DeAngelo had his contract terminated by SKA Saint Petersburg so he could return home for family reasons. He led the team in assists, with 26, and in scoring among all defencemen with 32 points in just 34 games.
DeAngelo suited up for 371 career NHL games with the Arizona Coyotes, New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers and, most recently, the Carolina Hurricanes, before signing a one-year contract to head to Russia at the conclusion of the 2023-24 season.
He has 48 goals and 162 assists during his NHL career.
DeAngelo is a former 19th-overall draft pick by Tampa Bay who gained notoriety for a physical altercation on Jan. 30, 2021, with then-teammate Alexandar Georgiev of the New York Rangers, an incident he elaborated on in August on Morning Cuppa Hockey podcast on Daily Faceoff. The incident prompted the Rangers to place DeAngelo on unconditional waivers and eventually buy him out, despite having played just six games of that season, which had been delayed due to the pandemic.
The New York Islanders have bolstered their defensive corps by signing Tony DeAngelo to a one-year deal.
