  • Ontario premier ‘ripping up contract’ with Musk’s Starlink in response to tariffs

The leader of Canada’s most populous province of Ontario says he’s ripping up a contract with Elon Musk’s Starlink internet services in response to Donald Trump’s sweeping tariffs on Canada, as well as banning American companies from provincial contracts

TORONTO — The leader of Canada’s most populous province of Ontario said Monday he’s ripping up a contract with Elon Musk’s Starlink internet services in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s sweeping tariffs on Canada.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who said he is also banning American companies from provincial contracts, signed a $100-million Canadian (US$68 million) with Musk’s company in November to deliver high-speed internet to remote residents in rural and northern Ontario.

“We’ll be ripping up the province’s contract with Starlink. Ontario won’t do business with people hellbent on destroying our economy,” Ford said in a post on X.

Ford said starting Tuesday and until U.S. tariffs are removed, Ontario will ban American companies from provincial contracts.

“Canada didn’t start this fight with the U.S., but you better believe we’re ready to win it,” said Ford, who called an election for his province last week.

In a bold move, Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced today that he will be “ripping up” the contract with Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite internet service in response to new tariffs imposed on Canadian exports.

The decision comes as a response to the recent announcement by the United States to impose tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum products, a move that has sparked outrage and concern among Canadian politicians and industry leaders.

Premier Ford stated that the tariffs are “unfair and unjust” and that he will not stand idly by while Ontario businesses and workers are harmed by these punitive measures. He also emphasized that he will not allow Musk’s company to profit off the backs of hardworking Ontarians while their livelihoods are threatened by the tariffs.

The decision to terminate the contract with Starlink is sure to have far-reaching consequences, as the satellite internet service was seen as a potential solution to rural connectivity issues in the province. However, Premier Ford remains steadfast in his commitment to defending Ontario’s interests and standing up to what he sees as unjust trade practices.

This move is just the latest in a series of aggressive actions taken by the Ontario government in response to the tariffs, and it is unclear what the future holds for the province’s relationship with Musk’s company. Only time will tell how this decision will impact Ontario’s internet infrastructure and the broader economic implications of the tariffs.

  • Lake-effect snow squalls to impact post-holiday travels in Ontario

Southern Ontario will clear up Wednesday evening, with lake-effect snow continuing for the snowbelt regions. Snow will begin Wednesday morning in the Ottawa region, and become heavy through the day. By then end of the day, folks in the Ottawa region could see around 5 cm of snow.

The lake-effect flurries will affect the snowbelt regions on Thursday. Difficult travel can be expected along the 400 highway in the north, especially around Barrie and Orillia. Some of the impacted areas could see upwards of 40+ cm of snow.

Ontario forecast precipitation Thursday afternoon, lake-effect snow squalls - Jan. 1, 2025

Environment and Climate Change Canada issued snow squall watches and warnings for the Barrie area and Lake Huron shores, as well as for the Sault Ste. Marie area.

“Snow squalls cause weather conditions to vary considerably; changes from clear skies to heavy snow within just a few kilometres are common,” the agency states in their warning. “Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve.”

A cold polar airmass will move into Ontario and stick around through the beginning of January, fuelling the multi-day lake effect snow.

Southern Ontario forecast snow totals, snow squalls - Jan. 1, 2025

The snow will stick around through Friday, meandering south in Goderich, London and Woodstock.

As we enter the final stretch of the holiday season, travelers in Ontario should be prepared for potentially treacherous conditions as lake-effect snow squalls are forecasted to impact the region. These intense bands of snow, caused by cold air passing over the warmer waters of the Great Lakes, can bring sudden and heavy snowfall, greatly reducing visibility and creating hazardous driving conditions.

If you are planning to travel in the coming days, especially in areas near the Great Lakes such as Toronto, Hamilton, and Niagara Falls, it is important to stay updated on weather forecasts and road conditions. Consider adjusting your travel plans if necessary to avoid driving during peak squall activity.

Remember to drive cautiously, increase following distances, and allow extra time for your journey. Make sure your vehicle is equipped with winter tires and emergency supplies, such as a flashlight, extra blankets, and non-perishable snacks.

Stay safe and stay informed as you navigate through the winter wonderland of Ontario this holiday season.

Trillium Health Partners, which oversees operations at the hospital, said both Samreen and baby are healthy and well as they posed for a picture with Mahmood, Huzaifa’s father.

Huzaifa is one of just a few New Year’s Day newborns in Ontario.

In Toronto, baby Harper was born just five minutes after the New Year’s Eve countdown ended, to parents Chris and Machaela O’Heir. Harper weighs seven pounds and 14 ounces.

Southlake Health in Newmarket, Ont. announced Jamie-Lynne was born just under an hour later at 12:55 a.m. They said the baby was the first to be born in a York Region hospital in 2025 and that her mother, Sarah, is doing well.

North of the city, in Barrie, Jenelle Lyman said she hoped for a Jan. 1 baby, and the first-time parent got her wish shortly after midnight.

“I tried really hard. I didn’t want a December 31 baby,” she said after delivering her son, Scottie, alongside partner Quinn Steele at the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre.

The five-pound bundle of joy arrived at 1:17 a.m.

Navethra Goviandarasu and Rathnagiri Athiannan welcomed their baby girl at 1:56 a.m. at Oshawa Hospital, Lakeridge Health said in a news release, noting that the baby is the first to be born in Durham Region this year. The parents have not yet decided on their daughter’s name, they said.

At 2:45 a.m., parents Taranpreet and Vijayvir met their baby, Anhad, for the first time at Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital. In a new release, the hospital’s operator, Mackenzie Health said the newborn weighs six pounds and two ounces.

Lennox was born at 3:33 a.m., Oak Valley Health said in a news release. The 6.7-pound baby was delivered at Markham Stouffville Hospital and the health-care network said Lennox’s parents are “overjoyed.”

Hours later, at 6:01 a.m., Awa Sinyan and Amadou Sanneh said hello to their baby girl in Brampton. The newborn weighed in at seven-pounds and 3.5-ounces and is the younger sibling of Amira and Yayya.

In hospitals from Toronto to Ottawa to Thunder Bay, the sound of newborn cries filled the maternity wards as parents welcomed their new arrivals. From tiny fingers and toes to sweet little cries, these babies brought joy and hope for the year ahead.

Parents spoke of their gratitude for the skilled doctors and nurses who helped bring their babies into the world safely. For many families, the birth of a New Year’s Day baby was a special and unforgettable moment.

  • Much of Southern Ontario under significant rainfall warning, Environment Canada says

Much of Southern Ontario under significant rainfall warning, Environment Canada says

Environment Canada has issued significant rainfall warnings across much of Southern Ontario, including Toronto and its surrounding areas.

The agency is forecasting up to 35 millimetres of rain in Toronto, Hamilton, Kitchener and other regions, and says London and Windsor could get up to 50 millimetres of rain.

The rain began Sunday morning and was expected to be heavy at times before eventually tapering off later in the day.

Fog advisories are also in effect in Ottawa, Peterborough, Kenora and other regions.

Environment Canada is urging people to stay away from washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts and keep children and pets away from creeks and river banks.

The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority says the combination of rainfall, above-freezing temperatures, frozen ground, ice and snow melt could create dangerous conditions near rivers or other water bodies.

Canada’s Wonderland, a popular amusement park north of Toronto that’s currently hosting Winter Fest activities, says it will be closed Sunday due to inclement weather.

Attention Southern Ontario residents! Environment Canada has issued a significant rainfall warning for much of the region. This means that heavy rain is expected to fall over the next few days, potentially causing flooding and hazardous conditions on the roads.

It is important to stay informed and be prepared for the inclement weather. Make sure to check local weather updates and advisories regularly, and avoid unnecessary travel if possible. Keep an eye on water levels in rivers and streams near your area, and be ready to take action if flooding occurs.

Remember to drive cautiously and watch out for pooling water on the roads. If you encounter a flooded area, do not attempt to drive through it as it may be deeper than it appears.

Stay safe and dry, Southern Ontario! Let’s all be vigilant and prepared during this period of heavy rainfall. #RainfallWarning #EnvironmentCanada #SouthernOntario #StaySafe

Yesterday, residents of Quebec and Ontario were left shaken by a 4.1-magnitude earthquake that struck the region. The quake, which occurred around 7:30 pm local time, was felt by many people in the area, causing buildings to sway and objects to fall off shelves.

While earthquakes are relatively rare in this part of Canada, yesterday’s event serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of seismic activity. Fortunately, there have been no reports of major damage or injuries resulting from the quake.

As residents in Quebec and Ontario recover from the shock of the earthquake, it is important to stay informed and prepared for any future seismic events. Remember to have an emergency kit ready, know what to do in the event of an earthquake, and stay connected with local authorities for updates and guidance.

Our thoughts are with those affected by the earthquake, and we hope that everyone stays safe and vigilant in the days ahead.
