Novak Djokovic falls to Reilly Opelka in Brisbane quarterfinals
BRISBANE, Australia — Novak Djokovic was beaten 7-6 (6), 6-3 by big-serving Reilly Opelka in the Brisbane International quarterfinals on Friday.
Opelka served 16 aces — including one to finish off each set — to earn one of the biggest wins of the American’s career.
“I was just focused on my spots,” Opelka said. “If I hit them, it’s hard to get them back. If there’s anyone that can, it’s him.”
Djokovic, 37, was playing his first tournament of the year. The 24-time Grand Slam champion is preparing for the Australian Open, which starts on Jan. 12 and which he has won 10 times.
“We have nothing to lose coming in against him. He’s the greatest player ever,” Opelka added. “So you end up playing more free and you take a lot more risk. If you play your normal level or even above a normal level, he’s going to win every time. So it’s tough in his position because he gets guys that are good players that they roll the dice. And on a on a day like this when a lot of things go my way, that’s how it works out.”
New coach Andy Murray will join Djokovic in Melbourne.
Opelka achieved a career-high ranking of No. 17 in Feb. 2022 before undergoing hip surgery later that year to remove a benign tumor. He’s now No. 293.
“It was tough. A lot of uncertainty, a lot of doubt,” Opelka said.
In the semifinals, Opelka will face Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, who beat Jakub Mensik 7-5, 7-6 (5). The other semifinal will feature Jiri Lehecka against Grigor Dimitrov.
Lehecka beat Nicolas Jarry 6-4, 6-4, and Dimitrov advanced when Jordan Thompson retired while Dimitrov was ahead 6-1, 2-1.
In a shocking upset, Novak Djokovic has been knocked out of the Brisbane International quarterfinals by American player Reilly Opelka. The world number one and defending champion was unable to handle Opelka’s powerful serves and aggressive play, ultimately falling in straight sets.Opelka, known for his booming serve and towering height, proved to be a formidable opponent for Djokovic. The Serbian struggled to find his rhythm and was unable to break Opelka’s serve throughout the match.
Despite his loss, Djokovic remains optimistic and focused on the upcoming Australian Open. He has a successful track record at the Grand Slam tournament and will be looking to bounce back from this early exit in Brisbane.
Opelka, on the other hand, will be riding high on this victory and looking to continue his impressive run in the tournament. The American will face a tough opponent in the semifinals, but his confidence and powerful game could see him through to the final.

Novak Djokovic and six other seeded players have crashed out in Brisbane, leaving only No. 2 Grigor Dimitrov in the semifinals. Dimitrov faces Jiri Lehecka on Saturday, while Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard goes up against Reilly Opelka.
(PR) Reilly Opelka vs. Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard
It could be biggest-serving matchup of the entire year when Mpetshi Perricard and Opelka collide in a surprising semifinal showdown at the Brisbane International on Saturday. A red-hot Mpetshi Perricard’s presence is no surprise, but no one could have expected a resurgent Opelka to make it this far–at least considering his draw. The 27-year-old American stunned Novak Djokovic in straight sets on Friday, building on previous wins over Federico Agustin Gomez and Matteo Arnaldi.Mpetshi Perricard has been on fire dating back to last fall, when he captured an ATP 500 title on the indoor hard courts of Basel. The 21-year-old Frenchman is picking up right where left off, rolling through tough Brisbane tests in the form of Nick Kyrgios, Frances Tiafoe, and Jakub Mensik. Mpetshi Perricard has struck 75 aces in seven sets and has not been broken a single time. This match will almost certainly come down to nothing more than tiebreakers, but a supremely confident Mpetshi Perricard should have the edge in the pressure-packed moments.
Pick: Perricard in 2
Jiri Lehecka vs. (2) Grigor Dimitrov
Dimitrov and Lehecka will be squaring off for the fourth time in their careers on Saturday. Lehecka leads the head-to-head series 2-1; he survived a third-set tiebreaker at the 2022 Stockholm tournament and prevailed 7-6(4), 6-4 at the 2023 Monte-Carlo Masters. Dimitrov’s lone victory has come at the 2022 Australian Open via a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 decision. As the latter result suggests, Dimitrov loves playing Down Under–including in Brisbane. The 33-year-old is 26-6 lifetime at this event with two titles, and so far this week he has dismissed Yannick Hanfmann, Aleksandar Vukic, and Jordan Thompson. However, Lehecka clearly likes this matchup and is also playing great. The 23-year-old Czech lost just a single set (in a tiebreaker) while ousting Holger Rune, Yoshihito Nishioka, and Nicolas Jarry en route to the semis. An upset would hardly be surprising.
Pick: Lehecka in 3

Four quarterfinal matches will be contested on Friday at the ATP Brisbane International, with two top 10 players and some young stars all vying for a semifinal spot. As always, we here at LWOT will be offering our predictions for all four matches, but who will advance?
ATP Brisbane Quarterfinal Predictions
Nicolas Jarry vs Jiri Lehecka
Head-to-head: Lehecka 2-1 Jarry
This should be an interesting encounter between two similarly ranked players around 30th in the world ranking. Jiri Lehecka, sidelined for injury during much of 2024, has a lot of talent and power on his groundstrokes. He also won the pair’s only ATP tour-level meeting last year in similar conditions in Adelaide. The Czech has also arguably had the tougher route to reach this stage, needing to upset Holger Rune 7-5 6-3 in the first round.Nicolas Jarry must serve well and target Lehecka’s backhand, but the Czech should have enough here.
Prediction: Lehecka in 2
Embed from Getty ImagesJordan Thompson vs Grigor Dimitrov
Head-to-head: Dimitrov 2-1 Thompson
It was at this stage of the ATP Brisbane International in 2024 that Jordan Thompson defeated Rafael Nadal 5-7 7-6(6) 6-3 in a three-hour thriller. Who did the Australian play next? Grigor Dimitrov, losing to the Bulgarian in straight sets. Thompson will have the chance to take revenge here. Thompson clearly enjoys playing at this tournament, but then so does defending champion Dimitrov. The second seed is on a seven-match winning streak in Brisbane as the defending champion, and the run should continue unless Thompson can force enough of unforced errors with his consistency. That would be a suprise, but with the crowd behind him don’t be surprised to see Thompson take this one the distance.
Prediction: Dimitrov in 3
Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard vs Jakub Mensik
Head-to-head: Mpetshi Perricard 1-0 Mensik
There may not be many more exciting players to watch in 2025 than Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, especially for the fans who enjoy powerful serving. The Frenchman has looked great in Brisbane, most recently upsetting Frances Tiafoe in straight sets. Jakub Mensik also has a lot of upside, coming off a 26-20 record in 2024 (which was arguably an underperformance) with five top 20 wins. But while both ended last season in great form, it’s hard to look away past Mpetshi Perricard given the rhythm he is in on serve and the confidence he’s had in his groundstrokes. Indeed, he’s yet to lose his serve this tournament. Expect the Frenchman to win in two close sets.
Prediction: Mpetshi Perricard in 2
Embed from Getty ImagesNovak Djokovic vs Reilly Opelka
Head-to-head: first meeting
After a tough season ruined by injuries in 2024, could Reilly Opelka make a return to the top 20? The American has fired 34 aces this week in Brisbane and is coming off a good win over Matteo Arnaldi in the second round. This match will be a far tougher test. Novak Djokovic has been beaten by big servers in the past, but not very often. His consistent and accurate return will challenge Opelka, who will not be able to rely on winning as many free points with his serve. Instead, the American will have to use his forehand to attack Djokovic’s serve and be prepared to take risks. Still, it is one thing to take a risk and another entirely for it to come off.
Prediction: Djokovic in 2

The ATP Brisbane quarterfinals are heating up, with some exciting matchups on the horizon. One of the standout matches to look forward to is Novak Djokovic taking on Reilly Opelka.Novak Djokovic, the world number one, is in fine form and will be looking to continue his dominant run in Brisbane. The Serb has been in impressive form since his return from injury and will be a tough opponent for anyone.
On the other hand, Reilly Opelka, known for his powerful serve, has been playing well in Brisbane and will be a tricky opponent for Djokovic. The American has the ability to cause upsets and will be looking to take advantage of any opportunities that come his way.
In this matchup, Djokovic’s experience and all-around game should give him the edge over Opelka. The Serb’s ability to return and handle big serves will be crucial in this match, and he should be able to outclass Opelka in the rallies.
Overall, I predict that Novak Djokovic will come out on top in this quarterfinal matchup against Reilly Opelka. Djokovic’s consistency and ability to raise his game in crucial moments should see him through to the next round. Fans can expect an entertaining match between these two talented players.

Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard hit 20 aces in his second-round win against Frances Tiafoe on Thursday in Brisbane.
By Sam JacotGiovanni Mpetshi Perricard wasted little time in showing opponent Frances Tiafoe and the Brisbane International presented by Evie crowd what he was about on Thursday when he fired four aces in his opening service game against the American.
The 21-year-old’s red-hot start set the tone for the match, with Tiafoe unable to answer the Frenchman’s power. Under the Brisbane heat, Mpetshi Perricard hammered 20 aces and saved both break points he faced to earn a 6-4, 7-6(4) second-round victory.
”I was very warm from the first game,” Mpetshi Perricard said when asked about his fast start. “I didn’t see the speed of the serves but over 230kmh is very fast, so I am pleased.”
And that’s how it’s done

The World No. 31 hit 36 aces in his win against Nick Kyrgios in his opening match, also serving a game of aces, and backed that up with a confident performance against Tiafoe to improve to 6-1 against Top 20 players.
“It was a good match,” said Mpetshi Perricard, who led the Tour with an average of 19 aces per match last season. “It is never easy to play against Frances. I did well in the first set and then battled in the second. I tried to put some pressure on his second serve and it worked, so I am pleased with my performance today.”
Mpetshi Perricard is aiming to clinch his third tour-level title this week. A year ago, the Frenchman was outside the Top 200 in the PIF ATP Rankings but starts this season at No. 31, having won ATP Tour trophies in Lyon and Basel in 2024.
In a day of success for big servers, 6’11” Reilly Opelka also advanced. The American struck 25 aces according to Infosys ATP Stats en route to defeating Matteo Arnaldi 7-6(9), 7-6(4). Opelka saved one set point in the first set and converted on his third match point in the second-set tie-break to reach his first ATP Tour quarter-final since 2022 (Delray Beach).
At No. 293 in the PIF ATP Rankings, Opelka is the second-lowest ranked quarter-finalist in Brisbane history. Rafael Nadal was the lowest when he advanced to the last eight in 2024. Opelka will meet top seed Novak Djokovic or Frenchman Gael Monfils in the quarter-finals.
Earlier, #NextGenATP Czech Jakub Mensik became the fourth-youngest quarter-finalist in tournament history when he moved past Serbian lucky loser Dusan Lajovic 6-3, 6-2 in just 66 minutes.
The 19-year-old, who competed at last month’s Next Gen ATP Finals presented by PIF, leads Lajovic 2-0 in the pair’s Lexus ATP Head2Head series. Into his sixth tour-level quarter-final, Mensik will next face Mpetshi Perricard.
Gio Mpetshi Perricard impressively advanced to the quarterfinals of the Brisbane International by defeating Reilly Opelka with a stunning display of aces.
